lease forgive Jennifer Eckermann, Brenham’s Main Street manager, if she’s more than a little excited about 2016 from a historical standpoint. Decades from now, 2016 may well be looked at as one of significance in Washington County’s storied history. “This year is shaping up to be an exciting one,” said Eckermann, her enthusiasm obvious as the new year began. From the reopening of the restored Simon Theatre to plans for a major motion picture on Brenham’s fiery history to Washington-on-the-Brazos’ 180th anniversary, it’s easy to see why local officials are enthusiastic. Let’s start with the Simon Theatre project: Standing in majestic beauty as a magnificent monument to the late James H. Simon, the splendid new Simon Theatre is Brenham’s handsomest building, constructed along the most artistic lines and equipped with every thing needed to make a theatre beautiful, comfortable, convenient and safe. The dream of the lifetime of the man whose name it bears, its realization came too late for his personal gratification, as

he passed away soon after the plans were completed, but his successors have carried on, and the Simon Theatre now stands complete, ready for the opening Friday and Saturday. Occupying a most desirable location on Main street just across the street from the residence that has been the home of the Simon family for generations, the Simon Theatre is a handsome, two-story brick building, ninety by ninety feet, covering half a block in the heart of the business section of the city, and making the spot, formerly a neglected vacant lot, one of the most beautiful and attractive corners in that city. From Nov. 24, 1925 Brenham Daily Banner-Press Oh, if James H. Simon could see his namesake now. The flowery words that preceded the building’s grand opening (a dedication program included “Overture, Selection of Popular Airs with Miss Martha Grote at the Organ” and the showing of “The Merry Widow,” a Metro-Goldwyn Super-Production) were on a full page dedicated to the Simon. Historical Continued from page 9

For decades, it stood as the center of Brenham’s entertainment world. How many kids spent their Saturdays there, enthralled by images on the Simon’s towering screen? Movies were shown there as late as the 1980s, but its days in that form of entertainment were numbered as television and modern theaters took over. Over the next decades, it housed an insurance company and an Asian grocery store, had small apartments in a “ballroom” above the theater and was a Chinese restaurant that used the basement as a “grease trap,” almost fi lling it with grease. But what could have ended in a majestic building sliding sadly into ruins has a happy ending. The Simon is back. The Simon Theatre was designed in 1925 by renowned architect Alfred C. Finn. Finn was famous for designing downtown Houston’s Gulf Building, the Rice Hotel, Majestic Theatre, San Jacinto Monument and a long list of other landmark buildings. Locally, the Citadel (originally Brenham Country Club) and what is now Far View Bed and Breakfast were also designed by Finn. He designed four other famous theaters in Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth. The Simon is the only theater that remains from that era. Luckily, a group of interested citizens led by Tom Bullock Sr. saw the potential in resurrecting the Simon, forming the non-profit Brenham Main Street Historical Preservation (BMSHP) Inc. in 2003. It purchased the building in 2004, kicking off a fundraising campaign and restoration effort that has spanned 12 years. A grand “reopening” was held Jan. 31, with pianist Ezra Charles presenting his “Story of Boogie Woogie” in what is now Hasskarl Auditorium. HISTORICAL continued on page 14

The Simon’s new name is The Barnhill Center, named in honor of Jane and John Barnhill, major donors and among the project’s staunchest supporters. In addition to Hasskarl Auditorium, restoration of the upstairs ballroom — now named Bullock Ballroom in honor of Tom Bullock Sr. — is complete and has been hosting receptions, galas and parties for 18 months. Ironically, is the first time the second-story “ballroom” will actually be used as a ballroom. “There was a ballroom upstairs in the architectural plans, but they never used it as a ballroom,” said BMSHP’s Donna Cummins, who for the past 10 1/2 years has worked on the project. “The stories we’ve heard about were that it was used for storage, there was an office up there and at one point the men’s restroom was up there.” The first “clients” to move into the building was the Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Independence Coffee in 2011. Cummins said one of her favorite things about the project is hearing from people who went there when they were children. “That has really been a fun part of the job, hearing all the stories and all the memories that people have,” said Cummins. “First dates, first kisses ... “Dr. (W.F.) Hasskarl Jr. talked about the vaudeville shows where the kids and teens weren’t allowed to go in, because they were risqué. “He and a friend used to hide in the alley until the show started, then they’d go and peek through the freight door.” For some young boys, the upstairs could be a scary place, said Cummins. “The restroom for the guys was on the other side of the ballroom, and we heard stories that they used to be scared death to go up there in the dark,” she said. There’s another story about two young men who noticed some old red velvet curtains lying in the ballroom/restroom. They decided to toss them out of a window because one of the boys wanted to use them to re-cover the seats in his car. They returned later to retrieve their ill-gotten gains, and the new upholstery job was done. Melissa McCaghren/Banner-Press

The only problem was that whenever anyone riding in the car would sweat, the curtains left a red stain on their shirts, said Cummins. BMSHP’s work on the project has been nothing short of remarkable. It has raised $5.3 million and its board of directors has remained virtually intact since the organization has formed. “It’s such a cornerstone of downtown,” Cummins said of the center. “Having the Convention and Visitors Bureau in there is just perfect to welcome all the people who come downtown. “I’m really glad Tom Bullock Sr. had the vision to put this non-profit together. “All of us have kept doing this and continue to do this based on Tom Bullock’s vision.” Bullock died in 2007, before the restoration efforts could be completed. Cummins said it’s hoped it can become a “multi-function conference center.” “We’re really looking to attract midweek conference meetings. And we’ll have live performances,” she said. “We’ve already had a wedding ceremony in the auditorium and a number of galas and receptions in the ballroom.” There are plans to show classic movies, independent fi lms, travelogs and other entertainment. The Burning of Brenham Sometime this spring, Brenham is expected to see an “influx” of temporary residents when a major motion picture project will begin this spring. The movie, based on the book The Burning of Brenham by local author/historian Sharon Brass, will be produced by RB Film Productions. Roy Burger, owner and CEO of the company, has finalized agreements with the city of Brenham and Brenham school district to use properties they own for the project. “This project will bring exciting opportunities to the community,” said Eckermann. “The anticipated economic impact is extremely promising. Film professionals will work in and around Brenham during the project. This will bring people to our hotels, restaurants and other businesses. “Roy will open auditions to local residents in addition to the film stars he will bring in. A longer-term benefit will be the tours offered during and after the project, enhancing Brenham’s tourist industry.” Burger said the fi lm could lead to more projects. “With the amount of material that Sharon has researched, plans for more projects will follow,” he said. “We plan to use the facilities we build here for additional projects in my future, and will also make them available to other film companies.

“In short, we see Brenham becoming a fi lm hub that will attract fi lm makers and tourists for years to come. The local economy should get a boost during the next year, and continue to grow in the future.” A 109-acre tract east of Brenham, the city’s old landfi ll site, will be the location of “old Brenham,” one of the primary sets needed. It will be a replica of Brenham in the mid1800s where much of the action will take place. A smaller “old Brenham” set will be constructed at the same site for the purpose of burning it, to fi lm the actual historic fire. The movie sets will be open for tours during and after production of the first fi lm. Burger also plans to establish a production office to house fi lm crews, props, equipment, costumes, catering and other necessities for the project at the former Alton Elementary campus. A gym there is expected to be converted into an indoor studio during the fi lming. Tours of that facility will also be offered. “I’m excited about a third tourist attraction that we foresee downtown along the railroad tracks, just south of Commerce Street,” said Brass. “The Washington County railroad is a big part of our story and those tracks are in the same location as the fi rst ones laid in Brenham. “Roy is arranging for a locomotive, similar

to the one first used here in 1861, to reside on a spur of those rails during the movie’s production.” Burger said set construction will begin this spring and the script will be completed at the same time. “Our plans are to start shooting by summer,” he said. “There are many other places where we could make this fi lm, but I want to make sure that Washington and Lee Counties benefit from the project. “After all, this is the story of Brenham, Giddings, Washington County and Lee County. Besides, I love the people in these communities and will enjoy spending time here.” Burger’s career in the motion picture industry began 34 years ago. Growing up on a dairy farm in western Austin County, he became a wrangler and livestock coordinator in his earliest fi lm work. He then began performing stunts, acting and managing transportation and has spent the past 10 years in various roles such as producer, second unit director, transportation coordinator, livestock coordinator, stuntman, stunt coordinator and actor. Burger has worked on 119 feature fi lms, many which have won Oscars. He has also worked on 29 television commercials, eight “movies of the week,” nine television series and one HBO movie. He has managed budgets up to $400,000,000 on major fi lms.

2016 is an important year for Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site. Not only is it the 180th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence at the park site, but it is also the state park’s 100th birthday. It was March 2, 1836 when 59 delegates bravely met there to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. From 1836 until 1846, the Republic of Texas proudly existed as a separate nation. Washington on the Brazos is, indeed, “Where Texas Became Texas.” Washington on the Brazos has many onsite amenities open daily, as well as an incredible schedule of events and programs. The entrance to the park grounds, Visitor Center and parking is always free. The site’s Visitor Center features interactive exhibits; it also houses the spacious Washington Emporium Gift Shop. The Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site is a wonderfully preserved 19th century stagecoach inn, located nearby in Anderson. Check www.wheretexasbecametexas.org for updates on the park’s 100th Birthday celebrations. Two other large-scale special events occur soon at the park. On March 5 and 6, the Texas Independence Day Celebration features live music, food, traditional crafts, living history presentations, historical encampments, commemorative programs, Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band; the Texas A&M University Singing Cadets; Kids Zone and special events. On July 4th, Fireworks on the

Brazos offers a fun-fi lled day of family activities. Sponsored by H-E-B, event highlights are the free outdoor music concert by the Cody Bryan Band from 7 to 9 pm, followed by a free fireworks extravaganza. Those who join the Park Association enjoy the fireworks from a private membership reception on the second floor balcony of the Museum. Two special exhibits open this March in the Museum: A Legacy of Leadership: The Signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence runs through February 2017 and focuses on those brave leaders who determined the future of Texas; the new Pioneer Playroom simulates a Texas frontier homestead, with inside and outside features. Other special events this spring and summer at WOB include art exhibits; music performances; book signings; craft-making; Stagecoach Days; Living History Saturdays; nature workshops for children and adults by Gideon Lincecum Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists; and many programs that look at historic traditions of children’s toys, basket-making, gardening, knot-tying, farming

and medical treatments, to name a few. Joining the Association offers a summer full of easy, inexpensive, educational and fun ways to entertain families and visitors. Memberships are available for individuals, families and businesses and include free admission to the Site’s attractions for a year. The expansive park grounds, playground, amphitheater, pavilions and meeting facilities provide a beautiful setting for events, picnicking and bird watching, as well as four geocaching sites. Park and attractions are accessible for the mobility-impaired. State park rules apply, including children must be accompanied by an adult, and alcohol is prohibited. Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site is located at 23400 Park Road 12, Washington, Texas 77880—approximately halfway between Brenham and Navasota, off of Highway 105. From Highway 105, follow either FM 912 or FM 1155 to Park Road 12. For additional information, call (936) 8782214 or visit www.wheretexasbecametexas. org.

Geocaching in the ‘Birthplace of Texas’ The Washington County Chamber of Commerce have hidden various caches across the county, in hopes of getting more people to visit the historic sites and fun locations in the area. Unlike a normal scavenger hunt, these geocaches are hidden by the locations in spaces outside as a part of the chamber’s Birthplace of Texas GeoTour. The tour has 28 locations, including a three-part view of the historic homes of Washington County. Of the 28 caches, 22 are new for the geotour. The concept of a geotour isn’t new, Website and Social Media Manager Jenny Mills said, but the Birth of Texas GeoTour is the first in the state, with other towns in the state discussing ones for their areas in the near future. If a geocacher is among the first 250 to collect 25 total points — either by fi nding the geocaches, or by eating, shopping, and staying in Washington County — a cacher can receive a collectible geocoin, which

can be placed in any cache that will hold it and can be tracked online. Of the 250 coins, Mills said that 150 or so have been claimed by people who have completed the tour. Most have come from the state of Texas, but Mills said that there have been people who have visited from out-of-state, like Colorado and Georgia, and out-of-country, like the Netherlands and Puerto Rico. While she said that a majority of the in-state cachers haven’t stayed multiple days in Washington County, the comments have been positive and even if someone stays only throughout the day, it means multiple people are seeing Washington County attractions and hopefully will return. To find out more about the Birthplace of Texas GeoTour, visit www.geocaching.com.

Enjoy yourself on, off land at Lake Somerville Lake Somerville State Park complex consists of four units: Birch Creek, Nails Creek, Lake Somerville Trailway, and the Somerville Wildlife Management Area. It is northwest of Brenham in Lee and Burleson counties. Birch Creek is 2,365 acres in Burleson County on the north shore, and Nails Creek consists of 3,155 acres in Lee County on the south shore near the west end of the reservoir. The two units are connected by a 13-mile trailway system. The Somerville Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of 3,180 acres with the Yegua Creek Compartment in southwest Burleson County and the Nails Creek Compartment in northeast Lee County. The Somerville Reservoir was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Work was started in June 1962, and deliberate impoundment of water was begun in January of 1967. The dam is located on Yegua Creek, 20 miles upstream from its confluence with the Brazos River, and about two miles south of

Somerville. Somerville Reservoir covers 11,630 acres with a shoreline of 85 miles. Its main purposes are flood control, municipal water supply and recreation. The state park complex was leased from the federal government in 1969 and opened in 1970. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the Somerville WMA under a license agreement and in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Flag Pond is a 350-acre impoundment in the Yegua Creek watershed; it is located within the Lake Somerville State Park along the Somerville Trailway. The pond is a natural depression which has served as wetland habitat for waterfowl wintering (mid-October to mid-February) in the Lake Somerville vicinity. Flag Pond was originally developed by a private hunting club in 1926. Enjoy, but do not disturb historical places. If you find an artifact, leave it in place and let park staff know.

County has designated areas for public hunting Deer season is drawing closer with dove season already underway, and hunters are purchasing all the gear they need for the season. For just $48 a hunter can purchase a public hunting permit which allows them to hunt on designated public hunting grounds across the state. There are three such public hunting grounds in Washington County, one southwest of Chappell Hill and two in Carmine. “Hunters will receive a map in the mail that shows them all the land by county,” game warden Jonny Heaton said. “The book will also show them what they can hunt on the land.” Some areas have dove and water fowl hunting, some have big game such as deer and some lands have all three designations. Private land owners lease land to the state for public hunts, and this gives hunters who can’t afford the hunt outfitting fees to have access to public hunting lands. “Hunters have to respect the landowner,” Heaton said. “Mainly the property is walkin, they can’t drive all over the land and they have to clean up after themselves.” The $48 fee goes back into the program to lease more land for public hunts, and a percentage of purchased supplies and materials is used to make the land more habitable for

animals and research programs which help the wild life. “Hunting controls the number of animals based on how well the land can care for that species,” Heaton said. “If the animal population is too high then disease will increase and wipe out more animals than hunting would. “Hunting keeps the diseases down and protects the quality of the animals reproducing.” Hunters benefit the economy in other ways as well, Heaton said. They stay in hotels, dine in restaurants and spend money in local shops and stores. Some game requires a special license, for instance dove hunters need a migratory stamp on their permit, duck and geese require a water foul stamp and a big game stamp is needed for deer hunting.

Dove hunters can only use shot guns which hold no more than three shells, they can hunt from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset, and can bag 15 doves per day, Heaton said. General deer season begins Nov. 6 and ends Jan. 2 and hunting with muzzle loaded guns starts Jan. 3 and ends Jan. 16. Legal bucks need a 13 inch or greater inside spread if the antlers are forked, but if one or both of the buck’s antlers are unbranched then they are legal no matter the spread, Heaton said. The bag limit is four deer, two bucks and two doe. “The unbranched bucks are considered inferior, and we want to improve the quality of the bucks, so hunters will take these out of the breeding pool,” Heaton said. “We have the spread limits to give the bucks a chance to mature and reproduce.”

County holds rich athletic history

B

renham is known for its baseball and rightfully so. The Cubs are seven-time state champions — the last title coming in 2010. But football made its own state appearance in 2013, proving the school district offers more than just a premier baseball program. The football team has made three total appearances at state (2013, 2009 and 2002). Baseball won titles in 1970, ‘75, ‘76, ‘86, ‘87, ‘88 and 2010. Softball has also won several state championships along with individual student-athletes in track and field. Baseball qualified for the UIL Regional Finals in 2014. The girl’s basketball team lost in the regional quarterfinals in 2014, as did the girl’s soccer team the past two seasons. Two boys relay teams and the boys 100-meter dash squad qualified for state in 2014

with the 4x100-meter relay claiming bronze medals. Teaira McCowan won a silver medal at state in the shot put last spring. Football, volleyball and boy’s and girl’s basketball all reached the postseason in their most recent seasons. Brenham High competes in UIL District 19-5A with Houston-area schools Stratford, Tomball, Tomball Memorial and Spring Woods. Magnolia, Magnolia West and Waller are also in the district. In the fall Brenham offers football, girl’s volleyball, cross country and team tennis followed by swimming, basketball and soccer. The spring sports include: Golf, tennis, track and field, baseball and softball. Brenham is also home to Brenham Christian Academy. The Eagles compete in TAPPS (Texas Association of Private

and Parochial Schools) which provides a variety of girls and boys varsity sports along with state championships. BCA football competed in TAPPS Six-Man Division III District 4 with Living Stones Christian, Texas Christian and Faith Academy last year. Burton is the other school district located in Washington County. Panther football participates in UIL District 13-2A Division II along with Bremond, Snook, Milano, Granger, Bartlett and Somerville. The school also offers baseball, softball, basketball and girl’s volleyball. The Lady Panther 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay team set a pair of state records in Class 1A at the 2015 UIL State Track and Field Meet.

Relax in Rustic Round Top, one of the smallest incorporated communities in Texas, is on the old La Bahia Road between La Grange and Brenham in Fayette County. The earliest settlers were Englishmen who came to the area from other parts of the United States. The family of Stephen Townsend arrived from Florida in 1826, and the name Townsend was the first to be associated with the site of Round Top. The family established a Presbyterian church, Florida Chapel and founded a Masonic lodge. The Townsend family had the distinction of sending more men to the battle of San Jacinto than any other family. Joel Robinson, another Round Top resident, was the captor of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. His father, John Robinson, was a member of the First Congress of Texas. John Rice Jones Jr. settled in the Round Top area in 1831 and in

1835 was made the first postmaster general of Texas by the provisional government. Other important names associated with the earliest settlers were Taylor, Ledbetter and Alexander. The Ledbetter land was the site of the first Round Top Academy. By the mid-1830s Round Top was identified as Jones Post Office. The English were soon supplemented by Germans. In the early 1840s, Alwin H. Soergel, author, historian, musician, and member of the Adelsverein, settled in the Round Top area, bringing with him the beginnings of the Germanic traditions that characterize the area. He built a white house with an octagonal tower, which by 1847 was listed as the United States post office, with Henry A. Robertson as postmaster. The odd-shaped tower gave rise to the name Round Top. By 1850 Round Top had a

Round Top population of 150, two stores, two blacksmith shops, two taverns, a post office and a line of tri-weekly stages serving the predominantly German citizenry. According to some sources the first Round Top Fourth of July celebration, held in 1851, gave the community the distinction of having the oldest continuous Independence Day cele-

Relax in Rustic out of native cedar by Traugott Wantke. Education, music, language studies and the arts played an important role in the lives of residents, and the cultural arts characterized Round Top throughout the 19th century. Chartered in 1870, Round Top is located on Cummins Creek in northern Fayette County. The town is said to have received its name from “the house with the round top”, an early stagecoach mileage designation that, at the time, was located about a mile northeast of the town’s present site. The first settlers were prosperous Anglo-American plantation owners who came here as early as 1826 and were active in political and military affairs. By the late 1840s, German immigrants settled here. The original 1880s courthouse in Round Top burned in 1924 and was rebuilt at the present location on the town square. Major restorations were accomplished by the Bybee Foundation on Henkel Square, by the James Dick Foundation on Festival Hill, and by Miss Ima Hogg at Winedale. Round Top has become an internationally recognized cultural center for the arts and education through the programs of the International Festival-Institute, founded in 1971. The 1,200-seat concert hall at Festival Hill is the permanent home of the Texas Festival

Round Top Orchestra. Residents have always taken pride in the care and preservation of their town. Those who have relocated here from places more metropolitan have learned to treasure this pocket of rural tranquility. Today, Round Top has found new supporters, who along with life-long residents and those descended from the earliest settlers, are working to preserve this unique living legacy.

Carmine, A Truly Unique Antique Town

GATEWAY TO THE ANTIQUE FESTIVAL

The llittle l town off C Carmine is right h on the h b beaten path. h L Located dd directly between Austin and Houston on Highway 290, Carmine (pronounced “kahr MEEN”) is a perfect mid-way stop for travelers and antique shoppers. Many people stop here for gas or a short break and then come back when they see what the town has to offer” explains Vicki LaRue of the Economic Development Board. “We have the basketball museum, the train depot and visitor’s center with displays of the history of Carmine in its earlier days as a cotton and railroad city. We have a beautiful shaded park for the kids or pets to get some fresh air, and we have great art galleries, antique stores and more”. With the best antique shows in the country scattered over the surrounding area during the fall and spring, Carmine touts itself as the “Gateway to the Antiques Festival”. But Carmine’s antiques aren’t just on the roadside a few time each year, many of the historic buildings house antique stores that are open all year around. With a wonderful blend that ranges from fine furniture to “repurposed” junk, there is something for everyone. Founded in 1883, Carmine is located in the heart of Central Texas. In fact, the city motto is “The little city with a big heart” With thousands of cars passing right through town on 290 everyday it makes the city the northern entrance to all of the other communities of Fayette County. Carmine was incorporated in 1973 with an active city government, an excellent consolidated school system (The Round Top-Carmine School) with the high school campus in Carmine and the elementary campus located in Round Top. Carmine Bank, a well-established area bank, is famous for once being robbed by members of the Bonnie and Clyde gang. The small population and quiet atmosphere allow for a great getaway from the stress of the larger cities. Carmine is only about a 1 ½ hour drive from Austin or Houston making it an easy day or overnight trip to the country. Visitors can enjoy shopping for antiques, visiting the cities museums, experiencing the events and activities of the area and enjoying the accommodations at local Bed & Breakfast. The City of Carmine also has a beautiful public park with picnic tables, barbecue pits, a playground for children and a pavilion for family gatherings, birthday parties and other events. Carmine is a great place to live if you are raising a family or looking for a place to retire. If you are looking for a place to start a small business please consider Carmine. There a many business opportunities in Carmine including low taxes, local incentives and a very supportive community. With its wonderful history, great antique shopping, beautiful Fayette County countryside, and friendly people, there is something for everyone in Carmine.

Chappell Hill Located directly between Houston and Austin, Chappell Hill is quietly tucked away off Hwy. 290 is the Gateway to Washington County and provides a wealth of history, beautiful country side scenery, and of course plenty of shopping and dining throughout downtown and throughout the Chappell Hill area. Chappell Hill is well known for hosting two of the largest arts and crafts festivals in the state, the “Official State of Texas Bluebonnet Festival” held the second weekend in April annually as well as the Scarecrow Festival scheduled the second weekend in October. These two events bring in nearly 25,000 tourists into the this tiny community that take in the history, arts and craft shopping, live music, children’s entertainment, and

plenty to do for the entire family. You can find out more about these two festivals by visitingwww. chappellhillhistoricalsociety.com. History is plentiful in this tiny community with over a dozen National Historical designations, the Chappell Hill Historical Society Museum which was a former school house and now operates as a museum and provides a walk back in time portraying the many lives of individuals and families that contributed to our nation’s history as well as making an impact in our state and local historical significance. The town is proud to showcase the Rock Store, the Circulating Library, and the Providence Baptist Church which are all still used today and provide an insight into the many contributions Texans made on

Texas history. During the summer, the Chappell Hill Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Independence Day Parade and this year will be celebrating the “40th Anniversary” of what has become known as the “Biggest Small Town Parade!” Nearing 100 entries, antique cars, uniquely designed parade entries and of course the “World Famous Marching Kazoo Band,” this parade has grown to attract nearly 3,000 attendees and provides a morning of entertainment for the entire family and now includes a Cool Rod Car Show which has quickly become a popular event immediately following the parade. The parade begins at 10AM and the care show immediately follows and you can gather more information by visiting www.chappellhilltx.com.

The Chappell Hill Historical Society also sponsors the “Summer Cowboy” event on the 4th of July immediately following the parade – the “Summer Cowboy” event which is held at the Museum and allows children and families to step into the past life of our cowboy friends, enjoy lasso lessons, experience a real chuck wagon and enjoy a museum full of Cowboy artifacts as well as “hands on” program for all to enjoy. Chappell Hill offers numerous beds and breakfast opportunities, shopping at our numerous shops throughout downtown and the countryside, as well as a winery and plenty of dining opportunities to complete your visit to Chappell Hill – come enjoy a day in the country!

Chappell Hill 19th 9 h century The town was established in 1849 by Mary Elizabeth Haller (née Hargrove; 1827–1867), who founded the town on 100 acres (0.40 km2) of land she bought and having opened a post office two years earlier. She then named the town after her maternal grandfather Robert Wooding Chappell. The area around the town was settled by planters from the Deep South and, thanks to the fertile soil of the Brazos River valley, cotton became the area’s main crop. Jacob Haller (d. 1853) and Mary built in 1850 a large home which served as a boarding house and then became the Stage Coach Inn, which Mary or her mother Charlotte Hargrove (1804–1879) operated until 1859, continuing under new ownership until 1871. Because the inn was about halfway between Houston and Austin, it was a convenient stopover for travelers along two major stagecoach lines. Before the Civil War. the population reached a maximum of about 3,000 people; at that time, San Antonio and Galveston were the largest towns at around 8,000 people. A sawmill, a railroad line, five churches, and a Masonic Lodge were built in the area. Two colleges, Soule University for men and Chappell Hill Female College for women, were founded in the 1850s The town was incorporated in 1856. The men of Chappell Hill formed part of the First Texas Lancers

cavalry l regiment i t during d i the th Civil Ci il War and fought in Missouri, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Men from Chappell Hill served in numerous renowned Confederate units, including the Texas Brigade and Terry’s Texas Rangers, and saw action in most of the major engagements of the Civil War. In addition, the Soule University building was used as a field hospital. In 1867, a yellow fever epidemic decimated the town and other southeast Texas towns. Many men who survived combat lost their lives just two years after the war’s end. The town never recovered and faded into obscurity. Polish immigrants, mostly from the German partition, began to appear in the 1870s and the area was resettled, though it did not reach the status[?] of before. In 1889, Father Grabinger from Brenham’s St. Mary’s established St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church. Denizens of Polish ancestry can still be found in the area surrounding the church and throughout Washington and Austin counties.

20th & 21st centuries In 1933, the Farmers Bank of Chappell Hill refused to close its doors when so ordered by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during a March 6 to March 10 banking freeze. The owner of the bank took out an ad in a Boston newspaper protesting the order. Chappell Hill today has a tourist economy, attracting visitors with its restored homes, the Bluebonnet

FFestival, ti l its it Independence I d d D Day parade, a Scarecrow Festival, and a museum. The Main Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Chappell Hill remains one of the best historically-preserved towns in Texas. On May 10, 2008, an election was held to incorporate Chappell Hill into its own town government. 201 ballots were cast out of a possible 297 eligible voters. Incorporation was rejected by almost 3 to 1 voters; 148 votes against and just 53 for. 90 votes were cast in the mayoral poll; Julie Edwards received 55 votes and Mary Tom Middlebrooks won 35. For the two unopposed council positions, Travis Bevers received 62 votes while Larry C. Wiese received 60. The results of these contests were immediately invalidated by the anti-incorporation outcome. In 2013, the syndicated television series, Texas Country Reporter, hosted by Bob Phillips, declared the highways between Brenham and

Ch Ch ll Hill Hililll as the th No. N 2 site itit for f Chappell the viewing of wildflowers within Texas. The first ranking went to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower ntteerr in in Austin. Austtin. Center

The promise of faith comes to us as a gift; mystery really, in which God’s great love for us is revealed through Jesus. But how does faith grow? We believe that Holy Scripture, guided by our faith tradition, takes us on a journey which always leads to God’s love for us and all people. At Christ Lutheran Church, Day School and Foundation, our mission is to invite all people of any age to join us on that journey.

Toubin Park 208 S. Park St. | Brenham Beneath Brenham streets is a State Archeological Landmark, a large system of historic cisterns. The cisterns were built in the late 1800’s to store rainwater for public fire fighting. Private cisterns were also abundant throughout early Washington County, used for bathing, drinking and cooking. Enjoy the Wild West story of why these cisterns were built. It’s a tale of an early railroad, a rough Boom Town, and colorful characters who shaped Washington County’s history. Self-guided tours through this historic downtown Brenham pocket park can be enjoyed any time of the day.

Burton, Texas

We invite you to join us …step back in time when cotton was king. The historic 1914 Burton Farmers Gin* is nestled in the heart of Burton, Texas - located on the same site where it was built over 100 years ago! Designated on June 19, 2009 as the Official Cotton Gin Museum of Texas, the historic cotton gin has been visited annually by thousands of visitors who have enjoyed exhibits at the Texas Cotton Gin Museum. Burton, a small rural German community of 350 is conveniently located halfway between Houston and Austin on Hwy 290. Tours offer guests a fun and educational presentation on cotton where they “pick cotton”, discover its impact on Texas and American history and learn how the seeds are separated from the soft white fibers. Young and old alike enjoy the DVD “Cotton: From Wagon to Finished Bale” and of course - the guided tour of the historic gin is always a highlight! For all you engine buffs…our gin is home to a 1925 Bessemer Type IV diesel oil engine. The restored 16 ton “Lady B” is the largest internal combustion engine of its vintage still operating in America! We still gin and bale cotton each year at our annual Cotton Gin Festival. * The Burton Farmers Gin is designated a National Historic Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission.
