The Kentucky Derby still draws the largest single-day crowd. Built in the style of the exhibition hall at the old fair grounds where today’s HEB is located, The Race Barn opened for business in April 2003. Wearing the Crown The making of a queen and her duchesses
B
ecoming queen is a long and tedious process. It includes getting hair ready, putting on makeup, jewelry, sashes, crowns and dresses, but this is only the tip of the queen iceberg. Although it might just seem like a ride on a float at parades, getting to the crown is a long process. The process begins when applications become available at the fair office at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds or online at www.gillespiefair.com. Girls must be a sophomore or junior and enrolled in a Gillespie County high school for the 2016-2017 school year. Applicants must be in good standing at the high school and maintain a minimum grade average of 75 for the year. Also, girls must have attended a Gillespie County high school during the 2015-2016 school year. An applicant must have written consent signed by her parent(s) and/or legal guardian to enter the contest. Girls must not have been charged with any misdemeanor or felony, excluding minor traffic violations. Also, girls must not be married or have ever been married, or have a child or have ever had a child.
After turning in applications, girls attend a mandatory meeting with the directors and reigning court to discuss what happens ‘Fair Friday’. One or both parents and/or legal guardian must be in attendance, also. “I really enjoyed being a role-model for the younger kids and to show them that even though you may have disadvantages in life, you can go out and become whatever you want to become despite any differences you may have,” Julie Krebs, 2016 fair queen, said. “I was the youngest one in the competition and I won.” At the parade, the applicants ride the contestant float. Afterward, the girls head to the fair grounds to conduct an individual interview with the judges. “For the interview, we were each given a packet of questions, and my friends, Rachel, Marah, and I practiced the questions on each other to prepare,” Jaleigh Brown, 2016 second duchess, said. “We also read through the Gillespie County Fair Book to gain history and knowledge about what we should do.” Friday night, the girls go on stage and are asked a question in front of an audience during the crowning ceremony.

DUCHESS ROTHERMEL, daughter of Peter and Kathy Rothermel, will be a senior at Fredericksburg High School (FHS) this fall.
DUCHESS BROWN, daughter of Jason and Jennifer Brown, will be a senior at FHS this fall.
DUCHESS GRAEF, daughter of Nathan Graef and Carissa Staats, will be a senior at FHS this fall.
The girls are then chosen by out of town judges to be crowned queen and four duchesses. “I was really surprised because I was last to be crowned and I didn’t know if my name was going to be called and so it was just really exciting and nerve-racking at the same time,” Rachel Rothermel, 2016 first duchess, said. The newly crowned girls then shadow the reigning court the Sunday of fair weekend at the horse races. The reign of the new court does not officially start until January, so they travel with the previous year’s court to get hands-on experience. “My favorite part is being able to meet everyone and making new friends,” Marah Graef, 2016 third duchess said. “I’ve learned that as long as you are confident in yourself, then things will happen for you.” Once the girls begin their reign, they have to help tear down the old float and build a new one on which to ride. Throughout their reign, the court sells prize drawing tickets, passes out free passes to the fair and presents blankets
to winners at horse races. Krebs, who shows a variety of animals, including steers, lambs, Angora goats, market goats, chickens and pigs says she learned to never give up. “I learned that you should always believe in yourself and step up to certain moments in life,” Krebs said. “Don’t just go with the flow just because you’re younger. Step up and don’t let others take control. You can do whatever you set your mind to.” The girls also attend parades, the Gillespie County Youth Livestock Show, PBR and Scholarshipfest. Although a lot of work goes on behind the smiles and crowns, Rothermel said the experience she gained makes it all worth it. “I learned how to work with girls and although we disagree sometimes, I learned how to agree with them and negotiate different inputs and help decide a progressive output,” Rothermel said. Krebs will crown her successor on Friday, Aug. 26.

he Gillespie County Fair started featuring Gillespie County Fair Queens on the cover of its catalog in 1953. The first to appear on the cover was JoAnn Striegler, queen of the 65th fair. The Gillespie County Fair has gone through many transformations, hosting baseball tournaments and an all-male queen’s contest, but what remains a lasting tradition is honoring its queen and court. The Gillespie County Fair is an annual tradition that brings the community together for entertainment, parades and horse races. Many fair-goers are able to experience the hard work and long hours of hundreds of volunteers but many don’t know what it takes to put the fair all together. “We’ve got 50 directors that probably put in a year, close to 20,000 hours combined,” said Lee DeLong, president of the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association. When it comes to race season, DeLong says they will put in 100 hours just spending three or four days out there. Scholarship Fest to mark 20th year It’s a milestone year for the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association’s Scholarship Fest. The annual event will celebrate 20 years when it is held on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. And to mark the milestone, a new goal for scholarship giving has been set and past recipients will be honored. Since 1991, the fair association has awarded scholarships to 625 students totaling $343,650. In an effort to help even more high school students further their education, the fair association would like to increase that total number to $400,000 by 2017. All former GCFFA scholarship recipients are invited to attend this year’s event and be recognized. Those recipients planning to attend must RSVP to the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association at 830-9972359 to reserve one free admission ticket. The RSVPs are due by Sept. 19. “College Tailgating” is the theme for the event in keeping with its purpose. And as such, individuals, alumni groups and college fans are encouraged to show their support for their favorite schools. Everyone is invited and encouraged to display their favorite tailgating theme, and teams are invited to come and represent their favorite schools in the chicken wing barbecue cook-off that will be held as part of Scholarship Fest. Local wineries, breweries and distilleries are also invited to take part in the event by offering tastings and sales of their products. Gates for Scholarship Fest will open at 3 p.m. on Sept. 24 for an afternoon and evening of food, including appetizers and a barbecue meal with all the trimmings, silent and live auctions and more. Among the live auction items will be cakes baked and decorated by the 2016 Gillespie County Fair Queen’s court. The evening will also include a prize drawing for thousands of dollars in prizes donated by local and area merchants that include guns, jewelry, hunting and fishing equipment, gift certificates and more. Admission tickets for Scholarship Fest are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate. Scholarship Fest tickets are available in advance online at www.gillespiefair.com. In addition, tickets will also be available in advance at the office at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds and at Stroeher and Son/Stroeher and Olfers and Lochte Feed and General Store. Prize drawing tickets are being sold in advance, at the races and at Scholarship Fest. Winners need not be present to collect their prizes. Cost of the prize tickets is $5 each or six for $25. Prize drawing tickets are also available in advance at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds, from fair directors, at Stroeher and Son/Stroeher and Olfers and at Lochte Feed and General Store. A special prize drawing will also be held. Tickets are $20 each.
It was noted that in lieu of an appreciation barbecue this year, all volunteers will receive a ticket to attend Scholarship Fest. For more information, visit www.gillespiefair.com or call the fair association at 830-997-2359.

For example, say: “In the first race, I would like $2 to Win on number one.” or “In the second race, I would like a $2 Exacta with 7-2.”
RACING GLOSSARY A ACROSS THE BOARD: Bet a horse to win, place and show, and if the horse wins, the bettor collects all three ways.
D DAILY DOUBLE: In a “Daily Double”, the bettor picks the winners of two consecutive races designated as “Daily Double” in the official race program. The wager must be made before the start of the first of the two races. For example: “$2 Daily Double 8-9” means the bettor has selected the 8 horse in the first half and the 9 horse in the second half.
E EXACTA: Pick the top two finishers in the exact order in which they finish. Example: “$2 exacta 1-2” means the number one horse has to finish first and the number two horse has to finish second. EXACTA BOX: Bettors can “box” two, three or more horses to cover a number of possible combinations. For example: a three-horse exacta box would make for six combinations and would cost $12 for a $2 bet. A “$2 Exacta Box 3-4-5” means any two of the three horses must finish first and second, in any order.
Q QUINELLA: Pick the top two finishers in any order in the race. Example: “$2 Quinella 1-2” means the one and two horses finishes first and second in any order. QUINELLA BOX: Choose more
than two horses for a Quinella box. For example, a three-horse box (three wagers) would cost $6, a four-horse box (six wagers) costs $12 and a fivehorse box (10 wagers) costs $20. Of those horses selected, two of them must finish first and second, in any order.
S SUPERFECTA: Pick the top four finishers in a race in the exact order.
T TRIFECTA: Pick the top three finishers in the exact order. Example: “$2 Trifecta 7-8-9” means the seven horse must finish first, the eight horse must finish second and the nine horse must finish third. TRIFECTA BOX: The Trifecta Box includes every possible combination that couldresult from the selected horses. Example: “$2 Trifecta box 4-5-6”, means those three horses must finish first, second and third in any order. The $2 bet would cost $12. A $2 four-horse Trifecta box costs $48 and a $2 fivehorse Trifecta box costs $120. TWIN TRIFECTA: Like the daily double, this bet involves two races designated as “Twin Trifecta” in the race program. To win, the bettor must pick the first, second and third place finishers in exact order in the first half of the designated race. After the first race is declared official and before the second race is run, the bettor exchanges the winning ticket and selects the first three horses in the exact order of the second race of the “Twin Trifecta”.
