emember the days when someone asked, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” Honestly, back then the founders of the family-owned Ideal Carpet and Flooring, Inc. (ICF) thought five years was unimaginable. Now, 20 years later, they are reflecting on their humble beginnings.

The Osteras knew then that they could not do this alone and focused on adding to their team installation professionals who shared their vision for ICF. “Our goal was to create a team of dedicated professionals who were trustworthy, took pride in their work and shared ICF’s dedication to excellence,” said owner Vangie Ostera. And that commitment to the Ostera’s vision continues today as many of ICF’s installers have been with the company since the day their doors opened 20 years ago and are still valued members of the ICF team.

ICF began as many small businesses do with a husband and wife – Vincent and Vangie Ostera – striving to provide for their expanding family. Growing up in the building and construction business, flooring, remodeling and new
As Ideal Carpet and Flooring, Inc. grew in their first few years of business, they quickly added a full-time Operations Officer to their team. Arnold Martinez has overseen the business for fifteen years and brings to the team a background in the industry, a strong attention to detail, exemplary project management skills and resolution, while maintaining a professional and personable manner throughout the process. Later, ICF welcomed an experienced full-time design consultant, Ruben Perez, who has proven to be a customer service asset to their business, along with providing ICF a strong social media presence. Customers routinely comment on how much they appreciate Perez’s attentiveness and personal touch.
Many customers know Martinez and Perez personally and have their numbers saved as direct contacts. Shortly after these additions, ICF welcomed Ricky Gomez as their Compliance, Delivery and Warehouse Manager in a full-time position. Gomez is the backbone to keeping the entire operation organized, uninterrupted and efficient. He is a true master of all things, while always keeping safety in mind. Together, ICF’s team of dedicated, knowledge professionals never fail to meet the needs of customers.

For the past three years, OakBend Medical Center employees have donated to the Seeds of Generosity employee campaign raising more than $396,000. The 2020 was the most successful to date with employee giving exceeding $101,000. This year, 345 employees donated to the campaign and surpassed the $100,000 goal. Development Director, Schell Hammel sent an email to the staff stating “Being the ‘new guy’ in town, I can’t covey how impressed I have been with the family mentality at OakBend. You should all be so very proud of yourselves. Regardless of where you chose for your money to go, you made a difference in someone’s life this year or many lives. That should not go without notice.” This year’s funds will be split between the purchase of Workstations on Wheels (WOWs) that allow nurses to easily get from one room to the next with all of the patient’s pertinent information, and the OakBend Branches program, which will help fund care for the underserved children in our area. Every department that had 100% of the employees participate will be entered into a drawing to win a prize. Fort Bend Museum Groundbreaking Sets the Stage for New $2 Million Renovation Project A groundbreaking ceremony in front of the Fort Bend Museum’s original building was held on Thursday, November 19th, formally kicking off the construction phase of an ambitious $2 million renovation campaign. The project, dubbed “History Rising,” has been in the planning and fundraising stage for the past two years. With Thursday’s groundbreaking, work is now underway to transform the museum’s enduring, but outdated, building. “Our dream has long been to create a smarter, more efficient and creative use of space within the existing building framework,” said Claire Rogers, Executive Director of the Fort Bend History Association (FBHA). “When finished this spring, the outside of the building will match the look of the historic Moore Home next door, and the inside will feature a more modern exhibit space with the flexibility to also serve as an event venue during non-museum hours.” At the groundbreaking event, a number of campaign supporters were on hand, representing a wide range of constituents from the community. This included museum employees, FBHA board members, county leaders, foundation sponsors and longtime area residents. “We are forever grateful to all the residents, businesses and foundations who have supported us in making our dream for a

better museum and a true community resource happen,” said Ana Alicia Acosta, site manager at the museum. “To be able to move forward with a positive project like this during a pandemic is very gratifying.” Local architect Scott Maddux of M6Studios developed plans for the new building and is serving as project manager during the construction phase. Illinois-based Taylor Studios has been contracted to design the revitalized interior exhibit space that will allow the museum to tell an even broader range of history stories with more interactive visitor experiences. Tips for Staying Healthy in the New Year The beginning of a new year represents an opportunity to make resolutions to affect change. Gingerbread: Safe, Affordable Quality Early Childhood Education in Fort Bend County 2020 was a year of many changes and uncertainty, however with the dawning of a New Year, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the safety and quality of the educational programs provided by the Gingerbread Kids Academy, the Gingerbread House Learning Center, and the Gingerbread After-School programs at Arredondo, Bentley, Frost, Hubenak and Hutchison Elementary in the Lamar School District. This year the Gingerbread Kids Academy will celebrate it’s 7 year Anniversary, the Gingerbread AfterSchool Programs will celebrate their 20 year Anniversary and the Gingerbread House Learning Center will celebrate it’s 40 year Anniversary. That type of long term commitment to Early Childhood Education, cannot be matched anywhere else in Fort Bend County. The Gingerbread Kids’ Academy and Gingerbread House Learning Center have developed an environment where children can learn and grow. The programs are designed for children ages eight weeks to 12 years and offer a variety of educational activities throughout the year. Research has shown that in order for a child to be successful in school and life, they must begin with a strong foundation in learning. Gingerbread has designed a curriculum that includes an emphasis on reading, writing, science, math, discovery and exploration, as well as social skills development. The infant and toddler programs focus on the development of both gross and fine motor skills along with basic language skills. The three to five-year-old PreSchool and PreK programs focus on academics, peer relationships and preparation for entry into kindergarten and elementary school. The Gingerbread After School programs, located onsite at Frost, Hutchison, Hubenak, Arredondo and Bentley Elementary, as well as onsite at the Gingerbread Kids’ Academy and Gingerbread House, offer homework assistance, arts, crafts, games and sports and the values based Junior Achievement Program. Mayor-Elect Rebecca Kennelly Haas took the oath of office and was sworn in as the new Mayor of Richmond, Texas November 16th at the City’s regular Commission meeting to begin her three-year term as the eleventh mayor of Richmond. Haas then led the Commission meeting through remainder of the agenda. Rebecca (Becky) Kennelly Haas has been a resident of Richmond for 50+ years and a business owner in the Historic Downtown District for the past seven years. She has been married to Robert Haas for 40 years and together they have raised two daughters, Amanda and Kelly. Haas is a proud direct descendant of one of Stephen F. Austin’s first settlers in Texas, known as the Old 300. She is charter board member and current Chaplain for the Descendants of Austin’s Old Three Hundred organization. Haas is passionate about Texas history with a keen interest in Richmond, Texas history. She is a member of the Fort Bend County Historical Commission, a former member of the Richmond Historical Commission, a member of the Fort Bend County Museum, a board member of the Black Cowboy Museum, a member of the Historic Richmond Association (HRA) and is a Fort Bend Museum Docent. Those who know Haas know she continually advocates for the promotion of the town she loves: Richmond.

Ingredients 1 Package (16 oz) Pillsbury™ Ready To Bake!™ Refrigerated Sugar Cookies (24 cookies) 24 Flat Wooden Sticks with Round Ends 1 Container (1 lb) Vanilla Creamy Ready-to-Spread Frosting Assorted Small Candies, or Candy Sprinkles or Nonpareils, if desired 10 Yards Red Curling Ribbon

Heat oven to 350°F. On work surface, cut each cookie in half, and arrange into V-shape with 3/4 inch space between dough pieces on top, slightly pressing bottom halves together to form V. Place on ungreased cookie sheet 2 inches apart; insert wooden stick into bottom of each, overlapping sticks as necessary. Bake 12 to 16 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheets. Cool completely, about 10 minutes. Spread frosting on one side of each cookie; decorate with candies. Tie 18 inches of red ribbon into bow around each stick next to cookie.
