Nobles, Ladies, Family, and Friends, Next time you have company, serve them a bowl of shelled peanuts. After they have eaten several handfuls, casually mention that you have never enjoyed peanuts but that you DO enjoy sucking the chocolate off of them.” I do hope all of you came out unscathed from April fools’ shenanigans. If you could not attend the communication from Grand Master of Texas, you missed out on a discussion that we hold dear and speak about regularly here at our Shrine. His message was that as brothers, we bond by our obligations. Obligations we are sworn to uphold the duty and letter of brotherly love and to remember that we should ever act as such. In that regard, we should reach out to those Brothers that have ghosted from our roll call for one reason or another. That it is incumbent for us as a Brotherhood to connect with these Brothers and inquire about their absence and as needed to renew, repair, or strengthen the bond for their return. Such is our obligation and undertaking that we as Shriners should be doing. Bring a Brother/ Noble back. As we strive to reopen our lives and move past this pandemic, the items that begin to reappear upon our calendar are as many as they are varied. We see organizational installations by our ladies, parades, unit meetings, and oodles of other social functions. Let us all renew our dedication and spirit and go out and mingle with one another. That is what we do in community service; we support philanthropy with fun. I look forward to us gathering as we once did. Till next time, big love hugs to each if only in allusion to better days ahead.

Noble Robert M Norman II Chief Rabban of Alzafar Shriners

Noble Richard A. “Rick” Reyes, III Assistant Rabban

We are starting to open back up and get back to fun and fellowship. What a March we had full of things to do. We started the Month with the Grand Master of Texas Masons conference and the Alamo Observance. Your Finance and Divan had a meeting, then onto our monthly stated meeting where we made new Shriners!! We had dinner with the Motor Club as they celebrated their ladies. Both our ladies’ organizations the Daughters of the Nile and Ladies of the Shrine held their installation of officers. We ended the month with the Car Club hosting a car show and the Oriental Guide holding the annual Easter party for our children. So, you can see we are getting back to some kind of normalcy.

Alzafar, I can’t believe its already March. We are a third of the way through the year and as many of you have heard, businesses are starting to open back up. What does that mean for us at Alzafar? First, we can now start meeting in person and begin the process of getting back to life as we once knew it. Second, we can get back out in the public and represent our fraternity and philanthropy as we now how. Finally, we can start the process of fundraising since we now know, there will be limited restrictions on where, when and how we reach out to the public.

April is looking as if it will be a lot like March. Refer to the achbar, calendar and website for more information. By the time you read this article it’s a good chance we would have already participated in the Poteet Strawberry festival parade. We have missed you all and are looking forward to seeing everyone here and there as we as an organization get back to it the fun and fellowship we all enjoy. As always do what you feel comfortable with. Lady Tiffany and I look forward to visiting with you all. If you have an idea or a way we can do something better please let us know. We are here to serve you all and want what is best for our organization as a whole.

That being said, we will have a few very important dates coming up to assist with the fundraising efforts at the Shrine. Starting the month of April, we will have meetings for the Gala and the Golf Tournament. If you are a golfer, business owner, or Shriner wanting to help, this is your chance to get out there and start raising the much-needed funds for our hospitals. Times and dates will be distributed soon. As we progress through the summer, the plan is to hold a Boerne collection day in conjunction with Kendall Lodges annual fundraiser and if at all possible, I’d like to see the Laredo collection day come back to light. Beyond those events, we are looking at an additional golf tournament as well as a bike event which is currently in the works and will most likely be in May. Each of these events will take time, knowledge, and resources that many of you have. If you would like to participate and/or help out, please send an email or pull me continued on Page 4

aside at a meeting. We’d love the assistance. As for last years fundraiser. The motorcycle was a successful fundraiser with the following units having earned funds based on their sales. In first place was the AMC who chose to donate their 1st place prize money back to the general fund. In second place was the Golf Unit with $250 in prize money and in third place, we had the Motor Patrol with $100 in prize money. For the units that sold 60 or more tickets, they each earned $100 for their efforts. They are the Golf, Shotgun, Motor Patrol, BBQ, Honor Guard, Clowns, and Brews Brothers units. If you feel as though your unit should be on the list, please let me know and I’ll look back over the tally. Thank you once again for all your efforts in last years fundraiser. We couldn’t have had the successes we did without your efforts. Amanda and I are very thankful for each of you and your ladies and we are looking forward to some serious fun in 2021!

Noble Marco Zuniga High Priest and Prophet Hello Alzafar, wow already April!!! Glad to see we all survived SNOWVID SA 2021….. only in Texas, GO BIG OR GO HOME! Things are finally starting to look up as we begin to make small steps into getting back around into some kind of normalcy. Hopefully we can continue on this positive trend, so let us all be mindful of each others health and well being. During the month of March many restrictions were still in place. Due to those restrictions, we were unable to host the annual Masonic Youth Brunch. Alzafar still came together to represent at the Grand Master Conference, thank you all who were able to attend. Next on the agenda will be ceremonial, any ideas to make this event a fun and memorable one will be greatly appreciated. Date and details to come soon. Lady Lori and I are so honored to serve Alzafar. We are always open to suggestion, and are here to help anyone who need us.

Michael Long Alzafar Oriental Guide 210-387-0025 mikelong.alzafar@gmail.com I want to thank all the volunteers that participated in the Easter Egg wrapping party we held March 21st. You made the event seem less and we got it done early! I also want to thank all the volunteers for Alzafar’s Easter Party on Sunday March 28th! All I can say is WOW. The entire event went off without a hitch. All the kiddos seemed to have a time of their lives. The ones who chose to social distance, and go through the Easter basket drive thru. We hope to see you all at the Halloween Party in October. Lastly a big thank you to the Units and Clubs... you guys/gals came though with the dollars to make this event a success! Since we are on a thin budget, sponsorship money is nil, your funds really helped.

Noble David Olivares Treasurer alzafartreasurer@gmail.com I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter. I pray each and everyone of you have a great Easter and able to enjoy it with you loved ones! How quick is the year going by? We are already in the fourth month of this Shrine year and things are looking up. We have seen an increase in interest in building rentals and we have received some good income from deposits made by those wanting to rent out the building. We are still receiving our monthly Oil and Gas revenue which is keeping money in our coffers! Both of these revenue streams have helped keep us from dipping into our investments. This is great because our investments are still performing well. Your Divan is working hard to come up with other ways to bring in revenue and we will continue to do so to keep our Temple strong! Over the last few months, I have seen a few people at our Finance and Divan meetings. Here is where you can find out more about the Temple finances and things going on in around Your Temple. I once again urge to come and see what is going on in Your Temple. If you are not able to attend, please do not hesitate to ask one of the Divan members or Finance committee members any questions you may have. Thank you for what each of you do for Your Temple. Together we will continue to be STRONG and SUCCESSFUL!

I hope everyone was able to make it to the Poteet Parade on April 10th. It has been a long time since we have participated in a parade. Everyone knows it is not a parade without the Shriners. Alzafar Rocks and so do you.

Here we are in the month of April. Since our city will not put on a Fiesta until later this year, the Alzafar Golf Unit will put one on at the Shrine on April 17th from 6-9. Tickets are available in the Recorders Office and are only $15 each which includes a catered dinner and music to get your feet going. We should all be complementary to Joy Bonebrake, our Group Sales person. Now that we are getting the Covid Virus behind us she already has $500,000 in rentals on the books for this year. If you did not read the article on Joy in the February issue of the Achbar you should go back and read it If you are planning an event please call Joy, and if at all possible, avoid using a Friday and Saturday. We lost of $400,000 in rental income in 2020 so we need every paid rental we can get. Has your Unit or Club stopped growing? When was the last time you submitted an Achbar Article telling people what your Unit is doing. Articles are due on the 10th of each month and can be submitted at alzafarshrineachbar@gmail.com. PP Rick Reyes is our Editor and is very talented putting together our newsletter. David Gibson, our Maintenance Supervisor, is continuing to recover from his lung transplant. Hopefully, this month he will start coming into the office to help us keep this big old building running. We better make sure that David Olivares, our temple Treasurer, has the checkbook ready. Two big expenditures will be coming up. We need a new roof on the main building (1.5

The most famous battle of the Texas Revolution came about in San Antonio at a little mission called the Alamo. On March 6, 1836, one hundred and eighty-seven men under the command of Brother William Barrett Travis were defeated by several thousand Mexican soldiers under Santa Anna. Americans and Texans alike were so enraged by this massacre that the Alamo, like the United States flag and the Statue of Liberty, became another symbol of courage and freedom. On July 4, 1976, the Grand Lodge of Texas placed a bronze marker at the Alamo, honoring the Masons who died there: Honoring These Masons James Bonham James Bowie David Crockett Almaron Dickenson William Barrett Travis And Those Unidentified Masons Who Gave Their Lives in the Battle of the Alamo, March 6, 1836.” Brother Juan Seguin said after the loss, “The spirit of liberty appears to be looking down from it’s elevated throne saying: Behold your Brothers: Crockett, Bowie, Travis. They preferred to die a thousand times rather than submit themselves to the tyrants yoke. Their sacrifices are worthy of inclusion in the pages of history. What a brilliant example for others to follow.” One of the few who survived the massacre at the Alamo was Mrs. Almaron Dickenson (Suzanna) who had been advised by her husband to display his Masonic apron over herself and the child during and after the battle. Santa Anna saw to her needs and even offered to adopt her child. She declined the offer declaring that she would “crawl and work her fingers to the bone to support the baby, but that she would rather see the child starve than given into the hands of the author of so much horror.” M. Boyd Patterson, Jr., (Grand Master-2003), receiving the Texas Flag from the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Grand Master Patterson flew this flag during the Goliad, San Jacinto and the Charter Oak Observances.

If you have something to say, Say it in the Achbar. We need more input from our Shrine members. The Achbar is limited only by Masonic norms and availiable space. We realize its been tough during this unrelenting pandemic but as Masons, we should be making a difference. Are there any leaders out there? How about stepping forward to form a comittee to help Shriners get thier COVID shots? Let’s step up... Page: 10

The Moment of True Commitment

Brews Brothers Sink or Swim The Brews Brothers Polar Plunge, Huge Success! On a cold February day at Camp Alzafar, brotherhood and harmony prevailing, commenced the annual Polar Plunge, sponsored by your very own Brews Brothers. What started several years ago on a whim has matured into a full-blown fundraiser for the Alzafar Transportation Fund, raising a record $4000+ this year! A big thanks to our brave jumpers and everyone who participated, including members of the San Antonio Cerveceros brewing education club who raised nearly $800 on our behalf. Personally, I was able to convince my employer, Radiance Technologies, to contribute as well.

Superheroes were on hand: Flag Jockey & El Jefe de la Lucha Libre! (AKA: The Illustrious One)

Here is a snippet from their Facebook page describing the plunge, Radiance loves how dedicated our employee owners are to giving back to the community. Kenny Cason, a Senior Software Engineer at our San Antonio office, took part in a Polar Plunge as Radiance’s representative for Shriners Hospitals for Children earlier this month. This event supported the Alzafar Hospital Transportation Fund in San Antonio. Reaching across the country and into Canada and Mexico, their mission is to transport children Page: 12

in need to the burn care center in Galveston at no cost to the families. “The Shriners pediatric care teams are led by some of the most innovative doctors in the world, and their compassionate, wraparound care envelops patients in a supportive and loving environment that helps them thrive,” Kenny says.

This was the third annual Polar Plunge and the day was clear and water 46 degrees. “Not as cold as mountain runoff but enough to get your attention!” says Kenny, “I thought about putting my foot in to test the temperature but realized I was going in regardless, so I skipped the test!”

Scrambling to preserve any heat left in our bodies

Next Year let’s try as a unit or a Shriner to: • Plunge Solo • Plunge as a Team • Toss Your Boss • Sponsor • Do a Corporate Challenge • Be Too Chicken to Plunge • Or just Volunteer

So, we retired to the Potentate’s cabin for warmth of friends and family, and libations of malt extraction. Three separate BBQ chefs plied us with their offerings of excellent meats and assorted side dishes, while we all sat around telling tall tales, hopeful of Spring’s early arrival. The next weekend the camp was covered in snow with the temperature in the single digits!

Have no Fear, we won’t let you freeze your _ _ _ off!
