august 1 marks the start of the countdown.

School days are no longer a memory of something freshly left behind us, not to be seen or even thought of for a seemingly endless array of days that blend amorphously from morning to noon, to evening to night.

Now the days have meaning. The kitchen calendar is visited frequently with worried glances, as kids mark today’s date and hop their fingers along to the dreaded red-markered square that boldly heralds, “1st Day of School!”

The kids aren’t the only ones getting a little nervous. We parents have a lot of work to do.

First comes the shopping. Every year, the educational product industry is hard at work coming up with gear that goes beyond the pack of number-2 pencils--this is the stuff your kid will be excited to bust out on the first day of school, and we’ve got them all here in our Family School-Gear Finds (page 8).

Let’s face it, though, for most kids, putting their best foot forward on the first day of school has everything to do with the shoes, shirts, and pants they’re wearing. Get in the know for what’s in fashion this school year in our feature, “Fall Fashion Trends to Kick off the School Year” (page 14).

Grocery shopping for school lunches can make or break your daily routine.

We’ve come up with a list of healthy, kid-approved lunches that will simplify the planning process. See “Beat the Lunch Crunch” on page xx for these creative brown-bag suggestions.

Beyond preparing lunches, the morning rush is riddled with booby traps that escalate tensions and make the idea of getting of bed nothing short of dreadful.

Mom experts offer tips on perfecting this drill in our feature, “Manage the Morning Rush” (page 18).

Things get a lot more complicated for the parent who’s having to prepare their child for school at a new campus. There’s so much to consider, from the logistical to the emotional. We’re here to help with our “10 Tips to Ease the Transition to a New School.”

Last, but so, so not least, is an issue that has become extremely relevant in schools today: violence. Learn about one person who is training coaches to teach school athletes about healthy relationships, in hopes their lessons will trickle down and throughout the student body, and help stamp out domestic abuse now and down the road (“I am Houston,” page 32).

We’ve worked to put together a Back to School issue that will be useful and inspiring. So read on, take in, take a deep breath, and go.

“big boy” blues

Q.

My son is very nervous about going to “big boy” school. He has been at a small Montessori school ever since he was 2 1/2, and now we are off to kindergarten. I have tried to make this transition sound fun and painless, but he is whining and complaining of a stomach ache, and we have not even started school yet! What can I do to alleviate his stress levels and make this school year the best ever? untie A: One thing I noticed was your use of “big boy” in mentioning the new school, and that may be part of your problem. Your son may be feeling quite pressured to perform, and add to that a new environment, and I would have a stomach ache too!

Transitioning into kindergarten can be a little bumpy, as change is always hard…especially with the little’s! Ask him why he feels nervous about going, and work towards answering that specific problem. It would benefit him if you could get with the homeroom mom and set up a playdate prior to school starting so that he has a friend or two going into the first day.

At lunchtime, having a buddy will give him something to look forward to and make the first days less scary. Lastly, I always told my children to do their best. I knew that if they felt that

had tried their best, then that was all I could ask of them. Stop saying “big boy” school and just talk about the excitement of making new friends, seeing old ones and learning cool stuff!

He should transition fine after a week or two!

• Car accidents and bike accidents Car accidents, auto-pedestrian accidents, and bike accidents happen more frequently during the summer. It’s important to use age-appropriate car seats.

Always wear seatbelts and helmets, and be sure to look both ways before crossing the street.

Below is some useful information about common summer injuries, as well as a few tips to keep your active young one safe this summer.

Common trauma/injuries seen during the summer: • Drowning Temperatures are on the rise, and many of our kids flock to

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children account for 30 percent of ATV-related deaths and emergency room visits. Children under the age of 16 should not operate an ATV. All riders should wear protective headgear and eyewear. No double buckling!

• Animal-related incidents Never leave your child unsupervised around animals.

Children need to be supervised when around dogs, horses, and other outdoor animals.

• Firework accidents Fireworks are extremely dangerous. Kids should never ignite a firework! They can cause severe burns, blindness and even death. It is best for families to attend professional community fireworks displays rather than using fireworks at home.

When should you take your child to a trauma center?

Your child should be taken to a pediatric trauma center for any accident where multiple body areas are significantly injured.

For example, a bike incident with head trauma and abdominal pain related to bruising from the handlebar.

You should also seek out a pediatric trauma center if your child has been involved in a traumatic head injury and is experiencing increased sleepiness, or any changes in behavior.

Texas Children’s level 1 trauma center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to meet the special needs of injured patients.

Yes, it’s an intimidating challenge for anyone, but we’re here to help you make the choices that will carry you through a confident school year, all based on the hottest trends that are setting the runways ablaze.

etting yourself out the door on time on weekday mornings is tough enough. But with kids to manage too, it’s a recipe for multitasking madness.

Besides getting them up, dressed, showered, groomed and fed, there are lunches and snacks to pack, teacher notes to write, permission slips to sign, backpacks and homework to gather, and socks VKRHV PDWFKHV WR ÀQG In short, there’s way too much to do, which gets compounded the more kids you have. Even if you’re organized, the bestlaid plans can go awry, when, for example, your preschooler has a meltdown or your grade schooler wants to skip breakfast.

The good news? It gets easier as kids get older because they can take on more morning responsibility. The trick is to establish healthy habits and to get into a manageable drill that you can gradually delegate. What’s preventing you from getting everyone out of the house in the morning without going crazy? Here are top tips from mom experts who’ve found solutions to common morning time traps and sanity snatchers.

CREATE A STAGING AREA

Time Trap: Searching for backpacks, mittens, coats, homework, your purse, car keys, your cell phone.

A.M. ADVICE: CREATE A STAGING AREA, a.k.a. “command center,” preferably near the door you exit from the most, for storing key items.

A mud room is logical place, but if you don’t have one, “Make your own version,” says Allison Carter, a certified professional organizer. Carter made her command center near the back door with a bench, baskets, and wall hooks.

On top of the bench go her kids’ backpacks. The hooks are for coats and totes, and the baskets for shoes. Mine is a mud room for outdoor gear and shoes and a butcher 20 . houston family magazine . august 2017

block kitchen cart in the kitchen for backpacks, lunch bags, homework and school permission slips. Yours could be a similar combination or even just the dining room table.

Within your command center, designate a spot for specific items so you and your kids can grab things in an instant. Then train everyone to put things there, as in: This is where your backpack goes when you come home from school. Your command center can also have off-shoots.

GET YOUR CHILD UP EARLIER

Sanity Snatcher: You’re too rushed in the morning to get it all done.

A.M. ADVICE: DO WHAT YOU CAN THE NIGHT BEFORE. “That’s when you have time to think the next day through,” says Jen Singer, author of Stop Second Guessing Yourself—The Toddler Years. The night before, fill out permission slips, locate library books that need to be returned, write any notes to the teacher and have your kids pack their backpacks and take their baths or showers. Check the weather forecast and have your kids set out the next day’s outfits, too.

You can also pack snacks, make your child’s lunch and set the table for breakfast. Also, set the stage for events that don’t happen every day. “My kids have piano lessons on Tuesdays, for example, so it’s their job on Monday night to gather their piano books and put them on the front seat of my car so I don’t have to remember them when I’m flying out of the house on Tuesday morning,” Singer says.

DON’T GO IT ALONE. “Get your kids invested in the process with age-appropriate tasks,” says Mary Robbins, a licensed clinical social worker. Your goal: To train your kids to eventually get themselves ready in the morning without much, if any, help from you. Your preschooler, for example, can pick out her own clothes, especially if you give her choices, and put her shoes and coat away. morning task, add another to the mix. Grade schoolers can also pack their own lunches, snacks, and backpacks. To make sure they keep up the good work, “Reward or praise them for acting so responsibly,” says psychology professor, Linda McKenna Gulyn, Ph.D. DON’T BAIL YOUR KIDS OUT IF THEY FORGET SOMETHING. “We have a rule that once a year you’re allowed to forget your saxophone and I’ll bring it to school.

But after that, you’re on your own,” Singer says. Not bringing forgotten items to school lets kids suffer the consequences and teaches them to remember, she says. Use a white board in the kitchen as a reminder center or encourage your older kids to set reminders on their phone.

Time Trap: Your child sleeps in, which leaves no time for breakfast.

A.M. ADVICE: GET YOUR CHILD UP EARLIER. If your child would rather sleep than eat, wake him up 15 minutes earlier to make time for this important meal.

Studies show that kids who eat breakfast can concentrate more effectively and do better on tests. They also have healthier diets. “Breakfast eaters have a higher fiber, vitamin and mineral intakes and consume less cholesterol and sugar,” says Elizabeth Ward, M.S., R.D., author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Feeding Your Baby and Toddler. Meanwhile, emphasize how important breakfast is and be a role model. “If you’re august 2017 . houston family magazine . 21

MAKE UP FOR IT AT SNACK TIME

not eating breakfast yourself, it’s going to be hard to get your child to value it,” she says.

The ideal breakfast contains protein—meat, beans, eggs, or dairy (protein contributes to satiety), whole grains (for fiber, vitamins, minerals and diseasefighting phytochemicals), and a fruit or vegetable, Ward says.

Think oatmeal topped with almond butter and raisins or fresh berries.

Sanity Snatcher: Your child won’t eat breakfast because she says she’s not hungry.

A.M. ADVICE: MAKE UP FOR IT AT SNACK TIME. “Anything kids eat before noon counts as breakfast,” Ward says. Just make sure the breakfast/snack is nutrient dense. A whole-grain bagel, string cheese, and a Clementine fit the bill (grains, protein, fruit), so does a hard-boiled egg with a small whole-wheat roll and an apple. (Boil eggs the night before.) Sorry, Goldfish crackers and fruit roll-ups don’t make the cut.

GO OFF THE GRID. Some kids just aren’t wowed by traditional breakfast foods like whole-grain cereal, whole-grain Eggos, or eggs.

But, there’s no rule against having leftover pizza with a glass of 100 percent juice or even half of a turkey or tuna sandwich with a glass of non- or low-fat milk. “One of my kids eats homemade chicken soup for breakfast,” says Laura A. Jana, M.D., a mom of three and the author The Toddler Brain.

But keep the general breakfast formula in mind: protein, whole grains, and a fruit or vegetable, so your kids still gets a balanced meal. Talk to them about what a balanced breakfast is so they can eventually replicate it for themselves.

DON’T BE A SWEET SLACKER. If your child will only eat sugary cereal or sticky buns for breakfast, she has been trained to know these treats are coming, says Ward. To make breakfast healthier, start cutting her sugary cereal with Cheerios or another low-sugar, high-fiber option.

and 4 or more grams of fiber and introduce better options, such as instant oatmeal made with skim or low-fat milk instead of water and dried fruit or a sliced banana or an apple. Also, stop buying tempting treats or designate a specific time when your kids can have them. “I buy very few sugary cereals but when I do, it’s served for dessert,” Dr. Jana says.

Time Trap: Your kid is a slow morning mover.

A.M. ADVICE: ESTABLISH A CONSISTENT AND REASONABLE MORNING ROUTINE. “Although they might resist it at first, children thrive on structure,” Dr. Gulyn says.

Make a morning-routine poster for your younger kids and put

it in a common area, such as on your fridge. The poster should outline the order of tasks such as dressing, eating breakfast, putting on shoes and socks and brushing hair and teeth.

USE PICTURES TO CONVEY THE MESSAGE IF YOUR KIDS ARE PRE-READERS. Allow extra time.

If your child still dawdles even with a set routine, move his wake-up by 15 minutes instead of trying to get him to conform to your schedule. Also, make sure he gets to bed early enough so he’s more apt to be up-and-at-‘em in the morning. “Children ages 5 to 12 need 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night,” says Dr. Gulyn. Preschoolers need 11 to 13 hours of shut eye.

Tips to Ease the Transition to a New School

1. KEEP CALM AND DON’T CARRY ON. Don’t over-think or question your decision or situation too much. Take a deep breath and make a list of what you love about your old school and what you don’t like. Write a list of pros and cons for your new school, new city and new situation. Every school has its strengths and weaknesses. Don’t stress about how the building looks, what the ranking of the school is, or whether the school feels familiar or not. Find out who the principal is, who your child’s teacher might be and who the specialists and after-school teachers are.

This will help you find a friend and ally within the school who will connect with you and your children.

2. GET FAMILIAR WITH THE PLACE. If the school is in a new town, head out and explore the neighborhood. If it’s a new school in the same town, take a bike ride over to check it out. Stop in to drop off a form or play in the playground (call the principal to see if it is okay to go inside and say hello). After your visit, hang out at a nearby park or library. You should also look into finding a sports team or club that your child can join— often groups will meet or start training before class starts.

3. PLAN A PLAY DATE WITH CLASSMATES. See if you can arrange a playground meeting with new friends. We recently did this with a family that is about to move to our city. They came down for the day and we met them at the playground.

4. USE ONLINE RESOURCES. Read teacher blog posts, school newsletters and join Facebook, Yahoo or Google groups. If your town has School Choice, try to read up and visit as many schools as possible to get a feel for them.

Make sure to look into how the lottery works, too. Also, don’t overlook the calendar. Find out what day school starts and what school hours are. Don’t assume that the new school has the same schedule as your old school.

5. SEPARATE YOUR FEELINGS FROM YOUR CHILD’S FEELINGS. As parents we have our own childhood memories—both good and bad.

Try to separate your own fears from your child’s so that you don’t add fuel to the fire.

6. BE AN ADVOCATE FOR YOUR STUDENT. Get to know the school’s strengths. If your child has special needs of any kind, don’t hesitate to connect with teachers or specialists that you think will benefit from learning a bit more about your child

before school starts. If your child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or needs special services, find out what is available in the school for your family. If you have concerns about the school, talk to other parents to see if they have similar concerns. You may find that you are worried for nothing or that parents are working together with the school to make changes. This could be a great way to get involved.

7. KEEP OLD BACK-TO-SCHOOL ROUTINES. Sticking with as many familiar routines or rituals as possible will make those first days back less overwhelming.

Play it cool and treat day one like any other first day of school.

After everyone is settled in, celebrate the successful transition.

8. CREATE A “FACEBOOK” OF THEIR VERY OWN. You can usually find a photo of your child’s teacher (or teachers) on the school’s website. Print out the pictures and make a page with teachers’ names, the principal’s name, specialists’ name and a little drawing for your child to look at in their room or in the car.

My son has trouble remembering names, so we even made up sing-song rhymes to go with his teachers’ names.

9. DON’T GO BACK TO VISIT THE OLD SCHOOL RIGHT AWAY. It’s nice to visit old teachers and classmates but give it some time. Let your child feel comfortable and take ownership of their new school first. Once they feel somewhat settled, it’s fine to go back to see old friends.

10. LISTEN. At the end of the school day, listen to your child. But don’t ask too many questions. If they don’t open up easily, try to find quiet moments to sit together and read or play a card game. It’s a great way to see how they are feeling even if they don’t talk about their day. Many teachers are okay with a quick email at the end of the day or week if your child isn’t telling you much about their day. If your child does raise some concerns, ask first if they want you to follow-up with their teacher or leave it be. My daughter was often upset about how her day went but wanted to resolve things herself. Other times, I would email the teacher to point out something that bothered my daughter—in those cases, it was helpful for both of them to be aware of the situation.

sherri kendall: voice of domestic abuse by sara g. stephens

Sherri is a survivor of domestic abuse from her first marriage, 40 years ago. Today she is which this month launches its Coaching Boys into Men program, aimed at teaching student athletes about healthy relationships. Her son is a Victim Advocate at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

As a woman, as a parent, and as someone who works tirelessly to put an end to domestic abuse, she embodies the brilliant power of the human spirit.

FM: What can you share with us about your personal domestic abuse survival story?

SK: I am very fortunate to have survived domestic violence as a young adult in my first marriage, almost losing my life twice to my then husband. I was fortunate, though, to escape the relationship safely, and soon thereafter move far away where I had several years to heal emotionally and regain my sense of safety. I can say that in one way I am grateful for the experience, as it led me to a life path and career that I have found to be incredibly rewarding, helping others to end the domestic violence in their lives.

HFM: You have over 30 years experience in domestic abuse, spending much of that time in specialized work with domestic abusers. As someone passionate about this problem,

why did you choose to direct your focus on the abusers, rather than the victims?

SK: Good question. I began my work with victims of abuse at a fledgling shelter in Castle Rock, Colorado, in 1985, and I found it extremely difficult to “leave my work at the office,” worrying about the welfare of our clients and their children often after having taken a middle-of-the-night crisis call.

Within a year, I had moved to Texas, and was volunteering at a local shelter when they asked me to consider coming on staff to open a “batterers group,” which I’d never heard of. I was very green, but excited about the opportunity to address the issue at its source--the abuser.

I found it rewarding and an important service in providing a more comprehensive approach to ending abuse, because if we don’t hold the abusers

HFM: How did you end up working with AVDA? SK: Once I began working with abusers at a shelter in Brazoria County, I began to read and learn about the PIVOT Program at AVDA--a nationally acclaimed battering intervention program, and it became my goal to someday work for AVDA. I began many years ago as a counseling intern at AVDA and could not be more proud than to serve this amazing organization as its CEO.

HFM: Tell us about AVDA. SK: AVDA is a unique non-profit serving the Greater Houston Area, providing free legal representation and advocacy for victims of domestic abuse, psychoeducational counseling for batterers to end abuse and foster accountability, and community education and prevention for youth and others.

HFM: What frustrates you most about the state of domestic abuse today?

SK: Attitudes that foster abuse continue, and while there are tremendous resources in the Houston area, victims often

don’t know those resources exist or know how to find them. Also, AVDA and its partners have concerns that funding, which supports legal aid or social services, may be in jeopardy. It’s also critical that individuals in the community recognize that it is our responsibility to speak up and to intervene when we suspect abuse is occurring—and to help save lives. As they say, “silence is the voice of complicity.” Also of major concern is that most people are uninformed about the tremendous impact on children of witnessing domestic abuse. Being exposed to domestic abuse actually impacts the brain development of young children and can result in longterm damage, as well as greatly increasing the risk that they will find themselves in abusive relationships as adults.

HFM: This August AVDA will kick off its Coaching Boys into Men (CBIM) program to train coaches how to mentor male student athletes in the prevention of violence. The program is designed to trickle down from the athletes to eventually impact the entire school culture. How and why does this work?

SK: Athletes are often looked at a leaders and “heroes” in their schools. It is simply a part of our culture that they are looked up to--just as professional athletes are--and have a tremendous influence--good or bad. They can be powerful voices for change as allies against abuse. Coaches are some of the most influential people in the lives of our youth. They are a valuable resource in shaping the behaviors and core beliefs of our youth, and as allies in this work, they can have a tremendous impact. Coaches have the eyes and ears of their athletes throughout the school year, and by simply taking a few minutes each week to talk about character, respect and responsibility, they can make a great impact in a young person’s life.

HFM: Where do parents fit into the picture? www.HoustonFamilyMagazine.com

SK: It is seldom that anyone has a greater influence on a child than his or her parent— good or bad. It is important that parents take time to model, discuss, and encourage healthy relationships, and ones in which boys and girls are treated equally and with respect. In the end, moms and dads are the most impactful coaches.

HFM: What advice do you have for people who have experienced violence in a relationship?

SK: Our advice would be to never accept it; to never think that it is your fault; and to never think you deserve it.

Violence is always the choice of the abuser, and everyone deserves to be in a relationship that is respectful and feels safe.

Talk to a counselor, talk to a friend, or consider calling a hotline or AVDA for advice.

HFM: What advice do you have for an abuser?

SK: Abuse is a choice, and the choice to refrain from abuse is a choice as well. Abuse is typically about the need for power and control over another— and believing one has the right to have that control. If you find that you’re hurting others through your words or actions, reach out for help. Battering intervention programs such as AVDA’s can help you identify and stop abusive behaviors, leading you to happier, healthier relationships. Remember: it’s always a choice.

This summer, the MFAH continues its series of grand-scale, immersive exhibitions. Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish brings together two mesmerizing works newly acquired by the Museum. Under the direction of the artist, these light-based and video-based installations transform the vast, central gallery of Cullinan Hall into a cosmic journey through time and space.

Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist (born 1962) has been among contemporary art’s chief innovators since the mid-1980s, working at the forefront of video and digital

imagery. Pixel Forest, created in collaboration with lighting designer Kaori Kuwabara, is among Rist’s newest works, consisting of thousands of hanging LED lights, each controlled by a video signal so that the “forest” is constantly changing. Light sometimes shifts in a staccato rhythm, and sometimes in waves of color. Worry Will Vanish is a corner projection with a lyrical, resonantly textured soundtrack by musician Anders Guggisberg, who has worked with Rist on numerous projects.

Rist’s panoramic sequences chart a dreamlike journey through the

natural landscape, the human body, and the heavens.

This exhibit takes us through time and through the Roman Empire. Featuring original artifacts from the Colosseum never before exhibited outside of Italy, this large international exhibit illustrates the compelling and fascinating world of the gladiators. This exhibit also explores the behind-the-scenes lives of the gladiators and the colossal stage upon which their fate was determined, the Colosseum. Theirs was a world of specialized training, discipline, regulation, and peril, but also of hope of fame, redemption and even wealth and freedom.
