DIRECTOR’S DESK Playing Bingo: Helping Those Around Your Community After the December 26, 2015, tornados damaged the Texas cities of Rowlett, Red Oak, Garland, Glenn Heights and Dallas, Texas charitable bingo organizations opened their hearts to help the Texas tornado victims. Through the efforts of several bingo organizations, 300 tornado-relief care packages and two truckloads of school supplies were assembled and delivered to the devastated areas in an effort to provide some comfort and relief. Charitable bingo also helped support the Duncanville Police Departments Santa Cop Program with toys, food and physical support by sponsoring the Golden Bingo Family Annual Toy Giveaway in San Antonio, Texas. The charitable bingo games conducted by Texas Licensees offer bingo players a fun activity in a social setting while raising funds for charitable distribution to local charities and community organizations. SUN SAFETY Now that we have reached the peak of summer, we know this is the prime time for many families to enjoy time in the sun and in the water. And we would like to share some important sun safety tips to keep in mind while you’re having fun, whether it’s at a water park, beach, or pool. Surprisingly, not many families know the common misconceptions associated with sunscreen and sun protection. Even with the best intentions with sunscreen, these common mistakes can take a costly toll on the health of your skin over time.

MISCONCEPTION: WATERPROOF SUNSCREEN LASTS WHEN SWIMMING

MISCONCEPTION: THE HIGHEST SPF IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE

There’s no such thing as waterproof sunscreen! In 2011, the FDA ruled that sunscreen companies were not allowed to label products as “waterproof” or “sweatproof” because the claims exaggerated products’ effectiveness. Instead, sunscreens claim to be “water resistant” for either 40 or 80 minutes. After that time, swimmers will need to reapply. As a rule of thumb, experts recommend that swimmers reapply sunscreen every two hours or after every swim session.

SPF refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block out ultraviolet B rays (UVB), which causes sunburns, but not UVA rays. Both UVB and UVA rays contribute to the risk of skin cancer. The SPF rating is a measure of the time it would take you to sunburn if you were not using sunscreen as opposed to the time it would take with sunscreen on. A common misconception that many people make is that they assume SPF 30 is twice as strong as a SPF 15. That’s not necessarily true. According to experts, SPF 15 blocks out 94% or UVB rays, and SPF 30 blocks out 97% or UVB rays, and SPF 45 blocks out 98% of UVB rays. While anything above SPF 45 will protect a percentage or two more, none will offer 100% protection. Experts recommend using an SPF of at least 30 that offers broad spectrum or full spectrum coverage (which protects against both UVA and UVB rays). With the right amount of application and reapplication, you should be well protected.

MISCONCEPTION: ONE DAB OF SUNSCREEN IS ENOUGH

MISCONCEPTION: SUNSCREEN IS ONLY FOR SUNNY DAYS Never underestimate the power of UV rays on a cloudy day. Just because there is an overcast does not mean that the sun’s rays are not out doing damage. UV light is invisible – you can’t smell it, taste it, hear it, or see it. UV light also scatters, penetrates through haze, fog, glass, and reflects off bodies of water, white sand, and snow/ice causing sunburn. When heading out to pool, remember to apply sunscreen regularly or wear protective clothing even when it’s cloudy, especially between the sun’s most intense hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

When it comes to sunscreen, less is not more! Most of us do not use enough sunscreen to offer us the full benefits. On average, using 1 ounce of sunscreen (2 tablespoons) or enough to cover the entire body evenly is good practice. When in doubt, slather on more. There’s no such thing as too much sunscreen or too much protection.

MISCONCEPTION: SUNSCREEN PROVIDES TOTAL PROTECTION Sunscreen, even with the highest SPF available, does not protect the skin 100% so it shouldn’t be left as the only source of protection against the sun. Hats, sunglasses, protective clothing and avoiding the most intense hours of the sun are additional ways of preventing sunburn and long-term skin damage. HEALTHY RECIPES Berry-Lime Liquado Are the berries in your fridge looking sad? Buzz them up in the blender for a refreshing Mexican-style agua fresca.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups blueberries

2 tablespoons agave nectar or sugar

1 cup ice

Garnish: fresh mint

1 1/2 cups strawberries

1 cup water 2 tablespoons lime juice

Directions PurĂŠe strawberries and blueberries in a blender. Place in a fine mesh sieve over a bowl, and strain juice into bowl; discard seeds and pulp. Rinse blender, pour in juice and blend with 1 cup ice, 1 cup water, lime juice, and agave nectar or sugar. Serve over ice, and garnish with mint.

CROCKPOT RECIPES Texas Pulled Pork Ingredients

1 tablespoon Worcestershire

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

sauce

1 (4 pound) pork shoulder roast

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 cup barbeque sauce

1 extra large onion, chopped

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

2 large cloves garlic, crushed

1/2 cup chicken broth

1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme

1/4 cup light brown sugar

8 hamburger buns, split

1 tablespoon prepared yellow

2 tablespoons butter, or as

mustard

needed

Directions 1. Pour the vegetable oil into the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the pork roast into the slow cooker; pour in the barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, and chicken broth. Stir in the brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, onion, garlic, and thyme. Cover and cook on High until the roast shreds easily with a fork, 5 to 6 hours. 2. Remove the roast from the slow cooker, and shred the meat using two forks. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker, and stir the meat into the juices. 3. Spread the inside of both halves of hamburger buns with butter. Toast the buns, butter side down, in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown. Spoon pork into the toasted buns.

HEATPROTECTION As summer comes into full swing many of us look forward to enjoying the beautiful weather that Texas summers offer. While warm weather can be enjoyable for many of us, it can be dangerous to some, especially seniors. Each year, nearly 400 Americans die from heat waves. 40% of heat-related deaths occur in seniors. There are a few easy steps one can follow to prevent heat-related tragedy. As our bodies sweat to keep us cool, it’s important to replenish the water we lose, while avoiding alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. Remain inside during the heat of the day and save strenuous activities for early morning or at night, when the temperature is cooler. Wear lightweight clothing and seek air conditioned spaces such as a movie theater or shopping mall. Learning to recognize the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion is also important.

Ingredients 1 medium cucumber, chopped

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1 (8.75 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained

MY LIP TINT PACK BY BERRISOM

Wouldn’t it be ideal if there was a lip color that would last all day without having to reapply? Sure, there are many products on the market with comparable results but they do not have the unique application process as “My Lip Tint by Berrisom” bought on Amazon Prime for $23.50. These lip tints are said to last all day, let’s see if this products lives up to its great review hype. The box was packaged nicely and contained 6 tubes ranging in colors from Virgin Red to Pure Pink. The instructions on the back were a little vague stating to apply tint along lip line, wait 5-10 minutes until dry and peel off. Upon following these instructions I knew something just wasn’t right because the consistency of the tint was so thick hence making it extremely hard to accurately place along the lip line. I decided to read some of the reviews again to try and figure out what I was doing wrong. I came upon a few suggestions that made the application process so much easier!

Step 1: Make sure your lips are not dry before applying or it will result in different color shades on your lips. If they are dry, use some Vaseline or Chap Stick and then pat dry before applying the tint. Step 2: Use a small brush (example: an eyeshadow brush) to accurately apply the tint on your lips. Step 3: Make sure your lips do not touch while you wait 5-10 minutes for tint to dry. *Remember the longer you leave it on, the more pronounce the color will be* Step 4: Once tint is dry, begin to peel off starting at the corners of your lips and then apply a translucent gloss or lip balm to give it a moisturizing effect.

I give this product 3 1/2 out of 5 Bingo Balls! The tint itself only lasted about 4-5 hours, not all day like promised;it just wasn’t convenient to have to reapply in the middle of the day. But all in all this product’s application process was so much fun and peeling it off was the best part!

Zilker Park In 1917 a man by the name of Andrew Jackson Zilker donated the land that we all know as Zilker Park. Before Zilker was a park, Andrew Jackson Zilker used his land and the spring water in the area for his very own business. After donating the land to the city of Austin, and during the great depression, the land was developed into a recreational park. With a lot of Texas history attached to this property, Zilker Metropolitan Park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1997. Zilker Metropolitan Park consists of over 325 acres of plush grass, gardens, and biking trails. Most days, Zilker Park is flooded with people of all kinds playing some kind of sport, picnicking, running, I even noticed a group of young adults playing acoustic guitar’s and singing songs under a shaded tree. Not only do human’s come and enjoy the area, but dog’s are also welcome! Zilker Park is an off leash, and dog friendly park, with plenty room for your furry pet to exercise, and interact with other’s of the same kind.

Some local attractions attached to the area are the Zilker Botanical, and Umlauf Sculpture Garden’s (look out for upcoming reviews), the Barton Springs Pool, and the Zilker Hillside Theater. Yearly events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Zilker Park Kite Festival, and the holiday Trail of Lights also take place on this public land. Zilker Metropolitan Park is a must see place whether exercising is your thing, swimming, hiking, dog walking, being social, or even if you just want to take a step back and view the city from this very famous, and very historic property. Any time of the year, rain or shine, there will always be something exciting going on here, just pick a day, and make it out to Zilker Park.
