THINGS TO DO >> RIPARIAN EFFORTS
A new kind of
BEAUTIFUL
Wimberley is nicknamed “A Little Bit of Heaven” for a reason. It may just be a small Texas town of around 2,500 residents, but it has some of the most beautiful landscape this great state has to offer. The rolling hills of the Hill Country create a valley that is home to one main creek, Cypress Creek, but there are at least half a dozen others lodged among the hills. Those creeks flow into the Blanco River, which is one of the cleanest flowing rivers that can be found. But, come last May, that river turned into a tidal wave that rose to around 45 feet in height. In its wake, many of Wimberley’s beautiful cypress trees were ripped from the roots or snapped in half. The loss of an estimated 15,000 trees is heartbreaking to the community. But through tragedy comes triumph, and Wimberley is working towards that eventuality. Wimberley is a strong town that has grown even stronger in the wake of the flood. As people look to the river and grieve what once was, they are beginning to see the new beauty that is in front of them. “Nature is nothing but change and some of the changes are difficult to deal with,” local photographer Clay E. Ewing said. “But the result is still nature, still natural and still beautiful. That is how I look at the river.” There are areas of town like River Road where you can still see the downed trees as the clean up and restoration process continues. It is through this lens that that the destruction can give perspective to the beauty. “At this point, I’m looking through the initial stages of clean up where they are harvesting the trees,” Ewing said. “Even though you are shooting though the remains of the downed trees, the river is just beautiful. The sun still shines off the river and the water is still flowing. I know it’s changed, but still it is just so beautiful.” But at the same time, there is more to the trees along the river than just beauty. They also serve a purpose. There has already been one organization, RETREET, which came to town and begin replanting trees. Another, TreeFolk, is making plans to do the same. Both of these groups helped replant the piney forest of Bastrop after the devastating forest fires. “A fully functioning riparian forest is critical for filtering storm water, slowing flood waters, shading the river, providing habitat for local wildlife, and beauty for Hays County residents that live along the river,” Thais Perkins, executive director of TreeFolk, said. “Removal of that forest meant all those functions were removed along with it. If we respond quickly, we can speed up the recovery of the forest to restore a healthy river and to reduce future flooding and damage to property.” As Wimberley works to restore the beauty of old, it’s important to realize the balance that is life along the river. The flood is one of nature’s ways of cleaning and changing what once was into what it will become. The river may look different, but it is still as beautiful as it ever was.

THINGS TO DO >> WIMBERLEY SQUARE
Wimberley
Square ‘16
In order to enjoy what Wimberley is all about, all that is needed is an afternoon stroll through the Square. Many times that stroll in the afternoon turns into an evening stroll, because it takes time to enjoy the ambiance of small shops and small town life. For generations the square has been the center of town. Winter’s Mill, which was the founding business of Wimberley, was a stone’s throw from the Square, which grew due to the mill. Pleasant Wimberley bought the mill, and the rest is history. A trading post at the Square’s location has been documented back to the 1870s. The current shopkeepers offer all types of wares, with everything. From silver jewelry to flavored popcorn and art of all types, including one of a kind folk art and of noted Hill Country artists. Many art galleries are all within walking distance. Kiss the Cook offers one-of-a kind cooking gadgets and books for anyone who likes to cook, Taste Buds has gourmet sauces and wines to be tasted, and the boutiques like Wall Street Western, Dove Tails and Gracious Ladies are not to be missed. There are shops that feature décor and other things for the home such as Blue Willow, Rancho Deluxe, River House and the Santa Fe Connection. When you work up an appetite, there’s the Wimberley Café featuring good old time meals with daily specials, Marco’s Italian Restaurant, Inoz’s Brew and Chew featuring craft beers, and Cypress Creek Café, which has not only great American food, but also live bands on the weekends. After eating, dessert or a good cup of coffee is nice. Sip on the Square offers coffee just the way you like it. Amy’s Ice Cream is right around the corner and Papa Hoo’s Popcorn has flavors and colors that make popcorn a real treat or Wooden Spoon with excellent frozen yogurt. At the end of the day, there are also accommodations that are available right on the Square to complete your stay in Wimberley, such as The Square Inn or Wimberley Log Home Motel or Cottage on the Square. “I can’t think of a better place to shop for myself, my family or my friends,” Cathy Moreman, Executive Director of the Wimberley Chamber of Commerce, said. “It’s an experience – not just a shopping expedition.”

THINGS TO DO >> WIMBERLEY SHOPPING
Shop WIMBERLEY
There is plenty of shopping to be done in Wimberley both on and off the Square. In fact, there are dozens of shops just a few steps away. Ranch Road 12 South Some of the best shopping in town is actually located on Ranch Road 12 just south of the Square (businesses can be seen to the right). There is the wine shop, Taste Buds, and Pitzer’s Fine Art nearest to the Square. As you walk towards the bridge over the Blanco River you pass by another of Wimberley’s artistic venues in the Wildflower Art Gallery. On the left hand side of the road, there are shops like Santa Fe Connection, Chulitas, offering women’s fashion, and the Herb Room. If you are interested in boots or a “Hill Country Chic” styled clothing, stop in at the Wild West Store or Dove Tails. There is even Shop the Tree House for furniture, gifts and décor or the best scrapbook store in Central Texas at Sassy Scrappers. No matter what you are looking for, a quick stroll down Ranch Road 12 from the Wimberley Square is sure to have it. The Quarter Just below the Wimberley Square towards Cypress Creek is an area called The Quarter, which is filled with unique and eclectic shops. With a green area right along Cypress Creek, it is a perfect spot to take in the views while enjoying shops like Rancho Deluxe, which has a variety of decorative rustic, ranch and folk art, or On a Branch, which offers lifestyle boutiques and specializes in women’s fashion, among many other shops. Old Kyle Road On the other side of the Square, there is Old Kyle Road and the Lumberyard Retail Center. The Lumberyard, which actually used to serve as Wimberley’s old lumber mill, houses multiple shopping locations like Annie James Boutique and further down the road on the way to Blue Hole Natural Park, you can find the Wimberley Player’s theater, The Playhouse.

River Road Head north from the Wimberley Square and find River Road at the first stoplight. A short distance down will give you a chance to see two of Wimberley’s best resale shops. The first, on your right, is the Village Thrift Store. The proceeds from the store go back to five local charities. A little further down is Rescued Relics, which offers vintage and antique shopping. North of Wimberley Heading further up Ranch Road 12 and you are certain to see Ace Hardware. Don’t be fooled by the name, Wimberley’s Ace is more than just a hardware store. Besides having the best tea in town, Ace has a wide variety of unique gifts. There is also more shopping to be done by heading down FM 2325 with one-of-a-kind stories like Eagle Mountain Flag, which is now most known for creating the famous ‘Wimberley Strong’ flag that can be seen at nearly every business in town.

THINGS TO DO >> MARKET DAYS
Market DAYS 2016 On the first Saturday of March through December, Lions Field on FM2325, and really all of Wimberley, comes alive because of Market Days, one of the largest and oldest outdoor markets in the state. The tradition is carried on from a time when the area was the “Old West. People would come from surrounding ranches and buy, sell and trade articles of all types. In 1971, the market moved to Lions Field and first Saturdays in Wimberley would never be the same. The fun and excitement that was generated by going to the market was finally realized once you hit Wimberley. Actually seeing what was for sale, as all type of things would be available at the market, was a thrill. That still holds true today. All types of articles are offered, from soaps to neon, crafts to art, all from more than 475 vendors from across the state and beyond. Shopping can also work up an appetite, so there are plenty of food stands placed around the market featuring burgers, tacos, corndogs, popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers and some of the best BBQ around. If you’re thirsty, there are plenty of places to quench your thirst, with beer and wine stands stationed for convenience. Market Days is run by the Wimberley Lions Club and helps local organizations like Crisis Bread Basket, Meals on Wheels, the Wimberley Fire Department, EMS, and many more. Dollars are also poured into local scholarship funds. Over 200 Lions Club members are available if you have any questions. They can also help arrange to get your new treasure to your car. “Wimberley Market Days is a fun place for me to work with my fellow Wimberley Lions and a great, centrally located, shopping experience for our visitors. I have been cutting brisket in barbecue for 20 years now and always look forward to the next Market Day! John Estepp, 1st Vice President of the Lions Club, said. But the profit the Lions Club generates is poured back into the community. If you are in the area the first Saturday of the month, Market Days is not to be missed. It is just a couple of blocks down the street from HEB on FM2325. More information can be found at www.shopmarketdays.com.

For decades, if not longer, Wimberley has been known as a haven for artists. Maybe it’s the hill country. Maybe it’s the trees. Maybe it’s the rivers and creeks that run through town, but anyone who has lived here will tell you it has an eclectic vibe. In 2015, Wimberley was designated a “Cultural District” by the Texas Commission on the Arts, and, while it took a bit of work, nobody was surprised. In Wimberley, there are 15 art galleries – and that is just surrounding the Wimberley Square – to go along with an enormous amount of live and performing arts. There are two local theatres in EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens and the Wimberley Players, both of which are consistently award winning. The Wimberley Players, which has been in Wimberley for 37 years. Beyond the incredible live theater, Wimberley’s artists keep shining. The Starlight Symphony Orchestra started in Wimberley in 2002, and while it has grown to encompass much of the surrounding community, the people of Wimberley consider them home grown. The same can be said for live performances like the Wimberley Community Chorus, the Hill Country Jazz Band and the Hill Country 16 || 2016 SPRING & SUMMER GUIDE TO WIMBERLEY
Community Band. There are also two live music venues, Cypress Creek Café and Ino’z Brew and Chew, within the district. One thing is for sure, Wimberley may be a small town, but it is not short on culture. Wimberley is actually the smallest Cultural District in the state of Texas. Only 27 places have been labeled a Cultural District, and many of them are from much larger cities. “There are many places that have applied and were denied,” Cathy Moreman, board member of the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance, said. “It is rather competitive, and it’s becoming more competitive now. Wimberley is the smallest of the cultural districts. We are in with districts in Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas, so it is unique that Wimberley is included in that realm.” The official designation by the state as a Cultural District is a new source of pride for the community, but it appears it will also be a boon to the local economy. Now that Wimberley has the designation, it will be promoted by the state of Texas as a Cultural District along with the other cities. It gives a legitimacy to the city’s cultural qualities. “Artists who are working and living here, are going to be able to sell their work easier,”
Moreman said. “The galleries will be more successful. People from all over will find Wimberley based on that designation. The idea is that this community will continue to grow the arts. When people go to towns to enjoy the arts, they tend to spend more money to stay and eat and shop – and buy art.” There is another added benefit. Non-profits within the cultural district, which essentially is the area within walking distance of the Wimberley Square, are able to apply for grant funding. Thanks to the designation, the Wimberley Players recently qualified for a $20,000 matching grant to help build an outdoor stage and public garden in front of the theater. “We are thrilled to be a part of the Cultural District, and to have the opportunity to apply for this,” Julie Ray, with the Wimberley Players, said. “We are also thrilled to have the support of the Texas Commission on the Arts.” Over time, way-finding signage could also be a potential addition via grants. “This designation is recognition for Wimberley as a place for people to come, visit and enjoy the culture, history and art of our town,” Moreman said.

THINGS TO DO >> ART GALLERIES
Bent Tree ART GALLERY “Artists need to be inspired,” Stan Allen, owner of Bent Tree Gallery on the Wimberley Square, said. “There is a beauty to Wimberley and a uniqueness to it.” Wimberley has long been a place for artists to gather. The beauty of the natural scenery may have been why some started flocking to Wimberley, but it is the local culture that has kept them coming. “I’ve had people ask me ‘Why are there so many artists in Wimberley?’” Allen said. “The answer is because there are so many artists in Wimberley. We are like birds of a feather. We flock together. Artists are very unusual in that they really support each other and they are happy for each other.” There are 15 art galleries in downtown Wimberley alone. The Wimberley Square is lined with them. Many of them show off the local talent. That has created a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts. The more art galleries there are, the more people come to Wimberley to see them. The more people that come, the more galleries pop up. “I’m of the opinion that the more art galleries the better,” Allen said. “I could see us having another 10 without a problem what-so-ever. That is what brings people here. They know it’s an art destination, and it feeds on itself. We are getting artists from Austin and San Antonio and all over that want to show their art in Wimberley.” Besides the many out-of-town artists that want to be a part of the Wimberley scene, there are plenty of talented locals to showcase, and Bent Tree is a perfect example. The gallery is owned and run by the artists, most of them local. There are 14 artists featured at Bent Tree in a sort of co-op to share the space. “I think it represents the art of Wimberley,” Allen said. “We have a very diverse group of artists. We have watercolors and we have alcohol ink. I call mine photo-based digital art, which makes pictures look like paintings. We have traditional artists. Between the 14 of us it is pretty varied.” And with so many of those artists living in Wimberley, they tend to show off the local culture. “Just about every one of our artists will have something about Wimberley,” Allen said. “We are in Wimberley, because we are excited about the scenery and the feel. We try to capture it. The Hill Country has a great reputation, so it tends to give you a feel and a certain type of composition you are looking for.”

THINGS TO DO >> ART GALLERIES
BENT TREE FROM PAGE 18 Bent Tree Art Gallery has also started two of Wimberley’s most successful art-related events. On April 23 and 24, the Blue Hole Regional Park will be taken over by 75 artists that are both local and from throughout the United States for Arts Fest. The event started at Bent Tree until it grew big enough to move to the park. There is also a monthly event called the Second Saturday Gallery Trail held on the second Saturday of every month from 4 to 7 p.m. About a dozen local art galleries stay open, and many of them provide food and drinks. Bent Tree also has a live band that often sits out in the courtyard. “I think we represent a feeling of true artistic fun,” Allen said. “The Second Saturday Gallery Trail just has a feel too it. We have band here every second Saturday, and sometimes people are out dancing in the street. We have fun here.” Bent Tree Art Gallery is located at 105 Henson Road at the back of the Wimberley Square. They can be contacted at (512) 847-9438. To find out more about the art galleries of Wimberley, stop by the Wimberley Visitor’s Center at 14100 Ranch Road 12 next to Brookshire Brothers.

THINGS TO DO >> LIVE THEATER
LIVE THEATRE There are many small towns that are picturesque, quaint, cute and fun to visit that do not have live theatre. Wimberley, being the artistic community that it is, has not one but two venues and both are award winning. The EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens is one, and the Wimberley Players is the other. EmilyAnn is known nationally for its outdoor performances, especially for Shakespeare under the Stars. But with the addition of the Burdine Johnson Indoor Studio Theatre, their performances are held throughout the year. “The EmilyAnn strives to provide professional, high quality theatre in a warm, loving, and encouraging environment,” Artistic Director Bridget Farias Gates, said. “It’s a combination that is not found in many places. Shakespeare in an outdoor amphitheatre, children’s theatre, large-scale musicals, and indoor theatre in the round are all things you will find at the EmilyAnn.” This spring, at the outdoor stage, “Shrek, the Musical” will tell the story of Shrek, based on the Dream Works movie, but filled with songs. The center of the story is a green ogre who rescues a princess, with a sassy donkey as a sidekick; the fun story is for those 5 to 95 years old. June 3 through July 3 are the dates for this lively performance. The children’s production of Cinderella will be performed at the Burdine Johnson Indoor Theatre. Telling the timeless fairy tale of a mistreated stepsister who becomes a princess, it will be held July 9 -31. But the highlight of the season is the 20th Annual Shakespeare Under the Stars. Held on the Outdoor Stage, this year’s performance will be “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The program is nationally known and draws actors from around the state. The Bard’s comedy portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies that inhabit the PHOTO SUBMITTED BY WIMBERLEY PLAYERS
forest in which most of the play is set. Performances are from August 4 – 13. Since 1998, EmilyAnn’s Shakespeare Under the Stars has been performed outdoors by actors aged 12 years old to graduating high school seniors. Arrive a little early and check out the ever growing and expanding EmilyAnn Gardens, a Wimberley gem. Their website is emilyann.org. The Wimberley Players started more than 30 years ago with a performance in a lodge, then a local elementary school. The permanent stage is located on Old Kyle Rd. with a 110-seat theatre. The volunteer community theatre is very proud of its quality and each year wins multiple awards for performances and set design, lighting, directing and acting. With all this under their belt, they constantly strive to better the quality of productions. “We provide first class live theatre because of our exceptional PHOTO BY MARY RATH AT EMILYANN THEATRE

They offer a wide range of shows: comedy to drama, thrillers to musicals. The actors are from Wimberley, Austin, Dripping Springs, Houston and beyond. Performances this year are: “Good People,” a story of having next to nothing in America and the hope and dreams of people struggling with having next to nothing in a Boston neighborhood. Performances are April 15-May 8. July 8-31 will be the performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical score telling the Bible tale of the last week of Jesus’ life before his crucifixion, all with songs which include “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” “Lost in Yonkers,” the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize play by Neil Simon, tells the story of a 1940s family whose father takes a job in the South and leaves the children with their grandmother and mentally challenged spinster aunt who decides to marry her secret boyfriend. It’s a funny and poignant tale that will be performed Sep. 9-Oct. 2. If you love live theatre, Wimberley is the place for comedy, drama and everything in-between! THINGS TO DO >> GLASS BLOWING
Corridor of
GLASS Driving down Ranch 12 from I-35, toward Wimberley, the first business that sports the name Wimberley is the Wimberley Glassworks, the yellow building with a beautiful hand-blown glass chandelier. Travel down RR 12 from the glassworks, in just a few minutes, is 2 Muses Fusing at Silo Glass. The two have one thing in common, glass, but are completely different methods of making glass objects. One is of hand-blown creations where teamwork is essential; the other is fusing glass together in a kiln so that the glass melts on top of each other creating interesting shapes and patterns. Wimberley Glassworks owner Tim DeJong has been creating hand-blown glass in Wimberley since 1992. After moving in a couple of different Wimberley locations, he decided to build his own place where it stands today. Each of the glassblowing staff members have Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. Their precision and love for art show in each of the pieces created, from object d’art, chandeliers, vases and much more. “They have a lot of passion to demonstrate and it shows,” said DeJong. The creations have appeal and there is something for everyone. About 40 percent of the business is commercial. Glassworks has a unique niche in lighting. “We have everything from $10 magnets to pieces that are worth thousands,” DeJong said. A highlight to visiting Wimberley Glassworks is watching the glass being blown. Big hollow tubes have glass on the end, fired multiple times and then blown into something wonderful – that is just part of it. The jokes that are told by DeJong while he and his cohorts create these pieces keep the mood fun and informative. “I tell a lot of bad jokes and people laugh at the presentations,” said DeJong. If you have never witnessed glassblowing and how glass objects are created, this is the place to see. The demonstrations are informative, funny and not to be missed if visiting Wimberley. The Silo offers the other side of glass-oriented art. It also has beautiful glass objects for sale. Partners Chester John and Elissa Beach create works of art in glass, but by cutting different pieces of glass and then fusing them together by layering them in a kiln. Creative results are achieved from different thicknesses, colors, shapes and time in the kiln. Both John and Beach are retirees from IBM and moved into the Silo on Labor Day 2014. Experimenting with different techniques is what they like to do, and the results can be extraordinary. They met in Austin and discovered they shared the love of collecting glass for many years. They took glass courses, and have been fusing glass for the last 10 years. They decided to move out of Austin and find somewhere where there 26 || 2016 SPRING & SUMMER GUIDE TO WIMBERLEY

was an artist’ community. Wimberley was the perfect choice. “It was a good community for artists, and I was impressed with Wimberley,” Beach said. John said that working with glass is his passion, but it can be dangerous. “Glass is a wretched heat conductor, hot glass looks like cold glass,” he said. “Labor also figures into the cost. It is more expensive if you have to cold work, which means sanding and grinding flat edges on the surface.” There are two ways to fuse glass: hard, which is left in the kiln longer to melt the layers together; or soft, where the glass stays separate and layered. “We have a lot of fun doing new techniques, and our own stuff,” John said. They offer ornaments, fused glass beads, hanging works of arts, table decorations, and soon glass mobiles. They teach fusing year round, on Saturday and Sundays, and they have a lot of repeat students. Some communities are lucky to have one glass artwork shop. But here in Wimberley, there are two, each using different techniques to follow their passion for creating wonderful works of art out of glass. BOOTIFUL WIMBERLEY
THINGS TO DO >> BOOTS
Wimberley’s Bootiful project has brought the arts-loving community renown from sources near and far. With 50 giant boots scattered around town, the public art project gives visitors and residents alike a reason to explore the Wimberley Valley and its many attributes. The boots are accessible to the public year-round, with no closing hours, making a trip to view boots a great activity anytime. Boots can be found from one end of the valley to the other and an expedition to view the boots will bring you to some of Wimberley’s most celebrated locales. With boots whimsical and realistic as well as historical and fanciful, exploring the artistry on the boots also provides a perfect opportunity to contemplate Wimberley’s cultural and natural significance. Boots feature native wildlife, local landscapes, and Texas wildflowers. Other boots spotlight state and local history. While most boots have been painted with their scenes, boot fans will also discover metalwork, glass and mosaic embellished boots. For more information about the Wimberley Valley and to pick up your own guide to the “boot trail,” stop by the Wimberley Visitor Center, located at 14100 Ranch Road 12. Boot fans can also learn more at www.BootifulWimberley.com and at www.WimberleyArts.org. Bootiful Wimberley is a project of the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance, a nonprofit organization formed to promote the visual arts, music, theatre and cultural organizations in the Wimberley Valley. THINGS TO DO >> PARKS
Blue Hole The crisp cool water of Blue Hole has been refreshing for generations of Wimberley residents and visitors alike. The water, which springs from the ground just a few miles north at Jacob’s Well, is cool enough to help out during the 100-degree Texas summer days. Blue Hole Regional Park is widely considered one of the best swimming areas in the state of Texas and was named the second best swimming hole in Texas by Texas Monthly in 2008. Since then, the park has expanded. What used to be a privately owned section of the creek is now a 126-acre park. Beyond the beauty of the swimming area, there is a great lawn alongside Cypress Creek – perfect for basking in the sun – that is lined with Wimberley’s historic cypress trees. On top of the wonderful, waterfront access, the park includes approximately 3.5 miles of trails, picnic areas, a community pavilion, playscape, basketball court, sand volleyball court and amphitheater. Every Friday in April, the Friends of Blue Hole hosts a concert in the park for your musical enjoyment. Swimming is open on weekends through May and daily from May 30 through Sept. 5. The operating hours for the swimming area are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and make sure to show up early. There is often a wait to get in during the afternoons. For more information, call (512) 660-9111. In the past year, Wimberley received a present in the form of shiny new big brown signs with a roadrunner on it. They’re from Texas Parks and Wildlife designating the Patsy Glenn Refuge. The 1.8 acres bird refuge is a part of the Wimberley Loop Trail. The trail consists of Blue Hole, the Red Corral Ranch, Jacob’s Well, Charro Ranch Park and Blanco State Park. The Patsy Glenn Refuge sits right behind the Community Center, in the middle of town. The Winters-Wimberley House, original owners of Wimberley’s Mill, is on the left and as you go all the way back, you’ll see the refuge. Rainwater is collected for the birds, and the landscape of trees and brush piles give the shelter for birds and butterflies. Wildflowers are also abundant such as bluebonnets, blue sage, Indian paintbrush, and others that come and go with the seasons. The birds also change with the seasons: painted bunting, scissor-tailed flycatcher, Carolina chickadee along with woodpeckers and other birds. There’s also a chimney swift tower to lure the swift. Who knows, you might see the golden-cheek warbler, a frequent visitor here. Even if you are not a bird watcher, the refuge is a great place to visit and just contemplate, listening to nature sitting on a bench. The parks of the Wimberley Loop are a must for any serious birdwatcher. But sit and watch the birds, right in the center of town, at the Patsy Glenn Refuge.
Jacob’s Well Picture this. Below the surface lies a cavern that, for hundreds of thousands of years, acts as an underground river. Then suddenly, that river hits a wall and has nowhere to go. The water, with literally the force of the earth behind it, pushes upward until it reaches the surface leaving a gaping hole in its wake as the water begins to roll down the landscape at the start of what now is a creek. That is Jacob’s Well. Jacob’s Well is the gem of the Texas Hill Country with its enchanting blue-green waters luring in visitors from around the world. The mouth of Jacob’s Well is roughly 12-feet wide and the waters dive 30 feet, straight down, to the opening of the first cave. The caves dip into the Trinity Aquifer, which produces the water for the artesian spring. With layered limestone cliffs on one side, a vibrantly vegetated bank on the other and a lively riparian area alongside the creek, the Jacob’s Well Natural Area is a must stop for anyone coming to Wimberley. If swimming isn’t your thing, the Natural Area has plenty of trails to hike on. The park is open for swimming all summer. For more information, call (512) 847-2140. Parking for the Jacob’s Well Natural Area is located at 1699 Mt. Sharp Road.

One of the most iconic images of Wimberley are the centuries old cypress trees. In fact, it was those cypress trees that drew some of the first settlers to Wimberley. They eventually started a Cypress mill – but they certainly didn’t get all of the trees. While many of these beautiful trees were damaged or destroyed during the floods of 2015, certain areas remained intact. That is why a little trail along Cypress Creek has become so special. Along the end of the Wimberley Square starts a trail next to Cypress Creek that wanders with the water. The city has preserved 7.24 acres of land along the creek for the nature trail between the creek and Old Kyle Road. Cypress Creek Nature Trail Park provides picnic facilities, a water feature, children’s playscape, pavilion, and public restrooms. It has easy access to the Wimberley Square by heading just a few dozen yards down Old Kyle Road. Stop, shop and a take a stroll down Cypress Creek.

theatre & gardens
Just across FM 2325 from Old Baldy is the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens, 12 acres of park-like grounds, and it is a much easier to hike to the top of the hill at the EmilyAnn as opposed to its twin sister across the road. A short, well-manicured trail to the top of the hill offers a beautiful view of the northeast side of Wimberley. At the top sits Veterans Memorial Plaza, which has flags for all branches of the military and those missing in action. There is also a very special memorial at the top of the hill that is close to the hearts of those in Wimberley. The EmilyAnn Theatre Gardens was founded in 1998 to celebrate the life of Emily Ann Rolling, a Wimberley’s teen who tragically passed away. Now, at the top of the hill sits the Annanette Harper Children’s Memorial, which has bricks to honor children who were taken away too soon. Beyond the trails and unique playhouses that line them, the area also houses Shakespeare Under the Stars productions, classes and events year round. Visitors are welcome to walk through the gardens, enjoy an oversize chess/checker board and interactive musical garden, spend time bird and butterfly watching, eat a picnic lunch, visit the Veterans Memorial Plaza or simply enjoy the peaceful environment. The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk. The park is located at 1101 FM 2325 and can be found 1.1 miles from the intersection of Ranch Road 12 and 2325. It is located next door to the Wimberley High School. EmilyAnn.org

One of the most beautiful parts of the Texas Hill Country is the views. The rolling hills are a staple that draws visitors from the world over, and there is nowhere better to see the landscape then the top of Old Baldy. More than 200 hand-laid stone steps creep up the side of Old Baldy, so the climb to the top is not necessarily easy. The view, however, is worth the effort. Once on top of the mountain (at least that’s what people in Wimberley call it), the mesmerizing, 360-degree views show all that Wimberley and the Hill Country have to offer. In 2015, the land, which was previously owned by a local church, went up for sale. With the possibility looming that the property could be closed to the public, the people of Wimberley raised money through the organization “Save Old Baldy” and helped the city purchase the land. Now a public park for good, the property is generally open from dawn until dusk. If you are interested in making the climb, the park can be a bit hard to find. From the Wimberley Square, turn left on FM 2325. Head just to the outskirts of town, and turn right on Woodcreek Drive. Take an immediate right on El Camino Real and then another right on La Toya Trail. A short drive down will bring you to limited parking at the base of Mt. Baldy.

THINGS TO DO >> CORRAL THEATRE
CORRAL THEATRE
One of Wimberley’s favorite pasttimes is watching a movie on the weekends. That may seem a bit ordinary, but, as with most things in this small town, there is a little something extra to heading to the movies in Wimberley. The Corral Theatre is billed as the only outdoor, walk-in theater in the nation that regularly shows first run movies, and the experience is quite unique. The Corral first opened in 1948 and not much has changed with the theater since then. Last year, the Wimberley community helped raise the money to update the theater’s projection system to digital quality. This has allowed the Corral to once again offer first-run movies. Grab a lawn chair or a blanket (concessions are available for purchase) and settle in under the stars. Movies start shortly after the sun goes down on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the summer at the theater on the corner of Flite Acres Road and FM 3237. Make sure and show up early though, because the seats fill up fast. For more information, go to www.corraltheatre. com or call (512) 847-5994. 38 || 2016 SPRING & SUMMER GUIDE TO WIMBERLEY

THINGS TO DO >> FROZEN TREATS

FROZEN TREAT
On a hot summer day, there is no better way to cool off than finding one of Wimberley’s places for a frozen treat whether a snow cone or frozen yogurt or some of the best ice cream Texas has to offer. Wimberley’s longest tenured shop intent on giving you a brain freeze is Wimberley Shave Ice, which has been in town for nearly 30 years. With over 100 flavors for snow cones, including all natural and agave nectar sweetened, it’s a place you must stop behind King Feed and Brookshire Brothers. It’s not the only snow cone shop in Wimberley though. At “The Y Center,” near the intersection of Ranch Road 12 and FM 2325, is Shaved Ice in Paradise. They offer 50 flavors; adding a marshmallow cream or Nerds flavoring can help you get that taste of paradise. When it comes to ice cream, two of the best in Texas are available right here in town. Blue Bell Creamery may have been off the shelves for a while, but it is back and better than ever at the Old Mill Store and the Wimberley Cafe on the Wimberley Square. Just a few steps up Ranch Road 12 is the Wimberley Way, with Austin’s famous Amy’s Ice Cream. Pick one or try both, because they are both delicious. But maybe frozen yogurt is more your thing. Hill Country Natural Foods keeps two flavors on stock at all times and is located on FM 2325 in the vicinity of the high school. If you are sticking around the Square though, you might want to try out The Wooden Spoon, voted the best frozen yogurt in Hays County in 2014. If a caffeinated drink is more your style, there are two wonderful local selections to choose from. Maui Wowi serves authentic Hawaii coffee and smoothies from its location on Ranch Road 12 in front of Brookshire Brothers, while Sip on the Square can ice up one of their drinks to offer a little extra kick of caffeine while you are shopping.

TOWN
Pioneer Town, located at the 7A Ranch and resort, is a re-creation of an 1880s Wild West town that includes a house entirely made from bottles; a Cowboy Museum, which features artifacts such as “Doc” Holiday’s dental cabinet and a real horse drawn hearse; and the Family Room which features video games and the best ice cream cones. Just walking down the street you can feel what it was like during the early West. Pioneer Town has been the site for many re-enactors, both professional and kids having their own shootouts. The location has been used in film and TV shows including a recent made-for-TV movie. With cabins to rent and the Blanco River just a few feet away, Pioneer Town can be a trip back to another time. THINGS TO DO >> HAVE A DRINK
MIDDLETON brewing
Middleton Brewing is known for its Belgian style brews, with many on tap, made right at the brewery. Middleton offers five to seven in-house brews and 15 more great foreign and domestic beers. The beers are Belgian style with a few “hoppy” brews that have California and English style thrown in. Owner Dennis Middleton decided to pursue his love for beers, which him and his wife obtained in their many travels to Belgium. They serve all their beers in a chilled glass made for that particular beer, a little foam, and with the label facing the patron. Dennis’ previous life as a geologist is carried on in beer names such as Belgian Amber Garnet. Other beers offered include Pepperhead made with Texas peppers, Texas Pecan Amber made with more than 30 pounds of pecans, and a Coffee Porter, made with Mennonite Roasted coffee. The flavors are subtle and not overpowering, as with other flavored beers. The brewery is motorcycle and dog friendly with a fenced off area for canines. Middleton is located at 101 Oakwood Loop and is technically in San Marcos. In reality, it is just a few short minutes outside of Wimberley along Ranch Road 12 near the Junction. Cypress Creek RESERVE RUM
44 || 2016 SPRING & SUMMER GUIDE TO WIMBERLEY
Inspired by the crystal clear waters of Cypress Creek, David Watson constructed his distillery in the heart of the Texas Hill Country with the goal of producing flavorful handcrafted rum. Since 2000, the Watson family has worked to perfect the process that makes Cypress Creek Reserve a pleasure to drink, and they have been winning awards in the process. In 2011, Cypress Creek Reserve took home gold and bronze medal awards from the Ministry of Rum and in 2012 they were awarded a bronze medal from the World Spirits Competition. The rum-making process begins by fermenting thick rich molasses and fresh Hill Country spring water with a select blend of yeast. The rum is then distilled twice and slow filtered to produce Cypress Creek Reserve Crystal Rum. Unlike vodka, rum needs to retain certain flavors that multiple distillations would remove. After distilling, the rum is filtered through activated carbon for smoothness. Aging the Crystal Rum with gourmet Tahitian vanilla beans to create a rich vanilla extract then produces Cypress Creek Reserve Vanilla Rum. This variety has a complex floral scent and is more aromatic than the Madagascar variety. This transfers into the taste of the rum extremely well. The small batch process demands that special attention is paid to each batch, ensuring that Cypress Creek Reserve rums are always flavorful and easy to drink. Cypress Creek Reserve Rum is located at 1400 Jacobs Well Road on the north side of Wimberley. They can be found at www.cypresscreekreserve.com or contacted at (512) 847-6874.

WIMBERLEY BREWING COMPANY
PHOTOS BY DALTON SWEAT
46 || 2016 SPRING & SUMMER GUIDE TO WIMBERLEY
You could say that Wimberley Brewing Company started out small, but that is probably not a good description of the Collie family, which opened the brewery and pizza joint Brewsters in 2008. Owner Bruce Collie is a former NFL offensive lineman best known for his time playing for the San Francisco 49ers, and he has the family to match his NFL-sized frame. Collie and his wife Holly have 13 children, all of which help run the restaurant and brewery. The options available at Wimberley Brewing Company aren’t small either. There are at least nine of their own beers on tap. And there is something for every beer drinker. The microbrewery makes its own hefeweizen, amber, porter, chimay and IPA, just to name a few. The beers are all brewed onsite at The Junction, the intersection of Ranch Road 12 and FM 32, just a few miles south of town. The beers and ales are handcrafted, unpasteurized, unfiltered and all-grain. Stop by and enjoy handmade pizza and a beer of your choice on afternoons Tuesday through Sunday. They are located at 9595 Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley and can be contacted by phone at (512) 847-3299. Visit them online at www.wimerleybrewingcompany.com.

DRIFTWOOD winery
THINGS TO DO >> WINERIES
Driftwood Winery is not just another winery. In 2015, Driftwood took home the honor at the Houston Live Stock Show for the Top Texas Wine with the Longhorn Red, a blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah. Most of their grapes are grown right on the property. The vineyard was planted 18 years ago, and in 2002, they opened the winery. The 18-acre property produces around 60 to 80 tons of fruit and is supplemented with graped from a vineyard in Lubbock. Owner Gary Elliott described his wine as “Old World style,” meaning they resemble wines from Europe, with a lighter “fruit forward” style, as opposed to heavy California wines. The winery sits on top of a high bluff in the Texas Hill Country and looks out over the vineyards, which are several hundred feet below. The panoramic view of the valley pairs nicely with some of the best wine in Texas. Driftwood Estate Winery is located at 4001 Elder Hill Road in Driftwood, only _ miles from downtown Wimberley. WINERY
Wimberley Valley Winery is known for its sweet wines, like the Sweet Red, but it also offers much more with a focus on quality and a wide selection to suit all palates. Overall, they have around a dozen locally made wines to choose from. The winery is also well known for its special Christmas wines like the Christmas Spiced or the Christmas Mulled. Typifying a winery in the Texas Hill Country, Wimberley Valley Winery is located on 30 acres of beautiful land. Inside the main indoor area, a cozy seating area awaits, next to a magnificent stone fireplace. Barrel upon barrel line the outside of the stone venue. The original winery has frequently undergone renovations and additions as the company has grown, and today the facility is capable of fermenting and storing 25,000 gallons of handcrafted wine using temperature controlled stainless steel cooperage to precisely exact the production and maintain the quality of the wines. The tasting room’s address is 2825 Lone Man Mountain Rd in Driftwood. Contact them at (512) 847-2592. They are open everyday from 10 a.m. to 6p.m. PHOTOS BY GARY ZUPANCIC

PLACES TO STAY >> THE BLAIR HOUSE
BLAIR HOUSE PHOTO BY DALTON SWEAT
People come to Wimberley for a variety of reasons, but one thing is for sure, the town is a tourism destination. From rivers and creeks to shopping and the quaint feeling of a small town, there are plenty of reasons to visit. “I think people visit Wimberley for the scenic hills and everything Wimberley has to offer,” Chris Mahoney, owner of the Blair House Inn Bed and Breakfast, said. “The art. The music. The restaurants. It’s just a great place to go and get away. You can leave the city and come to a unique area like this.” There are hundreds of different places to stay in Wimberley, offering a wide array of lodging options. Some places are right on the Wimberley Square near shopping while others offer the serenity of Cypress Creek or the Blanco River, but each one has a quality that makes it special. The Blair House has been around for 25 years, and it is one of the many places to stay in Wimberley that has essentially become a destination by itself. “We tend to have a focus of being a getaway for adult couples,” Mahoney said. “We are a destination place where people will come here and stay here, and a lot of places in Wimberley are like that. People come here to enjoy the property.” Nestled on 22 acres, and just two miles from the Square, Blair House combines a love of the Texas Hill Country with the finer things in life. Known for its delicious food, great views, cooking school, art gallery and day spa, it offers an ambiance of peace and tranquility for your getaway. Between the main lodge, five suites and four private cottages, the Blair House can accommodate around 30 people. Rooms are individually decorated with a country chic flair to create a mood that is comfortable and serene. Most include whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, spacious living areas, private decks and hill country views. The walls of each building are lined with art, both local and regional. Oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, as well as metal and glass sculpture, are incorporated into the inn’s distinctive décor. A one-mile nature trail weaves throughout the entire property, and offers some of the best views of the Hill Country along with the two natural ponds that are on the 22 acres. “You can get into the woods and not even realize where you are,” Mahoney said. “Down behind the barn there is a grotto that is beautiful. There are two ponds. When you get on the hill, you can see for miles.” Another way to get away from it all is by stopping into the day spa. The inn’s highly experienced, licensed massage

therapists offer a wide variety of spa services including deep tissue, Swedish, Lomi Lomi, hot stone, Rain Drop Technique and facials. But what makes the Blair House really stand out is the food. For decades, the inn has hosted the best fine dining experience Wimberley has to offer every Saturday evening. Chef Chris Huffman prepares a gourmet five-course dinner, and the menu changes every week (the menu can be found online at www.blairhouseinn.com). In addition to the fine-dining experience, Blair House offers “culinary vacations” to learn how to cook from the chef himself. Cooking schools are available in both three-day and two-day classes. “Our chef (Huffman) is an up-beat guy, and he is fun to talk to,” Mahoney said. “He is really good at these cooking schools. He has everybody engaged, everyone is having fun and he can cook.” Three-day classes are themed and involve learning a specific cuisine such as Texas Barbeque, French, German, Spanish and more. The two-day classes involve learning a specific menu corresponding with the Saturday Night Dinner. For more information on the Blair House Inn Bed and Breakfast, visit their website www.blairhouseinn.com or call them at (512) 847-1111.

INO’Z
PLACES TO EAT >> INOZ’S
BREW AND CHEW Long hours of shopping the Square can inspire the appetite, walking up and down the shops and inspecting their unique offerings. That’s when a break is needed, with a tasty meal and maybe a glass or two of liquid refreshment. Located right on the Square, the restaurant and pub is the perfect way to do it. Co-owner Tom Keyser, a local restaurateur, has experience in running popular restaurants, having owned the Fork on South River and other places. When a location on the Wimberley Square that backed up to Cypress Creek became available, he knew what was needed. It was not fancy dining or even a place just for visitors. What was needed was a place where everyone would feel comfortable. This includes shoppers, locals and anyone looking to cool down. Open since 2002, “every single year has been a record year” for Ino’z. Keeping visitors and staff happy is a prerequisite for Keyser. There has been very low turnover and the other co-owner Jeremie Maxwell, worked his way up with hard work. There is always an owner on-site to welcome customers and guarantee “food quality and service quality,” Keyser said. Service is always friendly and the food is nothing like corporate lunch and dinner establishments. They offer nachos in many varieties, potato skins, smothered fries and other appetizers like Wings over Wimberley.

Entrees include baby back ribs, catfish, tilapia, rib eye steak, chicken tenders, chicken fried chicken and steak. Burgers are all from 100% Angus and hand-shaped, and never frozen. As for sandwiches, the rib eye steak sandwich is delicious as are the BLTs, Reubens, cheese steaks, po boys, and the Hill Country Club. They also offer various wraps including veggie wraps. Local and Texas brews are always on tap. “We keep Texas craft beers, keep it Texas,” said co-owner Maxwell, who changes the six draft varieties seasonally. Draft beers are crafted by brewers such as Twisted X (Dripping Springs) and Cornerstone (Spicewood) and bottled beer of all sorts are always cold and available. Wines from local area wineries and beyond, such as Duchman and Becker, are featured with Mondavi, St. Genevieve and others. There is also a full service bar with specialty drinks and of course margaritas. One thing that can’t be beat is the outside deck, newly restored after the Halloween Flood. Overlooking the beautiful Cypress Creek, the deck is dog-friendly and there are two bocce courts near the creek if you like to play. With a relaxing family atmosphere, good food, a large selection of your favorite beverages, and service that can’t be beat, Ino’z is answer to “where can we find a good place to eat.”

BUTTERFLY DAY
TļĹ çËàř îï
In Wimberley, you know it’s really the spring season when the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens releases the butterflies. On April 16, the 17th Annual Butterfly Festival, butterflies will be released every half hour with the fun beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until 5 p.m. Plan on getting there early and staying the whole day. It’s that much fun. This year’s family activities start with opening ceremonies and the dedication of the Texas Flag Pole, with a Commemorative Air Force Flyover (weather permitting). Then more than 3500 butterflies will be released with releases scheduled on the half hour. On display will be entries in the Butterfly Art Contest, submitted from students from throughout the state, with the 2015 winning entry displayed on commemorative T-shirts available for sale. Also on display will be the Flight House, featuring native Texas butterflies, nature activities, Pirate and Princess tents, games, concessions, live entertainment and lots of fun for the whole family. Celebrating the butterfly for 17 years, the Emily Ann Butterfly Festival has grown from a small gathering to the large festival it is today. There is something going on at all times, even if it’s just watching the faces of the children when the butterflies are released and they travel to the nearest slice of cantaloupe. Vendors sell butterfly themed toys and other offerings, great food and there’s even a Butterfly Store. Once there you can check out the gardens and all the hands-on activities that are available such as the over-size checkers and chess board, interactive musical garden, and new this year, a nine hole disc golf area, and new hands-on areas that are open for games and education. The dinosaur sculptures, Justin’s Castle and an actual maze are located on the grounds for fun. The EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens is just not theatre, the gardens are magnificent and a joy anytime of the year. “This year, the first release of butterflies will be in memory of those lives lost and for those who lost homes in the Memorial Day and Halloween flooding,” said Executive Director and Co-Founder of EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens Ann Rolling. The Butterfly Festival is family fun where nature, spring and butterflies are celebrated at one of Wimberley’s and the Hill Country’s most memorable events.
