HEALTHY LIVING

IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP

FOR OUR CHILDREN Parents, do you know if your child is getting enough sleep? School is right around the corner and we need to get our kids back on a sleep schedule. Your average elementary- and middle-schooler has to wake up around 6:30 to catch a bus, spends a full day in school, participates in at least one afterschool activity, gets home around five and has homework to do before bed. The daily demands on teens are heightened by an even longer list of activities, increased stress and fluctuating hormone levels to boot. Which is why sleep is so important for school-age kids and teens. Sleep gives cells a chance to regenerate, muscles to repair themselves, and the brain a chance to recalibrate hormone levels that affect mood, appetite and ability to focus.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH? On average, teens need about 10 hours of sleep a night, while school-age kids need 10 to 12 hours a night. The sad truth is that very few of our kids are meeting these numbers. As parents, we have an enormous opportunity and responsibility to educate our kids about sleep.

LIMIT ACCESS TO THE JUICE. Not the juice that comes in liquid form — we’re talking about electricity! That means TVs, computers, video games and cell phones. The problem with all these ubiquitous devices is that they are stimulating, and using them too close to bedtime disrupts the sleep cycle, making it harder to fall asleep and eating up precious sleep time.

KEEP IT REGULAR. Although it may be tempting to let your

TEACH KIDS TO PLAN FOR A REASONABLE BEDTIME. Sit down

REMEMBER THAT BEDTIME STARTS WITH DINNER. Set the stage for a drama-free bedtime by having dinner at roughly the same time each night, leaving enough wiggle room in the timing to allow for some diversions from routine.

with your kids and explain to them how many hours of sleep they need each night based on their age. Then help them determine what time they ought to be going to bed according to what time they need to wake up each morning. For example, if a third-grader needs to be up at 6:30 and requires 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night, he should be going to bed no later than 8:30. Explain how many hours he has after school to get his homework done, and assist him in creating a rough schedule for his evening hours that allows enough room for schoolwork, activities, dinner, winding down and bedtime. Even if he doesn’t hit all the guidelines you establish every night, he will be learning how to organize his evenings so that he has enough time to sleep — a skill that will serve him well throughout his life.

DON’T RELY ON NAPS. Although a midafternoon slumber worked wonders when your kids were toddlers, a nap now is likely to interrupt nighttime sleep.

10

kids push their bedtimes during the week and then sleep in on the weekends, if your kids have sleep problems, you aren’t necessarily doing them any favors. Instead, encourage your child to go to bed and get up at roughly the same time every day — even on Saturdays and Sundays.

TAKE TIME TO WIND DOWN. Just like adults, kids need some time to unwind mentally and physically before bed. Help your children establish a brief, relaxing routine that they do every night — a few minutes of simple stretching, listening to mellow music, taking a bath, or drinking a glass of warm milk or cup of herbal tea all fit the bill. CREATE A SLEEP-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT. Too much light and a hot or cold room make it difficult to sleep. Hang light-blocking curtains, and make sure that the temperature is seasonally appropriate in your kids’ rooms. http://www.sleepfoundation.org

School Lunch Ideas

School is starting back up and our schedules are getting jammed packed. The first couple weeks getting back in the “school” routine can be difficult. Packing lunches in advances saves my week. It’s one of the best things I do for myself. I knock out 3-4 days of lunches on Sunday night and it gives us so much extra time in morning. This means a few minutes out of my crazy hectic days that I can take for myself, have another cup of coffee, or get a little bit ahead on something else. Back to school time is the perfect opportunity to start packing a healthier lunchbox. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is important for everyone, but children in particular need to receive all of the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A healthy diet and regular physical activity can stabilize energy, sharpen the mind and improve mood - allowing children to maximize their potential both inside and outside of school. The good news - it doesn’t have to be difficult either. Here are some examples of healthier fun lunches your children will actually want to eat.

DIY “lunchables”, cucumber slices, grapes, yogurt

Chicken slider, salad with ranch, trail mix, banana

Turkey sandwich kabobs, carrots & ranch, apricot, pudding

DIY Lunchables are a favorite in our home, way better quality and get alot more for your money

Chicken salad can make sandwhiches for a couple lunches. Small to go containers for ranch are a must

This is one of my kids favorite lunches. The kabobs are fun and little love you notes are always fun to find!

Mini bagel with cream cheese, snap peas, strawberries, fruit leather, string cheese

Tortilla pinwheels, sliced avocado, blueberries, banana chips

This lunch is a good substitute for PB&J when you want they want something sweet.

Keep avocado from browning by slicing in the shell and squeezing a small amount of lemon juice, then cover tightly with plastic wrap

Hot Lunch Thermos We love these thermos in our house!! Use them for soup, pasta, rice and left overs. Kids enjoy having something hot for lunch August | The Bingo Nugget |

SENIOR LIVING

IMMUNIZATION

AWARENESS MONTH National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is an annual observance held in August to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. Every year, thousands of adults in America suffer serious health problems from diseases they could be vaccinated against like shingles, whooping cough, hepatitis A and B, flu, and pneumococcal disease. Some even die. In the U.S., currently 1 million people get shingles every year, and about one out of every three people will get shingles in their lifetime. What is shingles? Shingles, also known as zoster or herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you’ve had chickenpox, you are at risk of getting shingles. • One out of every three people 60 years old or older will get shingles. • One out of six people older than 60 years who get shingles will have severe pain. The pain can last for months or even years. • The most common complication of shingles is severe pain where the shingles rash was. This pain can be debilitating. There is no treatment or cure from this pain. As people get older, they are more likely to develop longterm pain as a complication of shingles and the pain is likely to be more severe. • Shingles may also lead to serious complications involving the eye. Very rarely, shingles can also lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness, brain inflammation (encephalitis), or death.

• Persons who have already had shingles or who have a chronic medical condition can receive the shingles vaccine. • In a clinical trial involving thousands of adults 60 years old or older, the vaccine reduced the risk of shingles by about half. Even if the shingles vaccine doesn’t prevent you from getting shingles, it can still reduce the chance of having long-term pain. Talk with your healthcare professional for more information and to find out if the shingles vaccine is right for you.

The shingles vaccine is a safe way to protect your health. • Vaccines are tested and monitored. The shingles vaccine went through years of testing before being licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and FDA continue to monitor vaccines after they are licensed. • Vaccine side effects are usually mild and temporary. In most cases, shingles vaccine causes no serious side effects. Some people experience mild reactions that last up to a few days, such as headache or redness, soreness, swelling, or itching where the shot was given.

Protect Yourself Against Shingles Adults 60 years old or older should talk to their healthcare professional about getting a one-time dose of the shingles vaccine. • The shingles vaccine can reduce your risk of shingles and the long- term pain it can cause.

22

| The Bingo Nugget | August

• Vaccines are safe for most people. The shingles vaccine is safe for you unless you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or have allergies to certain components of the vaccine. ABSOLUTE BEAUTY BY CELESTE

NEW

BEAUTY TECHNIQUE B

BIRCHBOX

It has been a few months since my best friend bought me a year subscription to BIRCHBOX and I have yet to share this monthly treasure box with you, so here it goes! BIRCHBOX is a personalized beauty box that contains five product samples monthly. Products range from hair care to skin care to makeup. Each cute vibrant box includes instructions and information on each sample product and its full size product price which can be purchased from their website www.birchbox.com. This month’s box contained one of my favorite items by far. The product is called GIMME BROW by benefit, it is a tinted brow gel that contains microfibers that adhere to skin and hairs making your eyebrows appear instantly fuller! This product was so simple to use and really did transform my eyebrows within seconds. Using the tapered brush that is included, gently comb the brow in the direction of growth to blend and build the volume. That’s it! Really that’s all you have to do, once you have reached your desired darkness and the product is dry (which only takes about 30 seconds) you can shape your eyebrows using an eyebrow brush. Not only does this product create a fuller looking eyebrow but it is water resistant, smudge proof, long lasting and buildable from the lightest to the darkest color desired. This product can be purchased through the BIRCHBOX website or from Ulta or Sephora retail stores for $24; a big thumbs up for this product, I hope you love it as much as I do! Also don’t forget to sign up for a BIRCHBOX subscription for just $10 a month or $110 yearly, it makes a wonderful gift and I have not yet been disappointed! * I used the MARCELLE BB Cream Golden Glow underneath my foundation and the LAURA CELLER New York Gilded Honey eye shadow that came with this month’s BIRCHBOX to complete my look.

THINGS TO DO

Lady Bird Lake With summer now winding down, what better activity than hitting the mellow waters of Lady Bird Lake, where you can enjoy kayaking for two, paddle boarding, skyline views, and very historic land marks across the southern side of Austin, Texas. While the Colorado River is the main stretch of water that runs through southwest Austin, a space has been sectioned off and named the Lady Bird Lake, or Town Lake to some of you. You can enter the water through many kayak renting companies, or if you have your own gear, you can park and enter off any ramp. One company that I find to be reputable is

32

| The Bingo Nugget | August

Live Love Paddle. This renting company, and most, charge an hourly fee and have kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards. Live Love Paddle stands out because they give you a fifteen minute window when checking in and out of the water. Have a fish eye view year round on days like New Years Eve, July 4th, or nightly for the fastest bats in town. Other events include Austin City Limits and the yearly kite festival. Any day without lightening is a good day to paddle out, just be sure to give yourself enough time to take in this beautiful city, from bridge to bridge.

Pole-Vaulting for the U.S. Olympic Team in Rio The former Texas State pole vaulter secured the final Olympic berth after clearing 5.60 meters on his first attempt. Cunningham, who was also a Smithson Valley Ranger standout, was surprised that his height would earn him a trip to the Olympics. From humble beginnings in junior high to participating in the 2012 Olympic Trials, Logan Cunningham has done everything a pole vaulter dreams of doing. “I started vaulting in 7th grade when I decided I wanted to join track and field, After I saw pole vaulting, I knew that was what I wanted to do.” In high school at Smithson Valley, Cunningham was chosen as the Field Athlete of the Year in 2008. In 2012 he was named a First-Team AllAmerican and set the school’s indoor record. Soon after, he was named the Southland Conference (SLC) Men’s Athlete of the Week in February after shattering records with his performance in the SLC Championships. After participating in track and field at Texas State, Cunningham was invited to participate in the Olympic Trials. http://news4sanantonio.com
