General Fishing Report: The reservoir has been affected by golden alga blooms, especially in 2001, 2003, and 2010. Striped bass are stocked in most years and provide a fair shery with good growth potential and strong ghting characteristics. The lake record is 34.19 pounds. White bass are abundant and of good size. Largemouth bass are found in this reservoir. Florida-strain largemouths have been stocked and help provide trophy potential, as evidenced by the lake record of 16.02 pounds. Crappie are fair, and sun sh are
present with some large individuals available for harvest. Channel, blue, and athead cat sh are all present, with some especially large blue cats. Most of the lake shore is made of large to cobblesize rock. The lower end has scenic rock cliffs and bluffs, while the upper end spreads into shallower areas with shoreline vegetations. Points and dropoffs can be found throughout the lake. Many docks provide habitat for sh, and so do standing timber and laydowns. At certain times of the year, aquatic vegetation is also found. Brush piles and arti cial sh attractors have been placed in the Cedar Creek arm of this reservoir. Anglers may use GPS in conjunction with a sh nder to locate these structures. Largemouth bass can be found throughout the lake and can be caught on any of the typical bass baits. Be prepared to sh 10- to 25-foot depths. In this clear water, try using as light a line as possible. Con-
centrate on submerged vegetation when you nd it. Striped bass anglers look for birds feeding on bait driven to the surface by schools of hungry stripers. Use live shad or arti cial bait. White bass action can be very good during prespawn and the spring spawning run, especially up towards the river mouth. Jigs and spoons or slabs are recommended baits. Cat sh action can be good for all species. Costello Island and above are likely spots. Use cut bait, chicken livers, prepared stink bait, live shiners or sun sh. Crappie can be found around brush piles and docks. In spring, sh the backs of coves for spawning sh. Crappie will be found at different depths depending on time of year and water conditions; be prepared to search for them. Canoeing the Scenic Brazos River POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE
CAMPING PICNIC TABLES
DAM
Today the section of the Brazos just below the Morris Sheppard Dam offers canoeing enthusiasts a most rewarding view of rugged cliffs, high bluffs, and cross-timber terrain. Angling opportunities abound along the 20-mile stretch between the dam and Highway 4. There are no public campgrounds on the river, but numerous gravel bars can be used as overnight camp sites, although campers should be alert for possible rises of the river during rain storms or as the result of water released through the dam. Properly adjoining the river is privately owned. Campers are urged to clean up their sites and pack away any trash or refuse in order to preserve the pristine beauty of the region for others.

The Brazos River has one of the most extensive watersheds in Texas, and in the area surrounding Possum Kingdom, it provides spectacular scenery. Ages ago, Indians hunted along the banks of the Brazos and conquistadors explored its canyons. The fearsome Comanches once used the numerous hollows the river had carved from the native limestone as hide-outs from the U.S. Cavalry.
Water levels are unpredictable, however, the spring and fall seasons generally afford the best canoeing conditions. Canoeists should stay alert to rapidly changing water conditions and heed all warning signs. The river area can be extremely dangerous, with GARLAND CR. life-threatening stream flows and underflow currents. Stay out of restricted areas and always your life jacket. 3 mi. from dam

Sixteen miles of Hike and Bike Trails at Possum Kingdom Lake crisscross the lake’s central peninsula and along the Brazos River below Morris Sheppard Dam, connecting the Brazos River Authority’s nearby public areas, which feature camping and other amenities as well as access to the lake. The natural-surface trails are 5-feet wide with an overhead clearance of about 10 feet to aid easy passage. The paths are accessible to hikers of a wide range of abilities. Most average no more than a gentle 5- to 12-degree slope. Other sections, such as the portion that rises high above the lake to Johnson Peak, have more challenging slopes of up to 20 degrees. Twelve trailheads are located at intervals to allow hikers the opportunity to travel as much or as little of the trail system as they please. The trails also feature parking, restrooms, water fountains, camping, swimming areas, maps, signs and numerous rest areas with cedar benches. Many of these stopping points feature signs with information about the area’s history, geology and animals. One of the most beautiful of such spots is the rest area atop Johnson Peak where one can get a 360-degree view of the surrounding lake and hills, as well as geological features such as the landmark Hell’s Gate.
Bird watchers and other wildlife lovers will also nd plenty to experience on the trails as well, including a possible glimpse of the elusive golden-cheeked warbler, the only migratory bird that nests solely in Texas. Possum Kingdom is on the northern end of the endangered bird’s habitat. In 2012, the Texas Trails Network honored the PK system with the Great Texas Trail Head Award, which recognizes innovative trail planning and design. The trails have also been featured in statewide publications. Over the last few years competitive
runners have discovered the trails and a number of events have been held along their winding routes. In September, the trails were an essential part of the Trifecta Triathlon’s fourth competition at Possum Kingdom Lake. Also, this past April Endurance Buzz Adventure again hosted the Possum Kingdom Trail Run 52-mile run on the trails. The trail system was made possible by the
BRA through grants from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The BRA’s trails and public areas at Possum Kingdom are open yearround. However, should the trails close due to inclement weather, the information will be posted online at brazos.org, where a map of the trail system can be found. For more information, call the BRA public information of ce at 888-9226272.

Graford is the small town on State Highway 254 one passes through on the way to Possum Kingdom Lake. The quiet little community often goes unnoticed as travelers set their sights on PK’s many opportunities for vacation fun, but there is more to Graford than meets the eye. Being situated at the halfway point between Graham and Weatherford, Graford got its name from the two bigger towns. In 1854, George R. Bevers surveyed a homestead at Flat Rock Crossing on Big Keechi Creek, three miles east of what was to become the town site and, in 1855, he built a home that became a stopping place for travelers between Fort
Belknap and Weatherford. An historical marker along Highway 254, east of Graford, marks the location. A store established by Ansell Russell and Willis Mills on the Fort WorthFort Belknap Road was the community’s first business. Texas Rangers who secured the release of white captive Cynthia Ann Parker, mother of Comanche chief Quannah Parker, met at the store to begin their quest. In 1894, William S. Green became Graford’s first postmaster and by 1920 the community had a population of 313. By 1940, it had incorporat-

ed and had a population of 804 and a bank had been established. The Weatherford, Mineral Wells and Northwestern Railroad completed 25 miles from Weatherford to Mineral Wells in 1891. The line was bought by the Texas and Pacific Railway Company in 1902 and extended 18 miles from Mineral Wells to Graford in 1908. In 1931, the line was classified as a Class II railroad by the Railroad Commission and owned three locomotives and
three cars. That year the line earned $5,783 in passenger revenue and $854,122 in freight revenue. Twelve miles of track between Salesville and Graford were abandoned in 1936, as were eight miles between Mineral Wells and Salesville in 1941. In 1980, Graford’s population was reported as 495, and in 1990 it was 561. Graford is 12 miles east of Possum Kingdom Lake. Today the town has 571 inhabitants.

The History of
Possum Kingdom Lake For the third year in a row, Possum Kingdom Lake will host the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition. The local event, scheduled for June 4, 2016, is the kickoff location — and the only U.S. stop — for the international tour that leads up to the Cliff Diving World Series in October in the UAE.
In addition to the annual cliff diving event, Possum Kingdom Lake has a lot to offer. The lake, created with the damming of the Brazos River, is a popular hotspot for vacationers and locals who want to spend a day or week at the beach for a retreat from the hot Texas sun.

The lake, however, is more than a place to soak in the sun. Its history and the land surrounding it dates back many years. It is said that Spanish explorers traveled through the area, but they were not rst. Long ago, Indians of many tribes settled along the banks of the Brazos River, and many artifacts can still be found. Early cattlemen raised their herds and fought Indians and rustlers. Oliver Loving drove his rst cattle herd to Louisiana from Loving Valley, just below Morris Sheppard Dam. The dam, named for Sen. John Morris Sheppard, was the rst erected by the Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation District, later to become the Brazos River Authority. The dam, a heavily buttressed concrete structure with adjoining earth embankment, was built at a cost of $8.5 million. It is 2,747 feet long and has a maximum height of 189 feet; the spillway is 987 feet above mean sea level. The dam was ordered to be decommissioned in 2010. The lake and reservoir are owned and operated by the BRA. At rst, PK Lake was known primarily to area residents as a good place to go shing or swimming on the weekends and holidays. As word of its attributes has spread far and wide, the lake now draws visitors from across the state and the nation.
Possum Kingdom Lake is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Texas and has been featured in Texas Highways and Texas Parks and Wildlife magazines numerous times. Of cially called Possum Kingdom Reservoir, the lake is on the Brazos River in Palo Pinto, Stephens, Jack and Young counties. It has a capacity of 724,700 acre-feet, a surface area of 19,800 acres and a shoreline of 310 miles. Morris Sheppard Dam impounds 1.5 million acre-feet of water annually for municipal, industrial, mining, irrigation, oodcontrol, recreational and power-generation uses. Area hills and valleys, post oaks and cedars make a paradise for possums and many other types of wildlife around the lake. The dam turned the once wild river into one of the premier recreational locations in the state, offering water sport opportunities, as well as shing and camping set amid the hills of one of the more pristine areas in the United States. With its popularity, businesses around the area cater to the needs of visitors. Resorts, from more rustic camps to comfortable hotels, are available. Restaurants offering a full variety of favorites on both the east and west sides of the lake satisfy even the most nicky palate. For water enthusiasts, there are marinas, boat launches — both public
and private — scuba diving opportunities, water skiing, shing, swimming and just relaxing by the water. Several boat rental businesses are located around the lake, offering personal water crafts, ski boats and party boats. Docks abound, as do services both on and off the water. The estimated annual visitors number is close to 1 million, and facilities to accommodate these visitors have grown dramatically over the last several
years. However, the ongoing drought sparked the 2011 PK wild res, resulting in a loss of hundreds of thousands of acres of greenery and wildlife. More than 160 homes were destroyed in the re, causing locals to relocate until the res subsided. Over the past four years, the twisted black trunks of the trees have steadily been surrounded by green grass and returning wildlife. Through the ames of the past, PK Lake has made its way back into the

hustle and bustle of business and warmly greets visitors with its open and green camping grounds. Camping is abundant at PK, with several publicuse camping areas on the water, and Sandy Beach offers an area for that weekend trip to build sand castles, swim or just relax and enjoy the sun and water. On the west side, Possum Kingdom State Park adjoins the Cedar Creek area of the lake, offering
camping, boat rentals and a site far removed from the hustle and bustle of the modern age. Texas Parks and Wildlife has served the shing enthusiasts, stocking the lake annually with striper, native bass and largemouth Florida bass. Area shing guides, some lifelong residents of the lake, are available for a half-day or full-day’s shing.

Old Jail Museum Complex In Making its home in a former jail, the Old Jail Museum Complex in Palo Pinto relates the county’s colorful history, from a dangerous frontier to present day. The county jail, built in 1882, became a relic of history in 1941 when the new courthouse — which contained a third- oor jail — was completed on the Palo Pinto square. It remained in service until the late 20th century when the current sheriff’s of ce and jail was built and now serves as the cornerstone of the grounds of the museum complex, which also includes a dog trot log cabin built in the early 1900s and another, 2016-2017 • 36 • PK vacation Guide
Palo Pinto built around 1897, from the Joe Johnson Ranch, the rebuilt Black Springs Fort and more. A grain bin, corn crib, Dodson Prairie thresher and other artifacts also occupy the grounds. At the museum, guests can see period clothing, shoes, saddles, branding irons, old photos, early cameras, glassware, old washing machines and household items, old rearms and war uniforms grouped in such categories as attire, school life, travel items, world of rodeo and textiles. The museum is maintained by dedicated volunteers of the Palo Pinto
speakers, but live music, tours of the museum grounds, living history demonstrations, including doll making, sewing, quilting, spinning, whittling and more, and most recently an antique car show that draws dozens of restored autos. At Christmas, the association holds its Frontier Christmas, with hay rides, treats, music, storytelling and decorations as they were in the 1800s. The Frontier Christmas is held the second Thursday in December, and this year’s event will be the 10th annual Frontier Christmas. In the last year or two, the complex has hosted historical exhibits produced by Humanities Texas, the state af liate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. These programs feature insights to both Texas and U.S. history and the people who left their mark. Additionally, research material is available at the
museum. Just a block away, historic buildings line the square around the courthouse and the county has taken steps to maintain the integrity of the county seat’s architecture. Within the courthouse are records that go back to the very beginnings of the county, one of the few counties in Texas that still retains the original documents, from the rst grand jury and commissioners court meeting to the present day. All in all, Palo Pinto, once named Golconda, is a place where one can almost feel the presence of early pioneers, including such notables as Charlie Goodnight, Oliver Loving, C.C. Slaughter and so many more. The Old Jail Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday beginning the rst Thursday in March and
continuing through about the second Saturday in December. Tours can be scheduled by calling Ann Reagan, 940-659-2555. Some of this year’s special exhibits at the Old Jail Museum include: • “Quanah & Cynthia Ann Parker: A Pictorial Exhibit of Their Story” — through June 30 2016 Cynthia Ann and Quanah Parker are featured in more than 40 rarely seen photos in the Lakes Trail Program traveling exhibit that recognizes the importance of their life stories and is initiating an effort to tell both youths and adults about the mother and son. In 1836, a Comanche raiding party took Cynthia Ann from her family and over the following years, she became wife to a Comanche chief and mother to children, including Quanah. After Cynthia Ann was taken back by Texas
Rangers, Quanah became one of the most important Comanche leaders both in war and peace. • “Miguel Covarrubias: Caricaturista” — Sept. 1 Oct. 7, 2016 “Miguel Covarrubias: Caricaturista” is an exhibit created in cooperation with the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin and Humanities Texas, the state af liate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. According to the Old Jail Museum’s website, Miguel Covarrubias (1904–1957) was one of the foremost Mexican artists of the 20th century. His caricatures provide a unique window into the cultural and political milieu of the 1920s and 1930s. His intellectual interests inspired him to explore cultures as varied as the hues of his art. He became an expert in indigenous Mexican art and culture and an important gure in
the preservation of ancient sites and artifacts. • “Mexico: Splendors of Thirty Centuries and Destination Mexico” — Nov. 1 - 30, 2016 This exhibit is organized by the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University, the Clements Center for Southwest Study, and Humanities Texas, the state af liate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and it illuminates eight decades of tourist travel to Mexico, from the rst rail connections in the mid1880s to the advent of the jet age in the late 1950s. “Mexico: Splendors of Thirty Centuries” presents 3,000 years of Mexican culture and history through photographs of stone sculptures from prehistoric times, liturgical artifacts from Colonial days, 19thcentury portraits and landscapes, and works on canvas and paper by twentiethcentury muralists.
