As the judge of Burleson County, and on behalf of the Burleson County Commissioners’ Court, it is my great honor to welcome you to our beautiful county. We are glad you have taken an interest in our county, and we hope that you will take time to explore the area.

Burleson County is a great place to live and visit with a strong rural lifestyle feel. This rural lifestyle as well as increasing business opportunities is leading to unprecedented growth in our county. Increasing real estate values and interests are fueling economic growth in retail and commercial development as well. In addition, Burleson County has an extraordinarily strong and diverse agricultural industry that includes grain, cotton, produce, and livestock. These agricultural ties are part of what gives Burleson County its small-town charm.

The Burleson County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present our 2021/22 Visitor’s Guide/Membership Directory.

Burleson County History It‘s amazing how much history can be in one county. Burleson County is still mostly a rural county in most areas, and while we may not boast the biggest towns, we do boast some great history and bragging rights to one of the best places to live in the state!

Burleson County was truly born on El Camino Real. What is now State Highway 21 across the county was the main route of the Camino Real beginning over 300 years ago. It is highly likely that every well-known character from Texas history traveled through Burleson County. But the real significance of our County began in the 1700s with a small Spanish guard post on the Brazos River. That guard post soon became Mexican territory. It was not lost to travelers throughout history that Burleson County was the midway point on the Camino, halfway between Natchitoches, Louisiana, and Laredo on the Rio Grande.

Burleson County was a well-known rest stop in those early days. In fact, the Davidson Creek crossing shows up on historic maps as a common spot for travelers to stop and camp. The route served missionaries, soldiers, government officials, Native Americans, explorers and settlers alike.

Burleson County has been inhabited for some 13,000+ years with prehistoric and historic Native Indian tribes. The Tonkawa, Apache, Comanche and other tribes were part of the migrating Rancheria Grande area as the various tribes drifted back and forth during hunting seasons. A series of springs along the north side of Highway 21 provided the right conditions for Indian encampments.

By the 1830s there were already a few settlers in the County around the Cooks Point area and along the Brazos River. During the early 1830s a Mexican Fort was established on the Brazos River, Fort Tenoxtitlán, and it was destined to be the capital of Texas. It was commanded by Colonel Jose Francisco Ruiz who was later one of two native Texans to sign the Declaration of Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos in 1836. Unfortunately, the Fort was a failure for numerous reasons and the Mexican government was never able to proceed with plans for a completed fort, or presidio, or town, much less a capital city. A land office was established for a time on the river for new settlers seeking property in the Sterling Robertson Colony.

And once again, it was the route of the Camino Real through Burleson County that played a major part for travelers and as a growing trade route from Louisiana to San Antonio.

By the time Texas won its independence in 1836, Burleson County was becoming more and more settled. Alexander Thomson had arrived at Fort Tenoxtitlán in 1831 with a wagon train from Tennessee.

Along with Horatio Chriesman, they settled Yellow Prairie, which is around the Chriesman area, even though they weren’t supposed to be allowed into Mexico.

Early settlers obtained land grants along the Camino and the cluster of settlers around Davidson Creek soon became the town of Caldwell and platted out by surveyor George Erath. While Burleson County was named for Edward Burleson, a prominent figure of the Texas revolution and later a vice president of Texas, Caldwell was named for Mathew Caldwell, another prominent figure during the Texas revolution. Officially designated as a town in 1846 and as the county seat, a Burleson County Courthouse was erected shortly afterwards.

The county has had several courthouse buildings on the downtown square, with our present courthouse being built in 1928. Downtown soon boasted stores for hardware, dry goods and groceries, along with hotels, blacksmiths and livery stables. And a post office!

The town of Caldwell grew as settlers came across the Brazos River looking for a rich farm land and gently rolling hills that was good for all means of agriculture. Settlement around the old Fort area, now the Rita area, became one of the first settlements as well as Caldwell.

During the Civil War, Burleson County supplied several regiments of Confederate States Army soldiers. During the reconstruction period after the war, more small communities in rural areas started popping up. Many of these communities were settled by locally freed slaves, or people newly arriving from other states, and they established churches, schools, stores and cemeteries.

By the 1870s Burleson County had a huge surge in population resulting from Eastern European immigration. Immigrants from the eastern Slavic countries of Czechoslovakia and “Prussia” regions of Europe, along with German and Italian immigrants, came into this area seeking farmland and the eventual opportunity to own property of their own. Many of the Italian settlers obtained land along the Brazos River. The German community sprang up more in the Snook area, while Frenstat and New Tabor were predominantly comprised of Czech immigrants and many of their descendant still live in those areas.

ty’s culture. One of the unique things in Texas is the preservation of certain cultural traditions from county to county. Burleson County, host to the annual Kolache Festival, is certainly a prime example of honoring ancestors and teaching future generations about their Czech heritage.

It was particularly important to the settlers who started coming into Burleson County, especially those from Europe, to have religious freedom. Burleson County has many different denominational churches. Mexican settlement of the county did not begin until around 1900 and a lot of those families came into the Somerville area. By the time they started arriving, the railroad was offering new opportunities in the Somerville area.

Burleson County residents continued to build their towns with merchants offering any variety of stores and goods for sale, but the predominant business in Burleson County has always been agriculture. The area has provided rich farmland for crops as well as cattle, sheep and goats.

During World War I, there were about 1000 people from Burleson County in the military and 37 died for our freedom. Many were part of the Texas-Oklahoma boys of the U.S. Army’s 36th Division. Burleson County has always been a very patriotic county and has contributed in every means of peace and war.

During the 1940s, with the onset of World War II, Burleson County stepped forward as no other county has. Over 1300 men and women

served in the US military during World War II, with over 400 being from the city of Caldwell alone. Fifty men were lost during World War II. Many women served in defense plants on the homefront. A main part of the county’s World War II contribution was the 143rd infantry, Company E, of the 36th Division, which was a reserve unit called up to active duty during the war. Burleson County was the only county in Texas to supply a complete infantry company of men. These men landed at Salerno, Italy, and several were captured, and several others were killed.

After World War II, the county flourished with new businesses and expanding old ones, and the addition of a hospital. The city of Somerville grew with the tie plant and in the 1960s, the development of Lake Somerville as a means of flood control along the Yegua Creek provided a new recreational lake and park for local and state residents. Highways 21 and 36 were paved during World War II, and both provided better travel throughout the county. In the late 1970s and early 1980s an oil boom blossomed in Burleson County and many residents prospered greatly from this new discovery. Oil made a resurgence in the late 2000s and has become a major industry in the county.

While most people think that the key to success is progressing as fast as you can, that‘s not necessarily true in Burleson County. Residents in the county know and love their history and are proud of the many ethnic heritages represented. Honoring our ancestors and our milita-

ry history is what we do. We are proud of our farmers and ranchers…and of the merchants and citizens that have made it such a great place to live.

Burleson County is still basically a rural county with close knit family ties and community ties, and sometimes it takes knowing your past to really appreciate what you have in the present. Like those early settlers, we understand the opportunity that is in Burleson County, and that it’s not just another rest stop on the road.

Caldwell Independent School District is located in Burleson County and is classified as a 3A district. CISD serves over 1,700 students and employs approximately 275 teachers and staff. CISD comprises four campuses that include Prekindergarten through twelfth grade, along with an Alternative Education Center. Andrew Peters has served as the district superintendent since 2016. The district recently completed $40 million dollars of facility improvements.

Our district offers highly qualified Prekindergarten, bilingual, gifted and talented, Pre AP and AP courses, dual credit, Career and Technical Education, OnRamps, foreign language, and honors courses. Our students have been honored with numerous academic accolades, such as Caldwell High School being awarded “Best High Schools Ranking 2020” by US News and World Report. Our Career and Technical Education has many outstanding programs, such as welding, cosmetology, culinary arts, and health sciences in which students can earn certifications that will enable them to successfully join the workforce upon graduation.

CISD’s Fine Arts Department provides a diverse program that includes music from grades Kindergarten - 3rd grade, band for grades 6th -12th, art, dance, and floral design. Our bands have earned top UIL ratings, along with CHS Band being awarded the Support Music Merit Award for the NAMM Foundation. Our Flora culture qualified for the 2021 state competition for the first time in CISD history.

CISD Athletics includes an expansive girls’ and boys’ sports program for every season. Students can participate in football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf, track and field, soccer, and power lifting. Our sports programs are competitive and successful, qualifying and winning many area, district, and state competitions, such as the Lady Hornet Golf Team earning the 2021 UIL 3A State Bronze Medal.

Our district also offers many opportunities for students to participate in clubs and student organizations, which fosters well-rounded and enriching experiences. Students have been awarded many top and prestigious awards and have been recognized locally, state-wide, and nationally for their accomplishments, such as with BETA Club, National Honors Society, and Future Farmers of America. FFA students started a bass fishing team and they earned the 2021 Bass Fishing Team qualifying for state for the first time.

Somerville is one of many railroad boomtowns that started as a station stop beside the tracks of a railroad built in Texas from 1870 to 1900. In 1880 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company of Galveston, Texas, built the first railroad bridge over Yegua Creek. People from all over the United States and other countries came to Somerville to work for the railroad or to start businesses, and in 1903 the Somerville Independent School District was established.

Location: The Somerville Elementary school is located at 700 8th St. in Somerville. This campus is home to the Pre-K through 4th grade students. Upon reaching the 5th grade, students will attend the Somerville Intermediate school. From 8th grade to 12th grade, students will attend Somerville High School located at 570 8th St. Our number one goal is to provide high-quality instruction for all through academic and post-secondary success, through proficiency in reading and math, and implement programs aimed to support college and career readiness in a safe and secure environment.

Somerville S omerville began in 1880 when the Santa Fe railroad was being extended north from Brenham in Washington County, the higher land north of the Yegua Creek (approximately midway between Brenham and Caldwell) was designated as a new town site. The town was named for Albert Somerville, the first president of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad Company.

Somerville is home to beautiful Lake Somerville, which affords guests a total of seven parks (four Corps of Engineers Parks, two State parks, one privately owned park) to choose from.

Lake Somerville has 85 miles of shoreline, encompasses an area of 33,000 acres of land and water. Fishing, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, sail boating, swimming, hiking, and camping may be enjoyed. Lake Somerville attracts a great number of visitors annually.

omerville is located near the southern border of Burleson County. The city is bordered to the west by Somerville Lake, a reservoir on Yegua Creek, part of the Brazos River basin.

Texas State Highway 36 passes through the city, leading northwest 17 miles to Caldwell, the county seat, and southeast 15 miles to Brenham.

The Santa Fe Tie and Lumber Treating Plant was built in 1897 and was leased to the Texas Tie and Lumber Company until January 1905. In February 1906, Santa Fe Company resumed control and the plant has been in continuous operation since that date. In March 1995, Kopper’s Industries purchased the plant.

nook is located in the southeast section of Burleson County between College Station and Lake Somerville on Farm to Market Road 60. This small community was incorporated in 1972 and continues to thrive today. Czech and German immigrants settled in the areas surrounding Snook around 1880 and established their own community including a church, school, and lodge just west of present-day downtown Snook. At that time the community was called “Sebesta’s Corner” or “Sebesta” after one of the early families.

During the 1890’s the community wished to establish a specific identity for their town and decided the best way to do this was to obtain a post office. There was already a post office in the nearby community of Dabney Hill. A law was in existence that precluded two post offices being within a certain number of miles of each other. Through the aid of John S. Snook, Postmaster at Caldwell, the Dabney Hill post office was relocated halfway between Sebesta’s Corner and Dabney Hill. The “new” post office was then name Snook, in recognition of the man who arranged the move. As time passed, the community began to cluster around the post office and nothing remains of the original settlement at “Sebesta’s Corner” one mile west.

There are a few businesses that have their specialties such as Sodolak’s Original Country Inn known as Home of the Chicken Fried Bacon and large size steaks. If you want to wet your whistle stop by the Snook Watering Hole located in downtown Snook where it has a laid-back atmosphere and believes in supporting the local community. The Snook BBQ Co. is a newly open business with years of experience of hometown BBQ, cooked over live coals by pit master Matt Collins. Slovacek Foods LP Store has a bakery known for the kolaches, pie and their fresh cut meat. There so much to enjoy in Snook!

ANNUAL SNOOK EVENTS Chilifest attracts some of the biggest names in country music for a two-day chili cook-off and concert.”

Attracting more than 30,000 people each year. Chilifest gives back to area organizations such as Burleson County Go-Texan, the Boys & Girls Club of Brazos Valley and the Snook Volunteer Fire Department. In August, Hospice Brazos Valley’s annual Hog Splash is a muddy volleyball tournament sponsored by Slovacek’s Sausage. All proceeds support the continued care of Hospice Brazos Valley’s patients and families. The Snook Volunteer Fire Department holds a barbeque and auction the fourth Sunday in August to raise funds for improvements of the Department.

Explore Caldwell Caldwell, the county seat of Burleson County, is at the intersection of State highways 21 and 36, in the center of the county.

The community was founded in 1830 and named after Matthew “Old Paint” Caldwell, veteran Indian fighter, Texas Ranger, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Citizens enjoy the best of both worlds, close to the greater Austin and Bryan-College Station areas with their cultural and recreational advantages, and yet content with the rolling green countryside near Lake Somerville amidst the trees, flowers, horse farms, and smalltown lifestyle.

In addition to major highways, Caldwell serves two railroads and a municipal airport with a runway 3,252 feet long and 50 feet wide equipped with pilot controlled medium intensity lighting and PLASI. The automated weather observation system can be accessed on 118.350 or by phone (979-567-6784).

UNICOM is 122.900; AVGAS (credit card only) and terminal building are available 24/7. The airport is located 1 ½ miles west of the courthouse off SH 21 West on Hull Street. Easterwood Airport at Bryan-College Station is 25 miles away and offers daily flights to Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Industry is diversified. Major employers include Non-Ferrous Extrusions, Allied Precision (precision metal fabrication), Caldwell ISD, Wal-Mart, BASF, and City of Caldwell.

he Burleson County Farmers’ Market is a popular attraction for local farmers to provide local, fresh produce to the residents of our county for many years. You will find a large selection of fresh vegetables, fruit, honey, jams, pickles, salsa, eggs, coffee, breads/baked goods, processed meats/poultry, and much more. Our market has become a regular destination for our residents not only for fresh produce but also for great conversation and fellowship just like barber shops in the old days. Vendors are set up on S Echols Street in front of the Burleson County Courthouse, located in historic, downtown Caldwell. The market is every Saturday all year from 7 am to noon.

HISTORIC DEANVILLE DEPOT

Burleson County is ingrained in an abundance of Texas history. The Deanville area is a part of that era, beginning in 1840 when Horatio Chriesman, one of Stephen F. Austin’s chief surveyors, decided to become the first settler on the banks of the Yegua River, what was to become the county’s western boundary. Chriesman donated fifteen acres of land to be used as a church/school and a cemetery, presently called Chriesman Chapel Cemetery.

It was in 1872 that local entrepreneur, James Dean, decided to open a trading post to serve the drovers of the Chisholm Trail, of which Burleson County was a thoroughfare. At that time, most of the terrain was open prairie land with good grazing and an abundant supply of fresh, spring water. A good resting spot for the cattle, before moving the herd north to the Kansas rail heads. Dean saw an opportunity to sell supplies locally, rather than the drovers having to go the ten miles to Caldwell. At the same time, emigrant farmers came to Burleson County and began settling in the area. When a post office opened in 1873, they named the small community Deanville.

In 1880, Santa Fe railroad opened a line from Houston to Temple, serving the north/south communities of Somerville, Lyons, Caldwell and Chriesman. In 1913, Houston and Texas Central railroad opened an east/west line from Giddings, incorporating the communities of Deanville, Caldwell, and Cook’s Point. In those days, to be on the railroad route was a huge advantage. Not only was there passenger service to each area, but also mail service, merchandise, lumber and hardware, livestock and food supplies.

Soon Deanville became a major trade area for western Burleson County with a school, 2 churches, 3 cotton gins, a cotton warehouse, bank, doctor’s office, pharmacy, 2 32

mercantile stores, 2 blacksmith shops, 4 garages, 2 grocery stores, and ice house, barber shop, lumber yard, post office, fraternal lodge, and some 200 inhabitants.

In the 1950s, railroad’s diesel engine locomotives replaced the old steam engines, which could only travel 10 to 15 miles before having to replenish its water supply. Also, by then, highways were paved and truck hauling was becoming

PRESERVING HISTORY more accessible. This lead to better access to towns, jobs, and businesses. By 1970s, the Deanville community had regressed to a population of 100, as had the communities of Lyons, Clay, Chriesman, and Cooks Point.

The Deanville depot is the last surviving depot of the ten depots that operated in Burleson County. The crown jewel of Burleson County’s depots was the beautiful brick, stucco, cobble stone building that was located at the corner of Buck St. and Stone St. Somerville had the honor of having the Harvy House, a grandiose building that housed a five star restaurant and hotel that served the railroad passengers.

Both of these structures have disappeared in the name of progress.

By fate, the Deanville depot is the last remaining depot in the county. Even though it is the smallest, it is the only depot building that will represent the other depots.

Reconstruction work began in 2013 when Andrew and Robin Rudderow offered the building to the Deanville community. Local residents, Bennie and Tammie Jones, donated land on which it was placed. ach year in September, young participants of Snook, Caldwell, and Somerville come together as exhibitors at the Burleson County Fair! Exhibitors bring their best in our livestock divisions, including: swine, broilers, turkeys, market heifers, rabbits, goats, lambs, steers, and commercial heifers. The Burleson County Fair also provides opportunities in other areas, such as: Ag Mechanics, Creative Living, Baked Goods, and Horticulture.

Beginning in June, fair memberships go on sale and our fair queen candidates work hard to make sure everyone in the county has an opportunity to purchase one. Fair Queen candidates earn $3 from each ticket they sell for their own personal scholarship money. On Sunday evening, a Burleson County Fair Queen is crowned at our live pageant to serve as the official ambassador throughout the week of the fair. Alongside her is also her Little Miss who is also crowned at the Little Miss Contest.

Friday evening is the live Commercial Heifer sale, followed on Saturday evening with the live Livestock Auction. Hundreds of supporters throughout the county show up to generously support the youth of Burleson County. After each live auction, head down to the pavilion to listen to live music and dance the night away.

Come join us this September as we kick off this year’s County Fair with the Burleson County parade through downtown Caldwell!

Fields of Cheer Paint the County Yellow S

unflowers are one of life’s little pleasures. The bright, cheery flowers evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia, whether spotted at the farmers’ market or in a gorgeous centerpiece. When you visit a massive field with rows and rows of them on display, however, sunflowers become one of life’s pleasures. If you’ve never visited Wilder Family Sunflower’s field in Snook TX, put it on your late spring/early summer bucket list! Located near Snook in Burleson County, the farm is now something of a local tourist attraction with visitors stopping by daily to see and photograph the thousands of sunflowers that can grow to 8-10 feet high.

Every year around Memorial Day weekend, fields of yellow begin to attract the attention of passersby. Jay Wilder and family have a sunflower field near Snook that is literally growing in popularity. The Wilder Family Farm has been in operation since 1912 and a few years ago, Jay Wilder, decided to put a new addition to the 2,500-acre farm and its cotton, sorghum and soybean crops. He planted about 300 acres of sunflowers and the results have been profitable – and certainly colorful.

Although pretty to look at, Wilder, along with his sons Jayce and Spencer and his father Joe, harvest the huge sunflowers to make birdseed. He has contracted with the H-E-B grocery store chain to sell the seed through its Hill Country Fare line.

“I thought we would give it a try a few years ago,” said Wilder, whose family also runs a cow-calf operation. “Commodity prices were down. Raising sunflowers seemed like a good idea and it’s

worked out very well. The work they require is much less than cotton and other crops.”

With the success of the growing seasons being seen by so many, Wilder is overwhelmed with how many are coming out to see the flowers. “I had no idea how many people would come,” he said. “I knew there would be some, but it’s been hundreds.”

Passersby who are interested in stopping for photos are welcome to do so, but he did say visitors should be aware of the abundant presence of bees and asked that the flowers not be cut. The Wilders’ sunflowers can be found along the corner of FM 60 and FM 50.

Witnessing acres of massive sunflowers lined up like sunny soldiers is a truly awe-inspiring experience. We are so lucky to have some of the prettiest sunflower farms right here in Burleson County.

“

There’s just something about sunflowers that bring a smile to people’s faces,” Wilder said. “It makes me happy to see the community enjoying it and this has drawn attention to ag and that’s always a positive.”

Burleson County Agriculture

Agriculture is a very important and diverse industry in Burleson County, with the annual farm receipts of $60 million, ag ranks second in gross income, behind energy production. Of that 60 million, 38% is from sale of crops and 62% from livestock and poultry and other ag related receipts. Pastureland makes up 60% of all the ag land used by farms, followed by 20% cropland, and 16% woodland.

Twenty-seven percent of the county is employed in some area of agriculture.

Agriculture in Burleson County consist of beef and forage production, row crop production, watermelon, and wildlife.

There are approximately 1600 farms in Burleson County which comprise 361,022 acres of land. The average size farm is about 200 acres. Many of these ag producers are multi-generational farmers and ranchers that have learned from their parents and grandparents and continue to evolve and thrive in their operations.

Beef and forage production annually contributes the largest portion of agricultural income in Burleson County.

Agriculture producers are always looking for ways to increase profitability through improved efficiency, increased output, or decreased input expense. Production and subsequent harvest of high-quality forages are key to improving animal performance. Crop production in the Brazos Valley continues to be a significant contributor to total agricultural receipts.

The following acreages were certified with the USDA-FSA in Burleson County in 2016: corn – 13,237; cotton – 12,342; grain sorghum – 4,300; hard red wheat – 1,948; oats – 1,605; soybeans – 1,064; alfalfa – 79.

Seasonal price fluctuation is affected by multiple items like carry-over stocks (domestic and global), governmental

relations, weather patterns and agricultural production levels of other nations.

WHAT MAKES BURLESON COUNTY AGRICULTURE SO UNIQUE IS THAT THE RESIDENTS OF THE COUNTY EMBRACE THEIR RURAL HERITAGE. The Family Land Heritage (FLH) program is a recognition program that honors families who have owned and operated a continuous agricultural operation for one hundred years. Every year Texas Department of Agriculture hosts a ceremony at the Texas State Capitol to celebrate and commemorate the families who have passed down their proud Texas legacy from generation to generation. Since the program’s inception in 1974 forty-one families from Burleson County have been honored by this program.

As Burleson County continues to grow in numbers, agriculture remains a major industry to the county.

Lake Somerville L

ake Somerville is a US Army Corps of Engineers reservoir, about 15 miles from Caldwell, Texas.

Like most reservoirs, the primary purpose is to provide water for irrigation and city usage, but a side benefit is a gorgeous place for outdoor fun in Central Texas.

You can enjoy hiking, shore fishing, and mountain biking in cooler but comfortable temperatures during winter. RVers from colder climates often spend a week or two camping at Lake Somerville for warmer temperatures.

exas has notoriously mild winters and sweltering summers, so the best time to visit depends on what you’re trying to enjoy at the time.

Fall yields splendid weather for camping and kayaking. Many days are moderate enough to enjoy a hike or other outdoor activities, and there’s always the lake if it gets too warm. Therefore, late September, October, and early November are the most popular for camping.

Spring is another high-demand time of year for these campsites. The weather is perfectly moderate, and gorgeous wildflowers dot the park, making it ideal for campers more interested in hikes and scenery than water sports.

Hot summer days can be scorching, but the refreshing lake is tantalizing for swimming and water sports. May and June see the highest rainfall, so campers should check the weather before heading out. It’s a more popular time for RV campers who have a roof over their heads and can enjoy air conditioning when it gets too warm.

All For the Czech More than 30 years separate them, but Zach Zgabay and Joe Rychlik have more in common than their Czech last names.

Both men share a love of their Czech heritage and culture that will be on display this year at the 36th Annual Kolache Festival Sept. 11.

Natives of Caldwell, Zgabay and Rychlik have formed a friendship and bond over language—the Czech language.

Just two years ago, Zgabay would have been hard pressed to say more than a few phrases like “Jak Se Mas,” or “Pivo” in Czech, but after learning about Czech language courses offered at Blinn College, he found a passion for his history and began the journey to becoming proficient in Czech with a little help from Rychlik.

“I just kind of fell into that,” Rychlik said. “He called me about something for church and that kind of started the whole thing. He’s just

very interested in learning the language, and he just didn’t have anyone to talk with. He can’t practice enough. Other than me, there’s not really anyone to speak to in this area. For the hand full of people who are trying to learn the language, there’s really nowhere to use it.

“I kind of wish I had done what I’m doing now 10 or 20 years ago, maybe I would be a lot more fluent than I am now, but it’s never too late,” Zgabay said. “I’ve always been proud of my fa-

mily’s Czech heritage, the Czech culture in general, but you don’t really see the importance of that until you get along later in life.”

This year during the Kolache Festival, Rychlik along with Zgabay will offer the traditional welcome to visitors to the Kolache Capital of Texas in the native Czech, something that Rychlik has traditionally done. Growing up in the New Tabor community, which was probably 90% Czech, Rychlik and his brother Bernard learned Czech in their home. But theirs was likely the last generation to learn Czech in the home from their parents and grandparents.

“The Czech speaking and Czech understanding, not that many folks are doing that anymore,” Rychlik said. “I wish there were, but there aren’t.”

Much like other immigrants, Czechs often discouraged their children from learning the language so that they would fit in with the wider population of English speakers. Even in mixedlanguage company, Rychlik said his family members would refrain from speaking Czech so people would feel comfortable.

etteville and Praha was a secondary language, so the younger generation knew less and less about how to understand or speak Czech, so festivals like Caldwell’s annual Kolache Festival still celebrate Czech heritage, but without the Czech language.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, Joe is a 10,” Zgabay said. “I would be a 1 or 2, if even, as far as the language goes. I see myself as the years progress to definitely become more involved. I definitely see myself taking a leadership role somewhere down the road. I also want to honor people like Joe. I don’t want to step on any toes, and Joe’s are some big shoes to fill. I don’t know who is out there, after Joe’s generation, who can do what he does.”

Rychlik kicked off each festival for many years with the traditional Czech welcome. He served on the Entertainment Committee and the King and Queen committees. He has eaten more than a few kolaches, and he has danced the night away to traditional Czech music.

“For many years, it was just a lot of fun,” Rychlik said. “Mainly we just went into the Kolache Festival wanting everyone to enjoy the day, enjoy Caldwell and enjoy presenting it.”

His love of his Czech heritage has made Rychlik the perfect spokesperson for the Kolache Festival. Now, Zgabay has channeled some of that passion and love for all things Czech.

“So, the Kolache Festival, and the Czech culture in general, I’m becoming a zealot is the best way I can put it,” Zgabay said. “It all began two years ago I started a little personal crusade of keeping the culture alive, promoting it, gro-

“Bernard and I were the only two grandchildren from my mother’s side who spoke Czech and understood it,” Rychlik said. “My grandmother would admonish us often that if we were talking Czech with her and someone came up who didn’t understand the language, we needed to talk in English so as not to offend anyone. So, we would do that. We just learned to be nice about using our language and not make somebody think that you’re talking about them.”

wing it. I don’t want it to die. This literally comes down to honoring what came before and promoting it for the future.”

He has become an active member of the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum, offering blessings in Czech before luncheon meetings.

His work to become proficient in the Czech language, with the help of weekly texts and phone calls with Rychlik, has helped, and Zgabay is determined that Caldwell’s Kolache Festival will not suffer the fate of so many other Czech heritage festivals that are now pretty much in English.

“I feel like if you lose three things about the heritage—the religious aspect of it, the food and the language, then the Kolache Festival will be just like any other festival,” Zgabay said. “Why not call it a Watermelon Festival?

What’s going to separate that? Nothing. We can all look the part, but I really feel like if we lose the language, then it’s lost. ” The last time the Kolache Festival took place was in 2019. The Festival was on hiatus because of COVID-19. So the 2021 Festival will move into a new post-COVID era.

“I look forward to seeing what it will be this year,” Rychlik said.

MRS. NEMECEK’S KOLACHES Dough: 2 envelopes active dry yeast ¼ cup lukewarm water 1 tbsp. sugar 2 cups milk ½ cup plus 1 tbsp. butter ½ cup sugar 2 tsp. salt 2 egg yolk, slightly beaten 6 ¼ cup sifted flour Softened butter, as needed In a small bowl dissolve yeast in warm water. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar and let stand. Scald milk in saucepan. Remove from heat and stir in butter and ½ cup sugar. Cool to lukewarm. Add salt and egg yolks. Combine milk mixture and yeast in a large bowl. Bit by bit add the flour until all has been used. Knead dough on a lightly floured board until glossy.

Place in bowl, cover and let rise in warm place (80 degrees) until doubled in bulk (about 1 hour). This dough will not be quite as stiff as a roll dough.

Now, using a tablespoon, take egg-sized bits of the dough and roll into balls on the floured board. Place on greased baking sheet about 1 inch a part. Brush each with softened butter.

Let rise again, covered, until light.

Make an indentation in each large enough to hold 1 tsp. of the fruit filling below. Sprinkle fruit in turn with some of the topping below. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Remove from oven. Brush again immediately with softened butter. Cook kolaches on a wire rack.

Makes about 3 ½ dozen.

Filling for Kolaches

Poppy Seed Filling: 2 cups ground poppy seed 1 cup milk 1 ½ cups sugar 2 tbsp. flour 1 tsp. vanilla or almond flavoring Heat milk in skillet and when it boils, add sugar, flour, and poppy seed; cook till mixture thickens. Add flavoring. Cool before spreading on kolache dough.

T HE GE M O F S O M E RV ILLE Somerville Historical Museum In the Introduction to the book “The History of Somerville”, the city founded by Albert Somerville, the very first line reads: “Some memories are like jewels in the mind of man.”

To walk into the Somerville Area Museum is to walk into a hall of jewels, each jewel a memory. That is exactly why the museum was founded in 1979 by Barney Davis. He and his wife Pam were the guiding lights for the founding of the museum. A room in the museum is named after him and features a bronze bust of him.

The vision of Barney Davis was to give future generations a place to examine their past and to illustrate the life and events of the past of Somerville and surrounding area. This was accomplished through the participation of the community who donated historical documents artifacts, furniture, tools, other items and funds.

The museum is housed in two early 1900’s adjoining sandstone buildings. You can explore the town’s railroad historic past through historic photographs, memorabilia, military exhibits, farm, school and pioneer artifacts.

The museum is entered from the back of the building. Upon entry you can almost hear the sound of the train whistle as a mannequin attired in railroad worker overalls, looks straight at you.

An array of railroad and tie plant memorabilia and photos also greet you. In the same area you can smell the coffee brewing as a Harvey House waitress stands there dressed in a long black skirt and blouse with a crisp white apron with attached bib and starched white collar. The table is set according to specifications set out by Fred Harvey, restaurant founder: sterling silver flatware, white linen tablecloth and a rose vase at the table.

The museum features a Sanctuary area with a long church pew, communion utensils, pump organ, all from area churches.

Move on to the Ladies and Children’s area and you pass by the Somerville Post Office area with boxes that had a combination.

Proceed from there to the beauty shop featuring an electric hair wave permanent machine. A room filled with military uniforms and paraphernalia are on display. Of note is the WWII German Army helmet.

Since the population of Somerville has been diverse since before the turn of the century, a display case features artifacts of the early Mexican community. Prominent in this display is the Cruz Azul banner that belonged to the Cruz Azul social society.

This was a social service group whose role was to welcome the Mexican immigrants who were arriving in the area. There are photos of the members in their white uniforms fashioned from the same Society in Mexico. Also, there is a group picture of children who attended the Mexican school as well as the Hispanic baseball team and fiestas patrias posters.

A work in progress is the exhibit recognizing the Afro American community and their presence and role in the growth of the city. The Emmitt J. Scott cornerstone from the school for blacks is exhibited as well as a yearbook and group school picture.

The museum has an extensive school exhibit. High School yearbooks date back to 1945 to the present. Senior class pictures hanging on the wall date back to 1911.

The museum is located at the corner of Highway 36 and 8th Street. It is surrounded by a beautiful park like area known as Heritage Square. Most prominent at the square is the monument honoring WWII veterans from the area.

Adjacent to the museum is the stucco jailhouse and the printing press used to print the Somerville Tribune, the weekly newspaper.

The Somerville Area Historical Museum is the “gem of Somerville.” It is run by the Somerville Historical Society and is 59

A Guide to Burleson County Historical Groups

Burleson County Historical Commission The Burleson County Historical Commission is appointed by County Commissioners’ Court to serve two-year terms.

Every County in Texas has a CHC under state law and they are an arm of the county government. The Burleson CHC works under the guidance of the Texas Historical Commission in Austin, and participates in many state programs, as well as their own projects. Most notably, CHCs are responsible for

securing local Texas Historical Markers and Historic Texas Cemetery Designations.

The Burleson CHC maintains the Burleson County Historical Museum in the county courthouse, gives tours, assists individuals and other groups with historical and family research, records archeological sites, and much more.

They sponsor Burleson County Heritage Week each March to celebrate the county’s birthday, and an Archeology Awareness week each October.

The Burleson County Cemetery Book and “Burleson County..Back When”, a county timeline book are available through the CHC. Meetings are called, posted and held at the courthouse, six times a year. All meetings are open to the public, and anyone interested in more information may call the Burleson County Judge’s office at 979567-2333.

The Burleson CHC is always looking for people who demonstrate a certain degree of historical expertise and interest to represent the county on the local and state level, and help preserve vital historical resources.

Burleson County Historical Society, Inc. The Burleson County Historical Society, Inc. was formed as a non-profit organization in 1979. They published the award-winning county history book entitled “Astride the Old San Antonio Road: A Pictorial History of Burleson County.” Reprints are still available from the BCHS. The BCHS owns the historic Kraitchar House Museum, an 1891 restored Victorian Cottage which boasts both a Texas Historical Marker and a National Register Marker. The Kraitchar House, which as a wedding gift for Thomas Kraitchar Jr. and his wife, is available for parties, weddings, shoers, etc. Member of the Society are eligible for discount rates. Tours can also be arranged.

The BCHS also hosts several “First Friday Luncheons” throughout the year.

Meetings are during odd months at 7 pm at the Kraitchar House on the corner of Buck and Porter Streets in Caldwell, and hosts a brown bag lunch at noon during even months. Locations vary for lunch meetings so please call ahead.

A potluck picnic is held once during the summer as well as a Thanksgiving Dinner in November. Everyone is invited to attend meetings and meals.

Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum The members of this group sponsor and maintain the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum on Fawn Street in Caldwell. Through the restored Polasek House, they can show visitors a traditional Czech homestead, furnishing, and also assist with family research.

The group is active in a number of events throughout the year, including Founders Day in March, A Food Tasting Party in April, a very popular Ice Cream Social the 3rd Thursday in July, a Pre-Kolache Festival Party the second Friday night of September (the night before the Kolache Festival), Czech Heritage Month in October, and Christmas Tea the first Sunday of December.

Meetings are held in the cozy Carriage House on the Museum grounds on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm. Guests are always welcome!

Somerville Historical Society The Somerville Historical Society is committed to preserving the history of the area of southern Burleson County.

The society will assist in doing family or community research for Somerville, Lyons and other surrounding communities.

They meet on the 2nd Monday of each month, September

through May at 11:30 am with a luncheon and business meeting.

Meetings are held in the Heritage Room of the Somerville Area Museum at the intersection of Highway 36 and FM 1361. The Somerville Area Museum is open on Saturdays from 10 am – 12 pm and 1 – 3 pm or by appointment. Caldwell Visitors Center Museum The Caldwell Visitors Center Museum is open every day in the Civic Center at the corner of State Highway 31 and Main Street. Filled with city antiquity, the museum tells the history of the early pioneers of Burleson County, and the financial and community growth of the City of Caldwell. On display is artifacts from former businesses, school memorabilia, and individuals that made the City of Caldwell what it is today.

Burleson County Czech Heritage Society

As a chapter of the larger state group, the Burleson County Czech Heritage Society is proud to promote and preserve Czech heritage in the county. With most members being of direct Czech descent, it’s not hard for this group to keep traditions alive and well in Burleson County.

They host a Czech Heritage Dinner and Dance in October for Czech Heritage Month.

Quarterly meetings are held at the Cooks Point Community Center at 2 pm. Meetings are advertised in the local newspaper. The Czech Heritage Society awards a yearly scholarship to a graduating senior in the county of Czech descent. They also sponsor girls for local, state, and national Miss Czech-Slovak competitions.
