A stark reminder of this occurred when the supply hose to the toilet in our master bath broke away from the connection and poured water throughout that side of our home until we discovered it about an hour later.

By that time, there was water standing not only in the bathroom, but both of our closets, the bedroom, and it had flowed under the walls into my office and the hallway. Simply put…it was a mess.

From the time we were building our home 30 years ago, to anytime I encountered a problem or needed a handyman, I knew it was “dime and a quarter” time. If you knew my dad, you know that was a reference to his phone number. Ending in 1025, he would tell people a dime and a quarter was all they needed to reach him, as a way to help them remember his number. There have been many times in the last four years since his passing I’ve wished for that number to work. During times like those I pause, think for a moment, and decide what it is he would tell me to do. Sometimes I know, and sometimes I do not. And there are times, even now, that he tells me. After the floors were pulled up and the workmen had left, I walked into my office and gasped--as there on the floor, in my Daddy’s handwriting, were notes he had written to workmen when we were building our home in 1992.

Over the last four years, I’ve realized Daddy is always with me. Not only in the pennies I find, but the lessons taught, the memories made, and the laughs we sometimes still have at his expense! That love, shared and given so freely, mirrors that of my heavenly Father and for that, I am eternally grateful.

According to Kody Bryan, these are the two questions he and other herpetologists are most frequently asked. Let’s meet Kody as he answers these and other questions about the increasingly popular business of raising snakes.

Kody, when did you develop an interest in snakes?

I grew up in Huntsville and have always had an interest in reptiles since catching snakes and lizards in the neighborhood. I kept reptiles while growing up and even volunteered at a local pet store before I was old enough to get paid for working. After college, my interest was renewed in keeping snakes, but I had begun dating Alex, and when the topic came up, her response was, “If you get a snake, you’ll have to get another girlfriend.” The problem became how to get a snake and keep her, too. I managed to convince her to go to a reptile show in 2016, the Herps Show Conroe, where thousands of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates were on display. The different morphs, genetics, patterns, and colors of the ball pythons were beyond belief. Alex found it all fascinating, but declined to hold any of the snakes until one vendor insisted. It was a baby reticulated python and incredibly beautiful.

Much to my surprise, Alex was smitten! Now I could have Alex and my snake, too!

Having one snake and having a multitude of snakes are two vastly different things! I understand that you now have more than 350 ball pythons you intend to breed. Please share information about breeding and your goals. And answer one of the frequently asked questions, “Do you let the snakes roam freely throughout your house?”

First of all, no, they don’t roam freely about the house. In fact, these snakes prefer to be in a cozy, safe place and enjoy their privacy.

These are animals, and so a great deal of care and consideration must go into providing them with safety, proper nutrition, and a quality environment in which they will thrive. They are housed in a rack and tub system for their

comfort, their privacy, and so their environment can be easily maintained to their liking. This also allows for an organized management system so each snake can be observed, fed and cared for, and detailed notes kept for each. This also enables me to regulate the temperature of the environment and have control over the breeding selections and processes. One of the most exciting aspects of breeding is the developing of new morph (color and pattern) combinations. There are currently hundreds of ball python

morphs with thousands of combinations that have been and are currently being developed.

While at the 2016 show, I purchased three snakes; before the end of the year, I had thirty.

By the end of 2017, my stock was at 60-70, and now more than 350. When I started collecting and breeding snakes, I began to find other breeders were not quick to share information about their personal breeding projects. A single snake could bring in as little as $50 or as much as $150,000, depending on that particular snake’s genetics. Due to the extreme amounts of money and expenses involved in breeding, it’s little wonder experienced breeders were reluctant to give up their secrets.

Fast forward to a few short years later, and now there are plenty of people who are more than willing to share anything and everything with potential up-and-coming breeders and hobbyists. Fortunately, I met the right people early on who have been willing to mentor me.

The available information about husbandry, genetics, and other topics is so tremendous it is easy to become overwhelmed. However, over the days, weeks, months, and years of breeding, asking questions, and talking to as many people as I could, my knowledge on the

subject and methods of breeding grew, and I began to develop my own exclusive program.

If you are passionate about something you want to accomplish, you’ll figure it out. Just push through, and stress becomes success.

Take us through a bit of the process on choosing those to mate and how the pregnancy and eggs are handled.

All things being equal, a typical breeding season begins in the winter months and can continue through early spring. Theoretically, you could lower your room temperature to begin this process in order to have a more defined breeding season, but that could result in the possibility of having all your females laying eggs at the same time, which would result in a ton of babies and a tremendous amount of work! Therefore, most breeders choose to maintain a constant temperature in their room, which provides greater control over the future workload by spreading out potential clutches throughout the season. You start things off by placing a male and female together, but whether they mate is up to them.

Afterwards, the male is returned to his habitat.

The female, if gravid (pregnant), will swell as if she ate a big meal or sometimes look as though she swallowed a small football. The process from ovulation to laying is around 30 days. A ball python will usually lay an average clutch of 6-7 eggs, with the possibility of some eggs being infertile. The eggs are leathery, and veining can be seen in the viable ones. Once eggs are laid, I move them to an incubator where they remain until hatched, around 5565 days. After laying eggs, a female will not eat until her eggs have hatched. By moving them to an incubator, I can get her back into an eating pattern quickly to ensure her health and well-being.

Is raising snakes a popular hobby, and is there a market for it?

The reptile market is growing exponentially and is fantastically popular around the world.

It is a multi-million-dollar global business.

The US market for ball pythons is vastly larger than in any other country, with hundreds of millions of dollars spent annually. Most ball pythons will range in price between $50 to $150,000. Any reptile you can legally obtain is potentially sold at reptile shows. A

Some people are in it for the genetic aspects of developing new morphs, and some just think it is a cool hobby. It is not a “get rich quick” business. If you are in it for the money, it takes way too much time, painstaking work, and expense to raise healthy and quality animals. I entered the hobby because I enjoyed the genetic capabilities of the ball python; not just to make money, but to create new and exciting morphs. Alex has supported me in this hobby, or I wouldn’t be doing it.

She and I both encourage people to attend a reptile show. Get ready to be in awe!

Do ball pythons make good pets? What is your recommendation to anyone who would ask?

Yes, they make great pets, but not like a dog or cat. You have a dog or cat for companionship.

You have a ball python because they are fascinating to watch and beautiful to look at.

A pet snake is more of a visual thing, a display piece, not a cute and cuddly pet. Ball pythons prefer to be left alone, and if you provide a good environment, it’s a good animal to have.

The factors that are important in raising a ball python are humidity, temperature, security, food, water, and appropriate hide spots. The snake needs to feel comfortable and secure.

I must ask the common question, “Are they poisonous?”

That is a very typical question that people ask. What the person usually means by asking that question is, “If it bites me will I die?”

I’ll answer by giving the common answer a breeder gives: Poisonous means: If you eat it, it could kill you.

Venomous means: If it bites you, it could kill you.

The good news is that ball pythons are neither poisonous nor venomous. Enjoy your beautiful and exotic pet!

The Garden Post

Texas Heat has Arrived The heat has arrived, two months earlier than expected. Texas heat calls for Texas tough plants that can take heat, the blistering sun, the elevated soil temperatures, dry soil, and not only thrive, but bloom continuously. Many of these plants are also on the deer-proof list (plants that deer generally leave alone until the heat and drought of summer comes…then any living plant is fair game.)

of neglect: keep in an area with eight hours plus of direct light, water lightly as the plant begins to wilt and keep the plant rootbound.

Bougainvillea will not survive planted in the ground, so keep in a pot. A bougainvillea will not bloom until it is rootbound. There are also shade loving, heat tolerant tropicals: bromeliads, Hawaiian tais, and all of the draceana family.

Following is a list of tried-and true-favorites: Sun Lovers Annuals - Blooming succulents, such as purslane, portulaca (moss rose), and ice plant (delosperma) thrive in the hottest and driest conditions. These sturdy plants rarely overwinter, but may return with a milder winter.

Perennials – This large selection of plants ranges from woody stemmed large shrubs that reach heights of 20’ to grassy garden perennials that stay under 24”. The choices are many, since this is what grows best in full sun during July through September in the South.

Blue daze, Angelonia, salvia, creeping jenny (filler, thriller, and spiller: a term used in the industry for a cottage arrangement. One plant is taller, one is of medium height but fills the pot, and the other spills down the side).

Tropicals – this grouping of plants is stunning (deer love them, too). Hibiscus, dipladenia, mandevilla, bougainvillea, croton, palms are just a few tropical plants that will thrive in blistering heat, but will need consistent watering to be their best. The exception is the bougainvillea. Bougainvillea thrive on a bit

muhly (aka pink muhly). Other favorites for intense heat and poor growing conditions are miscanthus, adagio, Aztec, zebra, Mexican feather, and rooster grass. Ornamental grass looks its best in late summer through fall, when they bloom the heaviest. The grasses will become dormant after the first freeze, and green shoots will begin appearing in late April/May. Do not be too quick to write off ornamental grass as a “goner” in the spring.

Woody stemmed large perennials/deciduous shrubs – consider vitex, althea, crape myrtles (crapes are available in every size and colors range from white to purple). Red yucca is a goto favorite where water is not always available, as is color guard yucca. The graceful red bloom stalks, when placed in groupings, make a “statement” with little care. Expect heights of 4’ + in this category.

Perennial Grasses –Yes, all grasses are perennial (a few will be considered annuals with a hard freeze). My favorite grasses of choice are purple fountain grass and gulf

These guys are always “late to the party,” but if no growth has appeared by late May, that is a safe time to declare a fatality and replace.

Small perennials (under 3’) – Deer proof favorites are Lantana, which comes in every height, size, and color now. Plumbago is another “must have” for a summer garden.

The powder blue blooms are profuse on this tough shrub from spring until late fall, and deer stay away. Agapanthus, all varieties of salvia, and sage are also on the deer proof list and thrive in poor soil, high heat and are virtually maintenance free.

Shade Lovers If you need a plant that can take a bit of drying out, regular green leaf garden begonias are much tougher than folks realize. Impatiens are also a great option, but water needs are

high, and they do best with morning sun and shady after noon. On that same note, caladiums are also very resilient and can withstand a fairly dry environment. Not all caladiums require shade, many varieties will tolerate heavy sun (and not just in the strap leaf varieties). The list of Texas tough plants is immense; your favorite may have been missed. The market is flooded with new varieties; the new distyllium are amazingly tough.

One more topic. Yes, you can plant through the summer months, but new plants will require extra watering your sprinkler system cannot accommodate without giving established plants too much. A bit of hand watering on new additions from June – August may be in order.

What’s Different?

Can you find the differences in the image on the right from the image on the left?

“Do I really need x-rays?”

When coming in for a dental appointment, one of the initial steps that are done is to take x-rays. On occasion, there will be some pushback about whether x-rays are actually needed. Once you get to the root of that question, it usually comes down to a few things: worried about what it will show and radiation amounts. Let’s break those down a bit.

When we look in someone’s mouth, we are only getting a part of the bigger picture of determining your dental health. We are not able to see what’s going on in between the teeth or inside the tooth. We use x-rays to help us get the full picture so we can help to figure out the problem. When a person doesn’t want x-rays, we usually tell them the analogy that it’s like taking your car to the mechanic and not letting them open up the hood. X-rays are NEEDED to figure out what’s going on. Also, if we never take x-rays, we may miss something that could have been fixed when it was very small, rather than waiting for it to hurt and be much more expensive.

Now, let’s talk about radiation amounts. Typically when people are worried about radiation amounts, they are usually thinking about medical grade CT’s rather than dental x-rays.

The difference in radiation amounts is quite drastic. Let’s have a baseline for the amount of radiation you get when you are outside for the day and let’s call that X. When you get a medical grade CT of your abdomen, that’s 3 years worth of X. When you get a single dental x-ray of a tooth, it’s about 3 days worth of X. Big difference isn’t it? What’s even more surprising is when you fly in a normal commercial airline, you get 10 days worth of X! The point is you get very minimal exposure to radiation when getting dental x-rays done.

Having x-rays done is 100% up to you and you need to make that decision for yourself, but it sure lets us do a more thorough job of keeping your mouth healthy!

The Center for Law, Engagement, And Politics at Sam Houston State University promotes unique, high-quality learning opportunities for students. Such opportunities include hands-on learning, mentoring, and internships, with the idea that the students involved in the program will give back to their communities through volunteerism and leadership. These “LEAP Ambassadors” recently had an opportunity to gain foundational knowledge and learn from public leaders on a trip to Washington, DC. When LEAP Ambassadors travel, they make the most of it. Such was certainly the case when SHSU students Yvette Mendoza, Morgan Robertson, Jessica Cuevas, and Erin Juarez traveled to Washington, D.C., to attend the National League of Cities Congressional City Conference over spring break. In addition to learning from leading public officials about key topics in urban government, the Ambassadors also visited the capital’s major museums, and even ventured into Virginia, where they visited the history and architecture behind our nation’s founding.

“Our hope is to provide the foundation students need to become leaders,” observed Mike Yawn, Director of the Center for Law, Engagement, And Politics, “so we wanted them to learn as much as possible from as many people as possible.”

The conference itself was a unique educational opportunity. Over the course of two days, the students took a deep dive into policy, attending panels on the “digital divide,” “cybersecurity,” “homelessness,” “municipalities and the law,” and the “American Rescue Plan Act.” These topics not only tie into the students’ majors, but they are also related to the students’ volunteer efforts and internships locally.

Three of the students—Cuevas, Robertson, and Juarez—have interned for the City of Huntsville, and Mendoza works for the Huntsville law firm Smither, Martin, and Henderson. Their experiences allow them to learn the basics of government and law, while also contributing to their communities.

“I have been interning for the City Secretary’s office,” noted LEAP Ambassador Robertson, “so I have been exposed to many of these issues, but the conference really offered indepth learning opportunities. It was great to be able to represent SHSU while also learning as much as I did.”

knowledge from speakers who rank among the leading public figures in the nation.

Indeed, one of their first speakers was Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, who discussed, among other things, supplychain issues. He was followed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Joe Biden.

“It’s rare that students have the opportunity to be a few feet from a Cabinet Secretary, a Speaker of the House, or a President,” noted LEAP Ambassador Cuevas, “but we learned from all three over a two-day period!”

National Gallery of Art, while also walking the entire National Mall. “One aspect of LEAP,” noted Ambassador Mendoza, “is that our learning is multi-disciplinary. Our advisor wants us to see how the disciplines fit together; therefore, we study law, politics, art, history, civil rights, science, and economics. This trip really highlighted LEAP’s emphasis on diverse learning perspectives.”

In their tour of museums, the students were blinded by the Hope Diamond; dwarfed by a T-Rex skeleton; taken on a trip through history at the National Portrait Gallery; dazzled by the stained glass in the National Cathedral, awed by the work of Monet, Rodin, Van Gogh, da Vinci, and Calder; and spent much time exchanging (opposing) views on the merits of abstract and figurative art.

“Prior to the trip,” recalled LEAP Ambassador Jessica Cuevas, “I did a lot of research over art, particularly Impressionists, so seeing Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and Cassatt was probably my favorite part.”

For Juarez, who interned at the Wynne Home this spring, “seeing the work of Jesus Moroles and James Surls was a high point. I have seen their work at the beautiful Wynne Home, on SHSU’s campus, and in Houston, but it’s another thing to know they are part of the exhibits at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Gallery of Art.” The LEAP Ambassadors also had the chance to visit the Capitol, the White House, and the Supreme Court. For students who want to go into law and public administration, the opportunity to visit was both inspirational and aspirational.

“One day…” joked Robertson. “Seriously, though, it was a great opportunity, particularly since we actually had the chance to see a press conference on the grounds of Capitol Hill, as well as the chance to hear from and see the President at the conference.”

Presidential Company In the LEAP Program’s 16 years of existence, the Ambassadors have met or heard directly from 12 heads of state: six United States Presidents and six foreign leaders. This list includes Presidents G. H. W. Bush, Clinton, G. W. Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden. They’ve also met Presidents from Mexico (two), Croatia, Columbia, Poland, and Ghana. The latter two cases were particularly noteworthy. LEAP Ambassador Megan Bryant, for example, was asked to carry (former) President Lech Walesa’s heart medicine when he visited SHSU. And, when the LEAP Ambassadors met His Excellency John Mahama, he was Vice President of Ghana. Eight days later, the President of The Republic of Ghana was murdered, and Mahama assumed the office of the President.

Making Connections When the LEAP Ambassadors travel, they do their best to make connections to their hometowns and their adopted town of Huntsville.

Probably the quickest connection they made on their trip was when they saw a James Surls piece in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. They have seen Surls’ work in the Upper Kirby District in Houston, on SHSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Conroe, at SHSU’s main campus in Huntsville (Gaertner Performing Arts Center), and the Wynne Home. In fact, the students met Surls last year at the Distinguished Alumni Gala, making the connection more vivid and lasting.

The students were also impressed with the architecture. “The classical architecture,” noted Cuevas, “is just so different from what we see in most cities. It was really beautiful.”

The students explored architecture more extensively while venturing into Virginia, where they saw the homes of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. To be sure, the Madison home was impressive, and the students were eager to learn more about the “Father of the Constitution,” but few homes are as appealing, unusual, and innovative as Monticello.

the foyer to the oculus in the dome room, the classically symmetrical house is an architectural marvel.

Each Ambassador had their own favorite room, fact, or artifact, but for Mendoza, the overall look of the home was most notable: “Its classical symmetry is perfect, and we learned from our professor that it inspired the look of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, which was also interesting.”

The Ambassadors’ study of Jefferson’s architecture continued with a brief look at the Capitol of Virginia and, more thoroughly, at the University of Virginia (UVA), both of which Jefferson also designed.

Community Leadership The knowledge and skills acquired by the Ambassadors are not merely for personal development, they are also meant to be put to use. Following their trip to Washington, D.C., where the students learned much about their government and its founding, the students partnered with the Huntsville Public Library to offer a “Citizenship Preparatory Course.” This course is designed for local immigrants who wish to naturalize, but who may need assistance passing the civics exam portion of the process. For five weeks the students worked with local immigrants, helping them learn information required by the test: Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? Who is the father of the Constitution? How many seats are there on the U.S. Supreme Court? Who is the Speaker of the House? The naturalization process can take a while, typically 13-18 months. Over the 15 years the program has been offered, more than 350 immigrants have participated, and more than 125 have earned their citizenship—suggesting that civic education is a gift that keeps on giving.

He was also Ambassador to France, which, with much imagination, gave the LEAP Ambassadors a sense of kinship.

“We learned so much in such a short period of time,” remarked Cuevas. “We were fortunate to have this opportunity, and we hope to carry it back with us to our classes and activities. I think we made the most of our time, and we look forward to returning.”

The LEAP Ambassadors are a “majority-minority” organization, with five of the six members coming from underrepresented populations. All six work part-time, carry a full load of classes, and have an average GPA of 3.75. The members participate in 50-100 learning and volunteer activities per year.

Put your lunch kits on the kitchen counter for the kitchen group to put away, change into your work boots and shoes, and grab that last sip of water or coffee, as the flags go up at 9:15 a.m. every weekday morning for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Inspiration Village (IV) has been starting their day like this (weather permitting, of course) since 2005, when this non-profit organization was formed in Trinity Texas. IV’s mission to this day is to provide residential and day-hab services for individuals and their families who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. They do this on a 90-acre ranch/ rural property in Trinity County. David and Connie Price are the founders of Inspiration Village. Their son William, who has severe autism, is the inspiration for the village. The clients get a chance to continually participate in day/life skills and work development programs. Each client is an individual who will always be encouraged to progress as well as their circumstances allow. The village started with one client and now has a total of twenty-six. Connie Price explains, “I feel like we created a family here. We are all one big family, staff included.”

The clients proceed to fill up the feed buckets and head into the pasture, where they feed the cows, longhorns, and miniature horses.

The livestock are usually right at the gates greeting the clients with lots of mooing as they wait for their breakfast. Make sure you’re wearing your boots; you don’t want to step into anything brown and mushy! After they are done eating their feed, the clients then get a chance to harness up the horses and have some socialization time with them as they brush them. After they are done grooming the horses, the clients and horses both get some exercise as they walk them around the village and/or in the pasture. Ms. Kristy also teaches the clients how to keep the pasture in great

condition. Her favorite thing to do with them after the feeding is done is to go out in the pasture and show them how to create burn piles in a safe and effective manner. “The guys really seem to enjoy it, and so do I. It’s relaxing and is a form of stress relief.”

The clients in the small livestock group meet at the chicken pen. This is Ms. Candice’s group.

They let the chickens (and yes, ducks too) out of the coop, and proceed to collect the eggs from the nesting boxes. They are carefully collected and brought to the kitchen. The clients fill up the chicken feeders with pellets and throw out two buckets of scratch in the pen for the chickens to feast on. Sometimes

The clients in the large livestock group get together and proceed to the barn and feed shed. This is Ms. Kristy’s group. Kristy has been here since the opening of the village and has just returned fulltime after a little break.

the clients add a little spice in the chicken’s lives by adding a little “Cayenne pepper” to the scratch. Hush, now; this is a village secret to help them produce more eggs! The last thing to be done is to make sure the water in the water pools is dumped and refilled with fresh water. Off to the garden now as this group (and maybe one or two from another group) plants seedlings in the garden boxes, works in the greenhouse maintaining new plants, and cultivates and cares for the spring/summer garden, from which we usually get a huge harvest of vegetables such as squash, tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers, and herbs to sell. We also sell the eggs year-round for $3.00 a dozen.

The kitchen group works in (well, you guessed it) the kitchen. Ms. Tammy, who has been the lead staff member here, has been working at the village for 8 yrs. She teaches the clients how to shop for and prepare delicious meals and desserts. Tammy tells us, “I love that they are learning to cook. I like to teach them creativity in the kitchen. My goal for them is to see them work independently and learn consistency.”

The first thing she does in the morning with her group is have them put away all the lunches the clients brought for that day. They do this every day except on Fridays. On Fridays, the kitchen group prepares a big meal for everyone, and we eat as a family all together. Tammy explains, “Besides being a family, I want the clients to know we are always here for them. You get really attached to them on a personal level. Being here this long, you know what their hopes and dreams are.” This group learns how to follow and develop recipes, shop for the ingredients, and also learns how to create a budget. Ms. Tammy has a monthly bake sale with her group in which they sell all kinds of delicious goodies, plus homemade dog treats!

Well, if you’re not exhausted yet, this is just the morning routines. In the afternoons, they have scheduled volunteers for each day of the week to come in with an array of activities. They have a storytime, jewelry making, craft time, art lessons, and music therapy, Now it’s not all about life skills, ranching, and farming, as you may think.

The clients also have an opportunity to learn some business skills in today’s market (no pun intended). This is my group. I have been with the village for 4 years. We will open a gift shop in which (you guessed it) we will sell our crafts and artwork. The clients are currently learning about advertising, marketing, and retail sales. The group also puts together a monthly newsletter that goes out. It covers all the news that’s going on at the village. I love that I get to take my group out in the community and teach them about public relations and how important it is about how you communicate with people. I don’t feel like this is my job; I feel like I’m teaching my own children, and I’m very proud of them.

We invite you all to come out and take a tour! When you’re here, you will see in the pasture our first residential home that one of our clients now lives in. We have another one to be completed soon. You will see a beautiful barn that was built, along with everything else we are so proud of. When you leave, don’t forget to get some farm fresh eggs, a bushel of fresh vegetables, and a souvenir from our gift shop.

What’s Cookin’ Slow Cooker Parmesan-Garlic Quick Bread Ingredients cooking spray ½ cup shredded parmesan cheese, divided ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided (Optional) 1 ½ cups baking mix (such as Bisquick®) ½ cup milk 2 egg whites 1 Tbs minced onion

Horseradish Pork Chops

¾ tsp garlic salt

Ingredients 4 boneless pork chops

Directions

¼ cup melted butter

Step 1: Generously grease the inside of a slow cooker with cooking spray. Set aside 1 tablespoon each of parmesan and cheddar cheeses.

Step 2: Combine baking mix, milk, remaining parmesan and cheddar cheeses, egg whites, minced onion, and garlic salt in a bowl until well mixed. Pour into the prepared slow cooker and sprinkle reserved parmesan and cheddar over top.

Step 3: Cook on high until bread is cooked through, about 1 hour.

Chef’s Notes: You can use garlic powder instead of garlic salt.

¼ cup dry breadcrumbs ¼ cup prepared horseradish

Directions Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 2: Place the pork chops into the prepared baking dish.

Mix together the butter, breadcrumbs, and horseradish.

Spoon the mixture onto the pork chops; press down the mixture to completely coat each chop with about 1/4 of the mixture.

Step 3: Bake in the preheated oven until the chops are tender, about 45 minutes.

Fresh Strawberry Muffins Ingredients ¾ cup white sugar ½ cup butter, softened 1 egg 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt ½ cup milk

using an electric mixer until creamy. Add egg and mix well.

½ tsp vanilla extract 1 ½ cups chopped strawberries

Step 3: Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together in a small bowl. Add flour mixture and milk alternately to butter mixture until combined. Stir in vanilla extract. Gently stir in strawberries.

3 tsp white sugar ½ tsp ground cinnamon

Directions Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin or line with paper liners.

Step 2: Beat 3/4 cup sugar and butter together in a mixing bowl

Step 4: Spoon batter into the prepared muffin cups. Combine 3 teaspoons sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and sprinkle over tops of muffins.

Step 5: Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes.

Directions Step 1: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook elbow macaroni in the boiling water, stirring occasionally until cooked through but firm to the bite, 8 minutes; drain.

Bacon, Cheese, and Caramelized Onion Quiche Ingredients 4 slices bacon 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust ¼ cup butter 1 med onion, finely chopped 1 egg, beaten 2 eggs 1 ¼ cups sour cream ¼ cup cream cheese, softened ¼ tsp salt Step 5: Remove pastry crust from the oven. Brush crust with beaten egg. Return crust to the oven and bake 5 minutes more.

Step 9: Bake quiche in the preheated oven until golden and fluffy, about 30 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.

Desperate to get out of the heat, Postcards writer Linda Perkins and her husband Ben set out last summer to explore cooler temps in the state next door. What they found was a gem worth the long drive, with enough facets to explore for future road trips to come.

Traveling northwest from the Piney Woods of Southeast Texas, in the middle of July, it is hard to imagine we could be headed into cooler weather. The humidity gradually turned to arid desert heat – hotter than where we had been-as green scenery began to turn brown.

Ah, the joy of driving through West Texas, where shrub brush and cacti give way to oil derricks pumping “black gold” out of the ground day and night. Giant windmills reach high into the sky, harnessing the wind of the

high plains. Somewhere around Lubbock we began to see green again, thanks to expansive irrigation systems watering crops that a century earlier would not have been able to be grown out here.

From desert to wildflowers, and into the mountains A paper map won’t tell you when you finally cross over into The Land of Enchantment, but the scenery will. I am not sure if it was humans or Mother Nature who planted miles and miles of yellow wildflowers, but it was a beautiful greeting as we entered the state of New Mexico and continued west. We were still over 150 miles away from our destination of Ruidoso, but that seemed miniscule compared to the more than 750 miles we had

already driven.

A little over an hour from the Texas border, we stopped in Roswell, New Mexico. Known for being the home of the UFO Museum, there were signs and statues of “little green men” everywhere. They looked out--with big black eyes and their long, thin extremities reminiscent of ET’s pointy finger--reminding us all to “phone home.” Impatient to get into the mountains before the sun went down, we skipped the museum, but put it on a list of things to do the next time we are in the area.

Not very far from Roswell, we began to get a glimpse of things to come. Mountains appeared in the distance, their cool blue hue beckoning us to come closer. Before we knew it, we were enveloped in lush green hilltops

and valleys, and the temperature was already starting to drop.

Horse racing, cafes, art galleries and ski slopes As we drove into town, what immediately jumped out at us was just how much there was to do in the area. We quickly discovered when people say “Ruidoso,” they are really talking about the combined villages of Ruidoso Downs, Ruidoso, and Alto. The area also includes the Mescalero Apache Reservation, which covers over 460,000 acres of pristine land and is home to 4,000 Native Americans, Ski Apache, and Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino.

Driving in from the east, we were first greeted by the Ruidoso Downs Race Track & Casino. While it is not a fancy track, it’s a busy one, with multiple races each week during the summertime.

It is known as the home of the All American Futurity, the richest race in Quarter Horse racing. Inside the track facilities, local vendors sell everything from Native American jewelry to metal Texas signs, a clear signal they are catering to tourists from the Lone Star State. Just across the street, not far from the Walmart

parking lot, a farmer and his wife were selling Hatch chiles, which he roasted on-site.

Turning north, it wasn’t long before we arrived in “Midtown” Ruidoso, a quaint and bustling main street comprised primarily of restaurants and cafes, boutiques, art galleries, wineries and brewpubs. With wrought iron lamp posts, fresh flowers, and wine-barrel looking containers concealing the trash cans, it is easy to feel you’ve just found a little mountain paradise.

Our first stop, after checking into our Airbnb, was Sacred Grounds Coffee and Tea House. Billed as a cabin-like coffee shop, it exudes a mountain town atmosphere. The spacious deck overlooks a hillside creek, where it’s not uncommon to see deer and elk roaming by, and a large bar is tended by a certified mixologist whose creations have been featured in national magazines. At the front of a big room set up with tables and chairs for diners, a husband-and-wife country singing duo from Texas, The Hamiltons, entertained the crowd that had gathered to kick back and relax on this cool summer evening. The staff, some of the friendliest people we have ever met, are a mix of locals and transplants ready to share ideas on where to go hiking or to say why they love living here. It all feels like family, a little akin to what was depicted in the 1990’s TV show Northern Exposure.

Upon waking the next morning, we were reminded why it was worth the drive across Texas to get here. Walking out onto the porch, it was a scant 55 degrees. The high for the day was estimated to be around 73.

We donned our sweaters and jackets and headed off to the mountains.

Alas, we are used to kayaking Texas-size lakes, and when we arrived at Alto Lake, Ben described it as “mostly a glorified fishing pond” and not worth unloading our boats for. Later on our trip, we decided to check out Grindstone Lake, which is larger and crowded to capacity on weekends (we went on a weekday). Looking up at the mountains while paddling was nice, but it didn’t hold a candle to the hiking and other activities we enjoyed.

The most beautiful water is at the Inn of the Mountain Gods, but their lake is only open for rentals Thursday through Sunday.

An hour later, Ben and I found ourselves stuck at the top of the mountain with about 30 other people who had ridden the gondola up but couldn’t take it back down due to a thunderstorm rolling in. On the bumpy ride down the ski slope in a pickup truck driven by one of the Ski Apache staff members, I asked the question. Yes, apparently people do occasionally drive off the edge of the mountain in the winter, but the buses from the Inn of the Mountain Gods always make it up and back safely. Good to know, I thought. If I return here to ski, that’s where I’m staying.

If the lakes around Ruidoso are small, the mountains are not.

The drive up to Monjeau Lookout – a stone tower completed by the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1940 to serve as a fire lookout tower within Lincoln National Forest – is an adventure in itself. The 5.5-mile gravel road is narrow and steep, with no railing to keep a car from going over the edge.

With my fear of outdoor heights (and being in the passenger seat, the side next to the drop-off), I wasn’t sure if I would make it all the way to the lookout, but at a rest stop a mile from the top, I decided it didn’t make sense to turn around when we were so close. Upon arriving at the tower, I was glad not to have chickened out. The tower itself was beautiful in its own rustic way, and the view was spectacular. I could see why this was a “must-see” recommendation by the locals.

Another treacherous drive worth taking is to Ski Apache, which sits high in the mountains west of Ruidoso, close to the highest peak in the range, Sierra Blanca. The route there is again steep, narrow and windy, but at least it is paved with guardrails. I did notice, however, that some of those rails were bent and broken, leading me to wonder out loud if anyone went over the edge during ski season, when the roads aren’t as navigable as they are in July.

The magic of Ruidoso and beyond What we loved the most about Ruidoso wasn’t just the cool air or the amazing nature, which included seeing a fawn being born in the wild behind our Airbnb. It was the variety of experiences to be had, both in Ruidoso and beyond. In less than a week, we enjoyed live music, incredible dining, kayaking, hiking, and shopping in and around town.

We went to the spa and got a couple’s massage. We could have gone horseback riding and gambled too, if that were our thing.

Being Texans who love to drive and explore, our time also included a trip 30 minutes north to the Smokey Bear Museum in Capitan, and an hour south to the White Sands National Monument. The tiny mountain town of Cloudcroft was another quick stop that made our list of places to go back to.

No doubt about it, an 11-hour road trip is a long drive, one we broke up with overnight stays in Austin and Abilene. But if you’re dying to get out of the Southeast Texas summer heat, the road to Ruidoso is worth taking.

Wildlife Wonders MASKED BANDITS IN YOUR ATTIC?

By Cheryl Conley You hear noises in your attic or walls. What could it be? What do I do?

Don’t panic. Chances are you’re dealing with critters; there are humane ways to get rid of these freeloaders. Raccoons seem to be the biggest problem this time of the year. Walk around your house to find the entry point (usually an unsecured grate, a hole in siding, or a small gap in a vent). Look for shredded paper or insulation on the ground. This may help you find the spot of entry. Raccoons are very opportunistic; if there’s a way to get in, they’ll find it. Once found, you’ll know what you need to repair once they’re gone.

Why have they taken up residence in your attic? During spring, pregnant raccoons are looking for a protected place to give birth. Normally they nest in a hollow tree trunk, cave; or crevice—but, if they happen to find a way into your attic, the pregnant raccoon will temporarily move in. My suggested solution is to do nothing. When the babies are old enough, mother and babies will leave on their own. Be patient. It will take a few weeks. Now you need to repair the entry point or this will be a problem again in the future.

If you can’t tolerate the thought of wild animals in your attic, here are some very humane solutions.

• Mama raccoon is in your attic because it’s dark and quiet. So, make it light and noisy! Making sure it’s not a fire hazard, place a high wattage light in the attic. You can also try using a spotlight at the entry point if you know where that is. Place a radio in the attic tuned to a talk radio (human voices has more effect). Play it LOUD. This may bother you, but you have to be persistent for this to work.

• Smells. Websites provide several suggestions on smells that will encourage raccoons to move out. One site suggests soaking rags in ammonia or apple cider vinegar, putting them in plastic bags with holes, and placing them in the attic. Other sites suggest cotton balls soaked with peppermint oil. You can even purchase something called raccoon eviction fluid.

One site suggested an ultrasonic sound emitter. It emits a high frequency noise that only they can hear.

Be patient! These tactics can take several days to work.

Now, what NOT to do. Do not set up a live trap. Raccoons can be dangerous, especially if dealing with a mama. It’s inhumane as well. I’ve heard horror stories about mama raccoons chewing off their own limbs to try to escape the trap and get to her babies. Trapping the mom and leaving the babies doesn’t solve your problem. If you trap Mom, you now have orphans that need to be taken to a wildlife center. Remember, too, that Texas Department of State Health Services states it is illegal for a person to transport animals such as fox, skunk, coyote or raccoon within Texas—so relocating the trapped female raccoon or the babies is not recommended.

If you decide to hire a pest control company, be sure to ask what they do with the animals to ensure they are humane.

Do I need Estate Planning?

How many times have we spent weeks or months planning a vacation or some other big event? Guilty here!! We put lots of thought and time into things that are fun, but what about things that are more important long term?

Although it is not quite as fun as planning a vacation, estate planning is extremely important not only for your wishes to come true, but for your loved ones or heirs as well. Estate planning is often thought of as just for the “rich,” but estate planning is for people with all levels of assets! Beneficiaries are one of the easiest things to elect to ensure certain assets pass directly to whom you desire. It is always a good idea to update them, due to a marriage, divorce, children, etc., and check to make sure everything is going to the correct heir you are wishing it to be passed to.

Stopping the fight before it even begins is just another great reason to have an estate plan in place. You can choose who you want to control the finances while you are incapacitated, and as well as after you pass. After you pass you can set out a clear and concise plan of who gets what and when.

Equine Summer Sores Many people do not associate flies with habronemiasis, aka summer sores, granular dermatitis, or jack sores. Summer sores result from a complex association between the horse, the stomach worm, and its intermediate hosts: house, face, and stable flies. Adult stomach worms shed larvae into the environment through the manure of infected horses. These larvae are then ingested by maggots where they develop into adult flies. They reside in the mouthparts of the flies where they are deposited on the wounds or mucocutaneous junctions of horses causing an infection.

The classic presentations of Summer Sores are one or more open, draining, ulcerative nodules with swelling, redness, and itching.

Generally located on the legs, inner corners of the eyes, lips, sheath, penis, and any moist area or where skin has undergone injury or irritation such as an open wound.

Some horses are shedders, but even a wormed horse can get summer sores. This is because the larvae that cause the massive inflammatory reaction are actually already dead. It is the body’s immune response to the dead larvae that causes the intense itchiness and summer sore formation.

The key to therapy is early aggressive treatment!

De-bulking is often necessary to remove the dead larvae from the sores. After de-bulking edges of the wound, some need to be injected with corticosteroids subcutaneously. Usually, the infection is aggressive, and therapy has to be repeated. The area needs to be covered at all times (when possible) with a medicated ointment. An oral de-worming product, preferably an avermectin product, needs to be administered once a week for 4 weeks. Fecal counts do NOT detect Habronema larvae.

Prevention is the most effective way of controlling summer sore outbreaks.

Fly control is an important step. There are products on the market that are an oral feed additive that acts as an insect growth regulator containing cyromazine. This prevents the larvae from developing into adults. Remove manure, excess feed stuffs, twice weekly to prevent fly breeding sites and the hatching of fly larvae. Insecticides, fly traps and baits, residual fly sprays, fly prevention face masks, and repellents are all beneficial.

If you are suspicious that your horse may have summer sores, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible to hopefully stop a small problem from becoming a large problem.

Invariably, within 30 minutes, my youngest comes upstairs crying because his older brother is causing the cousins to gang up against him. I end up in the basement every half hour to settle these disputes. Is there a way to solve the problem once and for all?

A: You’ve discovered, the hard way, “settling” one of these conflicts does not solve the problem. In fact, settling 1,358,495 of these disputes will not solve the problem. In further fact, you serving as a mediator is making matters worse. Unwittingly, by coming to your youngest son’s rescue, you cause the other boys to resent him and want to get back at him. And around and around it goes.

Some experts might tell you to ignore it. That’s unrealistic. Another expert might say, “Let them

work it out.” That may take years. I say you should help them work it out.

The secret to helping them work it out is to transfer the emotional burden of this problem— the monkey of the problem, so to speak—from your back to your sons’ backs. Leave the cousins out of this. They are guests in your home.

Here’s how to do it: The next time the cousins come over, let only one of your sons down into the basement to play with them. Flip a coin to determine who it will be.

Say, “Obviously you both cannot go down into the basement with your cousins at the same time without causing a problem. I’m tired of the provoking, and I’m tired of the crying, so only one of you goes down today. And this is the way it’s going to be for quite some time.

Today, I’m going to flip a coin to determine who goes down, who stays up. Next time the cousins come over, the child who stayed upstairs

today is allowed downstairs, and the child who was allowed downstairs today will be upstairs.

Are you ready? Heads is older, tails is younger.

Here goes!”

Bada bing, bada boom! The problem is solved.

What this does is cause both boys to become highly motivated, and equally so, to solve the problem. And they will. Maintain this policy over the next four times the cousins come over.

Then, when each of your sons has experienced “forced exclusion” twice, and the cousins are scheduled to come over, ask the two of them, right before the cousins show up, “Do I need to keep one of you upstairs today?” I don’t need to tell you what the answer will be. Let them both play with the cousins until a problem develops, then separate the son who would have been excluded that day.

Before your boys can tame the monkey of the problem, the monkey must be on their backs.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of McKenzie’s Barbeque in Huntsville. Owner Kevin McKenzie says the most amazing thing to him about this milestone is the number of first-time customers who still appear on a daily basis. “Where have you been?!” laughs Kevin. There’s certainly more than a fair share of regulars. Guess this is only natural for a restaurant in a town with an interstate and a university. There are big plans in the works for an anniversary celebration in October with a car show and a customer appreciation day.

Kevin and Lisa McKenzie came to Huntsville after they married so Kevin could attend Sam Houston State University. Newly married and broke (like many college students), the McKenzies began looking for a way to earn extra money. Prior to moving, Kevin had worked for Bodacious Bar-B-Q in Longview and discovered he learned to cook. “An uncle built me a barbeque pit out of an old propane tank, and we cooked at home,” recalls Kevin. We’d have a garage sale and end up having more barbeque to sell than junk!” Before long, the couple were cooking at

home, with Lisa delivering lunch orders to local businesses.

When Kevin graduated in 1991, the couple decided to make a home and raise a family here. Kevin’s dad helped remodel a retail center location for restaurant use, and McKenzie’s Barbeque opened in Huntsville in 1992. Eight years later, McKenzie’s doubled the restaurant size by taking in space next door and adding a large dining room. A year later, they expanded again, adding McKenzie’s Burgers and Fries next door. In 2010, they combined the two restaurants into McKenzie’s Barbeque and Burgers and moved to their current location behind Walgreens at 1548 11th Street in Huntsville. In 2016, they opened a second location on Hwy 21 in Madisonville.

Asked what makes their food different, Lisa is quick to say, “Kevin cooks around the clock. We don’t reheat a lot of meat. Everything is fresh—our ribs, briskets—everything. Kevin adds, “We do things the hard way. We do all wood fires. We burn a lot of wood, and we cook every day. Our fires never go out. Our brisket cooks 18-22 hours.”

According to the McKenzies, brisket is king in Texas. “There are too many variables in cooking barbeque,” says Kevin. “There’s no set time—it depends on the fire and the size of the brisket. I’ve had people ask me how long I cook, and I answer, ‘til it’s done.’ That’s just the truth.” Lisa notes, “We still boil and peel potatoes for potato salad and peel, then hand-cut our fries. They are fresh—no chemicals. It’s the real deal.”

Both say their family is closer because of the restaurant. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” states Kevin. “If it hadn’t been ours, I’d have been away from my family. The kids have been raised in this restaurant.”

Being “raised in restaurant” can take hold. The second generation of McKenzies working with the restaurants include son Keith and his wife Meag, son Matthew and his wife Lindsey, and daughter Maci Shuck (whose husband Jonathan works elsewhere fulltime, but still helps out on occasion). Youngest daughter Madison is a junior at Madisonville High School, but certainly part of the crew as well. Kevin and Lisa are also proud to note the third generation is in the wings, also spending plenty of time in the family business. They have two grandsons and a brand-new granddaughter!

While the family is growing, it certainly isn’t big enough to do it all!

Kevin says both locations have staffing needs and welcome applicants.

He remarks that he sees a lot of posts on social media from people who say they really need a job, but they don’t want to work in a restaurant.

He says it may surprise them to know how different it can be working for family restaurant with local people. He encourages anyone who wants to work but has questions or is hesitant about restaurant work to at least come have a conversation with him.

One thing that might surprise readers is that, in addition to catering barbeque and burgers, McKenzie’s can do almost anything. Steaks, fajitas, chicken spaghetti, and holiday meals have been popular, and any requested menu items are open for discussion. Kevin says they also offer customer pickup of catering orders, or delivery and full service by restaurant staff.

“This can give some flexibility in pricing and possibly make catered meals affordable for more folks,” says Kevin. They can also do upscale items for weddings and parties. Kevin says Lisa has become quite talented with fruit

and cheese trays!

Asked about new and popular menu items, Kevin says, “Something new we are offering is Pork Belly. The McKenzie Melt is becoming a favorite. It’s similar to a grilled cheese, with any of the meats you want on it. It’s served on Texas toast, and available with grilled onions added, if you like. Barbeque Frito Pie is also popular. But the #1 seller is still the chopped beef sandwich.”

Concerning the past couple of years, Kevin commented, “We have just been through some of the most trying times we have seen in

our business life, for sure. It was by the grace of God we survived and are able to continue.

We walk by faith every day. Even through these last two years, we have learned so many things. It’s up to us to apply them now.”

According to Kevin, “When we opened this restaurant, my goal was to offer something different and be able to support my family.

And the community has supported my family well. This community has been really, really good to us.” Lisa sums it up by saying, “This community has blessed our lives.” “More than anything else, we’ve been blessed by God.

Weight Self-Control (by Limiting Your Pie-Hole’s Food Patrol) Any worthwhile endeavor starts with several possible actions to achieve the desired goal.

Success is achieved by choosing the spot-on approach and having the resolve to see it to completion. Both the ideation and actions require an understanding of the logic behind the ideal way. The Bible states this truth in Proverbs 5 as, “Get wisdom, get understanding”.

Two entities establish our material world: pure energy and material energy. Each can (under the right circumstances) be converted to the other; this conversion is what makes the universe operate and keeps us alive. The living tissue of our bodies is converted to energy that allows us to move about, and we fuel up by consuming material energy.

Our body weights clearly are determined by how much fuel we take in. If we take in more energy than we utilize, we gain weight, which is stored as fat tissue. Likewise, fat is released into the bloodstream and used as reserve energy when needed. Fat cells size depends on how much energy (fat) we have stored in them (little storage tanks, if you will).

There are three principal types of bodily fuel: fats, sugars, and protein. Fat is high octane; sugar

is medium octane; and protein is low octane.

Sugar is absorbed immediately and pushed inside cells. As blood sugar rises, it turns off fat metabolism and is stored as lipid in fat cells.

Thus, it has a dual physiologic mechanism for increasing body fat. OH NO. Fats are high octane, containing 9 calories per gram and (just like sugars) converted to energy easily. For perspective, a nickel weighs 5 grams.

Protein starts with less than half the calories as fat and is intended to be building blocks for our bodies; if not needed, it must be converted to energy--and loses ten times as much energy in the conversion to energy step as fat’s consumption (about 30%) and thus it provides only 2.8 calories per gram. Thus, high protein foods reduce calorie intake considerably.

PROTEIN IS GOOD FOR WEIGHT CONTROL. Plus, a high protein meal speeds up metabolism for hours afterwards (termed the “specific dynamic action”). High protein meals will promote weight loss, especially at breakfast, when the increased metabolic rate from the protein will boost the daily activities increase and help shrink your fat. All meats have protein, but choose LEAN cuts.

Our bodies have two selves--the conscious and the subconscious. The subconscious tells the awake self when satisfied with the amount eaten. We might think we are FULL when the stomach is distended, but moreover fullness can be with the duration and effort spent consuming the meal.

Start to establish fullness control by using smaller plates and plating reduced amounts. This will aid in the steps to adjust your subconscious self’s appetite. Reduce the size of your bites, and you will get a tastier meal and be satisfied sooner. I have adjusted to get at least ten bites when eating a cookie. YUM! Continue to chew longer, making each bite last and providing more satisfaction than hurried eating would offer.

Along the Road Big Spring, Texas Big Spring is the largest city between Midland to the west, Abilene to the east, Lubbock to the north, and San Angelo to the south. Big Spring was established as the county seat of Howard County in 1882.

The city took its name from the single, large spring that issued into a small gorge between the base of Scenic Mountain and a neighboring hill in the southwestern part of the city limits.

Long used by regional inhabitants, both permanent and nomadic, the spring sat astride the several branches of the later-developed Comanche War Trail. As whites began to settle the western territories, the spring continued to serve as a major watering place on the southern route of the Gold Rush Trail and continued in use well beyond that time, as the cross-continental trail turned into a major road for later pioneers coming into the area.

The spring’s discharge volume was in excess of 100,000 gallons per day at the time of the railroad’s arrival in the area in the late 1880s. The water was heavily mined by wells built by both the railroad and the early town of Big Spring, greatly in excess of its modest recharge rate, until the water table first dropped below the level of the spring outlet, and, finally, was completely depleted by the mid-1920s. The city now artificially fills the spring from its current source of water as a means of allowing residents and visitors to maintain some idea of how it appeared in times past.

Mustard Seed Moments

The Father of All Fathers After a several year sabbatical, I took a renewed look recently at my family history and filling in the blanks on the family tree. I was quickly amazed at how technology has advanced our ability to find out more about our ancestors. With just a few clicks, I was able to learn of a 9x great-grandfather who was a provincial governor in Maryland in the mid-1600s!

There is certainly value in recognizing family connections and taking time to learn, reflect, and appreciate those relationships. One doesn’t have to look far or have state-of-the-art technology to embrace the ultimate family relationship…it is here now…just as it was in the 1600s and from the very beginning. God, the Father, created a father/child relationship with us and sealed it with blood, making us heirs to the throne and children of the King of Kings!

Like our earthly ancestors, there are many things we don’t understand— blanks we can’t fill in yet to understand it all…but we know what we know and we know WHO we know. And that’s a family history that’s a blessing beyond measure.

I remind you, my dear children: Your sins are forgiven in Jesus’ name.

You veterans were in on the ground floor and know the One who started all this; you newcomers have won a big victory over the Evil One. And a second reminder, dear children: You know the Father from personal experience.

I John 2:12-13
