and son were going to be in the blind with him! A beautiful afternoon, September, a trophy exotic ranch near Bandera, right after a cold front got the animals moving around. Garland, Jayne, and John, along with Armen Gamalyan (PWF Guide) and a ranch guide slide into the blind and wait. Animals start going through the pasture, but not an animal we would like. After a few hours, at sundown, we decide to try again in the morning. Before dawn everyone is in the blind and ready. About an hour after sunrise, here came the first animal. A quick check with the binoculars, and yes it’s him!!! A trophy Dall, slowly working into range, Garland has a clean shot, the safety goes off, and after a final check, “go ahead and take him!!!” A single shot, perfectly placed, and Garland has the trophy of a lifetime, Garland was successful in taking a huge trophy Dall, and have his wife and son with him while he did it. For him, this was truly the hunt of a lifetime. I cannot tell you how much this hunt meant to him and his family. Life is Good!!!!!!!
Oil and Gas Extraction Safety Hazards • Vehicle Collisions: Workers and equipment are transported to and from well sites. Roughly 4 of every 10 workers killed on the job in this industry as a result of a highway vehicle incident. • Struck-By/ Caught-In/ Caught-Between: Three of every five on-site fatalities are the result of struck-by/caught - in/caught-between hazards, moving vehicles or equipment, falling equipment, and high pressure lines. • Fires and Explosions: Ignition of flammable vapors, gases and hydrogen sulfide from wells, trucks, tanks, shale shakers, production equipment or surface equipment. Ignition sources can include static, electrical energy sources, open flames, lightning, cigarettes, cutting and welding tools, hot surfaces and frictional heat. • Falls: Accessing platforms and equipment located high above the ground. OSHA requires fall protection to prevent falls from the mast, drilling platform, and other elevated equipment. • Confined Spaces: Entry into petroleum and other storage tanks, mud pits, reserve pits, excavated areas, sand storage containers, around a wellhead. Safety hazards include ignition of flammable vapors or gases, asphyxiation and exposure to hazardous chemicals. Confined spaces contain or the potential to contain a serious atmospheric hazard are permit-required confined spaces, tested prior to entry and continuously monitored. • Ergonomics Hazards: Lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling heavy loads, repetitiveness working body postures. pre-task planning, proper tools, proper placement of materials and worker training. • High Pressure Lines and Equipment: Internal line erosion causes leaks or line bursts causes high-pressure hazards from compressed gases. If connections securing high-pressure lines fail, struck-by hazards might be created. • Electrical and Other Hazardous Energy: Exposure to uncontrolled electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or other sources of hazardous energy if equipment is not designed, installed, and maintained properly. • Machine Hazards: Exposure to rotating wellhead equipment, top drives and Kelly drives, drawworks, pumps, catheads, compressors, hoist blocks, belt wheels, conveyors, if struck, may cause injury. African Kalahari Desert Kgalagadi (pronounced Khalahadi) meaning, “Waterless Place”
20 Shot of Texas Magazine™
he Kalahari Desert region was formed 60 million years ago and covers over 350,000 sq. miles. The park is blanketed by red sand without permanent surface water. Kalahari’s land mass is located in Botswana with sections in Namibia & South Africa…
T
The lower portion of this vast park is known as Transfrontier National Park where terrain consists of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation and dry river beds known for flowing with water only about once a century. However, water does flow underground and provides life for grass and camelthorn trees that grow in the river beds. The national parks set up a series of water cisterns for animal watering holes. CT is a retired airline captain that I recently met; she is delightful, vivacious & spontaneous. Watching her circle the globe at a moment’s notice, I’m amused as I believe her retirement manifest reads, “Pack your bags and get out of town, the next adventure awaits!” Her latest venture was into the Transfrontier National Park in South Africa and was filled with vivid stories and full of excitement. She was privy to a full array of animals roaming free within the park, BlackMane Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards, and Hyenas. Many migratory herds of Giraffes, Blue Wildebeest, Springbok, Eland, and Red Hartebeest wander through these vast lands. On record are more than 200 species of birds that can be found in the park such as Eagles, Buzzards, Vultures, Raptors, and Secretary birds, which can stand over 4FT tall. Will her guide offered options for sleeping accommodations within the park? Sleep in one of six designated lodges throughout the park, or choose to sleep in “tented camps.” Interesting concept as these are
permanent tents with running water and walled protection. Many African travelers know its taboo camping on the open ground possibly waking up to a Lion staring at you or even the deadly Mamba snake getting too cozy or inquisitive. CT had many adventures during her seven nights in the park. As an example, she said the stars were so clear it seemed she could reach out and touch the “Southern Cross” or “Orion” as their brilliance was unblemished. Will was the new Chef Tell preparing an array of delightful African dishes, but his dinners cooked out under the stars gave the true sense of “Out of Africa” extraordinaire! But starry night exploration was limited, CT didn’t venture too far from the tented camp site as the loud roar of Lions appeared way too close. Continued on page 41

Viewing all the animals in their natural habitats was not only exhilarating but at times somewhat frightening…as day breaks each morning grab a quick cup of coffee, a granola bar, and head out to see the kingdom awakening to begin their day. By late morning head back to camp to catch a full breakfast/lunch because animals head for cover retreating from the heat of the day. Beginning in the late afternoon one ventures back out to experience the “sundowner”, animals actively seeking watering holes. One afternoon they observed two young giraffes fighting for
over an hour pushing and shoving with their massive chests along with slamming and twisting their necks about with one another. It was quite evident giraffes need to calculate their moves due to size and deliberate maneuverability. But as time drew closer to sundown CT & Will ventured onward to find other watering locations to photograph and capture memories with an artful eye. Photography is the “Mirror of the Eye”….creating memories of your adventurous trips around the world Bon Voyage & Santé Barbara G

Who still has a photocopier from Xerox? Who still knows where to buy Scotch Tape? And for our female readers, who still buys Kleenex tissues? Brand recognition is defined as the extent to which a consumer can correctly identify a particular product or service just by viewing the product or service’s logo, tag line, packaging or advertising campaign. A Brand can be defined as the combination of a logo, tag lines, symbols, slogans, and maybe go as far as characters or sound bytes used in advertising.

Drunk driver
By Shamus Dartanyon
NLOOV IDPLO\ RI ÎYH So here’s a question. Is it time to ban cars. I think so as this would make perfect sense if you are a leftist idiot. After all it was the weight of the car aimed directly at his victims either by accident or intent that killed or took the life of that person or persons. The headlines of this article are nothing new and we’ve all read them thousand times. However today, and to my knowledge I am unaware of any cars or trucks being blamed for the crime. Now you take the same scenario where a guy walks into the club and slaughters human beings like animals (Orlando Florida). So you have a human being driving a car while drunk and kills people and you have a human being holding a gun who kills people. Are not both car and the gun inanimate objects incapable of doing damage without help? Hmmm?

A Grill for Every Season
By Jeanine Johnson
L
et’s face it, there are plenty of great camping and portable grills out there to choose from. But before you start reading about all the features and BTUs, have you ever stopped to think about where and how you want to use your grill? The best grill in the world might be the worst choice if you haven’t thought about your personal needs. Things such as space, portability, fuel and cooking versatility should all be considered before choosing the perfect outdoor grill. With that in mind, here are some great choices and where/why you might want to choose each!
Camp Chef Big Gas Grill
Coleman NXT 200
Outdoor cooking is all about versatility. You want to be able to grill meat, boil, griddle, fry and even bake pizza on a single stove? Then the Camp Chef Big Gas Grill has got you covered. This grill has 3 powerful 30,000 BTU burners that heat 615 square inches of cooking space. It features matchless ignition, a folding side shelf and removable legs, which make it easy to take the stove y from the patio to the campsite or tailgate party. And as for that versatility part, included with the Big Gas Grill is one of Camp Chef ’s Professional Barbecue Grill Boxes. The grill box is designed with a heat diffusion system that is pre-seasoned. The cast iron grill grates creating an excellent surface for meats, vegetables and other delicious foods. As if that wasn’t enough, purchase the optional pizza oven, and now you are really styling!
This handy little grill is all about quick set-up and portability. The Coleman NXT 200 is lightweight (abut 50 lbs.) and easy to pull around with the pull handle and wheels. Brace the bottom with your foot and pull up and the scissors legs open to the standing position. Veryy handy when you are setting up and taking down frequently. This unit has a 339 square inch grilling surface, an electric starter and has optional grate attachments available. Cooking power comes in at 20,000 BTUs. The unit comes ready to connect to a 16.4-oz. propane cylinder (sold separately), which will provide about an hour of cooking on high. Or, you can purchase a standard propane hose and connect to a larger propane tank. Two convenient side table provide ample work space and a handy grease catching cup underneath helps avoid messes. If you are tailgating or make a quick, weekend camping trip, this easy to set up unit is your perfect selection!
Camp Chef Outdoor Camp Oven Tired of the same old thing? Sometimes, even when you are roughing it, you just want more. Maybe some nice biscuits and gravy for breakfast or a fresh pie for dessert. If your out in the woods, even with a nice propane grill, those things just aren’t possible. Or are they! The Camp Chef Outdoor Camp Oven has the two burners you are used to seeing on most camp stoves, but it also has a full oven, something you aren’t used to seeing! The oven features more than 14,000 total BTU of cooking energy. The unit uses a disposable 1-lb. propane tank, or it can be adapted to use a 20-lb. tank for increased cooking time. The range’s dual burners put out a whopping 5,300 BTU per burner. The oven heats at 3,000 BTU per hour with a maximum temperature of 400°F. Two oven racks allow plenty of room to cook both your main meal and dessert at once. As with other grills, the burners use matchless igniters and the folding lid and carry handles make the unit portable. So enjoy the wilderness and enjoy your favorite baked goods all at the same time!
Patio Bistro Electric Grill Outdoor cooking made easy. Sometimes you don’t want to mess with charcoal or you’d rather not drag out the propane tank. You just want to grill up a few nice steaks or burgers because hey, who doesn’t! The Patio Bistro Electric Grill by Char-Broil is just the ticket. This small, portable grill is great if you have limited space such as a balcony patio, or just don’t want the fuss of setting up a larger grill. All you need is an electric outlet and you are good to go! Even out camping, if you have an RV to supply electricity, this little workhorse is a great choice. It runs on a standard 110 volt outlet and has a 1,750 watt heating element. While you won’t get the very high heat for immediate seering that you would with a propane/gas or charcoal grill, you will get nice, steady, even heat and you can even throw in a few wood chips to produce a more authentic smoked flavor. For limited space, fast and easy setup, no hassle cooking, this great little grill gets our vote!

ough conditions are common when you are out on a hunt. Cold weather, rocky terrain, it can all take its toll on your feet. That’s why Superfeet has created a new line of insoles called the HUNT, part of their new Trophy series. The thermo-regulating merino wool and Aerospring impact foam keeps you warm and comfortable for hours in the cold and ‘Ground Sense’ impact dampening technology makes the hike out and back easier on your feet. The Trophy series is
made up of four insoles, each designed with a different part of the hunting season in mind. From early season, when hunters are ticking off trail miles scouting their routes, to mid-season, when more time is spent huddled in tree stands, the series features technologies specifically for each of these end uses. Unique versions for both men and women for proper fit. Make your favorite hunting boots even better with the right insoles. Happy hunting!
COOL KAYAK

en or Lamborghini of kayaks – I just need something practical, comfortable with the features I want in a fishing kayak. I found all of the above in the Ascend FS10 from Bass Pro Shop. This kayak is relatively
lightweight (57 lbs.) and easy for two to carry with the convenient handles on either end. This is a sit-in kayak, with an ample and comfortable seat that is also removable. With an affordable price of around $550, this kayak is a great value! This unit boasts a large, open cockpit which is great for fishing. There are three rod holders and a dry storage area (small, but enough for keys, a wallet and a cell
e reviewed the Polar Trailer HD 1500 right here at the ranch. A Shot of Texas Ranch is a working ranch with over 40 acres needing constant attention. I must admit, I had questions about how a trailer this size would perform on the ranch, but after rigorous testing, I have to say that the Polar HD 1500 is as tough and durable as it can be! The standard tilt bed is very reliable and makes loading and unloading easy. The oversized tires ensure good traction and no getting stuck in the mud. The load capacity is ¾ of a ton, so this trailer is more than capable of handling anything you can throw at it. The all steel, powder coated frame is built to last and the trailer bed won’t rust or corrode – ever! This product gets a 5 star rating from us!!
phone). There is an ample storage area behind the cockpit, sufficient for a tackle box and bucket to hold your catch. Built in ‘bungee’ cords keep your gear secure. I also found the FS10 to be very stable. I never felt ‘on the edge’ of tipping over at any point. It also tracked very well. It is comfortable, even during prolonged periods of sitting, waiting for that first nibble! The adjustable foot braces make this unit a good fit for both me and my 6’ 2” husband. Overall, an excellent buy, especially at this price point!
Admittedly, I’m kind of a nerd when it comes to laundry appliances. I was one of the first females in appliance repair way back in the mid 1970s, and cut my teeth on washers and dryers. I’m sure it is my history that got me so excited about reviewing the BaseCamp Portable Washing Machine. While this handy little machine is probably not for the full-time RVer, for a few days to a couple of weeks, it’s just about perfect. It is compact enough to take along in any situation where space is limited and only weighs 15 lbs. Whether you are in an RV, a cabin or tent camping with a generator, you can use this machine. Though somewhat manual, this is a reasonable way to get your clothes clean in an outdoors setting. The strong motor agitates and spins the clothes well. The machine is manually filled and gravity drained. A convenient timer manages wash and spin time. The clothes came out very clean. They were not quite a dry as a full size machine would get them, but this is a reasonable trade-off for the size and portability. In addition to the outdoor community, I think this would be a great item to send along with a college student, or for a person starting off in a small apartment. Overall, I really liked this little work horse and, in the right application, I would highly recommend it! A Shot of Texas Magazine™ 35

In February, Redpoint evacuated two Ripcord clients on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro at 13,000 feet - not an unusual altitude for mountain hunters to reach. The climbers were part of the Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb for Valor, an event conducted by mountaineering company Tusker Trail to raise money and awareness for the families of fallen members of US Special Operations Forces. Two of the climbers developed conditions that threatened their lives but did not require hospitalization for treatment. Dr. Avi Patil, a Redpoint wilderness medical expert and Stanford Medicine-afďŹ liated physician who was participating in the climb, describes what happened: “On the second night, one climber indicated that he couldn’t breathe. The situation was clearly High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) – uid in the
lungs. Soon after, another climber displayed serious facial swelling and an allergic reaction that could easily lead to breathing problems. Both situations were immediate and lifethreatening. Both evacuations were necessary; there was no room for hesitation.

These evacuations are perfect examples of Ripcord’s rescue services. Both HAPE and allergic reactions are potentially life-threatening, but, in this case, neither required hospitalization.
