Welcome to a new, regular column in the absolutely! focus media family of magazines. We’re calling it Fort Bend Strong. Our intent is to point out why Fort Bend County is the greatest place in the United States to raise a family, start a business, and chase your American Dream. That’s Fort Bend Strong!

Having the honor of being the elected United States Congressman for nearly all of Fort Bend County for twelve years, I have a unique perspective on why we are Fort Bend Strong. It comes from being one of 36 Members of Congress from Texas and one of 441 Representatives from all 50 states, five territories and one federal district.

One of the things Members of Congress typically talk about is their home.

We ask a lot of questions. “Tell me about the district you represent. How’s your local economy doing? Are you adding jobs? How are you doing with recovery from natural disasters – hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, fires, etc.? Are your public schools in trouble? Are your roads one massive pothole? Do you ever wish your home wasn’t so dependent on dollars coming from Washington, DC?”

Every time a colleague asked me questions like these, a big Fort Bend Strong smile appeared on my face. My answers were facts we all know. Our economy? Booming. Our job creation?

Explosive. Our recovery from Harvey?

Great. Our public schools? Outstanding and diverse. Terrible roads? Nope.

Dependent on money from Washington?

Huh?!?

They would all shake their heads in disbelief, especially friends from California and New York. A few accused me of bragging without facts. They really did. It became clear very quickly that my colleagues’ reactions weren’t about unjustified Texas bragging. They were about an overwhelming jealousy of Texas.

Since Texas jealousy rages in every other state in the United States, we felt it was important that y’all have the necessary tools to teach “the uninformed” why Texas is so special. Even some of our Texas neighbors who don’t live in Fort Bend County are jealous of Fort Bend.

Fort Bend Strong is a way to correct these misguided attitudes.

Each Fort Bend Strong column will share real stories about real Fort Bend residents – ordinary neighbors who respond to life’s challenges in a self-sacrificing manner that makes all of us better – Fort Bend Strong. Some of these stories may bring tears of Fort Bend pride to your eyes. That’s Okay – that’s Fort Bend Strong.

Frozen - Not the Movie As we go to press with this book, it’s in the single digit temperatures. We’ve gone to press during COVID, during hurricanes, during floods and now this. We’re beginning to feel like the postal service around here – neither sleet, nor snow, nor rain stops us! Of course, the postal service has been MIA for the past four days, yet we forge ahead by candlelight and batteries. Yes, there could be multiple interpretations of that sentence, but y’all know what A year to remember – etched in ice.

I mean.

From COVID and now to the frigid frost on the Gulf Coast, we have become hunker-downers. We’re getting good at it. I personally feel that it could be a category at the next Olympics – provided we have a next Olympics. But despite Mother Nature’s cool sense of humor, we are planning for spring. Alisa Murray shares some tips to getting on getting our gardens ready for Spring on page 11. Warmer weather – and spring flowers – can’t get here soon enough for me.

We also celebrate a huge milestone for a Fort Bend business. Ideal Carpet and Flooring has been making homes beautiful in our community for 20 years, and if I have to stay home much longer, I’m calling Vangie and her amazing team to start redoing my floors! A girl can only take so much time on the home turf without making changes.

Perhaps the most exciting change to our absolutely! focus media family happens this month. Former Congressman, Fort Bend cheerleader and dear friend Pete Olson has joined us with a unique column entitled Fort Bend Strong. And with the challenges we hunker-downers have faced over the past year, I can’t think of a more appropriate title or man to tell the amazing stories of our community. Pete, we’re thrilled you’ve joined our Focus family.

Of course, March brings us the Ides of March, which The Honorable Pete Olson and is widely considered unlucky – at least it was for Julius Patti Parish-Kaminski.

Caesar since he was assassinated on March 15, 44 BCE. Personally, I’m ready for some good luck. So please be certain and wear green on St. Patrick’s Day this March 17th because we could all use a little “luck of the Irish!”

emember the days when someone asked, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” Honestly, back then the founders of the family-owned Ideal Carpet and Flooring, Inc. (ICF) thought five years was unimaginable.

Now, 20 years later, they are reflecting on their humble beginnings.

Later, ICF welcomed an experienced full-time design consultant, Ruben Perez, who has proven to be a customer service asset to their business, along with providing ICF a strong social media presence. Customers routinely comment on how much they appreciate Perez’s attentiveness and personal touch.

Backlogs in Texas District Courts exist due in part to over a 10% increase in civil case filings annually in recent years. Trial judges have worked hard to address the backlog; however, their caseloads remain substantial and are exacerbated by the suspension of jury trials due to Texas Supreme Court COVID-19 mandates.

If you want to expedite your lawsuit proceedings, a “Special Judge” (Section 151 of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code) can be your solution. There are specific qualifications of a Special Judge.

A snapshot of what this looks like: Attorneys, on opposing sides of a case, can agree to use a Special Judge they have selected who has special expertise in the area of law of the case being litigated. The attorneys submit a request/ motion to the Judge in whose court a case is pending who may – not must, refer any/all of the issues in the lawsuit to the Special Judge, including final judgment.

This allows for expedited hearings, trial schedules and for parties to have control of timing and location of the proceedings. Some Special Judges will work outside of a 9 am – 5 pm schedule and weekends. While you pay the Special Judge their fee, the attorneys’ time is used more efficiently.

Family Law and COVID-19 Update The Supreme Court of Texas issued the 33rd Emergency Order on January 14, 2021, regarding the COVID-19 State of Disaster, and subject to constitutional limitations, “requires courts to continue to use all reasonable efforts to hold proceedings remotely and to follow OCA’s Guidance for All Court Proceedings; prohibits Justice and Municipal Courts from holding an in-person jury proceeding prior to 4/1; permits district, county, and probate courts to hold in-person jury trials after certain actions; permits courts to hold virtual jury proceedings in certain cases with certain technology provided to prospective jurors; extends the possession and access to a child provisions from previous orders.” Hearings are set using “Zoom.”

New Rosenberg Railroad Museum Exhibit Debuts The Rosenberg Railroad Museum will be launching the first of three temporary exhibitions this year. In honor of Black History Month, the first exhibit will be “The Pullman Porter Exhibit: How Railroads Changed the West & Pullman Porters Changed the World.” This exhibit will run February 5th through May, 31st.

The Rosenberg Railroad Museum curator, Cecilia Abad, in collaboration with the Black Cowboy Museum on the history of the black cowboy and the effects of railroading on that particular industry, was able to discover historical stories of struggles, adaptions, then small triumphs to lead the way for positive change in our nation.

Board of Trustees Call for May Bond Election

When voters head to the polls for the May 2021 election, they will find four Katy Independent School District bond propositions on their ballot.

Katy ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve an Order calling for a school bond election to be held this upcoming May. The election will include the proposed 2021 bond package developed by the Community Bond Advisory Committee (CBAC), which includes the following propositions: • Proposition A: New Schools, Renovations, Safety and Security and Building Component Replacements – $591,368,568.

• Proposition B: Classroom and Campus Technology – $59,755,242.

• Proposition C: Natatorium for High School #10 – $13,842,610.

• Proposition D: Campus and District Athletic Facilities/Stadiums Repairs and Component Replacements – $11,260,000.

The 2021 Bond includes no change to the tax rate and addresses the District’s immediate capital needs through over 400 campus and facility projects, including five new schools and a transportation facility, major renovations and/or additions for seven existing campuses, safety and security improvements, component replacements that include chiller replacements, re-roofing and kitchen equipment, technology upgrades and other projects.

Important voting dates include: • Early Voting by Personal Appearance: Monday, April 19th to Tuesday, April 27th.

• Election Day: Saturday, May 1st.

The National Charity League, Inc., Star Chapter (NCL, Inc.) honored the Senior Class of 2021 at the Chapter’s annual Senior Recognition Ceremony held at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square. Avoid poorly ventilated spaces. Avoid indoor spaces that do not have access to fresh air from the outdoors. If indoors, bring in fresh air by opening windows and doors.

Wear a mask. Masks help prevent you from getting COVID or spreading it to others.

Wear a mask in public or when around people who don’t live in your household.

Wash hands often. Wash your hands for 30 seconds with soap and water after coughing, sneezing, after using the restroom and before eating and preparing food. If soap is not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Stay 6 feet away from others. Avoid close contact with people by putting at least six feet of distance between yourself and others. Remember that even people without symptoms may be able to spread the virus.

Cover coughs and sneezes. Always cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Discard the tissue immediately and wash or disinfect your hands.

Avoid crowds. Avoid crowded areas like restaurants, bars and movie theatres. Being around large crowds puts you at a higher risk for COVID.

Clean and disinfect. High-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, countertops, desk phones, keyboards and toilets should be cleaned and disinfected once daily.

Katy ISD Athletes Sign with Prestigious Colleges As many students begin to wrap up their final months of the 2020-21 academic year, the Katy Independent School District celebrated the hard work of athletes across the District during its February Signing Day event, where they officially committed to a college or university. Their countless hours of practice, sweat and effort paid off and was recognized during a memorable moment in which high school senior athletes signed a binding national letter of intent for a collegiate sport. Spring Edition

It’s almost here – my favorite time of the year – and there’s so much to do to be prepared for the garden. With some thoughtful planning and soil prep, you too could be well on your way to creating your very own yard to table dinner.

Here’s what should be done right now in the garden and going forward for the spring season.

F ruit Trees

Vegetables

Vegetables that need to be started from seedlings should be put in small containers that can be cared for close to the house until they are strong enough to be moved to what I call their “forever homes.” It’s also time to pick up several varieties of peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, squashes and herbs from the local farmer’s markets. Soon after you see the tomatoes for purchase, cucumbers and eggplants will follow.

Stagger lettuce seedlings and beets so they stay at various stages of development, and as you are cooking from one, there’s another just behind it for consumption. This insures you will always have what you need for salads. I always plant the usual varieties of tomatoes found in the markets because the Bonnie Bell man knows what works here and takes that confusion out of the equation for you. Buy what you will eat; however, there’s nothing more delightful than growing heirloom purple’s such, as Black Beauties, Blue Cream Berries, Cherokee Purples or the tiger striped Green Zebra.

They are all different and create not only a spectacular display to wow your Instagram, but they add something quite unique and lovely to your plate.

In our part of the country, fruit trees are planted after the danger of a cold snap has passed. Prep the soil in the garden for these and directly place where you want these to live and grow long term. Be conscious of the wild life as they also love fruits and will partake.

Citrus can be a little tricky, and I have the grapefruits, lemons and limes now in the orchard but not before spending a full year closer to where I have kept an eye on them. Same thing goes for those dragon fruits, olives and pomegranates. Don’t forget to fertilize everything and keep an eye out for pests. Acting early on can save or kill all of your efforts. I recommend a daily walk through the gardens making notes of who needs what so everyone remains “living a sweet life” in there.

Flowers

Flowering gardens, or as we call them cutting gardens, are one of the most special because you can literally eat from them, decorate your home with them and they act as a big stage attracting all your best friends to pollinate your hard work in the main garden. During March you should be tucking sun flower seeds into your vegetable beds to help support the plants and give a show of color to your creation. Dahlias, zinnias and marigolds can provide you with bouquets for your table and to share with your friends.

Herbs

Finally, the herb garden is a mainstay that once established can and will find you throughout the year cooking more amazing dishes than you thought possible. The main players that you will want to get planted now are, as I say, “all of them.” Even if you do not particularly like rosemary, you’ll discover that many of your herbs protect against disease and can be used in herbal medicine for your home apothecaries. That, of course, along with companion planting is a subject for another time!

Cane Island’s BBQ Cookoff, Live Music and Family Fun Returns March 12th-13th

It’s BBQ cookoff time in Katy’s Cane Island!

The Katy community of new homes will host its second annual BBQ Cookoff, March 12th -13th, as amateur cooking teams compete in Cane Quarter, 2100 Cane Island Parkway, for cash prizes and trophies in categories of brisket, fajitas, ribs and chicken.

Open to the public, the cookoff fun kicks off with a Friday Night Fajita Cookoff starting at 6 pm with teams competing for $750 in cash prizes. Open to the pubic, crowds also will enjoy live music from Just Cos, cornhole and an axe-throwing competition.

Registration Begins For students, virtual classes are an excellent way to acquire graduation credits and/or expand their learning opportunities.

Last year, over 4,000 students utilized the Katy Virtual School (KVS) program offered by the Katy Independent School District.

KVS launched in 2013 with a primary goal of expanding the learning opportunities for students by offering choice and flexibility for rigorous online courses developed and taught by Katy ISD teachers. On February 1st, KVS began online registration for Summer 2021, Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters.

“KVS provides online learning that offers a flexible, online experience, which helps students achieve their educational goals,” said Susan Richards, Katy ISD Instructional Technology e-Learning Manager. “The virtual model of e-learning is in high

of expectations. Also, family is easily accessible for clarification conversations or a quick pep talk. Having employees/family all on one calendar helps everyone know exactly where they need to be, when and why. This is a real benefit when the unexpected appointment or illness pops up.

We can quickly and accurately expedite changes that will be clearly understood. Family working together as a unit is a site to behold. It is hard to imagine a more solid team. Hurdles are approached with a common goal in mind but from many angles. Successes are celebrated joyfully as a group.

The excitement of reaching for the next level or phase is felt by all. Creating and operating a family business while living in that community is a most rewarding venture.
