ays Consolidated Independent School District (Hays CISD) is a proud partner of the City of Kyle and its surrounding communities in serving more than 18,750 students. Even with continued growth, the school district offers a world-class education with a friendly, small-town feel. Hays CISD features a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center; a dual-language magnet program at two elementary campuses; a science/technology/engineering/math (STEM) magnet program at two elementary schools; and Project Lead the Way designation at both of the comprehensive high schools. Students can choose from a wide range of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses designed to provide them with the skills needed to enter today’s workforce. We provide students with rigorous and relevant instruction to help them succeed in our highdemand, high-skilled working environment of the 21st century. Examples of some of the courses include culinary arts, cosmetology, horticulture, graphic design, welding, engineering, robotics, and health sciences. In addition to providing students a rigorous academic curriculum, Hays CISD recognizes the value of extracurricular activities to enrich the student experience, providing opportunities to participate in the award-winning band, choir, visual and performing arts, and athletic programs. Additionally, after-school clubs are hosted at each campus with offerings as varied as students’ interests. Austin Community College (ACC) Hays Campus offers 235 degree/certificate options,

SCHOOLS
Welcome to the Hays Consolidated Independent School District over 100 workforce education degrees, and 90 workforce certificates. ACC’s presence in Kyle extends learning for students with its flexible class schedules and affordable in-district tuition. In partnership with CommuniCare, Hays CISD features a district WELL Clinic, a 3,700 square foot facility that serves nearly 7,000 students annually. The clinic recently expanded its hours to better accommodate family schedules and now serves both privately insured and uninsured students and siblings. The clinic also provides behavioral health services. The WELL Clinic helps keep students in school and reaching their full potential. The ongoing projects funded by the 2014 bond provide improvements to better meet the challenges of our growing student population. With the installation of surveillance cameras, keyless entry systems, phone system upgrades, and entry way renovations, the district is enhancing safety and security. With the addition of student work stations, ceiling-mounted projectors, and expanding wireless network capacity, students and teachers have broader access to technology. Other projects include purchasing additional buses, building a new Career and Technology addition at Lehman High School, and improvements at Hays High School.
Looking ahead, Hays CISD is excited about the discussions for High School # 3 and soon will begin to explore options for a bond to put before voters in 2017. The need for new elementary schools is ever more apparent and will certainly be included in bond planning. The Dr. T.C. McCormick Jr. Middle School will open its doors in the fall to welcome its first classes of McCormick Tigers. New career and technology offerings at the high schools will widen the door of opportunity for our students nearing entry into the workforce. There is much to look forward to in 2016! All of these successes are built upon a solid foundation of community support dating back over 100 years. Kyle citizens invest their time and talents by volunteering at our schools and district events. We are excited to invite you to join this proud tradition. Growing up in Kyle
The Hays Free Press recently had the opportunity to gather nine Kyle residents who hold many of the city’s earliest memories. They were gathered for the purpose of sharing those memories and to document the changes in Kyle’s evolution. The participants were Red Simon, Jean Bales, Blanche Richmond, Mabel Fields, Nancy Kercheville Thomas, Frank Ortunio, Wynette Barton, Patsy Scott Brewington and Jane Kirkham. This group of business owners, caretakers, teachers and volunteers shared complimentary memories about their relationships with each other, their families and their connection with the growing town. See some of their stories on the following pages.

Familiar faces relive old memories of Kyle Red Simon Red Simon was born three miles east of Kyle in 1926. His mother passed away when he was eight years old and was raised by his dad. He was a businessman who started the Ford dealership in San Marcos and a former Kyle School Board member.
Nancy Kercheville Thomas Nancy Kercheville was born in San Antonio in 1928 to parents Alex B. and Rachel Thompkins Kercheville. Nancy’s grandfather, John Williams Thompkins was the first mayor of Kyle who had a mercantile store on the corner where Centerfield Sports Bar is now. Her dad and her uncle Bob started the Bon Ton, where the new Kyle City Hall is now, with Lex Word in 1926, and her dad then went on to open a Pontiac dealership in San Marcos. Nancy raised two children – Petra and Randy Graef – that she and her husband adopted from Germany.
Mabel “Dolly” Smith Fields Mabel Fields has lived most of her 92 years here in Kyle. “Mother’s people came from New Orleans and Daddy’s people came from Kentucky,” she said. She explained that her grandfather was a cook on a wagon train that used to come to Kyle and her grandmother Ellen Proctor is said to have lived to be 118 years old. Mabel was close to many of the original Kyle families and was constantly taking care of neighbors’ kids even though she didn’t have kids of her own. She was especially close to Nancy Kercheville’s family. “She (Nancy) and I played as kids,”
Fields said. “My mother worked for her mother and we played for, gosh, I don’t know. We’ve been together ever since ... so I helped raise her kids and been taking care of the grand babies ... Sometimes there were 14 or 15 a day in the yard playing,” she added.
Blanche Richmond Originally from Nebraska, Blanche was bound for California in the 1940s to start a new career, but she stopped in Cheyenne, Texas where she met her future husband from Kyle, Wallace Richmond, who was working in north Texas. The couple eventually moved back to Kyle in 1950. Wynette Barton commented to Blanche, “When you got here, you were the talk of the town … People would say, “You know, Wallace married this marvelous girl and she was so smart, energetic and willing to do anything. And we didn’t have that many people moving in here, so you were quite the thang.” In addition to running The Gift Shop in Kyle for 26 years, Blanche was instrumental in starting the Kyle Library, reorganizing the Chamber of Commerce they had back then, serving on a committee that helped remodel the Old City Hall and helped start the Quilters Club.
Frank Ortunio Frank Ortunio was born in Austin and raised in Kyle. His father worked for local businessmen Fritz Miller and Edwin Miller painting houses. “He would make me go with him and paint houses and I hated it. I hated it but we didn’t have nothing and I needed to go help make a living after I graduated school,” Ortunio said. He and his father worked many years for Cecil Ruby of Ruby Ranch and had an ongoing working relationship with the Ruby family until Cecil sold
the ranchland they were working on to Jack Dahlstrom, Cecil’s father-inlaw. Dahlstrom took Ortunio and three other young men from Buda to Dallas to work on property up there, which was expected to be a two-year project. The men returned 11 years later. Soon after, in 1989, the controversy over the new Kyle prison erupted. Ortunio and a friend, Jack Mudd campaigned to have the prison come in. Ortunio and Mudd ended up applying for jobs at the prison when it finally got approved and Ortunio still works there today.
Patsy Scott Brewington Patsy Scott was born in Kyle in the “Old Teasley House,” and graduated from Kyle High School. Her father built most of the houses in the Scott Subdivision, a small quiet neighborhood on the south side of downtown that used to be a farm where she was raised. Her late husband Lee Sturdivant was mayor 1996 to 1998. She raised four kids – Freddy, J.D., Cindy and Sandy.
Jean Bales Jean Bales is modest about her contributions to the city. “Was on the city council one year. Ran for school board and got beat,” she said Jean is a sister-in-law to Oran Bales, for whom the Hays High School Gym is named after.
Wynette “Tutta” Barton and Jane Kirkham
Sisters Wynette and Jane Word were born to Lex and Bobby Word. Their father, Lex, was born in Kyle to William Alexander and Mamie Sledge Word. Their mother, Bobby, came to Kyle to teach in 1929. Both Wynette and Jane graduated from Kyle High School, and both attended Baylor University – Wynette for two years before marrying Bob Barton. She then attended Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) and graduated from that university. Jane graduated from Baylor, where she met her husband, Calvin Kirkham. Both sisters eventually returned to Kyle after living and working in other places. Their brother, the oldest sibling, died at the age of 14, and Nancy Word Osgood (sister between Wynette and Jane) also graduated from Kyle High and attended Baylor University. She is married to John Osgood, who is from Uhland. Nancy and John live in Austin. See these long-time Kyle residents’ collective stories on the following pages.

And so the stories go...
So, why the slanted floors? It’s been said that “Old Man” Harwell – a prominent figure in the Baptist church – mandated that the floors in old Kyle City Hall be made slanted so people couldn’t dance there, according to some long-time Kyle residents. Years before, Nancy Kercheville recalled witnessing her grandfather James P. Kercheville die in 1938 in the Kyle School gym when she was a young child. “It was a square dance in the evening. He was having such a good time and he fell over and he was gone. He had a heart attack.” Red Simon was at the dance and recalled his memory of the evening. “I saw your granddaddy fall over,” Red said to Nancy. “They had been dancing and they were all around the piano trying to talk about what kind of music they where going to play and he just dropped dead. Like you said, Mr. Harwell, he didn’t believe in dancing. After that they said, ‘see what happens if you dance?’ Didn’t have a dance a long time after that.”

So Jane’s dad said maybe he should not be deacon anymore. The preacher backpedaled and Lex Word remained a deacon. So, when the dancing issue came up again the night of the BTU meeting, Jane was conflicted. But fortunately for her, a young girl in front of her spoke up and said, “I’m going to dance,” Jane recalled, and that made her feel better about her decision. “And I remember you (Red) were the swing vote on that. So thanks. It was fun and nobody died.” “It broke the ice,” said Nancy, “because they had dances after that in the gym. They had those new floors in there and we had to take our shoes off… When I walk in there now I almost feel guilty.” Stories continued on page 12

Cecil Bales broke a lot of hearts Jean Bales, originally, Jean Pyland wasn’t born here but moved here when she was in high school. Her sister married Kyle lawyer Charles Young and she lived with them early on. One day, while babysitting her sister and brother-in-law’s kids, she had to pay a grocery bill at the Bon Ton where she was to meet her future husband Cecil Bales. “It was kind of an elevated counter and he was writing out the bill,” she said “and I fell in love with his hands. I thought he had the most beautiful hands.” Jean and Cecil got acquainted during her trips to the Bon Ton and one day when Cecil had to deliver a washing machine to San Marcos, he asked her to ride with him. The two became an item and later married. But Jean said she felt resentment from some of the girls around town. “All the young people would get him (Cecil) to take them to a movie – the Strawn girls and all them – before we married. They resented me ‘cause he didn’t want to take them anymore.” Jane Kirkham attested to the fact that even in her family Cecil was missed. He had become a fixture around the Word home. “I was so upset,” she said. “he was part of our family.”
Blanche’s gift shop – The Gift Shop
Cecil Bales with Wynett and Jane Word’s brother Lex, who died at a very young age.
Blanche Richmond moved to Kyle in 1950 with her husband Wallace Richmond, a civil engineer whose family had lived in Kyle since the early 1800s. The two built a house on Center Street on land purchased from the Sledges. Wallace worked for Mr. Yarrington on his ranch, “running 100 acres of oxen,” said Blanche. Blanche, from 1957 to 1984, opened and ran The Gift Shop in downtown Kyle … through good times and bad. “When we had the gift shop, people didn’t have anything, but they were so nice to shop from us,” she said. Jane Kirkham added that nearly every wedding gift came from The Gift Shop. Nancy Kercheville recalls when her son was five or six years old, he would go over to Nancy’s parents’ house near the Auction Oak, pick pecans and then sell them to neighbors. “Brother McCay was one of his best customers,” she said. “But he would take that money and go down to Blanche’s gift shop and buy my Christmas present or my birthday present. I still have some of those things, Blanche.”

Two local boys named “Tex” almost face off in the 1946 World Series Red Simon recalls one of the biggest names to come out of Kyle – Cecil Carlton Hughson, a.k.a. Tex Hughson of the Boston Red Sox. Hughson had a less-known Buda counterpart: Jack Dalton Creel, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals and who also went by the nickname “Tex.” Had Creel not suffered an injury prior to the 1946 World Series, the Big Show would have featured a pitcher from both Buda and Kyle playing against each other. But Hughson had a more successful career and became the local celebrity. Simon remembers
Hughson coming to the Kyle school to talk to the students as a special treat. He recalls Hughson telling the assembly, “People always ask me, ‘Tex, where are you from?’ They say, ‘Aw, I feel bad. We never heard of Kyle, Texas.” To which Tex replied, “Well don’t feel bad, most people from Kyle, Texas have never heard of Boston, Massachussetts.” Hughson ended his professional baseball career in 1947 at the age of 33 and joined his dad and uncle at Hughson Meat Company in San Marcos until it closed in the 1990s.

Scott worked for a water company until the city bought it around 1940 and hired Mr. Scott to run the waterworks for the city. “He was not only the water person,” said Wynette Barton, “He more or less was Kyle’s only employee.” Scott had quite an impact on the city. Scott Street in Kyle runs along a neighborhood that Mr. Scott developed in the 1950s from family farmland. Patsy recalled living on the farm before it was developed, “We had three or four thousand chickens
at a time. I hated chickens.” But the Scott Subdivision wasn’t the only thing Mr. Scott left behind. During his lifetime, Scott built and maintained the fountain that stood before the Old Kyle City Hall building. “He took it on his own accord, and probably his own expense, to build that round pool in front of city hall,” said Barton. Scott maintained the fountain until he retired and couldn’t take care of it anymore. The circular structure still remains in front of the building, but filled with a flower bed or the Kyle Christmas tree during the holidays.
