A Letter to Our Readers Ah, spring. In like a lion, out like a lamb, all that. It’s a relative thing in Central Texas, where a forty-eight hour spring trailer in February can be followed by a forty-degree temperature plunge in a few hours, but it’s still a time of more daylight (clocks forward March 8), a time of growth and hope. Little green thongs (sorry, things—but that’s a typo that’ll be allowed to stand) poke through the soil, hoping they won’t get eaten by birds or an armadillo digging for grubs.

Migratory creatures.

Clad mostly in black, they return from around the globe for the commencement of the annual festival season, seeking sunlight, sights, and sounds so they can record them on their phones and play them back later to see if they had fun.

The Forgotten

Wonder Woman of

Self-Help

lsie Lincoln Benedict.

Recognize her name??

Neither did I, until I found a copy of her 1928 book, Brainology.

Turns out this remarkable woman was the most popular self-help author in the world in the 1920s, seen by over three million people during her lifetime—before radio, television, and, of course, the Internet.

The only person maybe more well known as a speaker was the former athlete turned fiery evangelist preacher Billy Sunday. (I’ll pause while you Google him.) But even his extreme popularity shrank in the 1920s, as Elsie’s grew.

Elsie was an American suffragist leader, international lecturer, and popular author on psychology, self-improvement, and more.

She created and ran the Benedict School of Opportunity, and founded The International Opportunity League, a book and correspondence business.

She traveled the world with her husband, Ralph Benedict, visiting at least fiftyfive countries, and wrote about their adventures in a popular book, Our Trip Around the World.

She was born in 1885.

She was a millionaire by 1920.

This amazing woman wrote numerous books, such as Practical Psychology (1920), and, with her husband, Unlocking the Subconscious (1922), How to Make More Money (1925), and their standout bestseller, How to Analyze People on Sight (1921).

I found Brainology: Understanding, Developing and Training Your Brain, and couldn’t believe it was written in 1928, but was as useful today as it was when it first came out. She was way ahead of the modern fields of positive psychology and neuroscience.

Who was Elsie?

Apparently she was a cutting-edge leader, a petite woman with a commanding presence and charming personality, speaking and writing on what Napoleon Hill and Dale Carnegie and a long list of men would do later.

In many ways, while Elsie was just as upbeat as Hill or Carnegie, and just as subtly metaphysical, she was more practical. She gave people the nuts and bolts of how to succeed by teaching them practical psychology.

Hers was a common sense approach to a happy, healthy, prosperous life. And she championed women’s rights.

She spoke—in the 1920s, remember—on such topics as Sex Psychology, How to Choose a Mate, How to Get Anything You Want, How to Succeed in Business, and more.

In 1922 she told an audience, “Most people use less brains in selecting the person with whom they are to spend their lives than they do in choosing an automobile, a bicycle or a cut of steak. Love isn’t enough; there must also be understanding.”

She made money even during the Great Depression. Her talks (usually free) inspired people. She urged them to think right, take action, and take care of themselves. She also wrote Outwitting the Depression.

She believed in the “work cure,” which was a new way to handle nervousness and hysteria and other psychological problems of the early 1920s.

The idea was to get you to do useful activities, like taking a college class, learning carpentry or music, or running an office.

The “cure” for what ails you was in the “work,” or the doing, of something meaningful.

Instead of disconnecting from life, you re-connected to life.

In 1923, the Oakland Tribune called Elsie “Wonder Woman,” explaining that “…she actually MAKES OVER THE LIVES of those who follow her wonderful, powerful teachings.”

When Elsie was asked, in 1920, how she attracted three thousand people at a time to her talks, with hundreds being turned away due to lack of room, she replied, “Because I talk on the one subject on earth in which every individual is most interested—himself.”

I got so excited discovering Elsie that I went looking for more of her books. I found a pristine 1920 edition of Practical Psychology.

What a treat!

I was impressed at how her clear, direct, conversational writing style communicated practical insights about everything from how to stop worrying and how to build self-confidence, to how to make money.

I (of course) jumped to the How to Make Money chapter, which was the last one in the book.

Knowing all her readers would do what I did, there’s a line in parentheses in that chapter where she says, “You are reading this chapter first!”

Elsie knew people.

While I haven’t seen her use the phrase “Law of Attraction” (yet, as I haven’t read all of her books—yet) she certainly knew the power of the mind to direct action, which attracted results.

In that last chapter in Practical Psychology she writes, “All men and women who have climbed to the top of life’s ladder climbed up mentally first.”

When her husband died in 1941, Elsie withdrew from public life.

She was heartbroken.

She stayed plugged into life by traveling and visiting family.

But her public appearances and books were over.

She died in 1970.

I’m glad I discovered her.

She was one of those pioneers who paved the way for many others, including me and other Law of Attraction authors, by stepping forth in courage to share her message of self-help and self-improvement.

here are a lot of fairly nebulous terms running around in dietary and environmental circles these days. You’ve got your organic, your local, your gluten-free, your GMO-free, and the most nebulous of all— all natural, a refuge for scoundrels hoping to convince consumers they’re eating (or, ahem, reading in this case) something good for them.

The only one of those labels carrying any real legal weight is USDA Organic, but even organic sugar is still, well—sugar, and not all that good for you. Local was the big trend for a while, with even the hombres at Frito-Lay claiming their Fritos were made with local ingredients, until they were called on it and had the huevos to explain that they saw local as more of a state of mind.

As one food writer very succinctly put it, everything’s local somewhere.

The latest catchword is one that a fairly sizeable chunk of consumers said they look for, but a much smaller percentage could actually define—sustainable.

It’s a tricky thing, sustainable.

Does it mean something that lasts, maybe indefinitely, or does it mean something that lasts because it won’t run out— or because it can be renewed? Wait, that would be renewable, wouldn’t it—but then renewable would also be sustainable, since it can be sustained, although sustainable wouldn’t necessarily be renewable, since, umm…

Arrgghh!

Thing is, something can be sustained – made to keep chugging away indefinitely – without doing so by healthy means. Artificial preservatives, irradiation, pesticides, factory farms, even (God help us) GMO’s are, in a sense, ways to maintain a steady supply of food, and the corporate entities creating them market them as such—as sustainable—with a straight face! (Lying with a straight face is a dominant personality trait of corporations.)

The flaw in that line of reasoning is a fatal one. Like mistletoe on a tree, things that grow by such means will eventually kill the host, which segues nicely into…

Austainabilty.

Yep—still another way to bellyache about what’s happening to Austin. That mistletoe’s pretty and you’ll get a kiss standing under it, sure enough, but unless you’re a developer it may be the kiss of death when a dead tree limb falls on you. Austin never built the infrastructure to support this much growth, and it’s way too late to build it now.

Everybody has traffic horror stories, but solutions have been few and far between. One that had to be an April Fool joke gone wrong involves sending traffic into a tunnel under I-35 from the river to 15th St., and turning the land above it into —you guessed it —retail and condo development.

Traffic and a Byzantine parking system is already making it difficult to go anywhere with any ease at any time, which doesn’t exactly bode well for any business that’s not under a condo full of folks with disposable income burning a hole in their pockets.

We’re a working laboratory for what real sustainability has to be – the ability to sustain growth and consumption without draining, poisoning, or otherwise destroying the resources that support it, or the space it occupies.

Dogs and cats living together!

That may take a bit of evolving, maybe even into something like our March cover—a springtime where everything’s familiar but somehow different, in a Rod Serling sort of way. Tulips and carnations growing side by side with huge, exotic white blossoms, giant moths bigger than birds — dogs and cats living together, as Bill Murray shouts out in Ghostbusters.

If this means an extra planet and a couple of rogue moons (all of which suspiciously resemble melons) hovering against a mysterious cream-colored sky (or wallpaper) with a strange spectral image that could be either a housewife changing sheets, Shiva the Destroyer, or a bizarre Shroud of Turin representation of Mickey Mouse—well, so be it. Long as it’s sustainable.

Oh, and those giant moths? Darn good eatin’

Sustainability requires diversity and balance. In your life or business, just like in an ecosystem, “…the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources” is paramount.

Whether you want to make your business more profitable or help your family, work, or relationships flow with more ease and less effort, you have to listen to what your body’s telling you.

Socrates said, “Know thyself.”

He was right.

Cultivating self-awareness is the most important thing you’ll ever do. Recognizing why you do what you do (without using someone else as an excuse) opens up whole new worlds of power for yourself—and everyone around you.

Success comes in cans.

When you realize what beliefs drive you, you have the power to change them. (Yes, you can change beliefs—they’re only thoughts you keep thinking.)

We’ve been handed down, through generations, a vibrational belief that life is hard and requires struggle. While that may have been your experience up until now, it doesn’t have to be that way.

You get to choose what pleases you and makes you happy. You can shift old energy that says, “That’s just the way things are,” and you can create a whole new life you hadn’t dared let yourself imagine.

Who does what?

The key to sustainability is different for everyone. We’re all diverse, and it’s a beautiful system—things I don’t want to do, others really love. Things I really enjoy doing, someone else hates.

Are dental professionals–and their families– the canaries in the mercurryy mine?

by Christina Allen Since 2008, we’ve been in the middle of dismantling old cultural paradigms that no longer serve us, so new ones can come through in 2016. The sun is coming out of a parallel phase of high activity that peaked in 2013. Every eleven years, the amounts of solar activity—the number of large solar flares that happen over a given year—ramps up to markedly higher levels, and then back down.

Solar flares are bursts of light and electromagnetically charged plasma that erupt from the sun’s surface and blast out into space. If the sunspot emitting the burst is pointed toward Earth, we are in the direct line of fire for receiving this electromagnetic radiation. Most of us are familiar with the Aurora Borealis – these are created by those blasts from the sun interacting with the Earth’s magnetosphere.

When large Earth-directed solar flares arrive at the planet, they come as waves of charged electromagnetic flux that can wreak havoc with our electrical instruments. There are often electrical blackouts, glitches in our electronic devices, and ham radio operators picking up heavy static on their lines; it’s also common to have geomagnetic storms after a solar event.

Interestingly, there’s a rise in the number of earthquakes that follow the emission of a large solar flare as well.

Which way’s south?

Research suggests the electromagnetic blasts contribute to breaking down the grids that hold the tectonic plates across the Earth’s surface in place. Further, it’s also thought that this peak in solar activity is contributing toward a reversal of the magnetic poles. Many animals that depend upon the magnetic fields to migrate are ending up in different places for their winters these days, and even airports have had to refine their maps to account for shifts in their instrument readings.

The indigenous say there are downloads in these blasts that are aligning us, personally, with whom we are becoming.

They are reprograming our energy fields, our souls, and our physical bodies, just they are restructuring the planet.

Because we, too, are electrical beings, we are going through great shifts at every level as well.

Our entire body operation is based on the transport of ions, or charged particles, across our cell membranes.

Whenever an ion moves we have a current, so our bodies are filled with tiny little electromagnetic currents that are sensitive to electromagnetic flux. Our nerve cells also transport larger electrical impulses to each other, giving feedback and information about the condition of our bodies. Finally, the heart is a giant rhythm machine driven by electronic cell transport. All these electrical systems in our body are affected by solar flares as well.

Sensitives and SuperCeptors.

Our bodies react to these unexpected environmental stimuli by initiating a stress response. SB 66: THE EPIPEN LAW A proposed Texas Food Allergy Law

by Nerissa Oden A proposed food allergy-related bill in Texas will be considered by the Senate Committee on Education in March.

If the bill survives the committee and becomes law, it will aid in life-saving response options for an increasing number of children who experience their first severe allergic reaction while at school.

Severe food allergies often involve anaphylaxis, a lifethreatening condition most often thwarted by an injected dose of adrenaline—also known as epinephrine auto injector, or Epipen. An injection of adrenaline works best when anaphylaxis symptoms first begin; a longer wait time can lead to permanent disability, even death.

Insect bites and stings can also bring on severe reactions, including anaphylaxis. In fact, Senate Bill 66 is named the “Cameron Espinosa Act” after a student who died from anaphylaxis brought on by an undiagnosed severe allergy to fire ants while participating in football practice at school.

Texas schools already accommodate students who have an epinephrine auto injector prescription by housing each student-provided medicine safely on campus in the event that the child experiences a severe allergic attack while in school.

But schools and teachers are prohibited from using prescribed medicine for one child to help another child without a prescription – even if the undiagnosed child exhibits severe anaphylaxis allergy symptoms, or becomes unresponsive.

Senate Bill 66 would require all public schools and openenrollment charter schools to follow new guidelines to be established by the Department of State Health Services for the possession, administration, and disposal of epinephrine autoinjectors, which will be administered by a school employee who is authorized and trained to aid any an individual who is reasonably believed to be experiencing anaphylaxis on the campus, or at an off-campus school-sanctioned event.

by Michael Abedin In the 1930’s, English physician Edward Bach created a series of thirty-eight flower essences, prepared from plants found in his native England, to address underlying mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of physical disease.

This ongoing series describes those remedies.

The proof is in the pudding, it’s often said, but the real saying is that the proof of the pudding is in the eating—and the proof of a natural remedy is in the taking of it. The flower remedies created by Edward Bach can be used in one (or a combination) of three basic ways:

Acute remedies.

These are used for everyday situations that cause a strong reaction, one that may or may not be a part of your usual mental or emotional makeup. Pick the remedy for whatever’s going on, and take it for as long as you need it.

If, for instance, you have to give a presentation in front of a group of people—a class, speech, or business proposal—and you suddenly find yourself losing all confidence in your ability to do it, Larch is the remedy for lack of confidence. A shot of it should fix you right up, maybe with a little Mimulus, the remedy for identifiable fears if your brain starts telling you you’ll trip or pass out or leave your fly unzipped.

The most well known acute remedy is Rescue Remedy (actually a combination of five remedies), for immediate, acute stress of any kind. Rescue Remedy has been known to stop complete emotional meltdowns in mid-sentence (or mid-tirade), and there should probably be some kind of law requiring everybody to carry it around.

Constitutional remedies.

Back to that lack of confidence—if it’s an ongoing thing that’s caused you problems all your life, keeping you stuck because you don’t think you have what it takes, Larch becomes what’s called a constitutional remedy in traditional homeopathy, one that works with your underlying makeup.

Constitutional remedies work best over a period of time – say, thirty days – and usually along with other supportive constitutional or acute remedies, in your own personal blend.

Catalytic remedies.

Two (sometimes three) of Bach’s remedies can also function as catalysts, to surface a symptom picture and see what constitutional or acute remedies should be used. They’re similar to what traditional homeopathy calls a polycrest, a remedy with multiple, broad-range uses, since they can also be used as an acute or constitutional remedy for a specific symptom picture—or all of the above, at the same time.

You want to reach for your catalytic remedies when it’s tough to figure out exactly which ones to use, or when so many are indicated it’s hard to narrow it down to the best ones. Bach identified them as useful for older or rigid people, so set in their ways and out of touch with their emotions that it’s difficult to get a read on a symptom picture—think of them as breaking through the crust remedies.

Holly, for instance, is usually the remedy for anger, jealousy, and a desire for revenge. It can also be used, however, to dig up a symptom profile even when those emotions don’t seem to be an issue, and Bach recommended using it that way with outgoing, active personality types. (The catalytic effect kicks in best when you use it by itself, or with one or two other remedies.)

An important point—Bach’s essences are prepared using homeopathic methods, reducing the original substance down to a sub-molecular level. They are not, however, considered true homeopathic remedies in the literal sense, and don’t follow the laws and restrictions of traditional homeopathy —no caffeine, no peppermint, don’t eat or drink for twenty minutes before or after, and so on. You can take your remedy, immediately eat a big meal, drink a cup of coffee, suck on a peppermint, and it won’t hurt the working of them one bit.

You might give a lot of strict homeopaths (and some Bach practitioners) a fit if you tell them that, but just slip a little Rescue Remedy in their chamomile tea when they’re not looking.

The strange and wonderful saga of Dr. Bronner and his Magic Soap

Absolute cleanliness is Godliness! Who else but God gave man Love that can spark mere dust to life! Poetry, uniting All-One! All brave! All life! Who else but God! Who else, indeed? If you recognize that bit of hyperbole, you’ve read a soap bottle or two in your day. Along with freewheeling references to Einstein, Essenes, and the carpenter Jesus, it’s the work of the mad genius Dr. Bronner, whose peppermint liquid soap – its blue label completely covered with streams of spiritual consciousness in teeny little print – became as much a symbol of the Sixties as peace signs and VW buses.

Born in Germany to a Jewish soap making family, Emanuel Heilbronner came to this country in 1929, changed his name when the Nazis rose to power, and tried to convince his parents to leave Germany. The last he heard from them before they were shipped to camps was a postcard that read, “You were right.”

He was right about a lot of things.

Bronner got tossed into a loony bin in 1947 for extolling his “Moral ABC’s” a tad too vehemently, but escaped out a window and headed straight to LA – where, he said, he fit right in. Like Israel, his first batch of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap was created in 1948.

True to its Sixties roots, Dr. Bronner’s has knocked heads with the feds over organic body care standards, and over restrictive DEA hemp regulations, winning on February 6, 2004 – Bob Marley’s birthday. It’s donated millions to help the Organic Consumer Association fight for GMO labeling, and is completely certified as organic and Fair Trade.

Bronner passed in 1997, but stayed crazy all his life.

Sporting his trademark black-as-ink shades and looking like he left his spacecraft double-parked at the curb, he recorded a surprisingly good reggae version of – get ready – the Rudyard Kipling poem “If” in 1986, backed by Jamaica’s finest.

Bronner’s son Jim passed a little over a year after his father, and Uncle Ralph, as his second son was known in the company, left the planet to join them in February of this year.

The legacy is safe with grandsons David and Michael, though – shown on the company website dressed as, respectively, a samurai and a ninja.

Zach Theatre, April 8-May 10

If you arrived in Austin about five minutes ago, there are things you should know.

For starters, South Lamar used to have lots of buildings other than condos and hipster bars. (No, really.) Lady Bird Lake used to be Town Lake, but it’s actually the Colorado River, and everybody hereabouts pretty much calls it “the river” – unless you’re going to walk around it on the hike ‘n bike trail, in which case it’s Town Lake since you technically can’t walk around a river.

Got all that?

Just south of the river on Lamar, the Austin Civic Theatre opened in 1933, and was renamed Zachary Scott Theatre in 1968, after a local boy who became a Hollywood film star in the Forties and Fifties playing characters who operated outside the law. Spiffed up a few years ago, it’s now known simply as Zach.

We used to have plenty of larger-than-life characters around here tiptoeing outside the law, and some seeing that laws got made. One of them was Lyndon Baines Johnson.

LBJ was born about fifty miles west of Austin in Stonewall, down the road from Johnson City, named after his uncle. He became president on November 22, 1963 after John Kennedy was shot in Dallas, whomped Barry Goldwater in the ‘64 elections, and took that as a mandate to take on a strange cause for a southern politician – civil rights.

“All the Way with LBJ” was Johnson’s 1964 campaign slogan, inspiring the name of the 2014 Tony Award®-winning play profiling his first year in office. Zach’s production features twenty actors depicting the real-life drama around the 1965 Voting Rights Act – Johnson, Martin Luther King, Jr., J. Edgar Hoover, George Wallace, Hubert Humphrey, and Lady Bird.

The 2014 film Selma took flak for playing fast and loose with the facts, depicting Johnson as secretly opposed to civil rights legislation and undermining King, but historians who were there credit LBJ with using all his good ol’ boy charm and arm-twisting political skills to get the Act passed.

Like a lot of Texas legends, LBJ was a man of mythical stature. Vietnam brought him down (he turned down the 1968 nomination), but the 1965 Voting Rights Act may have been his finest hour.
