Student Athletes Celebrated at 6th Annual Scholarship Luncheon

CCISD Athletic Director, Debbie Fuchs, closed out the celebration with some final thoughts. “Every single day be the best you can be. Go beyond the game, strive toward athletic excellence, and continue displaying positive character. Always be leaders, and make it count,” she said.

The luncheon was made possible by longtime community partner and presenting sponsor, Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital.

Clear Creek ISD celebrated the athletic and academic accomplishments of 92 students across five high schools during the 6th Annual Scholarship Luncheon. The athletes were awarded scholarships to play at the next level in their respective sports after graduation.

As is tradition at the scholarship luncheon, two former CCISD student athletes returned to share lessons learned from their post-secondary journey with the soon-to-be graduates. Returning home this year was Lauren Veil, Clear Lake High School UIL State Champion in golf and graduate of Wichita State University, and Ashton Duke, 2016 Valedictorian of Clear Creek High School, tennis athlete and graduate of Rice University.

Clear Creek ISD Alpha Program Has New Home Clear Creek ISD’s Gifted and Talented Department is pleased to launch its Alpha Park beginning at the start of the 2019-2020 school year. The Alpha Park is a learning community that surrounds Alpha’s newlyrenovated home-base in the district’s Learner Support Center. Here, students will be able to explore the many unique offerings of the Alpha program in an expanded instructional format.

Alpha students will continue to enjoy the learning opportunities the University of Houston Clear Lake campus has to offer through nature areas, field biology excursions and special areas located on campus.

This idea is new to St. Thomas, but has been a standard practice in many early child education circles for decades. This new program will exist only for our partial week Pre-K classes, MWF and T-Th classes respectively.

Our 5-day-a-week classes will remain as single-age group classes. This class has some different start/pick up times. Families have the option of starting their school day at the regular start time (8:05) or at 9:00, and can pick up at 1:00, 2:15, or 3:15 - with adjusted pricing for each option respectively.

Classes for this room are available in 5-day, 3-day, or 2-day-a-week options. Prices start at $200/month.

The preschool day will consist of all the typical happenings you would expect in a single-age class: morning circle time, outdoor play, snack, etc. just side by side with younger or older students respectively. Academic lessons (pre-literacy or numeracy skills for example) are taught in small groups of 2-3 children rather than as a whole class. This enables a 3-year-old who is ready to read and count the opportunity to hone those skills, and for 4-year-olds to receive the instruction that will prepare them for kindergarten.

The Clear Creek Education Foundation (CCEF) visited 67 outstanding CCISD teachers on 27 campuses during the annual Sur-Prize Patrol. Teachers were surprised by the CCEF board members and community partners with Teacher Innovative Grants totaling $125,588 that will impact over 18,290 CCISD students. The Clear Creek Education Foundation awards teachers with grant money through their Teacher Innovative Grant Program, giving them the opportunity to take education to the next level and providing unique, hands-on learning experiences in the classroom. Since the Foundation’s inception in 1992, more than $3.3 million has been distributed district wide in a variety of educational programs.

“From virtual reality, archery, drones, coding and STEAM (the arts being added to stem) this years’ Teacher Innovative Grants brought more innovation to the classroom than ever,” stated Executive Director Deborah Laine.

“These exciting grants will directly impact students for the 2019-2020 school year. This is the climax of our year to award our teachers these programs that take education to the next level.”

Funding from the Clear Creek Education Foundation is made possible thanks to the many partners of the Foundation, who have come together to Inspire Educational Excellence in CCISD through the Teacher Innovative Grant Program. The Foundation feels the Teacher Innovative Grant Program is a vital and necessary strategy in assisting teachers to maintain the high level of achievement in CCISD. Imagine the stress of starting high school and college simultaneously, all while battling a debilitating condition.

Erynn Richards was only six years old when she found out she had lost all hearing in her left ear.

“My dad took me to the movie theater, and he was trying to talk to me from the left side and I had to completely turn around to hear him,” Erynn said.

“So that’s when they knew something wasn’t right and we found out I had no hearing in that ear.”

Then, in eighth grade, she began experiencing symptoms of vertigo due to her right ear having to overcompensate for the loss of hearing in the left ear.

“I already have no balance in my inner ear on the right, so I began to have these episodes where the room would start spinning if I started to get anxious,” Erynn said.

These side effects, which include ongoing spells of dizziness and nausea, can last anywhere from one day to a week or more. She began taking medicine, which helped for a few years.

It just added to my anxiety, which made the vertigo symptoms even worse.”

After ending up in the emergency room one time due to dehydration, Erynn knew she needed to take charge of her life again.

“I brought it upon myself to figure out better time management since I never knew when I could have another issue,” Erynn said. “I was always staying on top of my work and was so much more determined to do well in my classes so if I had an issue, I would have a little cushion to deal with it. It gave me more of a purpose since I did not want the vertigo to rule the rest of my life.”

This change in mindset has completely altered the course of her high school career. She went from not knowing if she would be able to succeed in her classes, to now graduating Summa Cum Laude from Clear Horizons, earning her associate degree from San Jacinto Community College, and receiving $60,000 in scholarship money. Her dream is to now use her personal struggles as the motivation to help others.

After graduation, Erynn will be attending Stephen F. Austin University to study communication sciences and disorders. She will then go on to get her master’s degree in speech language pathology.

“I had to have speech therapy when I was little due to my loss of hearing, and I just remember not having the greatest experience with the speech therapist,” Erynn said. “However, when my sister went through speech therapy, she absolutely loved her therapist. I remember thinking how impactful that one person was in helping her and that stuck with me.” Erynn’s interest in the career path grew over the years, and she ended up doing two internships in speech language pathology for a class at school.

“I worked at a clinic and at an elementary school” Erynn said. “I got the chance to work with young students with autism, and after seeing how sweet and smart they are, I knew I wanted to help in any way I can. So, I plan on working for an elementary school after receiving my degrees.” As for her advice to other students who might be struggling through a similar situation, Erynn wants them to always keep hope that they will get through it and lean on others for support.

This is an on-the-water class, where students are introduced to sailing in a beach environment. Participants must be comfortable in the water and know how to swim. PAX-Program of Academic Exchange, a nonprofit educational foundation, is seeking volunteer families to host High School Foreign Exchange students for the academic school year or shortterm (4-6 week) welcome placement. This year, guests will celebrate more than America’s Freedom at the city’s signature Independence Day event, as this July marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. CITGO Freedom Over Texas has partnered with NASA’s Johnson Space Center, to bring an exclusive Space City Experience to all patrons at the event featuring its history and what the future holds for intergalactic exploration and travel.

The signature area will include an opportunity to be up close and personal with astronauts, robotic demonstrations, virtual reality fieldtrips to the International Space Station, the Space Exploration Vehicle (SEV), NASA’s Destination Station, and other NASA assets and activities.

I recently moved to League City and bought a house about 25 years old. It needed updating in the worst way. I became aware of BJ Stampley and Maverick through a friend. The work that was done for my friend was exceptional, so I asked him to help me with my house. I could not be onsite because I had to sell my homes in Florida and Michigan, but I was very comfortable that BJ would do the changes to the house as we had discussed. When a child enters the care of the state because their home is no longer safe, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer to help that child. This volunteer is called a Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA. CASA volunteers are representatives from our community who are trained to speak up for a child’s best interests in court. A CASA volunteer gets to know the child and gathers information from everyone involved in the child’s daily life, including family members, foster parents, teachers, daycare providers, doctors, lawyers, social workers, and other relevant persons. The volunteer uses the information gathered to report to the judge, advocating for the child’s needs while in care until they return home or become part of a new forever family.

The chapter’s May meeting and end of year award luncheon was held in Perry’s Grill in Friendswood. President Judy Hotman was given a gift of appreciation, Rosa Vance was awarded program of the year and secret sisters exchanged gifts and revealed their identities. Service chairman Loraine Gomez collected paper goods brought by members for the Bay Area Turning Point women’s shelter.

ClearCreek Council honored the chapter’s Women of the Year at a tea hostessed by Xi Lambda Rho chapter in the home of Nancy Block. Her beautiful Kemah home was the perfect setting for this tropical tea.

Two Left Feet Dance Club Announces New Location The Two Left Feet Ballroom Dance Club is excited to announce a new dance location at the Bay Area Presbyterian Church (BAPC) which locates at 670 East Medical Center Blvd, Webster, TX 77598. We will be using their gym with a large wood floor. The club welcomes dancers of all levels to come out and dance with us. Visitors are welcome but we encourage membership, which is more cost effective. Visitor fees are only $10 per person. A large variety of dance music is played from 7:00pm to 10:00pm on the third Saturday of every month. Last Call for Music Camp Registration The 13th annual Music Camp sponsored by the Bay Area Youth Singers and the Bay Area Chorus kicks off July 15-19, 8:30-5:00, with a Friday evening concert, on the campus of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 18220 Upper Bay Rd., 77058. Students entering grades one through 8 are eligible to attend Music Camp where morning session campers sing, learn the basics of playing various instruments, play music games, present a concert and have a great time making music with other campers.

This year’s theme is “Music that Moves.”

Afternoon session campers rehearse and present a mini Broadway musical production with singing, dancing, and acting. In Scouting, “Fast Start” training provides an immediate comfort level for new scouts and enables them to say, “I can do this!” For Troop 849 for Girls, this training was held on June 4 in order to acquaint the scouts with camping basics before their first camp out in June as a new troop.

Seven girls participated in Fast Start, where they set up the rain fly and handled takedown, set up tents, and learned how to assemble and light the camp stoves with the instruction delivered by Troop 848 adult Quartermaster, Todd Zimbeck and Alex Meyer, Assistant Scoutmaster. New chuck boxes were inspected and inventoried, and the girls learned cooking techniques, how to clean up on a campout, how to return clean/dry camp gear, and learned about the Scouting roles and procedures of the Quartermasters, both youth and adult.

Troop 849’s Senior Patrol Leader, Lisa Moore, led the troop in additional training, including campout meal planning, kitchen/ food safety and safe food handling. The menu planning rated five stars by adult leadership as Pop Tarts never once came up (a staple for boy troop meal planning).

Instead, the girls chose to integrate greens and fruits into their meal menus to save prep time and expenses.

Girls 11 - 17 years old interested in the BSA scouting program and looking for “fun with a purpose” are encouraged to check out Troop 849, hosted at Clear Lake United Methodist Church. Few people really enjoy cardiovascular exercises per se. But it doesn’t have to be a chore: Dancing is an EXCELLENT way to exercise while having fun! Israeli Folk Dancing sessions are conducted at Congregation Shaar Hashalom, and are not built on one another; so, anyone can start any time.

Rick told us up front that he would not start our job for three months, and this was accurate. When he did start, however, it was a beehive of activity and progressed rapidly. All the subs work well together and the quality of work was outstanding. Subs were professional and polite and clean and neat. Rick was very reasonable about change orders and his pricing is fair. No surprises. It was as good an experience as you can have remodeling and I would hire Rick and any one of the subs he brought in again without reservation.
