For me, publishing this magazine was like riding a motorbike on the highway above the speed limit with no helmet! But I did it! * EPO U XJTI UP SJEF NPUPSCJLFT BOE FYDFFE TQFFE MJNJUT CVU FWFO more, I don’t like to wear helmets! Yes, I know helmets are protective wear to prevent your brain from injuries and your skull from frac tures, but the idea of putting my head in a cage to protect it; that just troubles me! I like to set my mind free like a bird, to breathe like a lung and to bloom like a ower. My head holds this very precious organ named ‘brain’, which controls my emotions, my life decisions and my thinking.

hen you grow up in Texas, fashion sense is bred from varieties of boots, jeans, and rhinestones accompanied by big hair. To live up to our reputation, we adhere to the “everything is bigger in Texas” unwritten rule.

Since living in Manhattan for almost a decade, my inner fashionista has taken a new direction. I have spent years working in the fashion and beauty industry and frequenting tucked-away fashion niches all over the U.S. Like many of you, fashion feeds my soul! Whether dressing up or dressing down, fashion breeds new trends, and new trends mean more shopping!

A love of fashion invites us to shop at all hours of the day and night. It’s therapeutic stress relief for some and an addictive habit for others. YOUR QUINTESSENTIAL CLOSET Serious shoppers have probably dreamed of a shopping spree in Paris – entering the Louis Vuitton boutique to choose whatever catches their eye. Some have the means, but for most this is mere fantasy. No need to panic, there is a quick remedy for the quest for quality. Master the art of second-hand shopping. You may want that Gucci suit - but it’s not always realistic. By doing a little digging on the Internet and talking to local folks, you may find treasures buried in someone else’s closet. Here is what you need to create your quintessential closet.

First, the basics: Solids in white, grey, brown, and black. Simple patterns may work for you if they don’t look like costume attire and are suited to your body type. Accessories like belts and shoes should be seasonal. Don’t buy too much suede or too many boots. Finally, remember that your style should reflect your personality. Dress to impress yourself; life is not a fashion show for others.

It’s about your look and feeling comfortable in your own garments.

In Houston you can find a few fashion forward boutiques. My personal favorite for designer labels and luxurious accessories is a consignment shop – More than You Can Imagine – tucked away near Westheimer and Kirby at 2817 Westheimer (713.668.8811).

For true second-hand, used, and vintage clothing at major discounts look; no further than the Montrose area. Give yourself some time to get lost in all the discounts. From shoes, to designer handbags, you will surely snatch something sassy at Buffalo Exchange at 1618 Westheimer (713.523.8701).

For you travel buffs who love a good find, here is a tip for your next weekend in Manhattan, one of the fashion capitals of the world and home to incredible second-hand

shopping adventures. Bring an empty piece of luggage for your fashion finds in Soho, visit my favorite little swanky shop, INA for men and women at 21 Prince St. (212.334.9048). They also have several locations spread around NYC, including Chelsea, Union Square, and Greenwich Village.

Another second-hand must, is a secret hideaway located in the gritty East Village borough called Tokio 7 at 83 E. 7th St. (212.353.8443). Almost all designer labels are here at bargain prices. I found a pair of pristine Prada boots for a fraction of the cost.

Don’t fret the next time you are thumbing through Vogue or Details magazines.

Now you are one shopping step closer to creating your quintessential closet. Take time to visit the local thrifts, - you never know what you might find. Some of the most treasured art pieces are also the oldest. Shop the second-hand market and your wallet will wear well too. Q June 2015

MEET THE DOCTORS Dr. Jacqueline Brending is a Therapeutic Optometrist and founder of Clear Lake Eye Center. Her warmth, compassion and commitment to excellence at every turn permeate the practice and have earned Clear Lake Eye Center a reputation in the community that is second to none.

“I had vision issues as I child and after having my vision corrected, I remember being so impressed and impacted by what I had been missing,” she said. “Good vision is tremendously important. I love helping people attain that and have that same ‘wow’ moment when they truly see well.”

Dr. Brending graduated from the University of Houston, College of Optometry, with Honors in 1990. Her professional interests include: general optometry, therapeutic optometry, glaucoma specialty, and the fitting of glasses and contact lenses, including bifocal rigid oxygen permeable and soft multifocal contact lenses. She is a licensed therapeutic optometrist and glaucoma specialist. Professionally, Dr. Brending has shined throughout her career. In fact, she was one of the first doctors of optometry in the country to be named a Diplomate in the American Board of Optometry.

She is also a member of the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Brending and her husband raised their daughters in the Clear Lake area and both girls are in college now, one pursuing veterinarian medicine and the other pursuing a degree in Agricultural Business. With their nest empty, they enjoy bicycling and Dr. Brending has ridden in 12 MS 150 bike rides from Houston to Austin and she ran one Houston Marathon.

A more recent hobby for Dr. Brending is raising cows and ranching. Her youngest daughter raised three heifers while in high school and the family is now in the process of growing the herd. They own property in Huntsville, where their daughter goes to school and keep the cows there. “We are learning about growing hay and gardening,” said Dr. Brending.

Dr. Brending was honored to recently become a volunteer member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She serves on the Calf Scramble Greeters Committee. “My daughter was involved with the Calf Scramble when she was younger and I am really enjoying serving in this area. It’s a lot of fun,” she said.

Dr. Rachel Chen has worked with Dr. Brending at Clear Lake Eye Center since she was a first-year optometry student. She gained experience as a technician and assistant for Dr. Brending while earning her optometry degree. “I believe it helps me provide better care to my patients because I have experience in every aspect of optometry,” said Dr. Chen.

Dr. Chen is a licensed Therapeutic Optometrist and Optometric Glaucoma Specialist. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from The University of Texas at Austin and her Doctorate of Optometry from The University of Houston College of Optometry in 2011.

In optometry school, she served as a teaching assistant and was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society. She is also a member of the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.

Always strong in math and science, Dr. Chen also knew from an early age that she would go into the medical field.

Both her parents are biomedical researchers. Dr. Chen moved to America from China when she was in middle school and her family settled in the Galveston area. Her parents still live in League City and she is very close with them. Dr. Chen is married and has two dogs. They enjoy traveling and attending concerts.

Like Dr. Brending, Dr. Chen had vision issues when she was younger and the impact of vision correction was profound. “I actually failed the vision portion of my driver’s license test when I was 15 and that’s when I knew I had vision problems.” Once corrected, Dr. Chen could not believe how well she could see.

“I love that moment for my patients, when they can finally see really well for the first time in a long time or the first time ever,” she explained. Recently, Dr. Chen helped a new patient who was frustrated that no matter the optometry prescription he was given, he still could not see well. Dr. Chen spent a lot of time with him asking questions and performing detailed testing. “It turned out, he had a corneal disease that required a specialty contact lens. Once I fitted him with the new contacts, he was almost crying over how well he could finally see. That’s very gratifying and that’s what I love most about my job.”

hrough the years, makeup trends have taken monumental twists and turns. Women around the globe gaze over the colorful ads in fashion magazines to find the season’s hottest fashions and colors.

Unlike our clothing, we wear the same skin everyday. So it can be a challenging quest to find the foundation that’s right for our look. We want the “Fountain of Youth” in a bottle. We want the lines on our face to diminish and fade into a youthful glow. Cosmetic companies continue to produce long-lasting foundations, but how do we really know which ones actually produce results?

Sorry folks, Mac is not the answer. Neither is Bare Minerals. If you are looking for a healthy option for foundation, first dive into ingredients. Find a makeup base that is not loaded with waxes, petrochemicals, and fragrance. As a professional makeup artist with television actors and runway models from New York to Los Angeles for over a decade, I have tested all the big named companies.

s children, we are constantly reminded to eat our fruits & veggies.

As we grow into teens, we realize the importance of a balanced diet filled with servings of ripe, juicy fruits.

We watch television and see commercials depicting supermodels glorifying a hamburger. We flip thru magazines and read article after article about the new best steakhouse in town. So many books are published proclaiming that paleo diets and no carbs is the way to eat. We are searching for an answer to conform to the open ended question “How can I look like that?”

We first have to begin with our skin, and all the rest falls into place... If we treat our skin to nutrients and proper hydration, we will be on the road to beautiful skin in no time. Society has taught us that juicing is a joy! There are more juice and smoothie bars popping up around than ever before.

But we need to stay motivated and take that stroll around the fruit section at our local supermarket. There are yummy razzles & dazzles of magical fruit that will do your body some good!! Go ahead, walk down the aisle. Let’s first begin with the ever so talked about carrot. Carrots are not only a good source of bunny food - they are wonderfully wise for so many reasons. Although the carrot is not a fruit, - I am listing it here because our minds are quicker to respond to the word fruit than vegetable. This simply means we are more inclined to eat a fruit than a vegetable. So just think of carrot as a fruit...and you will eat more of them. The crackling crunch of a carrot is music to our ears, so many of us enjoy dipping them in hummus or a delicate creamy dressing. Carrots are loaded with beta carotene, an antioxidant which is converted in our body to Vitamin A. Carrots strengthen and repair our skin tissue by fighting against wrinkles and protect us from the sun’s damaging rays. We see a vibrant, healthy glow that comes from within. These shortcuts and time saving inventions are great for today’s busy families. Yet, we seem to have even less time to relax. What happened?

Choose some delightfully fragranced candles – scents that invite you to relax and unwind.

Create a playlist of your favorite relaxing music. Try Michael Buble´, Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin – whatever you enjoy.

Pour a refreshing drink – ice cold water infused with fruit, a glass of wine, or a cup of herbal tea. Create something soothing with no caffeine.

Enhance your tub with a bath bomb, Epsom salts, scented bubble bath and/or

a few drops of essential oils.

Some popular aromas for relaxation are lavender, rose, marjoram and sandalwood.

With your bath full of warm water and bubbles, candles lit, music playing, and your drink within easy reach, turn off the lights, slide into home made spa, and relax.

Know in advance that your mind is going to leave the bathroom with thoughts like, What’s for dinner, I should be doing laundry, did I pay the electric bill, and others.

When you find your mind wandering outside of the bathroom, gently focus back to what your senses are experiencing at that moment. Do you see the light from the candles dancing on the ceiling? Do you hear the calming music? Can you feel the tickle of the bubbles on your nose and the warmth of the water on your skin? What do you taste when you sip your beverage? Deeply inhale the relaxing aroma all around you.

Indulging yourself can be a struggle.

We are taught that selfishness is bad. But this is a good selfishness. This is taking care of you.

When the water begins to cool, drain the water from the tub, but do not get out yet. Feel the water level changing as the liquid leaves you. When the last of the water is going down the drain and you hear the gurgle of it vanishing altogether, imagine this is the sound of all of your stresses and anxieties going down the drain with the water.

Practice makes perfect, so I prescribe two-to-three bubbly sessions to train your body and mind to truly relax. Now, go practice your bubble bath! Mental illness stigma, Where is it taking us?

isclosure of mental illness to an employer has always been a twosided coin. On the one hand, there is the concern that if known, a company may discriminate against hiring or keeping already employed people with mental health problems. On the other hand, the employer bears the responsibility of actions taken by an employee who may or may not have disclosed any mental illness.

Revisiting this topic is especially important following the crash of German wings Flight 4U9525 in the French Alps that killed 150 people earlier this year.

It is alleged that the co-pilot, 27 year old Andreas Lubitz, intentionally took the plane down killing himself and all aboard.

A search of the co-pilot’s background showed a history of mental illness dating as far back as six years ago. In 2009, Lubitz took six months off from his flight training with Lufthansa, the parent company of German wings, while undergoing psychiatric treatment that occurred over an 18 month period. According to documents obtained by German newspaper Blid, he was deemed “unfit to fly” during that time and forced to retake his flight and medical tests in order to pass.

He passed his tests with flying colors following his return.

As far as Lufthansa was concerned, there were no medical or psychological issues pending. Lubitz had undergone a medical examination including a psychological evaluation before being hired in 2013. Though he continued his annual physicals, psychological examinations are not required annually.

Investigators searching the co-pilot’s residences found anti-depressants as well as sick notes from multiple doctors, torn up in the trash. The notes were current, excusing Lubitz from flying on the day of the crash due to illness. The illness to which the doctors were inferring is still not clear, as Lubitz concealed these medical records from his employers and colleagues.

Evidence of doctors’ visits to treat a possible problem with his eyesight has also been reported, one that might potentially ground him from his dream of being a long haul pilot for Lufthansa. These recent visits were also kept hidden by Lubitz.

Should Lufthansa have known about this? Was Lubitz required to share this medical information? The short answer is yes. Pilots are required to report any pertinent medical information especially if, as in the case of the co-pilot, they are deemed unfit to fly.

The priority now is to prevent a situation like this from occurring again.

Lubitz deliberately concealed medical information from his employer. This in turn, has opened the discussion of how airlines screen their pilots and the full disclosure expected of them with regard to physical or mental health issues.

It has been recommended that medical confidentiality for pilots be reviewed.

One such suggestion would require pilots to go to doctors that are specified by the employer. These same doctors would then be required to warn employers of any pressing concerns such as serious mental disorders. For most U.S. pilots, a doctor approved by the Federal Aviation Administration performs a medical

examination that includes a mental and emotional assessment at least once a year. To expand this concept to other airlines outside the U.S. might help resolve this problem.

The other problem is the employee’s willingness to be forthright about medical problems including mental health issues. Chances are, had Lubitz told Lufthansa about his recent doctors’ visits, the outcome would have been very different. In many cases, employees who have told their employer about mental illness have received not only the treatment needed, but

the full cooperation of their employer. There is also the chance that the employee may be considered a safety risk to others and is taken out of the position. As harsh as that may sound, the safety of many is more important than the rights of one.

Looking back just a few short months ago, had these two changes been put in place, the worst case scenario for Lubitz is that he may have found himself looking for a new career.

The best case scenario is that innocent lives would have been saved. Q

Children’s tantrums are usually a tactic to take control of a situation and get g their way. Managing public tantrums ttakes time, planning and assistance – but can be done. Prepare a trip with your child specifically to address these tantrums. The trip should include an activity that he enjoys, but will typically act out and not follow your directions.

When you inform your son of the trip and activity, describe for him the behavior he can demonstrate that will make you happy. Take along a spouse or other adult family member who is aware of your plan.

If your son has a tantrum, tell him the screaming, crying, and bad behavior does not make you happy. Have your spouse or family member take your son to the 36

car to sit and wait for you. When your son is in the car, his wait time for you should be about one minute for each year of his age (i.e. 3-year-old, 3 minutes).

No radio, toys, or other entertainment is allowed for him. Your son cannot have fun while waiting, which is the reason a grandparent is not a good choice for this assignment. Your helper should not give attention to your son. They can read and play on their phone, and enjoy themselves without lecturing your son.

Plan another trip with just you and your son. Your son will believe you have no one to separate the two of you, and will feel free to act out again. This time have a spouse or family member nearby and waiting for your call. When your son has his tantrum, make the phone call or text. He is once more removed from the pleasure of your company and having to wait for you, bored and unhappy. Please remember, your son does not get a toy or any reward for having to be taken from the store due to his behavior.

You may have to plan a few trips like these. Through all of the tantrums you must remain in control. Smile, take a deep breath and tell your son “I like being around you when you have pleasant behavior.” Always remain calm.

Yes, this is easier said than done. You will get plenty of practice.

On trips that his behavior does make you happy, make sure to inform him of how much fun you have with him.

This is the time to provide positive reinforcement for good behavior.

My son is getting into trouble at school and playing rough with other kids at recess. I have discussed it with him, though talking doesn’t seem to help.

Talking to children doesn’t always help because their logic and reasoning is not the same as an adult. He may be unable to solve his problems in a productive way or express himself verbally. These are skills that most children are still learning.

Pay attention to what he is watching on television and the video games he plays. Violent television and video games can create aggressive play. How do mom and dad express themselves? If mom and dad are aggressive, he can be learning from them.

A child experiencing anxiety or depression can exhibit aggressive behavior.

If you are unable to determine if his environmental factors are influencing his aggressive behavior, I encourage you to seek professional help from a psychiatrist and therapist that works with children.

Early intervention can reduce the possibility of being suspended from school or the need of medications.

My 9-year-old daughter has trouble going to sleep at night. Is there anything I can do to help?

It is natural for children to want to stay up all night. They do not want to miss out on the excitement adults are experiencing. So at times, getting your daughter to bed can be a battle.

Thankfully, there are strategies a prepared parent can employ to assist their child in going to sleep.

Consistent schedules are important for a child’s sleep/wake cycle and for their overall health. Mealtime, homework, playtime, bedtime and wake time should be the same everyday, including weekends and holidays.

Your daughter should go outside to run, ride her bicycle and play hard every day whenever possible. There are multiple benefits to outdoor exercise as opposed to sitting inside and playing on the computer or watching television.

Maintain an electronics-free bedroom.

No television, no video games, no phone, or other devices. These are things that stir the interest of a child fighting

sleep. Bedtime routines are good for the onset of sleep. After dinner you can begin “wind down” time. Children need it as much as adults. A calm and quiet atmosphere, a cup of chamomile tea, a warm bath, and perhaps a bedtime story can set the stage for bedtime. If you have a diffuser, you can use a drop or two of lavender or ylang-ylang to invite the sandman into her room.

Avoid allowing your daughter to consume sugar, caffeine and other stimulants in the late afternoon and evening hours. Above all, don’t let dad excite her with that last minute wrestling match or chase. Dads are good about that.

Winding down will be harder because she will know fun and exciting activities will be missed if she falls asleep. Q

Most mental health experts agree that when depression is severe enough to impact your ability to function in life, medication can be helpful; sometimes even lifesaving. However, that’s not the case for many people. In my 20 years of practice I have treated thousands of patients and tried numerous antidepressant plans, which worked for many and failed for others. Much of an individual’s success depends on the body’s unique response to the medication and ability to tolerate side effects.

A major National Institute of Mental Health study showed that fewer than 50 percent of people become symptomfree on antidepressants, even after trying two different medications. Furthermore, many who do respond to medication soon slip back into depression.

When antidepressant drugs are not effective, intolerable due to side effects, or they are contraindicated due to a health condition or other medications you might be taking, other options may be considered, such as trans-cranial magnetic stimulation of the brain (TMS). That’s why it’s very important to see a psychiatrist, not a family physician. Your family physician might diagnose or screen you for depression, but a psychiatrist is more likely to be familiar with the newest research on antidepressants and latest technology available for depressed patients. What Robin Williams can teach us about mental health and depression

e all have a distinct memory of Robin Williams.

In his longspanning career, he touched lives, young and old. Had he died of cancer, a heart attack or the Parkinson’s disease with which he had recently been diagnosed, it would still have been tragic. However, he died in a personal and more painful way. We’re not used to talking about this disease. This disease doesn’t manifest itself in the usual way. His hair wasn’t falling out. He hadn’t lost weight.

There were no signs – as far as the general public was concerned. Or, were there?

Robin Williams had spoken very openly about his issues.

We knew he suffered from severe depression as well as drug and alcohol addiction. He joked about it, but we didn’t see the seriousness. All we got was a glimpse of the zany person who kept us entertained.

When someone commits suicide, it is natural to feel some form of responsibility. Even though most of us didn’t know Mr. Williams personally, he was part of our lives. So why didn’t we see it? Why did he do it?

His daughter Zelda was recently interviewed and asked this same question. Her response was, it’s not important to ask why.

Until we find out exactly how this disease works, she explained, there’s no point in questioning it or placing blame. She went on to say, the most responsible thing we can do is take the time to talk about mental health.

Until recently, mental health was viewed as a stigma. If a family member committed suicide, it wasn’t discussed in polite company. If someone you knew was in a mental health facility, it was whispered, not discussed. It was assumed a person with mental illness had a personality flaw or suffered some self-induced instability. We now know that mental health is both behavioral and biological. It’s not just personal experience that can cause depression.

There are also physical conditions that control our mental health. Scientifically speaking, we have learned a great deal in the last decade, but we still have a long way to go to understand the causes and effects of mental health.

We’ve also learned that communication is key. Whether you are the one suffering from depression or you recognize it in someone else, the most important thing to do is to talk about it. Robin Williams did this through his comedy. He joked about his addiction problems, his divorce and the pain he felt. It appears, however, that he suffered in silence off-stage. Picture depression as a war raging inside of a person. The best way to quell this feeling is to communicate the pain and not keep it bottled up inside. For those who are dealing with someone who has depression – whether close up or from a distance – the best thing to do is be supportive and non-judgmental. or Kimberly, depression was a lifelong battle. It started when her grandmother passed away in 1996.

Her doctors wanted to put her on Prozac but she was pregnant, so they had to wait until she delivered her baby.

Before that time, she recalls being happy-golucky and energetic and enjoyed a circle of good friends. Then depression took over. “I tried everything on the market,” she says. Over time medications quit working or she could not take the side effects. Kimberly gained 80 pounds. She had no desire to go out to have fun, and it pained her to see her kids going out with friends without her. She was missing out on her life and her kids’ life because of depression. She spent a large part of each day in bed and could not feel joy.

Her life got progressively worse until she landed in the hospital for a week. This week was a turning point in her life.

When she was discharged she had only one thing on her mind – how to get out of the dark hole of depression that was controlling her life.

“My husband didn’t understand at first,” Kimberly explains.

“But when he met Dr. Ahmed, he explained that depression can be debilitating and that I am in deep need of his full support. My husband started to read about depression, search the Internet and learn all the facts. He wanted to be ready to help me when I needed him.”

Consequently, Dr. Ahmed recommended TMS therapy. “I was ready for anything,” Kimberly says. “I prayed every day to be able to afford it. I am very thankful to God. after her dad passed away eight years ago. She really wanted to create a special memory of her father – a shadow box of his favorite denim shirt. But she couldn’t talk to her mom to ask for the shirt. “Then I found myself at her door, walked in, gave her a hug and said, ‘Hi mom! How are you doing?’” Kimberly says. “I felt that life is too short to hold grudges.”

Her mom gave her the shirt. It meant a lot to Kimberly.

Her father was a special figure in her life. He was the inspiration of her poetry and was very excited when she published her first book. Today Kimberly feels that she not only restored her mother’s relationship, but also her special bond to her father’s memory.

Kimberly’s recovery journey was not an easy one. She recalls being so irritated one day during the course of TMS treatment that she asked Dr. Ahmed if she could take a “chill pill” to calm down. Dr. Ahmed asked her to try to wait until 5:00 that night before taking it. She felt impatient and annoyed and didn’t understand the point of waiting. Is your teen acting up? When she does, do you confront or ignore her? Do you often blame your teen’s behavior on yourself; telling yourself you’ve failed at raising him properly? Life with teenagers will test you and can get tricky at times, but don’t blame yourself. Instead, learn the rules of raising teens and ride the emotional waves through these tumultuous years.

Rule 1 Keep an emotionless expression.

No matter what’s going on inside your head, on the outside you must look uninterested. Stay in control. Avoid being loud, aggressive or angry. If you get angry, your teen gains control.

Rule 2 Be a good listener.

Your teen is more likely to hear you if you listen to him. Always allow him space to be heard and express himself without being criticized. Always be very sensitive to any negative remarks.

Rule 3 Speak as few words as possible.

Keep your sentences short and use the simplest phrases possible. Avoid heated topics and argumentative language.

Rule 4 During the anger phase, avoid a direct compliment.

As your child grows into a teen, you grow into a mature parent of a teen, and your role changes from pure discipline to mentoring.

reject it and turn it against you. Compliment her only when emotions settle, and then speak indirectly For example, “You should be proud of yourself for improving your grades.”

Rule 5 Do not feel you must constantly justify yourself or explain your point of view.

It is not important that your teen agree or accept your decision during a battle. Avoid unnecessary lectures.

Rule 6 Do not turn your back on him.

Instead, continue to use direct eye contact throughout the conversation. This will be difficult for him to tolerate when angry. It’s okay to end a conversation, but don’t turn your back when he is speaking.

Rule 7 Punishment and consequences should be brief and related to the bad behavior.

They should not last longer than two or three days, or they can become counterproductive. Brief and delayed punishment is very effective. For example, ground your daughter on Friday and Saturday nights, even though the confrontation was earlier in the week.

Rule 8 Do not keep adding to the punishment.

This only makes things worse and complicates the situation. Pick your battles and keep it simple.

Rule 9 Allow your teen the final word, even if it is disrespectful.

This is your way of allowing her to vent, to disengage and to break free. When things get better later, you can make her feel bad about what she said by telling her how you feel about the bad remark.

Rule 10 Attempt to end the disagreement with no hard feelings.

Show your teen you forgive him.

Remember we are only human, and humans make mistakes.

When things are going well, show your teen you love him a lot.

Don’t worry if he doesn’t reciprocate. He probably doesn’t know how to express love to you but, deep inside, he does love you. As your child grows into a teen, you grow into a mature parent of a teen and your role changes from pure discipline to mentoring.

Offer advice and be there for your teen when things don’t go well.

How to be a

When Sara Zaske moved to Berlin with her family, she was shocked at how much freedom German children were allowed.

I

n her school notebook, my daughter Sophia has set two goals: to write better letters and to walk home alone. Unfortunately, she’s probably not going to reach that second goal – because I won’t let her.

My daughter is only 8, and I’m an American mother.

Despite living in Germany for the past six years, I have a deep and slightly irrational fear that some kidnapper will pluck her off the streets of Berlin during the 500m walk between her school and our apartment.

I realize the irony. The U.S. is supposedly “the land of the free,” but we Americans tend to treat our children like little prisoners, monitoring their every move in public and restricting what they can be taught in school.

In contrast, German parents are much more relaxed. They place a high value on independence for their children. This

means that starting in the second grade, most kids walk to and from school without their parents – even on Berlin’s urban streets.

One German parent I know, Susan Sibai, allows her daughters, aged 8 and 11, to take the city bus to and from school every day. The 11-year-old even takes a tram alone to visit friends in other parts of the city. Yet, Sibai says she’s considered to be an overprotective parent because she makes them call her on their mobile phones when they arrive at their destination.

Heidi Keller, a German cultural development psychologist, doesn’t find this behavior alarming at all.

“Most young parents find it important that their children are independent,” she says. “They can go to school, take the bus, ride a bike, but parents train their children until they are comfortable to do it on their own. I think it’s important to function as an individual without the help of others.”

Keller is German, but she is far from alone in her views. In fact, by not letting their children walk alone, parents may be doing damage, making them more dependent and hurting their development.

I understand this, at least intellectually, and I’ve tried to take advantage of the many opportunities Germany presents to foster my children’s independence: my son Ozzie, now 5, spent the night at his kindergarten when he was only 4, and starting at age 6, my daughter has gone on a week-long klassenfahrt (class trip) with her entire class every year.

German mum Still, I draw the line at walking alone around Berlin, even though as a child I remember running free through my own suburban neighborhood near Buffalo, New York. The only rule I had was to stay within earshot so my mother could shout from the backyard window when it was time for dinner. (That same mother, now a grandmother, recently asked me to promise never to let my daughter walk to school by herself.)

British mums have told me similar stories of playing outside until the street lights came on or going to shops by themselves. But now, as parents, they’re almost as scared as I am. According the Policy Studies Institute, in 2013 only a quarter of English primary school children were allowed to walk home from school alone, compared with 86 percent in 1971.

What happened? Did the world really get that much more dangerous? Sensational stories and distorted statistics have certainly contributed to our fear. For instance, we’re told that 800,000 children go missing a year in the U.S., and 250,000 in the EU. Those are large numbers, but what doesn’t always come across is that most of those cases are runaways or kidnappings by family members involved in a custody dispute.

The stereotypical “stranger abduction” – every parent’s nightmare – is extremely rare. There were 115 such cases in one year in the U.S., according to the Department of Justice. And of all the calls to the missing children’s 116 000 hotline in Europe, only 2 percent involve abductions by someone who is not a parent or guardian, according to the group Missing Children Europe.

So these are not huge numbers, yet each of these horrible tragedies looms large enough to change how much freedom parents give their children. In America, it has become so bad that a couple in Silver Spring, Maryland – Danielle and Alexander Meitiv – recently faced a child neglect charge after letting their 10-year-old son and 6-yearold daughter walk home alone from a public park. Granted it was a mile, but Silver Spring, a suburb of Washington DC, is not exactly a war zone.

Such a reaction by the authorities would be unheard of in Berlin, and, I imagine, in most of Germany. It’s not as if German parents ignore the potential for bad things to happen. When it comes to their children, they’re also worried, but they try not to let it interfere with their children’s right to independence. “The smartest thing to do is to let go a little bit,” Sibai says. “And make sure they go to karate class.” continued...

LUCK FAVORS THE PREPARED German parents don’t just fling their children into the wild streets. Parents and schools make a special effort to teach skills such as traffic safety they’ll need to navigate in the real world.

My children have also had age-appropriate lessons on how to be aware of predators.

To my surprise, my daughter has also had lessons on subjects that would be unheard of in America: sex, religion and even death. I’ve swallowed my concerns and I’m starting to see how well it works.

When my daughter was 7, I was astonished to learn that she knew the basics of sex. Her teacher had read the whole class the German translation of a funny picture book called Mummy Laid an Egg! (published in the U.K. in 1994). If a grade school teacher did that in the U.S., there would probably be an uproar among parents, followed by a media circus, then a lawsuit.

Many Americans feel strongly that parents, not teachers, should control when and how children are told about sex.

German parents don’t seem to feel that same need to control what their children learn. If we stay in Berlin, Sophia will learn a lot more about sex from school as she gets older, since Germany has comprehensive sex education. And I’m OK with that, because this preparation will help her to deal better with the risks she’ll face as a young adult. According to statistics compiled by Planned Parenthood, in Germany, the teenage birth rate is three-and-a-half times lower than that in the U.S. The teenage abortion rate is about four-and-a-half times lower and the HIV prevalence rate is three-and-a-half times lower.

EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT TIME That’s not to say everything is rushed in German childhoods – some things are rather slow, like academic studies. Most children in the U.S. and U.K. are now learning to read in pre-school, but in Berlin, the kids wait until first grade, which they usually start at 6, when they all learn together. Contrary 48

to my childhood education, which involved six hours or more behind a desk in a classroom, my daughter has a half-day of instruction at a public Montessori-style school, with plenty of time for self-directed freiarbeit, where the children can work on what they like, and two outdoor recesses.

A British friend, Sarah Winborn, told me about the academic pressure that exists in the U.K., with parents using flashcards on preschoolers and pretty much teaching kids “from the moment they are born.” But since moving to Berlin and having children of her own, Winborn, a photographer who runs an online group for expat parents, has become a convert.

“I think the pressure is too great in the U.K.,” she says. “They definitely should ease up on young children, give them a chance to learn through play and let them be children longer.”

She also points out that starting school earlier doesn’t necessarily mean that a child will do better. In fact, despite all that extra pressure, U.S. and U.K. students were well behind their German peers in a 2012 assessment of reading, math and science by the OECD’s Program for International Student Assessment.

THE GERMAN WAY I don’t mean to suggest that Germany is a parenting utopia or that all German parents are the same. However, there’s something going on here in the capital of Germany that parents elsewhere could learn from.

The support for children in Berlin is phenomenal, beginning with a generous three years of maternity and paternity leave, to subsidized preschool and after-school care, and the numerous parks and affordable sports and activities for kids.

There’s also a communal attitude around children, which perhaps doesn’t exist anymore in the U.S. and the U.K. Despite my fear about some crazy person abducting my kids, I take comfort that most of the people who interact with my children – teachers, friends, neighbors, even the people who work in the local shops – are actually looking out for them.

Take this story from Lor Ather, a British expat mum. Her 4-year-old son and his father went to a local park and the boy suddenly took off and hid really well. Frantic, his father ran home to get Ather to help search for him. But by the time the two set off to the park , a woman, a stranger, was already bringing him to their home.

“I don’t know where else somebody would do that,” Ather says.

hoosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you must make; but how do you find the right “fit” for your child’s individual needs? The basic choices are endless: public, charter, private, parochial, home-school. With each basic choice, there are all kinds of variations. How do you decide?

More and more parents are choosing private school education for their children. A recent study by the Friedman Foundation found that the top five reasons parents chose private school for their children are all related to school climate and classroom

management, including “better student discipline” (50.9 percent), “better learning environment” (50.8 percent), “smaller class sizes” (48.9 percent), “improved student safety” (46.8 percent), and “more individual attention for my child” (39.3 percent) .

St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal School, located on Clear Lake in Nassau Bay, has been voted the “Best Private School in the Bay Area” two years in a row. In a recent school survey, St. Thomas parents indicated that they bring their children to this school because of the small class sizes, individual student attention given by the highly qualified and caring faculty and staff, and the nurturing and challenging learning environment.

One parent said, “The environment is so loving and warm. I knew my kids would feel loved there. The playground was a big bonus. We have stayed so long, too, because of the incredible faculty at St. Thomas.” Another parent indicated she was drawn to the school by its small class sizes, computer lab, and robotics.

“Little schools have charm and character. We feel welcome.

The older building feels more comfortable than sterile modern facilities. We were made to feel like part of the family.”

Dr. Mohamed Ahmed, Bay Areas’ well known child psychiatrist also had a similar experience with his son. “St. Thomas helped my son transition smoothly to middle school and do well thereafter in the WAVE program. Thanks to the caring and loving environment that he found at St. Thomas that helped him regain his self-confidence and build the resilience needed to perform and succeed in middle school.

Transitioning from a happy, loving preschool environment to a highlyranked kindergarten program, “Matthew” scored very high on early gifted achievement testing; however, due to budget cuts, Matthew was not admitted into the school’s gifted and talented program. His teacher found it difficult to implement an individualized curriculum for him because she had 23 other students in the classroom. As time progressed, Matthew’s parents started to see a marked decline in his self-esteem, creativity, and motivation. The daily struggle of sitting, waiting quietly for classmates to finish assignments, started a chain of changing behavior—from talking in class to having frequent tears. “Matthew started to dread going to school,” said Mom. “We started looking for a new school and even considered home-schooling.” Matthew’s parents researched and visited over ten schools in the Bay Area and chose St. Thomas. “We are ecstatic with the academic challenges, as well as the nurturing environment our son is receiving. The joy is back in his eyes!”

on Mars Could a mother’s grass be greener on the red planet?

ts 5.30 in the morning when I am awakened by my ringing alarm clock, If I could only get ten more minutes of sleep that would be heaven! I press the snooze button and drift back to sleep. Moments later the alarm forces me from my cozy warm bed and I drag myself to the bathroom, quickly brush my teeth, then move to my kids’ rooms to wake them up for school.

As I enter Sophie’s room, I let out a big sigh. Here comes the daily struggle.

My 7-year-old does not want to get out of her bed. My 9-year-old surprises me by hopping quickly out of bed. I was truly impressed! But then had to push

her into a decision, when she spent 20 minutes choosing an outfit to dress like her BFF. Dashing to the kitchen, I whip up three breakfasts to-go and prepare school lunches. While in the midst of my meal prep, Sophie came in running and with wide-eyed excitement. “Can you fix my hair in the French braids I saw on my show last night,” she asked. Despite my frustration with time management, I couldn’t disappoint her.

With everyone finally ready, we jumped into the car. I grabbed my coffee, cereal bar and makeup case. Along the way I found myself wishing the stop lights were

a bit longer so I’d have more time to apply my makeup.

At 7:48 sharp we arrive at school and the kids are out the door. I head to work.

On my way to my office, I bumped into my new, moody boss in his usual not-sogood mood.

I made it to my desk, took a seat, and closed my eyes for just a moment to regain my inner calm. A full-fledged daydream ensued, and I found myself transported to another world – a peaceful, slower pace. It was like hearing your favorite old song on the radio. An escape that whisks you away for just a short, but meaningful, time.

While watching the news the other day I learned of the Mars One project. It’s

the first permanent human deployment on Mars and allows a different group of four people to live on the alien planet every two years.

To me, it sounded like a dream come true! Could this become the real escape from earth? The idea seemed enticing; so I decided to research it.

Mars is known to be a very dusty planet. Therefore, astronauts are advised to stock up on laundry detergent! That didn’t sound very promising, especially to

someone like me. One of my reasons to escape earth is to get rid of the never-ending piles of laundry.

A day on Mars is a bit longer than a day on earth and a year on Mars has a greater number of days than a year on earth. Does this mean I will have more time to finish my chores and enjoy extra sleep?

When it was time for the reality picking my children up from school, I could see them waiting for me impatiently. Then I noticed the beautiful smiles on their faces as soon as they saw me in the car pool lane. I realized what priceless joy they bring to my life every day, in spite of all our family challenges.

We often think the grass is greener on the other side. However, once we reach the other side we often look back with regret. Perhaps my trip to Mars is not such a good idea after all.

My deep thoughts are interrupted by a sweet little voice – my 3-year-old asking, “Mommy, can you read me a story after dinner?” I know exactly which story to read him. It’s my favorite book, Love You Forever. Q

Drivers know it’s dangerous to text but do it anyway

n the cold rainy morning of September 2, 2006, 19-year-old Reggie Shaw texted 11 times in a period of a few minutes before he hit another car.

He was a good all American teenager, and a lot like the thousands of adolescents and adults in America who text in their cars. In this case, his

distractions killed two rocket scientists, led to an unprecedented investigation into what technology does to our brains, and demonstrated how one can turn his life around after a fatal mistake.

Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times journalist Matt Richel’s book, A Deadly Wandering, tells Reggie’s tale. It is interwoven with scientific information and stories of those

involved in his tragedy and ultimate redemption.

After months and years of formal investigation and a criminal trial, Reggie denied any responsibility, until he heard the testimony of University of Utah psychologist David Strayer, a researcher who studies driver distraction.

“When Reggie heard the science he had a reckoning, an instant recognition built through having been worn down by guilt and grief,” Ritchel said. He understood what was happening inside his brain and how it fed this tragedy.

Reggie Shaw then accepted responsibility, served his time, and began speaking in front of thousands about the dangers of texting and driving. “The solution is easy,” Shaw says. “Put your phone away when you drive. You might save a life that day. The

message can wait. This is a global problem.”

Even Richtel was surprised to learn why, despite the dangerous distraction of texting while driving, we do it anyways. “What I have learned is the device is not simply an information delivery system,” he says. “The device plays to our most primitive social wirings, tickles the brain and demands we pay attention to it because we don’t know if the information coming is essential.” Some research shows that playing with your phone induces a dopamine squirt – the same neurochemical involved in the most primitive rewards received from food or sex. It is the same type of chemical involved in drug addiction, so our capacity to ignore the device is very difficult. “Scientists describe it as hijacking of our brain,” Richtel adds.

This includes texting and driving, talking on the cell phone, putting make up on, and even putting your CD on in your car. They are all dangerous distractions and we have gotten to the point that if we don’t do it, we get withdrawal symptoms,” Shah says.

Texting and driving is a huge problem. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year and texting and driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk.

According to a study by Cohen Children’s Medical center, texting and driving is now the leading cause of death among teenagers, surpassing drinking and driving.

Currently 39 states have texting and driving laws, but Texas has no statewide ban on texting and driving. The Texas Department of transportation reports 40 cities in Texas have bans on texting and driving. Veteran lawmaker Tom Craddick attempted to pass a comprehensive Texas law, but the former governor vetoed it.

“The only way to stop talking or texting is to deactivate your cell phone as soon as you get into a car. We won’t likely stop it ourselves,” says Shah.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found 94 percent of Americans believe texting and driving should be outlawed; yet millions continue doing it. Q

OUT OF TRAGEDY, TRIUMPH Reggie’s law was named for Reggie Shaw who, at 19, was texting while driving and killed two men. The Utah law… penalizes a texting driver who causes a fatality as harshly as a drunken driver who kills someone.

In effect, a crash caused by such a multitasking motorist is no longer considered an “accident” like one caused by a driver who, say, runs into another car because he nodded off at the wheel. Instead, such a crash would now be considered inherently reckless.

Offenders face up to 15 years in prison.

or a child to go missing is a horrible nightmare for any parent. Some are kidnapped by relatives, some by predators, some choose to run away. Whatever the scenario, statistically, when a child does go missing, the first few hours are critical.

Despite the heartache of such cases, much good has come from the efforts of police, friends, family members and others to find these children in a quick manner. One such concept is the AMBER alert. The AMBER alert program was established to inform the community of the most serious child-abduction cases, in the fastest manner possible.

AMBER Alerts are issued for abducted children 17 years of age or under who are at risk of serious injury or death. Once an AMBER Alert is issued, law enforcement agencies, transportation agencies, television, radio, print, electronic signs and billboards, and the wireless industry all send out information to assist in finding these children.

Now, in 2015, Facebook has joined the AMBER Alert team.

With 185 million members in the United States, the social media giant is including AMBER alerts directly on the second slot of the newsfeed of all of its users.

Not every AMBER Alert appears on every newsfeed, only the ones pertinent to the Facebook users’ surrounding area. It will include a photo as well as details about the child or children and location of the abduction. In addition to the astounding number of users on Facebook, the ease of sharing is probably Facebook’s most impressive quality. Already users have found that once the AMBER Alert is issued, the piece is shared with friends and spreads like wildfire across the internet.

In March, a 2 year old boy was found after a family friend who was babysitting the boy, saw his picture on an AMBER Alert on Facebook. The boy had been abducted by his maternal grandmother who, along with another woman, subdued the boy’s mother with a stun gun and tied her up in a garage.

Once the babysitter confirmed it was the same boy, he contacted the authorities.

This wasn’t the first child abduction case to make it to Facebook. In fact, many have been using Facebook for years to successfully find missing children as well as adults. Just like on the AMBER Alerts, users have posted the pictures and details of missing loved ones to spread amongst friends in hopes of finding them. Many have found success through social media, again, because of the easy ability to quickly share the information. In addition to Facebook, AMBER Alerts are also on Twitter.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) website, social media has helped to resolve over 98% of AMBER

Alerts since 2005.

The AMBER Alert was named for 9 year old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, TX who was kidnapped while riding her bike. Dallas law enforcement worked closely with the media to find the young girl who, despite their best efforts, was later found murdered. The goal of the AMBER Alert is to use the eyes and ears of the community to safely recover missing children as quickly as possible. In 2003 it became a nationwide alert system. Today, the program is used in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and has helped to find over 700 children. The U.S. Department of Justice coordinates the AMBER Alert program on a national basis which averages about 180 alerts per year.

It’s hard to believe but as early as the 1980s there was no database for missing children. It was left to local law enforcement and whatever efforts were made on the part of family and friends to recover a child. Even the media was rarely informed. There were very few cell phones, no internet, no social media and the message rarely traveled past the city limits.

It all started to change when, in 1979 Etan Patz went missing in New York on his way to school. The media began reporting on missing children and the citizens of the United States started to take note. Then in 1981, 6-year-old Adam continued...

Walsh was kidnapped from a Florida shopping mall and later found murdered. His parents, John and Revé Walsh, were disappointed to find no coordinated effort among law enforcement either on a state or national level for missing children. As a result of what happened to Adam, his parents started the Adam Walsh Outreach Center for Missing Children in Florida, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving as a national resource for people with missing and exploited children.

This lead to Congress enacting the Missing Children’s Act in 1982 and all information on missing children was entered into the FBI’s National Crime Information Center database or NCIC. In 1984 the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children opened.

The Adam Walsh Outreach Center later merged with NCMEC in 1990.

The Walsh family has also served as political activists on missing children and victims’ rights issues including the

enforcing of the national sex offenders registry. John Walsh has hosted numerous crime fighting shows, most notably, America’s Most Wanted on the Fox Network which featured stories, pictures and information about criminals. Not unlike information seen on social media today, he appealed to the public to aid in the hunt for these criminals and put them behind bars.

t’s no secret that most Americans go out for meals more often than they should. Not only is it bad for your waistline, it’s a pricey habit to break.

With a little effort, you can change your dining patterns.

Pack lunches that you’re actually going to want to eat. It’s too easy to

abandon your turkey sandwich if you’re packing yourself the same thing to eat every day. Try a baked potato one day, soup and crackers another, and so on to maintain variety.

Make your own salads. Salads can be one of the healthiest options out there when you’re buying lunch out.

They can also be one of the priciest.

Buy some deep, large plastic containers for all of your ingredients and keep a bottle of your favorite dressing in the work fridge. One of my favorite DIY salads is comprised of mixed greens, fresh berries, walnuts, goat cheese and sliced turkey with a vinaigrette dressing.

Each week, commit to cooking at least one bigger meal that you can split up. Cooking for yourself can

be tricky if you’re single and live alone since it’s easy to get tired of eating the same thing. Try cutting a recipe in half (for example, just cook half a box of pasta) so that you have at least one serving to eat right then and another one you can take for one weekday lunch.

Give yourself a limit-like eating out only twice a week. By doing this,

you’ll have something to look forward to each week and can have the best of both worlds if you have a favorite spot to occasionally treat yourself to.

Pack healthy snacks. Utilize your work fridge and keep a week’s worth of Greek yogurt, baby carrots or whole fruit for easy access. Avoid carrying cash if you can to also help resist the urge to buy something processed from the vending machine.

If you have a sweet tooth, bake your own treats. If you’re like me, a

day without dessert is like a day without sunshine, and that’s okay in my book as long as you don’t overdo it. Homemade cookies can’t suddenly be dubbed “healthy” just because you made them yourself, but you are better off when you know exactly what all went in them, and you can make healthy substitutions such as whole-wheat flour and egg whites. Plus, it’s so easy to bring in homemade treats for sharing, and your coworkers will surely love you for it. Q June 2015

I know the facts about the ingredients and I get disgusted to watch people wait in line at drive thrus. Late at night, fast food chains rake in the dollars by the minute, because most families do not want to stand over a hot stove and make dinner after a long day at the office. Fast food is the simple way to feed a family. Very simple, but very saturated with awful things for us.

After becoming a teenager and joining in on the Coffee Craze - the next Fast Food fad had blossomed down the street. Something called Starbucks. A simple shop that most of us know all too well. Starbucks was the place to order that famous frappuccino - Actually, it still is!!! Only thing is , I no longer give in to the gimmicks and gadgets of fast food marketing. I took part in the cult , but decided that after ten cavities I needed to dissuade myself from the standing in line.

The Starbucks cafes have become so prevalent, New York City seems to have one on every block! The muffin case, the whip cream, the candied cake pops - Starbucks is a play pen for the sweet tooth. Let’s be realistic, the snacks here are anything but healthy. They are loaded with sodium and sugar that makes us crave and then crash. A Starbucks grande coffee contains 320 milligrams of caffeine, over four times the amount of caffeine in the also unhealthy Red Bull drink. The Starbucks cinnamon chip scone houses 480 calories - significantly more calories than a McDonald’s quarter pounder. Graduating high school and becoming an adult , I began to focus more on nutrition and eating at home. After all, I lived on a small farm where hand-picked eggs from the chicken coop were the norm. We harvested our own vegetables from the garden and sourced fruit from the trees around our home. The fast food fiesta was fun while it lasted , but the harsh reality was setting in. I had become a full blown Foodie! I began watching videos on the fast food industry. Watching documentaries disclosing the somber stories of where majority of companies source their livestock and poultry. I would no longer be partaking in the party of drive thru corporations.

We need to be aware of what we are consuming. As we age, bacteria and viruses become more difficult to battle. Food borne illness and Diabetes are on the rise

in the American society, and precautions and healthy habits need to be a priority. Being a foodie has allowed me to dive into the culinary world and do my research. My concerns and health anxiety have created a subtle snootiness when I visit local malls and shopping centers. The sugar and salt ratio is the mass of every food court!

Thankfully, more stores like Whole Foods , Trader Joes, and Sprouts are opening doors around the USA. It’s a one stop shop , with a juice bar, coffee bar, salad bar, and hot food ready for the taking! Meals at Whole Foods are low sodium, organically sourced, and fiber rich. When we find ourselves debating over the five-dollar Starbucks frappucino or the Kenyan drip coffee served up daily at Whole Foods , think about yourself for a moment. Think about being good to your body and abstain from joining the fast food crusade to obesity.

With one last word of advice - The next time you hear somebody say , “Oh, but Whole Foods is too expensive...” Ask them how much they spent on their Mint Frappe at Starbucks this morning? Q June 2015

In an age where many industries have gone the way of impersonal electronic and automated transactions, many people are looking for something a little more personal when it comes to their bank.

The key is to determine your comfort level with a bank, rather than focusing on the institution’s size. “Find a bank that will look out for you,” says J.P. Morris, Vice President and Relationship Manager at Texas Citizens Bank. “That’s not about size; that’s about culture. It’s important to find someone you know and trust and to have a point of contact who knows you and will look out for you. If you appreciate old-fashioned service, a smaller community bank is a great choice.”

“There are lots of great community banks out there and it’s worth your time to find the one you feel comfortable with,” Morris adds.

“There is a saying that goes - ‘You don’t bank with the bank, you bank with the banker.’ So be sure you like and trust your banker.”

So, just what are the advantages to banking with a locally owned community bank? Here are a few questions you can ask yourself when trying to determine which type of bank is best for you, your family or your business: 1. What kind of relationship do you want with your bank? personal, long-term relationship with your bank and the people who run it, that will be more easily achieved at a local, community bank. “I do believe a community bank is able to provide better customer service and a personal touch that people really appreciate,” says Morris. “With local banks, your banker lives in the area and has a vested interest in the community.”

2. How much access do you need to your bank and your money? If

you want to visit your branch often, a community bank near your home and work may be the better choice – especially since

most community banks offer fewer fees than their bigger bank counterparts. Also, smaller, locally owned banks often are able to provide more prompt decision-making on business and consumer banking issues because decisions are made locally. Often, in larger banks, credit decisions are centralized and made by individuals that reside out of state. “Additionally, a local bank has more ability to be responsive and flexible for each customer,” said Morris says. “Because of their size, big banks have to be more process driven and don’t have that same flexibility.”

3. Do bank fees bother you? Some 63 percent of small banks offer free checking, according to a survey by U.S. PIRG released in November 2012. They also have lower overdraft fees and balance requirements for avoiding checking fees.

Some small banks are even reimbursing several, if not all, surcharges at out-of-network ATMs, U.S. PIRG says.

4. How important is supporting local businesses to you? Larger national

banks often take deposits and lend them to customers out of state. But in a local bank, deposits benefit the cities and neighborhoods where it’s customers live and work, helping local communities remain strong and vibrant. “It’s important to note too, that a locally owned bank is a small business, so it really understands the needs and concerns of small business owners,” Morris adds.

t one point or another, we all have existing stress in our lives, whether it has to do with our families, work, or our financial situation, or altogether. It’s no secret that exercise contributes to general happiness and overall health. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that healthy adults get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (such as brisk walking or swimming) or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity (such as running). Here are some tips to help you adopt a healthy exercise routine to promote general health and happiness.

Develop a routine and stick to it. I run most mornings before work because it wakes me up and makes me feel energized and ready to tackle the day. I also know that when I get home from work, I’m going to want to just eat dinner and veg on the couch, something I can do without guilt if I worked out in the morning. Plus, let’s not forget, this is Houston – once we’re in the dead of summer, it could be pushing 80 degrees at 7 a.m., which would be the coolest time of day.

Pick an activity that you love. My calling

is definitely running. If you try to follow the masses and pile on the trendy spin classes because seemingly everyone else is doing it, you’re bound to compare yourself to others and give up easily. Whether it’s yoga, cycling, walking or gardening, choose something that you truly enjoy.

Adopt a pet. First, take

the time to consider if you’re in a position

ost people know that being overweight puts them at greater risk of numerous illnesses, but losing weight — especially for people who are obese — isn’t always as easy as counting calories and hitting the gym.

Obesity and the health-related problems that it produces continue to drive up the cost of health care nationwide, with obesity linked to more than 40 diseases. The estimated medical cost of treating obesity was nearly $150 billion in 2008, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Recognizing the unsustainable increase in cost, a number of employers offer incentives for employees — such as a decrease in the cost of insurance — to lose weight or join a gym. That is not always enticing enough or perhaps practical for employees to make lifestyle changes.

At the same time obesity rates have gone up, gym memberships have increased to 50.2 million in 2012 percent from 45.5 million in 2008, according to data provided by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association.

More people may be joining gyms, but it doesn’t mean more are making effective, long-lasting health changes.

Indeed, 78.6 million Americans, or one-third the U.S. population, are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While working out at the gym or giving up that daily bowl of ice cream might keep away the

extra pounds for some people, others need alternative options.

The number of Bariatric surgeries, such as the gastric bypass or lap band surgery, performed in recent years has also been on the rise, to 179,000 in 2013 from 158,000 in 2011, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

For good reason, too as the health effects of weight loss surgery have been analyzed by a number of studies. For instance, one recent study found gastric bypass patients lost kept off nearly 30 percent of their initial weight two years following their surgery. The article, published in January this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found “a statistically significant reduction in all-cause mortality.”

Another group of researchers determined, “that risk of an emergency department visit or hospitalization for asthma exacerbation decreased by half after bariatric [weight-loss] surgery and remained significantly lower for at least 2 years,” according to a study published in March this year in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Weight loss surgical procedures work by limiting the amount of food a person’s stomach can hold, with gastric bypass surgery and the lap band procedure being two, timetested, surgical weight loss methods.

Gastric bypass is more complex than other procedures, requires a longer hospital stay and may result in more complications. It also requires individuals to follow a specific diet, including a vitamin and mineral supplementation schedule, according to ASMBS. At around $20,000 the cost can also be prohibitive for some.

The lap band procedure, which costs about $10,000, is more affordable. For the procedure, a doctor places an inflatable band at the top of the stomach, thus decreasing its size.

Weight loss with the lap band is slower to start and requires a foreign device to remain in the body. If patients over eat while wearing the band, it can stretch the esophagus. A small number of patients have had the band slip or have had mechanical problems with the band. Patients who undergo this procedure must follow a strict postoperative diet. It is also the procedure with the highest re-operation rates, according to ASMBS. While both procedures have advantages and disadvantages, the long-term health benefits are undeniable. Both gastric bypass and the lap band procedure have been shown to decrease the risk of death and obesity-related disease. As the cost of health care continues to increase for all Americans, those who are afflicted by weight-related health conditions may have even more incentive to pursue surgical weight loss options.
