TAKING PRIDE IN AUSTIN
A
s we’ve all noticed, the Austin area continues to grow and grow and grow. Not long ago, the metro area surpassed the 2 million mark for population. In large part, people are flocking to Silicon Hills to take advantage of the wealth of employment opportunities.
Amid the rapid growth of the Austin area, we must remind new arrivals — and, to a certain extent, those of us who’ve been where awhile — about one of Austin’s key attractions: its welcoming and inclusive attitude. In the midst of the ongoing population explosion, we must not let Austin’s welcoming and inclusive atmosphere be eroded. As we witness the current backlash against the LGBT community — especially our transgender brothers and sisters — following the great strides we’ve made in the past few years, we must be supportive of one another, regardless of whether we are new arrivals or longtime residents, and regardless of whether we are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or straight. This means:

Supporting businesses that support you. Check out the directory in the back of this magazine to see the names of just some of those businesses. Speaking out against injustice of any kind, whether it’s harassment over which bathrooms our transgender brothers and sisters are “allowed” to use or it’s discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, gender, age and so forth. Creating and solidifying a community where we want to live, want to buy a house, want to get married, want to raise children and want to work.
Ultimately, we must preserve what makes Austin great — beyond the community’s warm embrace of LGBT residents — and ensure that people continue to view our region as the progressive place that it has been for decades.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GREAT PUBLIC SPACES? Asakura Robinson Looks at the Big Picture BY PAIGE SCHILT
Twelve stories above Congress Avenue, the offices of urban planning and design firm Asakura Robinson offer a stunning view of the Texas Capitol. From this vantage point, the grassy Capitol grounds reveal a symmetry and logic that you might not grasp at the ground level. It’s a vista that speaks to the firm’s mission: great public spaces built with an eye for the big picture.

Landscape architects Keiji Asakura and Margaret Robinson founded Asakura Robinson in 2004. At the time, both were located in Houston. “We decided to start a firm that would really target doing community-focused work. We had been doing other kinds of work on a national and international level, and we really wanted to focus more locally, where we thought we could make a bigger difference,” Robinson recalls. By 2013, the firm was building a reputation for sustainable planning and development projects. Austin seemed like an obvious place to open the firm’s first satellite office. Zakcq Lockrem, director of planning, agreed to join Robinson in relocating to Austin. “Austin has a good reputation for what we call placemaking,” Lockrem says. “And that’s a big part of what we do. We’re trying to create better places for people by considering a range of factors: design, health, ecology, transportation and affordability.” The firm’s multilayered approach is evident in the plans it has developed for the City of Austin’s South Central Waterfront Initiative. The real estate along Riverside Drive between Blunn Creek and South First Street is on the verge of significant redevelopment. A rendering from Asakura Robinson’s plan reimagines Riverside surrounded by bike lanes, parking, green space and pedestrian walkways. “We’re trying to help the city think about how we direct development in that area so that we’re getting top-of-the-line public spaces, plus green infrastructure and affordable housing,” Lockrem says. Talking with the people who actually use public spaces is essential to this kind of community-focused work. For another Austin project, the renovation of Little Stacey Park, the firm’s planning staff held a series of public meetings to find out what was working and what the neighborhood’s needs were. Some of the things they learned were surprising. “Everybody remembers the turtle.

It’s a neighborhood that’s been experiencing rapid change — and one of many projects where Asakura Robinson must be mindful of how community improvements can affect affordability for longtime residents. Robinson credits newcomer Katie Coyne with helping keep these social justice issues front of mind. As a graduate of the Community and Regional Planning and Sustainable Design programs at the University of Texas, Coyne brings a passion for human rights and a commitment to the LGBT community. Soon after she was hired last fall, Coyne asked about membership in Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC). “This is the most accepting place I’ve ever worked,” Coyne says. “When I asked about joining the AGLCC, they had my back.” Lockrem adds: “I think it’s a great opportunity to be part of our community, and to be connected with the people that we want to design great spaces for.” SU M M ER 2 0 1 6 | A G L C C . through Realtor.com, Zillow, Trulia, Homes.com, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and so forth. All of these help to find the right buyer for the right home. Anything under $300,000 right now is gold. Downtown, the median home price is $627,500, while it’s $434,800 in East Austin, $799,450 in Travis Heights and $1,869,000 in Westlake. In terms of where you might find a home, any area within 10 miles of downtown Austin is hot. Buda/Kyle to the south are seeing tremendous growth, as many are being priced out of Austin proper. Pflugerville and Round Rock to the north are seeing the same action. RICHARD KLINE HOME STAGER, THE STAGING GUY The moment a homeowner decides to put their house on the market, it becomes a product, which makes it extremely important for that product stand out in the marketplace. Savvy Realtors and home sellers will hire a professional stager to enable buyers to envision themselves living in the home; show the full potential of the home and make the home visually appealing for online listings.

The national average for selling a house that has been staged is 27 days, compared with 51 days for a non-staged house. The longer a property sits without a sale, the more it costs the home seller in mortgage payments, insurance, utilities and so on. Also, if a house sits on the market for too long, the price is reduced. Staging is always less than a price reduction. All of our staging is custom to the client and property. Pricing varies not only on size of the property, but also the number of rooms to be staged and the targeted demographic. (e.g., The furnishings used for a house likely to be purchased by an “empty-nester” who is downsizing will be much different than those used for a young family.)
Title companies act as a neutral third party to help close the sale of the contracted real estate and to provide protection to the buyer in the event that an ownership issue arises. We represent the buyer, seller and the lender in making sure that the contract is followed and that all agreements are properly reflected on the settlement statement. Much of what we do happens behind the scenes, so frequently the buyer and seller are unaware of all the burning hoops we leap through. We recently had a gay couple who had used our office to purchase their house come to us in a panic because the IRS had placed a $700,000 lien on their property. The lien was for a prior owner—two owners back—who had not paid estate taxes. Our title-insurance claims attorneys stepped in to defend them and their house from the IRS lien. Title insurance is often thought of as a buyer protection, but in reality it protects both sides of the transaction, since any title issue that hits the buyer means the buyer goes to the title company for resolution and doesn’t sue the seller. eady or not, summer is here. For the next several months, temperatures will dance above the 90-degree mark, some days even landing on the wrong side of 105. Summertime in Central Texas can be ruthless. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the Austin area’s best (and most refreshing) swimming holes. Whether you’re seeking a city escape, an accessible pool or something kid-friendly, the Austin area is overflowing with options.

P O O L S A N D S P R ING S BARTON SPRINGS 2201 Barton Springs Road Barton Springs is an Austin institution and a required check on any local’s bucket list. Centrally located within Zilker Park, this man-made-meets-natural pool covers 3 acres and gets its water from underground springs. With the water temperature between 68 and 70 degrees, swimmers are welcome to take a dip year-round; the cool water feels awfully refreshing when the temp is pushing triple digits. “I love that it’s this slice of gorgeous nature right in the middle of the city,” social media strategist Kristina Puerto says. “There’s nothing like spending a really hot summer day floating on a floaty in that freezing water when every other pool in Austin feels like a bathtub.” Need to know: Open daily (hours change depending on day), entry fee, kid-friendly, not pet-friendly. DEEP EDDY 401 Deep Eddy Ave. Deep Eddy is the city’s oldest pool, and it’s still a favorite spot among locals. On May 21, this pool celebrated her 100th birthday, and she’s officially a historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Deep Eddy is a bit more secluded than Barton Springs. One longtime Austinite describes it as the best swimming hole in town: “It’s somehow less crowded than the others, and I feel less like I’m the only one with a job there.”
Not to mention, this pool comes with a lovely view of Lady Bird Lake, which adds something extra for swimmers and sunbathers alike. Need to know: Open 5 a.m.-10 p.m. daily, entry fee, very kid-friendly. BARTHOLOMEW SWIMMING POOL 1800 E. 51st St. If you’re swimming with the wee ones, this public pool does not disappoint (hint: it’s the waterslides that really win the kids over). The pool also offers wading areas, lap swim and diving boards. Be warned, though: Shade is limited here, so be sure to generously apply the sunscreen. Need to know: Open daily (times vary), entry fee, very kid-friendly. BIG STACEY SWIMMING POOL 700 E Live Oak St. Looking to take a dip without the fuss? Then this pool in Travis Heights is for you. Like her more famous sisters, Stacey is a spring-fed pool, and she’s open year-round. “Going here is just such a chill experience,” Puerto says. “It feels like the neighborhood pool I grew up at, and it’s completely free and easy to get to.” Need to know: No entry fee, open daily except Mondays.

and the first to dry up when the inevitable summer heat hits, so visit this spot early and often. Of course, the Greenbelt is blessed with other spots, including Twin Falls, Sculpture Falls and Hill of Life Dam. However, each of these involves more of a hike, usually starting from the MoPac frontage road. Need to know: Dog-friendly, hike in. THE WATERFALL ON BULL CREEK 7806 N. Capital of Texas Highway If you’re a hiker or dog lover, this one’s for you. According to another local with two fur babies, there’s a sweet spot right at the waterfall: “There’s shallow spots for the dogs to romp around in above the falls, and it’s deep enough below to swim!” Need to know: Dog-friendly, hike in. HIPPIE HOLLOW 20 to 30 minutes from Central Austin Whether you’re feeling adventurous or just feeling too hot for swimwear, this is the place to be. This clothing-optional spot promises a safe and comfortable atmosphere away from the prying eyes of the city. Located on an expanse of the Colorado River, Hippie Hollow hosts

several gay events, including both Splash weekends (Memorial Day and Labor Day) and Otter Fest (July 15-17, 2016). Need to know: Not pet-friendly, entry fee, daytime use only. WINDY POINT 30 to 40 minutes from Central Austin Located on the banks of Lake Travis, this picnic, camping and deep-water swimming spot feels a bit more posh than some of Austin’s other offerings. The wellmaintained grass is perfect for drying off or working on that Texas tan, but swimmers beware: This water gets deep quickly, and there’s no lifeguard on duty. So if swimming isn’t your strong suit, this might not be the place for you. However, sailboats are available to rent and scuba diving is taught. Need to know: Not pet-friendly, open 365 days a year, camping offered, scuba diving and boat launch available, entry fee.

HAMILTON POOL About an hour from Central Austin For an enchanted swimming spot, look no further than this natural pool, which (as one fan says) just might be a home for fairies (the winged kind). During summer months – and especially weekends – there can be a wait to enter and a quarter-mile hike in is required, but the 45-foot waterfall certainly makes up for that. “I love the hike down to it,” hairstylist Chris Angeloro says. “Once you get there, the scene is breathtaking, and if you’re lucky you might see a baby armadillo!” Need to know: Reservations required (May 15-Sept. 30, 2016), not pet-friendly, entry fee, daytime use only. KRAUSE SPRINGS About an hour from Central Austin This spot might offer it all. With everything from a waterfall to swimming hole (complete with rope swing) and a natural pool, it’s a great place to beat the summer heat. And if you’re looking to stick around, camping is offered on the privately owned grounds. “It’s my favorite spot,” one local says. “It has an old-Austin vibe. The grounds are

beautiful, it’s Lone Star-friendly, there’s no waiting in line, and I love that dude who sits on his porch charging admission.” Need to know: Not pet-friendly, entry fee, camping (tent and RV) available. JACOB’S WELL About an hour from Central Austin This swimming hole is not for the faint of heart. Located just northwest of Wimberley, this perennial spring is shaped like its namesake – a well. Brave swimmers love to climb up the rocks above the 12foot mouth and jump in. For those with a little more fear (or sense), it’s an enjoyable spot nestled among limestone cliffs and beautiful Hill Country foliage. Need to know: Not pet-friendly, entry fee. Dare to take the plunge at Jacob’s Well?

I
n its “Top 10 Best Summer Songs of All Time” issue, Rolling Stone magazine gave the ninth-place spot to “Summertime” by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. While all ’90 fans were grateful that this classic made it on the list, the No. 1 spot would have been more fitting. In the words of the aforementioned artists, “With a pen and pad I compose this rhyme to hit you and get you equipped for the summer time. Summer, summer, summertime… Time to sit back and unwind.” What The Fresh Prince failed to mention was that this popular approach to summer translates terribly when it comes to financial matters. This article is designed to avoid having your finances take a summer vacation. To assist in this effort, I’m employing the acronym SUMMER.
S — START WITH A PLAN If we fail to plan, we plan to fail. A study in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services points to evidence that temperature (especially high summertime temps) is associated with higher levels of consumption and spending. It’s no wonder that our credit card balances skyrocket along with our A/C bills. When we clearly outline a goal-based strategy, we are much more likely to carry out the plan and steer clear of increased spending. It’s crucial that your plan meets the following SMART objectives developed by George T. Doran: • Specific — Target a specific area. • Measurable — Quantify (or at least suggest) an indicator of progress. • Agreed — Agreed upon and aligned with your goals. SU M M ER 2 0 1 6 | A G L C C . In the passenger’s seat on the way to your dream vacation, review your credit report and develop a plan to get out of debt. Additionally, find ways to use the heat to your advantage. What a perfect time to send a water bottle, fan or pool towel with your logo on it to your top clients

and prospects. If no one is buying your space heaters in the summer, start selling portable ice baths. Essentially, we can find ways to boost our income during the summer months. That is one of the best ways to offset the inclination to go on a summertime spending spree.
M — MAKE AN IMPACT THROUGH CHARITABLE GIVING When we give, we become a part of something greater than ourselves. It’s no surprise that the word “summer” comes from the Proto-Indo-European root “sam,” which means “together/one.” At first, it can seem counterintuitive to give away your money. After all, aren’t we trying to save as much money as possible? But research shows that people who donate money tend to be happier thanks to the emotional benefits associated with giving. During a recent trip to Kenya, I saw this in action. I gave a handful of almonds to a little boy. He immediately rushed to his friends and gave them each one almond until he had just one. I’ve never seen bigger smiles. Giving with intention lets you make a real difference.
M — MAKE A BUDGET OK, I know. I just lost half of you here, but stay with me. Every dollar you earn that you don’t save is going somewhere. Be the one who decides where it’s going. Assign a purpose to each dollar before you earn it. Numerous budgeting tools can help you save money by tracking your spending. Saving is the new spending. Or at least it should be. Don’t fall victim to Yoko Ono’s opinion that “summer passes and one remembers one’s exuberance.”
E — EDUCATE YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY Challenge yourself to learn something new that will lift your competence and your family’s competence surrounding money management. Daniele Vander Espt, vice president of financial education at the Belgium-based Financial Services and Markets Authority, says that “financial education is not about learning about products. It’s about developing a critical sense about money matters.” In fact, in preparing this article, I learned that each degree you raise your A/C can result in an estimated 3 percent savings on your utility bill.
R – RESET YOUR MINDSET BY KEEPING THE MAIN THING AS THE MAIN THING (THE WHY) Go back to the basics and don’t settle for a laidback financial attitude. Why do you want to avoid increased spending over the summer? Why is saving important to you and your family? Identify your vision based on your individual Why and go after it. Come aboard as we explore 8 LGBT-friendly cruises BY JOHN EGAN
Sure, we love Lady Bird Lake and Lake Travis, yet sometimes we yearn for more. A trip to the Gulf Coast will do the trick, but a cruise-ship vacation on the open seas really scratches the itch. Fortunately, the options for LGBT-friendly cruises are as wide open as the seas themselves. According to CruiseCritic.com, “straight” cruise lines in recent decades have recognized the spending power of LGBT tourists and have retooled their offerings to appeal to this segment. Of course, several operators offer LGBT-specific cruises, including Atlantis (predominantly gay), Olivia (lesbian) and RSVP (predominantly gay). And some tour companies arrange for small groups of LGBT tourists to be part of “straight” cruises. So, are you ready to set sail? Here are eight LGBT-targeted cruises that very well could float your boat.

The itinerary for this cruise undoubtedly is the envy of globetrotters: Monaco, Italy, Greece and Turkey, with eight ports of call in all. Passengers — about 2,800 of them — set sail on the Celebrity Equinox.
The Paul Gauguin is designed to sail the French Polynesia year-round, and this cruise certainly makes the rounds: Tahiti, Society Islands, Tuamotus and Motu Mahana. “The onboard atmosphere is an extension of the informal, relaxing environment of the islands and radiates warmth and informality,” Olivia says.
SAN DIEGO TO MEXICO HALLOWEEN CRUISE Atlantis There’s no other way of putting it: This is a giant floating party with about 1,800 guests! The cruise begins in San Diego and makes three stops on Mexico’s Pacific Coast: Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. ANTHEM CARIBBEAN CRUISE Atlantis
You and 1,399 other women will be treated to “abundant wildlife, magnificent glaciers, breathtaking mountains and forests, and quaint and charming seaside towns.” This trip on Holland America’s Amsterdam begins and ends in Seattle, with stops in Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan, Alaska, along with Victoria, British Columbia.

Capital City Men’s Chorus The theme of the spring concert at the McCallum Performing Arts Center on May 1 was “Pride! Unity! How does being a bicycle police officer affect your interaction with the public? I love being a bike cop! It allows me to engage with people about what sights to see, where to eat, casual conversations, etc. Biking also allows us (my fellow bike cops and me) to ride up on some violations that may not be detected by officers in a vehicle. It truly is an advantage. What are your responsibilities on a typical workday? As a district representative, I basically work on complaints and issues that patrol officers do not have the time or resources to deal with. Most of my contact is with homeless people and issues relating to public order. Doing this for eight years has allowed me to develop relationships with our chronically homeless. Bike cops work closely with service providers and caseworkers to try and direct these individuals to assistance to help get them off the street, often via rehabilitation or mental health services. What, att, t, besides riding rid each day, is your workout koutt routine? routine ti I am a runner! I am a former college basketball player and now try to keep up with my kids.
