And if they can’t, they just proved Napoleon Hill right.

Hill said, “Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve,” not “Whatever your mind can make up, even though you don’t really believe it and it’s not really possible, it can achieve.”

Big difference.

And please note that Hill said you can achieve it, not you will achieve it.

He wisely left room for the possibility of you not actually attracting what you “conceive and believe.”

He knew you still had to work all steps, including taking action. His quote wasn’t just about conceiving and believing.

He said there were at least sixteen laws, remember.

He wrote about them in such books as Laws of Success and, of course, Think and Grow Rich.

The ridicule people give the Law of Attraction or Napoleon Hill is a reflection of their own belief system – only they rarely see it.

I remember being in Russia at one of many book signings and meet and greets. An elderly gentleman in one audience said, “I really want to believe in this Law of Attraction, but the skeptics make a good case against it.”

“Have you ever noticed that the skeptics seem to hang out together,” I began, “and the Law of Attraction positive thinkers seem to gather together?”

He smiled, nodding, as it dawned on him what I was saying.

“Everyone is living the Law of Attraction,” I explained, “but some know it consciously and others don’t. You’re free to believe what you like, and you’ll attract whatever evidence you need to support your belief, even when it’s illogical to others.

That’s the Law of Attraction.”

Remember, you get what you really believe, not what you want to believe.

In other words, when you examine your own statements, you might see the twisted logic behind them.

But like the person who posted the opening line, you probably won’t see the fallacy of your thinking without someone there to lovingly point it out to you. This is why it’s so important to have a coach.

A coach can listen to you speak, reflect back to you the very beliefs you won’t even hear yourself saying, and help you question any beliefs that don’t serve you.

For example, the person who was poking holes at Napoleon Hill’s statement probably didn’t realize they weren’t being logical, or even accurate.

Arguing for limitations seems silly to me.

Why argue against goals, success, visualization, positive thinking and the like? Why not argue for them?

After all, the whole point is to help you achieve success.

Why not find ways to prove Napoleon Hill right?

Hill also wrote, “Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.”

Anyone who tries to dismiss the positive and encouraging words of Hill is speaking without thinking. More than that, they are raining on the hopes and dreams of other people.

That isn’t wise, kind, loving, or useful. As Mark Twain said, “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.

Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”

Napoleon Hill believed in you.

So do I. Go for your dreams.

PS – For the record, I can walk on water. I’ve done it numerous times, usually in Ohio, usually during the winter months. We called it ice.

This is a wonderful example of illogical thinking.

Does the person really think they can walk on water?

Can they really imagine it?

h, Mary. Starting with the archangel Gabriel dropping

by Nazareth to give Joseph’s wife the news, your name threads its way through the New Testament. A woman at a well, at a wedding party, with a jar of oil to wash the feet of God’s son – somehow, all these became one woman whose name, even now, whispers of ancient mysteries.

Mary, the Magdalene.

Mary Magdalene was the only one to stand by Jesus when the rest of the Apostles had fled, and was the first one to… wait – the rest of the Apostles?

Yep. In spite of the bad rap she’s gotten over the years, Magdalene was said to be the truest of the Apostles. She stood her ground, unafraid, when the Romans came. Both the Hebrew and Aramaic variations of Magdalene, in fact, translate to a tower, a fortress, a high place of strength.

So how did she go from being Jesus’ right hand, um, woman to being known as a girl who got around, a woman of easy virtue – a ‘ho? You can thank Pope Gregory for that.

Greg, it seems, was a man of means who tossed it all aside and became a monk and a penitent, to pay for his sins. As an excellent article in the June 2006 edition of Smithsonian Magazine points out, his predecessor had croaked from a plague that was still going on when he was papalized in 590, and he decided the best way to keep from getting sick himself was to show God how much he’d already suffered.

He cranked out not one but a whole series of sermons on a model of repentance, a woman who’d renounced her wicked ways, and he played pretty fast and loose with history.

The factoid factory.

Ol’ Gregory consolidated several different Marys into one, as a moral lesson – and, hey, if the pope says it’s true,

that’s good enough for the average man on the cobblestones back when years just had three numbers, right? Sort of the Fox News of his time, he was a font of fear, cranking out factoids for the masses – and you know what a factoid is, don’t you?

A small fact, you say, a tidbit or snippet of information? Sort of true– which is a good working definition of a factoid.

As the distinguished congressman Al Franken has explained, a factoid is actually something that seems to be the truth.

Like a humanoid seems human, a factoid seems to be a fact, but really isn’t. If, however, it’s close enough to truth to be believable – close enough for government work, as they say – just spread it around until everyone believes it. This means, Franken says, the fact that a factoid is a small fact is, in fact, a factoid.

Madonna and Magdalene.

There’s another side to Magdalene’s story, based on the Gospel of Thomas and her very own gospel, neither of which made the cut for the final library that became Scripture. It got factoided up in The Da Vinci Code, but the premise is Magdalene was actually the wife of Jesus, they had children, and she lived out her days in the south of France, where chapels in her honor still exist. (Not a bad place to retire, actually.)

The Madonna side of the Madonna/Magdalene feminine dichotomy gets center stage this time of year, but Maria Lyle’s December cover, Paloma, has more than a touch of the Magdalene. An ever so feminine dove rests on her hand, which holds an ever so prickly and masculine bit of holly. Her eyes, somehow both sensual and innocent, look outward and inward, mirrors of mysteries.

Top contenders would have to be all the variations of Charles Dickensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 1843 short novel A Christmas Carol, and Frank Capraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s film Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Wonderful Life, released just over a century later in 1946.

Think of Christmas Carol, and you think of that old humbug, Scrooge. Think of Wonderful Life, and you think of Jimmy Stewartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s archetypal good guy, George Bailey.

Scrooge and George have a lot in common. Both get to take a hard look at their lives via a peek through the veil, courtesy of some Christmas Eve celestial visitors, and both get what anyone old enough not to want a pony or a Red Ryder BB gun Christmas morning really wants â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a second chance.

Austinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zach Theatre presents them both in December.

Zach, founded in 1932, is the oldest continually running theatrical company in Texas, and one of the ten oldest in the nation.

Holiday tradition, with a Zach twist.

A Christmas Carol becomes a musical with all the Victorian trappings, but with touches of modern gospel, soul, and rock and roll. (Think the David Bowie ballroom scene in A Knightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tale, a couple of centuries later.)

This Wonderful Life, Zachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production of Capraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s classic, has the usual suspects from the film, from the reluctant hero George Bailey to the evil developer Henry Potter (whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opposed to affordable housing, the perfect villain for Austin, 2014). The twist? All thirtyseven characters are played by one guy, Martin Burke, called Austinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite actor by the Austin Chronicle.

Holiday Heroes, part of Zachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Theatre for Families program, is a Saturday morning holiday singalong and slapstick comedy fest.

Black Tea and Fig Bites

by Nerissa Oden This is a crunchy fig treat with a slight bitter taste of black tea offset by the sweetness of the figs. Classic flavors that combine to delight, it’s an eyebrow-raising addition to holiday get-togethers.

BLACK TEA AND FIG BITES DRY INGREDIENTS 2 teaspoons organic black tea (loose, or from tea bags) 2 cups raw, shell-free hemp seeds 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon sea salt WET INGREDIENTS 1½ cup whole dried Mission figs (about 12 whole figs) ½ cup liquid egg whites (or egg substitute) 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Cover a 12 x 17-inch baking sheet with parchment paper.

3. Remove stems from dried figs then combine all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor. Start on low speed. As the whole figs break down into smaller pieces, raise to a higher speed to break them down further.

4. Transfer the mixture to a small mixing bowl.

5. Gently spoon-drop bite-sized portions of dough 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheet. Do not over compress; keep them loose, pushing the mixture off the spoon with your finger.

6. Bake for 8-12 minutes.

7. Allow to cool on the pan. The cookies will harden as they cool.

Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. (Leave some out for Santa, and you’ll be sure to get what you want for Christmas.)

Mercury, Gadflies, and the Legacy of Hal Huggins

ver been stuck in traffic, or on hold with the cable company, and made up lists to pass the time – favorite songs, favorite movies, favorite things you’d like to do to Time Warner Cable?

Mercury in dental fillings is an idea whose time came (and should have gone) well before the Civil War. American dentistry was either a high-dollar endeavor using gold and silver, or a sideline for barbers, blacksmiths, and tinkers, guys who patched up things like pots and pans using whatever metals were handy by mixing them into a paste, using the only metal that’s liquid at room temperature – quicksilver, or mercury.

Around 1840, The American Society of Dental Surgeons was created, pledging not to use mercury amalgam in fillings.

By 1859, the ASDS had been replaced by the amalgam-friendly American Dental Association, and the ADA has maintained its stance ever since.

Other groups have become more open to change, according to Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health. The 2014 Minimata Convention, signed by almost all major countries in the world (including the United States), aims at complete cessation of human exposure to all mercurybased products, and the EPA has mandated that every dental office in the US have mercury amalgam removal systems in 2015, to clean water leaving their office.

“Would this be happening,” Carpenter asks, “if evidence were not there to support its dangers?”

Carpenter has first-hand knowledge of those dangers.

He was diagnosed with mercury poisoning in October 2010 through blood, urine, feces, and hair analysis by Quicksilver Scientific, after travelling all over Texas trying to find a doctor that could help him.

My life was ending.

“I’d been placed on antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, prescription sleep aids, and had been referred to a psychiatrist, all because none of the talented doctors I saw ever thought mercury exposure, related to my profession, could possibly cause my health problems. I threw up nearly every day, couldn’t eat or digest food, couldn’t sleep, felt overwhelmed easily, and suffered with chronic fatigue. Emotionally, I felt aggressive, angry, extremely shy, confused, depressed, and very nervous. I experienced terrible muscle soreness and chronic pain.”

Carpenter felt embarrassed explaining his symptoms, and could tell people didn’t always believe him. “I felt like my life was ending.”

Once diagnosed, he researched ways to remove his remaining mercury fillings – safely. “I found a dentist, Stewart Nunnally in Marble Falls, to remove my mercury. He became a mentor, leading me to Hal Huggins, who’d helped him regain his health when he was diagnosed with ALS – Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“Hal Huggins is important to me, and his dream is important, because without the research he’s done, without standing up to to defend human rights, without all the blood chemistries he performed to learn what he did, I wouldn’t have the health – or the practice and environment – I have today.”

Through Huggins’ research, Carpenter says, he now has one of the safest environments in the world to have mercury removed.

To sting people and whip them into a fury, all in the service of truth. – Socrates When society needs to change, sometimes it takes a gadfly to buzz around and pester the herd. Socrates was a gadfly, and got a cup of hemlock. Martin Luther King was, and got a bullet.

For his groundbreaking work alerting patients and professionals to the dangers of mercury amalgam, Huggins wound up in court and had his Colorado dental license revoked in 1996. He was vindicated when it was restored over ten years later.

Hal Huggins gave what might be one of the last lectures of his career at the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine conference in October, honoring Martin Luther King with a bit of poetry, and naming his talk after King’s most famous speech. Here’s an excerpt:

Catching a Tiger by its Tail

I

n our conventional way of looking at illness, we see a symptom, like a sore throat or a tumor, and find various ways to treat it so it will go away. This is analogous to hacking off the tip of an iceberg and expecting it will disappear because the tip’s no longer visible. All we’ve really done is to treat the physical manifestation of something much more complicated, brewing beneath the surface.

Treating a symptom and having it disappear is considered a cure – it’s the cornerstone of allopathic medicine. We’ve found numerous such cures for many horrible diseases in the last hundred years. A drug, for example, can make part of the brain work more efficiently, or kill off cells that divide and grow too quickly. A knife can remove a part of the body that is sickened and diseased.

Cures work at the physical, on the physical – molecule to molecule.

While cures are beneficial on one level, the problem is they introduce physical change into complex systems that have a cascade of related moving parts. To alter one part of the whole often changes others, downstream. Removing a sick organ, for example, can create space in the body that destabilizes the location of others. Changing levels of serotonin to decrease depression can cause erratic sleep patterns, and sexual dysfunction.

Healing works at a different level than curing. To be whole again, we often need both. Just as an app on your phone doesn’t exist without the software code giving it form and function, a symptom also exists because of the energetic engineering behind it.

Whereas curing removes the symptom, healing corrects the engineering driving it.

All symptoms are rooted in distortions of our energetic field. In addition to being physical bodies, we’re also energetic beings who have lived for many lifetimes. This energetic self has been called the soul or spirit in religious terms, but scientifically it’s the programmable field, or blueprint, behind all our physical, mental, and spiritual realities.

Everything we are originates from information stored in this Light Energy Field, or LEF. It is a bubble of observable (to sensitives) light, riveted into our main chakra system. Every traumatic or chronically challenging experience we’ve had becomes imprinted and stored on this field within our chakra wells, compromising their performance and causing the disruptions at the physical, mental, and emotional levels we refer to as symptoms.

In Energy Medicine, therefore, we do not diagnose a client as having a specific disease or affliction, because one person’s symptoms may originate from an entirely different imprint than another’s. Symptoms are just the tip of the tiger’s tail – the job of the healer is to track the rest of the tiger.

The origin of one person’s ankle pain, for example, may be from having lost a foot in war in another lifetime, while another’s may be from the imprint of a bone break in a troubled childhood. One person’s throat tumor may come from being silenced repeatedly as a child, while another’s may come from the imprint of a hanging in another lifetime.

While allopathic treatments may slow down or remove a symptom, the imprint must be removed, too, or the trouble will reoccur.

Using Energy Medicine is analogous to using quantum mechanics instead of Newtonian physics. Both have their place. Cures often give immediate relief, but healing means going upstream to the origin of the problem and shifting the blueprint for this illness from there, by removing imprints.

From this new canvas we can we look at the many possible outcomes for any given event and lock in a more promising outcome.

To truly heal we must find that tiger and release it from its cage, not cut off its tail.

by Rima Star, MA, LMT Oil pulling means swishing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; vigorously pulling and pushing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one or two teaspoons of coconut, sesame, or olive oil for five to thirty minutes through the mouth, teeth, and gums, then spitting it out and rinsing or brushing. Dr. Vasant Lad of the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico recommends another version of this practice called Gandusha, in which oil is held in the mouth without swishing for three to five minutes.

Three or thirty minutes, thousands of people over as many years have apparently found benefits to their oral health and hygiene.

Why? Oil pulling is said to help detoxify the tongue, palate, gums, teeth, and upper throat, and to bring awareness to facial muscles, giving them a workout â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a form of facial yoga, helping prevent or lessen face and jaw-related discomforts.

As far as we know, oil pulling comes from the several thousand-year-old Indian tradition of Ayurvedic medicine â&#x20AC;&#x201C; ayur, life-giving, and veda, knowledge. One of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest holistic whole-body healing systems, its main purpose includes detoxification of body systems and establishing routines or practices as a foundation for health.

Oil pulling fits both categories.

Andrew Weil reports that a study in India found reduction in participantsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bacteria count, concluding oil pulling can help maintain oral health â&#x20AC;&#x201C; echoed by a 2011 paper in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine on benefits of the Gandusha method. Hopefully, evidence-based studies are (or will soon be) underway in the US and other countries to explore the results of an oil-pulling regime.

by Gary Hanna (Part four of a series) Chromium is a trace mineral involved in protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism, often referred to as the master regulator of insulin. (Hint: Insulin equals blood sugar levels, equals cravings, equals diabetes.) It’s important to replace chromium daily, and levels decrease with age.

What does chromium do?

Chromium helps with metabolizing glucose and releasing its energy to cells, and with neurotransmitters, brain function, insulin performance, thyroid function, and hormonal balance – most women experience cravings when hormones are out of balance. (So do men, but we think of women as more “hormonal.”)

Chromium is a trace mineral essential to metabolism of lipids (cholesterol), and to formation of fatty acid and cholesterol compounds. When chromium is depleted or eliminated in urine, blood sugar dips and you get tired. (When I’m over tired, my ears start to ring. Chromium usually stops the ringing in about twenty minutes.) Other minerals involved in blood sugar regulation are vanadium and zinc.

Cravings and weight loss.

Taking chromium (plain chromium, not chromium polynicotinate or chromium picolinate, which may have side effects) may promote weight loss by helping insulin regulation and promoting T3, the thyroid hormone that increases the rate of the body’s ability to burn calories.

Pure chromium may also curb cravings for sweets by promoting serotonin, the neurotransmitter that controls appetite and curbs sugar cravings – and refined sugar equals sickness and poor health. Sugar loads, in fact, increase rates of chromium loss by as much as three hundred percent in twenty-four hours.

Besides eating too many sweets, other common activities that use up chromium are hard exercise and hard work.

Of course, a little willpower plays an important role, too. Minerals and supplements only work as well as you let them, by exercising selfcontrol. There are no magic bullets for health problems.

In the nonprofit world, giving has increasingly become synonymous with giving things up. By and large, the relinquishments we’re asked to make are manageable. Yes, skipping that morning coffee does leave you a bit irritable during a 9am meeting, but we can all reflect back on these self-inflicted sacrifices with a smile and a bit of pride, congratulating each other on our success.

God, it’s said, provided food and kept the critters from breeding or eating each other, but Genesis makes no mention of noise control or poop disposal. Some biblical commentators have speculated ol’ Noah was on the job 24/7, so you’ve gotta figure he was pretty much tapped out by the time he finally sent out the dove and it came back with a mouthful of olive leaf – or Olive relief, as it were.
