Hello Bingo Nugget Readers! Welcome to our first ever completely digital issue of The Bingo Nugget due to coronavirus! We are happy to be able to share our magazine with you digitally during this temporary pause of our bingo games. We promise to bring you the same, good articles you expect to see in print. As soon as the halls reopen , we will be printing our paper magazines for you again. We know you are practicing social distancing during this time and we have some tips to help keep you busy and entertained during this time. We miss you all so much and can’t wait to see you again soon. In the meantime, stay busy with our tips over at Modern Mom. This April you can also make it an Earth friendly one with reducing waste with Healthy Living.
Hello, my lovely bingo players! I know you are not sitting in your favorite bingo hall and leisurely scrolling through your magazine. Instead, you are reading this on your device, probably in your own home. As you know, all of our halls are temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic that is raging across the country. Golden Bingo Family has always placed the health and safety of our players and employees as our number one priority. We have done everything we could to keep our bingo halls playing and our players safe with increased sanitation measures and health policies. We are not sure how long we will remain closed. We continue to abide by all state and local orders and will keep following the situation. For as long as it is considered necessary, our contact will have to remain virtual. So, we invite you to find and follow your favorite hall on Facebook. We will be there, chatting, playing games and remembering the bingo fun! If you are roaming through your photos and find some good ones from the bingo halls, please consider sharing with us! Send us a picture via Facebook or email us at nugget@swipetrack. We miss seeing your lovely faces in bingo halls and sharing the excitement of the game and the joy of the wins with you. Make sure to stay in touch! Take care of yourself, Augie 6
THE BINGO NUGGET // APRIL 2020
Christmas Lights to Brighten the COVID-19 Pandemic It’s beginning to look a little like the most surreal Christmas anyone’s ever seen. About 100 million Americans are now under instructions to shelter in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. And some are responding in an unusual way: by putting up their holiday lights. In an effort to raise spirits, seasonal decor is emerging from garages, sheds and closets for a rare spring appearance. Over the weekend, Hallmark Channel even broke out its Christmas movies. Brian Earl, host of the Christmas Past podcast, said the holiday got lost amid impeachment news and a calendar that had the fewest days possible between Thanksgiving and Christmas. “So what we’re seeing now feels to be equal parts do-over of 2019 and grabbing at something that feels warm and comforting,” he said.
Las Vegas Strip closed for the first time in over 55 years In an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced a state of emergency and forced the closure of all nonessential businesses for 30 days, including the iconic casinos of the Las Vegas Strip. Although some of the properties had already shut their doors, the order officially meant that the Strip would be closed for the first time in 57 years, and perhaps only for the fourth time since gambling was legalized in the state in 1931.
Not the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, nor the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on Oct. 1, 2017 caused the Strip to power down. The last time that action on the strip grinded to a halt was Nov. 25, 1963, for the funeral of President John F. Kennedy. Images from the vacant hotels and empty gambling floors have been circulating on social media, but the big shock comes from seeing the Strip at night, without it’s usual flash and neon to light up the sky. healthy living
We would be amiss to talk about healthy living if we did not stop for a second (or in our case, one monthly issue) and talk about the health of our planet. With Earth Day being April 20th, it seemed appropriate to see how we can help keep our planet healthy. One of the simple changes each and every one of us can do would be to learn how to manage our waste. You likely have trash pickup twice a week in your area, most do. Did you ever wonder what happens to it? Some cities, like San Francisco and Seattle, are able to recycle more than they send to landfills, but the majority of the U.S. sends their trash to the dump. So, in an effort to keep Texas as clean as possible … sending less trash to the dump would help immensely! You would be surprised how easily you could do that. Let’s look at some ideas each household can implement to try to do our share for Earth.
RECYCLE
• All plastic bottles can be recycled, even your
Ok, this first one is pretty obvious. You may have a recycling trash can, but you are not using it yet. Why not? It doesn’t take that much time to put your water bottles or soda cans on the side.
off. This will allow them to be compressed
If you are recycling, are you doing it properly? Here’s some tips: • Always recycle glass, it can be recycled endlessly. • Wash off any food or liquid from your bottles, canisters or cans. Give them a good rinse under running water to make sure they are clean. • You can recycle almost any kind of paper, not just newspapers. So, feel free to recycle your kid’s school paper (those handouts seem to multiply!), envelopes and even toilet paper and paper towel tubes.
10
THE BINGO NUGGET // APRIL 2020
salad dressing bottle, but always take the cap easier later. • Always break up your cardboard boxes when recycling. Flattening them saves space. When in doubt on what can be recycled, it is best to check your trash service provider, as each recycling center may have slightly different rules.
REDUCE YOUR FOOD WASTE According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the largest component of municipal solid waste sent to landfill is food. It seems to stand that the most significant way to decrease your household waste would be reducing your food scraps. The best way to do that is to start planning your shopping. See what you can mix and match to make the most of your groceries. Does the recipe call for egg yolk only? Use the egg whites to make a bundt cake! Does anyone in your vicinity have chickens or pigs? Ask them what kind of foods they may need for the animals. Warning: Meat is usually not ok! If you are feeling up for it, you can start a composting pile in your backyard.
AVOID SINGLE USE PLASTIC This is a big one and you can make small changes that will create a big impact so easily! While recycling your water bottles is obviously better than throwing them out, not using water bottles in the first place would be even better! Pick up a nice reusable water bottle. Tap water has stricter quality and health standards in the U.S. than bottled water, so there is really no reason to keep buying water. What do you do with all of the plastic bags you get at H-E-B? Even if you try to use them for your bathroom trash can liners, you likely cannot use each and every single one of them. H-E-B sometimes puts single items in individual bags, making for a truly impressive pile on your kitchen counter after just one shopping trip. Instead of throwing them all in the trash after every trip, buy reusable bags on your next trip and simply keep them in your car. If you do not have a reusable insulated bag for your frozen items, you must get at least that one. Another easy way to save the landfills - and oceans - from filling up with plastic is skipping the straw. In just the U.S. alone, one estimate suggests 500 million straws are used every single day. Straws may seem like such a small item, but they are contributing to a big environmental problem. So, the next time you place a drink order, kindly ask for the waiter/bartender to skip the straw. If you absolutely need or want a straw, reusable straws made out of silicone or metal are available for purchase. Zip lock bags are another popular household item that is very practical to use, but quite bad for the environment. Sometimes a bag can be reused, but most times, we will just throw it out and grab a new one next time. Why don’t you give reusable bags or containers a go? If you are sending your child to school with a sandwich, you can buy a sandwich container for just 3-4 dollars at TJ Maxx, Home Goods or Marshalls and simply wash it at the end of the day and reuse the next day. If you line your crock pot with a liner, try doing without it. Yes, the bowl will need to be washed, but ultimately both of these changes will save not just the planet, but your wallet, as well. MODERN MOM
HOW TO STAY BUSY
While Social Distancing
If you’re like most parents around the world right now, you are somewhere between losing your mind and trying to figure out what to do with the children all day. Somewhere between trying to show your family how to properly ration the food in the fridge for a few weeks and not eating everything in pantry in a few days. Just remember we didn’t have time to plan for this unexpected leave from school and work so give yourself some grace as we navigate through this coronavirus pandemic. Luckily most school districts are sending work home or finding a virtual way to teach. This helps get the weekdays back into a schedule. I’ve been waking my kids up at their normal school time, making breakfast and getting dressed the way we would as if we were “going” to school. Repeating their normal schedule has saved me a little stress because it’s what we are all used to. So learn your new normal and ease into it.
DISTANCE LEARNING
Distance learning: Online education classes for every age and grade. This goes along with school and education but there are lots of online resources that are free right now. Here are several free or discounted online learning resources for pre-K-12 students to complete from home to keep up the learning (and to save you from yet another viewing of Frozen 2 on Disney Plus). Scholastic Learn at Home- Scholastic’s free Learn at Home program includes 20 days’ worth of curricula to help students continue learning even when school is closed. https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/ learnathome.html Khan Academy - Khan Academy is a free online learning platform that offers practice exercises, instructional videos and a personalized learning dashboard for students to learn subjects including math, science, computer programming, history, art history and economics from home. In light of the recent school closures, Khan Academy released daily schedules for students in pre-K through grade 12 to follow from home. https://www.khanacademy.org
and keep it simple. We don’t know how long this is going to last so we have lots of time for LOTS of activities. I said create because a lot can fall under that umbrella. All sorts of crafting, baking or creating anything in any part of the house(in or out). The possibilities are endless so I’m just going to list some ideas!

GARDENING MADE EASY
It’s a scary world out there right now. There is a new coronavirus out there and seniors are considered a high risk group. Anyone over the age of 60 should exercise caution and if you have any underlying medical condition (don’t most of us?) or if you are over 80 years old, you should be extra careful. At the time of writing this, Bexar county where Golden Bingo Family is headquartered, together with many counties and cities in Texas, is under shelter-in-place orders. We are constantly reminded to stay at home if possible, if we go out to keep away from other people and to wash, wash, wash those hands. At the same time, the weather is getting nicer, the days are getting longer and you are probably missing your normal life. To help you find a new normal, why don’t you consider fixing up your yard and picking up gardening? This activity will help you stay active and healthy, keep you out in the fresh air, and if you choose to plant new fruits, vegetables and flowers, you will be reaping benefits of this for months to come! If you are in good shape, you may not have any issues dropping down on your knees and getting your hands dirty. Good for you! However, that is not the only way to garden. We have prepared some good tips and ideas that will help you practice your green thumb, even if your knees are feeling wobbly some days!
RAISED BEDS Middle-aged backs easily get stiff and sore if they’re not given the proper care. Waist-high raised beds are one way to eliminate bending altogether. With tall raised beds, seeding, weeding and harvesting are a snap. But beds that are only 1’ or 2’ off the ground can make gardening easier on the back, too. 28
THE BINGO NUGGET // APRIL 2020
KNEELER STOOL
VERTICAL GARDENING
A kneeler stool has a thick foam pad that’s comfortable on the knee joints. And it has hand grips that make it easier to get up from a kneeling position, since you can use your arm strength to help you stand. Once you’re up, flip the kneeler over and it becomes a comfortable stool to sit on while tending your plants.
Cucumbers, squash, melons, beans and many other vegetables grow well when trellised. Patrolling the garden for bugs, spraying and harvesting are all easier when everything is within close reach.
GET PROPER EQUIPMENT
Ergonomic pruners, which are specifically designed to be easy on the hands, often have comfortable handles and gears that make cutting easier. Some handles actually rotate as you cut, which reduces the strain placed on your hand muscles. Make sure you get pruners that are the right size for you. Test for length by holding a closed pruner in your hand. The handle should stick out about a half-inch below your little finger. Test the width by placing them in your hand with the pruners open. With one handle in the crook of your thumb and your hand comfortably extended, your little finger should extend about a 1/4” beyond the other handle. If you can’t reach the handle with your fingertip, your hand won’t be able to rest properly between cuts. Even with good tools and equipment, it’s important to take breaks every now and then and to rotate tasks. Alternate pruning with raking every 15 minutes or half-hour, or alternate hoeing with hand-weeding so you’re working different sets of muscles. If you do grow some plants or flowers while you are at home and missing your bingo friends, consider sharing them with us. We would love to see what you’re up to! APRIL 2020 \\ THE BINGO NUGGET
