I have to call my 23-year-old son every morning to get him out of bed so he will not be late to work. I don’t want him to lose his job. How can I make him more independent so I do not have to call him every day?

You do not HAVE to call your son, you choose to call him.

As long as you are more worried about him losing his job than he is, you will continue to call and he will continue to not worry about it.

I suggest that you have a conversation with him and inform him that you will no longer call him in the mornings. It will be his responsibility to awaken on time, get to work and keep his job.

If he loses his job, it is a natural consequence for irresponsibility.

You might also be prepared to set conditions as to whether you will pay his bills or not. I suggest you do not pay his bills. Also inform him that moving back in with you is not an option. This will be a difficult conversation, and if you want him to become responsible for himself, you need to have it.

Loving mothers want to see their children succeed. Sometimes they want the success so much they tend to do all the work for their children, which can send the message, “I don’t think you are capable”. Give your son the ability to earn some self-confidence by letting him know that you believe he can take care of his own responsibilities.

My 9-year-old son is unruly. I have taken everything away from him and he continues to be disrespectful and disobedient. I need other ideas for punishment.

When parents use activities and toys as punishment instead fun, children tend to develop an “I don’t care” attitude and the items lose their pleasure value. He may lose interest in any type of activity or hobby for fear that you will take it away.

Instead of using the loss of items as a punishment for your son, create a rewards system. Have him earn everything he gets.

Be specific on he how he can earn his items. Keep the rewards system simple.

Define what behavior you want from him. Avoid using general words such as “good” and “respectful”. Describe to him what is expected.

I don’t think my 8-year-old daughter is making enough progress with her therapist. She has been in therapy for one month and I am only seeing a little progress. Do I need to find another therapist?

Every one makes progress at different rates. If you are seeing gradual progress with an 8-year-old girl, I think that is good. I suggest you talk to your daughter’s therapist about your concerns.

Let the therapist know what you are expecting and the two of you can work together for your daughter.

Usually therapists will ask parents to make some adjustments at home to help with the child’s progress. If the therapist has asked you to do some things at home, follow through, make the adjustments at home and watch the changes that occur. When the entire family is involved more progress can be seen.

My 5-year-old son does not play with other children. He prefers to play alone. Do I need to worry about him?

Just like anything else, there are developmental stages to play.

Your son could be in the stage called parallel play. He can play next to other children, they may have the same type of toys, and they usually do not interact with one another. The more he plays around peers, the better his play can develop.

If you are concerned that he may have a developmental delay or Asperger’s disorder, you can have him evaluated by a child psychologist at a clinic such as the Psyclinic in the greater Houston area.

All of the teachers at my 12-year-old son’s school are always disciplining him. The other children bully him and they do nothing. I’m afraid my son’s self esteem may be suffering because he is becoming angry at home, yelling and throwing things and not following directions.

How can I help him?

When there is a problem at school, go to the school and talk to your son’s teachers. Keep open communication with the teachers and make yourself available for them.

When you do talk to them, be prepared to hear what you do not want to hear. You stated “all” of his teachers are “always” disciplining him. Usually, when all of the teachers are having problems with your son, it might be that your son needs correction and not the teachers. Maybe your son is not telling you the whole story.

You reported that he is yelling, throwing things and not following directions at home. He may be displaying the same behaviors at school, which can lead to suspension or expulsion.

This sounds serious and your son needs help with his anger.

Find a professional therapist for your son to help him learn to express his anger in a healthy manner. You should get him help quickly. He is 12 years old and will grow bigger and stronger rapidly. He could soon be in trouble with the law if this is not addressed.

I have an 8-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter with my ex-husband. My ex-husband always starts fights with me in front of the children, telling me what I can and cannot do with them. He tells me which doctors, what medicines what sports, etc...he wants the children involved with. He only sees them every other weekend and lives in a different city. The children do not listen to me, my son is disrespectful to me and I am constantly frustrated and cannot sleep. Is there anything I can do to get my ex to let me raise my kids my way?

You have heard the phrase “It takes two to tango”. He cannot argue with you if you do not give him anything to feed from. I know, it is easier said than done. Thinking of your children’s best interest should make it a little easier. Please do not fight with him if the children are in the same room. continued...

Keep some things in mind. He is your EX. He no longer has power or control over you. His happiness is no longer your concern. You two created a beautiful daughter and son together and their best interest is what is important at this time. If the fighting continues, your children will either withdraw from both of you or use your fighting to manipulate both of you.

Quit trying to fight for control. Give it to him. If he believes the children should go to select doctors, he can take off work and take them to those doctors. If he wants them in selected sports, tell him it sounds like a good idea and let him sign them up, pay the fees and get them to practice and games. Tell him he is their father and HE can do it his way.

Stay calm, stay in control of you. Do not be sarcastic or rude.

No facial expressions. Maintain your dignity. You are teaching your daughter how to be dignified and how to take care of herself. You are teaching your son how to treat women. When they see men are disrespectful to you, and you allow it, they will believe that is the way it is supposed to be.

You do not have to tell him what you and the children are doing for fun. Do not worry about what events are taking place at his house. Keep to your routines so the children know what to expect at your home. Be consistent when they are with you.

When they return from dad’s house, ask if they had fun. Do not ask what they did at dad’s house, allow them to volunteer the

information. You are trying to develop trust with your children. If they are concerned that you will become mad about what they do over at dad’s house they may begin keeping secrets from you. Be happy for them that they had fun and spent time with dad. Q

I “

was twelve and they told me I was going to die,” said Belen, who lives in Argentina. “They didn’t understand anorexia where I lived, so they brought me here to the capital, Buenos Aires in 2013.” Today at age 22, after three years in treatment, Belen is feeling normal and hopeful.

Belen is being treated at ALUBA, the Argentinian Association against Bulimia and Anorexia. It is estimated that one out of 10 children in the country is affected with at least one of these two eating disorders.

According to the National Institute for Mental Health, bulimia and anorexia nervosa are the two most common types of eating disorders. With bulimia, a person binges and then purges. They fast, take diuretics and often exercise obsessively.

Anorexics want to be thin at all costs and often starve themselves. No matter how thin or malnourished they are, people with these conditions still see themselves as overweight.

Individuals who suffer from these conditions also tend to have an excessive concern with body weight and shape.

Argentina is considered South America’s most European and fashion conscious country. Now better known as the birthplace of Pope Francis and soccer star Lionel Messi, it is also known as the country with the most cases of bulimia and anorexia in the world, second only to Japan.

Dr. Mabel Bello, psychiatrist and founder of the ALUBA clinic and foundation, discovered these eating disorders appear to have a genetic component. It runs in families. “We have been working on this for 30 years and we realized we had to work with the whole family,” said Dr. Bello. “To stabilize the patients,

we had to stabilize the family. We also found these kids had unrealistic expectations about their body image. They wanted to be thin and attractive. This was part of our sick culture, where how you look and your body matters the most.”

Dr. Alejandra Moisello, who specializes in nutrition, agrees.

“Body image in Argentina sometimes is valued more than intellectual capacity,” said Dr. Moisello. “It is also a fact that a thin person seems to have better possibilities to find jobs or success than a person who is obese here.”

Clarin, an Argentinian national newspaper, reported that two local psychiatrists, Drs. Eduardo Leiderman and Fabian Triskier, conducted a study and found that 50 percent of Buenos Aires adolescents feel they are overweight even though they have normal weight. Many will then engage in unhealthy eating behaviors to lose weight or smoke which suppresses appetite.

These two eating disorders also tend to be more common in people who also suffer from depression, alcoholism, manic depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Victoria, now 22, began showing symptoms of bulimia when she was 13. She also began to drink heavily as she got older.

“One day I just couldn’t get out of bed. I was so depressed.

That’s when I decided to seek help,” she said.

Dr. Bello explains how the program works. “What we do first with these patients is correct certain habits, hygiene, meal schedules, improve family relations, and improve their social skills,” she said. “For example, we allow them to be creative in their therapy groups. They can dance, sing, and act so they start continued...

to feel less ridiculed. We teach them to talk effectively, to breathe and think before they speak. They also become part of a group and each person in the group helps each other. They feel that solidarity and they decide their own rules. We also don’t use the same psychiatric medications often used to treat these disorders.

We use mood stabilizers instead, if needed.”

“I noticed a change within a month,” said Victoria. “What helped me the most was the group setting. Before, I had one-on-one therapy, but here, I couldn’t lie. It was impossible to lie. I didn’t feel alone anymore.

Also what helped me a lot was having a structure in my life. I had to get up at a certain time, and then eat at a certain time. I really needed that.”

Belen added, “I think it is important for people to know there is a cure and that this is not just about food. It is also about trying to be

perfect. We are constantly bombarded with perfect images in the media. Here, we learn just how to be ourselves and be okay with that.”

Dr. Bello says she follows her patients at least four years once they complete the program. “I want to make sure they live and heal in the real world,” she said.

The International Journal of Eating Disorders reported that only one out of ten men and women in the United States seeks treatment for these conditions, yet eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Post-partum Depression…

It can affect anyone... including celebrities

ctress Brooke Shields was raised in the public eye, starting her career at only 18 months old.

She grew up in the tumultuous 80s, surrounded by sex, drugs and rock and roll. By the time Shields was 14, she had been featured on the cover of Vogue, modeled for Calvin Klein jeans and had acted in movies and on television. In spite of her fame, Shields kept herself on a straight and narrow path and graduated from Princeton before coming back to her career in Hollywood. So when she openly discussed that her postpartum depression had her on the brink of suicide, it took the world by surprise.

Shields is one of the first celebrities to give a face to postpartum depression—a condition defined as depression suffered by a mother following childbirth, typically arising from the combination of hormonal changes, psychological adjustment to motherhood, and fatigue. Although the condition strikes one in seven women, the mere shame of its symptoms has kept many quiet on the subject. It varies from excessive mood swings to the thought of harming oneself or the baby. Most mothers suffering have difficulty bonding with the new baby, leaving them with feelings of guilt and hopelessness.

In Shields’ case, she went through years of trying to get pregnant, so the depression she felt after finally accomplishing her goal of motherhood was the antithesis of what she expected. “The scariest part in the world for me was looking at my daughter and truly not feeling connected at all,” Shields said in an interview.

The causes of postpartum are not well defined, however there are physical and emotional issues that are factors. After childbirth, many women experience a drop in certain hormones, which leaves them feeling tired and sluggish. Sleep deprivation is already an issue with a newborn, so this heightens the struggle to stay focused and in control. Anxiety levels can also increase causing mood swings and excessive crying.

Postpartum depression should not be confused with “baby blues� which, although it shares some of the same symptoms, only lasts a few days or weeks. Postpartum depression may start as late as six months after birth and can last many more months if left untreated.

An even more extreme version of postpartum depression is postpartum psychosis. It is more likely to occur when the mother or a member of her family suffers from bipolar disorder. While someone with postpartum depression may have momentary thoughts of suicide, a person with postpartum psychosis will feel more likely to act on these thoughts.

Shields was prescribed the antidepressant Paxil by her doctor who believed her postpartum to be attributed to a drop in her estrogen and progesterone levels. She also used therapy in addition to medication to treat her condition. She said that the combination of medicine and counseling, along with help from family and friends to take care of the baby, was the reason she was able to successfully overcome her condition. She believes that therapy helped her understand and deal with her condition, but without the medicine, she wouldn’t have had the ability to focus and listen.

She came under fire from fellow actor Tom Cruise after he criticized her use of an antidepressants to aid in her postpartum struggle. Cruise, a member of the Church of Scientology, told “Today� host Matt Lauer that drugs simply mask problems and a change in diet and exercise would have been a more beneficial approach to address the problem. Shields retorted by saying that she guessed Cruise had never suffered from postpartum depression. “If someone had diabetes, we would say take insulin,� said Shields in a later interview. “Your biochemistry is just out of whack.�

Shields urges women who suffer from the symptoms of postpartum depression to seek medical help right away. Dr. Mohammed Ahmed of the Psyclinic agrees that immediate treatment is the answer but it’s important to seek the right medical attention as quickly as possible.

“Only a trained psychiatrist is able to identify the disorder, measure its severity and prescribe the best treatment,� says Dr. Ahmed, who has more than 15 years of experience treating women with postpartum depression. “Seeking psychiatric help immediately is the best way to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby.�

Dr. Ahmed also stresses that new mothers should not feel embarrassed to get help. Postpartum is very common but the best news is that it is treatable. Seeking help now is the best thing not only for the mother but for the entire family. Q

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS Postpartum depression may be mistaken for baby blues at ďŹ rst — but the signs and symptoms are more intense and last longer, eventually interfering with your ability to care for your baby and handle other daily tasks.

Symptoms usually develop within the ďŹ rst few weeks after giving birth, but may begin later — up to six months after birth.

ith the turn of the season, it is time to say goodbye to summer shorts and sleeveless shifts and to welcome in cozy layers and rich fall colors. From the wide legged trouser and large hoops earrings of the 70s to the 80s crop tops with high-waisted jeans, trends come and go, but the simplicity of being aware of which trends flatter your body type makes all the difference in wearing something well. And, remember, not all trends should be worn at the same time!

Watching the fall fashion runway shows around the globe showcases a major comeback of the “Bling Ring.” After seasons of large, oversized jewelry with minimal design, there is now a return to the sparkly, feminine pieces like the jewelry from Prada and Balenciaga. Big earrings are back to make a bold statement as well.

When shopping for shoes, the words for the season are “Lady Loafers”, “Boots” and “Furry Feet.” The stiletto heel (made famous by Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent) has been the “it” shoe for the past several seasons, but now it’s time for comfort and wearability. Many designers like Bally, Stella McCartney, and Miu Miu have taken the Stacked-Kitten Heel to a whole new level. Recently, on a nice sunny Saturday, I decided to go shopping with my best friend to celebrate our weight loss journey. It is such a great feeling to shop as a reward.

I selected a dress and wandered in the jewelry aisle trying to find a matching pair of earrings. My friend saw me looking puzzled so she tried to make some suggestions. In her desperate attempts to help me make up my mind, she realized that my mind was set on one color only.

Royal blue. It looks nice on my skin tone, is found throughout my closet and it has always been my first choice. I am starting to wonder if there is a specific link between color and personality.

awhile then depression started creeping back again with the stresses at work,� said Julianna. The stress was so much to handle that she isolated herself and eventually shut down. Then she went to see Dr. Ahmed at PsyClinic who tried her on different medication. “I would do well for awhile then I would relapse,� said Julianna. “I got tired of the commitment of taking pills daily. I wanted to be free from meds.�

hether you’re a seasoned runner or are just starting out, wearing appropriate shoes is non-negotiable if you plan to run consistently.

Wearing worn-out shoes is one of the most common causes of injuries, so shoes should be replaced every 300 to 500 miles. For your very first pair, it’s recommended to get fitted at a specialty store (Fleet Feet and Luke’s Locker are great local options in the Houston area). It’s always good to shop local and support your community, but if you’re on a budget, you also can often find your chosen pair of shoes at a lower cost on sites such as runningwarehouse.com and shoebuy.com.

Once you’re at a running store, a salesperson can help you determine the shape of your feet — flat, neutral or high arches — to determine what type of shoes you should choose. Flat feet usually have fallen arches, which means they are flexible and likely to over pronate in an inward rolling motion. High-arched feet are basically the opposite, being more defined, rigid and prone to supination, or landing on the outside edges of the feet while running. Neutral feet tend to fall right in the middle.

With such a wide range in foot shapes and running habits, most shoe companies have produced shoe models to accommodate all runners and foot types. Flat-footed runners are often best suited for higher stability shoes to prevent

over pronation. Neutral runners are often able to run in many types of shoes but tend to go for ones with moderate stability.

Lastly, runners with high arches tend to go for shoes with more cushioning, equipped with midsole padding and flexibility.

Local running store staff members often offer to watch customers run on a treadmill or outside. This will provide them with a visual gait analysis of your foot strike, an integral part of selecting the right shoe. This is a great tool that allows runners to address any injury- or form-related issues, and stores often work closely with podiatrists, physical therapists and sports chiropractors to be able to refer customers if necessary.

Once you’ve determined your best type of shoe, try on several pairs. Some runners end up having to size up by half a size from everyday shoes to provide a bit more wiggle room in the toe box.

At the same time, you’ll want to make sure your foot is secure and not likely to slip around.

Although it requires some trial and error, you should know once you’ve found the ideal shoe. It should feel natural and comfortable when working with your natural foot shape and biomechanics. Great shoes with a great fit will keep your feet happy for the long road ahead of you. Q

What is the best way to apply foundation? I’ve heard a lot of buzz about airbrush makeup.

The best way to apply foundation or makeup base (including primers) all depends on the texture of the base. There are certain foundations that simply look smoother when applied with a brush; however, in the end, it’s always the best option to pat the base into the skin with either fingertips or a sponge. Remember, using fingertips will provide warmth to the skin and allow the product to move around in a more fluid manner. If using a sponge, be sure to purchase one that is latex-free. Many people are allergic to latex and besides, these sponges absorb about 50 percent of the product anyway…so you end up using it far more quickly. Airbrush is fun, but not my favorite. It’s like spray-painting a car or home. When you spray the face, you must be extra cautious and use a fabulous foundation formula or your face will look like plaster putty. Be good to your skin! The simple technique of tapping and stippling in a pressing motion will always work best!

Are there any matte lipsticks that will NOT dry out my lips?

Yes. This is a fun one to explore. My personal favorite can be found at By Terry Cosmetics.

Should I be wearing a powder to set my makeup?

Makeup should only be set with a powder if someone needs to prolong the wear or if the complexion has a tendency to become oily. You may be one of millions of Americans who suffer from occasional insomnia.

In fact, difficulty with sleeping has become one of the most pervasive societal complaints today, along with weight gain.

Most common causes for insomnia include hectic lifestyle, stress, uncommon working schedule, physical illness and depression. According to SleepEducation.com, insomnia is more common than most people might think. Just how common is insomnia among American adults? SLEEPY TIME AROMAS By far, the most popular aroma for sleeping is lavender followed by vanilla and chamomile. Many massage therapists use a combination of these aromas in conjunction with a massage session because they are universally relaxing and pleasant.

Lavender in particular is gaining respect among researchers who study the science of sleep. A recent study involving young men and women at Wesleyan University in Connecticut discovered that lavender could be used to improve their quality of sleep. The participants in the study sniffed either lavender or distilled water each night before sleeping. Chamomile (botanical name Anthemis Nobilis) is considered a natural sedative, very helpful when used for insomnia. Chamomile tea is a common bedtime hot drink of choice because of its calming and soothing effects. The aroma and sedative effect of the undiluted Roman Chamomile essential oil is much more powerful and fragrant than a chamomile tea. When diffused with a steam diffuser, Roman Chamomile essential oil can be safely used to help soothe fussy babies and toddlers.

Vanilla might seem better suited to the kitchen but not so where aromatherapy is concerned. According to Livestrong.com, in 1991, the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York tested the effects of five fragrances on 85 patients undergoing a magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, scan. Of the fragrances tested, a vanilla-like aroma, Heliotropin, was rated the most relaxing.

Patients exposed to the Heliotropin reported 63 percent less anxiety and claustrophobia than those were not exposed to fragrance. The study prompted Sloan-Kettering to include vanilla fragrances as a standard part of MRI scans. Because of its relaxing properties, vanilla scents are commonly used in bath products and candles to help promote restful sleep.

SETTING THE STAGE FOR RESTFUL SLUMBER Regardless of which aroma is most pleasing to your personal senses, it is important to implement a bedtime routine that is calming and allows you to unwind and relax, especially if you deal with occasional sleeplessness.

began suffering from insomnia in my teen years,” said Sandra Romero. “I had a lot of problems at home. That’s when it started.” Now in her 50s, Sandra still struggles with this common sleep disorder.

The National Sleep Foundation reports 48 percent of Americans experience insomnia occasionally and 22 percent experience it almost every night. The condition affects more women than men and the elderly suffer more than younger individuals.

Insomnia is defined as the inability to sleep even when you give yourself the opportunity for sleep.

Baylor College of Medicine Sleep Medicine Specialist Dr. Philip Alapat explains it this way; “There is no blood test to identify insomnia. It is a subjective complaint. If somebody reports difficulty falling asleep or maintaining sleep, they may have insomnia and women tend to complain more. We also recognize as we age the sleep quality is not as good.”

Marketing specialists Theresa Quintanilla can certainly relate to Dr. Alapat’s assessment. “It started three or four years ago,” she said. “At the time, I had a lot of stress and anxiety. It was certainly situational, job changes, economic challenges and worrying about my children.”

This is not unusual. Much of insomnia is related to stressful situations.

“Unlike other sleep disorders, insomnia has a high correlation with mood disorders,” said Dr. Robert Castriotta, sleep expert at

the UT Health Medical School and Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. “Both anxiety and depression are the most common. But this is not to infer that people who have insomnia all have a psychiatric disorder.”

Even though insomnia is fairly common, the consequences of not getting a good night sleep are serious. “It includes susceptibility to infections, cancer risk, cognitive dysfunction, increased cardiovascular disease, and depressed immunity,” warned Dr. Castriotta.

Romero feels her lack of sleep affected her immune system.

She was recently diagnosed with herpes zoster, better known as shingles. “The doctor in the emergency room told me it had to do with my dysfunctional immune system because I only get a few hours of sleep. I have tried to get to a sleep specialist but it is difficult in our current medical system,” she said.

Dr. Alapat notes that few medical professionals are trained in sleep medicine. “It is in its infancy and primary care physicians don’t know a lot about it, so a lot of people self medicate,” he said.

Clinical and Sleep Health psychologist Rubin Naiman, PhD, at the Arizona institute of Integrative Medicine, has found sleep medications don’t work well for insomnia and neither do over the counter sleep aids.

“In our practice we deal with mind and body,” said Dr. Naiman. “It is a psychological and physiological problem. We continued...

approach it primarily from a psychological perspective. When we look at the patient, we look at the body, mind and bed.

We believe sleeping pills don’t work. They don’t significantly improve sleep. What they do is impact memory. You get up in the morning thinking you slept well but you might have had fragmented multiple awakenings. You just don’t remember.”

Many doctors agree, behavioral cognitive therapy works better to help insomnia sufferers. Dr. Castriotta believes behavioral therapy is just as good if not better than medication. “It depends on the cause of insomnia,” he said. “If it is related to a traumatic event, and you have acute insomnia, we might treat with hypnotics to prevent it from becoming chronic insomnia, but generally behavioral therapy works well.”

“I spent a lot of money on counselors, but what really helped me is meditation and breathing exercises,” said Ms. Quintanilla.

Everyone is different but Dr. Naiman believes you can’t think your way to sleep. “How do we let go of our waking mind? It is a spiritual process, an act of faith,” he said. “In Greek mythology, the God of sleep was Hypnos and his twin brother was Thanatos, the God of peaceful death. In many spiritual traditions, there is a critical relationship between sleeping and dying and when you say it is hard to let go, it is like a small death that has to happen. You have to give up control.”

The National Institute of Health recommended in 2005 that cognitive behavioral therapy should be the first line treatment for chronic insomnia before doctors prescribe medications. Q

Hit the weights before the cardio. When we plan to hit the weights after a hard run, we’re likely to skip it because we’re tired and feel like we’ve already put in the work (rightfully so). Losing fat requires building metabolism-boosting muscle, and when you have more energy, you’ll be able to lift heavier weights and reap more muscle-building benefits to help you burn fat in places like the belly.

You are what you eat. Food definitely plays a role when it comes to muscle definition, and sugar is a major culprit in hindering results. Remember, the key is everything in moderation, so make sure to sub out some sugary snacks for alternatives that are higher in protein. Skip the afternoon soda and go for some plain, low-fat Greek yogurt with fresh berries instead.

Think outside the box. In other words, don’t solely focus on your midsection and neglect all other parts of your body. It takes approximately 250,000 crunches to burn just one pound of fat, so it’s important to focus on strengthening muscles such as your hamstrings, glutes and quadriceps. These muscles not only need a lot of energy to move, but working them will enable you to burn more calories post-workout.

Get plenty of sleep. Studies have shown that people who sleep five hours or less a night can quickly pack on the pounds, as they’re likely to be snacking on processed foods after hours. Upping quantity and quality of sleep will promote fat loss and is likely to help you make smarter food choices because you won’t be feeling foggy and lethargic late in the day.

Be patient. Be consistent. Be strong. Before you know it, your belly fat will be tamed and toned. Q

It offers a myriad of travel possibilities, from an art lover’s tour of Renaissance masterpieces to an epicurean’s sampling of the cuisine and wine of each region.

With so many options, we’ve highlighted some our favorite places to visit in Italy.

Famous grand canal from Rialto Bridge

ROME Called the “Eternal City,” Italy’s capital is packed with art and history. Once the heart of the Roman Empire, some of the best Roman ruins, including the Roman Forum, Colosseum, and Pantheon, are located in the city. Close to the Roman Forum, the Musei Capitolini displays classical and Renaissance art. Other excellent museums to visit include the Museo Nazionale Romano, Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj, and Palazzo Barberini.

The nearby Vatican is home to the grandiose St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel, and Raphael’s Rooms. The Vatican museums also exhibit a huge collection of masterpieces, including Egyptian and Assyrian, Greek and Roman, and Renaissance art.

To really soak up local life and culture, seek the quieter moments in Rome. Relax in a piazza, sit on the Spanish Steps and watch the sunset, or browse in the street markets of Piazza Campo de’ Fiori, Via Sannio, or Porta Portese. Before leaving Rome, don’t forget to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain for luck.

VENICE The island city of Venice is a charming collection of alleys, bridges, and canals. Venice’s grand central square is the Piazza San Marco, bordered by the Byzantine and Romanesque Basilica di San Marco, Gothic pink and white marble Palazzo Ducale, Campanile bell tower, and Museo Correr.

Near the Piazza San Marco is the Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice’s best art museum, which features masterpieces by Renaissance artists like Titian and Tintoretto. Art lovers can also head to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection to view a selection of modern art, including works by Picasso, Braque, and Dalí. The Gothic Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari church near the Rialto Bridge, Venice’s oldest bridge, also features Renaissance masterpieces.

The nearby islands of Murano and Burano are pleasant day trips from Venice. Murano is famous for its glass, and the Museo del Vetro displays exquisite pieces. Many of the glass factories also offer glass-blowing demonstrations. TUSCANY Tuscany is known for its rolling hills, cypress trees, olive groves, and vineyards. This is a region famous for its red wine, including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Drop-in wine tastings are allowed in many wineries, although appointments are recommended for tours.

The Tuscan countryside and hill towns draw travelers seeking a more leisurely pace. One prime example of a hill town is San Gimignano, a walled town that has preserved 14 medieval towers. Medieval frescoes can be seen at the Collegiata, a Romanesque cathedral, and the Sant’Agostino Church. The Palazzo Comunale houses

courtly frescoes and the Musei Civici. Climbing up the Torre Grossa will reward you with fine views of the town and countryside.

Southeast of San Gimignano, Siena is one of Italy’s best preserved medieval cities. The thirteenth century Duomo, Siena’s Gothic cathedral, is famous for its mosaic marble floor and statues by Michelangelo and Bernini. The Palazzo Pubblico looms over the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo. Inside, you can find the Museo Civico and climb up the Torre del Mangia for excellent views.

family that supported many Renaissance artists, including the Medici Chapels and the Palazzo Vecchio. The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa rises west of Florence.

AMALFI COAST The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline from Sorrento to Salerno. Here, sheer rocky cliffs overlook a turquoise sea and colorful villages perch on hills perfumed by lemons. Many of the historical structures illustrate an interesting blend of Gothic, Norman, Moorish and Byzantine styles. At the farthest end of the coast, the town of Paestum contains a collection of Greek temples and an archaeological museum presents artifacts found in the area.

LAKE DISTRICT AND THE DOLOMITES North of Milan, picturesque towns, luxurious nineteenth century villas, and colorful gardens line Lake Como. To the west, elegant resorts

and camellias and azaleas grace the shores of Lake Maggiore. Far to the east, medieval towns surround Lake Garda. Located on a small peninsula at the bottom of the lake, Sirmione features the Rocca Scaligera medieval castle and cobblestone streets wind beneath medieval arches. Along the eastern shore are the towns of Bardolino, well-known for its red wine, Punta San Vigilia, and Malcesine, where you can learn to windsurf and sail. At the northern end of the lake is the pretty resort town of Riva del Garda.

For an active holiday, head to the Dolomites, striking gray cliffs towering over green meadows and alpine villages. During the summer, dozens of hiking trails can be accessed from the towns of Castelrotto, Cortina d’Ampezzo, and Madonna di Campiglio. In the winter, the area becomes a skiing and snowboarding paradise, boasting over 750 miles of ski runs.

oncur was delighted to visit the Egyptian consulate of Houston and meet with the Consul General Khaled Radi who expressed interest in our Travel section featuring Egypt last issue.

During the meeting, Mr. Radi discussed with Concur’s editor Egypt’s current success and future aspirations. On August 6, 2015, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi presided over inaugural ceremonies for the expanded Suez Canal, an $8.6 billion project financed entirely by the Egyptian people and completed two years ahead of schedule. Heads of state and foreign dignitaries from around the world, including French President Francois Hollande, King Abdullah of Jordan, Swiss Vice President Johann Schneider-Ammann and UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon, were on hand to celebrate the grand opening of the new 45-mile channel and deepening of the old waterway.

During his remarks, President El Sisi underscored the importance of this landmark project, saying, “The splendor of this new canal not only represents a formidable feat of engineering, but has also given the Egyptian people confidence and demonstrated to the entire world what they are capable of accomplishing. The new canal is one step on a long road the Egyptian people have embarked on to realize their aspirations and ambitions.”

The new Suez Canal will expand domestic economy and bolster Egypt’s role as a major global commerce hub. The modernization of this strategically important waterway will increase shipping capacity, allow two-way maritime traffic for the first time and reduce waiting ship times from 11 to three hours. The dramatic increase in volume will make the Suez Canal an even more attractive route for global shipping.

Egypt is bouncing back as a land of never-ending wonders.
