Visitors invited to step into county’s the past
Step into the Past: Brenham Historic Tours, a new tourist package, will launch in early October. Tourists will see a short movie starring Carl Glissmann, playd by Charlie Pyle, at Glissmann Drug Store Museum. He will show how medicines were mixed from recipes by hand in the 1920s and 30s. There’s no shortage of history to be found in Washington County. From Washington-on-the-Brazos, Blue Bell, Chappell Hill, Independence, the Texas Cotton Gin Museum and so forth, it’s hard not to sneeze on a piece of Texas history while you’re here.
When it comes to Brenham however, the offerings have been a bit lacking for history buffs, though not for a lack of history itself. Now, thanks to a new tour package entitled “Step into the Past” coming this fall, people will be able to explore Brenham’s history like never before. The tour will inPAST continued on page 10

clude seven total attractions, five of which have never been previously opened to the public. “I think we have a number of people who come here who are history buffs and who want to learn more,” said Lu Hollander, the Washington County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau’s advertising and public relations manager. “We’ve never really had a way to tell that to them. The (historical) houses, for example, are not necessarily open unless you’ve booked a tour. “This is a way to get those open and showcase what there is to see here that is historical, just in town, not counting Washington-on-the-Brazos for example, and Independence and Burton and Chappell Hill. There is a lot of history here — sometimes it’s hard to convey it to visitors that there’s that much here.” The tour will take you to the following locations: The Barnhill Center at the Simon Theatre, the Glissmann Drug Store Museum, the Bren-
ham Fire Museum, the Brenham Heritage Museum, Toubin Park in downtown Brenham, the Giddings Wilkin House Museum and the Giddings Stone Mansion. Only Toubin Park and the Brenham Heritage Museum were previously open to general tourists. Visitors can visit each site individually, as some are free and others charge a nominal fee. The project stems out of the local history day that has been put on for elementary and intermediary students the last three years. The day has included many of the same locations that will be featured on the “Step into the Past” tour. The question begged as to why the locations couldn’t be open for other visitors — not just once a year for students. Now that will no longer be the case. “On local history day every year, we take the kids through these sites that are not open to PAST continued on page 12

Continued from page 10 the public,â€? said Sharon Brass, a volunteer extensively involved in the tour’s development. “Since we’ve done it successfully for three years and it keeps growing, we’ve been hearing all of these requests for ‘Why can’t we have adult tours like that?’ “I’m sitting in these meetings hearing about our economy and I’m thinking, ‘Well, why not? We ought to open these places. It’s just a shame to sit on all this history and nobody gets to see it.’â€? While history day certainly paved the way for the tour, there are signiďŹ cant differences between the two. “The key difference is that when kids attend local history day, at each stop there’s a fully scripted presentation with a costumed character,â€? said Page Michel, Washington County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau president and CEO. “When these are open, let’s say on a Saturday, people will be greeted, there’ll be a video at several of the sites, and the volunteer who’s there will not be giving a presentation. This is not a guided, costume interpreter tour.â€? That’s not to say the costumed characters won’t make an appearance however, as the actors who played them for history day will show up in brief videos at some
of the sites to give visitors period-specific representations of the ďŹ gures that they portray. The tour will begin at the newly renovated Simon Theatre in downtown Brenham, which originally opened in 1925. It is there the journey kicks off with a 20-minute video entitled “The Dawn of Washington County,â€? bringing the audience up to speed on the county’s origins as well as how Brenham came to be while covering local history up until 1845. “When we decided to fold all these other historical sites into sort of a package, we thought ‘Well what a great way to launch somebody’s adventure in Brenham,’â€? Brass said. “Let’s start there with that ďŹ lm that can give them an overview of the history and then that invites them to go out and see all of these attractions.â€? The theater will be part of the tour’s launch, but a grand opening is scheduled for around a month later — close to the nine-decade anniversary of the site. “The Simon has been a longterm project,â€? said Jennifer Eckermann, manager of Main Street Brenham. “We’re expecting a grand re-opening around the buildPAST continued on page 13

If you see the old Banner article in the lobby, you’ll see the original grand opening was Nov. 25, 1925. “The tour is going to start Oct. 3, but we’ll probably be showing the 20-minute film those fi rst couple of months upstairs in the ballroom. After the Simon Theatre grand opening, we plan to show it in the restored theater auditorium. From the Simon, visitors are then able to travel around to the remaining locations at their leisure. The majority of the sites are within walking distance, with the two historical homes being the only exceptions. “From the film, you’re being told that you can walk to pretty much everything here,” Brass said. “There are only two locations you’d have to get in your car and drive to – they’re within a mile. Everything is so close.” Toubin Park, also downtown, boasts an original cistern, an important archaeological trait to many historic sites in Brenham, which was built in 1878. Corral,” Brass said. “I think we need to make a bigger deal of that. They were shooting out on Main Street on a Friday night, and that’s one of the events leading to the big fire.” The Glissmann Drug Store Museum will show visitors just how it looked in 1924, complete with a gambit of antique pharmacy equipment and a video demonstrating how Carl Glissmann himself prepared different remedies. A few blocks to the east, the Brenham Fire Museum with it’s antique trucks is sure to be a favorite of children, much like it is on local history day. Both locations were built by J.D. Giddings and are designated Texas Historic Landmarks. So “Step into the Past” this fall, and expose yourself to a side

Birthplace of Texas to mark 180th anniversary of Texas Independence 2016 will be an important year for Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, not only is it the 180th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico in 1836 at the park site, but it will also be the state park’s 100th birthday. It was March 2, 1836 when 59 delegates bravely met at Washington, Texas to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. From 1836 until 1846, the Republic of Texas proudly existed as a separate nation. Washington-on-the-Brazos is, indeed, “Where Texas Became Texas.” In the meantime, this TPWD-run state park has a full schedule of events, educational seminars and celebrations at its main attractions: Star of the Republic Museum (collections honoring the history, cultures, diversity and values of early Texans; administered by Blinn College); Independence Hall (the site in 1836 where the representatives met to write the declaration of independence); and Barrington Living History Farm (where interpreters dress, talk, work and farm as the earliest residents of the original farmstead did). The site’s Visitor Center features interactive exhibits which present BIRTHPLACE continued on page 23

Brenham is known for its baseball and rightfully so. The Cubs are seven-time state champions — the last title coming in 2010. The Brenham football team has made three appearances at state (2013, 2009 and 2002). Baseball won titles in 1970, ‘75, ‘76, ‘86, ‘87, ‘88 and 2010. Softball has also won several state championships along with individual student-athletes in track and ďŹ eld. Baseball qualiďŹ ed for the UIL Regional Finals in 2014. Two boy’s relay teams and the boy’s 100 meter dash qualiďŹ ed for state in 2014 with the 4x100 meter relay claiming bronze medals. Few places hold as much significance in Texas history as Washington County. It was there, at Washington-on-the-Brazos, that Lorenzo de Zavala and other Texian delegates assembled in 1836 to sign a declaration of independence from Mexico, and establish the Republic of Texas. For any contemporary Texan enamored by the proud history of this once-republic, a visit to Washington-on-the-Brazos and Independence Hall is as essential a pilgrimage as a visit to the Alamo. But Washington County is also
home to a lesser known vestige of more recent Texas history: the Burton Farmers Gin. Less than an hour from Washington-on-the-Brazos, and just a few football throws from Brenham, is the small town of Burton. Most people miss it, driving east to Houston or back west to Austin on U.S. 290. The speed limit around those parts is now 75 for stretches, so Burton can be a blur out the window, if you’re not looking for it. Take the time to exit the highway, however, and you’ll drive back into time. You’ll fi nd a small town, just a few blocks across in each diCOTTON continued on page 28

Continued from page 26 rection with Texas-y street names like Cedar and Brazos and Live Oak. And on Main Street, you’ll ďŹ nd the main attraction: the Burton Farmers Gin, and its proud custodian, the Texas Cotton Gin Museum. First opened in August 1914, the Burton Farmers Gin is the oldest operating cotton gin in America. At one time, more than 4,000 system gins of its kind operated in Texas alone. Today, the Burton Farmers Gin is the only survivor, and its 125 horsepower Bessemer Type IV oil engine, affectionately known as “Lady B,â€? is itself likely the only one still working anywhere in the U.S. These facts have helped earn the Burton Farmers Gin recognition by the Smithsonian Institution; designation as a Texas Historic Landmark and a National Historic Engineering Landmark; and of course, inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. The Burton Farmers Gin operated continuously from 1914 until 1974, when it ceased commercial use for good. After producing nearly 52,000 bales of cotton in 60 years, the gin lay neglected among the wildowers and the weeds for over a decade. Then, in 1986, a wayward tourist from Ohio named Doug Hutchinson spotted the gin, and snooped around inside. What he discovered was a facility largely in disrepair and disarray, yes, but still home to countless untouched artifacts of enCOTTON continued on page 29

Continued from page 28 gineering, industry, and agriculture. Upstairs in the manager’s office, Doug found all the original records and receipts from the day the gin opened, still stored away, untouched and ready for preservation. Hutchinson called the Smithsonian Institution, which confirmed he’d found something special. They also advised that if Lady B and the gin machinery could get running again, the Burton gin could claim the title of the oldest operating gin anywhere. Thus began Operation Restoration, an effort that spanned four years and exhausted dozens of dedicated volunteers and experts. Once the restoration was complete, Lady B fi red up like new, powering the original Lummus Cotton Gin Company gin stands, with their gold leafed logos; the corrugated tin facade was repainted to match its original bright silver; a new roof protected everything from overhead; and most important: raw
cotton could enter at one end, and come out ginned and baled on the other. Today, the Burton Farmers Gin is cared for by the proud board of directors and staff of the Texas Cotton Gin Museum, led by Museum Director Linda Russell and her team of volunteers, the Boll Weevils. When you go to the Texas Cotton Gin Museum, call ahead to make sure Linda is there. With sincere enthusiasm, Linda will teach you everything you can possibly know about cotton production. She’ll give you a tour of the gin itself, with insider anecdotes and expert knowledge about day to day life inside the gin. Back inside the excellent Museum (well curated by Jerry Moore), she’ll hand you cotton bolls and gin saws and drag out cotton sacks, and even gin some cotton in a replica of the original gin, invented by Eli Whitney. Spend an hour with Linda, and you’ll be humbled with appreciation for the extraordinary physi-
cal demands that cotton production made on early American farmers and plantation slaves. This, in turn, will help you appreciate the extraordinary innovations and engineering feats achieved by facilities like the Burton Farmers Gin. Today, as always, Texas leads the nation in cotton production, exporting more than $1.6 billion in cotton & cottonseed. The
Burton Farmers Gin doesn’t influence those statistics, as it just produces a few commemorative bales of cotton each year. To see one of these rare, historic cotton bales made the old school way, consider attending the Burton Cotton Gin Festival in the spring. And in the meantime, consider donating to the Museum, to preserve this Texas treasure for another 100 years to come.

The GeoTour launched in December of 2013, after placing of the caches began in June. the fi rst in the state, with other towns in the state discussing ones for their areas in the near future. If a geocacher is among the fi rst 250 to collect 25 total points — either by fi nding the geocaches, or by eating, shopping, and staying in Washington County — a cacher can receive a collectible geocoin, which can be placed in any cache that will hold it and can be tracked online. Of the 250 coins, Mills said that 150 or so have been claimed by people who have completed the tour. Most have come from the state of Texas, but Mills said that there have been people who have visited from out-of-state, like Colorado and Georgia, and out-of-country, like the Netherlands and Puerto Rico. While she said that a majority of the in-state cachers haven’t stayed multiple days in Washington County, the comments have been positive and even if someone stays only through-
out the day, it means multiple people are seeing Washington County attractions and hopefully will return. To fi nd out more about the Birthplace of Texas GeoTour and to participate, visit www. geocaching.com.

Enjoy yourself on, off land at Lake Somerville Lake Somerville State Park complex consists of four units: Birch Creek, Nails Creek, Lake Somerville Trailway, and the Somerville Wildlife Management Area. It is northwest of Brenham in Lee and Burleson counties. Birch Creek is 2,365 acres in Burleson County on the north shore, and Nails Creek consists of 3,155 acres in Lee County on the south shore near the west end of the reservoir. The two units are connected by a 13-mile trailway system. The Somerville Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of 3,180 acres with the Yegua Creek Compartment in southwest Burleson County and the Nails Creek Compartment in northeast Lee County. The Somerville Reservoir was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Work was started in June 1962, and deliberate impoundment of water was begun in January of 1967. The dam is located on Yegua Creek, 20 miles upstream from its confluence with the Brazos River,
and about two miles south of Somerville. Somerville Reservoir covers 11,630 acres with a shoreline of 85 miles. Its main purposes are flood control, municipal water supply and recreation. The state park complex was leased from the federal government in 1969 and opened in 1970. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the Somerville WMA under a license agreement and in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Flag Pond is a 350-acre impoundment in the Yegua Creek watershed; it is located within the Lake Somerville State Park along the Somerville Trailway. The pond is a natural depression which has served as wetland habitat for waterfowl wintering (mid-October to mid-February) in the Lake Somerville vicinity. Flag Pond was originally developed by a private hunting club in 1926. Enjoy, but do not disturb historical places. If you find an artifact, leave it in place and let park staff know.

SCHEDULE OF OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS: Unless noted otherwise, programs are open to all ages, but an adult must accompany any children. Dress appropriately for the season and be prepared for the weather as the events will take place in an 1850s period setting with some portions outdoors. Present through Feb. 15, 2016 — Enduring Spirit: African Americans in 19th Century Texas, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Star of the Republic Museum is celebrating Black History in Texas with a yearlong exhibit that captures the spirit of 19th-century black Texans and the challenges they faced before, during and after the Civil War. While the first African Americans in Texas were free men and women seeking opportunity and advancement, the laws of the newly formed Republic of Texas forced them out and opened the door to thousands of enslaved people who served as the backbone of the labor force for almost 30 years. Finally gaining their freedom after the Civil War, they discovered their struggle was far from over. Artifacts on display include slave records, freedmen contracts and an oath of allegiance. Stoneware pottery made at Wilson Pottery near Seguin, the fi rst African American business in Texas, is exhibited, as well as an example of the intricate
Pine Burr pattern quilt. Weekends (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) in September 2015 — Cotton Pickin’ Weekends, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.: Visitors can join the farm hands in harvesting the Barrington Farm cotton crop. The cotton has been planted, watered and weeded, and now visitors can help pick, hand gin, card and weave the beautiful “Lone Star” antique variety of cotton. Standard farm admission fees apply. Activities may vary depending on weather conditions and resource availability. Oct. 10, 2015 — Stagecoach Days, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Stagecoach Days allow visitors to experience what it was like to travel cross-country via stagecoach and learn about the Inn’s history and connection with early stage lines. There is no admission fee to visit the Inn, with a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children for stagecoach rides. Rides last approximately 15 minutes; Inn tours last 30-45 minutes. Additional activities on these days may include music from the Star of Texas Dulcimers and poem readings by a cowboy poet. Oct. 17, Nov. 21, and Dec. 19, 2015; Jan. 16, Feb. 20 and March 19, 2016 – Living History Saturday at Independence Hall and the Old Washington Townsite: 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Washington-on-the-Brazos site): Trav-
el back in time to where a nation was born in 1836. On the third Saturday of each month, staff and volunteers dressed in period clothing bring to life the people and events of Old Washington, providing a unique opportunity to discover various aspects of life surrounding the birth of the Republic of Texas. The program features activities suited for the entire family such as writing with a quill pen; signing a copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence; visiting with militia soldiers traveling through town; or playing some early Texas games. Traditional guided tours of Independence Hall will not be offered on these days. Oct. 24, 2015, Feb. 27, 2016 and March 26, 2016 — Music Makes a Celebration, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Discover the music that inspired celebration and recreation in 19th century Texas with the program “Music Makes a Celebration,” presented by Homestead Strings at Fanthorp Inn. Relive the joy that weary travelers and local citizens experienced as the Inn provided the largest accommodations in the area to host celebrations, parties and the occasional escape from the rugged Texas frontier. mately 35-40 minutes. Thursdays, October 2015 — Home School Days: Every Thursday in October, the staffs at the Star of the Republic Museum and Barrington Farm present Childhood in Early Texas, an interactive, hands-on program for the entire family, targeting students ages 5-12. At the Museum, visitors will learn about childhood chores, clothes and schools, and then make some old-fashioned toys to take home. At Barrington Farm, they can experience life on the 1850s era farm to learn more about the crops, livestock and daily life of early Texans. No minimum group size required. Hours: 10:30 a.m-2:30 p.m. Cost: $8/ child, $6/adult for both attractions. Advance reservations and payment required by calling Donna Barker at 936-878-2461, ext. 245. Oct. 10, 2015 – Henry Fanthorp’s Wake – A Look at Death and Mourning in 19th Century Texas: “Henry’s Wake” will take a look at the ceremonies and rituals of death in 19th century Texas. The unfortunate death of Henry Fanthorp, proprietor of one of Texas’ most successful stagecoach inns, on Oct. 31, 1867 reminds us of the fragile state of life in the 19th century. This famous innkeeper and his wife were but a small portion of the souls who met their demise at Fanthorp’s stagecoach Inn. Presentations (not recommend-
ed for children under 10 years) will be by reservation only for 7, 7:15, 7:30, 7:45, 8:00 and 8:15 p.m. and will last approximately 50 minutes. This program is recommended for adults only. Oct. 24 and 25, 2015 — Labor of Thine Hands: Trades in Early Texas, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.: Ponder for a moment all of the skills and trades practiced that people rely upon daily: auto mechanics, carpenters, electricians and plumbers to name a few. Just as people today need skilled laborers to live, so, too, did the farmers of early Texas. Barrington Farm presents this expanded program where demonstrators will exhibit some of the many skills needed by our ancestors, from blacksmiths to tailors and potters. Program is free with general admission to the Farm. Reservations not required. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015 — “Republic of Texas Mosaic: Cultural Diversity from Independence to Statehood,” 9 a.m.-5 p.m.: First educational symposium at WOB’s Conference Center with four distinguished scholars discussing topics related to cultural diversity in the Texas Republic: experiences of Tejanos; women’s experiences; experiences of German Texans; and Native American experiences in the Republic. Chappell Hill Chappell Hill is situated in the southeast portion of Washington County, which lies halfway between Houston and Austin on U.S. 290. The town of Chappell Hill was founded in 1847 by Mary Hargrove Haller, granddaughter of Robert Wooding Chappell, for whom she named the town. Mary Haller’s husband, Jacob, was the town’s first postmaster. Mary Haller purchased the town site and it was divided into blocks, with streets and alleys laid off in a regular pattern. The sale of lots began in the fall of 1849. Situated in the heart of Stephen F. Austin’s original colony, the Chappell Hill area had seen earlier efforts at settlement along nearby creeks. In the late 1840s, the town attracted settlers from prominent families of the Old
Come Shop in Chappell Hill
South who were drawn to the fertile land of the Brazos River with its abundant stands of native cedar. The area became an agricultural community with cotton the principal crop. Jacob and Mary Haller also built the Stagecoach Inn of Chappell Hill in 1850, which they operated until 1859 and continued under new ownership until 1871. Because the Inn was about halfway between Houston and Austin, it was a frequent stopping place for travelers along two major stagecoach lines. The town became an important part of the Republic of Texas and later the State of Texas before the Civil War. The population reached a maximum of about 3,000 people; at the time, San Antonio and Galveston were the largest towns at around
8,000 people. A sawmill, a railroad line, five churches, and a Masonic Lodge were built in the area. Two colleges, Soule University for men and Chappell Hill Female College for women, were founded in 1856. The men of Chappell Hill formed part of the First Texas Lancers cavalry regiment during the Civil War and fought in Missouri, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Men from Chappell Hill served in numerous renowned Confederate units, including The Texas Brigade and Terry’s Texas Rangers, and saw action in most of the major engagements of the Civil War. In addition, the Soule University building was used as a field hospital. The men of Chappell Hill saw action in a number of renowned Confederate units, including The Texas Brigade
and Terry’s Texas Rangers. By the mid-19th century the town gained prominence in the region, boasting sawmills, a railroad line, a Masonic Lodge, five churches, and two institutes of higher learning (the Chappell Hill Female College and Soule University for males founded in 1856). The Civil War and Reconstruction era brought violent changes to Chappell Hill, as to all the South. But the terrible yellow fever epidemic of 1867 decimated the population to such an extent that the town never fully recovered. Entire families perished, and many others left never to return. Many men who survived combat in the war lost their lives just two years after the war’s end. The town never recovered and faded into obscurity. Polish

Chappell Hill immigrants, mostly from the German partition, began to appear in the 1870s and the area was re-settled, though it did not reach the status of before. In 1889, Father Grabinger from Brenham’s St. Mary’s established St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church. Denizens of Polish ancestry can still be found in the area surrounding the church and throughout Washington and Austin counties. Yet the town has survived and has entered a new era of growth and prosperity, while maintaining its historic charm. Washington County is revered as the home of the “Birthplace of Texas.” On March 2, 1836, in the community of Washingtonon-the-Brazos, 59 delegates gathered under the direction of Sam Houston and George Childress to draft and sign the Declaration of Texas Independence. Following the receipt of fateful news from the Alamo, these men declared Texas “a free and sovereign nation” and went on to fight at the Battle of San Jacinto. This area is rich with historical sites from the Republic of Texas era. If you lived more than 150 years ago what would you have to gather, and make yourself, to be able to have light at night? Seeing in the dark is something we take for granted today, but making your own light is frugal and satisfying. On Barrington Farm, the home of the last president of Texas, Anson Jones, they would have been using purchased and homemade candles. Relax in Rustic Round Top, one of the smallest incorporated communities in Texas, is on the old La Bahia Road between La Grange and Brenham in Fayette County. The earliest settlers were Englishmen who came to the area from other parts of the United States. The family of Stephen Townsend arrived from Florida in 1826, and the name Townsend was the first to be associated with the site of Round Top. The family established a Presbyterian church, Florida Chapel and founded a Masonic lodge. The Townsend family had the distinction of sending more men to the battle of San Jacinto than any other family. Joel Robinson, another Round Top resident, was the captor of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. His father, John Robinson, was a member of the First Congress of Texas. John Rice Jones Jr. settled in the Round Top area in
1831 and in 1835 was made the first postmaster general of Texas by the provisional government. Other important names associated with the earliest settlers were Taylor, Ledbetter and Alexander. The Ledbetter land was the site of the first Round Top Academy. By the mid-1830s Round Top was identified as Jones Post Office. The English were soon supplemented by Germans. In the early 1840s, Alwin H. Soergel, author, historian, musician, and member of the Adelsverein, settled in the Round Top area, bringing with him the beginnings of the Germanic traditions that characterize the area. He built a white house with an octagonal tower, which by 1847 was listed as the United States post office, with Henry A. Robertson as postmaster. The odd-shaped tower gave rise to the name Round Top.

Round Top By 1850 Round Top had a population of 150, two stores, two blacksmith shops, two taverns, a post office and a line of tri-weekly stages serving the predominantly German citizenry. According to some sources the first Round Top Fourth of July celebration, held in 1851, gave the community the distinction of having the oldest contin-
uous Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi. During the Civil War, Round Top served as a recruiting station for the northern half of the county. In 1866 the Rev. Adam Neuthard organized a Lutheran congregation; the massive old stone church completed in 1867 remained in use until 1991,

The first settlers were prosperous Anglo-American plantation owners who came here as early as 1826 and were active in political and military affairs. By the late 1840s, German immigrants settled here. The original 1880s courthouse in Round Top burned in 1924 and was rebuilt at the present location

on the town square. Major restorations were accomplished by the Bybee Foundation on Henkel Square, by the James Dick Foundation on Festival Hill, and by Miss Ima Hogg at Winedale. Round Top has become an internationally recognized cultural center for the arts and education through the programs of the International Festival-Institute, founded in 1971. The 1,200-seat concert hall at Festival Hill is the permanent home of the Texas
Festival Orchestra. Residents have always taken pride in the care and preservation of their town. Those who have relocated here from places more metropolitan have learned to treasure this pocket of rural tranquility. Today, Round Top has found new supporters, who along with life-long residents and those descended from the earliest settlers, are working to preserve this unique living legacy.

The History of HISTORY OF CARMINE Carmine was founded on December 24, 1883, by Benjamin J. Thigpen, a highly regarded physician. He purchased 46 acres of land for $230 and plotted the townsite as “Sylvan”, but subsequently changed the name to Carmean, after one of the original highly-respected settlers of the area, Newton Carmean. The spelling of the town was changed to Carmine on June 15, 1892, to eliminate confusion for the postal service with the town of Cameron. The railroad opened a small station in the new city of Carmine where farmers could ship their products to market. By 1900 Carmine had four general stores, four saloons, two blacksmith shops, a new paper
