HISTORY OF CALDWELL

DEEP ROOTS

Historical Caldwell, Texas CALDWELL, THE COUNTY SEAT OF BURLESON COUNTY, IS AT THE INTERSECTION OF STATE HIGHWAYS 21 AND 36, IN THE CENTER OF THE COUNTY Texas Congress annexed to Milam County all of Washington County north of Yegua Creek and west of the Brazos River in 1840 and, at that time, Caldwell was designated as the county seat of this new Milam County, that would come to be known as Burleson County. The town of Caldwell, named for Mathew Caldwell, was laid out along Old San Antonio Road, west of Davidson Creek. This site encompassed a settlement founded by Lewis L. Chiles. Until Burleson County was formed in 1846, Caldwell served as the county seat of Milam County.

By 1856, the population of the town was 300, and the Caldwell House, known as one of the finest hotels in Texas, was the temporary destination for many travelers along the Old San Antonio Road. Caldwell also had a post office, male and female academies housed in the Masonic building, Baptist and Methodist churches, seven general stores, a saloon, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, and a courthouse. By 1878, Caldwell published their own newspaper, known then as the Caldwell Register. The town also boasted a bottling works and an ice house.

Caldwell was incorporated in 1891 with a mayor and city council form of government, that continues today. The city maintains a library that was established in 1976, a municipal airport that came along in 1968, five parks, and equipment and housing for a Volunteer Fire Department that was originally organized in 1886.

The first school of record was a Male and Female Academy established in 1844.

During the Reconstruction period, a company of State Police was ordered and stationed in Caldwell. A company of the Texas National Guard was also headquartered in Caldwell from 1898 through 1940. Caldwell was the smallest town in Texas at that time to have a full infantry company. The soldiers were volunteers from Caldwell, Somerville, and rural parts of the county. Many of these men were captured by the Germans at Salerno, Italy, in 1943 and were prisoners of war until the Germans surrendered in 1945.

AREA ATTRACTIONS Davidson Creek Park boasts activities for the entire family, even duck families.

Davidson Creek Park is located off of Highway 36 at South Wright Street in Caldwell and online at www.caldwelltx.gov/departments/parks-and-recreation.

In an effort to bring books and the gift of literacy outside the doors of the Harrie P. Woodson Memorial Library and to reach further into the community, the city of Caldwell is working with local nonprofits and businesses to establish 11 Little Free Libraries in Caldwell’s nine public parks, as well as at the Civic/Visitors Center and Caldwell’s public library.

Little Free Library is a nonprofit that builds community, inspires readers, and expands book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led little libraries by encouraging participants to place book-exchange boxes within their community.

“In a large city, patrons will be served by library branches which are strategically placed to reach citizens that live in out-lying areas,” added Heidi Frazier, community development program coordinator. “In effect, these take-one/leave-one boxes, erected in each of our parks, will serve as our city’s library branches.”

A Little Free Library will be installed in the nine public parks in Caldwell, including Davidson Creek Park, Santa Fe Park, Freeman Park, KC Field, Shaw Street Park, Molly Street Park, Noack Field Park, 7th Street (Duff Street) Park, and Woodson Park. The city of Caldwell will now be joining those who have placed over 100,000 Little Free Libraries that are in more than 100 countries, sharing 42 million books annually, as part of Little Free Library.org.

avidson Creek Park is a green space filled with activities for the entire family. It is open to the public and maintained by the City of Caldwell. Visitors of the park can enjoy a variety of ammenities and activities including: fishing ponds, horseshoe pits, washer pits, soccer fields, baseball fields, batting cages, covered basketball court, covered pavilions, picnic tables and charlcoal grills, shaded seating, walking and jogging trails, playground areas, and a 9-hole disc golf course.

“This exhibit is simply the beginning of this large project. Our next step is not only to install these libraries, but to offer free programs to the public with each ribbon cutting, to be held in the next few months,” said Frazier. Although there is no cost to attend the art exhibit, visitors are encouraged to donate any new or used book to be placed in the Little Free Library of their choice.

AREA ATTRACTIONS For over 35 years, Dr. Joe Carlyle Smith’s sculptures have been an attraction that’s hard to miss when one is driving along TX 21 in Caldwell. The eye-catching art pieces stand out, encouraging one to stop and explore the unique, imaginative creations.

Visitors enjoy viewing Dr. Joe Carlyle Smith’s sculpture named Impossible Dream.

One of the most notable pieces is of a man’s head on a goose’s body standing on one leg called Impossible Dream.

Other works by Smith can be seen in Caldwell at the McDonald’s restaurant; the Civic Center, 103 TX 21; and at the Harrie P. Woodson Memorial Library, which once housed Dr. Smith’s medical office, at 704 TX 21.

“We have a sign up that says JLyle Medical Clinic and Gallery, located at 501 N. Stone,” added J. Griffis Smith, son of the late Dr. Joe Carlyle Smith. “My Dad came up with JLyle as his artist name so when he put art up at his clinic the patients would not know he did them and he liked hearing their true opinions. Tours available by appointment. Leave a message at 512-294-4997. Half of the house is a clinic and the other half is a gallery or museum of his paintings, photography, and sculptures.”

Harrie P. Woodson Memorial Library is a progressive library that serves the entire county.

In 2013, a concerted effort was made to build the farmers market on the square in downtown Caldwell in support of the Main Street project growth. Originally called the Caldwell Texas Farmers Market, the name was changed in 2018 to Burleson County Farmers’ Market.

The market is open from 7 a.m. to noon every Saturday, year-round, rain or shine. The Burleson County Farmers’ Market usually has three to 20 vendors from Burleson County, as well as adjacent counties. When garden production is at its peak during the summer, farmers meet at the pavilion on Buck Street on Wednesday evenings to provide produce to the public in the shade.

Nichole Hejl hosts a truck market in Snook at County Road 269 and Farm to Market 2155 Spur next to the Watering Hole (the old grocery store) typically from May through July on Wednesday evenings.

Burleson County Farmers Market is open from 7 a.m. to noon every Saturday, year-round, rain or shine.

Joe Hairston has a truck market at the corner of Farm to Market 908 and Highway 21 during the spring, summer, and fall.

Vendors are encouraged to read Texas Cottage Food Laws also as these are the governing rules for farmers markets across the state. The Burleson County Farmers’ Market supports local growers in Burleson County and adjacent county growers. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The congregation of the First United Methodist Church, organized in 1840, is one of the oldest in Texas. It was one of 12 appointments on the Nashville Circuit, Galveston District, Republic of Texas. Samuel A. Williams was the presiding elder, and Robert Crawford was the Circuit rider. When Caldwell was designated as the new county seat of Milam County in 1841, the commissioners named to select the site donated “certain lots … for the purpose religious worship.” Accordingly, on September 18, 1841, Elder Williams appointed trustees to receive title to the property for the Methodist Episcopal Church.

hings get tasty every year in Caldwell on the second Saturday in September. The annual Caldwell Kolache Festival, on the square downtown, offers dance, song, food, crafts, period costumes, children’s activities, classic cars and beautiful quilts. The festival symbolizes the warmth and fellowship of the Bohemian people. They are proud of the heritage they honor and kindly invite you to this wonderful celebration of the kolache (pronounced ko-LAH-tch, with no “ee,” in local dialect).

WHAT THE FESTIVAL IS ALL ABOUT “The festival is about celebrating the kolache,” said Janice Easter, festival chair of the Burleson Chamber of Commerce sponsored event. “We have a bake show where youth, adults, and professionals can enter multiple categories. You can also purchase kolaches from vendors that come from all over Central Texas to sell their homemade wares at the festival.”

Dating all the way back to 1984, the festival started off small, however it didn’t take long for visitors to catch on that there really is something special going on at the Kolache Festival.

“

“We went from tiny to a giant explosion,” shared Easter. “There were four or five years, consecutive years, where we had over 25,000 people, and the kolaches …

I know that they sold 1000s of dozens, and that’s a lot!

INGREDIENTS 6 cups all-purpose flour ½ cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar, divided 1 ½ cups warm evaporated milk 4 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 ½ teaspoons salt ¼ cup butter or margarine, melted 1 egg plus 2 yolks, well beaten 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind

Use Old Czech Method Dough Recipe and fat for greasing pie pan or baking sheet.

In addition to the kolaches, the festival also offers activities and entertainment for both the young and the young at heart.

PREPARATION Sift flour into large bowl. Make a well in the flour. Put one teaspoon sugar the warm milk, and yeast in the well. Let stand about five minutes.

“We have wholesome music all day,” added Easter. “We love polka music; who doesn’t? I’m 100% Czech, so I grew up with it. We also have approximately 250 vendors, arts and crafts and food. We have a kiddy land so, if you have small children, there is something for them, as well. There’s an antique tractor and machinery show, and a classic car show at Davidson Creek Park under the shade trees. It’s a beautiful setting.”

Add remaining sugar, salt, butter, eggs, vanilla, and lemon rind.

Mix and beat well with a wooden spoon. Sprinkle top lightly with flour, cover, and let rise in a warm place about 1 ½ hours. Then use dough for frgáls or kolaches.

Cottage Cheese Filling: 16oz. cottage cheese 6 tablespoons butter 2 egg yolks ½ cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar 2 egg whites, beaten 2 tablespoons raisins Apricot Filling: 5 cups dried apricots 2 cups sugar 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon almond extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon Form into a pie or kolache shapes, about ½ inch thick. Place on greased pie pan or baking sheet.

Spread filling no more than ½ inch thick. Bush edges with egg white and bake in preheated 3250 F oven for thirty minutes.

Built in 1891, the tour gives visitors a look at the home’s superior craftmanship and a unique glimpse at what life was like during this period in Central Texas. In addition to the historic home, festivalgoers can also vote on their favorite quilt in the Kolache Festival’s Quilt Show.

Historic Refurb ICONIC LONGHORN SALOON UNDERGOES COMPLETE RENOVATION, AWAITS NEW TENANT

I

f you’ve visited downtown Caldwell recently, you’ve probably noticed significant progress in the restoration of the Longhorn Saloon. Father and son team, Luke and Burton Speckman, are partners in the family venture that owns the iconic building and are heading up the restoration project.

“It was a much grander renovation than we expected,” shared Burton.

“The original brick was in such poor condition. It was literally melting from the moisture it was exposed to over the years. From what I was told, the roof had leaked for forty or fifty years. It still had the original roof from the 1880s on it when we went to replace it. It had just been patched and patched and patched.”

FIRMLY PLANTED IN DOWNTOWN CALDWELL ‘We’ve always wanted to get involved with downtown Caldwell,” said Burton. “We looked at several buildings over the years and it never worked out.

Finally, we were able to acquire the Longhorn Saloon and we’ve owned it for about a year and half. It took just shy of two years to close on it.”

“We were told that everyone came to play dominoes there,” added Luke.

“And we still have those tables. We were also told that, when it rained and the roof leaked, the men just tilted their head and let it run off the bill of their cowboy hats without interrupting the game.”

THE COMMUNITY GETS INVOLVED

Feeling his son’s frustration, Burton’s dad could easily relate to the acquisition pains that came along with purchasing the saloon.

“We didn’t know if we would ever close on it, but it finally happened,” said Luke. “We thought we’d bought a building but what we really bought was only a lot and three walls. We hadn’t counted on starting over on the foundation. The back wall was also a nightmare. We quickly realized we had bit off a whole lot more than we were planning on, but it is a really cool building. It stands out from everything else in town.”

The Speckmans learned a lot about their new venture through physical discoveries in the structure itself, as well as from local residents who were eager to share their memories of the Longhorn Saloon.

“It’s been so much fun working in the old building,” said Burton. “One of the people that came by was John E. Hejl. His grandfather was Mr. Kallus, the man who bought the building in 1895; there’s a sign on the front with his name on it. He bought it from another man that operated a mercantile

TALK OF CALDWELL there. Mr. Kallus operated it as the Iron Front Saloon, a name reflecting the cast iron Mesker façade on the front. Right now, all we lack is the renovation of the façade itself. We’ll be tearing off everything that is not original to try and make it look as close as we can to pictures from the 1900s.”

“I was so amazed at how many people are interested in the saloon and love it as much as we do,” added Luke. “Locals have given us really good feedback without us even having to ask for it, telling us, ‘We need a steakhouse, we need a nice place in Caldwell.’ That’s what we’re leaning to trying to find as a tenant, some type of food related business.”

FINDING HIDDEN TREASURES Early on, while removing the subfloor, Burton made a few discoveries that they plan to turn into art in the future establishment.

“We found over 100 bottles beneath the floor that were intact,” shared Burton. “Some that went all the way back to the mercantile days. One of the bottles was from Galveston Brewing and was embossed with, ‘A Meal in a Bottle.’ We also found many that are from Caldwell Bottling Works.

Our goal is, once we have our tenant in place, to create a historical display with the old bottles inside the old saloon.”

We figure it was probably sponsored by a beer company, as was common during that period. It was in really bad shape, but we could make out a landscape with a big lake. Very little survived but we’d really like to restore it like it was. We’ll need to find an artist that can do that.”

STAYING TRUE TO THE SALOON’S HISTORIC PAST Although the final outcome may be a bit different than local residents remember, staying true to the original structure is imperative to the Speckmans as they work out the final details on the establishment.

“We’re working with the Main Street board to get new renderings and new choices on how the front should look,” said Luke. “We’ll be raising the front porch because where the roof is now is not where it was originally – it was three or four foot higher. We’re going to raise the canopy really high like it was originally, as well. We’ll have to add eight-foot doors and transom windows, things that were there before. It’ll be a really different look compared to what people are accustomed to. And, in the future, it won’t be orange. We’re not sure yet on what color it will be, but it won’t be orange!”

CZECH HISTORY MUSEUM TOUR

Keeping their Heritage Alive BURLESON COUNTY CZECH HERITAGE MUSEUM PRESERVES THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE

The 1863 home that the museum is housed in displays period clothing and items one would have found in a home during Caldwell’s early days. The house was donated by the Polasek Family in 1993 to the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum.

The Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum was started in 1992 by a handful of charter members and continues to operate today with the purpose of promoting and preserving the unique heritage and culture of both the Czech in Europe and the Czech settlers in this area of Texas.

“We started the museum in Caldwell as a way to display relics from our past ancestors,” said Daniel Junek, current treasurer and past president of the museum board. “The items on display came from just about everywhere. People would read about the museum and donate items. That is how it grew to

The house that the museum resides in was built in 1863 and donated by the Polasek family in 1993. It was the dream of George Hlavinka to restore the historic house and, aided by Anton Haisler, was completed two and a half years later. Together with the Carriage House, adjacent to the home, the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum is able to display not only household items but also historical pictures, ship manifests, examples of Czech currency, maps of Prague, paintings, handmade pieces of art, dolls and children’s toys, and period clothing.

“One of my favorite items is the dulcimer,” added Birdie Kristoff, secretary of the museum board. “They are nice instruments and I enjoy hearing them played. There was a visitor that was able to play a little bit on it one time.”

“The printed fabric is a favorite of mine,” added Dorman Pullin, president. “It was made with something similar to a stamp pad. After taking regular cloth, they dyed it a certain color and then stamped the pattern on. Can you imagine sitting down and trying to have the patience to do something like that?”

Today, the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum members continue the hard work of maintaining the museum grounds, giving out an annual scholarship to the Queen of the Kolache Festival, and teaching the cultural heritage of the Czech people to anyone who will listen, and with a good reason.

CZECH HISTORY fices that our ancestors made for us to be sitting here today. I think about what it was like for them to leave their country, their home, and go to a new world. They sacrificed a lot to leave and come here to a big question mark. I enjoy it when the young people come here and see what life was like for our early settlers. There was no running water in the house. Instead, folks had to drop a bucket into a well and haul their water inside. Children had to get up early and help in the barn. Cows had to be milked, you had to bring in eggs. I remember my own mother out in the field with us, picking cotton.

It wasn’t easy. I also want them to understand what family was like back then. The family values, you know. When you sat around the table for a meal and your family was there. Someone’s extended family may be within only 30 or 40 miles.”

The woman represents a Slavic goddess of winter and is associated with death. Therefore, her destruction symbolizes the beginning of new life in spring. After taking the figure out of the village in a solemn procession, Morana is set on fire and then thrown into the water by singing girls; bottom, these spoons on display in the kitchen of the museum are a good example of the artistic abilities of the Czech people and their desire to decorate everything, even everyday items.

urleson County, Texas is located in the middle of the Texas Triangle between Houston, Dallas/ Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio. The City of Caldwell is the county seat, a small rural community about 25 miles west of Bryan and College Station.

The population of Caldwell remained relatively stable from 1940 to the 1970s at just over 2,000. Caldwell’s population had increased to 3,449 by 2000, driven by the economic bases of oil, agriculture, and livestock.

Today, Caldwell has reached an estimated population of almost 4,400.

Population projections for the county show continued growth over the coming decades, given the county’s relatively high birth rate, and that this new generation will be the most diverse in the history of the county.

The community has grown over the past couple of years due to the Eagle Ford Shale oil boom, and due to its location in the fast-growing Brazos Valley, Caldwell is expecting more growth. One of Burleson County’s most important natural resources is the Wilcox-Carrizo aquifer. Burleson County has a significant portion of the remaining water resources of this long belt of underground drinking water. In terms of natural hazards, Caldwell is at lower risk from hurricanes than coastal Texas communities, but significant portions of the two state highways passing through the city are located within the 100-year flood zone. MEET THE NEIGHBORS CHRIESMAN - Chriesman is on the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway just west of State Highway 36, seven miles northwest of Caldwell in northwestern Burleson County. Chriesman is now a virtual ghost town with only one original commercial building still standing – the old post office. Front Street Burgers, the only operating business in Chriesman, is located at 8137 County Road 315, across the railroad tracks. If you’re in the mood for one of the best burgers you’ve ever tasted, take the short drive over.

BRENHAM - What do alpacas, a cotton gin, live music, wineries, award winning barbecue, comfy beds and long strolls on historic streets have in common? They are just a few things you will discover when you take the 32-mile drive south down Texas 36 from Caldwell. Prepare yourself for inspiration around every corner— look for the giant, modern murals that adorn Brenham’s historic buildings.

CHRIESMAN LAKE SOMERVILLE - Four units make up Lake Somerville State Park. Birch Creek Unit is on the north side of the lake, while Nails Creek Unit is on the southwest side. The 13-mile Lake Somerville Trailway connects the two units. Birch Creek and Nails Creek offer access to the lake for fishing, boating, paddling and swimming. On land at either unit, you can camp, picnic, hike, ride mountain bikes, geocache, and go birding. Visitors can also explore miles of multiuse trails. Anglers here reel in hybrid, largemouth and white bass; crappie; and catfish. You don’t need a fishing license to fish from shore or jetty in a state park, but you will need one to fish from a BRENHAM boat. Birch Creek has a fishing jetty.
