After already traveling over 2000 miles by car from Dallas to Orlando, Orlando to Jacksonville and then Jax back to Panama City, you would think that Danny Braught and I would have had enough adventure. Especially after having picked up 18 year old pro SUP surfer Chris Rockwood in Orlando from Surf Expo. In fact, there was a large part of me that just wanted to stay in the hotel room on Panama City beach that faithful morning we met up

Still further I descend, pushing the limits of the pressure but unable to notice because, as I stop and look around at all of the natural beauty, I am overcome with a calming ZLUZH[PVU [OH[ ZLLTPUNS` Z[VWWLK [PTL ;OH[ lasted about one second before I realized I needed to get some air. Now, having only experienced this kind of clarity in a swimming pool, I forgot to notice just how far down I had gone. Looking back up at the surface and the kicking feet of my friends, I realized that this was the deepest I had ever been! So kicking with the ferocity of someone being chased by underwater sea monsters, I made my way back to the surface, only to catch my breath and see if I could go deeper! We all took turns with our underwater camera gear, diving down and getting incredible ZOV[Z 0[ ^HZ TVYL KPɉJ\S[ [V WHKKSL IHJR [V the truck than the upstream paddle was to get [OLYL ;OL JSHYP[` VM [OL KLLW IS\LZ HYL Z[PSS imbedded in my mind and it is all due to one person. Gabriel Gray is a known advocate for clean rivers and SUP expeditions/adventures, and I know that we are all thankful to have him as a friend because none of us will ever forget that morning.

After moving to Jupiter, I started writing and photographing as the Lifestyle and Beach It’s funny, but I’ve always been drawn to the ocean, Correspondent for the Jupiter Courier Newsweekly yet it scares the heck out of me and I don’t usually go and I’ve had the opportunity to meet the most in unless I’m on a board. I was born in Canada, raised incredible people and special access to up close and in Connecticut and the minute the door opened after personal events like photographing the Dalai Lama high school I moved to California. I felt at home there blessing the Jupiter Inlet from a water angle. I write immediately and knew being around the sea is where and photograph many of my riders, in addition to many I belonged. Years later I gravitated to south Florida. I others that I feature weekly. I have written lifestyle ÄUK T` WLHJL HUK IHSHUJL OLYL (Z H WOV[VNYHWOLY and event coverage articles for major magazines, and photo journalist, I am involved in all aspects of including SUP Magazine, SUP the Mag, Kiteworld, water sports and have been covering the South Florida ;OL 2P[LIVHYKLY HUK :)* 2P[LIVHYKPUN scene for several years. I started photographing water board sports and everything just fell into place and I I am involved with an amazing group of watermen/ RUL^ 0 MV\UK ^OH[ 0 ^HZ TLHU[ [V KV ;OL WLVWSL HYL women and we created Kiting for Kids. It is an annual so special that inhabit the water world, whether SUP, toy drive which donates toys to children with cancer, heart disease and other life threatening illnesses in our 2P[LZ\YÄUN :\YÄUN >HRL VY :RPT area. Realizing this could be much more than a toy ;OL 1\WP[LY 7HST )LHJO HYLH PZ MHZ[ ILJVTPUN [OL drive, professional athletes Damien Leroy, Alexandra East Coast mecca for water sports, drawing top Menk and James McGrath joined to take this to the athletes from across the globe and I’m so blessed to next level. It is said that family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs, the ones who accept you for who you are, the one’s who would do anything to see you smile HUK ^OV SV]L `V\ UV TH[[LY ^OH[ ;OL :<7 JVTT\UP[` PZ Q\Z[ [OH[ H MHTPS` HUK VUL Z[PSS reeling over the loss of Andres Pombo who lost his life in Hood River on a training run for the Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge. A FEW WORDS FROM ANDRES’ FRIENDS IN THE FLORIDA SUP COMMUNITY: VICTORIA BURGESS So many words come to mind when you hear that name. Fun, silly, sincere, goofy, always smiling, helpful, giving, someone you could always count on. And the list goes on and on. Andres was an overall extremely amazing example for the sport of SUP. He was always there to help and teach those who wanted to learn, from kids to his Special Olympic athletes. When it came to putting on his game face, he was ready and would give anyone a run for their money, especially when it came to sprinting. But even at the moments where he was grinding the hardest against his competition, you could always count on looking over at him HUK ZLLPUN H O\NL ZTPSL VU OPZ MHJL ;OPZ ^HZ (UKYLZ ^L HSS RUL^ ALEXANDRA MENK But what Andres never imagined, was all the greatness and power he was going to be able to give back to this sport and to the SUP Community. He was not just a paddleboarder, he was a great guy with a great heart with the power to inspire and move a lot of people. /, /(+ ;/, 76>,9 ;6 9,<50;, <: (33 He had the power to make his way of living a example to follow. He made us look into our own live’s and appreciate the present even more. He made us get closer to our friends. And he made us love our loved ones even more. 44

Our Florida SUP community has now grown even stronger and closer after this tragedy, just the way Andres would want it. Kate Stohoviak I have practiced yoga for 18 years buy had only been on a sup board or any board on the water three times ILMVYL [OL 5HTHZ[L :\W *OHSSLUNL 0 ^LU[ V\[ HUK KPK T` WPJ[\YLZ MVY [OL JOHSSLUNL VU KPɈLYLU[ KH`Z :PUJL I didn't own a board and had to borrow a board from friends I couldn't do them every day but going out six [PTLZ [V KV `VNH H[ T` V^U WHJL VU [OL IVHYK HSSV^LK TL [V ÄUK T` IHSHUJL HUK WSH` ^P[O [OL LKNLZ VM T` poses in a totally new light. I found that adding the balance needed to stay on the board changed the feel of the poses and along with the ability to paddle out on the water and be totally alone with no distractions slowed me to enjoy my surroundings and nature more. I also took my daughter out with me two of those times and then a third for her to do pictures and she did the challenge as well. It was a fun bonding experience for us and I saw the fact that she could do the poses on [OL IVHYK I\PSK H Z[YVUNLY JVUÄKLUJL PU OLY :PUJL [OL JOHSSLUNL 0 OH]L IV\NO[ H IVHYK HUK WSHU [V L_[LUK T` `VNH JLY[PÄJH[PVU [V PUJS\KL Z\W `VNH HUK Z[HY[ [V [LHJO HZ 0 MV\UK [OLYL PZ UV[ H SV[ VM P[ VɈLYLK PU T` area. I would also like to later extend my teaching to kids around my daughter’s age and maybe talk to local camps about introducing sup yoga to kids in this area since I saw a huge curiosity and interest in it both in my daughter and her friends.
Gretchen Turner I've practiced yoga since high school and rowed boats since before I can remember and when I heard about SUP yoga I was both curious and excited. Being out on the water has always brought a deep peace and that feeling is very similar to what one experiences with yoga- it seemed like a perfect union! I started doing some research and came across Lauren Peterson's gorgeous pictures and helpful tutorials on her @namasteSUP Instagram. I joined up with the challenge looking for inspiration to get my practice on the water. We all hopefully grow and transition from what we thought we could UL]LY KV [V [OLU OH]PUN KVUL P[ HUK Ă„UKPUN V\[ that now we want something we thought we ^V\SK UL]LY L]LU ZL[ HZ H NVHS ;OPZ WYVJLZZ many times involves leaving our comfort zone, starting over, re-learning, adapting, and sometimes even being so humble as to recognize we’ve reached a plateau or pinnacle in our primary goal. In the world of sports – this is very visible. Athletes strive their

He is a well known legend in Professional Flowriding, and equally liked by his peers. We were checking out the center of the big bang – getting the VɉJPHS [V\Y H[ -SV^9PKLY PU :HU +PLNV ;OPZ incredible company continues to establish new FlowRider wave houses all over the world. In all this time of creating everything from Barrels to Blow Up FlowRider systems, [OLYL OHZ ILLU VUL ZOHTHU VM [OL ÅV^ ZLU[ to secure the wave and demonstrate the full capabilities of this inland experience, the mythical Silveira. Sean Silveira is just fantastic to watch. He has a giant focus and can just mesmerize an audience, like he just did in Brazil at the opening of a jaw dropping KLNYLL -SV^9PKLY :LL 7OV[VZ 0[Z UV[ hard to see that the best riders are the ones having the most fun; and that’s certainly him. I picked him up at Dallas/Ft. Worth International, where true to his style, all he had was a backpack full of board shorts and 80

t-shirts. We drove directly from the airport to Lake Ray Hubbard. Our buddy Ryan Gibson OHK OPZ ;PNt :\YM IVH[ [HRPUN HK]HU[HNL VM the high water, and invited us out to take a ML^ Y\UZ ILMVYL Z\UZL[ ;OL UPNO[ ^LU[ Q\Z[ as expected and we all enjoyed another ;L_HZ Z\UZL[ ^P[O NVVK JVTWHU` HUK JVVS water to remedy the heat. Silveira began a ML^ Y\UZ [V NL[ OPZ MLL[ \ZLK [V ^HRL Z\YÄUN HUK [OLU X\PJRS` ILNHU [V HTW \W OPZ ÅV^ into the wake. It’s impossible to achieve a new trick until you realize you have to fail. He has no fear of failure and that’s why he’s an achiever. Wham, straight out the gate, he went for a 3-shove right after his front side air. We all looked at each other after he wiped out – knowing that eventually we would see some high-energy combos from this guy. He thinks like a competitor and he rides like a person
having enormous amounts of pure fun. He was our spoiled boarder child for the weekend and we enjoyed every minute of P[ L_JLW[ ^OLU OL ^HZ :6 /<5.9@ OHOHOH After a much needed breakfast and morning UHW HUK [OLU S\UJO @LZ [OPZ N\` JHU LH[ we decided to throw down at Aquashop on [OL -SV^9PKLY ;OH[ HM[LYUVVU HUK L]LUPUN
all the guys came into town for the Flow :LYPLZ ;V\Y ;OL` ^LYL VɉJPHSS` JVTWL[PUN on Sunday and had the whole FlowRider to themselves to practice. I of course walked in and no one blinked twice‌ then the Jin to my Jang, Mister Silveira himself steps through the front door and the place begins to buzz. /L ^HZ Z\YYV\UKLK I` HSS OPZ SVUN [PTL ÅV^ mates, and even those that have seen him at their local FlowRider in the many other cities around the nation. He genuinely remembers everyone and is so humble in his interaction with his peers. I was hoping to see him go OHYK HUK NP]L [OLT H ÅV^ ZOV^ VU Z[HUK up, but he wanted to gel with some of his body boarding mates. He borrowed a board and just went bananas. He encouraged a few others to go harder and even showed a few tips to some of our visitors from Australia. ;OL -SV^ +VNZ HYYP]LK VU [OL (:/ I\Z HUK were all lined up for their runs. Considering that we had 30 people in the FlowRider, it all seemed to go smoothly; everyone taking turns and going big for the next guy. I got L_JP[LK ^OLU 0 ZH^ :LHU Ă„UHSS` NYHI HU HJ[\HS standup board, but none of us were ready for what we saw next. After some ridiculous [YPJR JVTIVZ [OH[ HYL [`WPJHS [V OPZ Y\UZ P L Âś RPJRĂ…PWZ OLLSĂ…PWZ ZOV]LZ ZOV]LZ L[J OL W\SSLK VɈ [OL PTWVZZPISL /L HSYLHK` had our attention and then does a Standup 82

Rodeo...I’ll let that sink in - a stand up rodeo. ;OL ^OVSL ]LU\L YVHYLK ^P[O HWWYV]HS /L clearly knows his ability and exceeds that because he knows how to get what he wants from the FlowRider. He hadn’t planned on competing because he was there to help judge, but was quickly convinced to bring his A-Game the next day and get in the line up. His attitude about life in general is encouraging. Who knows if he gets it from his Brazilian father or maybe from his SoCal lifestyle living in San Diego – what we do know, is that once your feet are used to riding something H IVHYK WLYOHWZ [OVZL MLL[ HYL KLZ[PULK to try anything and everything that is worth riding on. It becomes a part of our DNA. It is the reason we hop on longboards and skate through neighborhoods looking for that stoke

During his visit to Dallas, he heard about the < : 6WLU VM >HRL :\YÄUN ILPUN OLSK ZVVU PU ;? /L THKL [OL [YLR IHJR [V +HSSHZ competed and actually won 1st Place in Men’s Outlaw Skim. Keep in mind that this was his ÄYZ[ >HRL :\YÄUN JVTWL[P[PVU LU[LYLK :[H` tuned for more coverage online about Sean :PS]LPYH»Z IVHYKLY JYVZZPUN [V >HRL :\YÄUN We certainly expect him to land big sponsors quickly and take a few more podium spots. Oh and we are still going to see the growth that he and FlowRider continue to deliver, ZV +VU»[ >VYY` KLHY ÅV^ MHUZ ¶ /L»Z Z[PSS “bout that life!” Rumor and pics on his social media, even show him using straps now, and SLHYUPUN ZVTL ÅPWZ MYVT [OL SLNLUK VM [OL WaveHouse San Diego Barrel, FlowRider’s very own, Eric Silverman. PADDLING IN THE PACIFIC
NORTHWEST IN A DROUGHT By Nadia Almuti

Coming into this summer, many of the watersheds had less than 25 percent of their average snowpack. With a record low snowpack and persistent drought, we were forced to adapt and [Y` [V ÄUK JYLH[P]L WSHJLZ [V WHKKSLIVHYK HUK L_WSVYL nearby rivers. My home base for paddling this summer was White Salmon, WA. Nestled on the northern edge of the Columbia River Gorge, this town receives its UHTLZHRL MYVT [OL HTHaPUN >OP[L :HSTVU 9P]LY ;OL river is fed by underground springs so even during a SV^ ^H[LY `LHY P[ YHYLS` NL[Z [VV SV^ [V WHKKSL ;OL White Salmon is an amazing technical river with L]LY`[OPUN MYVT JSHZZ 00 = ;OL TPKKSL ZLJ[PVU PZ H [PNO[ M\U Z[YL[JO VM JSHZZ 000 0= YHWPKZ LUKPUN ^P[O /\Z\T -HSSZ ;OL 3V^LY ZLJ[PVU ILNPUZ ^P[O H JSHZZ 000 drop called Rattlesnake and features a fun surf wave JHSSLK *H]L >H]L ;OL )V[[VT ZLJ[PVU RUV^U HZ [OL Lower-Lower, was unnavigable due to a hydroelectric dam until recently. With the dam removed, this Z[\UUPUN JSHZZ 00 0= JHU`VU PZ UV^ VWLU [V WHKKSPUN 0[ WS\UNLZ KLLW PU[V [OL LHY[O ^P[O [V^LYPUN IHZHS[ JSPɈZ on either side surrounded by surreal mossy forests. It winds through the canyon and empties out into the mighty Columbia River, the 4th largest river in the US.

Scared that we would not be allowed to paddle the White, a group of us snuck in a rugged quarter-mile trail winding deep within the canyon to the historic hydroelectric power plant at the base of Celestial Falls. We put in at the base of the falls and paddled down. Another waterfall portage later we were going down what I would guess [V IL *-: VM ^H[LY ;OPZ PZ HU L_[YLTLS` SV^ ÅV^ ;OL JSHZZ 00 YHWPKZ ^LYL ]LY` ZOHSSV^ HUK [LJOUPJHS ( ML^ HSZV YLX\PYLK H ^HSR [OYV\NO ;OL ILH\[PM\S HYPK SHUKZJHWL HUK \UPX\L NLVSVN` ^HZ KLÄUP[LS` ^VY[O all the hard work of getting into and down the river. Paddling out into the Deschutes at 4000 CFS, felt like entering the ocean in contrast to the volume of water we were just paddling. Despite the record low snowpack and drought [OL 7HJPÄJ 5VY[O^LZ[ ^HZ MHJPUN [OPZ Z\TTLY [OL paddling in the region is remarkable. Now that I am back home in Colorado, I look forward to returning to the Northwest when the rains come, the waters rise, and other rivers are accessible.

Waves can be sought out all year along [OL JVHZ[SPULZ I\[ PU [OL H\[\TU HUK ^PU[LY H KPɈLYLU[ situation arises wreaking havoc and providing breaks to all of the freshwater surfers across the glacier dug waters of our Great Lakes. ;OL ¸>P[JO VM 5V]LTILY¹ PZ [OL [LYT \ZLK [V describe the intense winds that pummel the Great Lakes every autumn, threating ships and harbors, and creating amazing swells. Now it doesn’t necessarily produce the longest rides, and the majority of surfable waves are knee high to overhead, but the point PZ [OH[ P[»Z Z[PSS Z\YÄUN 0[ Z[PSS OHZ H KLKPJH[LK Z\YÄUN culture, sanctioned surf events, and a melting pot of multicultural surfers. We bring you to Ontario, home of local standup-paddle surfer Josh Gordon, where their Canadian Province boarders three of the Great Lakes and provides ample opportunities for surfers to explore, expand, and grow their passion.
