As Canyon’s first credit union, Education Credit Union offers unparalleled customer service and financial services to the community. The institution opened in Canyon in 2002 and has become a favorite among residents, winning 2015 Readers’ Choice awards for credit union, home mortgage company, customer service and local website. “We’re locally owned, by the members, and we exist to support the members. Not only with services, but to be a good pillar in the community, giving back through financial education, our staff volunteering their time, and monetary donations,” said ECU Executive Vice President/COO Claudia Burkett. ECU’s staff and board prides themselves in investing in the community and in 2014 gave away more than $35,000 to 76 schools through the Pocket Change Grant program. The Canyon branch is a full-service financial institution and employees prioritize taking care of members as the top goal each workday. “Our employees are focused on member service and are thankful for our members because without them, we wouldn’t have jobs,” Burkett said. Every staff member completes a training course titled ONE – Opportunities Never End – that equips all employees with the tools to identify the best products and services for each individual member’s needs. ECU’s member support center, locally-based in Amarillo, is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The support center is full service and enables members to open an account, complete a loan and accomplish other tasks remotely. Education Credit Union is Canyon’s only financial institution open past noon on Saturdays. Anyone that lives, works or attends school or church within a 10-mile radius of any branch is eligible for membership.

For several years the beep, beep, beep of a sky-scraping crane, the buzz of a saw and the metal clang of a hammer were drowning out the sounds of University life at West Texas A&M as construction took center stage in projects designed to change the campus landscape. But the beeps, buzzing and clangs are finally gone, replaced once again by a backdrop of birds chirping and tower bells ringing as students mingle amid the beauty of a revitalized WTAMU. The completed projects will surprise those who haven’t ever been to WTAMU or at least visited the campus in the past several years. More than $66 million in new construction, renovations and campus beautification over the past 10-15 years has transformed the WTAMU landscape with everything from new entrance signs and residence halls to a renovated Jack B. Kelley Student Center and a new multi-field athletic facility. Add in the beauty of carefully manicured lawns, colorful flowerbeds and stately trees, and it explains why Newsweek and The Daily Beast rank WTAMU as one of the most beautiful colleges in the United States. A string of construction projects began in the early 2000s, starting with the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex. The building opened in August 2006 as the University’s first new academic building in 30 years. It is home to the School of Music, the Department of Art, Theatre and Dance and the Department of Communication. The building, rich in smart classroom technology, replaces the Old Fine Arts Building, which was eventually torn down and replaced with a much-needed parking lot. The Stanley Schaeffer Agriculture Education Learning Lab opened in 2007 and offers the agriculture education program approximately 10,000 square feet of mechanical laboratory space. More construction soon followed—Buff Hall, Founders Hall, Centennial Hall and the Buffalo Sports Park. The three new residence halls provide space for more than 900 students in state-of-the-art facilities that cater to needs of each resident with offerings from suite-style living to community kitchens and wireless Internet and cable TV access. And when students are looking for some green space, Buffalo Sports Park is the place. The $21.8 million facility spans the campus in a sea of green synthetic athletic fields from east of Jarrett Hall and north to the former site of the University’s Wind Test Center. Amenities range from the David and Myrt Wilder Baseball Field and the Schaeffer Softball Field to soccer, track and field, basketball and tennis courts, jogging trail and much more. The Bain Athletic Center is the final piece to the athletic complex and houses a locker room, shower and laundry facilities, office space and training areas—all things that make it the perfect home for WTAMU’s student-athletes. Renovations mark many recent improvements on campus as well. A newly remodeled Classroom Center brought smart-classroom technology throughout the facility and provided a home for the new Student Success Center. The Virgil Henson Activities Center got a facelift

with a 40-foot rock-climbing wall, indoor walking/jogging track, recreational pool and a 9,000 square foot weight room. Updating at Mary Moody Northen Hall provided new flooring, art and music locker replacements as well as a new addition for the School of Music with a new band/orchestra rehearsal hall, percussion studio and multiple music studios and practice rooms. The old ag/nursing building is now the School of Engineering and Computer Science after a Phase I renovation gutted the building and focused on the first floor with new classroom, lab and office space. The Jack B. Kelley Student Center expanded its space to include meeting rooms, food service areas, a catering kitchen, a student lounge and a multi-purpose room that now serves as the most popular venue on campus for meetings, banquets, receptions and more. Beautification projects also have changed the look of the WTAMU campus. One of the biggest projects is the addition of the Vaughan Pedestrian Mall, which replaced through streets north of Old Main. It is home to the Hayward Spirit Tower as well as a buffalo marble sculpture and water feature. The completion of the west entrance into campus put a finishing touch to the pedestrian mall area with a landscaped divider leading into campus toward the mall and the creation a new home for the WTAMU’s Eternal Flame in a roundabout at the intersection of University and Victory. New landscaped signs also welcome visitors to campus at several entrances. The construction, renovation and beautification projects not only enhance the campus landscape, but the new and improved facilities also strengthen the University’s efforts in providing the best in educational opportunities for WTAMU students. State-of-the-art facilities, enhanced technology, student-centered learning environments and community-friendly outdoor spaces set the stage for a growing student population for years to come.

The Canyon Chamber of Commerce’s Fourth of July Celebration is America at her finest Gold Award winning self. The chamber earned this Readers’ Choice award for sponsoring the event that draws some 40,000 people annually and earns money for causes near and dear to the city heart. “It’s more of a community award. It’s not just us,” said Roger Remlinger, executive director of the Chamber. The annual event harnesses the volunteer spirit of 40-plus organizations and a hard working Chamber staff that begins preparation each October. “The outpouring of volunteerism is amazing,” Remlinger said. “There is no better staff than at the Chamber. They are irreplaceable, priceless.” The day begins with the Canyon Lions Club Pancake Breakfast and ends with big name talent like this year’s appearance of the Gin Blossoms and a powerful fireworks display at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. Sandwiched between are a 100-plus float and bicycle parade, Fair on the Square with 100 vendors, a Patriotic Music Celebration and more in the historic downtown. “We want to be the premier spot for Fourth of July in the state of Texas,” Remlinger said.

Open w-i-i-i-d-e. Because of those wide open mouths, Dr. Philip Corbin earned the Gold Award for Best Orthodontist this year. “I appreciate all the votes and the support from the families from the surrounding area and Canyon,” said Dr. Corbin. He has treated Canyon children and adults since 1985 after beginning his career as an orthodontist in 1978. “I’m just about treating grandkids now,” he said. Dr. Corbin explained he takes a conservative, individualized approach with each patient, noting only 10 to 12 percent of children need to start braces before getting their permanent teeth at about age 12. He and his staff have a combined 100-years experience creating beautiful and healthy smiles for children and adults. “My practice is kept small with a homey environment,” Dr. Corbin said. He attended Amarillo College, West Texas A & M University and the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston where he received a master’s degree in biomedical science and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He also completed a two year residency in orthodontics at the University of Texas Dental Branch. Dr. Corbin has received numerous orthodontic awards for his clinical experience and served as a visiting professor at the University of Texas Dental Branch, lectures orthodontic residents at Baylor College of Dentistry and the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. In 2014, Dr. Corbin was honored by members of the Angle Society of Orthodontists for presenting the best case study. “I look forward to many more years of teaching and practicing clinical orthodontics,” he said.

Earning the top award in the nursery and garden center category is Canyon’s Edge Plants, the brain child business owned by Neal Hinders. Specializing in Texas Panhandle native plants, xeric plants and other perennials well adapted to the High Plains, Canyon’s Edge is the go-to source for local and adapted perennial nursery stock and landscaping supplies delivered with a dose of accurate advice and moral support. Canyon’s Edge Plants is located in downtown Canyon and has clocked a dozen years serving the city and region. “It just means a lot to have people appreciate the work that we’ve done establishing the new business, the new garden center,” said owner Neal Hinders. Canyon’s Edge opened 17 years ago and operated from greenhouses behind his home. Now the business is in downtown Canyon where customers can drop by to browse and examine the labeled demonstration beds in colorful bloom or winter slumber. Hinders offers Plant Select R plants that were developed through a cooperative venture between Denver Botanical Gardens and Colorado State University. “They choose which plants have done best and promote those in Colorado, the mountains and the plains,” Hinders said. “So they have gone through an initial evaluation. We have to make sure they are adapted to our climate.” He noted The Mile High City is more similar to the High Plains with its cool, dry climate than to Austin and its warmer, wetter climate. In the garden center, Hinders stocks Soil Mender products from Tulia. He especially likes the cotton burr blend for enriching local soils. He also carries the rose and bedding mix, garden soil builder, lawn builder, composted manure and raised bed mix. In keeping with Hinders’ commitment to water conservation, he sells buffalo and blue grama grass seeds. “To me that is one of the biggest water saving things we can do is change out our cool season grasses with one of our native prairie grasses,” he said. Educating people about water-wise and climate adapted plants is part of his mission and Hinders attributes that to the Gold Award success of Canyon’s Edge. “I think a lot of it is maybe having plants that are a little more hearty for our area, that are adapted that do well with less water and work well in our climate,” he said.

Mmm. Good. That’s what the people of Canyon think. Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner, open more than a dozen years, earned the Gold Award this year in two categories, Best Full Service Restaurant and Best Steak. Owner Danny Byrd praised the city that honored his culinary efforts. “Thank you to Canyon,” he said. “We couldn’t be in a better spot – the community, the friendships, the people, the university, the school district. It’s just a perfect little town.” In fact, when discussing his business awards, Byrd further shared honors with the city of Canyon and the network of relationships that make them possible. “There seems to be a lot of camaraderie,” he said. The sit down restaurant employs hostesses, a welltrained wait staff and professional cooks to create a quality dining experience. Byrd praised the front line servers who receive five days of training, and he praised the applicants from local high schools and West Texas A&M University for their brains and work ethic. “They are not stupid. If they do their job well, they can make $20 to $25 dollars an hour,” he said. As the top vote getter for Best Steak, Byrd said the diner employs the “Keep it Simple” principle. “We don’t do anything special. We try to buy the best beef we can buy, then cut and trim the steaks. We lightly season them,” he said. “I’ve got some guys who’ve worked for me 15 years and are really good at cooking.” Operating a full-service kitchen requires a great deal of juggling. “I’ve got some real professional cooks in my kitchen,” Byrd said.

Family owned, spiced, diced and authentic, food at Sayakomarn’s Restaurant is Canyon’s top choice for Asian cuisine. The restaurant has been open 8 1/2 years with a few months of that time in its new 16th Street location. “My mom, she just wanted to open a restaurant and bring her recipes to the table, said owner Cindy Sayakmarn. “I’m a finance major, so I thought I’d work at a bank or in accounting. My brother worked at the Post Office. We just did what Mama wanted. The family, including her brother and uncle, tinkers with recipes and menu offerings reflecting their travels and patrons’ suggestions. Sayakmarn’s husband is the head cook and every one in the kitchen is related. “At a lot of places they Americanize a lot of entrees. They think, ‘People don’t like what we have.’ Instead we say, ‘Let’s not judge. Let’s see if they like what we like, and it’s worked, she said. “We know what our family and friends like, and we hope the Canyon and the surrounding area will like it, too. Sayakomarn’s Restaurant serves several signature dishes including the lettuce wrap made of ground chicken, chestnuts, white and green onions, carrots and peanuts wrapped in lettuce leaves. “It is on the healthier side, and it is really popular since we put it on the menu, Sayakmarn said. As the years have gone by, and the patrons have come to know Cindy and her staff, they’ve made suggestions that are now on the menu. The Mark Special, the Justin Special and Lance Special were all inspired by diners with a bright idea

Customer-focused service, experience and value packed policies combine to earn Kenny Dean State Farm the Gold Award for Best Insurance Agency. “We’re very, very humbled that we’ve been able to win that award,” Dean said. “We are humbled to serve the people of Canyon and they’ve recognized our efforts.” This is the third time his 14-year old agency has won the award. Prior to agency ownership, Dean worked for State Farm for 16 years. The company offers life, health, auto, home and property insurance and financial services. “Our focus is on the customer. Period,” he said. “Our motto is to ‘Make a Difference in Somebody’s Life.’” To embody that motto, Dean said he and his staff prize clear communication and listening with the heart. “Some days we listen to people’s stories about losing their spouses or their dog ran away,” Dean said. “It does matter. Anybody can try to sell you stuff, but can somebody really listen to what you’re saying?” In addition to service and experience, he believes he and his staff should be great teachers. “Our job is to show people and teach them the benefits of what is in their policies. We show them the options and they make the decisions,” he said. “Our products are value packed.” People may conduct business online, by telephone or in person, Dean said. “We all have various levels of attention we need or help we need based on our situation. We work with people in the way they prefer,” he said.

It wasn’t long after J. Pat Hickman and investors purchased First State Bank in Happy, Texas and formed Happy Bancshares, Inc. in 1990 that he planned a grand expansion to Canyon, his hometown. Canyon residents welcomed Happy State Bank with open arms during the May 1, 1990 grand opening and have continued to embrace the friendly, communityminded bank throughout the past 25 years, consistently naming it the Readers’ Choice for best bank. “We are very relational. It isn’t really as much about banking services as it is about relationships with people and helping them meet their goals and dreams, said Dave Hutson, President – Canyon. “It is rewarding to help people buy that first house and open that business. It isn’t just a transaction. It’s sharing life. “Participating in community-wide events, enabling employees to volunteer their time, and making financial contributions to various organizations in Canyon is a top priority for the bank, stated Cari Roach, Marketing Director. “It’s more than just providing banking services. We’re a community partner in all aspects. Our folks at the Canyon branch are involved in their schools and churches. They volunteer for the Chamber, the school district, Save Tex Randall and WTAMU to name a few. With almost every aspect of Canyon, we’ve got a fingerprint on it, Roach said. Happy State Bank celebrated the Canyon branch’s 25th anniversary on May 1 with a community wide cookout. Happy State Bank operates under the motto of “Work hard, have fun, make money, while providing outstanding customer service and honoring the Golden Rule, at 34 branches in 22 communities throughout Texas.

The Canyon branch of Amarillo National Bank opened its doors in early April and just a few short months later has earned the Gold Award for Best New Business. “We are honored that Canyon voted us Best New Business,” said ANB Executive Vice President William Ware. “We are proud of the Canyon community. We know it is a tight community that really values local business, and we want to show Canyon we are here for the long haul.” The bank, which is more than 120-years old, opened the Canyon location after a year of remodeling and construction. Ware attributes the Gold Award, bestowed annually by voters in the Readers’ Choice contest, to community involvement that began on the first day of operations and quality customer service. “We showed our service to the current and new customers,” Ware said. “Canyon has wanted us to come for years. We already had a lot of customers
there, and they were glad we opened up.” Prior to opening in April, Ware, who is a fifth generation bank owner, said ANB gave money to the city of Canyon to aid with park beautification and other enhancements as part of the downtown redevelopment effort. “We are proud to be part of the Canyon economy, which we feel is vibrant, strong and growing. It’s exciting to bring more jobs to Canyon, and we hope that shows other businesses that Canyon is a great place to do business,” he said. Fifteen people work in the new branch, which is managed by Canyon resident Ross Macon. “We’ve got a great group of employees, the majority of whom live in Canyon. They grew up there. They have families there. They are a perfect fit for our new branch,” he said. In addition to checking and savings, services include mortgage loans, Circle A Title and personal trust services.

Kitchen, bed and bath. Weathered Elements has them covered. This Gold Award winning shop on the Canyon Square has earned its place through customer service and attention to the details of good living. “We certainly appreciate all the customers who have come into the store and continue to shop with the store. We hope to make their experience a pleasure, not a burden,” said Dee Ann Wilson, who owns Weathered Elements. The shop is easily accessed from on street parking in the downtown area. “A lot of the customers come into the store because it makes them feel good,” Wilson said. “It’s kind of like their happy place.” To create that happy place environment, Wilson stocks a mix of new and vintage items. “People like the old and new mix,” she said. She carries durable bedding by Pine Cone Hill – duvets, coverlets, sheets, bedspreads, bedskirts, shams and throws. As a bonus almost every piece including the velvet and linen items are machine washable. For the bath are soaps, bath salts, lotions and creams from Niven Morgan, Barr-Co and K-Hall, all made in the U.S. For the kitchen, shoppers may select from an array of cookbooks and jellies, oils and vinegars by Stonewall Kitchen. Or they may choose jellies and grilling sauces from New Canaan Farms, based in Dripping Springs. For cooking and dining, table linens are from Hen House and fine Portugese pottery is by Casafina. Weathered Elements also reaches out to community kiddos with Kic Kee Pants 95 percent bamboo clothing from 0 to 18 months, and Jelly Cats plush toys and matching books. As an element of service, bridal and baby registries are available with gift wrapping and delivery available in Canyon. “We hope that our customer service reaches out to everyone,” Wilson said. “If we can help in anyway, it’s our pleasure to do so.”

Earning Gold Awards in three categories is based on quality products and top-notch service delivered by some 155 committed team members. “Service. That’s it,” said John Anderson, store director at United Supermarket. “It’s the people. It’s not me. It’s having people in place that can do that.” United Supermarkets takes pride in fresh produce and fresh meat, which is sourced locally as much as possible. “We feel like people can find value in our products,” he said. “Especially in meat and produce. They are what United Supermarkets hangs its hat on.” Butchers are behind the counter daily to custom cut a piece of meat or answer a customer question about beef, pork, chicken, fish or seafood. Mike Ball, meat market leader, ensures standards for freshness and availability are met every day. The produce department, which is led by Aaron Clark, starts with buyers who walk the fields in search of fresh fruits and vegetables and conduct business with farmers who adhere to similar values in quality and freshness as United Supermarkets.
Buying produce from nearby farmers is of prime importance. He noted pecans, for example, come from Chillicothe. “Most produce was in the fields three to five days before it hits the shelf to preserve taste and nutrition,” Anderson said. In the Fresh Cut department, he explained, melons, blueberry cups, cubed pineapple and yogurt parfait cups are sliced, diced and packaged daily. In the award winning deli department, headed by David Yeats, team members again put together the winning combination of on-time delivery, attractive, full and fresh party trays and sandwiches made to order for a single meal or office party. “Our team members may even know a customer’s order without being told. More importantly, they know guests by name,” Anderson said. The United Supermarkets slogan “where service and savings matter” is carried through to the pharmacy led by Sheri Hildinger as pharmacist-in-charge. “You could get the same pharmacy needs elsewhere,” Anderson said. “But they know you by name. They can counsel you and welcome you.”

Since 1908, Thompson’s Gift Shop has weathered the ups and downs of business for more than 100 years and this year is definitely up winning three Readers’ Choice Awards. Thompson’s is owned by Melissa and Jason Wright, who purchased it in 2011. “It’s very humbling just knowing people think of us when they think of those categories. It’s a special honor. We appreciate all the customers, we couldn’t do it without them,” said Melissa Wright, who turned her 2000 employment into an entrepreneurial endeavor. The award winning children’s department is a mixture of Peaches ‘n Cream for babies and girls, Mud Pie accessories for babies including blankets, bows, socks, pacifier clips, toys and stuffed animals and Under Armour athletic clothes for boys. Sizes begin with newborn and continue through 6X. As a Gold Award winner in the gifts and accessories category, Thompson’s is known for its extensive lines of classic and fashion selections updated regularly with the latest for the season. Thompson’s features a gift registry for babies and brides. Items are wrapped and delivered to baby and bridal showers in Canyon. “For brides we set up a table with their selection and their pictures so people can see it,” Melissa Wright said. Brides can choose from among Lenox, Noritake, Reed and Barton, Oneida, Fiestaware and Mikasa for her new home. Also to fit out a first home are silver serving pieces from Beatriz Ball, and a plethora of gadgets, clocks, mirrors, picture frames candles from Aromatique, Woodwick, Capri Blue and Aquiesse. Kitchen and home accessories by Kate Spade are on hand. To round out the award mentions, Thompson’s takes top honors for jewelry. In the store, shoppers will find necklaces, bracelets and earrings from Brighton, Fossil and the Austin-based Kendra Scott. Lokai bracelets, which are handbeaded in Nepal, also draw shoppers. “We just try to continually have new things added to the store,” she said.
