Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce
Breckenridge - A City Rich in History From the harsh frontier days, through the drought of 1886, to the oil boom era and into the 21st century, Breckenridge has thrived, survived and settled in as a unique small town situated in the middle of Stephens County. Officially, organized in 1876, along with the county, the town was originally named in honor of John Cabell Breckinridge, the 14th vice president of the U.S. and an nd a Confed-
erate general during the Civil War. In the 1880, the misspelling was changed to what it is today, “Breckenridge.” Home to about 5,800 residents in 2016, Breckenridge grew in population to, by some accounts, more than 40,000, during the oil boom years between 1918 to the mid1920s. Although area oil production died down over the years, Breckenridge continues to be home to many oil-related busi-

nesses. Additionally, many Breckenridge and Stephens County residence continue to be involved in ranching, raising cattle, sheep and goats on the rocky landscape of northcentral Texas. For more detailed information on the rich history of Breckenridge and Stephens County, visit the Swenson Memorial Museum and the Breckenridge Library.

A Note from the
City of Breckenridge
Welcome to Breckenridge! When you get here and “kick the curbs” to find out what the community is like, you’ll find several things. First, we have some places in town that are worn and tired like everywhere else, but you’ll also find that we are working on that. Downtown revitalization is going on, a new Walmart store was opened in November 2014, four new businesses went into the old Walmart building, new restaurants have opened up, construction crews are filling up some of the motels and RV parks due to all the construction in town, sub-standard structures are being removed,
recreational area additions in the park such as the disc golf course, basketball courts, and the planned walking trail, skateboard park and new playground equipment which are coming. Oh! Don’t forget the new Breck Trade Days events being held six times a year. We have high hopes of becoming “Canton West”. Second, you’ll find friendly people with can-do attitudes. West Texas folks are hard to beat. People still wave to you from their cars and pickups or on the street. There are lots of churches, and people still have a Andy McCuistion, respectful Breckenridge City Manager reverence for God, and raised in west Texas, but the flag, our my wife is an east Texas citymilitary, and girl. A Note from the Breckenridge Independent School District Why are we here? I am not asking that question in the existential, philosophical way it is so often posed. Rather, what is the purpose of public schools? Believe it or not, in America, public schools began in 1647 with “The Old Deluder Satan Act.” The Governor and General Court of Massachusetts Bay, even before the formation of these United States, issued a decree that “every township in this jurisdiction, after the Lord hath increased them to fifty households shall forthwith appoint one within their town to teach all such children as shall resort to him to write and read, whose wages shall be paid either by the parents or masters of such children, or by the inhabitants in general…it is further ordered, that when any town shall increase to the number of one hundred families or householders, they shall set up a grammar school, the master thereof being able to instruct youth so far as they may be fitted for the university.” So began the public school movement which quickly spread across America; schools set up and paid for by communities “to the end that learning may not be buried in the grave of our forefathers.” Now, here we are in Breckenridge, America, some 369 years later, and we are still here for the same purpose, to teach kids to read and write, and allow them to be prepared to attend University. Whereas the purpose for teaching reading and writing was originally, to allow kids to be able to read Scripture, we now have expanded our purpose to be able to read Scripture, literature, history, and a host of other infor-

Swenson Memorial Museum
Visitors to the newly renovated Swenson Memorial Museum will be enlightened when they enter the refurbished museum with new lighting, new carpet, a paint job and new exhibits. The museum is located in the historic First National Bank building, at 116 W. Walker. The Swenson Memorial Museum opened in 1976, as part of the Breckenridge and Stephens County Centennial celebration and the Bicentennial celebration for the United States. Concerned citizens of Stephens County saw the need to preserve the unique heritage and rich history of Stephens County. They began collecting artifacts, photographs and other historical documents that depicted the historical beginnings of Breckenridge and Stephens County. That preservation has continued to this day with more of an emphasis on what is unique and relevant to the history of Breckenridge and Stephens County. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Among the new collections is the extensive Basil Clemons Exhibit, which includes some of the historic cameras he used and a large collection of photographs Clemons took during the Oil Boom era through events in Stephens County until 1940. Clemons took a wide array of photos that depicted every aspect of life in Breckenridge and the county. Clemons photos tell the unique story of Stephens County and the city of Breckenridge as it grew into a busy hub of activity with the merging of four railroads in 1920 and later an airport. The early antics of our resident inventor of gliders, Earl Akin, is well documented. The exhibit of Breckenridge schools has been moved to the first floor, which includes an older Buckaroo cheerleading outfit, Dr. Payne’s medical bag in Buckaroo green and Buckaroo banners and photographs. The historic rural schools of Stephens County is combined and featured on the second floor exhibit, which includes a photographic history of the rural schools in the county. - 14 -
The carpet has been removed in the music room to reveal beautiful wood floors. That room has now been combined to include music and church exhibits. The Western Collection Exhibit has been expanded to include items found at historic Picketville, along with a woman’s sidesaddle, other saddles, early branding irons, a map of historic ranches in the county and a large Barbed Wire Collection, donated by the late John Williams The Military Exhibit has been moved to the southeast corner of the first floor and includes memorabilia from World Wars I and II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. Also, it includes a wide assortment of uniforms worn by all military services and West Point. A large collection of Depression Glass has been donated and subsequently sorted and on display on the second floor, in a corner room, to catch the light that further enhances the glassware collection. Additionally, there is a new Porcelain Doll Collection on display in the Toy Room, which includes historic toys, on the second floor. The Swenson Memorial Museum was delighted to be selected to exhibit the Jerry Tubbs Collection of memorabilia from his days as an All-State Lineman with the Buckaroo State Championship years of 1951-52. His widow graciously added items from his playing days at Oklahoma and with the Dallas Cowboys, both as a player and coach. Football fans should enjoy browsing through this collection. Also, Coby Dye has revamped the Fossil Exhibit and included materials from his own private collection, which is prominently displayed in the new glass cases acquired from the historic Nap
Thomas Drug Store that was a fixture in Breckenridge for many decades. On the second floor, the law offices of Ross Elliott, local attorney, and Judge D.T. Bowles, has been combined with Elliott’s Law Library. Local clubs and civic organizations are represented in the new Club Room, which includes historic items from the Elks, Lions, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs that have made an impact on Breckenridge during its development from the Oil Boom era to what it is today. The Swenson family, for which the museum is named, has their own exhibit, which includes a dining table and chairs and other furniture unique to the Swenson family from their historic home built in 1909. There also are two paintings of the historic house in the exhibit. For those interested in family research in genealogy, there is
an extensive collection of family histories, along with Stephens County and Breckenridge historical records that are made available for researchers. More and more research and reference materials have been assembled and are now available in the two bank vaults. Copies of any records can be obtained for a nominal fee. Additionally, the J.D. Sandefer Oil Annex building, that was dedicated in 1983, has also had an exterior face-lift and is being prepared to be open upon request and possibly on a more regular basis. Their is a possibility of having a spokesman guide made available on site to talk about the Oil Boom era. On the first floor, there is a gift shelf that includes postcards, unique to Breckenridge and Stephens County, books relevant to county history and paperweights from the historic Half-Way Oak, located south of town.

Breckenridge Disc Golf Course The Breckenridge Disc Golf Course, located in the 600 block of E. Walker (behind the American Legion Building), offers fun for the entire family and all age levels. Disc Golf is relatively new to Breckenridge, as the course was completed in the spring of 2013. A new addition came in the spring of 2016, as the course installed concrete tee pads. The Breckenridge Disc Golf Association was formed shortly after the course opened. The BDGC is a nine-hole course that offers a variety of elevation changes and challenging holes. While each hole is a par three, the No. 4 hole is the longest and perhaps most challenging at 355 feet. The total distance for nine holes is 2,335 feet and the total for 18 holes is 4,250 feet. The city street that is along
the boundary of the course and the Breckenridge City pool fence is considered out of bounds. Disc golf provides a low-cost, healthy activity for people of all ages. A round of disc golf generally takes about 90 minutes and players enjoy mild aerobic conditioning. Many people who would never consider jogging or walking find themselves covering a mile or more during

a round of disc golf. Disc golf tends to decrease undesirable activity in underutilized areas of a park. While disc golf can be played with any type of flying disc, most players prefer discs designed specifically for disc golf. For more information about Breckenridge Disc Golf Course and the Breckenridge Disc Golf Association, contact Darrell Woodall at 254-246-0032.
The Historic National Theatre in the restoration of the historic National Theatre. The FOHB took possession of the pile of rubble and brick side walls that was known as the future home of the National Theatre in 1996. The rubble was clear out and a makeshift stage was constructed to present a fundraiser play in an effort to garner some donations for the restoration of the theatre. That first summer after the rubble was cleared out (1998) and before the roof was constructed, the late Cavanaugh Garza wrote a play that was performed on the makeshift stage, “Pictures, Planes and Crude Oil,” that was based on the famed Breckenridge aviator, Earl Akin, and the town’s photographer, Basil Clemons, both part of Stephens County history. Those who attended, sat on metal Serving great Italian food in the folding chairs Lake Country of Texas! and tried to get as close Open for lunch to the brick Now Serving Gyros! wall on the A delicious, light meal! and dinner! west side of the property, where there was semblance of shade located. The historic National Theatre located in downtown Breckenridge has made an amazing comeback from the collapsed roof and pile of rubble, with the two existing brick walls standing to the west and the east. Initially, Joe Rex Brown and Charles Kuhn owned the property, which consisted of the brick side walls and the pile of rubble from the collapsed roof. Subsequently, a group of interested volunteers formed the Friends of Historic Breckenridge (FOHB), who were organized to promote and encourage the restoration and revitalization of the downtown and led the way

porters were able to see the vision for a restored theatre and donations began to filter in for support of the project. That play has been performed a few times since then and always entertains the audience. The exterior of the theatre was restored to match the 1920 photos of the historic, downtown Breckenridge. The new task was re-creating the interior so that it could be used by the community for a variety of events. The National Theatre of 1920 shows the theatre snugly set next to the historic Sager Hotel, to the west, which is now the law office of Gary Trammel. Over the years, various fundraiser events were held and private donations and grants were used over the intervening years since 2009 and the historic National Theatre once again became an active part of the Breckenridge community. Subsequently, the adjoining property was purchased on the east side, which now houses the reception room, kitchen, restrooms and dressing rooms. Additionally, the old restored bar was added on the west side of the theatre, which has provided a concession stand for the theatre. During the last few years, stage drapes were added along with a lighting system for the stage. The latest addition were the new seats, which were added last fall. There are now approximately 235 seats with a center aisle.
Still needed is an adequate sound system. The National Theatre has been a great asset to the community and several memorable performances have been enjoyed by the community. Among those, is the children’s Christmas play, “3 Wise Men and a Baby,” which has become an annual event. The Junior Forum has used the theatre to hold their annual “Mr. Breck Pageant,” which is always well attended by students, parents, faculty and members of the Breckenridge community. Additionally, there have been community events that included the brilliant performances of the Quebe Sisters. Most recently, local artist, T.C. Fambro, entertained the audience at the National Theatre. In the
summer of 2014, the Missoula Children’s Theatre group came for a one-week, Student Theatre Workshop that finished with more than 50 local young actors and actresses taking part in a production of “Robin Hood.” The Missoula group is returning this summer for another Children’s Summer Theatre, slated for July 1116. Lela Russell is the advisor for the program. At the completion of the workshop, the performers will present “Black Beard, The Pirate,” in two performances open to the public. One performance is set for Friday evening, July 15 and the second performance will be a matinee at 2 p.m. July 16. This is an excellent opportunity for the youth to participate. The FOHB also attempts p to bring a quality children’s mov-

ie to the National Theatre once a month but there have been some equipment problems that required attention and they hope to have those available soon. Children can enjoy those movies for $2 and adults are $4, plus an operational concession stand is available to get the whole movie experience. The FOHB has worked tirelessly to continue to bring interesting and fun programs to the National Theatre in Breckenridge. The public can continue their support by attending the special events and help to improve the theatre for everyone’s enjoyment and that of the children of our community. For additional information, contact Hallee Pesch at hrpesch@yahoo.com or any p y y member of the FOHB board.

The Breckenridge American More than 90 years ago, the Breckenridge American was established, and it remains the only newspaper in Stephens County today. In March of 2016, Graham News Inc., including the Breckenridge American, was acquired by Palo Pinto Communications, LP. Its principal, Jim Moser, is also the owner of Moser Community Media out of Brenham, which focuses on the management of small to mid-sized community newspapers in Texas. The buyout also includes the Graham Leader, the Olney Enterprise, the Jacksboro Herald-Gazette, the Burleson Star and other publications produced by GNI. Prior to that, MediaNews Group of Denver, Colo., had purchased the Breckenridge American and radio stations
KLXK-FM and KROO-AM and added them to the company’s wholly owned division, Graham Newspapers Inc. MediaNews Group purchased the newspaper from Elaine and Virgil Moore III. Prior to that, Frances and Virgil Moore Jr. owned the newspaper from 1963 until 1989. Gary Loftus took over as publisher in March of 2016 and Tony Pilkington has been the managing Editor since October 2015. The Breckenridge American is published each Wednesday and Saturday. Subscriptions for residents of Stephens and adjoining counties cost $36.00 per year to have the paper mailed to your home. The newspaper features city, county and regional news, special feature articles and sports, as well as notices of

meetings, announcements, obituaries, schedules and other community news.
