Letter from the Editor

Hello Lovely Here we are a little more than half way through the year and many feel as though they are hitting the restart button. Others feel their finger hovering over the restart button and cant quite push it.

Maybe its fear of what may happen to their “program” if they do.

Will the screen start blinking? Will a virus creep in? Or will everything they thought they were doing right all of the sudden disappear or be deleted?

There’s a thing about starting over. It’s fresh, it’s clean, its new.

I’ve started over a lot in my life. We moved a lot when I was young. I’ve been married twice. I moved across the country a couple of times in my twenties and then there’s having kids. And well… each new child is a whole new experience and start. In all of those times there is anticipation and pain. There is also amazing reward. Reward in gaining the “I did it-itus”. Strength!

Gumption. Opposite of procrastination! Ambition. While the world stays in waiting in many ways, we all have an amazing opportunity to be or do a fresh, new something.

So without further ado here is the Summer Fall issue of Adore Magazine. An issue that I pushed the start button on and found out that not only was having a magazine at this time full of responsibilities to be a calm, inspiration, and joy to you, but that it was also responsible for showing ambition and what it actually can do.

From the couple that gets married in the light of Covid-19 to the Woman that takes her God given purpose to another level on the big screen. From the business owner that hangs on and fights for their customers in light of high unemployment rates, looting, unrest, and a widespread virus. Of course the inner division we all feel inside of our communities and across the country.

So where do we find peace, love and light? How can we be a light for each other? I actually had already been thinking back in early spring that everything does happen for a greater reason. No matter the pain.

In the transition period of what is 2020, what you will notice is that a virus single handedly slowed us all down to potentially make us realize what’s in front of us. A situation pulled the curtain to reveal the heart of our homes and to “fill our family’s cup” or our own before we work too hard to fill others.

Once we got the hang of that, it was like we were given the next challenge of the game of 2020. Use what we learned to bless our immediate communities in the face of deep-seated emotion. Use our purpose to make people in our immediate areas feel like they matter.

Groups all over using what they have to spread joy and hope with good donations, community gatherings, and prayer.

So what will be our reward once we complete the chutes and ladders, defeat the monsters, and collect all the coins? Will there be a celebration? Will the marching band escort a parade of families, friends, and strangers observing kindness? This still is unfolding . The key to achieving anything is we are never done. There is always more to achieve and celebrate in better and different ways than ever before.

Life-proof your fabrics: So many people feel on edge when we talk about upholstered furniture and they have a house full of kids, pets, and messy spouses. Rest assured, even the most chaotic households can manage many of the life-friendly fabrics that are on the market. Indoor/outdoor performance fabrics, texture, and leather are all very forgiving when it comes to messes. I swear by Crypton fabrics, which can withstand oily chocolate donut frosting, pink lipstick, and pizza sauce (I may have first-hand experience with all 3 of these!)

Update your built environment: Quartz countertops have been become hugely popular in the past few years as low-maintenance, extremely durable surfaces for everyday living. Quartz is non-porous and won’t draw in contaminants and bacteria in the same ways that granite and marble can. Let alone the fact that while there is a group of people that feel “the show must go on the way it was always planned”, there is just as many or more that are checking to see who is a rule follower to keep people safe in order to decide what places and resources to use to pull off their celebrations.

by CDC (take note that these guidelines outlined in this article are as of July 6 2020).

These are not laws but they do carry very identifiable consequences. In many states the guidelines being broken mean fines and potentially jail time.

What you can expect from event professionals.

A plethora of event professionals and vendors are wary of the amount of liability being placed on contracted event organizers and venues by individual states. Therefore here are some things you can expect if you plan to have your celebration at a venue in a lot of cases. This may not be the case for everyone but it is for everyone’s best interest. Regardless you want to check with every person involved before you move forward with your celebration.

1) Collection of Names, Addresses, Emails, and Phone Numbers of All of your guests prior to Arrival. Sometimes you have to do this.

Sometimes your guests may give this info on site at event.

2) A liability waiver signed upon entry by either you as the event host or each of our guests.

Absolving the liability of the vendors if there is an outbreak at the event. This can happen two ways. The caterer, event planner, and venue will create one document for you to sign saying you assume liability. The other way it can happen is the individual vendor or venue will have liability for you or your guests to sign.

3) Asking you to provide masks for your guests.

4) Temperature checks at door. Some venues have designated person at door. Others may ask you to hire a professional to do this.

5) Rental of Hand Sanitizer stations and additional hand washing stations.

6) Talk with all vendors involved and make sure everyone is on same page as to what is expected by you.

Celebrations

Here are recommendations by professionals and us regarding food.

Plain and simple DON’T DO BUFFET AND ANYTHING THAT IS SELF SERVE. Unless its all pre / individually packaged food. You can still do this in glass containers as well. This also means displays are only that of individual food that is packaged. No vast crudite or seafood display. No traditional wedding cake (in a lot of cases).

Cold options are the best ways to go. Many, for this reason, are only doing desserts in individual servings and mini crudités and having them served by someone masked, gloved and behind partition. You can purchase portable partitions online for around $140.

Hot food should be served by licensed caterer / restaurant to each guest by a masked and gloved chef or server. Before you had to pay for white glove service.

Now it’s mandatory with many caterers.

Pre pour beverages such as water so that hand /object contact isn’t happening on pitchers. Utilize a masked and gloved bartender.

So knowing all of the mazes to weave your celebration plans through brings us here. Many individuals and couples and are asking the questions

Should I postpone my event or wedding to Fall / Winter of 2020?

Should I elope or do virtual vows?

Should I do a MicroWedding or Dinner Party?

Should I completely postpone a large wedding or event to Fall of 2021 or early 2022?

Don't panic, we have some ideas for you.

One simple word of advice. Assess. Assess your guest list.

Are they at risk and who is likely to come even if you plan something?

Pregnant, Elderly, and those with underlying conditions will likely opt away from any invite if it involves more than 25 people.

If you do go ahead and have any sort of celebration here are fun twists.

What can you do to keep your guests feeling safe and having a good time?

Pre packaged food done in an elegant way. There are great options for elegant and eco friendly disposable paper products. Check out wood and biodegradable options for a more natural look. Bonus if you can find options like these that can be covered until served.

Something to note is that with all of these specialty measures the cost of event venues and food cost with caterers and restaurants will go up. Additional staffing required to do constant cleaning, purchase PPE ( gloves and masks for staff, as well as additional tables and chairs because the venue may only have a certain amount and now you can seat less people per table. If your venue is doing temperature checks at the door they may hire a specific company or person to carry that out which will be added into a cost passed to customer at some point.

Can you “have it all”?

That just may be an award-winning question when it comes to all of our lives. A life filled with joy, with success, with giving, and blessings. Far too often, we hold ourselves to the highest bar. That we should be a certain amount of successful by a certain point in our lives; that we should have x amount of money by some arbitrary point in our lives; that we should have grown children who are reading and writing perfectly and ahead of the rest of the class; that x age, our fully-funded retirement plan (ha!) is sitting there just waiting to be cashed out.

But in the pursuit of “having it all,” do we risk overlooking the incredible gifts we have in hand in our amazing now? What it is we have achieved is what God has given to us and, by design, falls into alignment with our true purpose.

Adore Magazine caught up with Camille Tucker – a woman who, although it shouldn’t matter at all what she’s achieved for someone to pay attention – has much to be proud of. The youngest daughter in the former “first family” of Compton, CA, the embrace of a purposeful life was instilled in Camille at a young age, but has not been without struggle. Today, Camille is a successful screenwriter and director, a professor of her craft at Biola University in La Mirada, CA, a public speaker, mentor to aspiring writers, and an ordained minister, too.

To learn of a time when Camille doubted both her gifts and her purpose is hard to comprehend. But if we’re going to get ahead of our story, let’s borrow one of our subject’s techniques and smash-cut to this year’s Easter weekend debut of the Lifetime biopic “The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel.” Co-written

by Camille, who also developed the story, the film debuted to 2.7 million viewers and ranked as the year’s highest-rated original movie for television.

Being in alignment with her gifts, by Camille’s telling, is what helped nourish her in what became a 15 year journey to bring “The Clark Sisters” to the screen. It is as a storyteller, among her many God-given talents, by which Camille hopes to bring joy, hope and new insights into the lives of others. Camille has a message to share with us all on how blessed we all really are… and that you matter.

Adore: So Camille, with so much wonderful happening for you right now—with the release of the critically-acclaimed Lifetime movie The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel—in terms of career, what do you believe was and is the biggest struggle or hardship that contributed to you getting to this moment in your career?

Camille: Thank you for mentioning The Clark Sisters. I feel very fortunate to be the co-writer of that project. And one thing that’s really beautiful about [the film] is that there were quite a few African American women that were involved in shaping the authenticity and beauty of that project. Including myself and the other writer Sylvia L. Jones, [there was] director Christine Swanson, and the amazing producers (Queen Latifah, Mary J Blige, Missy Elliott). It is an amazing project to have all of these black women at the helm.It’s a rarity that we see in the industry and I feel really blessed to be part of [it]. The biggest struggle that I had was when I sold my first script in my twenties. I was an assistant at Walt Disney Studios, and I sold several scripts in row

with my writing partner—I think it was about six or seven scripts —and NONE of them got made. I went through a spiritual crisis at that time in my life. Thinking I was not talented, not good enough, had not been called to be a writer. I completely got out of the industry. At that time I was filled with self-doubt. My spiritual mentors (my brother who is my pastor, Walter Tucker III; my other brother Kenneth Tucker; my mother Martha Tucker who is the matriarch of our family and a very grounded woman in her faith of God; and my sister Keta… gotta touch everybody! ). I had deep conversations with them and some of my other spiritual mentors. I came to the conclusion that I was in a “Moses, Back Side of the Dessert” period. Where I think… God extracts you and sits you down from something that you thought you wanted or thought was yours. It was a very soul-searching period. Really, I came to the conclusion that I really do love writing. I am supposed to be here. I went back and got my masters from Fuller Seminary and was very grateful [to] add that experience as a writer, and filmmaker. And I became a Professor at Biola University during that time. What a lot of people don't know is that I worked in Hispanic TV as a

Kat : - I feel you ! ( Kat Minks looks up and raises hand to that) I have gone through some of that myself in my own career. I think a lot of women can relate to that. Life is very fluid and full of ups and downs. When you’re in your twenties seem so detrimental like they are the end. When you get older you realize each situation opens up new doors.

Camille : As I matured I realized that every little stumbling, every little fall was like God preparing me for something else.

Every misstep was God’s ultimate plan for my life. And clarity, learning, humility , wisdom will come from what we sometimes see as failures. Don’t be afraid to fail.

Kat : What do you think about women that want to “have it all” (career, family, love, self-fulfillment) and do you truly believe it can happen ? How do you do that for yourself, fit it all in, being the busy women that you are?

Camille : I think women want to have it all. But for me I know it’s not really a matter of having it all. As you know I’m single. I’m not married. I don’t have children. I think there is a sacrifice in that area of my life. It’s not that I don’t want to married. When I encounter the right person. Perhaps at earlier parts of my life I put more into my career. I was not attune to someone that could have been the one. I try not to look at it with regret. You are are not gong to be the master of everything. I don’t think we should be looking to have it all.

There is always going to be some area that will require sacrifice. Honestly we should be seeking “What is my purpose? And “What is my destiny?” . I really love the book “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren. I used some of his principals as I was going through different phases in my life. I feel walking in purpose is more essential.

I feel like the season is coming for Blessed in the City. It’s about four women who have been dating and doing their thing—I would say it’s my inspirational take on Sex and the City. And in this movie, they’re not trying to have a lot of sex…they’re trying to not have sex. [laughs]

I think women that are entrepreneurs that want to have children you have to find different ways to fulfill that. Whether it be your partner filling in where you can’t. Looking at it as a season. What ever is important is what you will make time for.

It takes time and effort for things that we dream and desire. I think we have to be realistic about that.

Kat: You are a successful woman and unmarried, yet you seem to have it all. So how do you think we get women (especially Christian women), to be strong in themselves and know that if your mate is meant to present themselves to your life, they will at the right time?

Camille - “ I don’t know if you’re asking right person about that” “ In twenties, I felt this him God?” I feel like that is fruitless. I know this is a cliche, but I feel like with more life and more wisdom I really have surrendered all of my thoughts about marriage to God. In my speaking and in my writing and interviewing couples, every story is so different. I really think some women may not want to hear this, I have shifted my focus from that.

I feel like in my own case ( and sometimes in the past) I tried to make things happen. Now I have acceptance of what God has for me. I don’t want to be downer, I’ve really come to the place of where if marriage is not for me, then I really want to be content in it. It took awhile to get there. I feel like you never know what could happen.

Kat: Finding a mate is very similar in a lot of cases to when a woman is trying to get pregnant. I think when you’re putting too much focus on it, God says “no, you’re not ready”.

Adore magazine is about celebrating every aspect of your life including your “self,” in the literal and fluid sense, as well. You are an ordained minister. What prompted you to become a minister?

Camille: thank you for clarifying that. I am an ordained minister, so I have a dual role. I’m a screenwriter, but I’m also an ordained minister, so I don’t minister to couples. As a single woman, I don’t know what I would have to offer any couple.

When I say I speak to couples, I actually was engaged once and I was in a premarital class and I met a lot of couples and heard a lot of stories in that class. But let me switch to a different hat.

As a screenwriter…screenwriters are investigative reporters… so as a screenwriter, I talk to a lot of couples because i interview a lot of people about their lives so that i can find out the real story so i can try to bring that into my stories. But as a minister, mainly, my ministry is kind of two-fold. I feel like I have a ministry toward women and women’s issues, particular being single after you’re 30 years old! But my ministry is through my filmmaking and my writing, as well. I feel as though I’m continually learning how to integrate God and God’s themes. God’s messages, even the spirit of God, the ideas and things that turn us to God in the tradition of Jesus as a parabolic storyteller. [The thinking is] how can I incorporate that into my screenwriting?

When I do go and speak, it’s often regarding “singleness” and women’s issues. And then oftentimes, I’m called to speak – whether it’s to a faith audience or a creative filmmaking audience – it’s about filmmaking and about screenwriting.

Kat: I would love to come and see you speak! I’ve watched some of your messages when you speak - Can you talk about your project Blessed in the City “ that you reference in one of your recent talks?

Camille: Blessed in the City would be a great film for your audience. It’s a screenplay that i started writing a bit ago – and this happens sometimes in the film industry – that sometimes you’ll write something and it might not be the “season” for it to happen at that time. But I feel like the season is coming for Blessed in the City. It’s about four women who have been dating and doing their thing – i would say it’s my inspirational take on Sex and the City. My friends and I were really into that show and we noticed, “Hey, there’s no women of faith in that show. No one has a different perspective, and we don’t see any women of color.” So I wrote a multi-cultural “inspirational” version. And in this movie, they’re not trying to have a lot of sex like in Sex and the City, they’re trying to not have sex. [laughs] In my real life, I am not a virgin. I had just come to a point where i wanted to be a “born again” virgin and so I took a vow of celibacy and abstinence after being in the dating world. I looked at women who may want to recommit to sexual abstinence and that’s what that film is about. We see in the Christian community things about sexual purity, People don’t really talk about career women who haven’t had that journey and this was my response to that.

Think cool, successful, career women that go to born again virgin conference and then they decide to try to date without sex for 90 days. It’s a rom-com that looks at female friendships and it’s really about loving yourself and realizing that sex is a very deep connection. Evaluating how we enter into sexual relationships and loving ourselves before we give away that part of ourselves. There’s a woman who has already been married, a virgin, and one that already had sex (a divorce’). So I get to bring the different perspectives to bare in that conversation.

This is a script that I actually sold to Will Smith’s company but it did not get made. I have been reworking and retooling it and I feel at the right time with the right producer it will get made.

I’ve come to the point where I want to be an independent film maker and go for it and get my projects done. That’s the spirit behind this project. It may not get done with a studio and get done independently. It’s close to my heart because it’s loosely based on my real experience with my friends. We had a bible study and we decided we were going to date differently.

Kat: So have you ever thought about doing your own bible study?

Camille: I have not, but I am writing a companion book to the film that is a workbook that is a self reflection book. Similar to what they did with the movie “Fireproof”. So maybe with that there would be some guided bible study.

Now that I’m the parent, when we sit down to a meal together, whether it’s on the front porch (our preferred location for supper during spring & summer), or at our dining table, I am so grateful for these moments. Food provides us a way to grow our lives together without making an appointment. Our meals create space for prayer, asking questions, actively listening, learning from each other, serving each other, and lots of laughter and silliness. I love how sitting at the table puts us each in a position to be facing one another. Our family meals cause us to pause our day long enough to really look at each other and learn how to respect one another. These are all values I pray my kids carry with them beyond our home into their relationships with their friends and into society as they become adults themselves.

While our meals are not fancy, I do try to help grow my children’s affinity for trying new things through food. A few summers ago when my children were 8, 5, and 1, we started a fun summer activity where each week I would take them to the store and allow them to choose one new fruit or vegetable that we would try as a family. It was kind of like a treasure hunt with a surprise ending! Having them pick out the unique food fueled them with courage to eat it.

We were all in a position of stepping outside of our comfort zone and learned that new foods can be fun!

Trifle Recipe •

1 prepared angel food cake (13 oz)

1 qt. fresh strawberries

•

3 cups (750 mL) fresh blueberries

•

1 container (16 oz) frozen sliced strawberries in syrup, thawed

•

4 containers (6 oz/175 g each) blended strawberry yogurt

•

1 pkg (3.3 oz) white chocolate instant pudding and pie filling

•

2 tbsp (30 mL) fresh lemon juice

•

2 cups (500 mL) thawed frozen whipped topping, divided.

Now that my children are a bit older, they enjoy having more freedom with food, sometimes opting to order off the adult menu at a restaurant, instead of being relegated to the same 5 items that are on every kids’ menu. They have taken the initiative to make parts of a family meal by themselves and are given guidance and shown how to use kitchen tools properly. In my business as a Pampered Chef consultant, I oftentimes find myself quickly taking a video to capture the baking or cooking that they have already initiated without my prompting! They are learning to enjoy the freedom to experiment in the kitchen and that there’s no such thing as failure: every cooking experience can be redeemed. My 11year-old son reminds me that his favorite birthday cake was the year I made him a trifle dessert for his 6th birthday, which is basically a cake that is completely destroyed (crumbled or cut into cubes) and interspersed with layers of whipped cream. There are many variations to how you can create the layers (doesn’t always have to be angel food cake or berries).

This cake made a repeat appearance this past February for his 11th birthday and more importantly, established a happy childhood memory with a food that’s easy to replicate.

As we’re in a season where we could all benefit from some celebration, here is the recipe for trifle dessert from the Pampered Chef website. Use it to celebrate anything from birthdays to just making it through the day. Pair it with some ice cream or fresh berries and share it with someone you adore!

ttending celebrations from afar are no longer foreign to the world.

Couples made some tough choices to either move forward with their plans, minus guests or to postpone. Seeing photos like these will likely confuse future generations as to why we had to go to such lengths and there will be stories about the very unique weddings taking place at the moment. For example take this couple, James and Taylor.

Who decided to forge ahead and make their wedding day happen. With the in person guests being little more than the facilitators of the big day comprised of their wedding planner, officiant, and venue manager.

James and Taylor kept to their wedding and were able to move into the next chapter of their life together instead of the back and forth that many couples who have already postponed once and are potentially looking at second postponements due to restrictions and safety issues that Covid-19 poses in so many parts of the country.

When discussing the nuptials with planner Dana Allison of Keyed Up Events in Minneapolis, Minnesota it was evident she knew the importance making this event as memorable and fun for the couple as she could. Going as far as to offer up a space that doubles as a meeting and event space she uses frequently because she is a member. “The bride was very laid back about the situation and actually. The couple strolled into their wedding relaxed and knew us professionals had them covered.�. Although the bride did wear her gown she refrained from the fuss of wearing makeup to this occasion, but the essence and the romance of it being the two of them and guests tuning in virtually ( notice the laptop positioned specifically for the ceremony) kept the couple present and still made it special none the less.

One vision I have for the film when I comes out is traveling and doing speaking engagements with a group of multicultural women and a person I consult with in the book named Jimdre - a “born again virgin” We will have to talk with you and others to go around to different cities to discuss their stories as something that happiness following the film or screenings.

Kat: That would be amazing! Some of my own heart when I started this magazine was because having gone through marriage and struggles. Yet at the time here I was as an event planner helping people put on the most beautiful fabulous days of their lives, going through that hard difficult stuff relationships bring.

Camille: One of my pastors used to say this. “People always focus on the wedding, and never on the marriage” The wedding day is beautiful celebration, as it should be.

One thing I’ve learned in doing research for projects and Blessed in the city is the marriage is where we need work.

The day is one day. It’s supposed to usher you into that lifetime. I was engaged once and I always said I want to focus on the talking about the marriage. Hey, everyone dreams of having the most beautiful day.

Kat: Why do you think women and women of color need to absorb what you are sharing more than ever before? Do you think the social movements with #blacklivesmatter and #metoo will pave the way for more women to pursue and attain success in Hollywood and in other professions?

Camille - I think it’s an interesting time right now. In our country the cultural movements going on. There were years when there was a white nonnative. When you ent into a board room I was the only colored voice in there.

Ageism. We are getting to a more inclusive time. Even with things like autism, deaf, blindness. I think those that are content creators who are writing stories that have the palate of voices of people from different social economic backgrounds. It think it’s important we keep pushing oaths moment so that we don’t go back to the status quo.

For people that feel different and let’s support each other in getting these voices out there.

Kat - Great point about ageisim too and how what we still see on tv doesn’t reflect that even though women are having babies into their late 40’s almost 50’s now, Camille - I definitely have. Heart for empowering women.

“Biblical Examples of how God has used women to do amazing things. “ Deborah who was a general, to Ruth who is an ancestor of Jesus, to Esther who changed the heart and the end of the king. The one thing I love about Jesus and being a follower of Christ is that Jesus saw women. Even down to the women at the well. He had a different conversation with women. I want to encourage women to pursue their god given destiny.

Kat: What do you say to women who are not sure if they should commit their faith in the Lord and letting the Lord be their guide in life instead of (letting society dictate that role?)

Camille - How to reach people and women on the fence about faith. Theologians talk about us being in a “post modern age”.The way people communicate and relate is so different. We used to be basing everything on science and fact. A lot of people even lost their faith because people felt there was no way to prove God by science. I feel the era we are in now are bit more touchy feely. People going to therapy. A lot of people want to have a spiritual encounter that is beyond a sermon. Maybe not something so didactic.

So what I have found is my relationship with people, love of God within me that offers me opportunities to have conversations with people that may allow me to talk to people about faith.

I want raised in religious household. My dad was an associate pastor at a Baptist church but we were not forced to attend or go regularly. I know when I starting seeking God I was having life issues. It brought More peace, more clarity. Seeing dreams manifest. That is what has happened in my own life. I have noticed in some of the women I am talking to ( when I speak) that some of them may not have even seen a Bible! May have never have gone to church service! So how do we have a dialogue with them? I honestly believe, Sometimes there’s a bridge or way into a conversation that is not the typical way that we think.

Sometimes there’s a song and the lyric makes them ask questions . Sometimes it’s a movie that they see or has something that makes them have questions or go deeper about faith. That s why I’m so passionate about using art and filmmaking and drawing people to ask questions about God and the larger issues of life. For anyone that wants to share faith is we have to be creative but people need to know us and trust us. Because some religious leaders have not been trustworthy so they equate the Christian faith with imperfect people and imperfect leaders. So what I try to do is let people get to know me and trust me and maybe they will want to ask em about my faith.

Kat - Talking about praying… I think people are so walled up some people don’t even know what to say when you ask if you can pray for them. How can we teach people to be more open to accepting to the idea of prayer and faith?

Camille: I think it’s about building relationships with people that need faith in their lives. You see people get open about it if they know you do offer it and if you get to know them a little more. Often you see people get that peace with prayer if they come to you because they know you are faithful. It’s not that they think the prayer is going to help their grandmother not dye, but the fact that someone took a moment and “walk with them”. Sometimes people come back even If they have not been open about it before.

Kat: Do you think faith and messages of God’s presence is seeing a resurgence or an awakening more than ever before?

Why do you think that is? All these new faith-based, up and coming television shows and movies about faith. People seeking answers and reassurance. Do you think there will be an influx in Christian-based television and film?

Camille: That would be so cool, wouldn’t it? I think people are in a “seeking time” and it’s really good.

The fact that faith-based film and TV shows have done well causes Hollywood to sit up and pay attention to Christians and their audience. I think it’s also important to look at contextual theology; to realize with different ethnicities in the way people worship and how they relate to their faith. I think it’s important in the faith community as we do more of these projects to show more inclusiveness and making sure there’s a diversity of ethnicity and roles.

This is a little… (waives hands vertically)…if you’ve noticed the church has also been divided amongst racial lines throughout the years. We need to show that we need to walk together more and worship together more and the way we worship. “Go across the aisle,“ so to speak, so that there’s more ways that we get to know Christians that are different than we are. So whether it’s on a worship level or entertainment level, we need to show that we are more open to share.

Kat: Did any of the movie emulate your life growing up as a daughter and sister to mayors in Compton in the sense — that the Clark sisters’ mother—Dr. Mattie Moss Clark is very strict and has a vision for her daughters. I hear you were sent to a school outside of Compton. There must have been a “vision” that your parents had for you.

Do you think that’s why you were passionate about a project that took 15 years to release? Did that extra length that your parents went to light a fire in you to not give up?

Camille: That’s a great observation. I grew up with a father who was the mayor of Compton and they had an excellence expectation - He always told me “as an African American woman you have to work five times harder.” I think you see a lot of African Americans that have parents that grew up in the South you are going to be judged a certain way so you have to excel, and know how to dress, and the right fork to use. It was a blessed and interesting upbringing, but it wasn’t until I got older that I appreciated it.

I think the beauty of The Clark Sisters is seeing that in Dr. Clark and what she passed on to her daughters as a singing group. There’s no middle ground or room for mediocrity.

My upbringing did affect the work I did on the script because my dad pushed for excellence. But what also affected me is coming from a family of four children and a father who is leader in the community. Every child in my family is strong-willed and has their own path of what they wanted to do. So when I met the Clark sisters I could really relate to that because they are all talented and amazing dynamic women of God. So... what do you do with five talented daughters all in one family? I used to ponder that when I was writing the drafts of the script.

Kat : It must have been so invigorating and inspiring to be around those women because their stories are just incredible. The perseverance they had. I had tears when I watched the movie, it was so beautiful to see.

Also I heard that there were often celebrity visitors to your home, like Sidney Poitier, and many more.

Camille: It was so interesting because my father was the mayor of Compton, my mother was the first lady of Compton. My mother was the consummate hostess. She hosted Ted Kennedy , Sidney Poitier, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Paula Kelly. I was pretty young, but she always had great dinners and parties. I had to know how to meet people and know how to dress and the right fork to use. It was a blessed and interesting upbringing, but it wasn’t until I got older that I appreciated it.

Kat: Because Adore does focus on celebrating every part of your life. Do you like to entertain? And when you do, what is a typical “Camille Tucker dinner party” like? How does it differ from gatherings at your home growing up?

Camille: I like to entertain small groups of people.

Definitely not like my mother with the tents, silverware and China—what home entertaining and being with friends means to her. I just really like having my family and…a close group of adopted family and friends. I’m into the intimate gathering. I love family. I feel honestly blessed and we all love each other and that we can pray and get past tough situations.

Kat : The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel has some buzz to be chosen as a nominee for Emmy. If you win a nomination or even an Emmy, how will you celebrate that?

Camille: I celebrate everything by giving honor to God. I have a screen writing job right now that I’m focusing on right now. If there was a nomination or win it would be amazing. There was so many different pieces in getting the project made and done. To be honest with you 2.7 million viewers on opening night and subsequent 3.4 million + viewers, I’m celebrating now! This is the celebration!

Right here… right now! But also the people that were touched by the project and it’s message. The message of God and family unity through the ups and downs. I think anybody could relate to the hardships we go through as we find our voice. And that’s what you see with the Clark sisters. They are all trying to find their adult identity, but the seed that their mother planted was God. And so many people that are believers or not resonated with that, whatever country or belief. Also I would like to do more products like that. Messages of redemption of, reconciliation, sacrificial love.

Kat: You mention Blessed in the City being an independent film.

Are you thinking about directing?

Camille : I actually do direct. Directing is not my strong Muscle, but as a writer it’s essential. Every time I direct a new piece I learn more. Now because I’ve directed six short films one (Cellular) winning an award at the Roxbury Film Festival, that has really encouraged me. I’ve decided the next thing to tackle is directing a full-length feature film.

That’s my plan for Blessed in the City. Then, I may work with the studios later, but I love the independent spirit of film making.

Kat: Over the years, I have always loved what a certain phrase means and makes people feel appreciated. I love the phrase “You matter.”However, a phrase in the movie The Clark Sisters caught my attention.

A scene where Clark Mattie’s husband says “It doesn’t look good on you,” and Mattie replies “What?” And he says “Ambition.” Camille, I want to say to you, “Ambition looks amazing on you!”

Camille: Thank you. I feel like it’s a continuing journey. I hope to always remain humble and to be seeking God for what He wants to do through me and through those I love and others I support. But so thank you so much for having me!

Celebrations and Events Trends 1: Sustainability: Flowers being a huge part of this because of the use of foam in designs previously. Kat Minks Design is one of the many florists that are eliminating 95% of the toxic foam used in designs and will solely use recyclable and reusable products in floral designs in the new year. Being the savvy planner I am, I started my business with a lower carbon footprint because of the fact that I encourage and utilize reusable stock that I rent to my clients.

Whatever I don’t have I typically source from a rental company where reuse and repurposing is key in incorporating and executing the vision.

2: Gamification: Competitions, Leader boards, Inclusive Games. Every time you use your smartwatch to meet a goal you are using gamification. You get a “high five” digitally and more people are looking for praise and high fives. Now even more with Covid and people social distancing games are taking the place at events where dancing used to be.

3: Personalization: Unique signage and details of branding or monograms everywhere from branding on furniture, fixtures, walls, and art. You can expect this to carry in home decor trends as well.

The key when using any color is to pop it with a monotone base color like brown, gray, or cream.

( and Stations in general, Since all food must be looked after in a group for safety reasons) Years ago when craft cocktails came on the scene in restaurants many rolled their eyes at the $15 - $20 libations. Now anything regarding craft cocktails is easily purchased at your local super market, boutique, or even target. From specialty syrups, sugars, herbs, and ice cube trays. Even having an interactive entertainment element to a party here dancing together is no longer deemed safe.
