Dear Visitors and Friends in Columbus, The Columbus Chamber of Commerce proudly provides the Visitors Guide that introduces our town and community to visitors, newcomers,

and even some who have lived here a while. There’s hardly enough space to tell all the stories of a town that has such a long history; so it makes sense that the guide be considered as an appetizer. Spending time in Columbus

would be the main course. No matter what you are interested in, Columbus is the perfect weekend getaway. For the outdoor enthusiasts, you can spend a day on the river with a kayak or canoe. Relieve some stress with a round of golf. Come out to one of our bike races or 5k runs. If you love history, Columbus has over 100 Texas historical markers. You can arrange to see some beautiful historical homes. Our recently renovated courthouse, one of the finest in Texas, graces the downtown square. The unique 1886 Opera House is across from the courthouse on the southwest corner; it offers dinner theatres and a venue for special events. Pick up a driving tour map that will lead you to a bevy of historic treasures with radio commentary. There is the unique Confederate Memorial Museum and an event to celebrate it all in November- the Columbus Folk Fest and the Live Oaks and Dead Folks Cemetery Tour. We have wonderful sites to see such as the Live Oak Arts Center, the third largest

oak tree in Texas, and one of only two known Santa Claus Museums. If you are looking to relax and shop, we have wonderful shops, clothing boutiques, antiques, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, a Farmers’ Market, and a spa. If you are looking to make Columbus home, we are small town Texas. American flags line our streets in support of our country, our schools, our children, and we delight in being hospitable. We have many community resources including our Columbus Community Hospital, the Nesbitt Memorial Library, and a sports academy. Welcome to Columbus! Stafford Opera House Robert Stafford built the Second Empire-style Stafford Opera House in 1886. Originally, it housed the Stafford Bank downstairs and a flat-floored opera house upstairs. The white two-story house next door was the house Bob Stafford built for his family. Colorado County Courthouse The courthouse is the 4th courthouse and was built in 1890. It is a combination Classical Revival and Greek Revival style. The central bell tower and roof were destroyed in the 1909 storm. They were replaced with the current central domed Tiffany-style skylight. Water Tower The water tower was built in 1883 and has 32-inch walls. It served as water tower and firehouse until 1912. It now houses the Confederate Museum operated by the Shropshire-Upton Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Ehrenwerth Building This is the dominant building on the west side of Milam Street. The 1873 two-story commercial structure was built of bricks from a local kiln in Italianate style. It now houses the Silver Barn.

Columbus Lifestyle 2015 Abram Alley Log Cabin The two-room cabin was built in 1836 after the Alleys returned from the “Runaway Scrape.” It is constructed of oak logs found near the Alley property at the Atoscosita Crossing south of Columbus. It was moved to Columbus and restored in 1976.

Ta t e - S e n f t e n b e r g - B r a n d o n House Phocian Tate as a 4-room Greek Revival house built it in 1867. The Brandons added a 2nd story and porches to create the Victorian Stick style with Queen Anne features we see today.

6

3

Mewes-Gant House This house was built in nearby Alleyton by Rudolph Mewes (pronounced “Mavis”). In 1978, it was brought from the Gants and moved to Columbus and restored by preservationist Laura Ann Rau. The original German stenciling can still be seen on the walls of this quaint little house.

Prairie Street Heritage House Built in 1860’s of cypress wood on land owned by Robert Robson, this charming house is now a tea room and bed and breakfast. Contact the owners to make your reservations.

4 Townsend-West House This house was built by Marcus and Annie Townsend in 1890 and is Victorian in style with Eastlake embellishments. Townsend was a state representative and senator and sponsored the bill to buy the Alamo. Thurmond and Erma West bought the house in 1906. Call B & B owners for interior tour.

5

Dilue Rose Harris House Ira and Dilue Rose Harris built the house in 1858. It is of concrete construction and boasts a basement that originally had a dirt floor. Dilue participated in the “Runaway Scrape” at the end of the Texas Revolution and wrote her “reminiscences.”

7 Brunson Building Charles Brunson built this building in 1891 and used it as a saloon until about 1919. He built the adjacent building in 1896. It retains much of the original Victorian styling.

Old Brick Store Built in 1850, this is the oldest brick building in Columbus. It was owned and occupied by Thomas A. Harris, a physician, from 1850 until 1867. From 1912 until 1979, the Fehrenkamps as a grocery store operated it.

Hosted at the local cemetery each fall; First weekend in November. Sponsored by the Nesbitt Memorial Library www.columbustexas.net/ library The legendary and century-old feuds of Colorado County are so fascinating that someone once wrote a book about them. Annually, the Nesbitt Memorial Library conducts the “Live Oaks & Dead Folks Cemetery Tour,” during which

casts of characters who lived through such memorable times spring to life through the eyes of history and the voices of local re-enactors. Participate in the tour and you’ll meet the ghosts of Columbus’ past whose strange, heroic and sometimes tragic tales will have you wiping away tears of both joy and sorrow. This event is a fun and unique way to learn about Texas history, while celebrating those who lived through it.

This is a challenging nine-hole course measuring less than 6000 feet. Seven out of nine holes have water in play. Six out of nine holes have out of bounds in play. The Columbus Golf Club is city property and is managed by Pro Tim Meuis. The course is closed on Tuesdays. Hours of play are 8 a.m. to just before dark. The grounds of Columbus Country Club were first developed by Orlando A. Miller in 1903 as a horseman’s club with bridle paths throughout the estate. It wasn’t long before the land eventually gave way to the sport of golf. Over the years, some of golf’s greatest architects have laid hands on Columbus Country Club. Originally designed by Tom Bendelow in 1903, the golf course at Columbus Country Club has seen the likes of HS Colt, course designer of Pine Valley, Dick Wilson, designer of Bay Hill in Florida, and Geoffrey Cornish of Olympia Hills’ fame. But it was Donald Ross who has had the most influence on the course’s character and overall design. Ross renovated Columbus Country Club several times between 1915 and 1940. Along with his associates Wendell Miller and Orrin Smith, Ross has seven golf courses in the world’s Top 100 Rankings.

The historic Stafford Opera House The historic Stafford Opera House was built in 1886 by Robert Earl Stafford and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Nicholas J. Clayton, Galveston architect, and one of Texas’ most outstanding architects of the 19th century, designed the structure. Stafford built the building to house his bank on the first floor and a flat-floored theater on the second floor. Live theater was presented in this building from 1886 to 1916. Over the years, the Opera House

has been used as a bank, car dealerships, apartments, roller skating rink, department store and offices. Today it is owned by Columbus Historical Preservation Trust, Inc. (CHPT), who restored the building in the 1970s and now leases the first floor offices to the Chamber of Commerce and others. The second floor serves as the perfect venue for dinner theater productions and music series as well as weddings, receptions, seminars and group functions.

Our courthouse through the ages The present Colorado County courthouse is the third courthouse to stand on the same site, which has been known through the years as the courthouse square in Columbus. Since its construction from 1889-91, it has been a center of activity for the city and county as well as a tourist attraction. According to information compiled by the Colorado County Historical Commission, in 1845 and 1846, the commissioners’ court was meeting in the home of W.B. Dewees. On Oct. 12, 1846, Asa Townsend and Dewees were the commissioners appointed to inquire into the expenses of building a courthouse in Columbus, and were assigned to report on their proceedings at the next regular term of the court. In a special session that took place on Jan. 30, 1847, N.H. Fisher was given a contract by the court to build a courthouse for the sum of $950. The courthouse was to be 33 feet in length and 20 feet wide, while the first story was to be 9 feet and the second story 8 feet in height. The foundation was to be post oak, ash weather boarding and flooring and cottonwood shingles. The courtroom was designed to be 22 feet by 20 feet with clerk’s rooms on both floors measuring 10 feet by 14 feet, with a 6-foot wide and 20-foot long second floor hallway with two jury rooms, both 10 feet by 16 feet. The building was to have

12 windows, each having 18 lights of 8 inch by 10-inch glass. Fisher’s specifications laid out a small, 640 square foot, two-story courthouse, with two rooms downstairs and three rooms upstairs. The courthouse was to be completed within six months. By 1852, the county commissioners came to the agreement that there was a lack of space in the existing courthouse and a need for a jail. On May 18 of that year, the commissioners’ court met and accepted the plans drafted by K.P. Boyce, who had been employed and authorized to prepare plans for a jail and new courthouse connected therewith. The plan for the jail required that it be two stories high and located at the west end of the existing courthouse. The new courthouse and jail were completed in 1857 in the middle of the square located between Milam and Spring streets. This time, the courthouse building was constructed of concrete and sandstone rocks on the location of the present building and was enclosed by a split rail fence. On July 21, 1909, a hurricane swept through the county and nearly wrecked the courthouse. The building had sustained minimal damage during the Galveston hurricane of 1900. However, the hurricane that ravaged Columbus nine years later

would not be so lenient on the courthouse. The tower and much of the roof were blown off and rain saturated nearly every room. In the early 1950s, more space was needed, so simple, one-story wings were added to the southeast and southwest corners of the building. In 1960, the declining conditions of the stained glass dome over the district courtroom posed a hazard to those beneath it, so it was enclosed behind a false ceiling. In 1963, representatives of Columbia Pictures, shooting the film “Baby the Rain Must Fall,” asked the commissioners’ court for permission to cut down five of the magnolias in the town square so that there would be a better view of the courthouse. The community responded so strongly against the request that the trees stayed and the producers worked around them during the filming of the motion picture. The present courthouse was officially recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1969. In 1976, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Self-guided tours of the courthouse are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
