Sewell Park continued *** In 1917, the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries leased the college four acres of land along the river. College workers, armed with mud scrapers and mules, cleaned the river bottom, built up the banks and smoothed the slopes. It was called Riverside Park until 1946 when it was renamed in honor of Sewell. In 1984, a $1 million renovation gave the park its current look. Sewell is now a favorite student hangout on campus. The six-acre park features grassy banks for soaking up sun or playing Frisbee with friends. Stairs provide easy access for swimming or snorkeling in the San Marcos River. The park also features a basketball court, volleyball courts and picnic and barbecue areas — all along the riverbank. In 2008, presidential candidate Barack Obama made a campaign stop at Sewell Park, addressing a crowd of several thousand.

BOKO
Texas State’s Mascot
The Bobcat has been the mascot of Texas State University since 1921, when the university adopted the name from the recommendation of a committee formed to raise school spirit. Smaller than mountain lions, bobcats are known for their stubborn fierceness and great courage. The football squad used the bobcat for the first time in 1921 and went undefeated with a 7-0 season. Texas State had several officially recognized live bobcat mascots until the 1970s. In 1964 the Texas State Bobcat was given the official name of “Boko” by Beth Greenlees, a sophomore from Luling, Texas, who beat out about 100 other students in a “Name the Bobcat” contest. Boko has twice been named “USA National Champion” mascot.

Bobcat Stadium was built in 1981, and is the home of Bobcat Football. With recent additions including the Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields West Side Complex and the North Side Complex, Bobcat Stadium has elevated to one the best 30,000-seat stadiums in the country. The End Zone Complex was completed and dedicated in 2002. The facility, located in the south end zone of Bobcat Stadium, houses
the athletic program’s football operations. The Football End Zone Complex also has a full service training center, meeting rooms and coaching staff offices. In 2003, the playing field in Bobcat Stadium was named Jim Wacker Field to honor Texas State’s former football coach and director of athletics. Walker coached the Bobcat football team from 1979-82. His 42-8 record in the span is the best four-year mark in
school history. He led the Bobcats to back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships in 1981 and 1982. His 1982 team finished the season 14-0, and he was named College Division Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. He also served as director of athletics at Texas State (then Southwest Texas State) from 1988-01. He passed away on Aug. 26, 2003 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Strutters continued *** For more than half a century, the Strutters have fascinated audiences. They have performed at two U.S. presidential inaugurations, participated in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®, and appeared on every major television network and in five feature films. During summer 2008, the Strutters performed on NBC’s hit prime-time show, “America’s Got Talent.” They have kicked their way through more than 22 countries on four continents and were the first U.S. dance team to perform in the People’s Republic of China.
The Strutters have also delighted crowds at Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs games, as well as car races and rodeos throughout the country. A photograph of the 1962 Strutters, decked out in the team’s original uniforms that featured top hats and cowboy boots, hung on walls across the country when it was included in Mobil Oil’s calendar for that year, and the 1976 Strutters were selected to represent America’s Bicentennial in a national television commercial for Coca Cola. More than 3,000 dancers now call themselves Strutter alumnae.
Witliff continued from page 25 *** Levy arranged the inaugural show, which featured 80 images by artists represented in the photography collection. The very first photograph to be hung on the new walls was Cosmos by Keith Carter. Two to three exhibitions were mounted each year; some were thematically inspired by the significant Mexican photography archive, others were single-artist shows of work in the collection by major photographers, such as Kate Breakey, Keith Carter, Russell Lee, Josephine Sacabo, and Rocky Schenck.

LOCAL LEGENDS Campus is home to icons that are frozen in time
The LBJ Statue was unveiled in September 2006 and stands in the Quad in front of Flowers Hall. The near life-size statue depicts a young Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th president of the United States, as he may have appeared while a student at Texas State, then known as Southwest Texas State Teachers College. Johnson graduated in 1930 with a bachelor of science in history with a permanent teaching certificate. LBJ statue continued on next page

The Bobcat statue, located between the Taylor Murphy Building and the Psychology Building, was installed in October 2008. The bronze statue was commissioned by the Associated Student Government and created by noted sculptor Matthew Palmer of Friday Harbor, Washington. The university adopted the Bobcat as its mascot in 1921. The Bobcat, known for its fierceness and courage, was recommended by a committee formed to raise school spirit.

LBJ statue continued *** Commissioned by the Associated Student Government, the statue is the work of acclaimed sculptor Lawrence Ludtke of Houston. Ludtke was a fellow in the National Sculpture Society and a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of British Sculptors. Texas State remains the only university in Texas to have graduated a U.S. president or vice president. While Johnson’s memory remains alive on campus — the LBJ Student Center is named in his honor, as is the university’s Lyndon Baines Johnson Distinguished Lecture Series — this is the first statue of the former president on campus. After his graduation, Johnson returned to the Texas State campus many times, both as president and in his retirement years. In 1965, he returned to his alma mater to sign the Higher Education Act, which opened the doors of higher education to many who could not previously afford it.
Fighting Stallions The Fighting Stallions are an iconic landmark on the Texas State campus. The area surrounding the 17-foot-high sculpture, located on the west end of the Quad, is the university’s designated free speech area. Students have made it a tradition to rub the stallions for good luck before exams.

2 Iconic OLD
This red-roofed, castle-like landmark was Texas State’s first building — and until 1908, the only campus structure. Designed by architect E. Northcraft, Old Main was built in a style known as Victorian Gothic. The building opened in time for the first classes in fall 1903. As other buildings were added, Old Main served as Texas State’s administration building. Old Main has undergone many renovations. Originally, most of the second floor was a large auditorium/chapel, with an ornately carved and filigreed cathedral ceiling. With a stage at one end and a balcony at the other, this is where general assemblies, plays and presentations were held.

Old Main continued from page 33 The auditorium was subdivided into smaller rooms in the 1972 renovation, and in 1988, a floor was added at the balcony level. However, the remnants of the ornate ceiling are still visible on the third floor. An extensive restoration in 1993-94 returned the famous roof to its original style and color. Old Main now houses the College of Fine Arts and Communication and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
