About the Cover:
Boerne’s new 10’ x 15’ postcard-style mural stands ready to pose with you for “selfies” on the side of the Corner Cartel building at 265 S. Main. The mural is courtesy of long-time Boerne residents, Paul and Nancy Holekamp, who incorporated Boerne architecture into the original design. Reminiscent of dime-store postcards from another era, the mural was painted by Mike Vanderburg and the staff of Circle H Signs. Floral crowns are from The Flower Shop.

fan? Visit the beautiful paths along the banks of the Cibolo Creek in River Road Park that boasts great fishing spots, and the Old No. 9 Trail railroad route that brought early visitors from San Antonio to Boerne. Art al Fresco, Boerne’s public art program, features sculptures along both trails and around the city bringing art alive with curated sculptures from professional artists. South of the Cibolo, you’ll find stunning historic buildings, including St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, which was completed in 1923 and modeled after San Antonio’s Mission de la Purisma (1730). Stop by the 153-year old Phillip Manor, and across the street is the Victorian-style Carstanjen House, or Mansion House. Veterans Plaza is also nearby. Whether you have three hours or three days, downtown Boerne is the perfect way to experience Hill Country hospitality.

WHAT'S COOKING? WHO'S COOKING? Boerne is home to some of the top restaurants in the Texas Hill Country, and many are helmed by award-winning, nationally-known and internationallyheralded chefs. Peggy's on the Green, located inside the Ye Kendall Inn, is a Southern-inspired restaurant from chef Mark Bohanan, the chef/owner of the highly-regarded prime steak and seafood restaurant in downtown San Antonio that bears his name. Peggy's on the Green features contemporary interpretations of southern heritage food and classic American dishes. This is one of the most popular "date-night" restaurants in the area. Meanwhile, if it's German food you are in the mood for, the popular Little Gretel Restaurant features authentic German and European specialties from Executive Chef Denise Mazal. She's been featured
in regional and national media for her kolaches, schnitzels and other specialties. She also creates regular themed-dinners throughout the year, and uses the most authentic and freshest ingredients.
Where Boerne finds good wings made fresh. We believe the secret to being the best place to eat in Boerne is to make great food, make it fresh every day, charge reasonable prices, provide excellent service & a fun sports-bar environment.

PURESÓLSPA & SALT CAVE
Puresólspa has its roots in Poland, home to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, where 1M annual visitors seek treatment in the mine’s rehabilitation rooms for respiratory, cardiovascular and stress-related illnesses. Spa owner Beata Huzarska Hatley’s father designed coal mines and instructed at Poland’s AGH University of Mining and Metallurgy. Living near the mine, her father noticed that salt mine workers were spared
the ailments of those working in the coal mines. He subsequently began an interest in wellness that his daughter continued after moving to the U.S. Beata has continued caring for the body and soul, and has created an organic, Eco-Certified product line. Located at Tapatio Springs Resort, Puresólspa is a full-service space for men and women that features therapeutic salt cave sessions, where the negative-ion charged climate allows you to naturally absorb the rich minerals as you breathe. Other services include body treatments, anti-aging facials and signature massages. New services include Yoga, singing bowl therapy, and meditation and breath work inside the gorgeous surroundings of the Salt Cave. Also, Puresólspa now offers spa memberships and packages.

THE ARTS Art al Fresco and Boerne’s Public Art Program
Enjoy Art al Fresco, Boerne’s walkable art adventure, where you can get up close and personal with large-scale sculptures placed throughout the historic Hill Country Mile, Boerne’s trail systems, library and more. Unlike a traditional gallery, we encourage guests to touch and take photos with the sculptures, and challenge you to learn something new about the various mediums, shapes and inspiration behind the art. After you enjoy a walking tour of the sculptures, become part of the art by VOTING for your favorites via our online survey, or at voting boxes around town. The fourth Art al Fresco exhibit will be on
display until March 2020. In addition to Art al Fresco, don’t miss Boerne’s permanent public art pieces, s c a t t e r e d throughout the downtown area, which include a bronze statue of Wild Bill Hickok at Main Plaza and “Father Gander” on River Road. Great for visitors and locals alike, be sure to make our public art a part of your visit to downtown Boerne! For detailed information please visit artalfresco.org, or get a free brochure at the Patrick Heath Public Library, Boerne Visitor Center, City Hall, and Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce. To learn more and join in the conversation, follow Art al Fresco on Facebook and Instagram.

THE HILL COUNTRY "HUB”
Many guests select Boerne as their “hub” during a visit to the Texas Hill Country because of its convenience to major airports, as well as the short distance to many other historic Texas towns. With gorgeous, year-round weather and a sunset that paints the Texas sky a vivid hue of orange, some people decide that they never want to leave! However, if you do get around to venturing out for the day, some of our recommendations are:
Austin (90 min) The capitol of Texas, visit the Texas State Capitol, the Bob Bullock Museum, and 6th street, home to a multitude of live music venues, bars, and restaurants. Find multiple parks, Lake Austin, and don’t miss the LBJ Library on the campus of the University of Texas.
Bandera (30 min) The self-proclaimed “Cowboy Capitol of the World” is a throwback to the days of the Old West. Bandera was the starting point of the Great Western Cattle Trail during the latter 19th century. Today, the town is known for its abundance of 58 | VisitBoerne.org
saloons, honky-tonks, dude ranches, Main Street shopping, and its fierce loyalty to the Cowboy way.
Camp Verde (45 min)
The 1854 site of Jefferson Davis’ “Texas Camel Experiment”. Robert E. Lee was said to have laid out the grounds, officer’s quarters, and camel pens while stationed in the area. The present-day incarnation of the site is a fabulous world-class shopping and dining destination with treasures from all over the world.
Fredericksburg (45 min)
is a German-heritage town that is home to many national museums and attractions, wineries, shops, galleries, and annual events, many which celebrate German heritage. Wildseed Farms, the nation’s largest working wildseed operation, and famous Luckenbach Texas are must-visits while in the area.
Ingram (45 min) is nestled on the banks of the Guadalupe between Kerrville and Hunt. Historic Old Ingram Loop is a working artists’ colony along the banks of the Guadalupe River. While you’re
THINGS TO DO
there, check out Stonehenge II—a lifesized replica of the original one—which sits on the grounds of Ingram’s Point Theater.
Kerrville (30 min)
sits along the banks of the Guadalupe River, which meanders through town. Kerrville has a vibrant downtown filled with retail stores, art galleries and restaurants. The Museum of Western Art and The Kerr Arts and Cultural Center are popular with art patrons. The James Avery Craftsman headquarters is also located outside of town.
New Braunfels (45 min)
is a fellow German-heritage Hill Country town that offers a variety of shopping, dining, and events that take place throughout the year, including popular WurstFest. Some of our very first settlers emigrated from New Braunfels, and we continue a shared history of our European influence.
San Antonio (20 min.) Vibrant, historic San Antonio is filled with world-class museums, the hip Pearl Brewery, cultural attractions, and family activities including Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, Sea World, the Alamo, the historic missions, and the world-famous River Walk.
AROUND THE COUNTY Kendall County is home to Boerne, Bergheim, Sisterdale, Comfort, Waring and Welfare. Our county neighbors offer some gorgeous views, dance-halls, shopping, dining, and places to relax and take in the beauty of a Texas Hill Country sunset or a star-filled sky. The following are a few of the unique, character-filled places you’ll find around Kendall County!
Bergheim (10 min.) An unincorporated town whose German name means “Mountain Home”. Bergheim is the home of, O’Brien’s restaurant, The RoundUp Outdoor Music Venue, and Guadalupe River State Park.
Comfort
(15 min.) is famously unincorporated, and that’s exactly how the locals like it! A large number of fabulous antique dealers, whimsical retail stores, wineries, a distillery, arts and crafts, pottery stores, jewelry stores, and eclectic eateries make up the historic downtown district, where nearly every building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Comfort offers may annual events, and they have a thriving retail scene. Sisterdale (15 min.)
A once-thriving center of German abolitionism and Unionism, it became a quiet hamlet after the Civil War. Today, it features Sister Creek Vineyards, Saint Tryphon Farm and Vineyards, Sisterdale Saloon, and a handful of wonderful artisan shops. Also, don’t miss out on Blackboard BBQ! VisitBoerne.org | 59
