Student overcomes traumatic brain injury By Rosealee Hoffman The Community News
oday, McAnally Intermediate School student Toby McDonald is a healthy, thriving fifth grader, active in his school and community.

But in 2008, he was a patient on the brink at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. “We had gone to a Texas Rangers game and he couldn’t walk, he was paralyzed from the chest down,” said Toby’s mother, Elisha. The family rushed him to the hospital, which eventually diagnosed him with viral encephalitis. Toby became a traumatic brain injury patient. “It’s not common for a child,” said Elisha. “About 50 percent don’t make it. I’ve lost a parent, and had other major life changes, but this is the most terrifying thing I’ve ever faced.” When Toby came home from the hospital after several weeks, he was wheelchair bound and couldn’t walk or crawl anymore. His mother said he had re-learn everything he already knew. “He was already reading a little bit before he got sick. I’d been working with him a great deal,” said Elisha, who is an educator with the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw school district. “So we had to start completely over again.” Elisha took a leave of absence from work and began working with Toby full time. “The doctors and nurses at Cook’s gave me all the resources I needed to help him,” Elisha said. “He’s always been very resilient, but he was frustrated and unsure. tion for us. I can’t thank the people at Cook’s enough for what they’ve done.” Within four or five months, Elisha said, Toby was back to normal behavior. Now, at 11-years-old, he’s a multisport athlete and a standout student at his school. Toby played All-Star basketball this season with Aledo Youth Association and mans third base for an Aledo based select baseball team, where he’s working his way up to playing catcher. And, he also plays football – albeit with a special helmet. “I wanted to just put him in a bubble and keep him safe,” Elisha said. “But as he’s gotten older, we’ve both come a long way.” Toby is also a student leader at McAnally, a position chosen by teachers for students with outstanding character. He’s also involved in SWAP (Students With A Purpose), student council, and Parker County Cowboy Church. Toby’s journey, and his current character, are what led Lana Kennedy, head of Youth Philanthropy at Cook Children’s, to reach out to Toby about being the spokesperson for the Second Star To The Right Loose Change Drive. The drive raised more than $44,000 for programs at Cook’s, like Camp Strong, which Toby attended right after the money was collected. “It’s part of the transitional care unit,” Elisha said. “And it’s completely paid for. All the kids can get together and do activities and celebrate being survivors. It’s a lot of fun.” As for Toby, Elisha said she’s learned as much from him as he did from her during those weeks of recovery. “He’s a very tenderhearted and sweet boy,” Elisha said. “He’s taught us so much about perseverance. He’s a great kid.” 4 May

Colton Bryan, Houston Story, Maveric Dunn, and Marshall Anderson (with leader Ed Bryan in the background) all participated in the retiring of the Town of Annetta’s old United States Flag. Only Boy Scouts and United States Armed Forces have the authority to dispose of the flags.
Boy Scouts practice good citizenship with flag retiring duties By Rosealee Hoffman The Community News
he Boy Scouts of America are known for a number of roles in the community, and the role the organization plays in the lives of young men, but perhaps one of the Scouts’ most sacred duties is one shared only with the United States Military – the proper disposal of the United States Flag.
T
Ed Bryan, who helps lead Troop 1099, brought four members of the troop to Annetta City Hall on a sunny afternoon in April to help the city retire the city’s flag and replace it with a new one. It is a duty that falls squarely in line with the principles of scouting, and is part of the lessons Bryan is helping to 6 May

pass on to the next generation. “One of our big things is citizenship,” Bryan said. “This falls under lessons in citizenship, but also community service and patriotism.” As part of the Boy Scout journey, boys are required to earn 22 merit badges, three of which are in citizenship – one for community, one for nation and one for the world. Learning about proper disposal of the U.S. Flag is part of that education. “We teach proper care and reverence for the United States flag,” Bryan said. “We’ve done several flags ceremonies around the community, and had others bring us their worn out flags for disposal.” In addition to flag retirement, the scouts also handle the presentation of the colors, which they’ve done at Aledo All About Kids
ISD Board of Trustees meetings, and will likely be presenting at Aledo’s First Friday celebration this June. The troop, which has been active for the past seven years, has about 25 boys. Scouts between the ages of 11 and 17 participated in the flag retirement ceremony in Annetta. Members of the Annetta council, local residents and members of the community attended the ceremony, which included the pledge of allegiance and the dedication of the new flag. “They’re good to help the troop connect with the community,” said Cole Johnson, a homeschool student who led the ceremony. “This is an important part of maintaining our citizenship.” The flag will be burned at the troop’s next campout. www.community-news.com

Ninth grade students pay it forward to AdvoCats By Rosealee Hoffman The Community News

The business innovation group, led by Anita Callaway, created a bake sale in April and sold treats to both students and members of the community in front of the campus. “We wanted to do something that would help out,” said Jennifer Ramos, who presented the check to AdvoCats representatives April 22. “We baked cookies and brownies and held a bake sale in front of the flagpole.” Kristin Bryan, who helped accept 8 May

the check as one of the AdvoCats representatives, said the donation is part of the spirit of students in Aledo ISD. “We are very grateful to students like Jennie who invest their time and energy in helping to find a way to contribute to those in need and improve the lives of others,” said Bryan. “On behalf of the Aledo Children’s Advocats, I commend you for your efforts and for your servant’s heart. “My hope is that you will continue to be a leader and inspire others to get involved with existing projects or initiate their own project fundraising ideas, like your Bake Sale, to serve the purpose of making a difference in the community through your significant contributions.” The AdvocCats non-profit organization was formed in 2002 to serve others who are less fortunate in the Aledo All About Kids
area. Money raised through donations and fundraisers is used toward charitable efforts such as: medical expenses, clothing, shoes, school supplies, living expenses, wheelchairs, dental care, school supplies, counseling, etc. to be given to families in need. “The Aledo Children’s Advocats want to encourage young women to take an active role in finding innovative ways to raise charitable funds necessary to help fulfill unmet needs of children and their families in Aledo and around the world,” Bryan said. Ramos said the decision to choose the AdvoCats as the beneficiary came from a desire to help out close to home. “We were thinking about either the AdvoCats or Cook Children’s, and since we go to Aledo, we just thought, why not help out the AdvoCats?” Ramos said. www.community-news.com
