BOERNE Hill Country Mile Nestled in the lush, scenic backdrop of the majestic Texas Hill Country, Boerne is a small German-heritage town that has retained much of its Old World Charm despite its close proximity to San Antonio. *HUPDQ LPPLJUDQWV ÀUVW VHWWOHG WKLV ODQG along the Cibolo Creek over 150 years ago, and its European beginnings are still evident in the old stone buildings with narrow windows, steep gables, outside stairways and gardens. Additionally, Boerne has a number of art galleries whose artists create in a variety of mixed media. On the Second Saturday of each month, several galleries participate in the “Second Saturday Art & Wineâ€? event. South of the Cibolo offers more great places to shop, eat and relax. It is also home to some of the city’s most stunning historic architecture including St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Phillip Manor, and Carstanjen House (Augusta & Co.). HISTORY Hill Country Mile Boerne was settled in 1849 by a group of German immigrants who brought with them their own language, customs and music, much of which is still alive over 150 \HDUV ODWHU 7KH VHWWOHUV Ă€UVW FDOOHG WKHLU WRZQ Tusculum. In 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the town’s site and changed the name to “Boerneâ€? in honor of Karl Ludwig Borne, a German author and publicist who inspired many young Germans to leave their homeland and travel to the new world. Ironically, Mr. Borne never visited the town that was named after him. Today, a statue of him graces the entrance to the Boerne Visitor Center. Soon, the town would boast a gristmill, SRVW RIĂ€FH EODFNVPLWK VKRS OLYHU\ VWDEOH butcher shop, saloon, general store and a private school. The town was chosen as the county seat in 1859, and in 1870 the limestone courthouse was built and today remains the second oldest courthouse in Texas in continuous use. There are more than 140 other historical buildings around town, and recently some of Boerne’s treasured jewels have been painstakingly restored to their architectural pasts including the Joseph Dienger Building (1890), which today serves as the home of the newly opened Dienger Trading Co. and Philip Manor Square (1866), which began as a private residence and later became the home of the early Boerne shooting 8 | VisitBoerne.org
club, as well as a hotel and polo club and has now been gorgeously restored to The Legendary Texas Polo Club at Philip Manor Square and Captain Turquard’s Saloon. In IDFW OHJHQG KDV LW WKDW WKH Ă€UVW SROR PDWFK in the United States was played just outside of Boerne. Additionally, the Carstanjen-Hall Mansion (1876), which was a private home as well as a variety of restaurants over the years, was recently purchased and completely restored back to its original glory. A walking map of Boerne’s historic buildings was detailed by the Boerne Area Historical Preservation Society and is available at VisitBoerne.org or at the Boerne Visitors Center (1407 S. Main). Aside from the architecture, perhaps Boerne’s most treasured history is a rare, illustrated folio-edition 1614 Low German Bible. One of only six known bibles of Martin Luther’s High German translation, this treasure is on display at the Patrick Heath Public Library. Boerne’s rich and storied past and its resident’s commitment to keeping the heritage alive for future generations have made the city a popular place for both tourists and residents. PURESÓL SPA & SALT CAVE Many spas offer similar services, with slight variations in dÊcor, services offered, and localized treatment options. And then there’s Puresól Spa—the only spa in Texas with an authentic, therapeutic salt cave where guests enter through the cave’s door, relax on a spa lounger while surrounded by soothing music, and emerge not only more relaxed and tension-free, but healthier. Puresól Salt Cave has its roots in Poland, home to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, where 1 million international visitors annually seek treatment in the mine’s rehabilitation rooms for treatment of respiratory, cardiovascular and stress-related illnesses. The climate is rich in negative ions, minerals and microelementary particles that are naturally absorbed into the lungs as you breathe in the ion-drenched air. Puresol Spa’s owner, Beata Huzarska, grew up as the daughter of the leading professor at the prestigious AGH University of Mining and Metallurgy in Poland. In addition, Beata’s father was an expert FRQVXOWDQW LQ WKH ÀHOG RI PLQH GHVLJQLQJ and development. He began to notice that workers in the nearby salt mines did not suffer from the same ailments over time as those who worked in the coal mines,

and he would begin to take an intense interest in health-- making “wellnessâ€? his life’s mission. His GDXJKWHU ZRXOG EH LQĂ XHQFHG WR continue her father’s quest for wellness. After moving to the United States more than two decades ago, Beata began her career as an aesthetician in Florida and RSHQHG KHU Ă€UVW VSD LQ WKH FLW\ RI %RFD Raton before calling Boerne home. The dream of an American-based salt cave was realized with the 2013 opening of PuresĂłl Spa, whose salt cave was constructed using more than 20 tons of salt harvested directly from the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Located on the grounds of luxurious Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort, Puresol is also a full service spa for both men and women that offers specialized massage, body treatments, anti-aging facials, Microdermabrasion, waxing and custom packages. PuresĂłl Spa also offers its own imported line RI HFR FHUWLĂ€HG RUJDQLF VNLQ FDUH SURGXFWV whose pure ingredients are sourced from Europe. The same salt extracted in the mine, is the pillar of their salt scrubs, lotions, body butters and bath milks and all product fragrances are based purely on essential oils. ROAD TRIPS FROM BOERNE
We know you love Boerne, but with long Texas days and gorgeous weather, we encourage you to visit some of our Texas Hill Country neighbors when you are out for an afternoon drive: Camp Verde (45 minutes from Boerne) Historic Camp Verde was the 1854 site of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis’ “Texas Camel Experiment. The camel was chosen for its ability to withstand Texas heat and arid conditions. Robert E. Lee
was said to have laid out the grounds IRU &DPS 9HUGH LQFOXGLQJ WKH RIÀFHU¡V quarters and the camel pens. While the camels were well-suited to the region, their unpleasant disposition eventually JRW WKHP ÀUHG :KHQ WKH &LYLO :DU broke out, the camel experiment was abandoned. Even then, the Camp Verde General Store was open to offer goods and services to soldiers stationed at Fort Verde, and it has continued in RSHUDWLRQ DV D SRVW RIÀFH FRPPXQLW\ center and other incarnations) ever since. The present-day two-story Southern colonial stone structure was built in 1900, after the original building was swept away LQ D à RRG 6SHFWDFXODU RXWGRRU SDWLR dining, fabulous shopping, and a great place to spend the day. ROAD TRIPS FROM BOERNE Sisterdale (15 minutes from Boerne) The community was one of the centers of German abolitionism and Unionism before DQG GXULQJ WKH &LYLO :DU $IWHU WKH FRQÁLFW it became a quiet Hill Country hamlet. It still remains unincorporated, but several businesses have set up shop there in recent years including Nic Campbell Studio, a Texas artist who has recently opened up a gorgeous art gallery and teaching facility. 'HÀQLWHO\ GRQ·W PLVV WKH 6LVWHUGDOH *HQHUDO Store, where you can do everything from grab a bite to eat to rent a kayak and head to the Guadalupe River. Popular Sister Creek Winery is also a great place to sample some Texas Hill Country wines and take some back home with you, and the Marlowe Candle Company offers the perfect wax blends, scents and wicks to SURGXFH VRPH RI WKH ÀQHVW FDQGOHV LQ the area. Sisterdale Dance Hall is a great
place to book weddings, events and other celebrations, and the Sisterdale Saloon is on hand to help you quench your thirst on a hot, Texas afternoon. Bandera (30 minutes from Boerne) The self-proclaimed “Cowboy Capitol of the World” is a throwback to the days of the Old West. The town was founded by Roman Catholic immigrants from Poland, whose St. Stanislaus Catholic Church remains one of the oldest in the state. Bandera was the starting point of the Great Western Cattle Trail during the second half of the 19th century. Today, the town is known for its abundance of “dude ranches” and saloons, as well as shopping and dining along Main Street. Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar is a famous local honky-tonk, and it is the former home of singer Robert Earl Keen, and brothers Bruce and Charlie Robison.

You will have the small-town camaraderie and clean, open air and congestion-free streets, yet still live close to one of the largest cities in Texas. Come visit us-- and then come back and stay.
