on’t miss the 31st annual HummerBird Celebration September 19-22. This event occurs each year during the fall migration of the Rubythroated Hummingbird, which takes them through the Rockport-Fulton area on their way south. Founded by local residents Betty Baker and Jesse Grantham, this event was created to celebrate the thousands of hummingbirds that use the area as their layover to prepare for their long journey. The stop includes increasing their body fat up to 50%. “We created this event built around a natural resource ‘the hummingbird’ to bring awareness of nature, wildlife, habitat

and all birds to our community,” RockportFulton Chamber of Commerce President/ CEO Diane Probst said. “It is incredible to think how much of an impact this event has had on the community from putting the Rockport-Fulton area ‘on-the-map’ with a fabulous fall birding migration to the development of more than 35 birding hotspots in the community.” Expected to bring in around 5,000 people from around the globe each year, this event is used by the Tourism Development Council to build the economy for the area. “We’ve been blown away by the ticket sales this year,” Probst said. “This year is going to a lot different because of the updates we’ve made to the speakers and activities that will be offered.” The four-day celebration will feature 75 vendors and more than 12 speakers who will offer a variety of nature inspired field trips and presentations. According to the event website, the program is designed for those who enjoy bird watching and those who follow migration patterns. Sponsored by 16 local businesses and organizations, the event promises to be jam packed with birdrelated fun. “People come back every year because of the education and learning,” Probst said. “The star of the show is the hummingbird. There are so many that you don’t see anywhere else. There are thousands all over the community.” A t-shirt designed by the 2019 T-Shirt design competition winner, Sue Bonnar, will be available for sale throughout the event. Sue is a local artist who specializes in bird and wildlife art. She will be present to autograph t-shirts for anyone interested. You can check out her work on her Facebook page –Sue Bonnar, Artist.

The first evening, the keynote dinner and presentation will feature programs by “Vibrant Migrants” by Birdwatcher’s Digest ‘Birder of the Year,’ Martha McLeod and “Creative Dialogue for Our Troubles Wildlife” by Niharika Rajput. Rajput is a practicing wildlife artist and a conservationist based in New Delhi, India. According to her website, she uses her art to investigate the damage and dissociation caused by the urban intellect and the urgency to restore nostalgia within deconstructed realms of the urban society. “The sheer melody of the cheerful hidden chirrups at the break of dawn fills every bird lover with joy. I have always been intrigued by nature’s sophisticated mechanism, but my love for birds is unmatched,” Rajput wrote in an article titled Art for Wildlife Conservation. “I use my art to address social, political and economic issues focusing on nature and wildlife, and raising concerns about their current status.” Interested individuals can register at www.rockport-fulton.org/Hummer_ Volunteer_Information to volunteer to help facilitate the various activities and programs. each Keepers is paving the way toward clean Texas beaches one clean-up crew at a time. Formed by a member of the Coastal Bend community, Carl Lee Allen, this growing organization is committed to preserving natural resources in the Coastal Bend and throughout the country. This rapidly growing community of good stewards are joining forces to protect the beaches, local parks, neighborhoods and outdoor venues from trash. Formerly known as Pass People, Beach
Keepers planned their first beach cleanup at Mustang Island State Park in June 2019. With 36 loyal members in tow, the group reached out to local businesses to sponsor the food and supplies needed to host dozens of volunteers who registered to help with the clean-up. “We had around 60 people show up to help and we picked up 86 large bags of trash in less than two hours,” Director Shannon Teems said. The success of the June event and marketing efforts on social media has attracted a total of 400 members and

counting. Membership is not restricted to those living in the Coastal Bend. All are welcome to join the group. In addition to planning local clean up events, the group is encouraging people around the country and the globe to host their own clean up days. Teems said that a lot of people have answered that call and have posted photos of their event or activity on the group’s Facebook page. “We want to create a tidal wave from the beach to the streets where anyone cleaning a beach or park or anything can post and inspire others to clean,” Teems said. “It’s been really inspiring to see that there are so many people out there who care and are doing what they can.” The group is currently in the process of obtaining their 501c3 status, which they say will cost them between $400-$600. In order to raise those funds, the group has started selling t-shirts, decals and more with 100% of the proceeds going toward the filing fees. “Once we are able to obtain our nonprofit status, all of the funds we raise will go toward hosting more clean-up days or installing bag stations in new areas,” Teems said.

Bag stations are installed posts with bags available for park or beach visitors to use to clean up after themselves and others. The group recently won a huge victory by gaining city council approval to install bag stations in Mustang Island State Park. Allen started working with State Parks and Recreation a year ago to gain needed approval to install the stations. “There were no trash cans on the island because the city wanted the area to remain completely natural, but the result of that decision was the island getting completely trashed,” Teems said. Since its inception, the group has picked up over a thousand pounds of trash on Mustang Island alone. Teems said that part of the struggle with getting approval came from a lack of funding for state parks. “Funding for the parks isn’t a top priority so they didn’t have the funds to hire staff to pick up trash left behind by visitors,” Teems said. “We had to figure out what would work for everyone.” Ultimately, Teems said that the goal of the organization is to inspire good stewardship in every community. “The beach is just a metaphor for whatever your happy place is,” Teems said. “Your beach could be the local park you take your dog to or the trails surrounding your child’s school. It’s all about protecting your happy place.” When asked why these efforts were so important, Teems said that this is our world and we only have one. “If the water dies, we die,” Teems said. According to the Ocean Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas Alliance, an estimated eight million metric tons of plastic enters the ocean each year. The Ocean Health Index reports that the most commonly found items during beach clean ups are cigarettes/filters, food/container wrappers, plastic beverage bottles and plastic bags. “It’s sad to look out to see something so vast and amazing and then turn around

BEACH KEEPERS TOURIST TIPS
Do your part while enjoying the Coastal Bend’s beaches! Here are some tips on what you can do to keep our natural resources a great place to visit. 1. Unwrap all of your new beach toys and equipment before you head to catch some waves. New canopies and floaties come wrapped in cardboard, Styrofoam, and/or plastic. That same plastic is easy to lose hold of and will be eaten by animals. 2. Buy a 2-liter instead of a 6-pack and use a reusable cup. This means less plastic! 3. Avoid bringing straws and single use bottles with you. These items are easy to lose and extremely harmful to local marine life. 4. Take a trash bag with you to clean up after yourselves. You can even pay it forward by cleaning up the section of the beach around you!

to see what people have done to it,” Teems said. “People think destroyed…trash filled beaches only happen overseas when it’s happening right here.” The next beach clean-up day hosted by Beach Keepers will take place in October. Any ideas for improvement or new initiatives are welcomed and can be expressed on the Beach Keepers Facebook page. Supporters also are highly encouraged to share what they’re doing to improve their own community. “Our philosophy is beach to the streets and everything in between,” Teems said. “If you’re cleaning up or doing anything environmentally positive, we want to see it!” For more information and updates on new initiatives and efforts, visit the groups Facebook page.

For example, there will be a special 45th Annual anniversary poster and the Boat Show is now the Boat and Outdoor Show. In honor of the 45th anniversary, a special Hollywood and Glam Night at the Festival Grounds will be from 6-9 pm Oct. 9. SeaA-Bration is a pre-event party to get the festivities started. Cost for the sit-down dinner is $100 per person or $1,000 for a reserved table of eight. The night includes an open bar, meal, glitz and glamour. The paparazzi will be there to snap photos of all the attendees. “There will be a silent auction and plenty of feathers and bling,” said Probst. Tickets can be purchased online at www. rockport-fulton.org/Seafair or contact the Chamber of Commerce at 361-729-6445. “We also are excited about our entertainment,” Probst said. Friday night, Oct. 11, country artist Tracy Byrd takes the stage. Byrd burst onto the country music scene

He had a string of hits including “Lifestyle’s of the Not so Rich and Famous,” “The First Step,” “Watermelon Crawl” and number one hit “The Keeper of the Stars.” The number one hit went on to win the 1995 Academy of Country Music Song of the Year Award. Byrd became the host of the TNN television special “Tracy Byrd’s Big Love” and hosted TNN Outdoors’ Weekend Outdoor Broadcast for three years. He continued recording hits with songs “A Good Way to Get on My Bad Side,” another number 1 single “10 Rounds with Jose Cuervo” and top 10 hit “Just Let Me be in Love.” After performing more than 4,000 shows from 1992-2009, Byrd took a break then
returned to music in 2014. His latest album, All American Texan, was recorded in Tyler, Texas. The stellar entertainment continues Saturday with a tribute to Queen. the carnival will be adjacent the Seafair area and open for business. Seafair ticket prices are: Thursday-Saturday: $10 per person, $5 for ages 12-7 and ages 6 and under are free. Sunday is Aransas County Resident Appreciation Day. Tickets are $5 and all Aransas County students are free. A Seafair wristband is available for $20. There also will be a VIP ticket price. Information will be available on the website. “It is going to be a great year,” Probst said. Seafair began as a fall event to fill the lull between the summer tourist season and the arrival of winter tourists. It began with a parade, arts and crafts, bands, water entertainment and a gumbo cook-off. All of which remain major attractions of the event today. Rockport resident Bill Christian is credited with the creation of Seafair. He formed a board of directors and established a nonprofit organization. In 2000, the RockportFulton Chamber of Commerce assumed responsibilities for Seafair and has continued the annual tradition.

outh Texas offers world-class saltwater fishing year round. For the nearshore fisherman, there are thousands of square miles of shallow bay and over 250 miles of Gulf beach. For the offshore enthusiast, the South Texas Coast provides easy access to the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Fishing in South Texas gives anglers opportunities for freshwater lakes and rivers or bay and deep sea fishing in the Gulf waters lining Nueces, San Patricio and Aransas Counties. Fish in fresh water sources are bass, a variety of panfish and catfish while
saltwater varieties of fish include redfish, ounder, saltwater trout, grouper and the list goes on. Bay fishing and deep sea fishing will offer fishermen an endless choice of tackle, bait and lures to reel in their limits.

shallow ats. Although many parts of the bay are very shallow, fish are abundant and angling can be done by means of various casting techniques or y fishing. Wade fishing can be seen year round in the mild temperatures of South Texas. Kayaks are another favorite venue for fishing in bays to fish shallow or deeper waters. All across South Texas, guides are ready to show you their expertise in locating fish to make your trip successful. Bay fishing offers as many different kinds of fish as there are ways to snag them. Redfish are a popular variety, giving anglers a good fight regardless of size.
Saltwater trout are plentiful and abundant in the spring. Other varieties include: amberjack, Atlantic croaker, black drum, black fin tuna, blacktop shark, blue crab, bluefish, Florida pompano, gag grouper, gray snapper, hardhead sea catfish, King mackerel, Lane snapper and many varieties of trout, shark and turtles.

State Park, located approximately 20 miles northwest of Corpus Christi. Predominant fish species in the lake are largemouth and white bass, crappie, blue channel and flathead catfish as well as bluegill and red ear sunfish. Largemouth bass are abundant with frequent reports of fish reaching five pounds-plus being caught. Blue catfish are the most abundant of catfish although flathead and channel catfish also provide excellent numbers. White bass comes in from the Nueces River channel during cooler months and in the main reservoir during summer. Crappie fishing has been improving and respectable catches are not uncommon in the spring. The state park at Lake Corpus Christi has a beautiful view of the lake with shoreline campgrounds available. Amenities abound at Mustang Hollow Campground in
Mathis, also located right on the shoreline of Lake Corpus Christi. The former KOA has a swimming pool for families and has live entertainment most Fridays and Saturdays. This campground features 47 wooded acres of wildlife area, two miles of lakeshore, 20 boat slips-and 46 camping cabins and cottages (along with RV and tent sites). Enjoy fishing, boating, hiking and swimming in the lake or pool. Keep an eye out for arrowheads; this site is a Karankawa Indian state archaeological landmark. It’s a great central location for day trips to San Antonio, Gulf of Mexico, Padre Island National Seashore, Texas State Aquarium, Mexico and more. life. Largemouth bass and catfish are the most popular sport fish in the reservoir. Bass are abundant with frequent reports of double-digit fish being boated. Blue catfish are the most abundant catfish species, but flathead and channel cat also provide excellent fishing. White bass provide excellent angling opportunities in the main Frio River channel during cooler months and along the northern shoreline during the summer. The surface area of the reservoir covers 25,670 acres with a maximum depth of 95 feet. Poplar spring baits include spinner baits, buzz baits, rattletraps, crank baits and un-weighted soft plastic worms or jerk baits. Summer bass fishing in Choke Canyon can be frustrating for even the most experienced angler. Top water baits such as buzz baits, Zara Spooks or Pop-R’s presented very early or very late in the day near weed beds, are popular and can be productive throughout the day if cloud cover is present. Real Estate is still
BIG BUSINESS
in the Coastal Bend R eal estate continues to be one of the most active businesses in the Coastal Bend. Property values are rising in most markets although there are plenty of “deals” for the shrewd buyer. Homes don’t sit on the MLS long, especially during summer months. The real estate forecast is getting better every day as a more normal market develops in communities rebuilding and restoring homes and businesses. The Rockport Housing Report for July showed the median price of a home at $206,000 and home prices were up 21% as compared to July 2018. The percentage of homes was the same at 34% for homes from $100,000-$199,000 and 34% from homes priced from $200,000 to $299,000. Gemma Anthony, Vice President of Rockport Area Association of Realtors, Chairperson of the MLS in Rockport and Realtor at Keller-Williams Coastal Bend in Rockport, said many of their clients were the first to offer help after Hurricane Harvey. “They wanted to help restore the area because they love it so.”
They said, ‘’We have been coming down here with our families every summer for years and we want to help.” Real estate is not slowing down as one might expect after summer activity. “Prices are not being lowered and they are a little higher than immediately after Harvey,” Anthony said. “It’s because everything is new.... homes have been updated and repaired and are at the top value. “It’s location, location, location always in real estate,” she concluded. That includes several factors. “Taxes make a difference as well. Taxes in Aransas Pass are probably less than Rockport and a street in Rockport may have a different price than the same home in Key Allegro. “Prices also are up because people were struggling last year with insurance. When Harvey hit, many people wanted to sell as

work. If you overprice it, it will sit and sit and sit. If you price it right, it will sell right away. They listen to their friends and family....you have to let them learn, too. Every house sells.....some sell faster than others.” In Portland and Port Aransas, mid-priced housing is not readily available. Many people employed in Port Aransas were having a difficult time finding affordable property to live in and were having to look outside the city because housing was so expensive, according to Anthony. The same is true of Portland. While there are some rentals and a few multi-family apartments, middle priced homes are a scarcity in both communities. Port Aransas is still restoring affordable housing damaged in the hurricane. In San Patricio and Aransas Counties, rental property is very limited. “There is still a shortage on rentals and
is and be done. Prices were lower immediately after Harvey...if that house is going to sell for $100,000 before Harvey....now it sells for $150,000 because of the new sheetrock, new everything.” “Sometimes owners run the show,” Anthony said. “I have to let the seller see the market

still a shortage of homes, period, in our area” Anthony said. “We have a shortage of affordable homes here, period. We need homes priced from $100,000$150,000 for people who work in local stores, HEB, Walmart and restaurants. If you have a husband and wife, both working, making $10.00/hour, they could qualify for a low $100,000 home and achieve the American Dream. “Some of the people are not interested in affordable homes so people leave, they go to Corpus Christi or San Antonio. I had a conversation with a builder in Houston. We don’t have enough people to start building 60-70 homes. If we can get a builder to build 1,000 to 1,400 square foot homes, some people could afford to stay in our smaller communities,” Anthony said.
“Due to the fact that there are very few rental homes available in the south San Patricio County, further building and development is desperately needed. In some cases, it is less expensive to build than buy an existing home. Prices vary from community to community.”

winds and excessive rainfall landed in new places. Some have flourished as if they were intended to be “right there” all along. Others, unfortunately, ended up in spots with not enough or too much sun and moisture. Such is life, and these mysteries of Nature inspire those of us who work so closely with it. Look around and you will notice new landscapes and gardens throughout the Bend. Public spaces, such as municipal parks and businesses, and residential properties alike have undergone a Harvey “facelift.” One of my favorites is the new dunescape and entrance to City By the Sea, a neighborhood located on Business 35 near the intersection at Highway 188 in Aransas Pass. It is among my favorites not because my business designed, implemented and maintains it. It is not because of my preference for local native plants. I am ecstatic about this project because the residents of City By The Sea have embraced a forward-thinking vision that epitomizes the best of sustainable landscaping. To create an authentic dune, the backbone of the design must be ornamental grasses. Seaoats (Uniola paniculata) peaked in summer and will gradually, through fall, retreat from the limelight. Pink Gulf Muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) steals the show for a few weeks in October. Its pink-hued bloom dances on the breeze like a cotton candy-cloud. Perhaps the most exciting grass element is Beach Panic Grass (Panicum amarum). Despite

Thanks to local elected officials, we are farther along in the process than expected. In the garden, there also is recovery and renewal. Seeds dispersed by Harvey’s

oppressive heat and drought, the bluish strappy leaves cascade and seem to mimic waterfalls. Blooms are forming as of this writing and should be in their full glory when it is published. Apart from its beauty, Beach Panic Grass provides two vital ecological functions: it feeds and houses birds and it stabilizes dunes. The only downside is that it may appear “weedy” in summer, especially during its first year. But by the second year, the perennials and groundcovers – as well as the other grass species – have caught up. As the project matures, the mosaic of colors and textures will become clearly deliberate. Dune Sunflower (Helianthus debilis) bursts with splashes of yellow atop evergreen foliage alongside Woolly Stemodia’s (Stemodia tomentosa or lanata) dainty blue blooms and ever-silver foliage. Birds forage on the sunflower seeds and butterflies (namely, the Western Pygymy Blue) are drawn to Stemodia for its flowers (food) and foliage (shelter). Esperanza, or Yellow Bells (Tecoma stans) will develop into a large shrub or small tree with canary yellow blooms. Their tube shape appeals to hummingbirds and butterflies. Railroadvine, like Beach Panic Grass, helps to stabilize the dune; its purple flowers resemble morning glory and perfectly complement the yellow flowers. Other plants in this project are the stately Live Oak (Quercus virginiana), Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta), Seaside Goldenrod (Solidago

City By The Sea is taking a proactive approach by re-landscaping their public spaces with Daily lunch & Dinner SpecialS plants that thrive without irrigation and Full Bar & happy hour chemicals. Cut to Class: Area School changes and additions BY NORMA MARTINEZ Special to Coastal Scene
T
he Coastal Bend has great areas for fishing, swimming, beach spots and many attractions available for vacationers as well as locals. For those who may be contemplating moving their families to this area, they should know there are several communities with great educational facilities, academically and aesthetically. Several of those districts were adversely affected by 2017’s Hurricane Harvey, but have renovated their facilities. Some districts have completed construction projects, which began before the storm.
Gregory-Portland
The Gregory-Portland Independent School District serves students in the towns of Gregory and Portland and is located in the southeastern portion of San Patricio County, just eight miles north of Corpus Christi on U.S. Highway 181. The two communities have a combined population of 18,300 according to current statistics. The school district covers a 101-square-mile area and maintains an enrollment in excess of 4,500 students within its four elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school and one high school. The Gregory-Portland Intermediate campus,
however, is being demolished to make way for a new middle school. The plans were developed and a contract was awarded in April of 2019, for the construction of the new campus. The middle school will encompass grades six, seven and eight, with an enrollment of more than 1,000. Students have access to UIL academic events, athletics, a gifted/talented program, National Junior Honor Society and other clubs and organizations. Gregory-Portland High School’s enrollment is at more than 1,400 students, and the campus offers a variety of programs for its students in addition to academics, as they have the opportunity to join choir, drama/ theatre, band, cheerleading, UIL academic events, Student Council, as well as several student clubs such as Chess Club, German Club, FFA and more. Athletics include football, volleyball, cross country, golf, tennis, swimming, soccer, basketball, powerlifting, baseball and softball. The district features four elementary campus - East Cliff, W.C. Andrews, T.M. Clark, and Stephen F. Austin - which house grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grades for

more than 2,000 students, approximately 400 to 600 per campus. The district completed a $16.9 million project with the construction of East Cliff Elementary, which opened in the fall of 2016. The facility is twice the size of the former campus at more than 80,000 square feet. The Gregory-Portland ISD cut the ribbon on the new Andrews Elementary in January 2019. The new school is 50,452 square feet including detached buildings, for a total of 81,997 square feet. Construction plans for the future to be

The Port Aransas ISD has been educating the students in the Port Aransas community since 1913. Port Aransas is the only established town on Mustang Island, which is located north of Padre Island and is one of the longest barrier islands along the Texas coast. It is located in Nueces County. Currently, there are three campuses in the PAISD: H.G. Olsen Elementary serves prekindergarten through fifth grade students, Ancel Brundrett Middle School serves sixtheighth graders and Port Aransas High School serves ninth-12th grade students. PAISD voters had approved a $6 million bond in 2017, prior to Hurricane Harvey to provide major maintenance to district buildings, a new school bus, safety and security improvements at all three schools, technology upgrades and maintenance, staff housing, athletics and fine arts equipment and other building maintenance and improvements. The school district sustained much damage after the storm, but has been able to renovate and repair all campuses and move students back to their homes within months For information about the PAISD, go to http://www.paisd.net/about-us.

The Ingleside ISD’s new high school opened in March of 2019, as maintenance staff, students and teachers moved in over spring break, in preparation for classes beginning the following Monday in the new facility. The new 121,710 square-foot high school serves 750 students and features administration offices, a nurse’s office, a library, a cafetorium, a central kitchen and 44 classrooms. The variety of classrooms include a fine arts room, standard and life skills classrooms as well as science, computer and technology labs and a full home/restaurant kitchen for the culinary arts programs. in the summer of 2019 and was expected to continue at the opening of school. Students will be able to access the school from multiple dropoffs as bus and parent drop-off locations are separated. Student, faculty and visitor parking also are separated. The high school band hall is being renovated and should be ready in the fall of 2019. The district’s other campuses are Ingleside Primary for prekindergarten to first grade; Gilbert J. Mircovich Elementary, second through fourth grades; Blaschke/Sheldon Elementary, for fifth and sixth graders; and Leon Taylor Junior High School, seventh and eighth grades. Ingleside is located on Corpus Christi Bay on a portion of land known as Ingleside Point at the eastern tip of San Patricio County. A portion of the city also is located in Nueces County. For information about the IISD, go to http:// www.inglesideisd.org.
Aransas Pass ISD
Aransas Pass ISD will open its new state-ofthe-art elementary school in time for the fall semester as prekindergarten through second students will be housed in a new two-story building with a capacity of 750 students. The new campus includes a library, gymnasium and cafeteria, with a separate student and bus/service drive drop offs and secured entries for visitors. The parking and drop offs are still being worked on and will not be completely ready when school opens. Aransas Pass High School will be home to a new 18,800-square-foot gymnasium with a full size UIL gymnasium play area for basketball and volleyball, bleachers, ticket booth and restrooms. The addition will be an ADA accessible gym with seating for 1,000 spectators (500 seats home/500 seats visitor). The existing gym will stay as it is and be used for some physical education classes, practice space and games. The facility is expected to be open by October of 2019. Another high school project is the construction of a new 1,300-square-foot snack bar to be located between the football field and softball and baseball fields. The project includes men’s and women’s restrooms, storage, custodian closet, food preparation and serving windows. All APISD campuses benefit from technology Fall 2019

infrastructure improvements, vestibules, security cameras, lighting, roof replacement and repair, various walkway canopies and energy efficient central control units are included in the bond projects. Those other campuses are Charlie Marshall Elementary which serves third, fourth and fifth grades; and Blunt Middle School, sixth through eighth grades.
