A Letter to Our Readers
Journalism is a weighty responsibility, especially when it’s so easy to become a perpetrator of (cue dramatic telenovela music) – Fake News!
It happened here.
Yep. Right here, in the hallowed pages of Austin’s only homegrown natural publication, honest-to-The-Universe real Fake News was perpetrated. It’s true. Or, actually, not true, which is what makes it fake. And there’s nothing for it but to start two sentences in a row with conjunctions, and own up to it. Sigh…
Let’s get it over with.
In the enormously entertaining Page 8 intro to the July issue, Bob Seger’s Fire Lake was called “…a great summer song, right up there with Boys of Summer and Lazy Afternoon.” The second song is, in fact, Sunny Afternoon, by The Kinks. Austin All Natural apologizes for the error. The publisher and editor has submitted his resignation, but no one else would accept the job – so it looks like you’re stuck with yet another gratuitous rock and roll lyric… Now I’m sitting here Sipping at my ice cold beer Lazing on a sunny afternoon – Sunny Afternoon, The Kinks (1966)

THE SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT
CREATIVITY by Dr. Joe Vitale
I love creativity! The sudden burst of a creative new idea electrifies me. It’s an orgasmic rush to feel the birth of a new book, or song, or product, or online course.
I love it!
But there are a lot of misconceptions about creativity and being creative. For one, most people sit around and wait for inspiration to wallop them over the head with an idea. And they expect the idea to be fully developed and ready for release to the public. But is that how it actually happens? When I had my private songwriting lesson in the home of rock icon Melissa Etheridge, she advised, “Never write without being inspired.” But how do you get inspired?
She went on to explain how she gets inspired.
She walks in nature, reads biographies, reviews songs and poems, and more. In other words, she invites inspiration. Jack London was more macho about it. He said, “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” Considering he wrote over fifty books, and some (White Fang, The Call of the Wild, Martin Eden) are considered classics of literature, he knew what to do to nail creativity. I’m a fan of inviting creativity, too. I read, listen to music, allow my mind to reflect, sit in the hot tub and look at the stars, meditate and more.
But here’s the thing no one seems to get.
Receiving creativity is one thing – developing what you receive is another. For example, I was reading the new book The Creative Curve by Allan Gannett and began to get the idea of writing this article. My mind was ignited with an idea and I let it float through my mind. But then I went here and started explaining my idea. I started writing. And rewriting. In other words, the sudden inspiration for an idea is a birth, but you have to grow and develop the idea into something that you can share. Melissa Etheridge also told me after I got an idea for a song, I get to develop it with music, melody, and more.
She stressed the word get.
Some people complain that they have an idea for a book or a business, but now have to do the work to bring it into being. You don’t have to do it, you get to do it. It’s a shift in perspective. With this very article, I’ll probably rewrite it fifteen times, or more. Why?
6
He didn’t just receive inspiration and release a song.
He wrote. Rewrote. Wondered. Pondered. Worried. Stressed. And worked some more. The result is considered a masterpiece. But it didn’t arrive in his mind as complete and finished. All he received was the seed. According to Gannett, “McCartney became obsessed. While he worked on it, the people around McCartney became sick of hearing about his ever-changing song in progress.” After twenty months of this process, he created what we all know and love as the famous song Yesterday. Mozart didn’t receive finished music, either.
That’s another fallacy.
He got flashes of ideas, and then worked at the keyboard to grind out what worked and didn’t. I remember reading that the late Leonard Cohen often worked on a single song for ten years. The shocking truth about creativity is that getting an idea is simple birth – you still have to raise it, much like making a baby is a thrilling explosion of delight, but now you have to change the diapers, feed it, raise it, and send it to school. If you really want to be creative, you have to invite inspiration, and then go to work.
Take the seed and grow it.
When Daniel Barrett and I wrote the book The Remembering Process, we wanted to share a new way to invite creative expression and creativity. But after you receive a vision, or an inkling of what to do, you still have to develop it. The creative idea isn’t the end. The creative idea is the beginning. And that’s where you get to be the parent of creativity. For example, when I stated an intention to create the album Sun Will Rise, I had to use everything to receive the ideas for each song. But then I also had to write and rewrite those songs. And then I had to get my Band of Legends together and record those songs. And then we had to tweak and improve those songs in the studio. And then we mixed them, and mastered them. I didn’t just get an idea and quit. This is the shocking truth about creativity.
Let me give you a maybe more startling example. Back in 1997 or so I wrote a little booklet called Spiritual Marketing. I wrote it for my sister. I got the idea that maybe I could help her by explaining a process I had learned that took me from homeless to wealth. The little booklet explained a
five-step formula for attracting wealth. I never promoted it and I kept it secret, only handing it out among friends and people I met and trusted. One of those friends was Bob Proctor, who convinced me this little booklet was a gem. I could have stopped there. A new print-on-demand publisher approached me around 2002 and asked if they could print something of mine. I gave them Spiritual Marketing. But before I did, I rewrote it, expanded it, added more content to it, and developed it into a more mainstream full-length book. That book became an Amazon bestseller and was mentioned in a New York Times article.
And I could have stopped there.
Then, around 2005, a major publisher approached me about publishing Spiritual Marketing. But they didn’t like the title. So I changed the title, rewrote the book, added even more content to it, and released it as The Attractor Factor. It was that very book that got me invited to be in what became the hit movie The Secret. But this evolution of an idea didn’t stop there. The publisher loved the book but wanted to print a newer, expanded, more workbook oriented edition of it. So I again added to the book, enriched it, added quizzes and worksheets, and saw it published in 2008. That book is still a bestseller today. Do you see how this process works? I didn’t receive an idea and stop. I received it, developed it, and kept developing it. What I keep preaching is that life is a co-creation.
It’s a dance of energy.
You receive an idea or inspiration. But it will just sit there unless you take action to breathe it into being. I’m told I’ve written over seventy-five books. I’m told I’ve recorded over fifteen albums. They all began as ideas from being creative, from allowing creativity – but none of them would be available had I take not taken action to create and manifest them.
So, how do you be more creative? How do you practice creativity? By inviting inspiration. And by acting on that inspiration. Now go forth and blossom. You have work you get to do. Go do it. PS: Enjoy!

Because receiving an idea and developing an idea are two different things. For example, according to Gannett’s book, Paul McCartney worked on his famous song Yesterday for almost two years. (!)

FIRE
efore Alice Cooper or heavy metal went mainstream, years before Kiss, there was the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Fifty years ago, August of 1968, his Top 40 single Fire hit Number 1 in the UK. By October, it was Number 2 on US charts, in spite of the fact it had the word hell in it, a big no-no at the time. It also poked a hole in straight, materialistic society – a fun thing to do in 1968. I bring you Fire, Arthur promised – and you’re gonna burn.
Those Were the Days.
That was the title of another Number 1 UK hit in August ‘68, by Mary Hopkins. Only thing keeping it at Number 2 in the US was Hey, Jude by Paul McCartney, who produced it as the first non-Beatles hit on the brand-new Apple label – which had nothing to do with Macs. But we digress… Arthur Brown, a Brit, was known to perform Fire with a burning helmet on his head, often with predictable results, but also had the enormous good judgment to marry an Austin girl and spent some time here in the 1980’s. He had a painting and contracting biz with Jimmy Carl Black of the Mothers of Invention – Brown and Black – and later, apparently, became a holistic counselor of sorts.
But, again…
We digress, a privilege accorded to those who have no obligation to keep anything weird, being as how we made it that way. In May of 1968, French students rioted in the streets, occupied universities, and scorched the landscape of one of the oldest cultures in western civilization. A month later, an assassin again changed the political landscape of our own culture, and by August, we had our very own riots in the streets during a political convention in Chicago, when Hill Country homeboy LBJ tossed his Stetson out of the ring.
8
Burn, baby, burn.
Fire is a cleanser, one that can easily get out of control. In a natural setting, it can burn away old growth and replenish the soil with its ashes. In an unnatural setting, it can wreak havoc. We’re seeing that now, as anger and resentment are being used as political tools, tools of intimidation, through the unprecedented medium of the oxymoronically named social media. How do you fight back? Well, in Chinese medicine, the element of Fire is destroyed by Water, something becoming more scarce hereabouts than we’d like to admit. There’s a saying, though. Fight Fire with – wait, don’t tell me. I know this. Fire, right. Those of us of the metaphysical, spiritual, and holistic persuasion find it easy enough to sit back, content, perhaps complacent, in the knowledge that there’s a lesson to be learned in everything. Sometimes, though, the lesson’s an easy one.
This is really wrong, and I should never, ever let this happen again.
Forces and personalities diametrically opposed to anything resembling spiritualty, empathy, cooperation, fairness, and a natural way of life are strutting their stuff, and those who advocate all those things need to do the same. Get irate, get cocky, catch fire. Your way of life – your life, quite possibly – is under attack. Forget your inner child. Get in touch with your Inner Rooster. The meek may inherit the Earth, it’s been said, but they’ll be too afraid to come get it. It may be okay to be okay with who you are and how you look and ignore what’s happening around you, but it might be instructive to take a peek at the words of Margaret Atwood, political and environmental activist and author of The Handmaid’s Tale. Nothing makes me more nervous than people who say, ‘It can’t happen here.’ Anything can happen anywhere, given the right circumstances.

BASALT Rock of fire, rock of Orisa Aganju by Folade Speaks The one, who well knows to carry out the toil well knows how hard it is to work for earning the bread and to bring home the supply to live I found the question when outdoors I felt totally in abandon I will pray for never losing this structure you are – Aganju, Carlinhos Brown, Bebel Gilberto For years, crooning on summer Saturday afternoons, my house speakers reverberated a mysterious melody – Aganju, a song written and originally performed by Carlinhos Brown, remade a bit more fluid by the Brazilian siren Bebel Gilberto. The hypnotic Portuguese qualities of the chorus had me singing along for years before thinking, Wait – what the hell am I singing? As it turns out, in the Santeria, Lukumi, and Candomble faiths (the Yoruba pantheon), there is an Orisa, a spirit guide, named Aganju, God of the volcano, explosives, and forest. As an energy practitioner, when I work with volcanic rock and witness the metaphysical qualities of Basalt (lava rock), I am melted by the similarities between Basalt and Aganju. This Orisa embodies the essence and power of lava rock. Basalt is formed after volcanic fire has erupted and boiled over to form various paths of lava, hardened and cooled over several months. It’s often found on the ocean floor, which may contribute to the ocean’s emotionally supportive and nurturing qualities. Aganju is exalted as the Orisa who governs paths of the underworld and underground, an antiquitous cave expert who knows maps and paths that lead to freedom. Basalt is one of the primary rocks leading us from situations resulting in inner and outer captivity.
Root, or muladhara, chakra support.
In the Ifa faith, the Orisa Sango is believed the archetype of the root chakra, and although some say Sango and Aganju are the same Orisa, they are not. However, as Orisa of the volcano, Aganju shares Sango’s root chakra archetype and kundalini-activating forces. Basalt is black, often with airy holes distinguishing it from other volcanic rock, like obsidian. When found in spherical form, lava rock has a very healing essence, soothing from the moment it’s held in the palms. There’s a deep Earth connection that lava rock brings forth, assisting in grounding the root chakra to Earth’s crust – which lava rock literally is.
Physical essence of Aganju and Basalt.
Aganju, knowing the underground paths of Gaia, is revered for leading African slaves in Latin America out of oppression and bondage. Following freedom from slavery, Aganju has been worshipped as the iconic Orisa of African

resistance, for this revolution of Afro-Latin culture. Basalt’s physical governing qualities can help when you’re stuck in a state of stagnancy, and in situations not in alignment with your destiny. It’s truly a muladhara chakra assistant, helping return us to the path of our purpose. Altogether, Aganju, lava rock, and other black minerals are generally well known as protectors.
Emotional and psychological essence.
Due to the protection properties of Basalt, when you’re sad and need a sense of stability and courage, it acts as a stabilizer, pulling you up by the bootstraps and energizing you with the fire needed to transform. If it’s a transition in your home environment, a shift with financial needs, or emotional baggage that needs a good clearing, ask Aganju for a piece of his lava rock – but never, ever take it from the navel of Pele. Cheers to the paths that lead to courage. Hope Springs Eternal THE ART OF MICHAEL GARFIELD Austin’s Barton Springs is home to a totally unique salamander that exists nowhere else in the world. I painted this at live events over a period of several months in early 2013, to raise awareness of the valiant efforts by the Save Our Springs Alliance to preserve the habitat of this beautiful creature, and to alert people to the importance of the Edwards Aquifer in general – which is also the source for clean water for millions of people, and is currently endangered by both deregulated development within city limits and secret fracking about forty miles west of Austin. Wherever you live, take care of your environment. Other creatures depend on you. -- Michael Garfield
All that plant growth is there because development happened upstream anyway, washing chemical fertilizers downstream from lawns green as golf courses. Developers, it seems, wait until everyone finishes celebrating a victory, then come at you again and again, like a nasty rash, until they finally wear you down or buy a legislator or governor or two and get what they want. Even worse, once development took off to absurd levels, it was too late to build the infrastructure to support it, resulting in traffic that’s beginning to make California immigrants feel right at home.
Hard to believe, but Austin once vigorously resisted development. No, really. Stop laughing so hard – you’ll hurt yourself, and won’t be able to drive your Lyft to pay for your condo on S. Lamar. In 1992, the Save Our Springs (SOS, as in a distress call) coalition managed to keep global mining and industrial giant Freeport MacMoran from creating new development over the Edwards Aquifer. On its way to Barton Springs from the aquifer, water travels through Texas limestone riddled with the fossils of creatures that lived in the inland sea that covered this area millions of years ago.
Back to that medicine, though.
That’s powerful medicine.
The Native people who once called this neck of the woods home knew that medicine, and venerated the Springs as a sacred place. Folks still do, but you have to be of an age to remember when the Springs were crystal clear and you could see the rocky and sandy bottom, because a layer of lush underwater growth didn’t cover it up.
What’s kept Barton Springs (and, possibly, what remains of Austin’s soul) alive is a little amphibian known as The Barton Springs Salamander, discovered in the Springs not long after the formation of SOS and declared an endangered species awhile later. Salamanders have a long history as magical little creatures. Since some of their kind hang out in rotting logs, they often popped out of fires when their homes became firewood, giving rise to the belief they could live in the flames,, or were maybe even created by them. A salamander also supposedly had something to with inventing Mormonism. We won’t hold that against them, though, since they did help us Save Our Springs. To learn more about the Save Our Springs Alliance and its ongoing work, and to donate to it, visit www.SOSAlliance.org The artwork of Michael Garfield, whose Fighting Rooster is on the cover of this issue, is at www.MichaelGarfield.com Barton Springs Salamander, by Michael Garfield

A FOWL AFFAIR Buck Bacaw speaks out by Skip Looper, Poultry Editor In a growing list of affronts to organic standards, the USDA recently scrapped an upcoming regulation requiring organic poultry to be housed in spaces big enough to move freely, stretch their wings, and have access to fresh air and dirt to scratch in. AAN’s Skip Looper went straight to the chicken’s mouth, securing an interview with noted free-range spokeschicken Buck Bacaw. Austin All Natural: Buck, how’d you come to be a talking chicken? Buck Bacaw: Runs in the family. My granddaddy was a stand-in for Foghorn Leghorn, and I guess the gift of gab just sorta got handed down. My own daddy cussed out Colonel Sanders, made a break for it while the paramedics were working on the old coot, and we’ve been free-range chickens ever since. AAN: What do you think about revoking organic, free-range standards? BB: Burns me up, Skip. Might be time to run for office. I already got a birdbrain. AAN: If birds free-range around outside, can they catch diseases, like bird flu? BB: Shoot, once a bird’s flew, he ain’t free range – he’s in the air! AAN: Uhh... BB: Even turkeys know that, and they’re so dumb they’ll stare up at the rain with their mouths open until they drown. AAN: They really do that? BB: I seen it. Happens a lot around Thanksgiving. AAN: Any other risks for being a free-ranger? BB: Coyotes and hawks, mostly. Seen a hawk take off with a buddy of mine, nothin’ left but a feather. Bird flew, alright. AAN: So, do free-range chickens really have better taste? BB: Dang straight we do! Take a look at these designer shades – couple of bills a pair. AAN: Actually, I meant – do you taste better? BB: Well, now how would I know that, Skip? I look like a dang cannibal? I’ve heard, though, we taste kinda like rattlesnake. AAN: Buck, thanks for your time. We don’t get many interviews with talking chickens. BB: Yeah, and at your rates, you won’t get many more. Talk about workin’ for chicken feed.

OUT IN THE OZONE
A new paradigm in dentistry and medicine
Contributed by Dr. Matthew Carpenter, DDS, NMD ‘Physician, heal thyself.’ That’s pretty good advice for a dentist as well, advice I had to take to heart when I realized years of exposure to mercury in dental school and in a dental practice had contributed to my own chronic illnesses. It was a realization that made me change my entire approach to dentistry, with the mentorship of the late Hal Huggins – the first to have the courage to publicize widely the dangers of mercury amalgam. From there, it was one quantum leap after another in discovering new and innovative approaches to dentistry, and the health of my patients. The biggest leap of all might have been incorporating ozone therapy into my practice, and researching its application to other forms of healing. It’s a therapy that is so revolutionary, so natural, and so elegant in its simplicity that I even thought at one point about changing my practice from dentistry to ozone therapy exclusively, in all its applications. Extensive research is being done into the uses of oxygen and ozone in healing, and some of the best reports have come from my friends and colleagues, Dr. Philip Mollica, and Dr. Robert E. Harris Jr., lead investigators in a national outcome study on the use of oxygen/ozone in dentistry. Here are some excerpts from their studies. by Philip Mollica, MS, DMD, NMD, and Robert E. Harris Jr., DMD What are the two primary nutrients of life? Protein, carbohydrates, vitamin C, essential fatty acids? The list goes on and on, but the answer is simple – oxygen and water. Without these two nutrients, there can be no life as we know it. If we take these two elements and use them in maintaining health, hydration therapy and oxygen/ozone therapy are born. Focusing on integrating oxygen/ozone therapy into dentistry is truly a paradigm shift – the capability for effective, safe, nontoxic therapies that address multi-factor infective states within the oral cavity. A number of therapeutic protocols have been developed to address common dental infections associated with periodontal disease, root canal therapy, and caries.
The history of oxygen/ozone therapy.
Oxygen/ozone therapy has a long history of research and clinical application with humans. German chemist C.D. Schonbein discovered ozone in 1840, and the first medical application was in 1870 when Dr. C. Lender purified blood in test tubes. Medical applications then became widespread
14
throughout Europe and America, and by 1929, more than 114 diseases were listed for treatment with oxygen/ozone therapy. Interestingly, in 1930 German dentist Dr. E.A. Fisch used ozone on a regular basis in his dental practice in Zurich, Switzerland, publishing numerous papers and influencing the work of Dr. Erwin Payr, a renowned surgeon. Payr’s work set the stage for mainstream use of oxygen/ozone therapy in medicine. After more than one hundred-thirty years of use, oxygen/ ozone therapy is currently the standard of care in over twenty countries throughout the world, fully recognized by the U.S. medical community in fourteen states, with recognition pending in three states. Oxygen/ozone therapy was used in the U.S. in 1885, when Dr. Charles Kenworthy, a Florida physician, published his experiences with ozone in the Florida Medical Association Journal. Since ozone use predates the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act, its subsequent revisions, and the FDA, ozone’s medical and dental use is grandfathered in the U.S. and is perfectly legal to use.
What is ozone, and what does it do?
Ozone, O3, is a chemical compound with three atoms of oxygen, the elemental form of oxygen occurring naturally when ultraviolet energy or lightning temporarily recombines oxygen atoms into groups of three. (In clinical settings, an oxygen/ozone generator simulates lightning via an electrical discharge field.) Ozone protects living organisms by surrounding the Earth at altitudes of 50,000 to 100,000 feet, absorbing the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays and allowing survival of plant and animal life. It forms near ground level when ultraviolet light reacts with hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur compounds, producing photochemical smog. Ozone is not the cause of smog, however – it’s a byproduct. A powerful oxidizer, it actually helps clean the atmosphere of these dangerous compounds and is used as a measuring device for smog levels. To reiterate, it’s not smog, but nature’s way of cleaning up smog. The properties of ozone are the foundation of what makes it work so well in dentistry. A powerful oxidizer, it effectively kills bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites at a dramatically lower concentration than chlorine, with none of the toxic side effects. One molecule of ozone is equal to between 3,000 to 10,000 molecules of chlorine, killing pathogenic organisms 3,500 times faster. In medical and dental generators, medical-grade oxygen is converted to ozone in special tubes, with a discharge reaction similar to lightning. The ratio of oxygen to ozone is low, 0.25
parts of ozone to 99.75 parts of oxygen. Evidence-based research has shown this concentration effectively kills bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites.
A continual battle.
Dentistry is in a continual battle with infection of soft and/or hard tissue, coming from bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, or a combination of all the above. In developmental stages of oxygen/ozone therapy in dentistry, the oral-systemic link was taken into consideration, keeping in mind the far-reaching implications of both acute and long-standing chronic infections seen with periodontal disease and some teeth with root canals. The systemic effects of oral infections on other areas of the body are well documented in both medical and dental literature. Attempts to eliminate oral infections have been minimally successful due to the interrelated nature of multiple causative factors – microorganisms, diet, saliva, immune responses. Treatments such as prophylaxis, rinses, fluoride, sealants, restorations, surgical procedures, diet, and lifestyle modification have also altered risk factors. The result is the host adapts to the acute infection, which then converts to a chronic one. These pathogenic organisms, being opportunistic, eventually re-infect afflicted tissue. Instead of treating the whole body with antibiotic, viral, fungal, or parasitic agents, why not treat the infection with a naturally occurring substance that’s truly broad-spectrum, with no toxicity or side effects?
That substance is oxygen and its energized form, ozone.
The commonality of all pathogenic organisms is the weak antioxidant and enzyme systems in their cell membranes. Ozone punches a hole in that membrane, resulting in its death and exposing the contents of the pathogen to the internal environment, allowing the immunologic system to start its physiologic cascade. One of the most amazing bio-chemical and physiological studies recently showed how antibodies actually produce ozone to kill invading microorganisms – so in reality, we’re doing nature’s work within dental standards of care. Setting therapeutic goals based on sound evidencebased science, inclusive and not exclusive of standard care, is critical. In oxygen/ozone therapy in dentistry, those goals are eliminating pathogens, restoring proper oxygen metabolism, inducing a friendly environment of increased circulation and immune activation, and stimulating the antioxidant system. Periodontal disease is defined by the American Academy of Periodontology as chronic bacterial infection that affects the
gum and bone supporting the teeth. This infection, however, can also be viral, fungal, and parasitic. The commonality of all pathogenic organisms is the weak antioxidant and enzyme systems in their cell membranes. Ozone punches a hole in the membrane of the organism, resulting in its death and exposing the contents of the pathogen to the internal environment, allowing the immunologic system to start its physiologic cascade. One of the most amazing bio-chemical and physiological studies conducted recently showed how antibodies actually produce ozone to kill invading microorganisms. So in reality, we’re doing nature’s work – inclusive, not exclusive, of dental standards of care.
How treatment works.
There are three basic forms of oxygen/ozone therapy, used singly or in combination for dental disease. Ozonated water and olive oil (which have the capacity to entrap and release oxygen/ozone, ideal delivery systems) and oxygen/ozone gas. For a patient with generalized, moderate periodontitis, one possible protocol for oxygen/ozone therapy, out of many, involves irrigating pockets with ozonated water, reducing and eliminating pathogenic loads. (Austin’s Transcend Dental Health, in fact, uses ozonated rinse water prior to all cleaning or surgical procedures.) Mechanical removal of debris can then be more safely performed, lessening the infection burdening the body. For stubborn areas, oxygen/ozone can be injected directly into the area. The rocket fuel for all these procedures is the mixture of oxygen/ozone gas. Similar treatment protocols can be paradigm-shifters for both root canals, some of which are in a state of chronic state of infection, and treatment of dental caries – cavities caused by bacteria. (Studies have shown reversal of caries with exposure to oxygen/ozone in as little as ten seconds.) The methods applied are safe, with no toxicity or side effects. If we use pharmaceuticals to resolve multi-type pathogenic microbe infections, it would include many different agents – with known side effects. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health is an Integrative Biologic Dentist and Board Certified Naturopathic Physician, offering ozone therapy, natural oral care products incorporating essential oils, drill-free air abrasion, non-surgical gum disease treatment, safe mercury and root canal removal, and natural heavy metal elimination. by Lane Sebring, MD
But Doctor, My labs can’t be normal
The forty-three-year-old woman headed to the doctor with great confidence – she had figured out what was wrong with her. She was tired. Not just at the end of the day, but all day long. She had a hard time starting her day and, strangely, had a hard time shutting it off. She had put on weight around her middle, even though she had been exercising more and trying to eat less. Stress seemed to be getting to her more these days. She’d done her homework, and found that all her symptoms were explainable with one simple answer. She had hypothyroidism. She knew her thyroid gland was underactive, and her answer was simply to supply her body with more thyroid hormone in the form of a pill. But she was to be disappointed by her doctor, who reviewed her lab work and told her, “Your thyroid labs are completely normal. You don’t have hypothyroidism – you might be depressed.” How could that possibly be? All of her symptoms fit so perfectly – but her doctor seemed so certain her thyroid was fine.
Where your doctor’s mind stops.
This poor woman isn’t alone. It’s true there are more causes than hypothyroidism that can cause her symptoms – but what’s more likely is she’s correct. She does have hypothyroidism, and insufficient evaluation of her thyroid by her doctor is the problem. One of the major underlying problems with modern medicine is that four years of medical school is simply not enough time to learn what needs to be learned, even though students may be taking over fifty hours per semester, or working over a hundred-twenty hours a week in the hospital. Students are happy to learn ninety-five percent of all thyroid problems can be identified by two labs – a TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), and a Free T4. Doctors tend to forget the five percent who, unfortunately, have their diagnosis missed. In reality, TSH and Free T4 more likely identify only about seventy percent of people low on thyroid. Here’s why. The active form of thyroid is T3, and the most accurate measure of it is a Free T3. At the risk of being complicated (sorry, but that’s the way it is – and that’s part of the problem), there’s also a form of thyroid called reverse T3. Reverse T3 blocks thyroid receptors permanently. Reverse T3 is also ninety-nine percent intracellular. This is complicating for a doctor. How do you measure intracellular levels?
The answer is, you don’t.
This is where the doctor’s mind stops, and where patient’s problems begin. The range doctors are given for a normal TSH is between 0.3 and 5.5. This is ridiculous – almost nothing in the body has this kind of range and is normal.
16
This range was obtained many years ago, after looking at two hundred people presumed to have normal thyroid. It’s stuck ever since, even though the American Academy of Endocrinology suggests that any person with a TSH lower than 1.0 or greater than 2.0 is abnormal. A safe and simple answer here would be a trial of low-dose natural thyroid, to see if symptoms improve.
Adrenal fatigue.
Another lab almost never checked by doctors – and yet probably the most common problem in America – is an abnormal cortisol level. The symptoms of low cortisol are very similar to low thyroid, but typically include craving carbohydrates, especially in the evening. Doctors are taught that there are simply two diseases of the adrenal glands that make cortisol. One, where the adrenal glands make too much cortisol, is called Cushing’s disease, and one where the adrenal glands make no cortisol is called Addison’s disease. The adrenal gland is actually little different from the thyroid gland, however, and it can produce cortisol, but at a decreased level from what the body really needs. Alternative medicine recognizes this problem – and calls it adrenal fatigue. The real problem here is that: Doctors very rarely even look at cortisol. To complicate matters, cortisol levels, when taken in the morning, are considered normal anywhere between 3.0 and 25. Cortisol levels taken anytime after noon are considered normal if they fall between 2.0 and 13. The reality, though, is that cortisol has a normal twentyfour hour biorhythm. It should be around 20 when you wake up, it should be around 11 by noon, and it should be around 9.0 or 10 when you go to bed. Melatonin lowers cortisol to about 5.0 after you go to sleep, and it rises up to about 20 again in the early morning.

May I offer you an antidepressant?
If a patient’s pattern isn’t close to this, they’ll have symptoms – yet their laboratory values are very likely to be read as normal. (Care for an antidepressant?) These two laboratory examinations are among many that are either not considered when evaluating patients, or are evaluated wrongly. Testosterone, DHEA, progesterone, estradiol, growth hormone, and insulin are some of the many other hormones that are seldom tested, poorly interpreted, and inappropriately addressed by modern medicine’s simplified, cookbook approach. Unfortunately, the only loser in this system is the patient. If you have a problem you feel is not being addressed, do your homework – and don’t give up. There is more to be had. The Truthsayer’s Medicine Living a life where your value depends upon fighting on the front lines is lonely and exhausting – and, more often than not, fosters burnout and disillusionment.
The Truthsayer’s blindspot is their unresolved wounding.
by Christina Allen There are people born with the difficult gift, or medicine, of being a Truthsayer. They see through the muck, masquerades, and posturing to the very heart of things. For better or worse, they see us at the level of the soul. They see our strengths, our weaknesses, and they see how we cover them up to get what we want. While this gift is instrumental to a healer, it is difficult medicine to have. Much like mastering the wielding of a massive sword, it takes considerable skill to use the Truthsayer’s medicine with grace.
To see is a gift.
What one does with that information is the journey. An inexperienced Truthsayer will just blurt things out, without realizing the consequences of their actions. Their words can cause discomfort, casting ripples across the pond that come back around. Their sudden flashes of insight can be quite unnerving, even calling forth unexpected defensive responses from those caught feeling exposed. People balk at the implication of being disingenuous, and can quickly distance themselves from the Truthsayer. It’s a long and arduous journey learning how to use a filter, discerning when to speak the truth, and realizing when just knowing is enough. The next level of growth for Truthsayers comes after they understand there will be pushback. Consciously persevering, they turn their gifts into tools of adversity. Their worth becomes defined by pointing out deception and wrongdoing. Welcoming the challenge, they take it on, knowing the consequences, and willing to incur the wrath. They see themselves as great warriors fighting injustice. Their shortcoming, however, is in not seeing the long game.
All people’s truths are tenuous and tempered by their perceptions. Perceptions are perspectives that come through filters of past experiences. If a person has been abused or betrayed as a child, they will see through the lens of that child’s abuse. Innocent strangers, for example, become potential predators in their minds. Truthsayers are no different. In the non-personal arenas of their lives their truths are solid, so they come to rely on that inner certainty. If their need for safety, however, latches onto that certainty, it can fuel reckless self-righteousness that wreaks havoc in their personal lives. They may see betrayal, for example, where it isn’t and strike out blindly, driving their sword deep into the guts of any perceived betrayer before they see their error. Until they resolve their past wounding, many precious relationships are under threat. Mature Truthsayers sit quietly, mostly, watching the dramas around them unfold. They have their swords wrapped loosely in their sheaths beside them. They know they are there, but realize the edges are sharp and the weight is mighty. Sometimes it is enough to just hold that sword to the sunlight and twist it slightly, letting the glint from its surface do the work. While bad behavior happens, often it is unconscious. There is no need to call it out and ram it down someone’s throat – one simply does not engage it. This leaves it hanging, unopposed, denying it the traction of opposition. With no place to land, it floats in the air for all to see, ultimately revealing itself for what it is.
The sword of the Truthsayer is sharp and its weight onerous.
Using it with grace, and choosing our battles, is the journey. Gifted with this medicine one learns when to speak, and differentiates that from the driving voices of their fears, or inadequacy. It is doing our inner work that restores our value and need for safety, not being right. Use your light, not your might. The art and science of Iridology by Theresa Vo Iridology is a non-invasive science that has the potential to tell us the strengths and weaknesses of our cells. Just like we have reflex points in our feet for every part of our body, we also have reflex points in our irises for all our body parts. The state of your body’s cells is reflected through the nervous system to the brain and optic nerve, which is actually a bundle of over one million nerves, originally a part of the brain in the first months of human development in the womb. When cells and tissues become weakened, changes can be seen in the fibers in the iris, the colored part of the eyeball.
We are so intelligently made.
Nature has provided us with a number of ways to find out information about our health, including through our irises. Iridology does not diagnose disease, but instead analyzes tissue conditions. Some of the things iridology has the potential to detect include: • The presence and location of inflammation. • Drug accumulations. • Inherent strengths, weaknesses, and overall constitution. • Acid levels. • Signs of healing.
The art of interpretation.
As with any natural therapy, interpretation is an art as well as a science. Dark skin ring in the iris, for instance, indicates heavy lymphatic congestion within the skin, and may be seen in someone who most likely has trouble sweating. Red lines in the sclera, the white part of the eyeball, may indicate high levels of acidosis in the body. Chemical deposits may be detected from medication that the body can’t eliminate, irritating tissues it’s located on and causing chronic problems.
Any form of natural therapy can benefit from iridology.
Therapists that would especially benefit from iridology would be regenerative detoxification specialists, especially if an iridology client can be seen over a period of a few months. Based on iridology analysis, recommendations can be given on diet, lifestyle changes, and herbs, along with muscle testing to see which herbs the body wants. Applied kinesiologists might also find iridology analysis helpful, since it has the potential to point out or confirm glandular and organ weaknesses. TANTRA MASSAGE by Lisa Nasrin There are many different schools of thought regarding Tantra and Tantra massage and how they should be practiced, just like so many other spiritual practices. Tantra is frequently misunderstood and is often considered taboo, because people believe tantric practice is only about having great sex. In fact, the Sanskrit word tantra is composed of two words – tan, expansion, and tra, liberation. When trying to understand these two root words, there are many definitions that come to mind – one is that Tantra is the practice of expanding your energetic capacity, and transforming that energy to achieve the liberation of your true, higher self. The practice of Tantra is the art of reconnecting breath, body, and mind so you can live totally, love fully, live a path of internal freedom by being present in the moment at all times, and experience the world with all your senses simultaneously. Like many other spiritual practices, tantric practice includes awareness of communication, meditation, acceptance, and your individual self. Practicing Tantra can gradually reconnect all aspects of your self, and you might feel very real benefits – more energy, greater focus, and greater control of your body and mind. Tantra massage is similar to a regular massage, but with an energetic component. Perhaps the core principle of Tantra is kundalini, a form of vital energy believed to be centered around the base of the spine. Tantric practices are designed to bring this energy up the spine, and throughout the entire body. A Tantra massage is designed to awaken kundalini energy so the body can naturally heal itself – but this healing isn’t always what you might expect. Some people laugh, cry, tremble, and release emotions and feelings they’ve been repressing for years. That release may be necessary to reach down through your energetic systems and cleanse them, so the kundalini energy can arise safely.
Every person’s body has kundalini.
Tantra massage is designed to awaken it, and promote its free-flowing diffusion throughout your body. The Tantra massage practitioner aims to unblock the recipient’s chakras by massaging points on the body that align with certain energy fields. A range of different techniques are used to awaken the kundalini, paired with intense tantric breathing exercises designed to draw the kundalini energy through the whole body. Not every recipient is able to experience the awakened energy on their first session, but treatments are catered to individual physiques and current energy levels. Most recipients say they feel supported, adored, and honored, so they can
release negative emotions like shame and guilt – along with traumas, judgments, and limited belief systems – and sink into their sensuality and wholesomeness. By the end of the session, the intent is to feel relaxed, but also highly energized. Done skillfully, Tantra massage has the potential to bring clarity, compassion, and abundance, create divine connection within and with others, help with emotional, mental, and physical purification, grounding, and healing, and restore happiness, the flow of life, and the freedom to create and achieve dreams and goals. Lisa Nasrin is an alternative healing specialist whose services include Tantra massage, relationship coaching, emotional support trauma release techniques, chakra balancing, energy clearing for home and workplace, distance healing, bringing awareness and consciousness to sensuality and sexuality through Tantra healing, and complementary therapies that may help reduce dependency on medications. CRITTERS FOR YOUR JITTERS What is an Emotional Support Animal?
by Michael Abedin What’s the one of the surest ways to deal with feeling anxious, depressed, or stressed? Okay, the other one, besides a refreshing adult beverage. Here’s a hint. Fill in the blank. Happiness is a warm _____. Okay, the other one, besides gun. (And, for the record, the Beatles were poking fun at you with that song.) Most folks find it hard not to cheer up a bit around a puppy, no mater how old the puppy – or the folks – might be. Others will smile more at a kitty, a mini horse, a bird – just about every critter has someone who appreciates its antics, and its love, enough that they’d like to take it everywhere they go. And this can create some problems.
Is it an ESA, a Service Animal, or a pet?
The definition of an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is tricky, and different from a Service Animal. Service Animals (mostly dogs) are highly trained to assist individuals with specific disabilities by performing tasks they’re unable to do because of their disability – guide someone with impaired (or lack of ) vision, alert someone with impaired hearing to sounds, help someone with mobility problems navigate, bring medications in an emergency, alert someone who’s having a seizure, even call 911 or help veterans through severe PTSD episodes. Service animals are trained to be unobtrusive and focus on their partner, and not be distracted by or threatening towards other animals or humans. Their extensive training makes them expensive, up to $20,000, and federal and state laws require airlines, leasing agencies, and businesses to allow them access with their human partners. Emotional Support Animals can be just about any critter, and enough different varieties have been claimed as such to give Noah a pretty fair start at filling an ark. An ESA is considered an animal that provides therapeutic benefit to someone with a mental or psychiatric disability, such as anxiety, depression, fears, phobias, PTSD, general stress, personality disorders, and general or social anxiety disorders. (Psychiatric service animals are in a different category) Laws about ESA’s can be vague and constantly change. At the moment, Texas law and federal law seem to makes a clear
24
distinction between trained service animals and ESA’s, and doesn’t require businesses to provide access to ESA’s. You can get a letter from a legitimate mental healthcare professional stating your ESA is necessary for your sense of safety, security, or wellbeing, but it’s up to an individual restaurant, airline, or other business as to whether they’ll let you in. One problem is there are no standards of training for ESA’s, meaning they’re more likely to cause problems in a public place. Another is when folks start claiming their pet is an ESA so they can take them anywhere, even bring them on an airplane without buying a pet ticket, since just about anything can be considered an ESA by someone. And there’s your biggest problem of all – human nature. Find something that fills a legitimate need, and someone will take undue advantage. An airline passenger was refused boarding recently with their emotional support peacock, based on what seems like a legitimate concern that it was big and disruptive. (Ever heard one of those things squawk?) Most airlines now require forty-eight hours notice of an ESA, and reserve the right to refuse boarding if they deem an animal to be a potential problem.
Mini-magic.
Holistic therapists have long known the magical healing properties of animals. Miniature horses seem to have come to Earth specifically for that purpose, and miniature anythings have the same gift. The unconditional love of any pet can make you feel better about yourself, but what the little guys lack in size is made up for by heart. If you have a pet that legitimately helps you with a mental health issue, you can get a letter from a licensed mental health therapist to that effect. (Ignore expensive “official” online certification – no such thing.) Just be aware that businesses and other people aren’t required to accommodate your buddy, and be courteous and respectful of their wishes without raising a fuss. That’s a sign of mental health, right there. Background information provided by Emo Support Pups of Austin, specializing in mini-canine social and emotional companionship. (512) 653-0552.

Inside the kitchen, Mom had her iPhone set on speaker while she cleaned up. “It’s time,” the voice said, and the hair on Katie’s neck prickled. “I told you I didn’t want this!” Mom shoved a pan in the dishwasher. “Not for myself, and certainly not for my daughter.” “You only deny your heritage, Ahan. You cannot deny hers.” Grandma Ruby! Katie recognized the familiar term of endearment her grandmother used for her daughter. “But... I thought the cycle ended when Grandma Angie died.” Mom glanced at the wall over the kitchen table. Katie did too. The revered Grandma Angie’s picture hung at the heart of their family photos. Mom never spoke of her, but Katie knew this woman had meant the world to her. “The cycle of time is never-ending. Once the Awchewa begins—” “Katherine!” Mom shouted when she saw Katie standing there. She almost dropped a glass. “Is that my Katie-girl?” Grandma’s voice reverberated excitement from the speaker. “Your momma’s been talking to me about that water-bird that started all this trouble.” “Stupid bird broke my sunglasses.” Katie set Winston down by his food bowl. Grandma didn’t even pause for breath. “I need you to catch a feather from that bird and bring it here to me. Can you do that?” “What? No way!” Katie backed away. Just thinking about the swan had her heart racing. “I’m already having nightmares—” “Nightmares?” Mom’s eyes darkened. She moved closer. “She carries the message,” Grandma said. “What nightmares?” Mom ignored her mother. “That freaking swan chased me over a cliff.” “Like I told you,” Grandma whispered. “Time stopped, and I—” “Time stopped?” Mom just stood there and stared at Katie with those dark brown eyes that said so many things. When Mom looked away, Katie heard the resignation in her voice. “Okay. We’ll do it. If she needs a damned feather, we’ll get her one.” Mom touched Katie’s cheek. “But, Mom. The universe will provide. You’ll see.” Nita Bauer, a Claim Your Life consultant with Theta and Akashic Records certifications, co-facilitates a Life by Design mastermind in San Antonio. www.NitaBauer.com Facebook @nitabauerauthor

Dear Ashtara:
Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, Am I on the right path? My daughter and I moved in with my mother. I’m completing a degree, but at the age of forty-seven. The road to being on my own seems neverending. Ugh. T., 47, Brackettville, TX Dear T., When you were born, you said that you would probably become an architect or lawyer. You have skills. Personally, I think you have done enough hard work and now you could use your artistic ability somehow. At least take a few art classes and do it as a hobby, if it is possible. A lot of us are artistic but do not take it to the fullest. Therefore, we lose the ability. When you are finished, you will be proud. Your angel is Archangel Raphael and your highest Master Teacher is Sandalfon. Dear Ashtara, More than ever, American culture seems like it leads to financial slavery. Things only seem to get more expensive (and poorer quality) while money seems to be worth less and less each year. Hard working Americans, even those with multiple jobs, can’t seem to recover lost ground, much less get ahead. Is there a Divine Solution coming? When? It seems we are barely all hanging on at a crisis point. John S., Austin Dear John, There is the upper level class, poor, and higher than those. We, the Light, foresee usual events in this decade. After that, there are several other monumental things to happen. We must end war. When? Approximately twenty years. Abolish the political system and review the political advisors in office. Grassroots must vote and be numbered. You are forthright in everything you do. You honor your Spiritual Family. Sandalfon, Gabriel, and Ashtar are with you. Dear Ashtara, I’ve been working on old feelings of rejection and not belonging within my family. I am wondering, did I have a different biological father from the man who raised me who I thought was my father? Veronika, 48, Buda, TX

Dear Veronika, Thank you for your honesty. Honesty goes a long way. Therefore, your feelings of not belonging with your family are being healed now. “Ask and ye shall receive in the kingdom.” “Knock and the door will open.” Rejection and superficial people around will melt away because you have asked. As far as your real Dad, the one who raised you was the real Dad. I am just sure of it. Your angel, Melchizedek is around him. He is waiting for you and loves you. Your master teacher from the beginning is our one and only Gabriel. Dear Ashtara, My cousin’s sister Rita had a stroke. What can she do to prevent further strokes? Minesh, 42, Austin, TX Dear Minesh, Strokes are usually the result of a lot of emotional stresses. However, it seems that in Rita’s case, she was usually high strung and that’s about it. What can she do, calm down about it number one for that alone can cause other difficulties resulting in a probable heart attack down the road. First, allow Spirit to flow through her now and be at peace. Eating raw foods for a month will allow her freedom from anxiety about what to do. Juicing with a juicer that extracts the pulp will allow her body to heal quickly. Rita’s angel is Gabriel and yours is Michael. They are both with you. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone). Questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a gifted psychic, profound healer and channel from the Ascended Masters/Archangels.
