Weird News

Accused of carrying out three carjackings in a ten-day span, Mr. Damari Wayne found himself in the hot, drivers seat when the final car he attempted to steal was a manual the he couldn’t drive a stick. He got confident in his skills after two of the armed carjackings occurred in a one-hour period in late February. The final armed robbery came when Wayne and a teenage accomplice attempted to rob the manual-vehicle owner. When neither knew how to drive a stick, they allegedly made the car owner tell them how to work the gears while threatening him with a handgun. When the two couldn’t get things in gear, they became frustrated and ran away with the victim’s cellphone that was housed in the middle console. Authorities then used that cellphone to track them to a nearby train station. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/damari-wayne-carjacking-stickshift_us_58bdf053e4b033be1467f2dd

Viva Vegeria 1422 Nogalitos Street San Antonio, Texas Hours 11:00AM - 2:30PM, 4:00PM - 8:30PM

Tucked away on Nogalitos between 35 and 90, you will find a little oasis much different from other taquerias and TexMex restaurants around San Antonio. How so? Being San Antonio’s first vegan and gluten-free restaurant and one that specializes in Tex-Mex cuisine has carved out a niche for chef-owner Fred Anthony Garza who opened the original Vegeria at Broadway and 410 before expanding to the current location on Nogalitos. When interviewed last year Garza stated he always wanted to open up a location on the West Side of San Antonio with the history of Tex-Mex and diet of the Latino community being high in saturated

fat and generally unhealthy. I can promise you this, meat eaters and vegans/vegetarians alike are thrilled with every item on the menu at Viva Vegeria. I may be a bit biased as I’ve been a vegetarian for most of the last decade and this wonderful restaurant has made it easier to enjoy flavors from my abuela but in the vegetarian world. My personal favorite is the aromatic, home good feeling of the mole plate. The handcrafted mole that is slowly cooked is paired with lightly fried cauliflower and homemade corn tortillas with a side of crunchy cabbage and your choice of side. I almost always choose the salad and pozole. Kids always have a choice here with my kids opting for the bean and cheese nachos or the flautas. Chef Garza knows how to make everyone in the family go home with a pansa full of good food and warm hearts.

70% from Rotten Tomatoes Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action retelling of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within.

Critics Consensus: With an enchanting cast, beautifully crafted songs, and a painterly eye for detail, Beauty and the Beast offers a faithful yet fresh retelling that honors its beloved source material. AND EDUCATION 101 Ah, On a humid day in May 2011 sitting in a classroom I received a phone call from my new husband. I could paint the picture that you normally see from a multimillion dollar production where the tunnel vision sets, I only hear key words like “cancer, “tumors, “testicular. I didn’t know how this could be with my young husband. We were just married, had gone for a run the day before when he began experiencing what he felt was a pulled groin. We were about to endure the journey that thousands of families (over 9,000 to be exact) endure every year with the target age of 33.

I owe a lot to my neighbor—a friend and doctor who insisted I get it checked out. By the time I was diagnosed, the cancer had already spread to my lungs and brain, so it is fair to say I was in bad shape.” - Quote from Lance Armstrong, whose non-profit Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) is now a leader in the fight against cancer, knows all too well the impact that cancer of any kind can have on an individual. In 1996, his own aggressive form of testicular cancer metastasized into his lymph nodes, lungs and brain. Armstrong underwent two surgeries, one to remove his cancerous testicle and another to remove two cancerous lesions on his brain. Over a threemonth period, he received four rounds of chemotherapy. For these reasons, he understands that defeating cancer cannot be done alone.

When do I see a doctor? So what exactly should you or your loved one be looking for? Any pain, swelling, lumps, or the sensation of “burning” in your groin or testicle area. If these have occurred for longer than two weeks, go see a doctor immediately. There is no known reason behind testicular cancer. It just happens when an immature sperm cell goes a bit crazy.

Factors that increase your chances • Abnormal testicle development - Really any condition that may cause testicles to develop abnormally may increase your risk.

• Family history - If family members have had testicular cancer, this could increase your risk. • Age - )RU VRPH UHDVRQ WKLV D΍HFWV WHHQV DQG \RXQJHU PHQ EXW LW UHDOO\ FRXOG KDSSHQ DW DQ\ DJH • Race - More common in white men than in black men.

Incredibly Moist and Easy Carrot Cake Recipe This cake is incredibly moist and light. It’s up to you when it comes to the grated carrots. You can hand grate for the finest carrot pieces that sort of melt into the cake batter. A food processor makes quick work of grating carrots, but the pieces will be slightly larger. This is what we do and find it works really well in the cake. A third option is to use pre-grated carrots from the store. They work very well and help with prep time. This cake is very forgiving. You can make this with or without nuts and raisins. We like using both granulated and brown sugar in this — you could just use granulated sugar, though.

DIRECTIONS

PREP: 20mins COOK: 45mins TOTAL: 1hr 5mins Makes 1 double layer cake or 24 cupcakes CAKE INGREDIENTS 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 1/4 cups canola or other vegetable oil 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup lightly packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 large eggs 3 cups grated peeled carrots (5 to 6 medium carrots) 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans 1/2 cup raisins

1 cup refrigerated or frozen egg product, thawed, 1/2 cup granulated sugar or sugar substitute blend 1/2 cup packed brown sugar substitute blend

FROSTING INGREDIENTS 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar 1/3 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans, for topping cake

MAKE BATTER Heat the oven to 350º F. Grease two 9-inch by 2-inch cake pans and line the bottom with parchment paper then grease the top of the paper. Or, grease and flour the bottom and sides of both pans. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt, and the cinnamon until well blended. In a separate bowl, whisk the oil, sugars and vanilla. Whisk in eggs, one at a time, until blended. Switch to a large rubber spatula. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl then add the dry ingredients in 3 parts, stirring gently until they disappear and the batter is smooth. Stir in the carrots, nuts and raisins. BAKE CAKE Divide the batter between the prepared cake pans. Bake until the tops of the cake layers are springy when touched and when a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean; 35 to 45 minutes. Cool cakes in pans for 15 minutes then turn out onto cooling racks, peel off parchment paper and cool completely. TO FINISH In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with a handheld mixer on medium speed until creamy, about 1 minute. Beat in the powdered sugar, a 1/4 cup at a time until fluffy. Pour in cream and beat on medium speed for 1 minute. Chill covered until ready to frost cake. When the cake layers are completely cool, frost the top of one cake layer, place the other cake layer on top. Decoratively swirl the top of the cake with remaining frosting, leaving the sides unfrosted. Scatter nuts on top.

It can be the easiest of things, sitting down and standing back up when you EHJLQ WR IHHO WKH SDLQ DQG VWL΍QHVV RI HYHU\ GD\ DFWLYLWLHV DQG WKH ZHDU DQG WHDU RQ \RXU ERG\ $JH LV RQH RI WKRVH WKLQJV WKDWȇV LQHYLWDEOH \HW FUHHSV XS RQ \RX ZKHQ \RX UHDOO\ ZDQW WR HQMR\ \RXU IDYRULWH DFWLYLWLHV DQG KREELHV Gardening just very well may be one of those activities that has been derailed by your age and safety comes first. When you take some of these proactive measures gardening can be a breeze. 1. Quite possibly the hardest tip – you can’t keep up with what you once did. Don’t try to do everything all in one day. Work for a while and don’t work until exhaustion. Pay close attention when you’re tired.

3. When you do find something wrong fix the items that aren’t safe or could be a hazard. It’s not enough to just notice these things, you have to fix them. Remember that a simple scratch from a branch can lead to infection. A pair goggles or some old sunglasses will protect your eyes from bugs and flying branches.

G 2. Do safety check of your yard. Have a buddy help you out and check for hazards – roots, uneven ground, loose steps, rocks. These little things you may take for granted can be a tripping hazard.

22

THE BINGO NUGGET // APRIL 2017

4. Do carry a cell phone with you for the “just in cases” that could happen. It could save you some uncomfortable waiting time in the event of a fall. 5. If you use a cane, don’t leave it at home Allow it to give yourself the additional support.

6. Don’t even think about stepping on a ladder I shouldn’t have to explain this to you but don’t climb up on chairs or old, turnedover 5-gallon cans. Uneven surfaces are all over your yard and you don’t want to risk the injury for something that is just too high up. 7. Don’t go up/down that slope! This is just a tripping hazard waiting to happen. With the aging comes poorer balance and this spells for a potential broken hip against weeds that you can ask a younger friend can do.

8. Do bring your gardening up to waist level Long gone are the days of bending over to garden. Raised planter beds are just as exciting and do not require you to bend, lift, and dig. A good height for a raised bed – 2 to 3 feet. 9. Do spread your love and knowledge of gardening with the younger population Your knowledge will help them garden better and then you can ask them to help out. You may make some lifetime friends in the long run.

10. Ask for safe gardening gifts We all know someone who struggles to find the right birthday or holiday gift (how many more slippers can we get!). So make it easy for friends: December – prune the fruit trees January – prune the roses March – dig & help plant a family of vegetables November - help with holiday decorating You can even have them write these on note cards and wrap it in a pretty box. It really is a true gift. May this Spring be fruitful for you and your harvest a plenty.

This eyeliner looks like so much fun, and with Easter right around the corner I thought this would be a wonderful, colorful look to share with you. This confetti look can cover your entire eye lid or just be used as a straight line right above your eye liner. Either way, your eyes will definitely be the life of the festivities with this fun spring/summer look. Begin by using an eye shadow primer to cover your entire lid (I use Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion from Ulta $13) Next, pick out the colors you want to use. This look requires a variety of bright liquid liner colors, you can purchase them online from nyxcosmetics.com Vivid Brights for $7 each. Always start with the white and end with the black, after you apply the white dots (make sure to space them out) over your entire lid or in a line above an existing eye liner, you can then begin filling in the empty spots with different colors. The bottom half of the lid should look more clustered together to give the appearance of confetti falling and gathering at the bottom. Finish with the black liner and sparingly place black dots along the lower half of the lid, use the same liner to line your eyes and Viola‌ You’re ready for a
