BOERNE Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country, Boerne is a small German-heritage town located just 30 minutes from San Antonio, yet it has managed to retain its Old World Charm. German immigrants ÀUVW VHWWOHG WKLV land along the Cibolo Creek over 150 years ago. Boerne’s beginnings are evident in the old stone buildings with narrow windows, steep gables, outside stairways and gardens. Today, more than 140 historic structures remain. The city’s friendly people show a deep respect for their cultural and ancestral heritage. Visitors and locals stroll down Hauptstrasse (Main Street) and discover a myriad of retail stores along Boerne’s Hill Country Mile (many housed in Historic buildings) that carry antiques, gifts, home décor, accessories, clothing, jewelry, candy, pickles, Christmas ornaments year-round,
Texas products, Boerne merchandise, and a number of outstanding art galleries.
There are also many eateries that range from casual, outdoor dining to elegant, ÀQH GLQLQJ <RX ZLOO DOVR ÀQG D JRXUPHW cupcake shop, candy store, bakeries, snowcones, and frozen yogurt along the way. One of Boerne’s newest additions is the Dienger Trading Company—a boutique, bakery, bookstore, bistro and Espresso Bar housed in the Historic Dienger Building whose storied past includes uses as a restaurant, the City of Boerne’s former library, and a general store. Legend has it, a few otherworldly Spirits still hang around. Additionally, Boerne offers an array of lodging from a world-class resort, brand-name hotel chains, quaint bed and breakfasts, historic hotels and unique destination lodging including one, Home Away from Home Ranch,

HISTORY OF BOERNE Boerne was settled in 1849 by German immigrants who brought with them their own language, customs and music, much of which is still alive over 150 years later. 7KH LPPLJUDQWV ÀUVW FDOOHG WKHLU VHWWOHPHQW Tusculum. In 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the town’s site and changed the name to Boerne in honor of Karl Ludwig BÜrne, a German author and publicist who inspired many young Germans to leave their homeland and travel to the new world. Soon, the town would boast a gristmill, post RIÀFH EODFNVPLWK VKRS livery stable, butcher shop, saloon, general store and a private school. The town was chosen as the county seat in 1859, and in 1870 the original limestone courthouse was built—presently the second oldest courthouse in continuous use in Texas.
When the San Antonio and Aransas Pass railroad began making daily treks to Boerne from San Antonio in 1887, the stagecoach was replaced. The railroad also brought mail and newspapers from San Antonio and cut the travel time between the two cities to three hours. At that point, tourism expanded and Boerne grew. There are many historical buildings throughout town, including the famous Robert E. Lee House (525 S. Main) where General Lee stayed while passing through to Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. Today, Boerne remains a popular place for tourists, and it is home to more than 12,000 residents. For more information about Boerne’s history, or to download a walking map of historical buildings, go to VisitBoerne.org or stop by the Boerne Visitors Center (1407 S. Main).

Boerne’s robust environment encouraged the health resort industry, and many people suffering from lung ailments traveled to town to recuperate. In addition, Beata’s father was an expert consultant in WKH ÀHOG RI PLQH designing and development. CAVE WITHOUT A NAME Cave Without A Name is often called “one of the most beautiful caves in Texasâ€? because of the breathtaking world full of natural formations that await visitors as they reach the interior of the cavern. It is the least commercialized cave open to the public in Texas and it is a well-preserved, natural area that draws
serious cavers, geologists, paleontologists, and cave enthusiasts who volunteer time and effort to continue working on the preservation of the cave. The Cave got its unique moniker from a local newspaper contest held in 1940 to name the cave. After touring the cave, a local student said, “the cave is too pretty to have a name,â€? and he won the contest. Tours run an hour; ½ mile round trip. THE ARTS Cibolo Trail
Art al Fresco It’s an exciting time for public art in Boerne! In recent years, Boerne has added several pieces to its sculpture collection with the installation of the Wild Bill Hickok bronze at Main Plaza, The Land of the Cheyenne on the Heart of Boerne Trail, and Father Gander in River Road Park. These installations have been made possible through public/private partnerships with the City of Boerne, the community and private donors. The City is poised to take the next important step to grow its public art collection. In fall 2015, it will launch Art al Fresco, an annual outdoor public art sculpture competition. Artists from across the region will be invited to participate in this 52 | VisitBoerne.org
unique opportunity to show their sculpture in Boerne. Up to 10 pieces will be selected from the submissions and placed throughout central Boerne where visitors and locals will enjoy a walking tour of the sculptures. While the exhibit is in place, visitors and citizens will be able to vote for their favorite piece of art. We encourage you to join us in September to be part of this new journey into the arts – and of course visit your favorite shops and eateries while you’re here! We know you’ll want to make Art al Fresco an annual tradition. For more information and updates, join us on Facebook. facebook.com/ BoerneArtalFresco.

Family Circle Magazine named us as one of the “Ten Best Towns for Familiesâ€? in August 2014. Reasons for our selection include our affordable housing options, strong sense of community, and exemplary school systems. Other reasons cited include our “friendly atmosphereâ€? and “random acts of kindnessâ€? that were witnessed by the visiting writer. Additionally, a highly walk-able downtown, multiple hike and bike trails and a thriving art and cultural scene have helped brand Boerne as a very desirable community for relocation.
