God is good!
... even during tough times, He’s always good BY DEBBIE AYLESWORTH Editor/Publisher
D
r. Kevin Muilenburg and his wife Kelley were called to ministry in Rockport 25 years ago this August. Kevin has been the minister of Coastal Oaks Church for that entire 25 years. They have two children, Karissa and Cameron, who both graduated from Coastal Oaks Christian School. Karissa is now 33 and Cameron, 30, is married to Alexis. They all live in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Karissa is an office manager for an environmental waste auditing company. Cameron is a freelance videographer and travels the world. The Muilenburgs left Rockport like many other families when Hurricane Harvey began to morph into hurricane status after a tropical storm beginning Aug. 17, 2017. They traveled to Fort Worth to Kelley’s sister’s home. Harvey made landfall in Rockport Friday, Aug. 25 as a Category 4 hurricane. Like many others, they watched the coverage from a distance and prayed for people and homes left behind.
“When we left, our youth minister, Billy McDonnel and his wife Cayla stayed, but they were in a concrete house with the Scott Robbins’ family, so I knew they would be OK,” Kelley said. They received a call from Billy after the storm but he had to travel past the Copano bridge toward Lamar to get cell reception. “We asked about the church condition first,” Kelley said. “They reported there were a few bricks missing on the gym. Cayla didn’t want to tell me about the damage to our house and hesitantly said, ‘There’s been some damage on one end of your house.’ “We were in church Sunday in Fort Worth when we got a picture of our home through text. The whole end where our bedroom and the guest bedroom was wide open.” Kelley continued, “ Right then in church, we shared the picture and the minister stopped and prayed for us, our community and our church.” The Muilenburgs headed home Tuesday after Harvey’s visit (Friday).

They went to the church first. “There were more than a few bricks missing, more like most of the bricks on the entire side of the gym,” Kelley said. “When we saw the church gym, we knew we had more damage at our home. We were so glad to see people we loved were ok.” Billy and Cayla wanted to go with them to see their home, but they said they would do this on their own and it was “God’s house” anyway. “We opened up the back door to the kitchen
from the garage. Kevin couldn’t get it open much for all the insulation and sheet rock on the floor. The damage was throughout the entire house. The entire house was covered in insulation, debris and sheet rock....all our furniture was covered in it. The entire ceiling collapsed through the entire house. Once we walked through the house, trudging through the damp junk, opening doors, we were seeing what we could salvage. We saw enough to know it was really bad. When we

got to the bedroom and our bathroom, Kevin said, ‘Look! We have skylights now’ - the entire roof was gone. “We checked out the whole house. It was devastation all around. We walked outside and our church friends were waiting to hug us. “The back storage shed and swing Kevin had built were all thrown all over the back and our side yard....just strewn everywhere....a disaster. We had to take a deep breath and deal with it.” For the next two weeks the Muilenburgs emptied out their home. They threw away what could not be salvaged. They estimated they lost 80-90% of their furniture. “The big pieces, upholstered pieces were all lost. All the bedding and mattresses were lost although I saved quilts passed down from my grandparents by washing them. “ It was strange the things that survived. In my kitchen....cabinets were fine so friends came and packed up and moved those items out,” she said. “We had people/teams from all over the country – people we didn’t know – come and help demo our house. It was amazing!” Kelley lost most of her clothes, but washed and salvaged what she could of her and Kevin’s clothes. Their dresser drawers had swollen so much from the moisture, it was difficult if almost impossible to get some things out. “I did laundry for two days with the help of two of my best friends where we were staying,” Kelley said. “I had boxes of my home décor... things I would switch out during the year and I was able to salvage a bunch.” “Even as we came back into town, we were checking on our church friends. Then we went around neighborhoods, checking on people, seeing if there was anything we could do,” Kelley said. “Kevin prayed with people and they were so open to it. When disaster strikes, those spiritual walls come down.....we didn’t have anyone turn us down for prayer. I didn’t know these people. Just strangers checking on strangers.” Kevin said, “With all the fences down, you got to know your neighbors in the neighborhood well. You could visit more easily. We kinda hated

to put fences back up, but we have a dog.” People were going above and beyond to help people even though they might be the one that needed the help. Many people were trying to lend a hand. For nine months the Muilenburgs lived in an apartment offered by a church member. Kelley said, “It was close enough to the house to check on it everyday. I wouldn’t want to live through it again, but God was faithful and I can see his hand in so many ways. “The insurance did settle and although looking back, they probably didn’t pay as much as they should have, God made it possible for us to rebuild our home. We got it done!” On May 11, 2018 - nine months after the hurricane, they were able to move back home. “It wasn’t finished,” Kelley said, “but mostly finished and we were so excited to sleep in our bed in our own home. It was so nice to be back in our own home.” Kelley’s vocation is an interior designer. She and her partner Denise Walker own and operate Boardwalk Design Group. They have been designers and consultants since 2013.

“I never dreamed I would be able to design my own home,” Kelley said. “I couldn’t afford something like that. That’s the biggest silver lining in this whole ordeal. I got to see it gutted and start over. I got to design my home from the floor to the roof....to get to do that was a dream come true for me. I do it for clients all the time, but getting to do it for myself was amazing. God poured that blessing on me and I wasn’t even praying for it. “We are so happy with it. Looking around one day, Kevin said something that was so sweet. He said, ‘Honey, when we have gone to fancy hotels it has always been so nice and now our home is like one of those fancy hotels.’ “He appreciates all the finishes I made. It’s our dream home. I decorated it and designed it as French farmhouse style. I would think, ‘if Joanna Gaines was designing this, what would she do?’ I would stand in a room... ‘where would she put shiplap in this room?’ We have three shiplap walls in the house. We added an archway and turned two bedrooms into one big master suite.” When asked what she would want people to know about her experience? She readily replied, “Everything happens for a reason. Out of our entire neighborhood, the neighbor behind us and ours were the worst. “I would never have the opportunity to design my own home and that shows the faithfulness of God, Kelley said. “He is faithful, no matter what happens. He is faithful. “We want Him to get the glory in our home and we want anyone who enters to sense His presence, His love and His peace. Hopefully, they will.”

ike sand through the sculptor’s hands, it was the days of Texas SandFest 2019. “We are anticipating our guests will have a fabulous time with the beautiful weather, amazing art and all the fun things to do will fill their day with good times,’ said Texas SandFest Executive Director Lisa Shelton. April 26-28 thousands of people from around the world gathered on the beaches of Port Aransas to view sand creations at the largest Native-Sand Sand Sculpture competition in the United States. More than 35,000 people were expected to attend. On the Texas SandFest Facebook page, an attendee posted “Great atmosphere. Really cool sand sculptures.” Eighteen master and five semi-pro sculptors grabbed their tools to create elaborate works of art in the sand. Sculptors set their pedestal of sand then Summer 2019
filled it up with sand like a giant sandbox. Using water and tools like a shovel, square trowel, pool trowel, palette knife, knife, popsicle stick, spoon, paint brush and a straw, they formed sculptures limited only by the extent of the imagination. Once completed, the creations were judged. The Duo Masters’ sculptures are judged by the Solo Masters and the Solo Masters’ sculptors are judged by the Duo Masters. Master sculptors judge the semi-pros. People attending SandFest have the opportunity to select their favorites. The People’s Choice Award is presented to the favorite Duo and Solo sculptures. A box is placed in front of each sculpture. People place their votes in the boxes. A portion of funds raised at this year’s event are donated to organizations in the community. Among the ways to contribute is with a purchase of hot dog off a famous grill brought

in just for this event. This year, Johnsonville’s Big Taste Grill was in Port Aransas. The 20-foot-tall, 65-footlong, 6 feet in diameter grill is owned by the famous Wisconsin sausage and bratwurst company. The grill features a lid weighing 6,000 pounds and is capable of cooking 750 brats at a time on its 40 square feet grilling surface. An estimated 2,500 brats are prepared in an hour. Since 1995, the largest grill in the world has traveled the country to raise money for local nonprofits. To date, more than $4 million has been donated to charities and disaster relief across the country. One hundred percent of proceeds made will be donated to a local nonprofit chosen by the Texas SandFest Board of Directors. According to crystalsand.org, sand sculpting is the oldest form of sculpting in the world. The site dates sand sculpting back to prehistoric times. Though there isn’t much evidence to substantiate, it is believed that the Egyptians created a sand version of the pyramids and another sand sculpture is said to have been built in the 14th century by an Indian poet. The first documented sand sculptures were constructed in Atlantic City, New Jersey in the 19th century. As viewers of the art form showed their appreciation by giving money to the sculptors, more and more picked up tools and showcased their creations. The art of sand sculpting continued to grow in popularity into the 20th century. Soon, beach resort areas began having competitions and offering prizes. California is credited with the start of modern-day sand sculpting in the 1970s. Sand Sculptors International was established and set the standard for sand sculpting. Today, sand sculpting competitions are held around the world. Texas SandFest began in 1997 and soon grew to the 3-day festival bringing people and sculptors from around the world to Port Aransas.

emma Anthony moved from the San Antonio area to Rockport in March 2016. She visited the area, with her family, twice per year for 10 years. The last visit in 2015 morphed into “let’s move” to Rockport. Gemma hails from Trinidad and Tobago to New York City (what a culture shock). She quickly acclimated herself to her new country, city and its way of life. Living in NYC was tough, especially applying and waiting for approval for an Alien Registration card, commonly referred to as the Green Card. Upon receiving her Green Card, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps (another culture shock), where she served for more than 20 years. While serving in the Corps, she worked as an Administrator and Drill Instructor at Parris Island, SC, where she trained young civilians to become fighting Marines. All her leadership skills, training and life lessons were gained while serving her new country. Her spouse, Freddie Anthony, also a retired Marine, received Permanent Change of Station Orders to Iselin, NJ as the Non-Commissioned Officer of Monmouth County. Gemma followed him to the recruiting field. When she retired from the Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, NC, where she served as the First Sergeant of Headquarters and Service
Company, she and her family moved to San Antonio. After spending some muchneeded time with her family, Gemma decided to take up the challenge of studying for and taking the Real Estate exam. While in San Antonio, she served as a Realtor with Realty Executives. In Rockport, Gemma is actively working as a Realtor with Keller Williams Coastal Bend. She also serves as vice president of the Rockport Area Association of Realtors and chairperson of Multiple Listing Service. Gemma is personable and has a “can do” attitude. She has never met a stranger. Always willing to help someone, she is a great person to talk to, has great counsel and has a great love for Jesus Christ. She always remarks that without Him, she is nothing. She attends and is active in St. Paul Baptist Missionary Church. Gemma and Freddie are proud residents of Rockport. They have two beautiful, intelligent daughters and two German Shepherds. Please note that Gemma will serve you well with your Real Estate needs as her slogan says “She knows what it means to serve.”

Since January, the Coastal Bend real estate market is up. Some say it’s never been a better time to buy a house. Coastal property is valuable and retains its value, especially water front locations. Jennifer Park, managing broker at Eling Coastal Real Estate in Rockport, says inventory across the Coastal Bend is picking up as homes are prepared to be put on the market. “The number of homes on the market are up and sales are up,” Park said. “The Rockport Housing Report of January 2019 showed the median price of homes sold in Rockport, which was down 10% from the median of the January 2018 report.” February active listings up 54% from prior February. Closed sales were up 29.4% in February. Days on the market were total 33 days less than February 2018.” As the market picks up, the price distribution showing the largest percentage of homes sold (41.7%) was in the range of $100,000 - $399,999 sales price. Park said, “By summer we should have 75% of rooms available in hotels and condos for occupancy in the summer.” Park continued, “We had a really active first quarter. People are calling daily to buy or sell and we are looking forward to a busy summer.” Beverly Garrett, a Realtor with Century 21 Lee Real Estate in Portland, said communities

have recovered well from the hurricane of 2017. “My businesses and homes in Ingleside, Sinton and Aransas Pass have recovered very nicely. I’ve had a great fourth quarter in 2018 and the 2019 first quarter continued the trend,” Garrett said. “It hasn’t let up yet.” Garrett said there is still a diverse inventory of homes for sale. “I have homes starting low and on up to more expensive homes. Anytime is a good time to buy but especially now while low interest rates are available.” Vacation rentals are ready for Memorial Day and summer guests in Port Aransas, Aransas Pass and Rockport-Fulton. Many condos are prepared for guests and those that aren’t 100% have some availability with the promise of more opening by mid-summer. Realtors give some tips on finding your dream home. Do drive-bys, and do them at different times of the day to get a feel for the neighborhood. Is there a soccer field or baseball diamond close by? You’ll want to know before
it’s too late whether cars will be lined up on your street every weekend. What’s that nearby intersection like during rush hour? Is there a grocery store close by? The more questions you can answer before moving in, the more confident you’ll feel when it’s time to make an offer. Property taxes greatly differ from one community to the next in the Coastal Bend and could have a significant impact on your cost of living. pring has sprung and summer is just around the corner, according to Mike Patterson of A Fishing Fantasy Guide Service and Outfitters in Aransas Pass. “Fishing is the best it has been for years,” Patterson said. “Come on down and let’s fish!” Water temperatures were in the low 70s at press time and will continue to rise as the summer progresses. “Before we know it, we will be begging for some cooler weather,” Jay Watkins said in his monthly Rockport Newsletter in March. “As water temperatures warm into the mid to upper 70s we will start seeing more shoreline slicking from our speckled trout as menhaden and finger mullet start to move into the bays from the Gulf. The spring trout spawn will also begin to

take place and this can be one of the years best opportunities to catch a very special trout. Please practice Catch, Photo and Release of these super fish as they are our bays brood stock. “Spawning occurs in late May and early June around the full moon as water temperatures reach 77 to 80 degrees. This can occur earlier if water temperatures rise due to warmer than normal air temperatures. Watkins concluded, “I am excited about the spring fishing due to all the rainfall we had in 2018 and have continued to receive in 2019. Years following really wet years tend to be very good for us in the speckled trout department.” Fishing in South Texas gives anglers opportunities for freshwater lakes and rivers or bay and deep sea fishing in the Gulf waters lining

Nueces, San Patricio and Aransas Counties. Fish in fresh water sources are bass, a variety of panfish and catfish while saltwater varieties of fish include redfish, flounder, saltwater trout, grouper and the list goes on. Bay fishing and deep sea fishing will offer fishermen an endless choice of tackle, bait and lures to reel in their limits. For fishing, fishing guides, deep sea fishing trips and kayak as well as other water rentals. Each spot in the Coastal Bend offers unique fishing for any type of angler. SPECKLED TROUT The most frequently caught fish in the area is the speckled trout. This fish is often found in large groups along surf and around oyster reefs and shallow grass beds. Speckled trout is popular because of its flaky meat and abundance. While there is no shortage of this fish, the challenge is in selecting the right bait and location for the size of speckled trout desired. Time of year and time of day dictate where to find trout. Early mornings and late afternoons of warm spring and summer months find the speckled trout in the shallow areas of grass flats, oyster reefs and grassy shorelines. As the day heats up, it’s time to swim on to the drop offs and channels. In the colder months, it’s in to the deep holes such as harbors and channels. Locating speckled trout can be as simple as looking for “slicks” on top of the water. While excited, the trout will regurgitate, spilling partially digested fish and oils into the water. The oils float to the top of the water that creates a slick film. The primary fishing area near Aransas Pass is Redfish Bay. Watching the fish cleaning tables at the various boat ramps around Aransas Pass, you will see good catches of redfish, flounder, speckled trout and drum being brought in. The primary focus is fishing the 14,000 acres Summer 2019

of seagrass flats in the area for redfish and the various channels, cuts and deep holes for trout. FLOUNDER What is it called when you go out in the water at night with a light and a pole to look for a camouflage hiding fish? Flounder Gigging! One of the many fishing experiences available in the Coastal Bend area is flounder gigging. A multi-pronged spear at the end of a long pole, usually 8 to 14 feet long, is called a gig. The gig is used to spear the flounder. A light is used to spot the outline of the flounder at the bottom of a shallow area of the bay. Flounder lies on its side and blends in with the ocean floor. It changes its color pattern to match the area it’s in, anything from blackishbrown to light gray or a mottled color. Because of its laterally compressed body, the flounder lies flat on its side and looks up. Being able to blend or burry itself in the ocean floor makes the flounder harder to see by its prey and by fishermen. The southern flounder is the most abundant flatfish in Texas

waters. March through December, the female flounder make their way in to the bay areas to feed after spawning. The majority of flounder caught in the bay are female but male flounder can be found as well though they tend to stay in the Gulf of Mexico year round. In Texas, flounder must be 14 inches long to keep and people are limited to catching five per day. There are several fishing guides offering flounder gigging. With the help of special lighting and a gig, participants look for and spear flounder during a five to six hour night flounder gigging trip. REDFISH Arguably the most sought fish in the bays of the Gulf Coast, the redfish can be found throughout the Coastal Bend. We even have an area referred to as Redfish Bay in Aransas Pass. Catching the redfish can be a challenge. In fact, several tournaments test the skill of the redfish fisherman. Once hooked, the redfish is a fighter challenging the skilled angler. This fish also is wanted for its meat. Redfish are found looking for prey along grass lined shores, deep cuts, flats and reefs. According to www.coastalbendfishing.com, redfish prefer shallow water, one to four feet deep and tend to gravitate to oyster reefs and breaks in shoreline. Large schools of redfish will wander the shorelines eating while preparing to spawn. Late summer is known as the “redfish rodeo.” We are just a little ahead of that, readers, so get your tackle ready. In addition to some of the richest marine habitat in Texas, Aransas Pass and Ingleside on the Bay offer a lot of protected areas that can be fished on windy days. Regardless of wind direction, there is always a flat or deep hole behind a wind break that can be fished in with

the potential to make a good catch. Aransas Pass is also a jumping off point for offshore boats that head up the Aransas Channel to the Gulf of Mexico out of Conn Brown Harbor or the San Patricio Navigation District Marina near Ransom Park. One of the top destinations in Texas for bay and flats fishing is around Rockport. Copano Bay has numerous shallow oyster reefs while St. Charles Bay and Redfish Bay are where the back water redfish action is. At Aransas Bay, there are open water reefs for trout and the St. Joe shoreline has inlets and tidal lakes for redfish, flounder and trout action. There is something for every avid fisherman or the tourist wanting a taste of the sport. Check out www.coastalbendfishing.com for locations and where to find guides and tips. Other fishing reports directed us to edges of Aransas Pass/Lydia Ann Lighthouse, located along the Lydia Ann Channel just north of Port Aransas. Another good spot would be the Aransas shrimp boat channel and Dagger Island. Anglers heading out to catch some monster fish in the Gulf won’t be disappointed. BAY FISHING Bay Fishing is an outstanding sport for any angler. Bay fishing in South Texas offers worldclass fishing year round with over 1,000 miles of bays and inland areas to fish. Bays in Aransas and San Patricio contain numerous saltwater marshes, channels and shallow flats. Although many parts of the bay are very shallow, fish are abundant and angling can be done by means of various casting techniques or fly fishing. Wade fishing can be seen year round in the mild temperatures of South Texas. Bay fishing offers as many different kinds of fish as there are ways to snag them. Redfish are a popular variety, giving anglers a good fight regardless of size. Saltwater trout are plentiful and abundant in the spring. Other varieties include: amberjack, Atlantic croaker, black drum, black fin tuna, blacktop shark, blue crab, bluefish, Florida pompano, gag grouper, gray snapper, hardhead sea catfish, King mackerel, Lane snapper and many varieties of trout, shark and turtles. July 11-14. Men, Women, and youth are welcome to participate and can register in advance by visiting www.deepsearoundup.com or registering on Thursday, July 11. In addition to participating in the competition, registrants will have access to a shrimp dump July 11 and an open bar and dinner both Friday and Saturday night. Drawing over 600 contestants each year, the Deep Sea Roundup is the oldest fishing competition in Texas. The event began in 1932 when it was then known as the Tarpon Roundup and has since grown to attract fisherman of all ages and skill levels. The competition categories will include Offshore, Bay Surf, Fly Fishing and a Junior Division competition. Offshore fishing typically takes place 20-30 miles from shore while Inshore fishing takes place 2-3 miles from shore. Fly fishing requires the fisherman or “angler” to utilize different angling techniques using an artificial fly as fish bait. In addition to fishing, the two day event will include a free Piggy Perch contest for kids at Municipal Harbor. Thursday, July 11 will include hors d’ourves, an open bar, and fish pots. Friday, July 12 festivities will begin at 6:00 a.m. when the Bay Surf Division begins while the Offshore Division fishing will begin at 7:00 a.m. The rest of the day will include the Piggy Perch contest and dinner at the Civic Center after the fishing ceases for the day at 4:00 p.m. Saturday’s schedule will be similar with the addition of a silent auction that evening while Sunday will include the Bill

All of the proceeds raised from the competition will fund scholarships to be awarded to local students and to support community youth activities. Interested visitors can watch the competition from the Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion at Roberts Point Park. Volunteers came together in wake of the havoc caused by Hurricane Harvey to ensure the competition continued. The event website
states that, “Harvey could not thwart our fishing spirit and we invite all fishermen inshore and off shore to join us and share our fishing spirit.” Avid lady fishermen interested in another Texas fishing opportunity are invited to register for the 6th Annual “Hotties on the Harbor” all women’s fishing competition on Aug. 3. Hosted by the Aransas Pass Chamber of Commerce, this competition will take place at Redfish Bay Boat House in Aransas Pass. The competition is open to up to four member teams, will include a Guided and Non-Guided Division, and will cost $100 per angler. The price will increase to $125 when late registration begins on July 18. Competitors must be 17 years old or older and must have a Texas Fishing License. The fishing will begin 30 minutes before sunrise the morning of August 3 and end at 4:00 p.m. rain or shine. Those interested can find more information at www.hottiesontheharbor.com.

Growing Into Gardening BY CHRISTY TINSLEY ILFREY Special to Coastal Scene
I
was not born to garden. Growing up in the suburbs of north Dallas, I considered a lot of careers – computer engineer, accountant, teacher – but gardener was not among them. (Neither were writer or speaker.) I drove a sports car, paid hundreds of dollars
for haircuts and sculptured nails and was more interested in live music than living plants. In the early months of our relationship, my thenboyfriend gave me a Spanish Dagger as a gift. It is an easy-to-grow native tree that provides a striking evergreen backdrop for colorful

perennials. That poor yucca. Ignorant of its proper care, I killed the tree by over-watering it. As our relationship blossomed, I began to see the natural world through David’s eyes. He taught me about native plants, their companion plantings and the wildlife that depends on them for food and/or shelter. The plants, for me, epitomized the true Texas spirit: colorful, resilient, self-sufficient and enduring. But as much as I appreciated their beauty, I was more attracted to the philosophy of gardening in harmony with nature than the gardening itself. As our relationship matured, my understanding of sustainable gardening expanded to encompass water conservation, resource preservation, and habitat restoration. Gradually, I began to explore raw and live foods, then foraging wild foods. I found myself in the garden, growing food for humans as well as wildlife and turning my writing hobby into a career. My speaking voice took a little longer to cultivate. No longer content to merely write and speak about these topics, I yearned to live among the plants and wildlife in their natural setting. I left the suburbs in search of my own personal Walden*. I found it in Aransas County. Nestled between Rockport and Aransas Pass and only a short drive to Port Aransas and Corpus Christi, Sage Hollow is a convergence of three primary ecoregions: Live Oak/Redbay forest, coastal prairie and waterfront (gulf, bays, marshes and estuaries.) Three registered wetlands exist Summer 2019
on our property, but most of the perimeter is forest. The areas between the two are coastal prairies that morph into ponds when the water table is high (especially after a hurricane and rainfall double the annual average.) Live Oak can tolerate temporary flooding. However, if its “feet” remain wet for extended periods, the trees will topple over and often will perish. Redbay prefers dry soils in shade or part sun.

Most of our live oaks remain intact but several redbays turned yellow then died after last year’s deluge. The casualties occurred in spots where water stood for months. The locations that drained quickly Spider Lily are verdant with understory plants, such as Yaupon Holly, Southern Wax Myrtle, and Dwarf Palmetto. Coralbean, which also prefers well-draining soil and shade or part sun, is more robust than ever. Its scarlet plumes really brighten the shady forest and attract hummingbirds. Turk’s Cap – a native that we reintroduced to Sage Hollow – is finally acclimated. Its cardinal-colored, tube-shaped flowers will bring the hummers through in the fall.

Along the edges of wooded areas are Buttonbush, Crinum Lily, Spider Lily and Switchgrass. When the prairies become ponds, these plants really stand out. When dry, they serve as the foundation for vignettes of prairie plants. The lilies were inundated for months and are expected to be the real showpieces this year. Lanceleaf Coreopsis and Tickseed are abundant where the ponds have gradually receded away from the forest. Lemon Beebalm is prolific: seeds were dispersed by flowing floodwater and germinated throughout the forest, along the waterfront and in now-dry pockets of prairie. American Beautyberry rebounded in the higher, drier locations. As the water table drops, stands of Coastal and Silver Bluestems emerge thicker than before Harvey. Soon, we will learn whether the Elliott’s and Purple Lovegrasses will, too. Indian Blanket seeds, like the lemon beebalm, were transported to sunny locations at slightly higher elevation. Just before the flood of June 2018 we dispersed wildflower seed. Texas Bluebonnet, Tickseed, Indian Blanket, and Standing Cypress germinated and some bloomed. Like a true gardener, I wait with childlike enthusiasm for next year’s show. Gardeners must be the most optimistic people I know. They pour themselves into their work, despite the looming threat of total decimation by weather, and feeble promises for profits. They take risks to ensure our community has access to healthy food and a healthy environment. Perhaps I grew up disconnected from the soil and plants and animals that nourish us. But, as any transplanted Texan worth her word, I got here as fast as I could. *Definition of Walden - Inspired by this quote from Henry David Thoreau about his years in the woods at Walden Pond: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

Keep Frankie fit with FitBit! BY LINDA COUVILLION’S BROTHER, JOE
Note from the Editor: Joe Valencic recently visited his sister Linda Convillion in Rockport. Joe is a Professor of Science and Technology at a University in Southern California. He wrote “I observe the environment and its inhabitants always with interest. As many coastal residents, walking the coast areas including the beaches, harbors and parks can be both enjoyable and healthy. My sister, Linda, and I walk her small dog Frankie. So, in the interest of science, and the health of all walked dogs, I did a bit of research...………...”

n case you have been hiding in an ice cave in Antarctica the past few years, human performance monitoring devices are the Crème Brule of current, invogue wearable technology. Strap them on your wrist, wear them around your waist, attach them to your ankle, use them in a headband……..well, you get the idea. These inexpensive devices talk to your Smart Phone via Bluetooth to record how far you walked, how many steps you have taken, how long you have been exercising and most importantly how many calories you have burned. (Just one more helping of Crème Brule, please). While their acknowledged value to humans have been touted in publications ranging from AMA Research Journal to the National Inquirer, what about your dog? Sure, you walk and feed Fido but what about his canine performance? A quick Google search and a host of devices like FitBite, FitBark and I think even a FitBarf are about to hit the market, many with $300 price tags. Do you really need a doggie version? Rumor has it that NASA and the Department of Energy have a secret program Summer 2019
to develop a FitFart device to monitor methane generation from your pets. Both CO2 and Methane are the prime greenhouse gases that are responsible for global carbon unbalance. Think of it. Just like requiring vaccinations and licenses, pets will be monitored so that their owners will be charged for carbon credits in an attempt to curb global warming from pet generated methane!

Rival dog food is supposedly working on a low emission version of their next generation HyperChow. Can you imagine the label…Sugar free, Salt free, Gluten free, MSG free, Fart free! As an unscientific, scientific study, I talked my sister, Linda, to put her FitBit on Frankie, a 12 year old, 20-pound mutt that loves to walk. The goal was to find out if it would work and how Frankie’s performance compared to his

master………or mistress. With the FitBit on his collar, Frankie was ready to show his stuff around the approximate twomile loop that he explored, and fertilized, daily for the past three months. The FitBit did not interfere with his stride and was light enough to not effect his zigzag movements in search of another favorite watering spot. In fact, I did note a bit of aggressive jealousy in several passing dogs that saw the subtle bling in Frankie’s collar. At the completion of the walk, Frankie was always anxious to check his performance on the Smart Phone App. One bark meant he was happy, but he always growls when he doesn’t burn enough calories. I am inspired to make an Auxiliary App that simply puts a symbol for calorie burn performance to make it a bit easier for Frankie to interpret his results. For example, the higher the calories burned the more dog biscuit treats show up on the screen. They call it doggie feedback, I think. So, what are the actual results: 1. The loop Frankie walks is a bit less than 2.0 miles. It takes Frankie 4,600 steps to cover 1.92 miles and 4385 steps to cover 1.83 miles. 2. He burns approximately 71 calories on the walk. 3. The duration of the walk ranges from 34 to 45 minutes depending on pit stops. With this information owners, have good indication of the amount of food to feed their dog. After all, humans on this walk burn about the same amount of calories as a serving of Crème Brule………..or 47 dog biscuit treats!

Fulton Mansion and Education and History Center – The mansion sustained extensive damage from Hurricane Harvey when the roof peeled away taking the chimneys. The mansion sustained major water damage. Most of the contents in the mansion had been secured and removed prior to the hurricane. The mansion will be closed until further notice. Expectations are to have repairs completed by January 2020. The Education and History Center is open and free to the public. Call 361-729-0386 for hours of operation. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is one of the oldest in the United States and is the winter home of the Whooping Cranes. The park is open. Visitors should bring their own water. The auto tour is open sunrise to sunset daily. The pier is open. The Visitor Center is closed until further notice, including the lobby and restrooms. This Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful place to get away. Hiking and biking trails are open in addition to viewing lots of birds and animals. Take your time and spend the entire day. The campgrounds are not open yet but you can still launch a kayak. Goose Island State Park and The Big Tree are only minutes north of Rockport-Fulton in historic Lamar. The park is open to the public now and the staff is working. It is possible the boat ramp and some areas of the park may open for day use by the end of the year. The “Big Tree” is still standing and available for viewing. The “Big Tree” at Goose Island State Park was named the State Champion Coastal Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) in 1969, and is thought to be one of the largest in the nation.

Star-Spangled
Celebrations
COMPILED BY KARLA ABERNETHY
O
n July 4, 1776, members of the Second Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. When the Declaration was read to citizens in American cities, people began cheering and celebrating. In 1783, following the end of the War of Independence, July 4 became a holiday. Celebrations included speeches, military events, parades and fireworks. The annual event grew over the years to include pageants, picnics, sporting events, contests and trips. The second president, John Adams, wrote about the Fourth of July, “I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other.
