Winter Texan Appreciation Event BY NORMA MARTINEZ Special to Coastal Scene

inter Texans in the area are invited to the Aransas County Airport for the Third Annual Winter Texan Appreciation Event. It proposes to be the biggest one yet. Approximately 1,000 attendees are expected Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Although touted as a Winter Texan event, all visitors to the area, as well as local residents who would like to show their support for the winter visitors, are welcome to attend. The event will feature refreshments, food, a meet and greet, special presentations, door prizes, live music, karaoke, a cornhole tournament, bingo, a bunco tournament, square dancing and more. This year, through the coordinated efforts of the Rockport-Fulton RV Park Council with the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, the event was moved to the Aransas County Airport.

Chamber President/CEO Diane Probst said when the RV Council began talking about expanded activities, she knew the Chamber grounds would not big enough to accommodate them, nor would there be enough space for the visitors themselves. They then coordinated with county officials to use the airport facility. Evelyn Guidry, Chamber Director of Membership Services, said the last week in January was chosen because of the cooler weather at that time of the year, although still warmer for most Winter Texans. To show appreciation for the winter visitors who contribute to the local economy, the RockportFulton Chamber held its first appreciation day on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018, months after Hurricane Harvey. Approximately 300 attendees were on the Chamber of Commerce grounds for food, fellowship and fun. Many Winter Texans were among the first volunteers who helped clean up and rebuild in the days after the storm hit in August

The second annual appreciation day was held Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, also at the RockportFulton Chamber of Commerce and more than 600 were in attendance. This year’s event is expected to attract almost double that number, therefore a larger space is needed. The Rockport and Fulton communities recognize during January, February and March, this area depends on Winter Texans to boost its economy. On average, Winter Texans bring a population of 3,000 to 5,000 people to the area during those months. Those are people who shop

in local stores, eat at local restaurants and stay in local RV parks and/or hotels, motels and other locales. Winter Texans also are an asset to the volunteer community as they help with many volunteer organizations and events throughout their time here. Winter Texan Appreciation Day is a way for the communities to give back to those who give much to the area and its economy. WHOOPING CRANE With plenty of marsh land and warmer temperatures, the Coastal Bend is an ideal location for birds like the Whooping Crane, Sand Hill Crane, Brown Pelican and Blue Heron to call home year-round for a season. For the tallest bird in North America, the Coastal Bend area is its winter destination. “Texas is truly the ancestral home of the

modern Whooping Crane. When the bird’s population dropped to below 20 in the 1940s, every single Whooping Crane on earth was right here in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. These birds found their salvation in Texas and we believe that they’ll continue to be saved from extinction by Texans who care about them,” said Anna Turkett, Whooping Crane Outreach Coordinator for the International Crane Foundation in Rockport. An estimated 504 Whooping Cranes of a total of 849 in the world are expected to winter in Texas this year. Whooping cranes stand nearly five-feet tall

with a wingspan between seven and eight feet. This bird nests in Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada then migrates to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge for winter. “Texas offers them a magnificent winter home to raise their chicks, those chicks are all hatched at the Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada. Whooping Cranes do not nest in Texas. Their migratory nature means they need wetland habitat and protection in Texas, Canada and all along their migration route from Saskatchewan through the central flyway down to Kansas, Oklahoma and arriving in south Texas,” Turkett said. The endangered Whooping Crane is the rarest of the cranes and among the oldest living bird species. The migratory flock from Canada is the only wild flock that returns annually to its winter home. To celebrate these special winter Texans, a Whooping Crane Festival is held each year at Port Aransas & Mustang Island. The festival features guided tours, bird watching, cruises and other special events. The 24th Annual Whooping Crane Festival will be Feb. 20-23, 2020. For

coast and protected from hunting in the Corpus Christi area. The Sand Hill Crane flies in flocks of two to hundreds. Their legs are extended beyond the tail while inflight and they have a slow wingbeat. Their long neck is extended straight forward. They have a wingspan of five feet. Though gray with dark wingtips, the Sand Hill Crane may appear white when seen in flight.

BROWN PELICAN Another popular bird in the area is the Brown Pelican. This spectacular bird is a favorite to watch fly across the water in search of a meal. The Brown Pelican soars over coastal waters then plunges headfirst grabbing a fish. With a fresh meal in his large bill, the Pelican tilts its head down to drain extra water out, then tosses its head back to swallow. They can fly just above the water surface or can dive from as high as 60 feet. This species was endangered in the 1970s. Thanks to conservation efforts, today there is an abundance of the Brown Pelican in the United States. According to audubon.org, the oldest recorded Brown Pelican lived to be 43 years old.

The Brown Pelican can be seen year-round and often are in large groups. WHITE PELICAN The American White Pelicans may be spotted along the Coastal Bend but are not as common as the Brown Pelican. The White Pelican has white and black wings, large head and huge, heavy bill. They often work together to corral fish to shallow areas and are even known to steal food from each other and fishermen. The oldest known White Pelican was at least 23 years, six months old and was banded in North Dakota in 1983. BLUE HERON The largest of the North American heronsâ€™ species is the Blue Heron. In Texas, the largest colonies are found in the forested east inland region and on the coastal islands. The birds breed in late January to late August. With a length of 38.2 to 53.9 inches and a wingspan of up to 79.1 inches, this highly adaptable bird can feed at or away from water. They wade slowly, looking much like a statue as they stalk fish and other prey in the shallow water

or open fields. Once their catch is spotted, they thrust their neck and head with lightening speed, stabbing the prey with their strong, daggerlike bills. According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Blue Heron breeding plumes were in high demand from 1860-1901. The plumes were used to adorn womenâ€™s hats. GREEN HERON The Green Heron is the most widespread of Texas Herons, though not much data has been collected for the species.

This bird is a common summer resident throughout the eastern two-thirds of Texas. They are more common in inland wetland areas than along the coast. They primarily are seen from early March to July. In the winter months, they are not often seen along the coast. ROSEATE SPOONBILL From March through October, Roseate Spoonbills make their home along the Gulf Coast. In winter, they migrate to Central and South America. Like the Blue Heron, the Roseate Spoonbill was nearly hunted to extinction during the 1800s. Its beautiful plumage with striking pink feathers were a popular accessory to womenâ€™s hats. This bird grows to a height of 32 inches with an average wingspan of 50 inches. They have a pink body and legs, white neck and breastplate, pale green bald head, spoon-shaped bill and bright red shoulder patch. The Roseate Spoonbill eats mainly small fish and crustaceans. Unlike most birds, these birds are silent and often eat alone. They are monogamous and their mating season in Texas is during the months of March, April, May, June and July.

OSPREY A bird of prey, the Osprey appears ready for the hunt. The mostly white head is marked with a black mask extending from the back corner of the eyes through the cheek area and to the sides of the next. The rest of its body is dark brown to nearly black with solid white on the under parts of the body. The Osprey winters primarily along the Texas Gulf Coast and southern Mexico. The bird tends to fly alone, only pairing with another during mating season. Its nest can be as high as 200 feet above the ground. Its primary diet consists of various fish. The Osprey hovers in a figure-eight pattern over the water, then dives into the water capturing its prey with its long talons. It caries its meal a considerable distance before dining. These are just a few of the feathered species seen around the Coastal Bend. The coastal area offers a variety of well-known birding sites from Kingsville and Corpus Christi to Goliad and continuing through Port Aransas, Rockport-Fulton and Bay City. The Texas Coastal Bend Regional Tourism Council website, txcoastalbend.org, offers information on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Details for the Great Texas Birding Classic can be found at tpwd.texas.gov. This is the biggest, longest birdwatching tournament in the United States. According to the website, it is for birders of all ages and levels of experience. There are a variety of tournament categories from the backyard birder to the competitive lister. Registration fees raise money for conservation grants. he Coastal Bend has had the outstanding privilege of being impacted with Naval influence for many years and in various ways. Now one that is extremely beneficial to our youth. The Navy Sea Cadets of the Navy League Cadet Corps. The Sea Cadets offer two programs; the Navy League Program is geared toward youths 10 to 13 years of age and the Senior Sea Cadet Program designed for ages 13 through high school. At each level, the Cadets are mentored by committed adults and peer leaders who are experts in their respective fields. As a part of the Navy League, the program is designed to instill ethics, character building and knowledge of government, with an emphasis on respect for our great country and what our flag represents. The Cadets are taught leadership, responsibility and commitment while instilling a strong sense of

rom late fall to mid winter the fishing in the Coastal Bend will be fantastic! Clear water and cool temperatures should bring big bites and great action in the flats, back bays and deep structure out in open water. Free lining live or cut mullet on grass edges and sand pockets in the flats when the sun starts to warm the waters should bring a good bite. Live shrimp under a popping cork worked around points and guts also will work well. Keep some dead shrimp in the cooler in case you run across a school of drum, free lined or under a silent cork is best. Flounder run will start in November, but remember only two legal sized flounder per person per day by rod and reel only Nov. 1 thru Nov. 30, and two flounder per any legal means Dec. 1 thru Dec. 14. Live mullet free lined or Carolina rigged

works around points and deeper passes should produce a good bite. Flounder also will hit artificial baits, my go to is usually a buck tail in 1/8th or 1/4th ounce size tipped with a piece of shrimp, squid or Berkeley Gulp twirl tail. Corky’s and soft plastics worked on the edges of shell banks or dark mud should produce some good trout action in December and January.

Redfish will cruise into the flats as midday approaches and water temps rise. I generally work the pocket with live or cut mullet or the good old go to weedless gold spoon. Pink will be my color of choice for artificial, Corky’s or soft plastics with 1/8th ounce jig will work best fished very slowly. Live shrimp will be a staple in the live well when you can find them, fished under your favorite popping cork. Coastal flooding is another concern for homeowners who live close to the water. Prospective buyers should first determine if the house they want to buy is in a flood zone or an evacuation zone. This is information that may come up when applying for homeowner’s insurance, as flood insurance is a separate policy. Individuals may have to take special measures to protect their homes from incoming tides or high waters during storms. ockport, Texas made a name for itself in 1957 when the World’s Largest Blue Crab was installed on top of the Del Mar Grill. The crab was constructed with rebar, fiberglass, chicken wire and paper mache by a float building company out of Houston. The local Chamber of Commerce purchased the crab in 1965 after the Grill closed and utilized it to promote the Rockport area. The crab was moved once again to Veterans Memorial Park and was repainted in 1969 by painter Ed Warner. Throughout it’s years in Rockport, the

Crab survived Hurricane Belulah in 1967 and Hurricane Celia in 1970 but eventually deteriorated beyond repair and was buried in Palm Harbour. A local group called Bring Back the Blue Crab raised enough money for a local artist to reconstruct the crab even bigger than before and installed it at the entrance of Rockport Beach to welcome visitors.

To the dismay of the RockportFulton community, Hurricane Harvey delivered a fatal blow to the Crab in 2018, leaving Rockport without its’ beloved tourist attraction. Keep Aransas County Beautiful is a local 501c3 nonprofit organization working to bring the monument back with the help of the community. The organization is selling memorial bricks and partnering with local businesses to gather the funds needed to reconstruct the crab monument along with a memorial walkway. Texas by Design owner, Peggy Thompson, stated that the crab represents joy for the Rockport community in a recent article published by KSAT 12 News. Thompson went on to say that, “The crab represents…that we are back and moving and in business and you know we came through it and our community is still here and everybody is just trying to make it better than it was before.” Keep Aransas County Beautiful’s mission is to empower the citizens, businesses and local governments within Aransas County to keep the community clean, pristine, healthy and beautiful. hether a “local” or “transplant” like me, Coastal Benders look forward to each day with hopeful anticipation. Sure, the holidays are upon us – a time for reflection, making lasting memories with our loved ones and preparing goals for the new year. But, really, we are eager for a much-needed respite from the lingering heat of summer. Although it is now fall according to the calendar, temperatures have hovered around 90 degrees with one cool front to-date lasting only a few days. Humans are not the only animals to have suffered this summer. Only the strongest wildlife have survived. In the garden, there have been too many casualties. Whether native or adaptable, edible or ornamental, young plantings may succumb to the heat and drought unless they are closely monitored for the first year. One project we planted at the end of March is in the process of replanting after an especially hot and dry summer. We have been maintaining it regularly since it was installed but, sometimes, even experienced professionals are no match for Mother Nature. As we transition into cooler and wetter conditions, plants and animals, will gradually rebound. Yaupon Holly have bloomed and developed berries, and some are ripening now. Birds flock to the plump red berries. Humans beware, however. Native Americans used the berries to treat upset stomach, hence its botanical name: Ilex vomitoria. Trendy health food

stores peddle black teas made with leaves from Yaupon Holly. (As with any wild food, do thorough research using reputable sources before attempting to make your own.) This large shrub/small tree is an evergreen and tough enough to thrive despite extreme weather conditions. Yaupon Holly grow well in sun or shade and dry to well-draining soils. This versatile native is available in most nurseries and garden centers. One caveat, however: look for Yaupon Holly grown from local seed stock or cuttings. We have noticed a higher mortality rate when transplanting specimens grown outside the Coastal Bend. Berries of American Beautyberry are almost ripe for the picking. Harvest these Nature Snacks before the birds devour them! Seaside and Sweet goldenrods are still blooming profusely. Collect and dry leaves to steep in warm water for a cleansing tea. Fresh leaves of Sweet Goldenrod (Solidago odora) add a hint of licorice to teas, soups, salads, and seasonings for meats and meat alternatives. Many ornamental grasses are slowly putting on their winter color-coats, while others have finally emerged into the limelight. Gulf Muhly, for example, is admired for its green reeds throughout the growing season and tan-to-bronze hue in winter. Now is its real time to shine. Puffy pink clouds dance atop green reeds, adding a pop of color, texture, and movement to every fall garden. ‘White Cloud’, a cultivar introduced by Superior Trees of Florida, blooms a few weeks after the straight species and appears to be more

resistant to heat and drought. Pair them together in multiples of three, five or more, to create a dramatic backdrop for perennials and groundcovers. Natives like Snakeherb (Dyschoriste linearis), Pigeonberry (Rivina humilis) and Woolly Stemodia (Stemodia lanata or tomentosa) will attract butterflies and hummingbirds, as well as create stunning vignettes. called Stinking Passionvine, has fruit – some ripe, some ripening. Do not let its common name deter you: the fruits are delicious! Papayas are still green and growing, as are bananas and citrus. In our garden are varieties handpicked to thrive in our climate, namely Moro blood orange, Kishu mandarine, Meyer lemon, thornless lime, Hamlin sweet orange and others. We planted other fruit trees -- pears, persimmons, apples, nectarines, peaches, plums, olives, pomegranates, red mulberries, pawpaws and figs – that are maturing but not yet producing food. In our farm areas, several varieties of cucumbers are prolific. Broccoli, cauliflower and winter squash are developing rapidly and should be ready for harvest in a few weeks. Center. The Museum has a Natural History Collection including 405 taxidermy specimens donated by Donald E. Bowman. One hundred and sixty-eight species of birds are represented in this group. Wildlife that is common and has been studied extensively at the Refuge include Rio Grande turkeys, black-bellied whistling ducks, white-tailed deer, cottontail rabbits and javelina. They offer tours on Thursday and Saturday mornings. Not too far from the Refuge off of SH181 you will find The Rob & Bessie Welder Park. As you come in the main entrance stay to the right past the ballparks until reaching the parking area for the nature trail. The trail loops through an area of open grasslands with scattered trees and passes by an observation platform overlooking a densely vegetated pond. If you look in the cattails you may see Common Yellowthroat and Marsh Wren, also in the trees surrounding the pond you will find migrant land birds. This park is a hidden gem that you don’t want to overlook. When you come into Sinton, be sure and visit the Historic Downtown area. Both Coin Park and the Butterfly Garden have unique hollowed out Gourds for the Purple Martins. Did you know that putting up a Purple Martin house is like installing a miniature neighborhood in your backyard? You can look for scouts to start arriving in early January to mid-February. Sinton is located just southeast of the Brush Country Birding loop and northeast of the Corpus Christi Bay Birding loop which makes us a perfect location to see a large variety of birds. Sinton is “close to everything but far from ordinary.”

he community of Lamar invites everyone to come on down to Paradise on the Coast and celebrate coastal style at the 18th Annual LaMardi Gras celebration benefiting the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department. Event Coordinator Zella Hunt said the celebration is on schedule for Feb. 14 -15, 2020 with doors open from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. the first day and 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Saturday. This family event features live music, a Chinese auction, a raffle, a casino, a live auction and a parade, as well as several vendors. Entertainment kicks off on Friday, Feb. 14 with Southpaw from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. The evening will be closed out by Cruise Control, from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m., featuring classic rock, jazz and R&B. That evening, voting will take place for a LaMardi Gras king and queen,

The parade begins at the Stella Maris Catholic Church and goes west on Hagy Drive, before turning right and heading north on Bois D’Arc to the Lamar VFD station. After the parade, attendees should head over to the LVFD grounds for a full day of activities. A children’s area will be available from noon until 5 p.m. and the Ca Va Bien Cajun Band will perform from noon until 3 p.m. JonMikael Mrez Band will take over from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. The silent auction, raffle, casino and Chinese auction are open throughout the day. The live auction begins at 6 p.m. with a live auctioneer and an amazing array of items. Winning bidders should be prepared to pay and pick up items directly after the auction. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. An annual favorite, Riptide, is the Saturday headliner from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. This group performed at the first LaMardi Gras in 2002; and has been at the celebration almost every year since. The group consists of three members and is well known for playing anything from Elvis to

Stevie Ray Vaughn– if the music is old – they play it. The original LaMardi Gras was held in 2002 for the purpose of raising funds for a new fire station as the department had outgrown its 50year old facility. A celebration was not held in 2003 with the merger of the Lamar and Holiday Beach volunteer fire departments, as HB held its Fun in the Sun. LaMardi Gras returned in 2004, bigger and better, and raised approximately $15,000 toward the building. That year, the property on which the LVFD station was located had been sold. LVFD officials had already purchased property on the corner of 12th Street and Bois D’Arc and used proceeds to pour the concrete slab. Seven years later, in 2011, the department stepped up its efforts toward a building project and Fire Chief Carl Stubbs enlisted the aid of Aransas County Emergency Management Coordinator Rick McLester in that effort. In 2013, the groundbreaking was held for the new station and it opened in November 2014 at 302 Bois D’Arc. The 9,300-square-foot hurricane ready structure includes four bays, a training/ meeting room, offices and EMS law enforcement room, a bunkroom and restrooms equipped with showers. The 2014 LaMardi Gras was held on the grounds of the new station; even though the facility was not completed at that time. Fire Chief Stubbs said this year’s proceeds will go toward paying for a new pumper truck, which will hopefully arrive in December 2019. He also said they are buying a new support/utility vehicle, which they hope to have in service in January 2020.

He said LaMardi Gras is the first festival of the year in Aransas County and the local like it because it is not so crowded. It’s a nice, little family event, which does also attract visitors from out of town. The event “holds its own,” each year said Stubb, and they are appreciative as he explained the LVFD “would not able to afford these things (equipment) without the support of these fundraisers.” Proceeds also go toward the LVFD facilities and training. LVFD is manned entirely by volunteers and is one of three departments in the Aransas County firefighting team.
