WELCOME BACK The 2015 Battle of Flowers® Association Band Festival is proud to return to its roots at Alamo Stadium. Battle of Flowers® Association In 1891 a group of San Antonio women gathered upon the suggestion that a celebration should be staged in April in memory of the fallen heroes at the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto, where Texas gained its independence from Mexico. Based upon a similar pageant seen in Europe in the 1880’s, the ladies organized a mock “battle” with the two sides pelting each other with flowers for the entertainment of the watching crowds. From this event, the Battle of Flowers Parade was born, and with it came the Battle of Flowers Association and the beginnings of the ten-day, city-wide celebration we now call Fiesta. In 2016, The Battle of Flowers Association will celebrate its 125th year of honoring the history and heroes of our great state of Texas.

Band Festival

Alamo Stadium

The Band Festival (formerly known as Battle of the Bands) has been an official Fiesta event since 1935. Its purpose is to encourage interest in the study of the arts by highlighting high school bands in a unique venue of cooperation and friendly competition. The Festival also includes an art contest with the winning entry featured as the cover of the Band Festival program. The Battle of Flowers Association collaborates with dedicated area music professionals to orchestrate this unique musical festival. Serving as the grand finale of the Festival, the massed band production, arranged and conducted by the Band Festival producers, includes thousands of band students and reflects the annual theme of the Band Festival. The Band Festival is one of the oldest and largest music festivals of its kind in the country and is produced entirely by volunteers. This 77th Festival is significant as we celebrate a very special “Homecoming” with the return of the 2015 Band Festival to SAISD’s Alamo Stadium.

Alamo Stadium, constructed by WPA workers in 1940, was built to address the needs of San Antonio’s growing student population during the Depression and post-World War II era. The cost for this community-wide project was $477,000. The Band Festival and Alamo Stadium have enjoyed a long partnership, and with the exception of the past two years while Alamo Stadium was under construction, the Band Festival has been held at Alamo Stadium continuously since the completion of the stadium in 1941. Alamo Stadium has recently undergone a $35 million restoration that returns “The Rockpile” to its former glory as an iconic part of the San Antonio skyline. The Battle of Flowers Association is honored to be a part of celebrating the conservation efforts of SAISD and its constituents by returning this historic Fiesta event to its original location.

DR. KYLE R. GLASER Guest Conductor Associate Director of Bands, Texas State University

Kyle Glaser serves as the Associate Director of Bands at Texas State University. His responsibilities include conducting the Symphonic Winds, overseeing all athletic bands, and teaching various methods classes. He holds a Doctor of Music degree in Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, a Master of Music degree in Conducting from Rutgers University, and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the Pennsylvania State University. He has studied saxophone performance with Daniel Yoder and Otis Murphy. Prior to his appointment at Texas State, Glaser served as the Director of Bands at the East Stroudsburg Area South High School in northeastern Pennsylvania. Under his direction, bands at East Stroudsburg received numerous Superior ratings at PMEA and PBA Concert Band Adjudications, and were chosen in 2002 and 2005 to perform at the Annual PMEA

In-Service State Conference. He has also served as the interim director of the East Stroudsburg University/ Community Concert Band, and was the co-director of the COTA Cats, a regional high school honors jazz ensemble that was founded by jazz legend Phil Woods. Glaser maintains an active schedule as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator, and has also served as a contributing author to the GIA Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series. His professional memberships include the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the National Association for Music Education, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association.
