Big Al’s View Of The World R&M Rodeo Photos I’m working on month number three on the pipeline. My experience level for the paint drying department job is climbing by the day. I’ve just about read the entire internet. I haven’t completely fallen into believing every conspiracy theory on the internet but I might actually know who killed Kennedy. Actually I had my wife bring me some J. Frank Dobie books the last time she came to visit. I have read all of them at least twice but every few year’s I’ll go back and pick one up. My favorite part of J. Frank Dobie is that he writes about places that I know first hand. The hill country, South Texas, West Texas, the Gulf coast. His stories are 75% true or as true that they can be coming from old timers that lived back then. I betcha they stretched the truth on occassion. I breezed through The Longhorns in about a week. Now I’m working on Coronado’s Children. I wanted to reread Cow People but it has mysteriously disappeared. Cow People is my favorite. If you only read one Dobie book that should be it.

My dad’s aunt was our librarian when I was in elementary school. She put me onto Dobie way back then and I ran with it. I have always been a Texas history buff and Dobie has a way of writing about Texas history that you’ve never seen in regular books. We worked seven days a week for six weeks straight this past stretch. That is a lot of days in a row. No sleeping in, no going to Whataburger for breakfast, no going to town for lunch. That was 42 days in a row of eating a sandwich for lunch. Well not exactly 42. I actually finally broke down and bought a mexican taco from the store in town and took it out to the job for lunch. I had been eating the breakfast tacos but I hadn’t gotten a lunch taco. The last week before we went home for the break I got me one. It was like eating a gold plated chocolate cake. Eat 39 sandwiches in a row and see what it tastes like for you. Since we had been working for six weeks straight they gave us five days off. How generous of them! I spent mine working on everything I owned.

It seems that in my absense everything at my house and anywhere I might need to go was broke down or not working properly. I had all of these plans to get everything on my “to do list” done while I was home. Instead I spent 5 days fixing things that weren’t broke before I left. Keep in mind that I haven’t been there for almost 3 months but somehow these things have become broken. Go figure!!! I was never so glad to come back to work as I was when I got back to Rocksprings the night before I had to report back. I need to go back to work to get over my vacation. The weather out here will make you wish you could stay out here forever. My five days in Austin County made me understand the saying, “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” Trust me, I fully understand what they mean. My first day home wasn’t so bad. We had that cold front come through during the night so it was nice and refreshing with a strong north wind. Two days later it wasn’t as refreshing and there was no wind. I was going through two shirts a day. The one thing I like about the pipeline is that everyone waves. You know from my previous writings that I’m a big waver while I’m driving. If I wave at you, I’m expecting a wave back. Rich people in Range Rovers on county roads don’t wave in Austin County but yet every laborer on the pipeline waves each time someone drives by. That’s just called being friendly in my book!!! Just being friendly, Big Al’

PRCA Rookies of the Year Announced For 2019 Rookies in each event of ProRodeo spend the year working toward winning the PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year honors. Now that the 2019 PRCA RAM World Standings have been audited by a third party and finalized, the 2019 PRCA | Resistol Rookies of the Year have been officially named for most events – but not all of them. The outcomes of the all-around rookie of the year, tiedown roping and bull riding will be determined during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Dec. 5-14. Stetson Wright, Haven Meged and Daylon Swearingen are both in contention for the allaround rookie title. Meged and Shad Mayfield are both set to compete at the Wrangler NFR in tie-down roping. The bull riding rookie race involves Wright, Swearingen and Trey Kimzey. Wright leads the allaround race in the rookie standings as well as the world standings with $182,999. The 20-year-old, Utah cowboy won $152,422 in bull riding and $71,301 in saddle bronc riding. However, $40,724 of his bull riding earnings came from Xtreme Bulls events which do not count toward the all-around standings. Although Wright didn’t make the Top 15 in saddle bronc riding, he did win the Saddle Bronc Riding Rookie of the Year title. “It means everything,” Wright said. “All my brothers and uncles won it, and I don’t feel left out now.” The saddle bronc riding rookie title is a family legacy for the Wrights. Stetson’s uncle Jesse Wright won it in 2009, followed by uncles Spencer Wright in 2012 and CoBurn Bradshaw in 2015. Stetson’s brothers Rusty and Ryder won it in 2014 and 2016, respectively. As for the all-around and bull riding rookie titles that remain up in the air, Stetson Wright is optimistic about both races. “We all made the NFR, and whoever gets it deserves it because we rode everything this year,” Stetson said. “It’s been an awesome year for all of us. I had a lead and they closed in on it, but it’s all good since there’s a lot of money to be won at the NFR.” Garrett Shadbolt is the 2019 Bareback Riding Rookie of the Year with $54,580. Dennell Henderson is the 2019 Steer Wrestling Rookie of the

Year with $47,347. Henderson, 26, put his ProRodeo dreams on hold until he was done playing basketball for Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. “I always played sports but never had time to go rodeo until now,” Henderson said. “It’s what I always wanted to do. It’s just a great feeling to wake up and do what I really love now.” Kal Fuller is the 2019 Team Roping Heading Rookie of the Year with $41,762. He had a specific moment this season that let him know he could compete.

“I’ve never been a 3 (second run) in my life, and I was 3.4,” Fuller said of his team roping win at the Kitsap Stampede in Bremerton, Wash. “That was when I knew that I could really do it, that I just had it.” Paden Bray is the 2019 Team Roping Heeling Rookie of the Year with $67,014. “Over the Fourth of July, I wasn’t in the top 50, and then we won $17,000 and hit 24th,” Bray said. “I had always looked for my name in the rookie standings, but when I looked for my name in the world standings I couldn’t find it at first because I was looking too low on the list. It’s still pretty awesome to go from not even close to almost making the Finals.” Meged leads the tie-

down roping rookie standings with $119,879. Mayfield will be trying to track him down. “I’m in a great position to come out on top of it,” said Meged, 21. “But it comes down to 10 rounds (at the Wrangler NFR), so it’s going to be a knife fight.” Cole Patterson is the 2019 Steer Roping Rookie of the Year with $38,251. The 23-year-old, Kansas cowboy will make his debut at the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping alongside his father, Rocky, at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Nov. 22-23. “If you look back at a lot of people with gold buckles, a lot of them have a rookie of the year buckle that they got before that gold buckle, so it’s a heck of an honor,” Cole Patterson said.

Karsyn Daniels UPRA’s #1 Cowgirl

JenningsRodeoPhotography.com By Krista Lucas The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo will inspire anyone who attends, and many cowboys and cowgirls remember the first time they saw the bright arena lights of Las Vegas. Karsyn Daniels vividly remembers when her parents took her to see the super bowl of rodeo even though she was just four years old. Ever since then, the McKinney, Texas cowgirl has possessed a love for the sport of rodeo. “I told them that I needed a horse and wanted to rodeo,” Daniels said. “It wasn’t long after that I got my first pony, Happy Appy, and my love for rodeo took off from there.” Daniels is now 15 years old and a 10th grader at

Just like every serious rodeo competitor, Daniels has her own daily routine she sticks to. After she finishes her schoolwork, she heads to the barn to do chores and ride. Daniels rides her barrel horses every day, either in the arena or out in the pasture, and she believes in mixing things up during the week. “I think it’s important to change up their routine to keep them from getting bored. When in the pasture I usually ride each for 30 minutes to an hour just walking and long trotting,” she said. “However, when in the arena I have a little different routine. I will lope five and five. Meaning I will lope each direction for five minutes. I will then do little drills such as counter arcs to open up their shoulders, and then I like to end their workout with backing up in perfect squares. This drill tends to get them using their hind end.” Daniels has several young horses coming up through the ranks that she is excited about, but her main mount has always been ZZ’s Jetting Muffin. Muffin has been responsible for some of Daniels’ biggest wins. “My parents bought her when I turned six, and she was only five. We have basically grown up together,” she said. “She has certainly taught me over the years how to be patient. She was some-

lots of help along the way I was able to get with her and started what has been a phenomenal barrel racing career with her.” The duo has accomplished a list of memorable wins over the years, and the list continues to grow. Daniels and Muffin won the 2017 and 2018 National Junior High School Rodeo Association barrel racing championship, five AQHA and American Quarter Horse Youth Association world titles and have qualified for the American Semi-Finals four times. Daniels has also recently added a mare named Lady Got Guys, also known as Twinkie, to the team. Twinkie has already placed at UPRA rodeos and qualified for the AQHYA finals with Daniels. Over the summer, Daniels won her favorite UPRA rodeo in Blue Ridge, Texas. “It is close to home, and lots of my friends and family came to support me this year. That was super exciting.” Now, Daniels has her sights set on the Cinch United Finals Rodeo November 21-23 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She comes into her second UFR in first place with

Cowboy Sports News Page 16 - November 2019

Six weeks ago, tie-down roper Riley Pruitt was 17th in the 2019 PRCA | RAM World Standings and had not won any rodeos during the entire season. But he’s riding high after winning the Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo in Waco. The Nebraska cowboy ended 2019 with a bang by winning the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up for $14,446, Sept. 14, which launched him from 14th to ninth in the world standings. He started the 2020 season off quickly with the win in Waco. “It’s huge, this (Waco) is my first rodeo of the new year and I got a W,” Pruitt said. “It was funny, before Pendleton I had not won a rodeo the entire year. It did not matter where I was. I placed a lot but had not won a rodeo, and finally after Pendleton I won a rodeo.” A week later he won his second rodeo of the 2019 season at the 75th annual Four State Fair & Rodeo in Texarkana, Ark., Sept. 21 for $2,400. Without those wins, Pruitt, 28, wouldn’t have made his second qualification to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Fresh off ending the 2019 regular season ranked eighth in the world with $99,535, Pruitt started his 2020 season with a $5,937 win in Waco, Oct. 12. Pruitt had to give his main horse, Bently, a break after Pendleton, but his dad struck gold by finding a gray, 18-year-old American Quarter Horse for Pruitt to ride, named Gray Bird. “He scores really well, has plenty of run and gets down on his belly,” Pruitt said. “He’s a special kind of horse.” Gray Bird took flight in Waco with a 6.7-second run in the second round and a 6.8-second run in the final round in Waco. Winning the average in 22.8 seconds on three head boosted Pruitt’s confidence. “Now I have two horses under me, and they really like to go fast,” Pruitt said. “I’m very excited for this year now that I’ve figured

out how to go fast again.” Pruitt thought he was safe to go home after picking up $7,276 in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Aug. 25. “But no, I needed to keep going,” Pruitt said. “I won a check in Ellensburg (Wash.), and I was looking and I didn’t move up any spots, I was still 14th. John Douch, Shad Mayfield and Lane Livingston were fighting right behind me, and I was concerned.” He continued to compete across the Northwest, picking up checks in Lewiston, Idaho, and Puyallup, Wash. “I thought, surely that’s enough to get in, and it still wasn’t,” Pruitt said. “Then I won the average in Pendleton, and I could finally breathe. You sleep a lot better when you can go, ‘OK, now I’m in.’” Pruitt is returning to the Wrangler NFR with a different mindset from when he qualified in 2016. “I will take it as 10 one-headers and win as much money as I can because there are 14 other guys who made it, and they’re really fast,” Pruitt said. “It will come down to 10 knife fights, and it’ll be a fun NFR to be part of.” Fans can catch all the Wrangler NFR action on ProRodeoTV.com and CBS Sports Network, Dec. 5-14. Other winners at the $278,709 rodeo were all-around cowboy Tuf Cooper ($2,575, tiedown roping and steer roping); bareback rider Tyler Berghuis (251.5 points on three head); steer wrestlers Cade Staton and Cade Goodman (12.8 seconds on three head); team ropers Dustin Egusquiza/Jake Long (13.3 seconds on three head); saddle bronc rider Cole Elshere (253 points on three head); barrel racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi (47.49 seconds on three runs); steer roper Trevor Brazile (19.6 seconds on two head); and bull rider J.T. Moore (249.5 points on three head).

“Thanksgiving” From Pastor Randy Weaver The most healthful emotion known to human kind is the attitude of gratitude. If you’re going to serve like Jesus you have to be available, faithful and generous. And the most important attitude to have is a heart of thanks…giving. Psalm 95:1-7 O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation! Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In His hand are the dep places of the earth; the heights and strength of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker [in reverent praise and supplication]. For He is our God and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Thanksgiving: Three Ways to Look at It Looking up should make us thankful. An upward look brings thanks for the power of God. V.1 It’s time we develop a habit of thanking God, not just thanksgiving, but thanksliving. Yes, we should develop a habit of thanking God…He created us for His glory and so we should give Him the glory! An upward look brings thanks for the plans of God. An upward looks brings thanks for the power of God, the plans of God and the presence of God. Looking out should make us thankful. An outward look at supplies make me thankful. Philippians 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 6:6 Now godliness with content-

ment is great gain. Most of us spend our lives concentrating on what we don’t have instead of thanking God for what we do have. An outward look at supplies makes me thankful. An outward look at scenery makes me thankful. An outward look at salvation makes me thankful. Looking in should make us thankful. An inward look at my heart makes me thankful. In a sense, gratitude is an expression of modesty. To offer thanks is to confess dependence, to acknowledge that others have the power to benefit you, to admit that your life is better because of their efforts.

helping to make the world more beautiful. A sincere heart will recognize the privileges of serving God and others. An Upward Look Should Make Us Thankful. An Outward Look Should Make Us Thankful. An Inward Look Should Make Us Thankful. Pastor Randy Weaver Lone Star Cowboy Church 21627 Eva St.

It is thanking God for your talents and abilities by accepting them as obligations to be invested for the common good. It is thanking God for all that men and women have done for you and showing you’re thankful by doing things for others. It is thanking God for happiness by striving to make others happy. In The Spotlight With Sunny B’ Hey all you cowboys and cowgirls out there in rodeo land! I just got back from the CPRA Finals. All I can say is wow! That is one of the best finals I have witnessed in the past 8 years!!! Great rides in the rough stock, great times in the barrels and really fast runs were made in the bulldogging, calf roping, breakaway & team roping. Awesome!!! While I was there, I had the pleasure of running into the CPRA Saddle Bronc Riding director, Bill Herbert. Not sure you all knew but Bill recovered from a life threatening injury that could have very well ended not only his career but his life. I was fortunate enough to steal him away from his busy schedule to find out what all he has been going through. Sunny: Bill, I know you have been rodeoing all your life so tell me how you got your start? Bill: My dad rode bulls and bareback horses until he was 50 and he was my inspiration. I was always traveling with him. I knew it was what I wanted to do. At 5 years

old I started getting on calves and worked my way up. As I got older I picked up the timed event end of the arena by roping and bull dogging. I was Region X All Around Cowboy 4 years in a row in high school. My biggest highlight was in 1998 when I won the State All Around, a round in the bull dogging and the Bareback riding title as well.

Sunny: I know you have a wife that is also a Country Music Artist? Bill: Yes my wife is Pauline Reese. She is a 2 time Texas Entertainer of the Year and 3 time female vocalist. She is releasing her 7th album this Fall and has a duet with Willie Nelson! We have 2 daughters Heidi 11 & Henli is 9. They are very talented softball players and we spend anytime off working with them and coaching.

Sunny: That is really cool! Most people do not think a rough stock rider would also work the other end of the arena and be a winner especially in the steer wrestling! What are some of your other career stats in rodeo? Bill: I have been a PRCA Circuit Finalist 8 years, 4 time CPRA Saddle Bronc Riding Champion 2011, 2012, 2015, & 2016. I have been a member of the CPRA since 1998. I am also a 3 time UPRA Saddle Bronc Riding Champ in 2011, 2012, & 2013.

Sunny: Switching gears here tell me how does one come back from a life threatening injury and return to competition at the age of 40? Bill: It hasn’t been easy, I just knew in my heart I could not end my career in the saddle bronc riding this way. I also knew it was going to take a lot of hard work. Sunny: Can you tell me more about what exactly happened? Bill: I was making a ride at my hometown rodeo in Marble Falls and I lost my rein due to a weak wrist on a previous injury. I flipped backwards and fell. My forehead came down and touched my stomach and I felt some things crunch but had no idea the extent of what had just happened. I got up and walked out of the arena with a little dizziness. Later a vascular surgeon told me it’s because I had passed a blood clot to my brain. After that I began to feel numbness in my arms and hands.

COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM

My wife insisted that we go to the hospital and see what was going on. She drove me there after friends helped me to the car. The hospital in Marble Falls immediately transferred me to Temple. I had broken my C3 & C4 vertebrae. I was then transferred to Baylor Scott and White in Dallas, Texas after my wife made numerous phone calls to find the right doctor with the help of Dr Tandy Freeman. Dr Clovenna did the surgery going in through my neck and put a titanium plate and screws. They told me if it had been my C2 I would have been paralyzed. They found out 1 of my 4 main arteries had been shut off and the blood was not flowing. I knew something had to be bad wrong that day because I could not walk straight. So the positive side of the surgery was that my blood flow through that artery was rerouted and now flows but will never flow through that artery again. Sunny: It ad to be a pretty scarey ordeal for all of your family. Bill: Yes this was very traumatic especially for my wife. She said “she could handle broken arms but a broken neck was a whole different deal.” My girls didn’t really understand what was happening. They just knew that Daddy was sick and in the hospital. I don’t think my wife slept for an entire two months while we were in there. We had a lot of friends and family step up to help us which we were very grateful for! The upside is I was released at 6 months with a clean bill of health due to a wonderful team of doctors. I had a lot of time to ponder the situation and I talked to my wife about returning to the arena. I just knew I was not ready for my career to end this way. I felt like I had some time left. She has always supported my career and that is one thing that I love about her. However, she knew I wasn’t ready and deep in my heart I knew it as well. I needed time with God and time to get my priorities in order. God, family, Rodeo. Sunny: This had to be a very hard decision knowing age was not on your side and the kids were growing up fast? Bill: Yes it was, especially since I realized that they had their own passions to follow. It took almost two years to mentally, physically and spiritually prepare for this. I decided if I was gonna do this I had to give it 100%. I had put on a few pounds and needed to get myself back in shape. I started going to the gym, lost some weight

and really worked on this as much physically as mentally. It was not easy but I knew it was the only way I would have a chance.

Sunny: Funny rodeo stories? Bill: I was going to get on a practice bronc and Pauline told me that she thought I should pray about it to see if I was ready. I told her I was ready and so I called my friend who had stock. I asked him if I could get on that Saturday? He said “I would love for you to ride that horse Bill but it actually died this evening!” The horse was really old. I guess I should’ve prayed about it first LOL!

Sunny: How long was it from the time of the accident till you got on your 1st bronc again? Bill: My accident was in in 2016 at Marble Falls and I got on my 1st horse in September 2019 at Brenham. I wasn’t sure how it was gonna go I really just wanted something nice to ride to see how it would feel. I asked Wesley McManus if I could mount out and he said come on. It felt like I had never stopped! The following weekend I entered Coldspring and won the rodeo. Sunny: How long do you feel like you will continue to compete? Bill: I feel like I have at least a year and after this year if I still feel good I may go to just enough to make the finals and stay involved. My girls are growing up and they are starting to have a hectic schedule of things they want to do and I have to be there for them. My wife is touring a lot with her band and new album. We have two

Sunny: Anything you do that may shock or surprise our readers? Bill: Well people may not believe it but I prefer a nice red wine over a beer anyday. I love to sip fine wine! Sunny: Do you have any traveling partners? Bill: I have traveled with Craig Moore for 10 years. I am sure the majority of the stories would be things we have done or seen! Matt Medland, Todd Rangel, Brian Hammons and Jon Haygood were some good buddies I traveled with quit a bit as well. Rodeo people are like family. I feel lucky to be surrounded by such good people.

Breaking It Down With Speed Williams Getting help with your roping I always knew I wanted to teach and help people with their roping once I retired from rodeoing full time. Rickey Green was the very first to have a training web for team ropers. Not long after, once I retired from professional rodeo, I launched speedroping.com. For many years, while I was competing, I was very private about how I practiced, the drills I used, and how I worked my horses. These were things I just didn’t do around many people. But when I started speedroping.com, I published videos that showed my practice and horse training methods, for my subscribers to watch. Twenty years ago, when I first started doing private lessons away from home, I charged $2,500 per day. That’s what it was worth to me to take two or three days away from the practice needed to win a gold buckle. And if someone was that serious about getting better, I would go help. We would film and do our practice just like Rich and I did. I still charge $2,500 a day to travel away from home and $1,500 a day for lessons at my house. For those who want a little help, I charge $250 an hour with a minimum of two hours. I always incorporate video playback because it’s invaluable.

I have quite a few clients who come to my house every month or two. One of the things I’ve told them is to get all the information and help they can for their roping. I’m a firm believer in listening to my peers and their thoughts on roping and what needs to be done to accomplish goals. There’s nothing wrong with going to different instructors and hearing what they have to say because they might pick up on something someone else missed. Or they may say it in a different way that makes more sense to you. The most important tool I use when teaching is a video camera. It makes my job so much easier when you can see what I see and I can explain why. For example, if you are giving your heeler a bad corner and not handling the steer correctly, we can back the video up to when you released your horse and see where your feet and hands are. Are you in control? Are you riding correctly? When you rope are you in position to control your horse? If you’re squeezing with your right leg when you throw, but pulling with your left hand, it will cause your horse to fight you. Your feet and left hand will determine whether or not you are successful with your right hand. There are a lot of guys that do a very good job of explaining team

roping. Ultimately you need to find someone that explains it where you can understand and make it work for you. Whether you’re heading or heeling it comes down to fundamentals. If you have good fundamentals, it’s easy to build on. If you don’t have good fundamentals, or control of your horse or rope, it’s very hard to be successful. No matter who you choose, I believe you need three days to make a real change. A one-day school is very hard for first timers and tends to get people confused. It takes a few days for information to sink in, and to have a good understanding of what you’re trying to do. With the huge payouts now, many people are taking their roping more seriously and are willing to invest in getting help. It’s given opportunities to guys like me, who have been successful in this sport, to do something for a living that we thoroughly enjoy. When my kids played ball, they regularly had private lessons. I knew the advantages of one-on-one teaching and how much faster they could improve. I enjoy teaching and helping people with their roping. I enjoy it even more when I see the improvements they make from the work we’ve put in. I often tell people, “Don’t come to my house looking to be told how good you are.” I critique myself all the time and find something in every run I could have done better. My wife has had to explain this to my kids, because when they make a good run or win first, I don’t just talk about how great it was. I naturally think about

what we can do to eliminate problems or make it smoother. It’s how my mind works. With so many finals during this time of year, a word of caution not to try and make huge changes in your roping right before an event. Make sure you have the time and opportunity to get things lined out. The last thing you want to do before a big event is go to a school, fight your head with trying to change what you’re doing, and then lose your confidence. What’s new with me: I’m excited to say my daughter, Hali, is finally on the mend. After having two horses fall with her, she’s had a lot of shoulder pain this year and then recently tweaked it causing her a lot of pain. She had an MRI recently which didn’t really show much. I called Shawn Scott, my friend and chiropractor of 20 years. I used to make sure Shawn was in Vegas every year during the NFR to keep me in good shape so I could function at my best. Shawn works with Justin Sport Medicine and what he determined was she had nerves attached in places they shouldn’t be. She’s been going to physical therapy now for two weeks and is amazed how quickly the pain has subsided. She’s back in the practice pen, almost pain free and that’s exciting because I’ve really missed having my daughter in the practice pen with me. Gabe just wants to rope all day, every day. It’s been a blessing and we’ve come a long way from when they both played ball and have now decided to be ropers. It sure makes my life easier.

Eddie Taylor named 2019 PRCA | Zoetis Vet of the Year ranch in central Arizona, and I grew up with them. I didn’t get the vet medicine bug until I was 18. A friend’s horse was hurt, and we felt helpless.”

Courtesy of the PRCA Dr. Eddie Taylor, of LaPorte, Colo., was named the 2019 PRCA | Zoetis Veterinarian of the Year thanks to 32 years as the attending veterinarian at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Ariz.

It wasn’t long after that incident that Taylor enrolled in veterinary school at the University of Arizona and earned his DVM from Oklahoma State University in 1985. The following year he moved to Gilbert, Ariz., to work at an equine horse surgery facility.

“I wasn’t worth beans as a cowboy, but I still got to be part of rodeo and met so many great people in the sport that’s been my favorite sport my entire life,” Taylor laughed, adding that he’s honored to be recognized for his work. Taylor’s dad, Ed, and uncle Bill Taylor were members of the Cowboys’ Turtle Association, the precursor to the Rodeo Cowboys Association. “We were horsepoor,” Taylor said. “We had more than we should have, and he (Ed) was a great horse lover with six to eight horses on the

“I’ve had a love for horses all my life and grew up riding them, so it seemed natural,” Taylor said. By 1988, he was helping at the Tucson rodeo and has been going strong ever since. “I’m down in the arena the entire time, prepared with a medicine bag, so to speak, that can be thrown down from the announcer’s booth if something happens,” Taylor said.

Taylor was the 1998 Arizona Equine Practitioner of the Year and has served in the same capacity at Prescott (Ariz.) Frontier Days, the Coors Showdown Rodeo, the RAM Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo and other ProRodeo competitions. Taylor was instrumental in designing the animal care unit and animal care and emergency procedures for La Fiesta de los Vaqueros and leads the annual review of animal welfare procedures. He also built a mobile equine practice in Scottsdale, Ariz., and continued that service in Colorado after moving there in 2007. Taylor is also the Assistant Chief of Fire Operations for the Livermore, Colo., Fire Protection District. Although he no longer lives near Tucson, Taylor continues to make the trek from northern Colorado to southern Arizona for the annual rodeo.

said, adding that he and the Tucson crew are ready for any possible need. “Over the years, we’ve had a well-run and clean rodeo. It all goes like clockwork.” The veterinarian of the year award was created in 2010 to spotlight and honor veterinarians who have dedicated time, talent and effort to the health and welfare of rodeo livestock. “I’m just happy that the PRCA took the proactive stance in recognizing the veterinarians’ contributions to rodeo, and the PRCA took the stance a long time ago to be very proactive with it rather than reactive with it,” Taylor said. “We are providing the best care we can for the animal athletes.” Taylor will be honored at the PRCA Awards Banquet at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Dec. 4.

“It’s a great family of rodeo people there,” Taylor
