BOERNE From our beginning nearly 170 years ago through today, Boerne’s European roots remain evident. From our architecture to our spirit, you will experience why Boerne is one of the most visited destinations in the state as you stroll along our famous Hill Country Mile.

Architecture

Throughout historic downtown, many iconic buildings have been painstakingly restored to their architectural pasts. Beloved heritage buildings have been repurposed as art galleries, boutiques, bistros, bakeries, and specialty stores where you can enjoy visiting our local businesses while imagining the storied pasts of these treasured buildings.

Art

Our thriving art and cultural scenes bring

visitors from all over to experience our local galleries, enjoy outdoor public art, and experience live musical, dance, and theatrical performances. (Pg 46)

Dining

Boerne’s talented chefs produce a diverse mix of cuisine whose intoxicating aromas fill the air with enticing options like Lobster Mac, authentic Schnitzels, Thai tacos, and traditional Southern fare. Dozens of restaurants around town offer everything from a romantic, upscale experience to a casual, outdoor setting with play areas for the kids. (Pg 28)

PURESÓLSPA & SALT CAVE USA TODAY Travel Media Group, “10BEST. com” ranked Puresólspa as #1 of the 10 best spas in San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country, and it’s easy to see why! Puresólspa has its roots in Poland, home to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, where 1M international visitors seek treatment each year in the mine’s rehabilitation rooms to treat respiratory, cardiovascular and stress-related illnesses. Owner Beata Huzarska Hatley’s father d e s i g n e d and built coal mines and was an instructor at Poland’s AGH University of Mining and Metallurgy, where he began noticing that workers in the salt mines were spared the ailments of those in the coal mines and would begin making “wellness” his life’s mission. Beata continued her father’s quest for

wellness after moving to the United States, where she has spent more than two decades embracing the tradition of naturally caring for the health and beauty of the body and the soul, including creating of her own Eco-Certified, organic product line where her belief is that beauty is literally skin-deep. Located at Tapatio Springs Resort, Puresólspa is a fullservice space for men and women that offers therapeutic salt cave sessions, body treatments, a n t i - a g i n g facials, signature massages and other specialized services. New services include Yoga in the salt cave, as well as singing bowl therapy, meditation and breath work all offered inside the gorgeous surrounding of the salt cave and its detoxification benefits. TAPATIO SPRINGS HILL COUNTRY RESORT The Texas original, Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort, just 5 miles from downtown Boerne, is a Resort and Golf Club focused on big-hearted service and a comfortable and inviting lifestyle. With exceptional golf course upgrades, and the 2019 Clubhouse rebuild currently underway, there’s no better time to check out the new Club memberships. The Tapatio Springs Golf Course renovation transformed San Antonio’s original destination resort. All of the improvements were envisioned and overseen by Tripp Davis and Associates, known for their unique, handson approach to the restoration of historic courses around the world. The 18-hole championship golf course is truly a thing of beauty. It is tremendously fun to play and challenging for all skill levels. All 18 holes provide dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views of some of

the tallest hills in the area at 1,900 feet. And now, opening summer 2019, the new Clubhouse will serve as the hub for relaxation, respite, and reconnection featuring La Cascada Table & Bar with indoor/outdoor dining and twice the space, a private dining room with amazing views, and a purpose built stage under the live oaks. It will also feature double the event spaces, a new arrival porte cochere, member-only fitness center adjacent to the locker rooms, a significantly larger Pro Shop, and abundant natural light throughout. Add that to the new Tapatio Springs Mobile Kitchen, private Members Pub, poolside dining at Double L Bar, and the year-round heated swimming pool, and there’s never been a better time to join The Club.

IN THE DIENGER TRADING CO KITCHEN: CHEF JAMES BRUNNER What do you enjoy most about cooking in The Dienger Trading Co. kitchen? I can use my creative side along with the mastering of flavor profiling I have picked up along the last 20 years. We have a solid team going into the busy season and I am also excited to execute our new seasonal menu. What inspired you to become a chef and who are your influences? My influence is Kurtus Franklin, a Master Chef who has been under the radar for 30 years. Also, Paul Bocuse who was a Master French Chef who was known to push the boundaries. I look at myself as a modernday Paul. What are your favorite dishes and what is your favorite to cook? My Favorite thing to cook at The Dienger are the daily soups and

specials that inspire daily innovation. My style is in sweet and savory dishes because they are exciting, and I don’t see any chefs today going for it. I am bringing my Latin Fusion Style to Boerne featuring both classical and traditional culinary styles. Anything new to look out for at DTC this year? New menus, wine pairings and upcoming events that feature outstanding cuisine.

Art al Fresco, an “art on loan” program, is an outdoor public art competition that temporarily places sculptures throughout historic downtown Boerne’s Hill Country Mile and nearby Trail System. Ten sculptures are in place until March 2019, when a new exhibit will be installed. Enjoy a walking tour of the sculptures in the heart of Boerne and become part of the art by VOTING for your favorite(s)! The experience engages the senses when paired with the free Otocast app, where patrons learn about the sculptures through recorded narratives from the artists themselves.

In addition to Art al Fresco, don’t miss Boerne’s permanent public art pieces, scattered throughout the downtown area, which include a bronze statue of Wild Bill Hickok at Main Plaza and “Father Gander” on River Road. Great for visitors and locals alike, be sure to make our public art a part of your visit to downtown Boerne! For detailed information please visit artalfresco.org, download the Otocast app or get a free brochure at the Patrick Heath Public Library, Boerne Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Hall, Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce and retailers along the Hill Country Mile. For more information and updates join us on Facebook at Facebook.com/BoerneArtalFresco.

THE “HUB”

Many guests select Boerne as their “hub” during a visit to the Texas Hill Country because of its convenience to major airports, as well as the short distance to many other historic Texas towns. With gorgeous, year-round weather and a sunset that paints the Texas sky a vivid hue of orange, some people decide that they never want to leave! However, if you do get around to venturing out for the day, some of our recommendations are:

Austin (90 min.) The capitol of Texas, visit the Texas S t a t e Capitol, the Bob

Bullock Museum, and 6th street, home to a multitude of live music venues, bars, and restaurants. Find multiple parks, Lake Austin, and don’t miss the LBJ Library on the campus of the University of Texas.

Bandera

(30 min.) The self-proclaimed “Cowboy Capitol of the World” is a throwback to the days of the Old West. Bandera was the starting point of the Great Western Cattle Trail during the latter 19th century. Today, the town is known for its abundance of saloons, honky-tonks, dude ranches, Main Street shopping, and its fierce loyalty to the Cowboy way.

Bergheim

(10 min.) An unincorporated town whose German name means “Mountain Home”. Home of the famous Bergheim General Store (founded 1903), O’Brien’s restaurant, The RoundUp Outdoor Music Venue, and the Guadalupe River State Park are nearby.

Camp Verde (45 min.) The 1854 site of Jefferson Davis’ “Texas Camel Experiment”. Robert E. Lee was said to have laid out the grounds, officer’s quarters, and camel pens while stationed in the area. The present-day incarnation of the site is a fabulous world-class shopping and dining destination with treasures from all over the world. Comfort

(15 min.) is famously unincorporated, and that’s exactly how the locals like it! A large number of 52 | VisitBoerne.org

antique dealers, whimsical retail stores, wineries, and eclectic eateries make up the historic downtown district, where nearly every building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fredericksburg

(45 min.) is a Germanheritage town that is home to many national museums and attractions including the National Museum of the Pacific War, the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park and LBJ State Park. There are also dozens of wineries, shops, and art galleries, events and festivals, many of which celebrate German heritage. The Rockbox Theater, a Branson-quality live music venue, is a favorite for all ages. The beloved 200-acre Wildseed Farms is a don’t-miss attraction as well. Luckenbach Texas— the nostoplight town that Willy, Waylon and the boy’s made famous—is just down the road too.

Kerrville

(30 min.) sits along the banks of the Guadalupe River, which meanders its way through the middle of town. With a vibrant cultural and arts scene, Kerrville has a great downtown area where you will find many of the retail stores, art galleries and restaurants. The Museum of Western Art and The Kerr Arts and Cultural Center are popular with art

THINGS TO DO patrons. The headquarters of James Avery Craftsman is also located in Kerrville, where they have exhibits and a retail showroom.

New Braunfels German-heritage

(55 min.) This fellow town offers great

shopping and dining, and famous “tubing” along the Comal River. There is also the famous Gruene Historic District, which features world-renowned honkytonk, Gruene Hall. Some of our first settlers to Boerne emigrated from New Braunfels, and we continue a shared history of our European influences. They host popular events including the famous WurstFest.

San Antonio

(20 min.) Vibrant, historic San Antonio is filled with world-class museums, the hip Pearl Brewery, cultural attractions, dining, shopping, and family activities including Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, Sea World, the Alamo, the historic missions, and the world-famous River Walk. Nearby La Cantera S h o p p i n g C e n t e r offers luxury shopping in an outdoor, al fresco mall setting.

Sisterdale (15 min.) A once-thriving center of German abolitionism and Unionism, it became a quiet hamlet after the Civil War. Today, it features Sister Creek Vineyards, Saint Tryphon Farm and Vineyards, Sisterdale Saloon, and a handful of wonderful artisan shops. Also, don’t miss out on Blackboard BBQ!
