T

he holiday season is a time for celebration and reflection. So in that spirit, it’s a good time to celebrate Austin’s LGBT community and reflect on the Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s pivotal role in it.

The AGLCC is much more than a networking group. Networking is but a small part of our larger vision — to foster and support a fully supportive, diverse and prosperous community.

Here are some of the ways that the AGLCC affects that community:

We help boost economic development in Central Texas, including creating jobs, fostering entrepreneurship, and improving the livelihood of small and large businesses.

We enable LGBTBE certification. Through this program of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, businesses can forge relationships with major corporations, build business prospects and team up with others for contracting opportunities. This certification allows LGBT-owned businesses to differentiate themselves from their competitors.

We participate in Austin’s Multi-Ethnic Chamber Alliance (MECA). Aside from the AGLCC, members are the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce, Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce and Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Members of MECA co-host several events each year including a career expo, industry forums, import/export class.

We produce this magazine. Our quarterly publication lets us promote AGLCC members to a broader audience of local consumers.

Avoid the

Holi-Daze Local Caterers Serve Up Suggestions for Holiday Fare

Your holiday party doesn’t have to be a turkey.

WHEN TO HIRE A CATERER Local chefs suggest hiring a personal chef or catering company if you’re hosting more than a half dozen guests or so.

“It simplifies everything, and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy your guests,” says Austin chef Celeste Gustafson, owner of Celeste’s Natural Kitchen.

“You’ll be less stressed, happier and more engaged.”

Sutton recommends booking a personal chef or caterer for the holidays as soon as you can, as there are only three weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas in 2015. If you can’t squeeze in a party around then, consider throwing a

In some cases, it might be wise to hire a caterer if you’re hosting a food-filled holiday get-together, Austin caterers say. In other cases, the DIY approach could be the right move. Either way, caterers recommend staying calm and doing plenty of preparation.

Whenever you decide to book a personal chef or caterer, make sure you’re upfront about your budget, Sutton says. To cut costs, you might look at serving your own favorite baked goods. “The whole idea is to share with your family and friends,” he says.

As for the party fare, a personal chef or caterer can do advance preparation of a traditional holiday dinner, for instance — complete with turkey and the trimmings — so that you can do the final cooking without planning the menu; shopping for food; chopping, slicing and dicing the food; and cooking the food, according to Gustafson.

Once you’ve chosen a personal chef or caterer, relay information about guests’ food allergies and other special dietary needs, Gustafson says. “With food out of the way, you can focus on yourself and what you need to get ready,” she says.

DIY TIPS If you’re going it alone, keep it simple, says Alfred Engstrand, owner of Alfred’s Catering. Prepare food that you like and that will wow your guests, he says. Above all, make sure you’re in control and don’t appear “wigged out,” he says.

“It’s all about presentation,” Engstrand says. “If you are pulling your hair out and not dressed when the door rings, it will make your guests uncomfortable and tense.”

To help prevent “wigging out” over a DIY party, you can lean on food from local eateries. Engstrand recommends Wholly Cow for grass-fed burgers and cheesesteaks, Thai Fresh for exotic food with local ingredients, The Soup Peddler for quick, healthy meals, or Wheatsville Co-op for prepared foods. If those places don’t appeal to you, let your personal tastes and your guests’ tastes dictate where you pick up on-the-go menu items.

CREATIVE LEFTOVERS Once the party’s over and the guests are gone, what should you do with any leftovers?

Engstrand suggests whipping up turkey salad with your leftover gobbler.

Simply toss the turkey with sweet dried cranberries and a mayonnaise-based dressing.

Gustafson says she makes bone broth from a leftover turkey carcass. “The benefits of bone broth for digestive health, skin, immunity and joints have been getting mainstream attention over the past year,” she says.

Put the turkey bones in a large stockpot filled with cold water and about a cup of an acidic ingredient like wine or apple cider vinegar. That process draws out beneficial elements like collagen, minerals, glucosamine and amino acids. Bring it to a boil, reduce to simmer and cook for about 24 hours. Then strain the broth and eat it then or freeze it for later.

Gustafson says her favorite way to use leftovers is to re-create a full holiday meal.

“However, leftovers can get boring when the gravy runs out, so double, triple or quadruple the amount of gravy you usually make, and enjoy your leftovers for several days after,” she says.

Held on the first Saturday of each month, The Great Outdoors “Fairy Garden expert” teaches attendees how to set up their own minigardens, complete with real plants, tiny furniture and fairy homes. Supposedly, these tiny ecosystems bring luck and fairies to the house.

Although the Ruell’s shop is found online only, production of its bowties, neckties, pocket squares and wedding cards happens right here in Austin. Ruell’s collection is at once dapper and darling, and is sure to brighten up the necks of the cutest queers you know.

For the dapper dressers and dandies: While everything at Ruell’s is handmade in Austin, the shop’s bowtie game is particularly on point. Although we appreciate all the styles and colors, our favorite just might be the Madras Pink Plaid design.

Another Austin-based online shop, EllenKay Designs features a rainbow of LGBT-centric clothing and accessories. The company, established in 2013 by a trans couple, promotes tolerance, equality and acceptance with clothing that begs you to wear it loud and proud.

This South Lamar art gallery, formerly a fixture on West Fifth Street, offers an aweinspiring collection of work from renowned artists such as Picasso and Andy Warhol to local favorites such as Paul Stankiewicz. The gallery, an Austin attraction since 1998, also features artisan jewelry and a big collection of Dr. Seuss paintings, not to mention in-house custom framing.

For the T-shirt collector: This shop has so many uniquely queer T-shirts that it’s hard to choose just one, but we took a strong liking to LGBT Equality Now and Transtastic (depending on the wearer, of course).

For the modern art enthusiast: Forget picking something out. Instead take the gift recipient to the gallery, then let him or her look around and pick out a piece of eyecatching art. Bonus points if you’ve already arranged for custom framing.

CRACKING THE MYSTERY of the Staying Power of The Nutcracker

H

oliday traditions come in all shapes, sizes and outings — Menorahs to Christmas trees, cookies to fruitcake, Charlie Brown to It’s a Wonderful Life. Ever since the San Francisco Ballet put on the first professional U.S. version of The Nutcracker in 1944, the whimsical story, set on Christmas Eve, has been a time-honored tradition in the States.

And that’s certainly the case in Austin.

“The story itself is unique,” says Ballet Austin’s artistic director, Stephen Mills.

“The Nutcracker is the only dance in the history of ballet taken from the perspective of a girl. Clara saves the day; she is the heroine.”

While the unique, female-fronted storyline helps set The Nutcracker apart, its ability to stay relevant over the past 70 years truly defies the odds. Here in Austin, the seasonal ballet — performed and produced by Ballet Austin — is about to embark on its 53rd season. Although each dance season typically features nearly half a dozen stories, The Nutcracker is by far the largest production staged by Ballet Austin, according to Executive Director Cookie Ruiz.

“For the past four years, this performance has been the number one or two for the top percentage of tickets we sell all year,” Ruiz says. “There are very few empty seats.”

With 14 scheduled shows (plus the dress rehearsal, which offers discounted tickets as well as seats open to local nonprofits), The Nutcracker runs three and a half weeks, while Ballet Austin’s other shows typically last three to four days. Once the six school performances are taken into account, about 43,000 people will attend Austin Ballet’s 2015 installment of The Nutcracker.

According to Mills, the original choreography was lost sometime between the ballet’s world premiere in 1892 and its 1940s renaissance. “Every town, every school has a production of The Nutcracker, but they’re all very different,” Mills says.

Mills choreographed Ballet Austin’s current incarnation in 1999 after he inherited a more “Las Vegas-style” take on The Nutcracker. If this seems surprising, it’s not. Mills explains that “Nutcracker” retellings can range from traditional to regional.

“There’s a Texas re-telling and an Art Deco version. One production is set during World War II,” Mills says. “Each revisioning has its creativity on full display.”

Mills’ version is set at the time of the music: Germany in the late 1800s. “It’s a very traditional telling,” Mills says.

Like fruitcakes and eggnog, The Nutcracker has evolved into a family tradition, especially for Christmascelebrating families. Which means that even as kids grow up and start their own families, they continue to observe the same rituals for their children.

“Our performance of The Nutcracker is the longest-running in Texas — 53 years now — because family, people look to come together on the holidays, and this ballet is

The late Ann Richards (former Texas governor), Lance Armstrong (professional cyclist), Kinky Friedman (novelist, singersongwriter, sometimes politician) and Robert Rodriguez (film director) are just a few of the locals who’ve portrayed Mother Ginger.

“It’s uniquely Austin,” says Ruiz, who’s been with Ballet Austin for 19 years. In that time, she’s missed only five or so “Nutcracker” performances. “Everything about it is good, from the beautiful music to the set design. I really enjoy it,” she says.

about family and tradition,” Ruiz says. “But also, the way we define family is very large.

It includes a lot of chosen family. We know people come to see the show with friends and community sometimes because they can’t go home. There are all different kinds of tradition, and we consider ourselves stewards in upholding that tradition.”

Austin’s production in particular evokes its own cultural ties. In line with the “Keep Austin Weird” vibe, Ballet Austin infuses every Nutcracker production with a bit of ATX originality.

“One scene is similar to the nursery rhyme ‘There Was an Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe.’ Mother Ginger is the character,” Ruiz says. “Ever since 1997, we’ve had a different community member appear in the role. Every single performance features a different Austinite [as Mother Ginger].”

Before the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in June 2015, same-sex couples could not take advantage of the same financial strategies available to opposite-sex married couples.

In the LGBT community, the implication of the distinction created significant financial and emotional risks.

Consider, for a moment, my good friends Lisa and Lauren. They are a loving, devoted couple who recently celebrated their third wedding anniversary. They live in a home in South Austin that is owned by Lisa. Lauren has a teenage daughter from a previous heterosexual relationship. The biological father has no involvement with the child; Lisa and Lauren are raising her. Everyone, thankfully, is happy and healthy.

But...what if that changed? What if Lisa is riding her bike and gets hit by a car? She might get badly injured or, worse yet, killed. In Texas, before the Supreme Court ruling, same-sex marriages were not legally recognized. So, if Lisa were hospitalized, Lauren would have to have the presence of mind to bring the health care proxy or durable power of attorney to prove their relationship status; otherwise, they’d find themselves in a bind. If Lisa died without a will, Lauren would have no legal rights to the home. These are just a few of the financial issues that kept them up at night. There were many other parenting issues as well. If something happened to Lauren, Lisa likely wouldn’t have any legal rights or custody of the child.

Since the Supreme Court changed the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples, those inequities no longer exist. Now, same-sex couples have legal rights they previously lacked, and in some instances, they will need to take steps to leverage those rights properly.

Here are issues same-sex married couples should now consider in preparing for the future.

ESTATE PLANNING Under probate law, when one spouse dies, everything automatically passes to the surviving spouse unless otherwise provided in the will. Right now, this applies to same-sex couples in every state. It is important to remember, however, that a family member could contest an inheritance, even if a legal marriage existed. Therefore, a clear declaration in a will is the best way to make sure property is passed as intended.

TAX PLANNING Same-sex married couples now can file joint tax returns, presenting an opportunity for previously unavailable writeoffs and tax deductions. Meet with your accountant or tax preparer to determine whether you could effectively lower your tax liability by filing jointly.

ESTATE TAXES If the entire “deceased spouse unused exemption amount” is not used at the death of the first spouse, the rest can be used by the surviving spouse at his or her death. This is

Retirement. Legally married gay couples now have all the rights as same-sex married couples have with respect to automatic spousal benefits in retirement plans such as pensions, IRAs, 401(k)k and Social Security.

Social Security. All legally married spouses are able to receive spousal retirement and survivor benefits regardless of their location.

Life insurance. Before the Supreme Court ruling, many same-sex couples purchased life insurance to help offset the cost of federal taxes on inherited assets from the property of their spouse who has died. Those liabilities will no longer exist, which frees the proceeds of a life insurance policy for other uses. Now, which life insurance benefits can be used to offset other needs such as replacement of the deceased spouse’s lost earnings, college education for children, or financial security in retirement.

only open to legally married couples, so it now can be used by samesex couples in every state.

CARING FOR LOVED ONES Health insurance carriers now must offer the same coverage to legally married same-sex couples as offered to opposite-sex couples, no matter where the insurance company is or where the couple resides.

Same-sex married couples no longer must maintain health care proxies and durable powers of attorney when they travel throughout the U.S. to prove their relationship status. Now, the presumption will be in all states that a spouse is next of kin.

ESTATE REDUCTION/GIFTING STRATEGIES Spouses can gift an unlimited amount to each other with no tax consequences in both life and after death (unlimited marital transfer). Same-sex married couples now

have this right for both federal and state purposes, which is a significant change.

The recent changes in marital laws have leveled the playing field for couples, but that does not mean there is a onesize-fits-all estate and financial strategy.

We encourage couples to work with a financial professional who knows about the unique circumstances many LGBT couples encounter.

Guerrilla Queer Bar at Cheer Up Charlie’s In honor of the final event of the Austin Outpost of the Guerrilla Queer Bar, The Agenda is printing the message “The Smoking Banana” shared with his followers on his blog just before the last bash on Friday, August 14th at Cheer Up Charlie’s: When I started the Austin Outpost of the Guerrilla Queer Bar on July 25, 2000, I had no idea that we’d embark upon a 15-year journey together. So much has changed in Austin’s gay community over the years. The AIDS crisis was still in full swing. 4th St. seemed like the eastern edge of downtown and most of us confined ourselves to our little ghetto. I’ve had the pleasure of leading so many of you out into the rest of Austin, introducing you to the vibrant bar scene outside of our comfort zone. Together, we explored our wonderful city each month and invaded straight bars 178 times! Our mission was part tour group, part missionary, part diplomacy, and a lot of camaraderie.

But times have changed and our mission is no longer clear. Just last month, the gay rights movement took a huge step forward with marriage rights recognition and we experienced a massive, spontaneous outpouring of public support. And while we now have therapy and PRep for managing HIV, the crisis has shifted from hospice care to lifelong health management. And let’s not forget that just about every form of STD seems to be on the rise! What the next 15 years will bring is anybody’s guess. The idea of a guerrilla gay bar no longer seems relevant, but there is one last thing we can do together. Given how far we’ve come, it seems appropriate that our last happy hour not be held in a “straight” or “gay” bar, but a bar that’s comfortably inclusive and welcoming to everyone.

RIP GQB. You will be missed.

I have been interested in bodybuilding since I was a little girl, making my grandmother buy me Muscular Development magazines in elementary school.

Was it a way to keep fit after leaving the military? I was involved in a near-fatal accident during my stint in the Marines that landed me in a wheelchair for 2.5 months due to a shattered pelvis.

They told me I would never be able to run or work out again. Let’s just say I love a good challenge and don’t like being told what I can and can’t do.

What preparation do you do for a competition? There’s 12 weeks of dieting with cheat meals until two to three weeks out. My morning routine five days a week is 40 minutes of fasted cardio, usually stairs with a weighted vest, and 30 minutes of posing. My afternoon routine is 90 minutes of weight training five to six days a week. Depending where my physique is, I may choose to add additional cardio or workout sessions. Basically, I’m sweating and eating all day. The week of a show is always a mix of torture and excitement. I get myself ready for the stage by getting pampered from head to toe, but all I really want to do is eat doughnuts. At the show, I check in and get spray-tanned. Jess [my wife] takes me to eat a steak and sweet potato, and then we chill in the room with my feet up and sip water until it’s time to get on stage.

Are there any pitfalls to reshaping your physique so drastically? Hell yes, there are pitfalls. It’s called having to buy a new wardrobe three times now. You can have quads or you can wear jeans, but you can’t have both.

What have you learned about yourself by following this path? The whole process of becoming a bodybuilder just reaffirmed my philosophy of always be true to yourself. If you have a dream, go for it! With enough work, patience and drive, anything is possible.

What does your wife think of your decidedly bulked-up physique? She always jokes that she married for “arms, abs and teeth.” Now she just has more to love!
