ooking for something different to do around the Lake? The Roanoke-Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department has you covered with its bingo on Thursday nights. The bingo event is a long-standing institution, running 50 weeks out of the year for the past 25 to 30 years. Initially, bingo was held in the bay, but is now held in Vandeveer Hall, also known as the Auxiliary Building. The hall is named for Margaret and Ike Vandeveer, two people instrumental in the founding of XLI ½VI HITEVXQIRX “It’s been going since before my time,” said Sue Richards,
president of the Auxiliary. Even though it’s been around for decades, bingo continues to attract a large number of participants, averaging between 70 and 80 players a night with numbers occasionally spiking during the summer. “I think last week we had 97 players,” Richards said. Participants span all ages, from the minimum age of 8 to adults and seniors, and includes a mixture of regulars and fresh faces. “It’s pretty much the same,” Richards said of the numbers

throughout the years. “We have some people who have been coming 20 years or longer.” Carolyn McNeely is one such regular, along with her group of friends. “We’ve been coming every week for 19 years,” she said. “We’re the oldest ones.” Another regular, Rebecca Smith, exXSPPW XLI FIRI½XW SJ EXXIRHMRK FMRKS “It’s relaxing,” she said. “I get to see the same people showing up every week. It’s rewarding and keeps your mind alert.” It is not uncommon to see the hall SZIV¾S[MRK [MXL TISTPI -R WTMXI SJ XLI games not beginning until 7:30 p.m., lines of eager players form two hours in advance. “Basically our role is fundraising,” Richards said. “We support XLI ½VI HITEVXQIRX ERH XLIMV needs.” In addition to bingo, the Auxiliary also organizes yard sales ERH E QSRI] VEJ¾I XLVSYKLSYX the year. There are more than 30 volunteers who help organize and run the bingo event, rotating on a weekly basis. “I think it works out well,” Richards said. In addition to the standard weekly bingo events, a special Christmas program and customer appreciation day are held in December and June, respectively. The Christmas program boasts a number of door prizes while the customer appreciation night is held “Just to say ‘thanks folks,’” Richards said.
