What does it mean to be voted the best? It means that the readers of The Fayette County Record thought enough about an individual or a business to not only nominate but then also vote for them as one of their favorites. We ask our readers to come up with the categories. We ask our readers to nominate their favorites in these categories. And finally we ask our readers to vote for their favorites. Each phase of the process is published in five or more issues of the newspaper, and posted on Facebook, giving our readers and social media followers plenty of time to participate. It doesn’t stop there. Over the next few weeks, certificates are designed, personalized, printed and secretly handed out because we want this magaszine to be the inveiling of the winners. Every effort is made to deliver each certificate in person. The winners are genuinely humbled and so happy to find out that they have been chosen by our readers as the very best.

Each time I deliver a framed certificate, I tell the winners, “I know you will be very excited, but please keep it a secret until you see the magazine published in the newspaper” And each time, there are one or two that post a picture of their certificate on Facebook, thinking no one will know. Assuredly, there are many people out there who honor our request. And assuredly those same people send me screenshots of those who don’t. I know it’s just because they are so excited. The Fayette County Record offers an opportunity to say “Thank You” to everyone who voted for the first place recipients. And only first place winners are listed here and invited to advertise.

Back in the first year, we posted the ballot in the newspaper for six issues. Racks were consistently sold out, and while we loved selling lots of newspapers, it was a daunting task counting votes. It took five people, and four computers over a month to tabulate all the votes.

We knew there had to be a better way. We have since adopted online-only voting. We accept only one vote per email address. This is very fair, and is certainly much easier having electronic tabulation. But it has drawbacks in the fact that individuals who do not have an email address (or even the Internet) cannot vote without assistance. Years have passed, and some of these people and businesses continue to demonstrate why they are deserving of this award.

What started in 1994 as a concept by concerned citizens who were picking up stray animals and taking them into their homes, has evolved into an incredible shelter that serves the needs of the animals and those that love them. Director Teresa Brown started as a volunteer coordinator in July 2018, she has been the director at the shelter since January. “Voted best non-profit in Fayette Country is an unbelievable honor,” says Brown. “That the community recognizes all that we are doing to rescue these animals and knowing they are behind us in furthering our cause is just amazing!” The current facility was built in 2000 in large part, thanks to a generous donation from Gardenia E. Janssen. In 2008 the shelter was renamed in her honor. Gardenia E. Janssen animal shelter in La Grange is governed by a six member, active, volunteer Board of Directors. Dr. Rylee Hatfield, a local veterinarian also serves on the board.

The shelter, which is only licensed for cats and dogs, can accommodate 32 dogs and 80 cats/kittens. They keep a list of other pets that people have, or are looking for. They have helped people relocate donkeys and even a pair of lovebirds. The shelter has had five of their fundraisers cancelled this year, due to COVID-19. This makes it extremely difficult when the needs of the animals continue to be their top priority. The shelter relies heavily on volunteers and donations. All food for the animals is donated. Brown says, “We have a dedicated team of volunteers that is present at the shelter almost every day, but we can always use more handson help.” We hear, “I couldn’t work there, I’d take them all home.” Brown says, “We understand that, but life in the shelter might be the only real love and security some of these animals have ever known. When you go home at night and know without a doubt you’ve made a difference in an animal’s life, it’s a wonderful feeling. When you have worked with and walked a dog every day for a

month and the right family comes along and gives that dog a new forever home ….YOU helped make that happen! When you have held and socialized a litter of feral kittens every day for a week and suddenly you open the kennel door and they come to you stretching and meowing and are ready for a new forever home….YOU helped make that happen!” Volunteers are an integral part of their operation. There are 2 levels which people can volunteer to help the shelter. One is by fostering animals. This allows the animal to stay in the volunteer’s home. Examples of when fostering is needed include when an animal may be recovering from a medical procedure, an animal may be awaiting transport or working with the animal to help them become more adoptable. Fostering an animal helps 2 lives: it frees up space at the shelter so that another animal can be accommodated there, and provides a loving temporary home for the animal you are fostering. Brown says, “Fostering animals serves many purposes, however the most important part of that is helping that animal learn to become part of a family.” The shelter carries the expense of food, vet visits and any medications etc. for the foster animal.

The other level of volunteering is to help directly at the shelter location. This can include walking dogs, cuddling kittens or helping to socialize the animals by assisting them in learning to trust and bond with people. Brown says, this aspect is particularly helpful because they can learn so much about the animal from the volunteer. “People come in and want to know if a dog is good with kids, or friendly with other pets, the feedback we get from the volunteers helps us to find the best home for the animal.” They also have volunteers that help with fundraising, administrative task and transporting animals to rescue organizations. Any and all tasks help in saving lives and they are extremely grateful. For those interested in volunteering at any level, there is an extensive application on their website. The shelter takes in, on average 1600 animals a year. Each day they have, on average, 25 dogs and about 40 cats to choose from for those looking to adopt a pet. The adoption fee for both dogs and cats if $75. This includes a voucher for spay or neuter and a rabies vaccination. The vouchers are accepted at any vet clinic in Fayette Country. The adoption fee also includes a microchip. Often kittens and puppies are not age appropriate for spay or neuter procedure at the time of adoption. The total value of the vouchers etc. is approximately $250. It’s important to remember that dogs and cats need vaccinations and basic vet care every year. When you sign the adoption contract with the shelter, you are bound to spay or neuter the animal.

Spay and neuter is the fundamental problem with the over population of stray animals in Fayette County. Brown says, “When you choose not to spay or neuter your pet, you are guaranteeing there will be an unwanted litter, or litters, at some point somewhere.” This year, to date, the shelter has taken in 212 kittens and 81 puppies, all under the ago of 6 months. “We take in dozens of litters of puppies and kittens every year and we’re always going to help these little ones find new forever homes, but it just doesn’t have to happen. Spaying or neutering your animal has many health benefits, the most prevalent being a far less chance of cancers. It reduces dogs roaming and will often eliminate cats spraying.”

They are an “open admissions” shelter, which means they are contractually obligated to take in every stray, abandoned, neglected, injured or feral dog or cat that comes to them in Fayette County. They take in animals from LGPD and Fayette Country Sheriff Department Animal Control Officers. They are also able to quarantine a dog that bites someone. Brown comments, “We have reduced our euthanasia rate dramatically over the past twelve months, however regardless of health or behavior we are obligated to take these animals in and therefore sometimes faced with that difficult decision. We cannot save every single one, for a myriad of reasons, however we work diligently and are committed to save every single one we can.” In May 2019 the shelter began building relationships and working with rescue organizations all over the country, which has been extremely successful in saving lives. Brown says, “Since that time, to date, we have transported over 300 dogs and cats with these partners.” Of the animals they transport to rescue organizations seventy five percent are adopted before they even leave La Grange. Brown says they have also partnered with larger shelter organizations in the regional area. “Sometimes an animal just needs a larger audience and more often than not GJAS animals are adopted within a week of arriving in a new location”. When asked what effect the COVID-19 virus has had on the shelter, Brown said there is no evidence to indicate that this strain of virus is in any way carried by animals. During the time many people were quarantined they required people to make appointments to come in to look at adopting a pet. They were able to successfully continue allowing people to adopt the animals, making it a win-win situation.

The shelter has three full time employees, including Brown and one part time employee. Brown says 80% of her job is administrative and she really misses being hands-on with the animals, however she knows that what she does affects the lives of the animals. Brown says, “I thank God every day for the strength and courage to do this, there is joy, heartbreak, reward and bittersweet every day. It’s difficult to sometimes watch an animal continually be overlooked for adoption and be here a long time, then they get adopted, and it’s bittersweet.” Brown is so grateful for the grit and determination of the volunteers and foster families. “Without the volunteers and foster families, we could never have implemented the change to move in a more positive direction and save the number of lives we have.” Brown retired from Fed Ex in 2013, she wanted to get her canine obedience certification and one of the requirements was to volunteer at her local shelter. She then became their volunteer coordinator and then the director. She has lived in La Grange for 15 years. La Grange is blessed to have Brown and her employees and volunteers display such love and passion for what they do and in how they care for these animals. The Gardenia E. The Texas Heroes Museum was opened less than four years ago in an empty building. But this was no ordinary building. This beautiful Victorian Gothic stone building had been the Fayette County Jail from 1883 to 1985. When the new county jail was opened, the Old Jail was in bad shape. Local citizens collected donations to repair the building, and their names are in stones in the sidewalk. The building was opened again in 1995 as the office for the Chamber of Commerce and the La Grange Visitors Center. When the Visitors Center moved to the newly restored Historic Casino Hall in September, 2016, the building became available to house a museum to honor Texans who have served and sacrificed to win and preserve freedom and liberty. The transformation of the Texas Heroes Museum from an empty building to present has been gradual but steady. The museum is operated entirely with volunteers. Dozens of organizations and individuals contributed artifacts and donations, and several grants made it possible to give the museum a professional appearance. Up to the time the Covid-19 virus struck, over 6,000 people from 48 states and 27 foreign countries had visited the museum. The pandemic closed the museum, but work did not stop. With the building closed, significant improvements were made in displays and signage. The room that was originally the sheriff ’s office has been remodeled to give it the look of the sheriff ’s office. Artifacts and photographs of Texas law enforcement personnel were moved to this room. The storage cabinets that were in the sally port entrance were moved to make space for new displays that focus on the birth of Texas. New display cases were added to the main cellblock to exhibit additional artifacts. The Texas Heroes Museum has three main features. First, it is a historic, beautiful building that includes

portions of one of the original jail cells. Second, it is a tribute to the men and women who sacrificed to create this great state. Third, it is the home of the Bob Lain Memorial Library. Bob was a Texas Hero who lost his legs in Vietnam. His 868 books on military history are the nucleus of an ever-growing reference library. After the pandemic passes, we will return to our normal hours of operation: Fridays and Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM and Sundays from 1 to 4 PM. Admission is free. In the beginning we were a group of strangers who came together to create a nice little antique shop. After a period of time we came to be a group of friends who continue to be a major support system for each other, a group that shares one another’s burdens and encourages each other. There is a feeling of peace when you walk through our doors. We hold our customers dear and try to give them that famous TEXAS WELCOME as they come visit from all over the world. Almost all visitors are in awe of the construction evident in our building itself, which was built in 1855. Its stucco

walls and tinned ceiling provide the perfect backdrop for our wares. “This reminds me of one my Grandma had in her house when I was growing up!” “I remember my parents having one of these at our farm when I was young!” Those are comments you can hear from shoppers as they enter and exit Kat’s Antiques on the square in La Grange. A recurring theme among almost all of our customers is they really enjoy spending time

in our shop and virtually strolling through memory lane. And often, they will find and purchase an item just because it rekindles heartfelt memories. The owner of Kat’s Antiques is Katherine HanslikSvatek. Katherine is a native of Moulton, Texas in Lavaca County. She retired here in La Grange after working 33 years as a chemist for Dow Chemical. For her, there is definitely a kinship and similarity between the creativity of being a lab chemist and creating a fun space full of treasures for folks to enjoy! Both are fed by curiosity and a sense of adventure ending with satisfaction of creating something good for others! Kat’s Evolution Through the years, Katherine has been a participating vendor in several other antique businesses. Locally those included Evelyn’s Antiques in Schulenburg and The Antique Mall, a former antique shop here in La Grange. In the fall of 2015, Katherine saw a “For Rent” sign at 108 North Washington on the square in La Grange. She thought about it for 20 minutes and remembered something her father who was a real estate broker always said, “Location, location, location is so very important”. With those words ringing in her ears she decided to dive in head-first and rent that location on the square to start her own business. With that her first antique shop (Kat’s Korner) was born. At Kat’s Korner she started with 14 vendors and an ever-growing waiting list of others who wanted to join us. Within four months, another location at 213 West Travis became available, and her second shop (Kat’s Too) was opened at that location with 12 vendors. Those two businesses flourished for three years and it was exciting to have two antique shops on the square in La Grange. Then in 2018, Kat downsized to one location, a new

location at 130 North Washington and the current shop, Kat’s Antiques, was born. Kat’s Korner was absolved as that location was absorbed into the dental business next door. Kat’s Too evolved to become the current Judy’s Attic, owned and managed by one of Kat’s original vendors, Judy Tobias. Katherine says, “I have enjoyed antiquing and collecting for as long as I can remember. My father was a collector and my mother an “un-collector.” I remember being in awe of how easily my mother could let go of things, donating and ridding of items. Needless to say, I modeled my father’s behavior more so than my mother’s. I remember vividly my father bringing to me, with excitement, new treasures he had found and purchased as he made his way through the countryside tending to his real estate business. Those of us labeled as “collectors” have several things in common. We love all things “old” whether they be old things, old stories, old music...even old people. There is a comfort that comes from and respect for connecting with things and people that have successfully existed in this world years before us! Come see us.
