Your Backyard Pool Guide: The Top Questions Answered

S

Summer in Texas has a way of making us dream a little bigger. Maybe it's the long sunny afternoons, backyard barbecues, or the thought of having your own private oasis just steps from the back door. A swimming pool isn't just a place to cool off—it's where memories are made, from family gatherings and birthday parties to quiet evenings spent floating under the stars. If you've ever found yourself scrolling through pool photos and imagining what one could look like in your backyard, you're not alone. Before taking the plunge, most homeowners have a handful of questions about cost, design, timelines, and maintenance. We asked the experts at Gary Pools to answer the five questions they hear most often from people considering a new pool.

10

BOERNE BUSINESS MONTHLY | Volume 19, Issue 1

Top 5 Questions When Considering Building a Pool: 1. How much does it cost? At Gary Pools we cater to all budgets big and small with custom pools starting at $60,000, which would be $465 a month, custom pool/spa combos starting at $90,000. 2. How long does it take to build a pool? Average build time is 90 days. Gary Pools will also assist with HOA documentation as well as attain city permits. 3.What pool design is right for my backyard? The right design depends on four things: your yard size and shape, how you plan to use the pool, your budget and your home’s style. Start with how you will use the pool: FOR FAMILY FUN: • Rectangle or freeform pool • Shallow play area • Wide entry steps • Baja shelf (sun shelf) for kids and lounging FOR EXERCISE • Long rectangular pool • Lap lane (typically 30-40+ feet) • Minimal curves to maximize swimming distance FOR ENTERTAINING • Large tanning ledge • Integrated spa • Swim-up seating or conversation area • Outdoor kitchen and patio space nearby FOR RELAXATION • Smaller pool with spa • Water features such as waterfalls or scuppers • Privacy landscaping Match the design to your backyard shape NARROW BACKYARD • Rectangular or geometric pool • Clean lines to maximize swimming space IRREGULAR BACKYARD • Freeform pool can fit around existing trees, patios and slopes SMALLER BACKYARD • Cocktail pool (small plunge-style pool) • Compact geometric design • Combination pool/spa Consider your home’s architecture A pool usually looks best when it complements the house • Modern homes→ geometric rectangles, dark finishes and clean edges • Mediterranean homes→ curved or freeform designs with stone accents • Traditional homes→ classic rectangular pools with symmetrical landscaping • Hill country or ranch-style homes (common in Texas)→ natural stone coping, freeform shapes, tanning ledges and integrated outdoor living spaces continued on page 12 boernebusinessmonthly.com

THINK ABOUT SUN AND SHADE Before choosing a design pay attention to: • Where the sun hits during the afternoon • Existing trees that create shade • Wind direction • Views you want to highlight or block For example, a tanning shelf works best where it gets several hours of light. POPULAR POOL STYLES RIGHT NOW • Modern Geometric Pool → clean lines and low maintenance • Freeform Pool → organic shape that blends with landscaping • Cocktail Pool → ideal for smaller yards • Infinity Pool → best for properties with views • L- Shaped Pool → combines recreation and lap swimming Sometimes a simple rectangle with quality decking and landscaping looks more luxurious than a highly complex design.

4. HOW MUCH MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED? Approximately 5 minutes a week! At Gary Pools we specifically design and build your custom pool to be extremely low maintenance. This is achieved by incorporating the latest technology in pool equipment and swimming pool filtration. Our goal is minimum day to day maintenance, the best approach is to automate the tasks that normally require frequent attention: sanitizing, cleaning, circulation and water chemistry. Salt Chlorination (Highest Impact) Install a Hayward AquaRite S3 or similar AquaRite salt system Why it reduces maintenance • Produces chlorine automatically from salt • Eliminates most manual chlorine additions • Provides more consistent sanitizer levels • Reduces weekly chemical adjustments Variable-Speed Pump Use a Hayward TriStar VS 950 or Hayward Super Pump VS • Can run longer at lower speeds, improving filtration • Much lower energy costs • Quieter operation • Better circulation for salt systems and cleaners A properly programmed variable-speed pump often becomes a “set it and forget it” component. Large Cartridge Filter (Avoid Backwashing) For lowest maintenance, choose a large cartridge filter such as Hayward SwimClear. Compared with sand filters: • No backwashing • Better filtration • Less wastewater • Cleaning may only be needed once or twice per year in many residential pools. For maintenance reduction, bigger is better. Many pool professionals recommend the largest cartridge filter that fits the equipment pad and budget. Electric Cordless Robotic Cleaner Benefits • Scrubs walls and floors • Reduces manual vacuuming • Removes debris before it reaches the filter • Lowers filter cleaning frequency Many pool owners find a robot saves more maintenance time than any other single upgrade. Automation System Add a Hayward OmniPL or Hayward OmniLogic. Automation allows: • Pump scheduling • Salt-system control • Heater control • Lighting control • Remote monitoring from a phone

5. WILL A POOL ADD VALUE TO MY HOME? A pool is more likely to increase the home value if: • You live in a warm climate where pools are used much more of the year (such as much of Texas). • Many nearby homes already have pools, so buyers expect one. • The pool is professionally designed and well maintained. • The pool fits the size and value of the home and lot. • Outdoor living spaces (patio, kitchen, landscaping) complement the pool. Typical Return on Investment Nationally, homeowners recover somewhere around 50%-70% of the pools construction cost in added home value, though local markets vary. BONUS QUESTION: WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WHEN PLANNING A POOL? Building a pool that’s too large. • Bigger pools cost more to build, heat, clean and maintain.

• Most families spend the majority of their time in a relatively small pool. Choosing excessive depth • Many owners think they want an 8-foot-deep end but rarely use it. • A deep end can reduce usable standing and play space. Ignoring the sun and shade patterns • A pool in full sun may become uncomfortably hot. • Too much shade can make the water cooler and increase debris. Underestimating deck space • The area around the pool often gets more use than the water itself. • Loungers, tables, umbrellas and walking paths need more room than people expect. Poor equipment placement • Pumps and heaters can create noise. • Equipment should be accessible for maintenance, but not dominate the outdoor living area.

Margaretha Gretchen Schneider 1826 - 1906 by James Hurst

Phillip Zoeller immigrated to Texas in 1847 with twenty other members of the Darmstadt Society of Forty. The society initially planned to settle in Wisconsin. However, the founders, Hermann Spiess and Ferdinand Ludwig Herff, were approached by Adelsverein's vice-president, Count Carl Frederick Christian, who arranged to colonize 200 families on the Fischer-Miller Land Grant territory in Texas. The party arrived in Galveston on board the ship St. Pauli in July 1847. The party then sailed to Indianola, where Adelsverein Commissioner-General John O. Meusebach had arranged for numerous wagons to haul the group and its freight inland. The four-week trek to New Braunfels was filled with beer drinking, singing, and youthful high-spiritedness. Spiess and Meusebach scouted the Llano River area and selected the location to establish the society's first community, Bettina, named after the German artist and social activist Bettina von Arnim. Upon reaching the site, the group unloaded their musical instruments and began singing their favorite songs. These were well-educated professional men who lacked agricultural expertise

and basic survival skills. The community was short-lived; its demise was hastened by its own idea of a community that was not regulated by authority figures. Conflicts arose between individuals over who should shoulder the bulk of the workload. After the Adelsverein ended, its members drifted elsewhere. In 1849, Zoeller, along with seven other Bettina settlers, camped along the Cibolo Creek near present-day Boerne and decided to settle there. An old building, currently located on Johns Road, behind H. W. Schwope & Sons Well Drilling, is thought to be part of the settlement. In May 1850, Wilhelm Friedrich purchased 400 acres there. By September, five of the seven, including Zoeller and Friedrich, were back in New Braunfels, working as laborers on the Darmstater Farm. Adam Vogt, one of the seven, elected to stay in the settlement and purchased the land from Friedrich in January of 1851. Phillip was born on October 31, 1818, in Darmstadt, Hesse, to Helwig and Margarethe Zoeller. He was baptized Johann Phillip Peter Zoeller at the Lutheran Church in Darmstadt eight days later. He was raised and educated, became an architect, and was engaged to Margaretha Schneider before immigrating to Texas with the Forty at age twenty-nine. Margaretha was born in Bensheim, a small village about eighteen miles south of Darmstadt, on October 4, 1826. The 1850s were a decade of transition for Phillip. He became a citizen of the United States on April 13, 1853, and he asked his fiancée to join him in Texas. On October 1, 1853, Margaretha boarded the ship Neptune in Bremerhaven, accompanied by Phillip's fourteen-year-old nephew, Adolph. Phillip met them when they arrived in Galveston two months later, on November 28. The party's trek inland only took a couple of weeks, as Phillip and Margaretha were married in Comal County on December 13. Two years later, on October 1, 1855, they had their first of eleven children and named him Helwig after Phillips's father. On December 27, 1855, Wilhelm Friedrich surveyed 160 acres of land for Phillip on Spring Creek in Comal County, and he applied The seven men formed a settlement near present-day Boerne

Phillip Zoeller for a land patent. In July 1857, the Zoellers welcomed their second child and first daughter, named Margarethe, after Phillip's mother. Ten months later, the following May, Ferdinand Zoeller was born. Ferdinand had the distinction of being one of the first children born in Blanco County. His father, Phillip, had signed a petition in November 1855 requesting the State to form a new county. They granted the petition, and the new county, Blanco, was created on February 12, 1858, three months before Ferdinand was born. In November, Phillip went to court, presented his tax receipts proving three years of occupancy, and requested title to the land. The court granted the patent on May 3, 1860. Fire destroyed the 1860 Population Census for Blanco County, but the Agricultural census survived and recorded Phillip's 160 acres on Spring Creek. As the Civil War loomed, Texas held a special Secession referendum on February 23, 1861. Blanco County voted to remain in the Union, as did neighboring Gillespie County, where 96% of the voters opposed secession. Two weeks later, on March 9, Ernst Zoeller was born. Ernst was the first of three children born in the Confederate States of America. Texas Zoeller Spring Creek Property

formed Kendall County on January 10, 1862, and on May 30, Kendall County was placed under martial law by the Confederacy due to its Unionist sympathies. In August, Phillip's nephew, Adolph, left for Mexico with a group of sixty-one Unionists, intending to go to New Orleans and join the Union Army. They were ambushed on the Nueces River by Confederate forces, and Adolph was one of eleven men to escape the massacre and make it to Mexico. In this environment, Heinrich Zoeller was born on December 11, 1862, the first child in the family born in Kendall County. Friedrich Zoeller was born in October 1864. Phillip and Margaretha had two more children after the war: William, born in April 1868, and Helen, born in December 1869. According to Margaretha Zoeller's response in the 1900 census, she and Phillip had eleven children, eight of whom were still living. Phillip Zoeller was on the 1870 Agricultural Census for Kendall County, showing his farm had grown from 160 to 680 acres. The San Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railroad received a land script for 640 acres in February 1861 for completing ten miles of its rail line. This land was on Spring Creek and was divided into two tracts: a 520-acre tract adjoining Phillip's on the north and east, and a 120-acre tract a few varas to the southwest. On March 19 of that year, Phillip bought the rights to the land script for $220. He kept the tract adjoining his property and, in 1869, sold the 120-acre tract to Herman Wetz. In addition to farming, Phillip was also active in his community. His tax receipts show that he always paid his poll tax and voted. Not only did Phillip sign the petition to create Blanco County, but he also signed the petition to create Kendall County. On August 23, 1863, he became the County Surveyor for Kendall County. The county commissioned him to design and build the first courthouse in 1869 and the first jail in 1876. He served as County Agent, School Trustee, and School Examiner. It was not uncommon for landowners to grant Phillip power of attorney to sell their land

for them, and when his neighbors, Johannes “John” Bickel and his family, were massacred, the court appointed him as executor of the Bickel estate. Phillip died on May 29, 1900, and was buried the following day in the Boerne Cemetery. His oldest son, Helwig, was running the farm, and Phillip's wife, Margarethe, had moved in with their youngest daughter, Helene Adam. Margarethe died six years after Phillip, on December 15, 1906, and was buried beside her husband. BBM

Why Trees Are the Most Valuable Investment in Your Landscape

In the Texas Hill Country, trees are more than landscape features—they are part of the region's identity. Majestic live oaks, native cedar elms, bur oaks, and pecans have shaped our landscapes for generations, providing shade, beauty, and a connection to the land that defines life in Central Texas. As homeowners continue to invest in outdoor living spaces, one element remains the foundation of every successful landscape design: trees. While patios, pools, outdoor kitchens, and hardscapes add function and enjoyment, it is often the trees that bring comfort, character, and lasting value to a property.

Nature's Air Conditioning

Anyone who has spent a Texas summer outdoors understands the value of shade. A mature shade tree can reduce temperatures beneath its canopy by several degrees, making outdoor spaces significantly more comfortable during the hottest months of the year. Strategically placed trees help: • Lower cooling costs by shading homes and windows • Reduce heat reflected from patios and driveways • Create more enjoyable outdoor living areas • Extend the amount of time families can comfortably spend outdoors In a region where summer temperatures frequently exceed 100 degrees, trees are among the most effective tools for creating a livable landscape.

Protecting Property Value

Few landscape investments provide the long-term return of healthy, mature trees. Across Texas, homes with established trees consistently attract buyers and often command higher property values.

18

A mature oak-lined driveway or thoughtfully preserved native trees can: • Enhance curb appeal • Create a sense of permanence and luxury • Improve privacy • Distinguish a property from neighboring homes For rural properties and acreage homesites, mature native trees are often considered one of the land's most valuable natural assets.

Supporting the Hill Country Ecosystem

Native trees play a vital role in preserving the natural beauty and environmental health of the Texas Hill Country. Their root systems help stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and improve water infiltration during heavy rain events. Trees also provide critical habitat for: • Songbirds • Pollinators • Deer and native wildlife • Beneficial insects By incorporating native species into landscape designs, homeowners contribute to the long-term health of the region's ecosystem while reducing maintenance and water requirements.

Drought-Tolerant Beauty

Water conservation has become an increasingly important consideration for Texas homeowners. Fortunately, many native tree species are well adapted to the challenging conditions of Central Texas. Popular choices include: • Live Oak • Bur Oak • Cedar Elm • Texas Red Oak • Monterrey Oak • Mexican Sycamore • Texas Persimmon These trees offer exceptional beauty while requiring less supplemental irrigation than many non-native varieties once established.

Ready-Made Gifts for Pets and Pet Parents The Foundation of Outdoor Living

Outdoor living continues to be one of the strongest trends in residential design, especially throughout the Hill Country. Covered patios, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and resort-style backyards have become highly desirable amenities. Yet even the most beautifully designed outdoor space can struggle without natural shade and landscape structure. Trees help define outdoor "rooms" by: • Creating natural gathering spaces • Providing privacy and screening • Softening hardscape elements • Framing views of the surrounding landscape A mature tree canopy often becomes the centerpiece around which the rest of the outdoor environment is designed.

The Perfect Pet Gift Baskets

Preserving What Makes the Hill Country Special

One of the most important decisions homeowners can make when building or renovating is preserving existing mature trees whenever possible. Many of the region's iconic live oaks are decades— or even centuries—old. Once removed, they cannot be replaced within a homeowner's lifetime. Protecting mature trees during construction not only preserves property value but also maintains the character and natural beauty that make the Hill Country such a desirable place to live.

Planting for Future Generations

The best time to plant a tree is often years before its benefits are needed. Every tree planted today becomes an investment in the future—a legacy that will provide shade, beauty, wildlife habitat, and environmental benefits for decades to come. Whether enhancing a suburban backyard in Boerne, improving a ranch property near Fredericksburg, or creating a new homesite in the Hill Country, trees remain one of the smartest and most impactful additions to any landscape. In Texas, outdoor living begins with the land itself. And no element contributes more to the beauty, comfort, and value of that land than a healthy, thriving tree. BBM

There are four potential options for your 401(k) when leaving an employer: • Leave it in your former employer’s 401(k) plan, if allowed by the plan. • Move it to your new employer’s 401(k) plan, if you’ve changed employers and your new employer plan allows for it. • Roll the account over to an individual retirement account (IRA). • Cash it out, which is subject to potential tax consequences.

We can talk through your financial goals and find the option that works best for you.

Boerne ISD Continues Investment in Employees with Approval of 2026-2027 Compensation Plan

W

MULTI-YEAR COMMITMENT TO STAFF DELIVERS COMPETITIVE SALARIES, EXPANDED BENEFITS, AND STRONGER SUPPORT FOR EMPLOYEES

When the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees approved the district's 20262027 Compensation Plan on June 15, it marked more than another annual pay increase. It marked the continuation of a promise. Over the past two years, Boerne ISD has made a deliberate commitment to invest in the people who serve students every day. From increasing teacher salaries and hourly wages to expanding healthcare contributions, adding employee stipends, and creating new opportunities for families, district leaders have worked to ensure employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to build long-term careers in Boerne ISD. The newly approved compensation plan continues that commitment. "Attracting and retaining exceptional employees will always be one of our highest priorities," Superintendent Dr. Kristin Craft said. "Every success we celebrate as a district begins with the people who serve our students. This plan reflects our belief that investing in our staff is one of the most important investments we can make." Experience Matters The 2026-2027 Compensation Plan provides meaningful salary increases across all employee groups, with additional recognition for experience among instructional staff. Teachers, nurses, librarians, and instructional coaches in Steps 5 through 40 will receive salary increases of 3.4 percent or more over the prior year. Employees in Steps 1 through 4 will receive a 2 percent increase over the prior year. All other employee groups will also receive a 2 percent pay increase over the prior year. The district’s long-term commitment to compensation is reflected in teacher salary growth over the past decade. Since 2017-2018, teacher salaries have increased significantly across every experience level, with total gains ranging from more than $14,000 to $15,650. For many employees, those gains represent a combination of state funding and local investments made by Boerne ISD to remain competitive in recruiting and retaining high-quality staff. For additional information about the 2026-2027 Compensation Plan, click here. Supporting Families Beyond the Paycheck This year, the district is also expanding a benefit that directly impacts employees and their families.

BOERNE BUSINESS MONTHLY | Volume 19, Issue 1

Last year, House Bill 2 eliminated Pre-K tuition for the children of classroom teachers. Beginning in 2026-2027, Boerne ISD will extend that benefit to all full-time employees. Eligible employees may enroll qualifying children in Boerne ISD Pre-K at no cost, pending available space, creating a savings of $675 per month. “Supporting employees means looking beyond salary schedules,” Craft said. “We know our employees are also parents, caregivers, and community members. Expanding access to Pre-K is another way we can support families while helping employees thrive both professionally and personally.” Building Momentum Through Strategic Investments The 2026-2027 compensation plan is part of a larger strategy that has guided district decisions since 2024. Since 2024, Boerne ISD has invested millions of dollars in employee compensation, benefits, healthcare support, stipends, and staffing initiatives. These investments have included increased pay for transportation staff, new stipends for highly specialized positions, retention incentives, hourly wage increases, expanded healthcare contributions, and additional support positions on campuses. In 2025, the district increased starting teacher pay to $60,000, raised hourly pay scales for paraprofessionals and auxiliary staff, funded hundreds of additional employee stipends, and increased healthcare contributions for employees. More than 98 percent of funds designated for employee compensation enhancements were directed to staff members who directly impact students. These investments have contributed to stronger recruitment, improved retention, reduced vacancies, greater operational efficiency, and continued academic success for students. Investing in People. Investing in Students. Board President Courtney Darter-Bruce said the compensation plan reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to both employees and students. “Our employees make Boerne ISD special,” Darter-Bruce said. “Every day, they invest their talents, energy, and hearts into serving students. The Board is proud to continue investing in the people who make our schools exceptional.”

As Boerne ISD prepares for the 20262027 school year, district leaders say the focus remains unchanged: supporting employees, strengthening schools, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. “Together, we are building something special,” Craft said. “When we invest in our people, we invest in our students, our schools, and the future of Boerne ISD.”

Boerne ISD Named Texas Way District of Distinction for Excellence in Sportsmanship and Community Involvement

I

In Boerne ISD, the scoreboard is never the only measure of success. Across gymnasiums, fields, tracks, courts and competition spaces, students are learning lessons that extend far beyond athletics. They are learning how to compete with character, respect opponents, encourage teammates, represent their schools with pride and lead in a way that strengthens the entire community. That commitment has earned Boerne ISD statewide recognition as a 2025-2026 Texas Way District of Distinction. The honor is awarded through The Texas Way, an initiative created in partnership with the Texas High School Coaches Association, the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association, the University Interscholastic League and 2Words Character Development. The program was established to promote a higher standard of sportsmanship at high school and junior high athletic events across Texas. Boerne ISD received the distinction for excellence in sportsmanship and community involvement, recognizing the district’s intentional work to create a positive culture in athletics and student activities. “This recognition is a celebration of our students, coaches, families and community,” said Dr. Kristin Craft, Superintendent. “In Boerne ISD, we believe how you compete matters. We want our students to strive for excellence, but we also want them to understand the importance of integrity, respect, humility and leadership. Those lessons will stay with them long after the game is over.” The Texas Way initiative continues to grow across the state as districts work together to improve the culture surrounding school athletics. According to the organization, the program has contributed to positive momentum across Texas, including reductions in player and coach ejections in many sports and an increased focus

on sportsmanship as a shared responsibility among students, coaches, parents and communities. For Boerne ISD, the recognition reflects the daily work happening throughout the district. Coaches and sponsors are not only developing athletes and competitors; they are helping shape young people who understand the value of teamwork, self-discipline, accountability and service. Whether students are shaking hands after a hard-fought game, cheering for a teammate, showing respect to officials or representing their school in the community, Boerne ISD’s commitment to character is visible in moments big and small. “This award affirms the culture we are building together,” said Stan Leech, Boerne ISD Athletic Director. “Our coaches work hard to teach students that sportsmanship is not something extra. It is part of who we are. We are proud of our students for the way they represent Boerne ISD and grateful for the families and community members who support that standard.” As part of the recognition, Boerne ISD will receive an official District of Distinction banner and certificate celebrating the district’s commitment to excellence in sportsmanship and community involvement. Celebrating 30 Years in Engineering & Environmental Consulting

W

HOW WESTWARD BUILT A LEGACY THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS, INNOVATION, AND COMMUNITY photos by The Marvelous Mrs. Lindsey

When WESTWARD opened its doors in Boerne in 1996, co-founders Tommy Mathews and Gary Nicholls had a simple vision: build a company that solved problems, treated people right, and never shied away from a challenge. Thirty years later, that philosophy — often summed up by a simple "Yes, we can do that" attitude — has helped transform WESTWARD from a small engineering and aggregates consulting firm into one of the region's most respected engineering, geology, and environmental consulting companies. Today, the firm employs more than 50 professionals and serves clients across more than 31 states and internationally, all while continuing to call Boerne home. For Mathews and Nicholls, however, success has never been measured solely by growth. It's been measured by

the relationships they've built — with clients, employees, industry partners, and the communities they serve. "Our business has always been about people first," said Tommy Mathews, PG, President and CEO. "The trust our clients place in us and the dedication of our employees are what made these last 30 years possible. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and even more excited by what the next 30 years will bring." That people-first mindset has been woven into WESTWARD's culture from the very beginning. Rather than limiting themselves to what they had done before, the team embraced every opportunity as a chance to learn, expand, and find solutions. That willingness to say "yes" has become one of the

company's defining characteristics. As new challenges emerged, so did new capabilities. What began as a niche consulting practice has steadily grown into a multidisciplinary firm offering environmental compliance, civil and industrial engineering, geological assessments, surveying, permitting, natural resource consulting, ecology, and health and safety services. Each new service was added because clients trusted WESTWARD to help them solve another problem — and the company was determined to deliver. That mindset has fueled three decades of steady, intentional growth. Today, WESTWARD's team works with industrial, municipal, commercial, nonprofit, and environmental organizations throughout Texas and across the country. Their projects have reached across 31 states and three countries! As the business has grown, so has its investment in people. Many members of the WESTWARD team joined the company immediately after college and have spent their entire careers growing alongside the business. "Some of our best people joined us straight out of college and seeing them grow into the leaders they are today is what 30 years really means to me. I am incredibly proud of how they have developed, taken on new challenges, and shaped the culture of this company. Our success is a direct reflection of our dedicated employees,” said Gary Nicholls, PE, Executive Vice President and COO. That commitment to developing people has created a culture where experience is shared, mentorship is encouraged, and long-term careers are built. The relationships WESTWARD has cultivated extend well beyond its own offices. From their headquarters in Boerne and expanded presence in North Texas, WESTWARD serves industrial, municipal, commercial, non-profit, and environmental organizations across four core disciplines: Environmental Compliance in air quality, water resource management, and stormwater pollution prevention; Civil & Industrial Engineering providing full lifecycle services from site evaluation and design through permitting and construction. continued on page 26

The engineering team designs water, wastewater, and public water supply systems, including Edwards Aquifer protection programs; Geological Investigations from drilling to geophysics, subsurface characterization, 3D modeling, and reserve calculations; and Natural Resources that comprise wetland delineations, jurisdictional water determinations, habitat assessments, and endangered species compliance. “When it comes to our clients, we have always believed in putting them first. We do what is best for the customer and good for us,” said Mathews. “We have worked with so many of our clients for years, in fact, our first two clients are still with us 30 years later. We believe it is our job to remember everything about our customers’ businesses so we can be a clearing house of information and stability for them. They trust us to be their source of the ever-changing rules and regulations of their industry and our team is always working to be a resource.” Over the years, WESTWARD has actively helped to shape industry regulations by working with federal agencies and national industry groups such as the National Asphalt Pavement Association, the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. At the state level, the firm has worked closely with the Edwards Aquifer Authority, the Texas Aggregates and Concrete Association (TACA), the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association (TXAPA), the Texas Association of General Contractors (TAGC), and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). This experience gives the firm a valuable perspective that benefits both clients and regulators. By helping shape industry standards and regulatory practices, WESTWARD brings valuable insight to every project, allowing clients to navigate complex environmental and engineering challenges with confidence. Although much of WESTWARD's work happens behind the scenes, its leadership believes strong businesses have a responsibility to invest in their communities. Through support of local organizations and ongoing community involvement, the company continues to strengthen the place it has proudly called home for

More than just consultants – WESTWARD is a team of passionate experts in engineering, geology, ecology, and environmental services dedicated to solving real-world challenges. Their strength lies in the diversity of skills and experience across various industries, allowing them to tackle complex projects in engineering, resource exploration, environmental services, and permitting. three decades. “We are big proponents that businesses should provide internships to talented local high school and college kids. We love providing those opportunities and do what we can to keep those hardworking kids here in our local workforce,” Mathews added. For a company whose work is rooted in planning for the future, reaching a 30-year milestone is both a celebration and a reminder of what matters most. It's not simply the number of projects completed or the number of states served. It's the clients who continue to return year after year because they know they'll receive honest advice and practical solutions. It's the employees who have built careers together and helped shape the company's culture. It's the partnerships formed over decades of collaboration. And it's the belief that every challenge presents another opportunity to say, "Yes, we can do that." BBM

Clean Eating

A

As you walk through the grocery store, countless products promising better health vie for your attention. Labels boast "natural," "heart healthy," "zero sugar," and dozens of other claims. Despite having more food choices than ever before, we are struggling with low energy, weight gain, chronic inflammation, and other preventable health conditions. Perhaps the answer is not found in the latest nutrition trend or label claim. Perhaps it is found in something much simpler: eating real food. At Annie's Apothecary, we talk with patients and customers every day about wellness. And while every person's health journey is unique, one common theme continues to emerge. People feel better when they eat foods that are closer to how nature intended them to be. This concept is often referred to as "clean eating," but the principle is straightforward: Choose foods that are minimally processed, rich in nutrients, and free from unnecessary additives whenever possible. Focus on fruits, vegetables, quality proteins, healthy fats, whole grains, herbs, and spices. Limit foods that require a chemistry degree to understand the ingredient label. This is not a novel idea; it is actually how most people commonly ate before highly processed convenience foods became the norm. One of the challenges facing us today is the sheer number of additives found in modern food products. Preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, stabilizers, texturizers, and sweeteners can be found in everything from snack foods to sports drinks to even electrolyte powders. While many of these ingredients have been approved for use and deemed safe by regulatory standards, consumers are increasingly asking an important question: If these ingredients are not nutritionally necessary, why should I consume them? More people are beginning to seek products with shorter ingredient lists and ingredients they can actually recognize. It is less about fear and more about intentionality. When given the choice between a product containing a handful of recognizable ingredients and another containing dozens of lab-created additives, many consumers are choosing simplicity. Organizations such as the World Health Organization have encouraged consumers to also consider their sugar intake and look beyond simply replacing sugar with non-sugar sweeteners and instead focus on reducing the overall desire for excessive sweetness in the diet. The goal is not merely finding a substitute—it is developing healthier eating patterns altogether. What we often find is that when people begin eating more whole foods, their taste preferences naturally change. Foods that once seemed bland become flavorful. Fresh fruit becomes satisfyingly sweet. Herbs and spices become exciting ways to enhance meals rather than relying on sugar, artificial flavorings, or heavily processed ingredients. This is one reason we are passionate about helping our customers find cleaner alternatives. Among the products we proudly carry are those from a Mineral-rich salt, seasoning, and electrolyte company known for emphasizing simple, quality ingredients. Their products have developed a loyal following among consumers looking for less-processed seasoning options. We carry a variety of seasonings and spice blends that allow families to add flavor to meals without relying on many of the artificial ingredients commonly found in conventional seasoning products.

A Simple Path Toward Better Health by Dr. Scott Sumners, PharmD

We also offer cleaner electrolyte products, which have become increasingly popular among active individuals, families, and those simply looking to stay hydrated. Unlike many mainstream hydration products that contain artificial dyes, excessive sweeteners, or unnecessary fillers, high quality hydration products should focus on providing essential electrolytes with a cleaner ingredient profile. There is a growing wellness philosophy we believe is gaining momentum across our community and beyond: wellness begins with informed choices. The good news is that clean eating does not require a complete lifestyle overhaul. It doesn't mean never enjoying dessert, never eating out, or spending hours preparing elaborate meals. In fact, some of the healthiest changes are often the simplest. Start by reading ingredient labels. Cook at home one or two additional nights each week. Choose to drink water more often. Add another serving of vegetables to your day. Select products with fewer artificial ingredients when alternatives are available. Small decisions, repeated consistently, can have a remarkable impact over time. As a community, we are fortunate to live in an area that values health, family, and personal responsibility. More people are asking thoughtful questions about what they put into their bodies, and that curiosity is a positive step toward longterm wellness. At Annie's Apothecary, we believe wellness is not about perfection. It is about making better choices one step at a time. Whether that means choosing cleaner foods, paying closer attention to ingredient labels, staying active, managing stress, or simply becoming more informed, every positive choice matters. Health is built through daily habits, not onetime dramatic transformations that tend to lose steam with time. And sometimes the most powerful change we can make is returning to the basics: real food, simple ingredients, and a commitment to taking care of ourselves and our families. In a world that often overcomplicates health, clean eating is a simple way to work toward well-being. BBM

The GVTC Foundation Surpasses $7.5 Million in Community Giving During 20th Anniversary Celebration

The GVTC Foundation celebrated two decades of community impact during its Spring Award Breakfast held Thursday, May 28, at the Knibbe Auditorium, recognizing 92 nonprofit organizations and awarding nearly $350,000 through its Spring 2026 grant and sponsorship program. The event marked a significant milestone for the Foundation, which has now invested over $7,500,000 in local communities since its founding in 2006. Representatives from nonprofit organizations across the Foundation’s 11-county service area gathered to celebrate the Spring Awards and explore opportunities for collaboration, partnership, and resource-sharing aimed at strengthening community impact. The GVTC Foundation continues to focus its support on organizations addressing critical community needs through health and human services, education, youth programs, volunteer emergency services, and cultural initiatives. “This milestone reflects what can happen when a community comes together around a shared commitment to helping others,” said Sonia Aguillon, President of The GVTC Foundation. “GVTC is committed to being local and working to enhance our community. The generosity of our donors and volunteers, combined with GVTC’s matching commitment, allows The GVTC Foundation to create a lasting impact in the communities we proudly call home. We are grateful for every nonprofit partner working tirelessly to bridge gaps, provide critical support, and uplift those experiencing hardship.” This year, the Foundation introduced a streamlined funding process, combining grants and sponsorship requests into a single application and moving to two funding cycles each year. The change is designed to simplify the process for nonprofit partners while maximizing the Foundation’s ability to support community needs. The Foundation’s impact is made possible

through a unique partnership among GVTC employees, directors, customers, donors, and community supporters. Today, 87% of GVTC employees and 100% of GVTC’s Board of Directors contribute to the Foundation. GVTC matches employee and director contributions at 150%. Customers also support local giving through the Foundation’s Round Up for Change program, while GVTC matches donations from businesses and individuals dollar-for-dollar. Beyond the funding awarded, the event reinforced the Foundation’s role as a connector and catalyst for community improvement. Nonprofit leaders were encouraged to build relationships, share resources, and identify opportunities to work together to expand their reach and better serve residents across the region. For 20 years, the GVTC Foundation has partnered with organizations working to fill gaps, meet emerging needs, and strengthen the communities GVTC serves. The Spring Awards celebration highlighted both the progress made and the continued commitment to creating meaningful local impact for years to come. BBM
