A Letter to Our Readers If August in Austin is hot enough to get you back to church on Sundays because it’s a taste of what hell might be like, September could be purgatory – a place to pay dues until you move to cooler climes. (If for you think either hell or purgatory runs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, you’ll have to come up with your own analogy.)

September’s a perfect time to devote an issue to natural fitness, in all its manifestations. It’s usually just cool enough, especially with El Niño Grande coming, to get you back out to exercise – or at least back out to get to a place to exercise, after negotiating Austin traffic. (Which is where you spend eternity if you’re really bad.)

And that’s a fine segue back into the metaphysics of September.

September can also be heaven, especially if you’re of the NFLian faith, since it’s kickoff time for regular services of the First Church of the Sainted Dallas Cowboys. Prayer, hallelujahs, the occasional weeping and gnashing of teeth – what more could you ask for on a Sunday?

“Let me make you a paper weight.”

It was Dennis Rogers speaking. Many consider him the world’s strongest man. Celebrities call on him for advice on performing and getting strong. He’s performed over 2,600 shows featuring feats of strength.

We met over lunch. He wanted to give me a gift, or rather make one for me.

He wrapped his hands in a thin leather protective covering, and then began to bend a wrench before my eyes.

I couldn’t comprehend how he did it. I had felt the wrench beforehand and it was a genuine metal tool, heavy and solid.

But it bent like it was warm butter.

By now the kitchen staff had seen the bent wrench and saw the small lunch crowd forming around Dennis and me.

“Would you like me to roll a frying pan for you?” Dennis asked the cook and staff. “It can be a souvenir you can hang in the kitchen.”

They all agreed, their eyes bugged out and waiting.

Dennis pulled out a frying pan, put his fingers over the edge, and slowly began to roll it like it was a tortilla. It was astonishing to see. It was surreal. Dennis was clearly focused, breathing hard, putting his life force into his efforts.

He handed the completely rolled up pan, now of no practical use, to the chef.

None of us could believe it.

I had seen strongmen and feats of strength before. When I was in Russia, a man billed as the world’s strongest man (I guess there can be more than one) bent a heavy nail before my eyes. He, like Dennis, used sheer power and intense focus to get it done.

I admired it. I could see applications in other areas of life. I wanted to know more.

The origin of strongman feats of strength goes back to prehistory, maybe even back to cavemen picking up boulders and protecting their caves.

The first of the recorded characters was probably Milo of Croton, an ancient Greek wrestler, circa 558 B.C. His training was simple.

Find a young calf, lift it.

Next day, find a heavier calf, lift it.

Next day, find a heavier calf or cow, lift it.

It was an early exercise routine today named progressive overload. But that’s the ancient Greeks for you. They didn’t name it. They just knew the process made them stronger.

But feats of strength were performed throughout history, right into the circus and on the vaudeville stage throughout the 1800s.

As time went on, strength displays were broken into categories, such as power lifting and bodybuilding.

I admire men and women who use intention and strength to accomplish something the rest of us might consider virtually impossible.

Julie Havelka, a competitive female strength athlete, wrote Personal Best: How to Train for the Sport of Strongman.

She reveals the intensity of mind and muscle needed to accomplish these feats. Lifting huge stones, tractor tires, or small horses isn’t uncommon.

Eugen Sandow (1867-1925), considered the father of modern bodybuilding, began his career as a sideshow strongman. The list of colorful characters goes on, and is alive today in people like Dennis Rogers.

Joe Holtum, in the 1800s, would catch a cannon ball in his bare hands. He lost a finger or two along the way, but always drew a crowd.

And I once saw a clipping about Joe Vitale – yes, the same name as mine – a circus performer in New York City in the 1900s who lifted over 500 pounds – with his teeth.

Some of these early strongmen, most notably Joseph Greenstein, whose stage name was The Mighty Atom, also pursued strength as a means of mental and spiritual development.

They want to impress themselves as well as you. This is one reason I’m attending Dennis Rogers and Dave Whitley’s Oldetime Strongman University Training in Austin September 19-20.

I want to learn what it takes to be a modern walking Hercules, able to bend nails, wrenches, frying pans, or your car keys, but doing it as a type of meditation. Using it to stretch myself into bigger possibility thinking.

Dennis told me, “The area of strength that David Whitley and I will be teaching is the artistic display of physical strength. I say this because you must certainly build your body, particularly your core and grip, but it also requires a creative mind and artful presentation.

“It’s the art of the old vaudeville and Coney Island strength stars. Men like Eugen Sandow, Siegmund Brietbart, Warren Lincoln Travis, and The Mighty Atom.”

According to author and strength historian David Willoughby, “It was Sandow who raised feats of strength out of the grunt-and groan category and made them spectacular and entertaining.”

But it’s not about the bent item – it’s about learning to use your mind and muscle to get results.

That’s priceless anywhere. David Whitley said, “It’s the bodily expression of the mind’s power.”

Watch your thoughts.

And that’s why I trained with the “old school” bodybuilders, like multiple Olympia winner Frank Zane, who advised me, “Watch your thoughts. Most people let their mind talk themselves out of what their muscle can do. Push past the voice.”

Authentic strongmen and strongwomen don’t use magic tricks to get their results.

And Steve Reeves, the legendary early bodybuilder who played Hercules in the original movie, said he would visualize his muscles growing as he worked them. Arnold does the same thing. It’s mind over muscle.

Dennis Rogers once told me that most people give up in trying to bend a wrench right before the wrench is going to bend.

“They let their minds talk themselves out of what they can achieve,” he explained.

David Whitley said, “We tend to think of the physical first, but being strong is something that goes beyond the physical performance of feats and encompasses the entire being. It is a means of discovering, unifying, and expressing the True Self.

“The essence of being an old-time strong man in my opinion is recognizing and acknowledging the infinite potential of the human mind. The ability to bend steel, rip decks of cards, and perform similar feats has its roots in the same place as every great invention or work of art we’ve ever seen – the Imagination.”

You can see how relevant this is to all aspects of life, not just in the gym or on stage. It’s about using your mind and body to achieve your intentions. It’s about training in a way to exceed your own “personal best” and proving to yourself and others that virtually nothing is impossible.

It’s become the unofficial holistic motto, almost a single word—the Holy Trinity of the MASH crowd, those concerned with matters of a Metaphysical, Alternative, Spiritual, and Holistic nature. (It’s even on the cover of a fine natural magazine every month, right there below the official title.)

Each part of the triangle needs maintenance from time to time to stay in balance, and the one that gets shorted by MASHers, often as not, is the first one on the list. In alternative approaches to treatment, the mantra is that symptomology in the body is the last stage of disease rather than the first, after something in the realm of mind and spirit has gone awry.

True enough, but that’s a tricky thing. Neglect the body, and you can wind up exiting it—and it may not be pretty.

Shrinks and preachers.

Western medical technology is adept at fixing damage to bodies, leaving mind and spirit to shrinks and preachers. This is a good thing when you’re dealing with urgent repairs —if you walk in carrying a body part that needs to be reattached, dealing with mind and spirit probably oughta wait.

“Pardon me, doctor, but could you put this arm back on for me?”

“Certainly, sir, as soon as we determine what underlying mental, emotional, and spiritual issues caused you to have it lopped off.”

Not really what you want to hear right then, huh?

The one thing that can tweak even really holistic, spiritual individuals also shouldn’t be ignored—staying in shape. Not keeping your body in good working order, though, is a way of punishing it.

Holistic and spiritual folk deciding to be mentally and emotionally fine with their bodies and not put any time into exercising them has become a stereotype, as much so as jocks loading up on chemical supplements and flocking to the latest bizarre, Xtreme, no pain-no gain workout craze.

Hercules and hunter gatherers.

Hunter-gatherers don’t worry about fitness, since their lives are based on the steady use of energy to travel long distances, with short, intense bursts of energy to hunt (or run from) prey—the way the human body’s designed to work. Early Olympic runners from tribal societies had to have the idea of running as fast as possible to win a race against another guy explained to them, since it was a new concept.

Natural fitness is what it sounds like—keep the body healthy and hone its abilities, without hurting it with drugs or crazy workouts. Steve Reeves, who rose to stardom as Mr. Universe and as Hercules in Fifties and Sixties flicks, adamantly opposed drugs in bodybuilding.

He loved natural techniques, creating Powerwalking later in his life based on the steady gait of Morgan horses he raised.

Blindfolded Israeli Jujitsu.

The roots of natural fitness are connected, and many of them evolved from or alongside warrior arts. The collection of Chinese martial arts styles known colloquially as kung fu stemmed from physical meditation exercises designed by the Indian monk Bodhidharma, to whip monks at the Shaolin Temple back into shape for long periods of Zen meditation.

True strength is a constantly shifting balance of internal and external forces, best cultivated by doing things that feel good. If Blindfolded Israeli Jujitsu on Mountain Bikes in Urban Alleys in the Rain is what floats your boat, go for it—but if you measure your success by how much you get hurt, you might want to take a look at that.

Punishing yourself, whether with excess or denial, doesn’t do your body, mind, or spirit any good—and it sure ain’t natural.

Can it survive on calcium alone?

by Dr. Melissa Miskell There are quite a few patients concerned about bone health, particularly those over the age of fifty. It’s recommended that most women start getting bone density testing (a DEXA scan) at that age, after checking with their primary care doctor or OB/GYN. There are three levels of bone density seen on the scan.

Healthy bone density – no bone loss on your DEXA— is your goal. Osteopenia is mild bone loss, followed by osteoporosis, a more severe amount. Of course, having any bone loss, especially osteoporosis, increases your risk of a fracture as you age.

The first question patients normally ask is, “How much calcium should I be taking?� The answer is that amounts vary according to the patient, and you should not be taking only calcium. The first question you should really be asking is— what is bone made of?

Bone is composed of several calcium-based minerals and collagen, which means if you’re going to take a supplement to support your bones, you actually need to take multiple supplements.

OLDTIME STRONGMEN, SHAOLIN MONKS

by Matthew Fuhrmann The art of the Oldtime Strongman dates way back. You can easily find recorded feats of strength in the 1920s and earlier, but long before that, there were the monks of the Shaolin Temple.

Watch a Shaolin monk train (or nowadays, perform) and you’ll see a feat of strength or two. This isn’t by coincidence.

Kung fu literally translates to “hard work over time.” Over time, through gradual steps and consistent practice, they attained a high level of skill.

How do Shaolin techniques relate to the Oldtime Strongman?

Look into them—even better, train in them—and you’ll see many similarities, not just between the arts of the Oldtime Strongman and kung fu, but between many arts and styles of practice.

Kung fu has deep roots, heavily based on yoga—and many of the physical aspects of yoga are rooted to natural childhood development. In Functional Movement, when we hit RESET on the nervous system, you find movements that go back to childhood development, yoga, even primal movement patterns. It’s all interrelated—some old texts and manuals even show monks training with barbells and kettlebells.

There are also practices that build better cellular communication—the ability to fully contract and completely relax a muscle or group of muscles at will, strengthen the tendons, highly oxygenate the body, and flush out toxins. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, this was called Qi-flexing, accomplished with precise breathing techniques and mental focus followed by consistent practice—a discipline much like qigong.

When you take this type of training to higher levels, you get to big feats of strength, with people like Dennis Rogers stopping planes from takeoff by holding onto them, bending wrenches, putting nails through wood with his hand, rolling up frying pans.

You get to what seems to be superhuman strength.

If you start with the internal aspect, you can change your focus from simply feeling the burn and getting a good workout to developing organs, tendons, control of body weight, and strong connections—and if you do that before moving to the weights, you can find what it really means to build strength from the inside out.

Giving the Hero a Rest

by Christina Allen le en n We were all raised i to believe in the Hero, a caped man, woman (or even a dog) who swoops in to save the day. We see strength and altruism in this archetype, and we want to emulate it.

Every kid has stuffed a towel in their shirt and run around the living room, jumping off chairs in an attempt to fly like Superman. We pretend to have superpower strengths as we slay the most daunting of monsters. As we grow up, many of us continue to play out these roles in our adult lives.

Men, especially, have traditionally been charged with the task of being the hero of their families. They’ve been the go-to person to fix all that goes awry in the household, and until relatively recently have provided the lion’s share of the income. They’ve kept the roof from leaking, the cupboards full, and they’ve protected the premises from intruders.

We’ve asked them to be our heroes, and we’ve asked them to be our warriors.

These roles, however, demand a certain amount of emotional distance. A hero doesn’t cry, and someone sensitive to another’s pain does not a good warrior make. In fact, we’ve trained our young boys to deny their feelings, so they can step up and “be a man.”

There is no analogous role for a woman. There are traits we expect a woman to have, but no equivalent pressure to “be a woman.” Many women in our culture even choose to adapt themselves to these same standards, because they’re so highly emphasized.

This external cloak of manhood makes many feel as if their value rests outside themselves in the tasks of doing and fixing, instead of internally, in the strength of being.

Unfortunately, when we ask someone to negate feelings and intuition to identify with an ideal, they lose their internal compass and connection to their true selves. They become a two-dimensional object, rather than a three-dimensional person.

Further, teaching our boys to objectify themselves as men teaches them to objectify others. Our subsequent relationships become wooden and emotionally stilted.

While there’s a time and place for Heroism, it’s not in our intimate relationships. When the Hero shows up, he’s come to save the day. Most people don’t want to be saved, however – they want to be heard and supported.

Slaying dragons.

When we step into the Hero role and see something as needing to be fixed, we separate ourselves from the other person, focusing on their problem. Instead of creating closeness, this creates distance and even a power differential, for the Hero must rise above the sufferer – to save them.

Men and women both do this to each other, and many relationships get stuck in this dynamic. No one wants to share their vulnerabilities, only to be perceived as broken. They want to feel supported in moving through their stuff.

If we want authentic relationships, we must honor vulnerability, intuition, and feelings first. We want to hone our authenticity and sensitivity, knowing that anything else is just a role we play to get things done, not our true identity.

It’s important to be strong, capable, and fearless when we have dragons to slay at the office, to be sure – but the Hero, or Warrior, is a solitary, singular and even adversarial role. Implicit within it is Me vs. Them – and to commune with another person from this place invites conflict and distance. True soul connections require us to be present and vulnerable. We must be able to slip these roles on when needed, and then take them off.

We must be able to pull the cape out of our shirts and reach for our comfortable slippers when we get home, knowing we can save the day again tomorrow.

The Heartwakers Club

Open to Jealousy The Heartwakers Club, with Zaeli “Wow, I want that – but I can’t. I’d be too jealous.”

This is the most common response after explaining my take on open relationships. The assumption is we should avoid jealousy because it’s unpleasant and therefore bad – butt monogamy doesn’t immunize a relationship from jealousy, and often it causes people to suppress the feeling in secret while acting out in other ways.

Instead, try thinking of jealousy the way you think of physical discomfort – it’s not something to seek out, but neither is necessarily bad. Pain signals something important is happening and you need to pay attention. Maybe a change is warranted, or maybe you just need some soothing. Either way,, you’re invited to take a moment and survey your well-being.

How? Take a closer look at those jealous feelings – they’re not all the same.

When you experience jealousy, you feel it in your body, typically a tightening in the gut, heart, and throat. Your mind may race, unleashing a dizzying storm of negative thoughts – inverting the sensation of love, an opening of the self that allows merger between bodies and souls. Most people try to escape this unpleasantness by eliminating the trigger, but that misses a valuable chance to notice what those triggers are signaling.

Real or hypothetical harm.

Let’s say your partner has begun spending time with a new person of interest and you feel jealous. Real harm can happen if you are no longer getting the quality time together you need as a couple, or if poor communication leaves you feeling left out and neglected.

These concerns are legitimate! Don’t beat them down or feel bad for having them. Ask your partner to address them with you, fine-tuning this transition as a team.

On the other hand, hypothetical harm is not a result of needs going unmet, but an anxiety they might. This can result from comparing yourself to your partner’s new flame, a habit that signals insecurity.

You can work on this! Dedicate time to feeling precious and whole. Breathe deeply, affirm that neither your lover, your accomplishments, nor your physique determines your identity.

If you feel strongly some aspect of you is inadequate, give it extra attention. In time, feelings of inferiority will melt away.

Likewise, if comparisons tempt you to feel superior, focus your meditation on growing compassion and solidarity with all other beings, including this person who scares you. Release the myth you are meant to be everything to your partner, and celebrate the divine variety of humans here to love.

Those two triggers arise from personal intuition, deserving respect and response. The third kind comes from a different source I call non-native feelings, aka social conditioning. It’s the perspective of society you internalized before you were mature enough to critique it, the voice in your head saying, “But what will people think?” It’s fine to ask that – after all, we’re social animals and our reputation has real impact – but to respond appropriately, you must recognize it as an external concern.

This is easier said than done.

Jealousy inspired by non-native feelings is just as visceral as the rest. To work with it, recondition your body not to panic while you weigh the relevance of outside opinions. Breathe deeply, visualizing yourself as an explorer on the unmapped terrain of your unique life.

No one has been here before. No one knows it better than you. Observe the surroundings with curiosity and excitement, knowing you are ultimately safe. This allows genuine feelings to surface calmly and clearly in your heart.

All shadow work requires practice and up-front admissions that you – and your partner(s) – will stumble. But with faith, patience, and technique, you can discover new levels of growth and greater intimacy.

Here’s a hint – it’s the most visible part, probably the one most connected to your mental and emotional state.

Skull? Nope, sorry. Tried that the first time.

Okay, a couple more hints. Five letters, and it’s the one that replaces itself from childhood to adult life, as in baby _____ and permanent _____.

If you say skull again – well, you may be right.

Bingo! Your teeth don’t really have quite the same mineral makeup as bone, but they’re technically part of the skeletal system. The enamel covering them is the hardest substance in the human body, and they’re the part of your skeleton you present to the world every time you smile, speak, yawn, or otherwise open your mouth to communicate.

Unless you’re a shark (or, as one stand-up comic suggested, Jessica Simpson) and have about forty-seven rows of teeth that are almost immediately replaceable if you lose one, you get two sets of natural teeth. The baby teeth are considered disposable in return for a quick bit of cash from the Tooth Fairy, but their health and alignment set the tone for the health and alignment of your adult teeth, and your future dental health.

Biological dentist Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health goes to special pains to remove as much pain as possible from dental work for kids (and adults), using a drill-free, pain-free air abrasion technique to remove decayed enamel. If teeth are out of whack, the surrounding soft tissue is probably at the root of the problem, so to speak.

Braces can guide teeth back into alignment, but besides the obvious drawbacks of discomfort and embarrassment (especially since they often make their appearance at about

People on the table received very subtle touches, and their bodies soon started moving in wave-like motions. It was a hard concept to grasp, with pre-conceptions and experiences of what chiropractic adjustments should look like.

While curious about the technique, I dismissed it as being too different, too weird – but life had other plans, and I got to experience it myself. My first time on the table, there were no cracking sounds or immediate relief in any area. Instead, I was surprised by a sudden synchronization of breath and heartbeat. Tension in the spine decreased, becoming more flexible with time.

How do you measure those types of changes? They’re unquantifiable, quite different than what our health system quantifies with tables and numbers.

Restorative and Reorganizational Healing.

James Van Praagh, Survival Evidence Medium, Sept. 25-26 Few people have done more to bring the notion of communicating with the dead into the awareness of popular culture than psychic pioneer James Van Praagh, who refers to what he does as being a “survival evidence medium” – someone whose messages from the spirit realms are evidential proof of life after death.

He’s since made the rounds from Oprah to Dr. Phil, and co-produced a prime-time CBS series based on his work – Ghost Whisperer with Jennifer Love Hewitt, who helped spirits tie up loose ends so they could move on to their next destination.

CBS also developed one of its most popular mini-series based on his life and times, Living with the Dead, in which Ted Danson played Van Praagh. (Good choice – Sam the bartender would already know everybody’s name.)

Navigating the Snapback

by Deborah Antich Here’s a question you’ve asked yourself, although maybe not in the same words. How do you navigate the snapback?

You may not know it, but you’ve experienced the snapback. Life’s going great, you’re rolling along, loving it, hitting on all cylinders. Everyone you meet has a smile, you’re listening to your intuition, trusting your instincts, it feels great, then – a snapback. That annoying little voice of reason pops up and says, “This can’t be real. You aren’t actually falling for this pie in the sky BS – are you? Get back to the real world.”

And you stop.

Midstream, midstride, asking – is this for real?

Yes – if you want it to be, if you believe, and stick with that feeling saying this is who I am instead of the voice of reason.
