Steam Locomotives of the Swiss Rhätia Over sixty years after the last of their kind disappeared, the unmistakable sound of laboring steam locomotives echoed through the picturesque valleys of the Swiss Grisons in honor of a historic event: The Rhaetia Railroad’s 100th birthday. The original 100 year old 1-C wet-steam locomotive “Rhätia” and its two 83 year old 1-D hot-steam sisters "107" and "108" had been edged out by the age of electricity and spent years in museums and storage. A second maiden voyage lets these spry seniors steam full speed ahead through some of Europe’s most enchanting mountain scenery: the flaming orange of autumn forests, golden fields, and verdant valleys beneath white capped peaks. These old-timers pass quaint villages and farmhouses, climb up to a lovely mountain lake, and glide along arched viaducts which are feats of superb Swiss engineering. Riding the world’s most technically demanding tracks. Mastering climbs of thousands of feet, carrying passengers through the glory of the
Swiss Alps… Full Steam Ahead on the Famous
Gotthard Rail Winding its way through the Alps, the Gotthard Line is one of Europe’s most famous and ingeniously built mountain railroads. Rising 2079 feet on the northern site from Erstfeld to Göschenen, it has 3 spiral tunnels- the main Gotthard tunnel is 9.2 miles long. The southern slope between Airolo and Biasca descends and has four spiral tunnels. Opened in 1882, the entire stretch was electrified forty years later in 1922. This meant that the steam era on these mighty slopes was relatively short. But in the Summer of 1997, a minor sensation occurred. Just like in the “Good Old Days”, steam-driven trains again rolled over the Gotthard celebrating the 150th birthday of Swiss Railways. The DESTI-Team joined the celebration and went into enthusiastic action, shooting from the tracks and cabs, from inside trains and from a specially built dray driving alongside… We are proud to present to you this outstanding historical DVD-production. Featured are:
Saint Gotthard Railway Line From the Stagecoach to the Intercity One of the important routes through the swiss Alps has always been the St. Gotthard Pass. In the summer of 1882, the era of travel on the stagecoach ended and the hour of the rail ways had arrived. This fascinating DVD production takes you on an interesting journey through a beautiful part of the swiss Alps via the world-famous St. Gotthard Rail Way. The line from Zurich and the line from Basle via Lucerne connect just south of Lake Zug where the St. Gotthard begins. It travels along the eastern shore of the Lake Lucerne towards the Reuss Valley to Goeschenen and reaches a height of almost 2000 feet above sea level. It passes through three connecting tunnels - of which the Gotthard tunnel is 9.5 miles long. On the southern approach between Airolo and Biasca the line rises 2,750 feet with four connecting tunnels. This most famous route in the Swiss Federal Rail Way network gradually descends from Biascah towards Bellinzona and from there heads via Lugano to the border station at Chiasso... The Mighty Steam
Locomotive BR 44
German Double Feature… High Ball for the German
Mikado 41 018
A (literally!) “steamy” film-portrait of this universal steam locomotive which combines great power with beauty of form. Due to its excellent construction, the 2-8-2 machine - first built in 1936 for fast goods transport - was also frequently used to pull passenger trains. Our film also pays tribute to the 41s wide range of performance. Admire the strength of the 41 018 as she draws goods and passenger trains on trips in summer and in steam-friendly winter (along the Arlberg stretch of track). There is, as always, plenty of footage from the driver’ perspective and from the track, and, of course, this team spectacular is double delight -an audio visual feast - as the fans of DESTI films have come to expect...
The Pride of German Steam 01 1100 Restoring a Great locomotive. Here is the fastest operable steam locomotive of the German Federal Railways today, resplendent in shiny black and red: The patrician 01-1100, a 4-6-2, 196-ton beauty capable of 87.5 mph! She was born in 1940, one of 55 sleek machines built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn. 1956 brought conversion to oil and 19 more years of regular service. Dormant for 10 years, she emerged from the scrap heap in 1985. Still not in the best of health in 1989, she spent 9 months under extensive repair at the Offenburg Repair Depot. You’ll appreciate this insider’s view of the loco’s workings as she is painstakingly brought into top condition in the shops, then started on her first, slow, shake-down runs. Revel with her as she flies on high-speed trips through the verdant German countryside, through the Rhine Valley to Karlsruhe. Behold the glory of double-headed steam when two excursion trains meet at Heilbronn for a joint run to the medieval city of Nuremberg. Later, the 01 1100 valiantly ascends the steep grade of the Frankenwald Forest, assisted by an unusual camel back pusher. See the spectacular camera work of the DESTI-Film team as they catch the loco from every angle, from pounding drivers to pulsing steam exhaust. This visually stunning film builds to a terrific climax of aerial shots following the train through the German country landscapes... 100 Min./PD5320

Almost 2000 locomotives of the BR44 class were built between 1929 and 1949. After 1945, the Deutsche Bundesbahn took over 1242 of these super-heavyweights, and 335 went to the (then East German) Reichsbahn. Between 1949 and 1952 the Bundesbahn had to turn over 344 engines to the French State Railways. By the early ‘60s, more than 500 of these magnificent steam locomotives were still in the service of Deutsche Bundesbahn - this number dwindled down to 300 by 1970 and shrank to 140 in 1975. By 1979 the fabulous BR 44s had reached the end of the line. This engaging DVD will bring back the thrill and awe of a great steam locomotive. In 1990, the German Federal Railways (DB) and Eisenbahn Video set forth to produce an extraordinary documentary of the fast passenger diesel train, VT 601. The result is this magnificent, truly historical video which shows a rail service that, at one time, was a daily connection between 18 major European cities… 55 Min./PD5331 $19.99 19.99 $17.99
Historic Battle of European Supertrain
ICE vs. TGV We are proud to present a truly historical rail event of unparalleled dimensions, the fantastic “Rail-Flight” of the ICE versus the TGV. On May 1, 1988, the ICE (Inter-City-Experiment), the German Federal Railway System’s (DB) newest train addition, set the world speed record of 252 MPH. Seventeen (!) camera teams were on hand to record this historical event from all angles: from the air, inside the high-tech dynamometer car and in the cab. Since September 1982 the cities of Paris and Lyon have been linked by the 170 mph “Train a Grande Vitesse” (TGV). As a result of the TGV’s great success, the French State Railways, SNCF, decided to develop additional high speed trains, and in September 1989 the 185 mph TGV “Atlantic” began its regular service on the route from Paris to the Atlantic coast city of Nantes. One-of-a-kind footage is also included of the TGV’s world record run at 320 mph beating the previous world record established less than two years earlier by its arch rival, the legendary German I.C.E. This superb DVD was produced under the authority of and in close cooperation with the French Government’s railroad authorities SNCF and the German Federal Railways (Deutsche Bundesbahn). 70 Min./PD5319 $19.99 19.99 $17.99
Inter City Experimental to Inter City Express Challenged by the success of the French TGV, German rail builders have taken their already fine system to unprecedented levels of success in the creation of the ICE - Inter City Express. This great film presents an intimate view of technicians at work checking and perfecting this sleek new test prototype in the summer of 1985 (top speed 196 mph). Especially inspiring are also the long stretches of new track, spun gracefully on beautiful new bridges across richly verdant valleys and through new tunnels in hilly countrysides. High on the list of milestones is the achievement of 251.5 mph, a new world record. Our resourceful DESTI-film team inspects the trains from top to bottom, on the road and in the shops. Most impressive is the ICE maintenance facility in Hamburg-Eidelstedt which literally swallows the entire 14 car train, and in one hour completes a comprehensive servicing, interior cleaning, restocking, and exterior washing. So sophisticated is the center that even complete wheel sets can be changed out in minutes… 55 Min./PD5332 19.99 $17.99 $19.99

TRANS RAPID From the “Flying Hamburger” to the ICE 60 years of high speed rail travel in Germany Using a great amount of rare archive material, this film takes the railway enthusiast on a rail journey through time: sixty years of high speed travel with German Railways. We join the most famous and fastest trains that ever ran in Germany. From the heyday of the German Reichsbahn we bring you the mighty 05 steam locomotive, a streamlined monster that could reach speeds of up to 110 m.p.h. - the world record for a steam engine. Then there are the high speed trains of the 1930's which, true to the old Reichsbahn motto "speed is the essence", could reach the 125 m.p.h. mark effortlessly. After the Second World War came the diesel giant VT 601, and the Trans European Express. At the beginning of the 1970's came the trains of the InterCity network and 20 years later heralded the age of the ICE. l this highly informative video covers the development of high speed rail traffic in Germany, from the pioneering spirit of the 1930's to the present day… 60 Min./PD5333

Exciting Rail DVD Productions from All Over the World…
Steam
Last Steam in
in India
This exciting journey along the tracks of one of the world’s largest train countries presents the vastness of India from a new perspective. Every day about 15 million Indians depend on trains for transportation, leaving the camel as second-place competitor in the dust. With holy monkeys on the tracks and non-paying passengers on top of the trains, timetables are an enigma in India. Much of the rail system is a remnant of the English colonial past. Instead of pulling their cars, these locomotives could just as well be on display at the starting point of our excursion: the worldfamous Railroad Museum in Dehli, which boasts of such unusual exhibits as a one-track German train and tiny 19th century French locomotives. Today there are still several different track sizes and more than 4,000 steam locomotives on over 37,000 miles of tracks. From the windows of these crowded Indian trains we catch glimpses of both palaces and severe poverty while passing through the exotic countryside. An additional special treat for steam locomotive fans is a portrait of the Nilagiri Railroad which - laboring under full steam - fights its way to the top of an incredibly beautiful mountain landscape… 70 Min./PD5327

If you ever wanted to find out how much punishment steam engines can take or if you wanted to know how well these same engines can perform while getting dangerously close to the ready-forthe-junk yard stage, then this outstanding DESTI video about the Vietnamese railroad system of today is a must see for you. Filmed under a special government permit this superb video takes you on an exciting 1,000 mile trip from Hanoi to Saigon, the longest continuous narrow gauge mainline in the world, and, quite possibly, the world’s least maintained one, too. The 2-S2, the 2-6-2 T (and on occasion a diesel engine) accompany us through beautiful scenery ranging from the hustle and bustle of colorful cities and villages to majestic coastal mountain ranges… 55 Min./PD5326 19.99 $17.99 $19.99

Steam Adventure
in Ecuador
Thrills and spills with the incomparable Andes railway This "thriller" is the result of the most hair-raising trip the DESTI film team has ever made. The bizarre and often dangerous experiences the team encountered in the Ecuadorian track world as recorded in this unusual film. The result is a thrilling documentary which will leave you spellbound. Climb on board for the trip of a lifetime, on a train ricocheting along a zigzag track, teetering right on the edge of breathtaking chasms, a it climbs to a height of more than 9,842 feet. Among the highlights: the infamous "Devil' Nose", with believably tight curves. The (often terrifying!) rides through the fascinating mountain landscape of the Andes were frequently interrupted by spectacular derailments. But no matter how precarious the situation, we were always on the ball. The reward: fantastic sots from the track and from the cab of the ancient machine as she thunders along, enhanced by glimpses of the picturesque hustle and bustle of life at the stations and in the settlements along the route… An action-packed report from a railway world such as we can hardly imagine. 70 Min./PD5328

In the rich verdancy of the mid-summer, we’ll take the local train (eight stops in 19 miles) through a lush and hilly countryside of villages, farms, and charming wooden depots. Next is a series of runs on various lines in the cold bleakness yet stark beauty of the Polish winter, with snow-dusted forests and ice-laden roads. This is nuts and bolts of steam railroading at its finest. Put on your thickest woolens! Bring a warm hat - here’s your ticket for the last of Polish steam! 120 Min./PD5324 $19.99 19.99 $17.99

Romanian
Forest Railways Transylvanian Steam Adventure This splendid Desti film portraits the forest railways of Romania. In the summer and winter of 1993 we sent our camera teams deep into the Carpathian Mountains, one of the last truly wild and unspoiled regions of Europe to show you many of the steam engines still used today.
Orient Express The very name of this unforgettable train is used to intrigue the public and inspired many a film producer prior to World War II. Since the nostalgia just refused to go away, it came as no surprise that after more than 30 years, the Orient Express was finally resurrected in 1976. Once again this luxury hotel on wheels offered its passengers the utmost in comfort and luxury that could come straight out of Arabian Nights. All aboard! Our nostalgic DVD trip begins in Istanbul. As shiny domes and slender minarets glide by, this exotic region unfolds before our very eyes. On and on we go, through glittering cities like Edirne, Sofia, Budapest and Vienna. Seeing the elegant, completely restored train is a treat in itself, let alone the 14 steam locomotives that have always been a rarity.
Many of the steam engines still used today were built in the 1920s and 1930s. In its heyday in the 1950s, the 760 mm gauge forest railway network was virtually the only method of transport through the Carpathian's. Today many of the lines have been closed and those lines that are still operating are in bad condition. Going by steam train on these lines can be something of an adventure. 65 Min./PD5323 $19.99 19.99 $17.99

Wildlife Expeditions Stunning, high caliber, one-of-a-kind nature films which have earned award-winning acclaim. . . River Kingfisher – The Hunt for the Flying Diamonds
The Airfield of the Speckled Ground Squirrel. There is an old airfield on the outskirts of a large Polish town. Together with light aircraft and test helicopters, many animals have made it their home, especially the European Speckled Ground Squirrel. 11,000 of these relatives of the common squirrel family live between the runways and the adjacent meadows. One of them is called Marcin, a young male, who is experiencing his first summer together with his siblings and his mother. Animal film director Marion Pöllmann presents an informative insight into the adventurous life of a fascinating little animal.
This story takes place in Germany, on a little tributary of the Rhine river. Here, living inconspicuously, is one of the most fascinating, shy and stunningly beautiful birds: “The Kingfisher” also called the “Flying Diamond” because when the sun’s light is at its best it makes the plumage gleam like colorful diamonds. Since the antiquity, myths have been surrounding the azure blue Kingfisher. This is a fascinating, oneof-a-kind nature “docudrama”. The action is lively, the never-before-seen footage is amazing and so is the hunt for the flying diamonds. Truly, a must see nature film.

This nature film is the fascinating journey into the forest of the black storks. Never before has the life of these shy and very seclusive birds so well been documented before…

Rendezvous with Death The Cuban Connection Immediately after President Kennedy’s assassination on November 22, 1963, the FBI dispatched a high-ranking agent to Mexico City to investigate Lee Harvey Oswald’s activities there a few weeks earlier. However, only three days later, newly sworn-in president Lyndon B. Johnson abruptly called off the investigation. FBI agent Lawrence Keenan was ordered back to Washington and sworn to lifelong secrecy in this matter. The reason for Johnson’s swift action (as told by Alexander Haig): He suspected Fidel Castro to have played a role in the assassination. He reasoned that if the American people were ever to find out the truth about the involvement of arch-enemy Castro, there would be chaos all over the United States and an immediate call for war. Furthermore, Johnson feared that in case of war the Democrats would not be electable for many years to come. 42 years later, well-known German historian, author & film maker Wilfried Huismann, together with retired FBI agent Keenan went on a fact-finding trip to Mexico. Their goal: to trace back the trail of the halted investigation four decades earlier. Their journey proved successful. They located a number of witnesses that had not been interrogated at the time nor since then. One such witness was Oscar Marino, then lead investigating agent of the Cuban Secret Service G-2. He agreed to an interview and confirmed Huismann’s theory that Oswald was not a fanatic psychopath but Fidel Castro’s willing tool in Cuba’s deadly duel with arch-enemy John F. Kennedy. The many years of research for this film also yielded incriminating insights into the secret service files of both the Russian KGB and the Mexican DFS. Equally revealing was the discovery of a number of secretly recorded phone conversations originating from inside the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City . Of the many interviewed witnesses presented in this one-of-a-kind historical film drama the following „heavyweights“ stand out:
US Troops Battle for Cologne and Access to the Rhine Previous top secret US Army combat footage is presented throughout this outstanding, historical DVD production… The riveting events documented in this superb, truly one-of-a-kind historical DVD take place in Cologne, the largest German city captured by US troops during World War II. In early March 1945, advancing combat troops of the US Third Armored „Spearhead“ Division entered the outskirts of the totally bombed-out dead city of Cologne. They encountered sporadic resistance from a small number of fanatic followers of Hitler’s brutal „DurchhalteBefehl“, the order to fight to the last bullet. Two days later, the GIs had reached the banks of the Rhine river. Here at the foot of the world-famous Cathedral, a dramatic tank encounter took place. Shortly thereafter, the battle for Cologne was over.

Additional Background Information: Eight months after D-Day, US troops were on the cusp of a rapidly nearing, long-awaited milestone, the capture of Cologne and access to the river Rhine. The impending battle has dominated the headlines of the world press for days. Dozens of correspondents (including young Stars & Stripes reporter Andy Rooney), photographers, and cameramen had been closely following the combat US troops to report in great detail on the unfolding dramatic events. Based on several years of extensive, painstaking research substantially aided by the excellent cooperation of the US Army Archives in St. Louis, MO, the National Archives in Washington, DC as well as a large number of international source material, the well-known Cologne Historian and producer Hermann Rheindorf also conducted numerous never before released interviews with both, German and American surviving participants and witnesses of the fateful tank battle in the shadow of the cathedral.
