Bingo Rising in Britain It’s been no surprise to us here at The Bingo Nugget to see the popularity of Bingo across the pond. Recently a survey was conducted that found bingo has surpassed 1.9 million people playing monthly. In fact, it’s so popular that if it were a sport, it would surpass tennis and be #6 as activity played by people; but alas, it is considered a game. The number of online players have increased by 50% and are expected to rise further in the months of December & January, aka Bingo Months in the United Kingdom. Daub on friends!

The Cove

606 W. Cypress | San Antonio, TX 78212 Open at 11:00am Tuesday-Sunday (210) 227-2683 My resolution this year was to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. First on my list is food. The Cove - a restaurant that is a bar that is a car wash that is a laundromat. It’s very relaxed and casual inside with a well-worn concrete floor, fun decor, and family style seating. I was pleased to see a kid’s playscape and a dog run outside along the picnic tables and open-air bar. Yes, they are dog-friendly so bring your four-legged friend. I dove right into my resolution by ordering the Seafood Special which is way, way beyond my usual dinner choices. Fish and taco have never been items that I thought went together but it was delicious. One fish and one shrimp taco served with a side spinach salad for $12. If you aren’t ready for seafood try the handcrafted

burgers for which they have developed some unusual combinations, starting at $8. They pride themselves on offering sustainable, organic, and local ingredients which fits right in with today’s health-conscious lifestyles. The menu includes gluten-free and vegan dishes as well as kids’ choices. If you’re not there for the great food, they have more than 50 Texas beers on tap, live music, a car wash, and laundromat. The staff is fast and friendly and dedicated to ensuring you have a great time. The Cove is a true Texas original that supports local growers, musicians, and artisans. I highly recommend stopping in for a great evening of fun and a yummy meal whether you’re yearning for fish tacos or burgers.

More Mindful in 2017 The Quietest Way To A New You

In Summer 2016 Time Magazine ran a special edition issue that hit stores with a simple title, “MINDFULNESS.” I had been deeply intrigued by the thought of “tuning into my body” and being more aware of what I was eating rather than eating while working/ playing/watching TV (hint at what I’m currently doing, eating while writing this article). As I dug deeper into the research of what mindfulness truly is, I began with the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something. So what is this and why are teams like our San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks now enforcing “mindfulness” training?

Practice Mindfulness

1

2 3 4 This is a way to say meditate, yes. But meditation isn’t just incense burning, poses that hurt your bottom, and songs being chanted out. Yes, that is in some forms but other forms of mindfulness can be as simple as being aware of your surroundings for just a few

minutes. You can practice mindfulness even in the car, just by feeling the wheel against your hands, focusing on what the steering wheel feels like, is it weathered, is it smooth, is it threaded? These are all things that you can truly focus on. I remember around the same time

as the TIME article came out, Apple came out with their new Apple Watch that reminded people to breathe. The internet made jokes in every corner, yet just slowing down and focusing on our breathing has shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels.

I recently heard a quote be where your feet are and this is no more ap SDUHQW WKDQ ZKHQ ,èP ZLWK P\ IDPLO\ RU even at a restaurant. I hope in 2017 we can all be where our feet are. We will be taking a journey this year every few months to check in and see where you are with your mindfulness practice.

7 Tips on Mindfulness 1. Practice mindfulness during routine activities Playing bingo you can practice mindfulness. Focus on just playing bingo, pulling pull tabs. What do those feel like? Feel the cushion of the seat beneath you. What does the dauber feel like? Does it have a certain smell? 2. Practice right when you wake up I like to do this every single day. MODERN MOM

We all crave those close moments with our children that make our hearts melt. Connection is as essential to us parents as it is to our children. When our relationship is strong, it’s also sweet -- so we receive as much as we give. That’s what makes parenting worth all the blood, sweat and tears.

But we’re only human. There are days when all we can do is meet our children’s most basic needs: Feed them, bathe them, keep an encouraging tone, hug them, and get them to sleep at a reasonable hour so we can do it all over again tomorrow. Given that parenting is the toughest job on earth -- and we often do it in our spare time, after being separated all day -- the only way to keep a strong bond with our children is to build in daily habits of connection. What kinds of habits? 1. Aim for 12 hugs (or physical connections) every day. Hug your child first thing in the morning, when you say goodbye, when you're re-united, at bedtime, and often in between. If your tween or teen rebuffs your advances when she first walks in the door, realize that with older kids you have to ease into the connection. Get her settled with a cool drink, and chat as you give a foot rub. (Seem like going above and beyond? It's a foolproof way to hear what happened in her life today. You'll find yourself glad, many times, if you have that high on your priority list.) 2. Connect before transitions. Kids have a hard time transitioning from one thing to another. If you look her in the eye, use her name, and play a bit to get her giggling, you'll fill her cup and make sure she has the inner resources to manage herself through a transition. For instance, mornings go much easier when you start with a five minute snuggle upon awakening to help your child transition from sleep into the executive functions of dressing and teeth brushing. 3. Play. Laughter and rough-housing keep you connected with your child by stimulating endorphins and oxytocin in both of you. Making playfulness a daily habit also gives your child a chance to work through the anxieties and upsets that otherwise make him feel disconnected -- and more likely to act out. And play helps kids want to cooperate. Which is likely to work better: "Come eat your breakfast now!" or "Little Gorilla, it's time for breakfast -Look, you have bugs and bananas on your oatmeal!"

4. Turn off technology when you interact with your child. Really. Your child will remember for the rest of his life that he was important enough to his parents that they turned off phones and music to listen to him. This is particularly important in the car, because the lack of eye contact in a car takes the pressure off, so kids (and adults) are more likely to open up and share. 5. Welcome emotion. Sure, it's inconvenient. But your child needs to express his emotions or they'll drive his behavior. So accept the meltdowns, don't let the anger trigger you, and welcome the tears and fears that always hide behind the anger. Remember that you're the one he trusts enough to cry with, and breathe your way through it. Afterwards, he'll feel more relaxed, cooperative, and closer to you. (Yes, this is really, really hard. Regulating our own emotions is the hardest part of parenting. But that doesn't mean we're excused from trying.) 6. Listen, and Empathize. Connection starts with listening. Bite your tongue if you need to, except to say "Wow!....I see....Really?...How was that for you?...Tell me more..." The habit of seeing things from your child's perspective will ensure that you treat her with respect and look for win/win solutions. It will help you see the reasons for behavior that would otherwise drive you crazy. And it will help you regulate your own emotions so when your buttons get pushed and you find yourself in "fight or flight," your child doesn't look so much like the enemy.

http://www.ahaparenting.com/blog/10_habits_to_stay_connected_to_your_child

7. Slow down and savor the moment. Share the moment with your child: let him smell the strawberries before you put them in the smoothie. Put your hands in the running water together and share the cool rush of the water. Smell his hair. Listen to his laughter. Look him in the eyes. Connect in the magnificence of the present moment. Which is really the only way we can connect. (For most parents, this is also the secret to being able to tolerate playing that same game, yet again.) 8. Bedtime snuggle and chat. Set your child's bedtime a wee bit earlier with the assumption that you'll spend some time visiting. Those companionable, safe moments of connection invite whatever your child is currently grappling with to the surface, whether it's something that happened at school, the way you snapped at her this morning, or her worries about tomorrow's field trip. Acknowledge feelings. Reassure your child that you hear her concern, and that together you'll solve it, tomorrow. The next day, be sure to follow up. You'll be amazed how your relationship with your child deepens. And don't give this habit up as your child gets older. Late at night is often the only time teens will open up. 8. Show up. Most of us go through life half-present. But your child has only about 900 weeks of childhood with you before he leaves your home. He'll be gone before you know it. Try this as a practice: When you're engaged with your child, just be right here, right now. You won't be able to do it all the time. But if you do it every day for a bit, you'll find yourself doing it more and more. Because you'll find it creates those moments with your child that make your heart melt. You are as independent as can be this month. Take time to practice your personal skills that you’ve been meaning to work on. This will be an important project to take on as this year you have big goals, the best way to start them is with the best you possible.

You are beginning your year on a high hill and it’s going to take a lot to bring you down. Be careful of those wanting to see you fail, don’t be discouraged by the obstacles that are coming your way in 2017. Progress is being made and only you stand in your way.

The holidays are still buzzing in your ear and you have an excellent outlook in 2017. You are sitting mighty well at the beginning of the year and need to make sure you keep up this momentum. You have a very aggressive spirit in the look for love.

Surrounding yourself with others and helping is right where you feel comfortable and need to be right at this moment. This month you are seeing yourself shine in service and gaining strength through these issues. Remember that your strength is achieved in your weakness.

You feel like you’re dancing on cloud nine after having an amazing end to 2016. You’re beginning the year with a new outlook on your heart and are starting out on top. Do yourself a favor and let others ĆJKW WKHLU RZQ EDWWOHV WKLV PRQWK

New year, new you, new project. You know that idea you’ve had in the back of your mind and you can’t get out of your head? Start it right now. Get out the planning materials and get going on the big goals you have for 2017. You have planetary momentum on your side.

While you know your needs are necessary and impactful, you need to put them back for a bit and focus on others right now. You mean well and are excited about the projects that you have on the pipeline, hold back for a bit. It may be time to reprioritize items in your life.

You are feeling the support you need to get the projects you’ve wanted to get off the ground going this month. You may feel the push to be independent but do not take it, listen to others and their advice. You need to take in as much information as possible this month.

Do not disregard the actions of your nighttime, this is when you get in and recharge for the day. Night opens the way for daytime to take over so do not take it lightly that you need this time. There is activity occurring even if you can’t outwardly see it.

Shift your energies a bit more homebound this month. Is there a project you’ve been itching at starting and don’t quite know how to go about it? Now is the time to get into the nitty gritty and begin planning for your attack on the issue. Focus on where your heart is.

LITTLE DAUBERS 4TH ANNUAL

Toy Give Away This years Toy Give Away was huge success just like years previous! We helped bring joy to over 2,500 children in San Antonio. The kids were able to pick out a toy for themselves, take photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well as food and games. The way we fund this is well, through our ushers and callers – they fund the toy giveaway and have a very large stake in the Golden Bingo Family Toy Giveaway. Not only do they donate funds and volunteer their time in set up and the event itself.

DIABETIC recipe

Curry-Spiced Chicken Breasts

One of the easiest things to cook is chicken. A versatile protein, it’s the “go-to” for many home cooks. For many, it spells “comfort” whether cooked plain, spiced, or marinated. And the leftovers can be chopped and used for stir-fries as is common in Asian cuisines, or sliced and added to wraps. This recipe is a great way to make use of curry powder, here further enhanced with garlic and ginger. INGREDIENTS 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon curry powder 1 tablespoon grated garlic 1 tablespoon grated ginger Salt and pepper to taste 2 pounds boneless and skinless chicken breast (4 halves)

DIRECTIONS

1 Preheat the broiler to “High” for 20 minutes, placing the rack midway in the center of the oven. 2 In a mixing bowl, stir together the olive oil, curry, garlic, and ginger. Season with salt and pepper. 3 Add the chicken and toss until every piece is coated evenly throughout. Place the chicken breasts on a baking sheet and broil until the juices run clear and the top is golden, about 10 minutes. Let rest for 15 minutes before slicing.

ANY WAY

MOANA (2016) 95% from Rotten Tomatoes

a term used to describe a bingo “pattern.” for example, if the bingo pattern was the letter t “any way” that means the t could upside down or tuned 90 degrees left or 90 degrees right.

Critics Consensus: With a title character as threedimensional as its lush animation and a story that adds fresh depth to Disney’s time-tested formula, Moana is truly a family-friendly adventure for the ages.

36 THE BINGO NUGGET // JAN 2017

Synopsis: Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped - and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/guide/holiday-movie-scorecard-2016/3/
