Venardos Circus Performs for First Time in Houston Area Venardos Circus (veh-NARR-dos), a Broadway-style animal-free circus, is thrilled to perform for the first time in the greater Houston area at Dry Creek Social Club, located at 3333 Farm to Market 359 in Richmond. There will be 16 shows over two weeks in the intimate red-andwhite striped tent, March 18th to 29th.

This is Venardos Circus’ first stop in a multi-week tour through Texas.

Guests can expect to be transported back in time to the center ring of a centuries-old tradition, but one that has been reinvented for the next generation.

An amazing assortment of performers includes a new cast featuring Guinness World Record holder Brad; juggling and sword-walking Derileisy Ramos; aerialists Manuel and Ilenay Acosta; duo rola bola and duo straps Chase Culp; comedy and Rachel Bell; foot juggling and roman rings. “Broadway” Brian Pollock, 2017 Flea Circus Ringleader, also will be re2017 turning with some amazing new content for the pre-show hour.

Venardos Circus proudly features its own custom-made big-top, a classic red-and-white striped tent, with an intimate feel and limited seating. The circus performers are also the crew in this traveling tour who are completely selfcontained, much like the original circus tradition.

General Admission tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for youth under age 12. Babies in arms are free with a paying adult (24 months and younger). Premium Reserved seating is from $35 to $45.

Planning for a Healthy Future:

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Continues Growth in Facilities, Services, Outreach

L

ooking around the expansive Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus, it’s difficult to imagine that today’s regional medical center began as a small community hospital – with just 22 beds and 160 employees.

That was 1998, when the hospital welcomed its first patients. The population of Fort Bend County was less than half the size it is today, and community health mostly meant serving as a local gateway to the large hospitals in Houston’s famous Texas Medical Center.

But that was then. Today, 22 years later, Houston Methodist Sugar Land encompasses:

• 347 medical, surgical and intensive care beds and 27 operating rooms in three patient towers • Comprehensive centers of excellence including cardiology, neurosciences, oncology, orthopedics, urology and women’s services • Three medical office buildings • Primary care and specialty physician offices located throughout the community, along with an offsite emergency care center in Missouri City More than 2,200 employees and 1,000 specially trained physicians treat patients from across Fort Bend and surrounding areas – from communities including El Campo, Victoria, Eagle Lake and Bay City. In just a little over two decades, Houston Methodist Sugar Land has emerged as a highly specialized regional care facility – treating patients with complex diseases and conditions across a wide range of health care specialties and subspecialties.

People and Resources: A Healing Mix Chris Siebenaler, regional senior vice president and CEO of Houston Methodist Sugar Land, said the hospital has plans to add another 100 beds, new cardiac catheterization labs, an expanded emergency department, additional office space for physicians and more over the next five to seven years.

Still, he explains, the hospital’s growth isn’t just about buildings. “It’s easy to focus on the expansion of our physical campus, because that’s what people see when they drive by,” he said. “But the most important thing we have been able to do here is dramatically increase our capabilities in the core medical specialties that the community needs most. That’s what I’m most proud of. Our physicians have driven our growth since the very beginning.”

Building those competencies required more than just attracting excellent physicians. It also meant the hospital needed the necessary facilities and resources, and of course, highly trained nursing and ancillary staff.

“Today, patients in Fort Bend and surrounding areas don’t need to travel far for specialized, complex care. It’s available right here, because we have the physicians, the staff, the facilities and the technology to diagnose and treat even the most serious cases,” said Siebenaler.

Centers of Excellence Drive Advancements Houston Methodist Sugar Land’s focus on meeting the needs of the community is exemplified by its six centers of excellence, which provide the most advanced medical services required in Fort Bend.

Cardiology The Houston Methodist Heart & Vascular Center at Sugar Land is a nationally accredited chest pain center and the only hospital in Greater Fort Bend to provide 24/7 interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery services.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land performed the first open heart surgery in Fort Bend County in 2007 and has continued to remain the premier institution for cardiac and thoracic services.

In 2019, a cardiovascular surgeon and interventional cardiologist completed the first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure in Fort Bend County.

“TAVR offers significant benefits over traditional valve replacement surgery,” said Marvin D. Atkins Jr., M.D., board-certified cardiothoracic Marvin D. Atkins Jr., M.D.

and vascular surgeon. “It means shorter hospital stays, less trauma to chest muscles and heart tissue, greatly reduced complications and a much quicker recovery time. It’s a major step forward for our patients, and I’m proud to be part of an organization that continues to put patients first.”

Neurosciences The Houston Methodist Neuroscience & Spine Center at Sugar Land provides a multidisciplinary team approach to the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions, including back and neck pain, stroke, headaches and migraines, neuromuscular disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy, sleep disorders, brain and spinal tumors, epilepsy and seizures and more.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land is the only hospital in Fort Bend that routinely performs complex brain and spinal surgeries.

“Our team approach ensures that patients receive the most comprehensive care,” said Larry Tran, M.D., board-certified neurologist and medical director Larry Tran, M.D. of the Houston Methodist Neuroscience & Spine Center at Sugar Land. “Being able to call upon our colleagues in specific subspecialties as needed – as well as having access to state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained operating room staff – enables us to treat complex cases.”

Oncology The Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land is the only facility in Fort Bend that offers comprehensive oncology services onsite in one location – from diagnosis to surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, clinical trials, nurse navigators and ongoing care and support through a robust survivorship program.

“Our oncology team routinely collaborates to ensure each patient receives the best possible care,” said board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist Jorge Darcourt, M.D. “This partnership draws on Jorge Darcourt, M.D. each team member’s expertise to fight cancer in a compassionate, caring and supportive environment.”

The Cancer Center specializes in the treatment of all adults with cancer and is Fort Bend County’s only hospital with American College of Surgeons - Commission on Cancer accreditation.

Orthopedics Athletes and non-athletes alike receive comprehensive care at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Sugar Land with an on-site state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility that offers a combination of strength training, performance enhancement techniques and physical, occupational and aquatic therapy. With the addition of the Houston Methodist Orthopedic Injury Clinic, knowledgeable doctors and staff can quickly evaluate and treat injuries so you can get back to your active life. and those with complex and critical illnesses. And the recent addition of OB hospitalists who are dedicated inpatient OBGYNs for round-the-clock coverage of OB-GYN emergencies brings more peace of mind for patients.

The Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at Sugar Land provides the full continuum of care – from screening through treatment and survivorship – complete with state-of-theart imaging technologies and a calm, comfortable, welcoming environment.

The hospital recently received a three-year accreditation from the National Rosalyn Miller, D.O. Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, demonstrating excellence in leadership, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land will also continue to strive to meet the community’s changing health care needs, adding new services, expanding others and continuing to build both its physician base and its overall capabilities.

As the hospital’s physical footprint expands, so too will its outreach. “Growth doesn’t always have to be about the latest technology or most sophisticated procedure,” said Siebenaler.

“It can mean more accessible primary care, close to where people live and work, or more preventive care and screenings.

We also want to continue to expand our work with agencies that deliver health-related services, so that we can go beyond the hospital’s walls and reach people in the community. These improvements are just as important as adding subspecialties or being able to perform rare procedures.”

Most importantly, as medicine continues to evolve and change, so too will Houston Methodist Sugar Land. “It’s been an amazing journey for all of us,” said Siebenaler. “We’ve made tremendous strides and as we’ve grown, we’ve helped reshape the understanding of what a suburban hospital can be. The sky is the limit for us here, and it’s exciting to think about what we can achieve in the next 20 years.”

High School HOT SHOT Meet Halle Ham

As

a senior at Lamar Consolidated High School, Halle Ham has enjoyed the benefits of a well-rounded curriculum.

Academics, sports and extracurricular activities have kept her busy, engaged and motivated, and she is looking forward to a successful future.

Ham has taken Advanced Placement classes throughout her high school career. She is currently enrolled in two dual credit classes and has been on the Honor Roll for all four years. She received the Mustang Award for the most outstanding student, and for the past three years, she has received the All-Academic, All District award. She was also accepted into the Education Savers Honor Society.

Ham is reflective about her teachers. “There are teachers who I love as people and for their personality and kindness, and there are those who I love for their humor and their honesty – teachers who I love because they have helped me in school and taught me academic and real-life lessons. My coach, who is with me every day of the week, sees me when I am at my best and at my worst. These teachers pick you up when you are down and can also see the real you. They are supportive when you’re on the court or field and know you can do better and when you are not reaching your full potential.

These teachers I respect and do not want to disappoint.”

Ham’s forte is volleyball. She has been a member of the Varsity volleyball team for all four years and first team All-District for three years. She received the Most Valuable Player Award, Team Defensive Player of the Year and All District Defensive Player of the Year for two years in a row.

She also earned the All Area Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Ham has several moral values that she lives by. “Health is the greatest gift, contentment is the greatest wealth, trust is the best relative and a liberated mind is the greatest bliss.

I achieve health and happiness by following these values in life. Anyone can accept and practice the three values of respect, friendship and excellence under any circumstance. There are different kinds of respect: respect for yourself, others, for rules, for life, respect for the environment and many more.

We receive respect when we give respect. Friendship is important in making good and healthy relationships, which are important to success in life.

We can’t do anything alone; we need the support of others. Everyone should know how to make healthy relationships that will last forever.”

Ham uses her values to lead her peers. “I’m able to be a friend and a confidant, but also someone they respect and will listen to. I also get to see the people I have helped grow and become better than they were before.”

Ham will never forget her years at school. “One thing I will treasure is not only the friends and family I have made, but also the teachers and coaches who have changed my life and taught me how to be a better person and athlete. They will always have a special place in my heart.”

In addition to her school commitments, Ham is a member of Future Farmers of America ( FFA) and participated in the Houston and San Antonio Livestock Show. In the fall, Ham will be attending the University of Main at Fort Kent and will be playing volleyball on scholarship. She will major in Zoology and Animal Biology. Congratulations Halle Ham for your talent and respect for your family, peers and teachers. Good luck as you continue to grow as an athlete and person.

4th Annual Art Walk and Motor Madness Set for April 4th Historic Richmond Association (HRA) is proud to partner with downtown merchants to bring the 4th Annual Art Walk and Motor Madness to historic downtown Richmond on Saturday, April 4th, 2020 from 10 am to 4 pm. Several events will take place along the stretch of Morton Street between 2nd and 5th Streets.

Classic car enthusiasts will be able to participate in the Motor Madness car show featured at City Hall on Morton Street between 4th and 5th Streets. A new addition this year to Art Walk and Motor Madness is Bark in the Park.

Encouraging Youth Sports and Their Benefits

ports help shape kids’ lives, but due to funding shortages, some school sports programs are at risk.

Most experts agree physical activity is an essential aspect of youth development that teaches teamwork, builds confidence and fuels academic potential. However, according to a survey of middle school educators engaged with DonorsChoose.org, 6 in 10 feel their middle school athletic programs are barely funded or underfunded. In fact, a lack of funding accounts for 47% of cuts to middle school sports programs, the survey revealed.

A multiyear program known as “Mission Tiger,” launched

by Kellogg, is committed to helping save middle school sports. The initiative started with a $1 million commitment to DonorsChoose.org to fund projects big and small at schools in need. Professional athletes passionate about youth sports, including Olympian Julie Ertz, are teaming up with the program to help underfunded programs. The prosoccer midfielder teamed up with Mission Tiger to help a school inspire its students’ dreams both on and off the field by donating new equipment, including soccer balls, cleats, shin guards and more.

“Growing up, I learned numerous skills from sports, skills that applied not only to athletics but to my everyday life,” Ertz said. “This is one of the many reasons why I joined the Mission Tiger team – we’re not just giving kids the opportunity to play sports, we’re giving kids the opportunity to develop beneficial skills that can positively impact the future of today’s youth.”

American Heart Association Announces its 2020 Wine From The Heart Event

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY

hen the subject of Texas history is discussed, one name stands out among all the other famous historians. His statue proudly stands at Town Square in Sugar Land. His name honors the State Capital, as well as many high schools, colleges, streets and parks throughout Texas. Stephen F. Austin is one of the most prominent founding fathers of the state. He is known for playing a key role in the colonization of Texas, as well as when Texas seceded from Mexico. He was only 27 years-old when he inherited the project of colonizing Texas from his father, Moses, and lived his adult life committed to making this dream come true.

Stephen Fuller Austin was born on November 3, 1793 in Virginia. He was the third child of Moses Austin and Mary Brown. Moses was a businessman and lead mine owner. When Moses lost his fortune in the mining business, he traveled to Texas and secured permission from the Spanish authorities to bring a group of settlers to begin life in the rugged and beautiful land of Texas. Unfortunately, Moses fell ill and died in 1821. His final wish was for his son to complete his settlement project.

When Mexico achieved independence, Austin had to re-negotiate his father’s grant.

Financially broke, he persevered, and by 1830, he succeeded in establishing a thriving colony of mostly Americans, looking for a new way of life.

Austin’s first grant, 58 of the original 300 colonists, settled in the Fort Settlement area, which is now the present-day Fort Bend County. The price per acre was only a few pennies; each settler paid $190 in fees to the state, the land commissioner and the surveyor for the deed. Each settler was granted one labor of 177 acres of farmland and one league consisting of 4,428 acres of pastureland. Families were required to build a permanent structure on the land, be of strong moral character and to be Catholic. Most of the colonists who came from the southern states were veteran farmers and rancher’s intent on growing corn, cotton and raising cattle.

In 1833, Austin went to Mexico City to discuss new demands from the Texas settlers. He sent letters home encouraging the settlers to begin declaring statehood before the approval of the federal government. These letters were intercepted by the Mexico City officials, and Austin was jailed for a year and a half. When he was released, he set out to support Texas, essentially leaving Mexico to become a part of the United States or to declare independence. Not long after his return to Texas, the revolution began. Austin was a hardworking, brilliant man, a skillful colony administrator, and the most influential voice for working things out with Mexico, but he was not a military leader. After attempting to lead the Texas army to San Antonio, he quickly and happily turned the command over to Sam Houston, who was much more suited for the job.

Austin went on to become the Texas envoy to the United States. He traveled to Washington, giving speeches to encourage volunteers to go to Texas and to meet with officials.

On April 21, 1836 at the Battle of San Jacinto, Texas gained independence, and Austin returned home. He was appointed the first Secretary of State by the first President of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston. On December 27, 1836, Austin fell ill with pneumonia and died. In the eyes of the people of Texas, Stephen Fuller Austin was one of their greatest heroes. His insight, commitment and fortitude made Texas one of the most prosperous states in the union.
