BINGOLICIOUS LOUIE ITALIAN RESTAURANT Tucked behind Chili’s

WEIRD NEWS WEIRD AND STRANGE NEWS STORIES FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

4679 NW Loop 410, San Antonio 78229 210-481-4360 Open everyday at 11:00am

A little over a year ago, Louie Italian Restaurant opened their doors in San Antonio to create delicious meals from the very best ingredients while making friends and fans. You can taste their twenty-five year old love affair with food in every bite. Start with their family bread recipe which they bake every thirty minutes to ensure freshness at every table. Next, try the homemade soup or a fresh garden salad served with every entrée but be careful not to fill up because the star of the show is the main dish. My favorite is the Manicotti; a fresh pasta crêpe filled with ricotta cheese, covered in a marinara sauce and baked (never microwaved). The menu is full other affordable options if you are not a pasta lover, anything from sub sandwiches to steaks or seafood. Don’t forget to pair your meal with the perfect wine from their full-service bar. Their dedicated staff will make your experience comfortable and pleasant; they do a great job at making you feel well cared for and important. The inviting atmosphere welcomes your entire family, office party, special event, or romantic couples. You can avoid the wait by calling ahead or with a reservation. It’s located just six miles from Bandera Late Night Bingo so stop in for a memorable meal on your way to a winning it big!

Gotta Catch ‘Em All A very rare Pokémon sighting in New Orleans when her citizens woke up the morning of August 3rd. Overnight a statue of the infamous Pikachu was erected in the center of a broken fountain in the middle of Coliseum Square Park in the “Big Easy” with the inscription “#Pokémonument” with the base of the statue resembling a Pokéball. As of the middle of August, the statue has been removed and will be auctioned off with proceeds to benefit neighborhood parks.

HEALTHY LIVING

LEAD THE CHARGE ON

CHILDHOOD OBESITY Here’s a little secret about me I grew up a chubby kid. Scratch that, I grew up an obese kid. I cannot remember the last time I was a “normal” size. I remember my parents searching feverishly through stacks of clothes at Solo Serve for jeans with the infamous “H” for “Husky.” This cycle occurred over and over again due to my brother also following in my steps of obesity. People who want to say that childhood obesity isn’t a problem maybe didn’t grow up with the same struggles that my family had to endure time and again. It really doesn’t have to be this way though. Childhood obesity, obesity in general, is entirely cyclical and can be genetic.

GENES ARE NOT DESTINY You may remember that your body is made up of a code called genes. Genes essentially dictate exactly what you look like on the outside and on the inside. However in some people your diet (the way you eat not a low carb/high carb/etc. thing) can trigger some genes to essentially go into “obese mode.” However, most people do have some kind of make up in their body to obesity, depending on their family history and ethnicity. This becomes a situation when you move from genetic makeup that will require some changes in diet, lifestyle, and could be environmental factors.

THERE IS TIME TO CHANGE Ready availability of certain kinds of foods that are not sold in gas stations, pharmacies, and office supply stores. Think the wrapper - be careful of the wrapper. Hand out fresh fruits and vegetables for snack; those tortillas would be a fantastic option if you pair it up with deli turkey and some avocado.

NOTHING MORE CAN HELP BUT: GET UP, GET OUT, AND HAVE FUN! MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR.

The first step to a fun and effective family fitness plan is a goal. Maybe you’re concerned about your child’s weight, or your own. Maybe you’ve noticed your family’s habits and hobbies tend to be sedentary instead of active. Maybe you made a resolution (for the New Year, or a birthday, or back-to-school season) to change your lifestyle. Whatever your reason, there are lots of ways to get motivated and get started on improving your family’s fitness. Do send the message that physical activity is a fun, healthy habit that makes you feel good, not a chore to be endured.

HEALTHY BAKED CHICKEN NUGGETS & ZUCCHINI STICKS What can be more kid friendly than chicken nuggets, even the pickiest kids like them. Once I’m in breading mode I usually make breaded zucchini sticks as well and bake them all at the same time along with some pasta and a salad for a complete meal. Baked zucchini sticks, a great way to get even the pickiest of eaters to enjoy zucchini! BREADING • 4 tsp olive oil • 6 tbsp whole wheat seasoned breadcrumbs • 4 tbsp panko • 4 tbsp grated parmesan cheese • 1/4 tsp kosher salt • fresh black pepper, to taste • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

CHICKEN & ZUCCHINI • 16 oz (2 large) skinless boneless chicken breasts, cut into even bit sized pieces • 4 medium (7 oz each) zucchinis, ends trimmed • 1/2 cups quick marinara sauce for dipping (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Preheat oven to 425°. Spray a baking sheet with olive oil spray. Put the olive oil in one bowl and the breadcrumbs, panko and parmesan cheese in another. Season chicken & zucchini with salt and pepper, then put in the bowl with the olive oil and mix well so the olive oil evenly coats all of the chicken. Put a few chunks of chicken at a time into the breadcrumb mixture to coat, then on the baking sheet. Dip zucchini sticks into oil then into bread crumb and cheese mixture, Place the breaded zucchini in a single layer. Lightly spray the top of chicken & zucchini with olive oil spray Bake chicken 8 – 10 minutes. Turn over then cook another 4 – 5 minutes or until cooked though. Bake zucchini for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve with 1/2 cup marinara sauce for dipping. September | The Bingo Nugget | 11

MODERN MOM

Becoming a Healthly Active Family ER

Y TOGETH IT S E B O D O O H D IL H C G IN S R REVE

With September being National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and going along with the Healthy Living article I wanted to help give you and your family some ideas to help make steps towards a solution. One in 3 children in the United States are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. The good news? Childhood obesity can be prevented. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for kids to eat healthier and get more active. Creating a family fitness plan need not be complicated or overwhelming. What it really means is a new commitment to adding more activity to your life. Coming up with a plan for how to do that makes it more likely that you will succeed. (It might help to think of it as a challenge you tackle together.) Family Fitness Plan Dos and Don’ts Do send the message that physical activity is a fun, healthy habit that makes you feel good, not a chore to be endured. You can do this by: •

• • •

• •

Setting a good example. Choose action over electronics whenever you can. Walk to the store instead of driving, take the stairs, and shelve the leaf-blower in favor of a rake. Even if you’re not athletic, you can move! Enjoying exercise. Whether it’s a vigorous kickboxing class or a leisurely walk, tell your child how you feel after you’re done. Energized? Happier? Tired, but proud of what you accomplished? Playing together. Kids love your attention. Take them to the playground, go outside for a game of catch, or have a spontaneous dance party. Praising effort, not results. Your child won’t be able to ride a two-wheeler or sink a basket on her first attempt. To fend off frustration (in both inactive and active kids), be sure to acknowledge how hard they’re trying. Offering positive reinforcement. If your child makes a healthy choice, notice—out loud. When he learns a new skill, record it on video and show it to friends and family. Asking her to teach you. Is she a star skater or a whiz at water polo? Request a lesson! Active kids love to show off their expertise.

Don’t fall prey to confidence zappers like using exercise as punishment, offering food as a reward, or using scare tactics. Instead of “If you watch too much TV, you’ll get fat and sick,” say, “Riding your bike helps make your legs and heart strong.”

How can National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month make a difference? We can all use this month to raise awareness about the obesity epidemic and show people how they can take steps toward a solution. Here are just a few ideas: •

Encourage families to make small changes, like keeping fresh fruit within reach or going on a family walk after dinner.

•

Motivate teachers and administrators to make schools healthier. Help them provide healthy food options and daily physical activities for students.

•

Ask doctors and nurses to be leaders in their communities by supporting programs to prevent childhood obesity. September | The Bingo Nugget |

SENIOR LIVING

MAKE FIBER FUN AGAIN

It hits you like a ton of bricks - you’ve aged. The first step may be that you’ve found yourself blocked up, your blood pressure could have increased right along with your blood sugar. Fiber is one of those items that your doctor has told you about since you were in your younger years like sunscreen, exercise, sleep, or drinking enough water. Yes, fiber is right up there with importance. As you age, better believe it’s happening to you, our digestive system stops functioning as well as it once did. It’s so much more than constipation, you’re body has the inability to absorb nutrients all together. There’s a way to fix this without having to take over the counter remedies - keep it natural and eat your fiber.

22

1. Whole grains can’t get much better

2. Vegetables The greener the better.

sources of fiber for seniors because many are soft and easy to chew. Oatmeal is probably the easiest, quickest, and most efficient form of protein. Want to get a little crazy, add fresh fruit for antioxidants and up the ante with milk for dairy and protein punches.

Much like the green you’re trying to win at the bingo hall, leafy greens are wonderful options to getting in your fiber. Green peas have over 8 grams of fiber per cup. These are easy to add as a side to your meals or add as a punch of color and sweetness to pasta or rice.

3. All Carbs Are Not Created Equal

4. An Apple A Day fruits! Fruits are

Yes, you’ve heard that carbs are bad. We’ve all heard it from a time that we were probably way too young. But not all carbs are created equal; potatoes are a prime example of this. Pop one in the microwave for a few minutes (about 8-9 for a fully soft potato) and cut open once complete. They pack in 3 grams of fiber for a small potato. Want to get a bit more vegetable bang? Try a sweet potato; just be careful and watch your glycemic index.

a fantastic choice and can truly cure a sweet tooth. They’re great for a morning or afternoon snack. If sweet things aren’t your jam, go for something sour or a bit tart like the wonderful raspberry. Raspberries have 8 grams of fiber per cup and have been linked to reduce the risk for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons.

ABSOLUTE BEAUTY BY CELESTE WHOLE BODY BENEFITS OF

COCONUT OIL Coconut oil has been dubbed “The healthiest oil on earth; not only for its versatility in the kitchen but for its healing properties and positive effects on the body and mind. Roughly 85% of coconut oil contains saturated fats, lauric acid being the predominate fatty acid is known to kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungus that in turn creates whole body health benefits.

SKIN HEALTH- Can be used as a full body and face moisturizer and can also be used to treat an array of skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and dry or flaky skin. Rubbing warm coconut oil on your body followed by a hot salt bath will not only expel impurities from your skin but improve circulation as well.

HAIR HEALTH- Can be used to treat dandruff, encourage hair growth, and promote shiny healthy hair. Using a small amount of oil massage scalp for 5 minutes then rinse off using your normal shampoo. Doing this will increase blood flow, encourage hair growth and kill bacteria on the scalp.

WEIGHT LOSS- Stimulates digestion with its lubricating effect and can also help in preventing constipation. The saturated fats in coconut oil have anti-microbial properties that fight harmful bacteria and parasites that cause digestive issues.

HEART HEALTH- About 50% of saturated fats in coconut oil is made up of lauric acid and not processed oils that contain unnatural chemicals. Researchers have shown in numerous studies that cultures that consume large quantities of coconut oil have very low rates of heart disease and show normal blood cholesterol levels.

IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT- The lauric acid in coconut oil is also found in breast milk, it helps support and build the immune system of a growing baby. Virgin coconut oil has the highest concentration of lauric acid outside of mothers milk. This fatty acid helps support a healthy immune system with its anti-viral properties. 28

THINGS TO DO

Hope Graffiti Park Once the foundation of condominiums, now lays home to the Hope Outdoor Galley, also known as Graffiti Park. An imaginative outdoor gallery for anyone interested in art, skyline views, and the obvious graffiti. In most local areas, graffiti is a way to mark one’s territory, and is usually frowned upon in any local community. The city of Austin has turned one area into an artist’s dream allowing anyone to display their imagination on concrete walls up to three stories high. Open 24 hours, Hope Gallery is home to some of Austin’s best graffiti artists; and, if this type of art is not your thing, the views from here are breathtaking. Kids and families

of all ages can come to witness this one of a kind art gallery, and can even display art of their own. That’s right, anyone can come with a can of spray paint to unleash their creative side. One of the first artist’s recruited to tag up these walls is an artist named Shepard Fairey, who is famous for his Barack Obama’s “Hope” poster from the 2008 Presidential Election. Now artists from all over the world come to express their love for street art, design, and culture. Be prepared to climb a steep hill to get to the top, and once achieved, you will see why locals and tourists flock to this one of a kind art exhibit.
